Church Rattles BJP in Goa Panaji: Public statements from Church officials in Goa, interpreted as exhortation to vote against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has reportedly shocked the leaders of the Hindu hardliner party.

Official communiqu?s released by Goa Archbishop and a social service group of the Church have also driven a wedge between Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza over what Narendra Modi's prime ministership would mean to India's minorities.

Last month, the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), a Churchbacked NGO, lashed out at Modi for promoting personality oriented politics.

It also hinted that communal and corporate forces had "infiltrated" India's secular spirit.

In a public pledge issued to voters, it lashed out at the Parrikar-led government for poor governance, saying it too, like previous governments, was not above corruption and being pro-mining industry.

Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao issued a circular announcing a prayer campaign exhorting Christians to vote for a secular candidate.

Both statements did not take names, they dropped enough hints to suggest who the message was against BJP, which was trying to get closer to Goa's Christians, who account for 27 percent of the state's population.

Goa elects two members to the Lok Sabha.

The statements have riled BJP politicians and their allies, especially those from the Christian community no end.

"Minorities will have an apprehension. It will always be there," the deputy chief minister said last week, openly blaming the Goa Church for triggering a secularism-versus-communalism debate.

Mickky Pacheco, head of the Goa Vikas Party, which supports the BJPled coalition, and his legislator Caitu Silva came worse off in their spiel against the Church.

Caitu accused priests of sucking up to the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha battle.

Pacheco alleged that the Church had sinned by raking up the communalism debate before elections.

"The Church has sinned. I am very sure about it," Pacheco charged this week even as Fr. Maverick Fernandes, a Church spokesperson, publicly asked Pacheco to "revisit his own religion" and stop exposing his "rusty (Contd.. on p. 5)

Church And Politics Should Not Mix In India

I

t was expected, but many have still been surprised by the extent to which the Church has entered the political arena ahead of India’s most bitterly fought general election in decades.

Has the Church gone beyond its duty as an ethics and morality watchdog, its responsibility to the poor and wider society by intervening like never before in the country’s political processes?

After the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India circulated a pastoral letter in February calling on people to come out and vote for parties and candidates committed to religious diversity, the church has been particularly active.

Bishops, the Ecumenical Council of Andhra Pradesh, heads of churches and protestant groups have come out with similar statements of political persuasion, while diocesan bishops have organized fasting and prayers for a healthy and beneficial election.

The Andhra Pradesh Bishops’ group has perhaps gone the furthest in presenting a charter of demands to the political parties and candidates in the coming election fray.

These demands included setting up a Christian finance and development corporation, perhaps the only one of its kind, removal of the ban on propagation and practice of faiths in certain areas, and Christian representation within government organizations.

They were perhaps shooting for the moon when they also demanded

There seems little chance of these demands being met. The Christian community represents less than two percent of the population in Andhra Pradesh. Christian political parties in the state and neighboring Tamil Nadu are weak and never win.

Christians certainly hold more sway in Kerala where they make up nearly 20 percent of the state’s 33 million population.

Catholic bishops early on in the election campaign made clear their unhappiness at a controversial environment zoning report in Kerala’s highlands region that critics say would impact upon farmers, many of them Christian.

In response, politicians have also been quick to respond to this key chunk of the electorate meaning the main parties are courting the Church like never before, and vice versa.

In Telengana, parties are fighting separate political battles to the rest of Andhra Pradesh in a bid to tap the large population of Christian Dalits, or untouchables.

In Goa, where more than six percent are Christian, the chief minister went to the Election Commission to demand there be no polling in the state on Maundy Thursday, as announced in the original schedule – India’s drawn out vote takes place over nine stages ending on May 12.

Despite these isolated cases of greater participation by Christian groups in party politics ahead of this election, Christian representation remains miniscule.

Most parties have failed to nominate Christians, and in many northern and western states, there is not even a single Christian candidate.

This is perhaps the real index of how little minority Christians matter in India's political discourse.

Muslim representation in the elections also falls far short of their numbers. But their issues remain very much in the manifestos and promises of every single political party, even the Bharatiya Janata party that is backed by the right-wing paramilitary volunteer group Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, which remains exceedingly hostile to Muslims.

There remain doubts on whether bishops who speak for their own denominations and rites actually do represent the community as a whole.

More serious are questions as to why they are leaving their pulpits to intervene - or interfere - so directly in the political process. The most telling issue remains the total absence of the laity as part of the interaction between Church leadership and the political hierarchy.

The larger question is how religious minorities, particularly those as small as the Christian community with its puny 2.3 percent of the population, can safeguard interests in a first-pastthe-post election in which vote banks and brute majorities dictate the outcome.

With it is tied up the equally important question of how this minor group can intervene effectively in decision making and governance, irrespective of the results of the elections.

Indian election laws bar the intrusion of religion in politics, and especially in elections.

This does not always work, though candidates have in the past lost their seats after using appeals to religion in (Contd.. from p. 3) knowledge" about Christianity.

Parrikar has dodged and ducked questions about Modi and the possible apprehension that the Gujarat chief minister has triggered in the minority community in Goa. But party spokesperson Pramod Sawant is more candid in his admission.

Sawant said there was a false campaign on, which was aimed at branding the BJP communal ahead of April 12, when Goa will vote.

"False accusations about communalism are being made. But people will see through it," Sawant told IANS, adding the party's six Christian legislators would do the rounds of the electorate to prove that the BJP was in fact a secular entity.

Water into Wine …

“Now, a device to turn water into wine” said the headlines of a small newsreport in the Sunday Times (10.3.2014).

The newsreport from U.S.A., goes on to say that, a new machine that can turn water into wine in just three days by simply adding a few other ingredients has been developed; they call it the “Miracle Machine”. In this “instant” age where everything is wanted “instantly”, such technology should not be surprising. At this moment, my mind goes back to the wedding feast at Cana – if only such a machine existed at the time of Jesus, which could turn water into wine “instantly”, Mary would not have to request Jesus to help the hosts who had run out of wine. And, consequently, Jesus would not have been in a position to perform that (first) miracle he performed at Cana. Well, everything has a time ! We would wonder, now what next ? But yes, Jesus will continue working miracles in our lives, Technology notwithstanding !

Hindu gurus and Muslim mullahs also often intervene, and quite directly.

Many campaign for their favorite candidates, and even for their parties – hugely popular yoga guru Ramdev’s support for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is the most high-profile case in point.

While Christian leaders have taken a more active role in Indian politics than ever before, they are not expected to be so visible during the elections as representatives of the other main religions.

But Christian groups are still confusing the line between addressing social issues and active participation in party politics. Christian leadership, naive in the intricacies of politics, has compromised its integrity.

The Church hierarchy - Catholic and protestant - would have served its purpose better, and served the community in real terms, if it had spent time, energy and money empowering and

educating the laity in public affairs and democratic procedures.

The Christian community needs to participate in all areas of political life, ranging from civil society to local government and popular movements. It remains invisible in these areas.

For a Church as old as the Indian one, it is tragic that its only visibility is in the schools and a few hospitals it runs in various towns and cities.

It is not too late. The Church should, and can, gear up to play a fulsome role in the political life of the country, beginning at the bottom – in the villages and small towns – when there are no elections in sight.

It must make common cause with the aspirations and problems of the people, empowering them. For a church that is supposed to identify with people and not political parties, there is no other way.

Church Authorities Neglect Natural Justice, Kingdom Values

T

he Catholic Church in India is grabbing headlines these days for wrong reasons giving ample opportunities to those opposed to it to question about the values and principles it preaches. The suicide of Salomi, the wife of Professor T J Joseph whose hand was chopped off by Muslim fundamentalists for an alleged error in setting question paper for his students in Church run Newman College, Thodupuzha, Kerala state.

The very fact of the college management’s refusal to reinstate him even after court cleared his name from the alleged charges makes to believe the allegation that the college management too sided with the fundamentalists and removed him from service.

Salomi would not have taken the cruel step, if the college management had acted positively, at least, after the court order, if not before respecting the law of the land. Even now, the higher authorities of the Church have not taken any action against its college authorities whose failure to reinstate the Professor even after court exonerated from his all alleged charges that forced the house wife to commit suicide. After widespread media criticism and public opinion against the college management, it relented, but by then, the damages were done beyond repair. If his reinstatement was possible legally then why hesitated to this extend? Why should not police initiate sumo motto or public demand for registering abetment of suicide case against the erring authorities?

In yet another shocking incident, two Catholic priests and a lay person were arrested for allegedly killing a Catholic priest, Father K J Thomas, who was the Rector of a major seminary in Bangalore, Karnataka state.

What seems to be an interesting turn of events in the arrest of priests in the priest’s murder case, other priests sym-

pathetic with the arrested priests are now accusing their Archbishop of Bangalore in public for implicating them (arrested priests) in the crime. But they have not put up any evidence to support their allegations. The Church needs to take these allegations seriously as it involves serious criminal issue demanding investigation. If the allegations lack evidence then punitive measures needs to be initiated against the offenders.

The above instances are fresh in our memories among a series of such brazen violations of law and allegations of immoral activities by the people who vowed to stand for “Kingdom values” even at the cost of their lives. The laxity of the Church to face independent enquiries has caused serious damages. There are classical cases of such nature where in the Archbishop of Bhopal along with two of his priests are facing criminal charges for attempting to poison a fellow priest. Besides these, there are a few cases of Church authorities also facing charges of corruption and sexual abuses among other host of charges.

The rise in crime involving religious persons seems to be a gradual breakdown of the administration of the Church as a whole. The resentment among the religious persons and the laity when not addressed within time.

The recent incidents tend us to believe that it gradually paves way for such violent reactions of taking lives. The Church mechanism of addressing complaints seems to be totally paralysed

with no one taking responsibility on issues that crop up between priests, priests-bishops, nuns-priests and Church hierarchy and laity and a host of other issues for the effective functioning of the Holy Catholic Church.

Despite such heinous charges against the Church authorities, the Church has not taken action against them instead letting them to carry on with their same duties in the same positions. According to the principle of natural justice and the law, when a person is accused of heinous crimes, he/she is forced to stay away from the very office at least until the completion of the probe. But when it comes to the Catholic Church, it seldom follow even such established public practices leaving one to wonder how will it preach the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ? If the Church continues to function in this fashion, it may not be too far that the laity and committed priests distance themselves from the Church authorities and take recourse in the civil law.

Danger of Legal Ministry by Priests & Nuns In India, there are about 90 nuns and 15 priests who are law graduates and have accepted legal practice as their ministry. They think that law is an effective instrument for helping people and that it is an important avenue by which they can bring the good news to the poor. However, it has been observed that the lawyer priests and nuns do not work as an individual advocate, but through various NGOs, Associations or Women’s Groups that have been formed by them. Two years ago, during a seminar at Guwahati, the lawyer priests and nuns expressed their feeling that support of the Church was not forthcoming for them.

It is true that the legal ministry is a relatively new area and the religious men and women need to tread on the path cautiously, especially when the dispute is between two Christian families.

The lawyer priests and nuns are not like other lawyers. They also function as priests and nuns. Sometimes, they are directors, in-charge of or head of some NGO, Association or Women’s Group. Their institutes, NGOs are also registered with the government under various laws and that they receive donations and funds from various sources.

Hence, the lawyer priests and nuns are required to follow the cardinal principle of natural justice. A lawyer priest or nun should never get swayed by the story of a “victim” who approaches them first, but need to hear the other side of

and no effort is being made to retrieve the black money. Why politicians indicted in national and state level scams are allowed to contest the elections.

Why is there is an increase in the number of land-grabbing cases and misrepresentations? Why do people cheat others by issuing cheques which often bounce and are dishonoured. The list is endless. Yet it cannot be denied that honesty still continues to be the best policy, although it has unfortunately lost its intrinsic value and drowned in the prevailing sea of corruption. the case from the person against whom the “victim” has complained and then impartially decide the further course of action.

There are cases where in a dispute between two Christian families, a religious lawyer has sided with one party without hearing the other side of the story from the other Christian family, creating bitterness in the other Christian family. Recently, a nun advocate was also rebuked by a Family Court for not following the principle of natural justice, i.e., for not hearing the other side of the case from the other party before pleading the case of the first party.

Honesty The Best Policy Whether honesty is still the best policy in the 21st century, is the question which is both timely and relevant in the run- up to the Lok Sabha elections where our politicians are in the midst of their mud-slinging campaigns, hurling invectives at their opponents and wooing the people with false promises. Church not sponsoring me: anti-nuke activist Chennai: The leader of the anti-nuclear protests in Kudankulam has rejected that he has been sponsored by the Church to be a candidate for the general elections in the country.

S P Udayakumar, who has got a ticket from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from the Kanyakumari constituency, said that he has in no way associated himself with the Church in official manner.

Idinthakarai village in Kanyakumari was the epicenter of the protests against the nuclear plant built on the shores of Kudankulam village in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. The site of the plant is just 15-20 minutes away from Idinthakarai village.

Majority of the families in the village are Christians.

“I happen to be fighting against a nuclear plant which is in a Christian village. Of course, the people who were in the struggle were Christians. The Church has not sponsored either me or any other candidate,” Udayakumar said.

The activist said that young and first-time voters are enthusiastic about the AAP and also are people who are fed up with the corrupt political discourse of the day.

“As days go by, I am sure this support will swell,” he added.

Udayakumar said that AAP leader Prashant Bhushan is arguing their case against the nuclear plant in the Supreme Court and “the party has given to us in writing that the local people should give their consent for any mega project. This answers most of our concerns. They have also agreed that there needs to be a larger debate on the nuclear policy of the country.”

Pope: marriage "moves forward" with "three magic words�, prayer and making peace after quarrels Vatican City: With the "three magic words: please, thank you and sorry", with a wife's prayer for her husband and vice-versa and by always making peace before the end of the day after a quarrel, "marriage can progress". This was Pope Francis' recipe for a sound marriage, which concluded his general audience catechesis dedicated to Holy Matrimony, the last of the seven sacraments.

There were 60 thousand people present for the general audience. As usual, the Pope toured among the crowd at length in his white jeep, alighting to greet a group of children waving pink pom poms.

Pope Francis said marriage "takes us into the very heart of God's loving plan, which is a covenant with His people, with all of us, a plan of communion.

Early in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, at the culmination of the Creation it states: " God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them ... For this a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they become one flesh". "The image of God is the married couple, a man and a woman, both of them, not only male, man, not only the woman , no: both. And this is the image of God, and of love, God's covenant with us is there, it is represented in this covenant between man and woman. And this is truly beautiful!

We are created to love as a mirror image of God and His love . And in the conjugal union man and woman fulfill this vocation as a sign of reciprocity and the full and definitive communion of life".

"When a man and a woman celebrate the sacrament of marriage, God, so to speak, is "mirrored" in them, He marks them with His features and the indelible character of His love. Even God, is a communion of the three persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,

who live forever and are forever in perfect unity. And this is the mystery of marriage: God makes one existence of the two spouses - the Bible says "one flesh" - in the image of His love, in a communion which draws its origin and its strength from God. And this is the mystery of marriage, it is the love of God which is mirrored in marriage, in couple who decide to live together.

And for this reason a man leaves his house, the house of his parents and goes to live with his wife and is so strongly united to her, that as the Bible says they become: 'One flesh'. They are not two".

The Pope recalled that St. Paul, in his Letter to the Ephesians, "emphasizes that a great mystery is reflected in Christian spouses: the relationship established by Christ with the Church, a nuptial relationship". The Pope explained that "this means that the marriage answers a specific vocation and should be considered as a consecration. It is consecration. Man and woman are consecrated for their love, for love.

The spouses, in virtue of the sacrament, are invested with a real mission , so that they can make visible, starting from simple, ordinary things, the love with which Christ loves his Church, continuing to give His life for Her, in fidelity and service".

"The real bond is always with the Lord.

When the family prays, the bond is maintained. When husband prays for his wife and the wife for her husband, that bond becomes stronger. Pray with one another. It 's true that in married life there are so many difficulties, so many, right? Work, not enough money , problems with children... so many difficul-

ties . Often the husband or the wife , they become a bit 'nervous and quarrel among themselves. No? They fight!

This always happens: there are always quarrels in families, but sometimes, even plates fly! You may laugh, but it's the truth! We must not be sad about this. It is the human condition. But the secret is that your love is stronger than your quarrel. And for this I have a piece of advice for couples: Never let the sun set on a quarrel, without making peace.

Never!". "You don't need to call the United Nations to your home to make peace, a small gesture, a caress is enough. And tomorrow is another day.

And this is life, so onwards, always onwards with the courage to want to live together. And this is great, it's great!

It is a beautiful thing married life and we must always safeguard it, protect children. Some times I have said here that one thing that helps both in married life are three words. I do not know if you remember the three words. Three words that you should always say, three words which must be in the house: 'please , thanks , sorry'. The three magic words! Please, to avoid being intrusive", "thank you, for what you have done for me" and "sorry ", "because we all make mistakes that word is a little difficult, but must be said Permission , thanks and sorry. Let's repeat it all together! Please, thank you and sorry.

With these three words, with a husband's prayer for his wife and a a wife's prayer for her husband, always making peace before the end of the day, the marriage will survive. The three magic words, prayer, and always making peace".

Finally, in greeting Polish pilgrims, Pope Francis recalled today's anniversary of the death of John Paul II, " in imitation of Christ, he was a tireless preacher of the Word of God, truth and goodness for the world. Even in his suffering. This was the teaching of his life to which God's people have responded with great love and respect".

T

here is a lot of disinformation being circulated about the ad dress by Fr. Cedric Prakash of Gujarat organised by the Sabha Unit of Mt. Carmel's in Bandra.

From the information we have gathered from reliable sources who attended this meeting some of the facts are distorted.

Fr. Cedric whom I know personally for the last 18 years or so is a very bold defender of human rights and he walks his talks. He is a great inspiration for all human right and civil activists. In the frightening atmosphere of the type of fascism that has taken root in Gujarat, he has stood his ground.

So there was an attempt made to derail this meeting which did not happen because the rest were all united.

It goes on to prove that "No one can take away our freedom of expression if we are united".

The country really does not need a cultic or a strong leader. Our country of diversity and pluralism and multitalented citizens requiries an ennobling leader in the mould of Mahatma Gandhi or Nelson Mandela.

On the other hand, we need a strong citizen movement to counter any such dictatorial leadership and ensure democratic functioning of the Government in power, upholding the rule of law, protection of the minorities and all other communities and safe guarding the Constitution.

Hence as Fr. Cedric has expressed, we need leadership that will protect the Constitution and safeguard equally the fundamental rights of its citizens irrespective of their caste, creed or religion.

Therefore, Communalism is more dangerous than Corruption. Let us not

be allured by the vision of development which keeps 80 percent of our people out of the benefits of such development and only a few get richer at the cost of the others.

It is interesting to observe that in the 2009 parliamentary elections in the North Mumbai Constituency the voting percentage was just 42%. The community voting in this constituency was 65 % against the overall 42 % because the community chose to come out and vote in large numbers because of a sustained motivational campaign by community groups.

Naomi Klein had stated:" Democracy is not just the right to vote, it is the right to live in dignity" We need to have the vision of one united and peaceful India. Every Vote will therefore count. Hence "None of the Above" [NOTA] should not be an option as it is a wasted vote. But the call is to do strategic voting, mobilise citizens in our areas for an ambitious 100 % turnout for voting thus ensuring the preservation and protection of our Constitution, the plural ethos and the rich diversity of our great nation.

Workshop On Marriage Laws Easter Facts

KANPUR: (6th April) In response to the felt need of the Catholics of Kanpur the Kanpur Catholic Association (KCA) organized a half day workshop on “Marriage Laws” today at St Patrick’s Church, Cantonment. There were over 100 participants. The main speaker was Rev Dr. Telesphore Kerketta of St Joseph’s Regional Seminary, Allahabad, courtesy Bp Raphy Manjaly of Allahabad, who took keen interest in the programme and had arranged for Dr Kerketta, a Canon Lawyer.

In his introductory remarks, chhotebhai, the KCA President, said that this workshop had been organized at the request of the members. There are several doubts and confusion regarding the Church’s teachings on marriage. Often piquant situations arise out of ignorance, when people make arrangements for a wedding, and are then told that such a marriage cannot be solemnized in a church, because certain conditions are not fulfilled.

Hence, just as prevention is better than cure, it is better to create a general awareness about the Church’s teachings on marriage, rather than to have tension and regrets later.

Besides, the situation in a multireligious country like India is such that there is a high percentage of interdenominational and inter-faith marriages. This should be considered an opportunity rather than a threat. One also needs to understand the interface between canon law and civil law.

Dr Kerketta, in his presentation, dwelt on the very nature of marriage, from the natural, biblical and canonical perspectives. He said that the purpose

of such a workshop was not to divide people, but rather to unite them. In today’s age of liberal thinking the very institution of marriage is under threat, hence such awareness programmes are the need of the hour. The marriage preparation courses organized by the Church are often a case of too little, too late.

Dr Kerketta spoke at length on the importance of informed choice and matrimonial consent. He also spoke about the various impediments that could make a marriage null and void.

He also opined that the church did not have a clear approach on vagrants, those who don’t have a fixed domicile, and therefore prenuptial enquiries or marriage preparation courses become almost impossible.

In the open house session there were a barrage of questions, pertaining to inter-faith marriages and denial of communion to those who have married outside the church, or those who were divorced. There were also questions on annulment, and the functioning of Church marriage tribunals. It was explained that the Church has both a doctrinal and a pastoral approach.

On the one hand it says that you should not jump in the water. On the other, if somebody has fallen into the water, instead of an admonishment, such a person should be helped out of the situation.

The workshop generated keen interest in the participants, especially the youth. The KCA assured its members that it would organize similar workshops on burning topics, as desired by the people. Among those who actively participated in the programme were Cornelius Kujur, Michael Das, Albert Kujur, Noel George, Elizabeth Singh, Adv Mary Christina, Peter Fernandes, and Damien Durning. P.U. Thomas did the scripture reading, Annie Thomas said the prayer and Joe Trinidade gave the vote of thanks; especially for Rev Apolin Lobo, the parish priest, who had gone out of his way to make the arrangements in the parish hall.

Two Indians Move Closer To Canonization Vatican City: Two saintly people from Kerala— Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara and B l e s s e d Euphrasia—have moved a step closer to canonization when Pope Francis today approved miracles attributed to them.

Pope authorized Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, to promulgate decrees accepting the miracles attributed to them, Vatican information service said on Thursday.

Blessed Chavara (1805-1871), who founded the Carmalites Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation, was born near Alappuzha in Kerala.

He is also revered was a social reformer who worked hard for the development and education of people throughout Kerala by encouraging to have school at village parishes.

The CMI congregation is now renowned for its socio-educational services across the country, even in remote villages of northern India.

Sister Euphrasia (1877-1952), was born in near Thrissur in central Kerala.

She joined the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel at Koonammavu in Kerala the first indigenous congregation of Syro-Malabars.

She was was often afflicted with various illnesses which caused her intense suffering. Once, during a particularly painful attack, the Sisters were resolved to send her away to home, but through an apparition of the Holy Family she received a miraculous healing that permitted her to continue in the convent.

Mother Euphrasia had a profound sense of Church and she personally felt the sorrows and problems of the

Church of her day. She offered her mortifications and penances for the conversion of schismatics and asked the novices and children to pray for them.

The Vatican has not announced the miracles it accepted to decree the canonization of these saintly people.

Sister Alphonsa of Bharananganam became India's first woman saint when she was canonized on October 12, 2008.

Shimoga Diocese Gets A New Bishop

The Holy Father Pope Francis appointed Fr Francis Serrao SJ as the New Bishop of the Diocese of Shimoga.

This was announced in the Vatican on March 19 at 04.30 p.m.

The new Bishop is the 3rd Bishop for the Diocese of Shimoga. The Vacated place created by the transfer of Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo to Udupi..

Fr Francis Serrao SJ was born in Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada District on 15 August 1959 in a pious Catholic family. He is the youngest of 11 children of Late Piedade Serrao and Late Gracy Mary Serrao. In addition to Fr Francis, 5 of his brothers have become priests. A sister too is a Religious nun.

Fr Francis joined the Society of Jesus (SJ) and was ordained a priest by Late Bishop Bazil D’Souza of Mangalore on 30 April 1992. His apostolic service comprises Social Action and parish ministry in Mundgod, Uttara Kannada. He was Mission Superior in Anekal and simultaneously Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Parish when he also worked as the Acting Director of the Regional Theological Centre of the Karnataka Jesuit Province. He was then appointed Superior of the Bijapur Jesuit Mission and in 2004 was appointed Rector of St Aloysius College, Mangalore. After serving for 5 years as Rector he was appointed the Provincial Superior of Karnataka Jesuit Province in 2009, in which capacity he continues to serve till date.

Fr Francis has a BA, a bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Masters in Theology. He is fluent in Kannada, English, Tulu, Hindi and Konkani. He is well known for his humane approach, his friendly nature, his love for the poor, his capacity for hard work, his interpersonal skills and administrative capacity.

uman Development Index is a common indicator of a region’s overall wellbeing as it is based on critical indicators such as life expectancy, education, and income indices. It is one of the best indicators to judge the performance of region because a single glance at the HDI index reveals the reality.

A politician’s work should go beyond appearing in the assembly and asking questions. An ideal candidate takes care of all round development of the state. A singular focus on rapid industrialization, providing health benefits or worse, taking bribes just doesn’t cut it. Hence, every voter should look at the HDI figures before and after the term of the incumbent to make a decision about their choice, since states with high HDI look much better than those with a lower index.

Since HDI is an index, its highest possible value tends to be one. The regions with HDI around 0.7-0.9 are hence highly developed in terms of quality of living and the population experiences a decent lifestyle. The regions with HDI between 0.4-0.6 however are still in the phase of development and need considerable efforts to pump up and increase qualitative factors like education and health services which in turn gives rise to incomes and standard of living. HDI below 0.4 shows very basic human development with most of the factors such as income, life expectancy and education, suffering.

These areas require the most efforts and attention to grow out of their shells.

For those who thought Gujarat model is the one India needs, there is a surprise. Gujarat’s HDI index is nowhere near the High Human Development mark as it is a measly 0.527 while the much criticized national capital is way above on the second spot with 0.750 as per the latest figures published by the Indian Human Development Report 2011, which constitutes data from 2007 and 2008. ages in the middle level group at 11th rank while West Bengal is even lower at the 13th rank with a very low HDI. If we analyze the top 5 states on the table, trends will emerge: Kerala sits on the top of the table for India with an HDI of almost 0.8 and this signifies a better quality of life for the citizens and a high life expectancy coupled with good literacy rate. The state assembly is currently ruled by the Indian National Congress led United Democratic Front which has clearly done some good work. Similarly, Delhi is the national capital and seat of the central government too. The high human development here is more a necessity than a proud luxury which the central and state governments have worked hard to achieve in the past.

The next three spots in the table are taken by states of Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab which have medium human development. Their HDI lies in the 0.6-0.7 bracket and signifies a decent standard of living for the people. The important point to note here is that the Congress was also ruling the state of Goa during the period of 2007-2012 after which BJP came to power. On the other hand, Congress enjoys absolute majority in Himachal

Pradesh as well. Punjab on the other hand is ruled by Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP and the state has soared in terms of income and life expectancy in the last decade. The demographic dividend is very high in the state and it just needs to fix its education front and it might zoom past a lot of states very soon.

Below are the maps which make the picture much clearer. First map details the party of the Chief Minister of the state and the second one will tell you the HDI rank of all the states.

Read the two together and you will have a much better understanding of the performance of states and their so called level of development.

Though, attributing the development or non-development of a state to a certain party is naïve at best because the human development index takes into account years and years of activity in the region. Further, coalition politics make it almost impossible for a party to act on its own in the modern times. HDI analysis of the states is not an end to your research for the perfect party but it is nevertheless an important indicator that can’t be overlooked.

Church Confers Human Dignity Award to Martin Macwan

aira Social Service Society (K.S.S.S.) celebrated its 47 An niversary as Human Dignity establishment on 3rd February, 2014 at St. Joseph Church, Lotiya Bhagol, Anand, Gujarat. As a mark of its service in promotion of Justice, Peace, Development and Human Rights in the society. On this day, young girls from the poor families were given the scholarships and Mr. Martin Macwan from Navsajan Trust who has been the catalyst in bringing the difference in the lives of the people especially the Dalits and downtrodden of the society, was honored with “Human Dignity Award”.

On 3rd February, 2014 the entire staff along with the Director Fr. Joseph Appavoo were gatherd to celebrate this special day at St. Joseph Church, Anand.

The cultural programme began with the lighting of the lamp and prayer dance. Fr. Joseph Appavoo – Director of KSSS welcomed everyone for the occasion in his speech. Fr. Joseph Appavoo shared the past history/works of KSSS in brief and shared that KSSS is working for the poor and marginalized people in the community. Fr. Rocky Pinto the vice precident of KSSS welcomed all the Guests and Participants.Mrs. Anuradha Malle distributed the certificates to 615 young ppor girls who were provided vocational skill training on Computer, Tailoring, and Beautician Classes by KSSS with a grant of her department of her department. While appreciating

the young girls and KSSS, Mr. Martin Macwan was right person to be honored. Later on Annual report of KSSS was read out highlighting the achivements of the year. Rt. Rev. Thomas Macwan, Bishop of Ahmedabad felicitated Mr. Martin Macwan with the 6th “Human Dignity Award”. Rt. Rev. Bishop Thomas Macwan, in his speech focused on birth of Girl child, Girl Education and Gender Discrimination.

Therafter 21 poor girls were given Late Bishop Adwin Pinto Scholarship amounting Rs. 60,000/- for their education. On this great occasion Mrs. Anuradha released KSSS book on

“KAUSHALYA”- The Success and Micro Enterprenum of Vocational Promotion.

While appreciating KSSS for its change and charity approach to Right Based approach in the development of the poor, he invited everyone to voice against the social inustice caused on to the marginalized communities and work for their rights and dignity. The Chief Guest, Mrs. Anuradha Malle in her speech pointed out that today after completing the 66 years of Independence, the country has not really delivered. Well voluntary organization like KSSS and Navsarjan Trust, work for the deprived classses of the society through a mutation is found. Mr. Umesh Rathod – DGM of Anand, NABARD, in his speech he appreciated the contribution of KSSS. He also shared his experience with KSSS which provides its dedicated services in eradication of social justice.

The cultural programme like traditional Garba, tribal dance and other occasional dances demonstrating the local current issues and spreading the message of Human Dignity.

2000 persons join The Project Vision

000 members from the St Tho mas Forane Church in Banga lore pledged to donate their eyes under the aegis of The Project Vision last Sunday. 600 of them also signed up as volunteers to promote the cause of eye donation to help the 15 million blind people in the county.

More than one third of the blind people in the world are in India.

Fr Thomas Kallukulam, the Parish priest handed over the signed pledges to Fr George Kannanthanam, the founder and director of The Project Vision. The members of the Vincent De Society coordinated the eye donation program.

Fr George, a Claretian priest who started this ministry for the visually challenged, who spoke to the members of the Church informed that the donation of eyes will benefit the six lakh blind people in Karnataka. More than one percentage of the population are blind and thus there are about one lakh blind persons in Bangalore city alone.

Fr Kannanthanam, who lived with several blind people in Sumanahalli for 12 years, encouraged everyone to donate their eyes. Persons of all ages and people with any diseases also can donate their eyes. In just 20 minutes the process can be done at home itself. Taking the eyes does not disfigure the face.

It is for the first time that a Church in Karnataka is coming forward to organize an eye donation program.

Fr Kallukulam said that this is the best charitable action that Christians can do in this season of lent. He said that it is in line with the life of Jesus and the teaching of the Bible and the Church.

All the religions support organ donation.

A new common number has been created for anyone to donate their eyes from any part of Karnataka – 104. This call will be directed towards the nearest eye bank and they will come to the spot immediately. Fr Kannanthanam informed that this was possible due to the efforts of The Project Vision members.

The objective of Project Vision is to make Bangalore the eye capital of the world. If all the institutions and organizations in Bangalore take up this program, this goal can be achieved.

Though there is need for 140,000 cornea transplant in the county, only 35,000 eyes are donated and collected in the country now. Thus more than one lakh people are added to the waiting list every year. Out of the 430,000 who died in Karnataka last year, only 3500 persons have donated their eyes.

The volunteer can make a big difference to promote eye donations in

their neighborhood, institutions and organizations. Called as ‘Sight Ambassadors’, they can get people to pledge their eyes and also to coordinate the process of eye donation in the event of someone’s death. Thus Project Vision has to become a movement involving everyone in the society. The goal is to make fully pledged organizations and institutions.The vision of Project Vision is 'let everyone see'.

Catholic Social Teaching in Gujarat –

A Call to Social Activism

he Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in collaboration with Kaira Social Service Society (KSSS) organized a two-day training on Catholic Social Teaching at KSSS in Ahmedabad on 26th and 27th of March 2014 for Gujarat Zone DSSS. Fr. Joseph Appavoo, the Director of KSSS welcomed all the dignitaries. Fr. Charles Irudayam, Secretary at CBCI Office for Justice, Peace and Development (JPD) presided over the entire program that aimed at promoting social justice through the active involvement of church and civil society groups. The training program was attended by priests, nuns, social workers and people involved with church or social work in four dioceses of Gujarat – Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar and Baroda.

On first day, the Archbishop of Gandhinagar, his grace Rt. Rev. Stanslaus Fernandes SJ delivered the keynote address where he introduced the Social Teaching of the Church which is no more a hidden secret of the church.

He reminded every Christian of their social responsibility and that faith and social action must be rooted in preferential option for the poor. After the keynote speech Fr. Charles Irudayam in his introductory talk drew attention to the works of JPD where rights based

approach is practiced and regional needs are taken into consideration at every stage.

Fr. Charles’s next session was on Catholic Social Teaching (CST) - a call to social activism. Biblical explanations were put forth to understand the need for church’s participation in this ‘peoplecentered’ or ‘Christian response’ to social issues. The inseparable nature of human rights and peace was well explained. Also, the need to integrate ethics into every realm or dealings in our society was stressed.

In the afternoon, Fr. Arock, Director of YCS & YCM, Ahmedabad Diocese and Fr. Sandeep, Director of Youth, Ahmedabad Diocese gave a very interactive session where they discussed issues that concern with the youths of today. They emphasized on the responsibility of each and everyone of us, whether we are parents, church, teachers or close friends to sow the seeds of moral values in youth through faith, personal and social formation.

After the session on youth, Fr. Charles explained in detail the principles that CST stands for. They are human dignity, common goods, the universal destination of common good, subsidiarity, participation and solidarity. The day’s last session started with video clips on two inspiring personalsSunita Krishnan who continues to rescue and rehabilitate victims of sexual violence in India and Fr. Tissa Balasuriya, social activist in Sri Lanka who stand out as great examples of what was focused on – justice is indivisible from charity. In this session, Fr. Charles went through some of the topics covered in the encyclical- Caritas in Veritat. They were the issues that put our present world in dilemma on how to deal with such as hunger, corruption, globalization, environment protection etc. The first day of training was concluded with a message that humanism is not complete without God, when it comes from God.

The second day of training was blessed with the presence of Bishop of Ahmedabad diocese, his grace Rt. Rev. Thomas Macwan. Bishop Macwan inspired the audience through his address on biblical concepts of human life and dignity. He communicated the message of “be a light shining in the darkness.” Female foeticide, surrogacy, violence and discrimination against women were some of the most prevailing causes of ‘darkness’ in Gujarat most specifically Ahmedabad that Bishop encouraged everyone to firmly rise against. Bishop Macwan encouraged the listeners to promote and protect the life of every human being from birth to death so that everyone will lead a dignified life because God has created everyone in his own image and likeness. He also said that we must become prophets and voice of the voiceless.

Fr. Thomas Nadakkalan, Director of Navjeevan Trust in Rajkot was the facilitator of the next session where he gave presentation on human rights followed by case study analysis and discussion. All throughout, Fr. Thomas did not fail to point out that “No human development is possible if you neglect human rights.” To further expand on human rights with a special emphasis on minority and vulnerable groups, Ms. Shaveta from Center for Social Justice highlighted the rights and government schemes meant for the minority groups in India.

As the last activity of the training, the audience came up with solid action plans to be executed at their respective diocese. The action plans were specific that took into consideration the local concerns and aimed at promoting social justice for all. It was clear that the training met its goal of instigating among trainees a sense of duty towards building a society where the parable of Good Samaritan is lived up to by everyone, everyday.

very evening promptly at 7.00, the bells of the Ange lus ring loud and clear at various churches in Mumbai and its suburbs, reminding people to stop and recite the prayer, and then the chimes move into the melodious ‘Ave of Lourdes’, instinctively making people pause and listen. The Angelus bells ring in the morning too for the early risers, bless them!

Much time, labour and money has gone into the complicated contraption that produces such sweet angelic melody but it is worth the listening. He started making his own amplifiers and accepted engagements to provide music at terrace functions which were the in thing in the 1950s, often wedding receptions too were held on building terraces; halls and tennis courts were not even considered like today when you book the reception venue first and then decide the day of the wedding!

The terrace was the cradle for the growth of the audio system, and Cugan began to learn from bigger and experienced players. For him however, this was a hobby while he was employed with Oswal Petro-Chemi-

cals of the Union Carbide group, and even in the workplace he was sought for all technical problems. Then, in 1990 he resigned on health grounds to pursue his dedication.

Soon, Sound Crafters became synonymous with sound and Cugan’s professionalism was in demand for

some of the responsibilities and also the authority to make decisions. So junior was put through the paces, underwent a period of technical training and was well-groomed to take the helm, with Papa always on hand as consultant and guide. The Taites are ever alert to new technologies and have made heavy investments to be in the lead, and take on more shows, but they are also aware that for all their commitments they need hired help and so they maintain a team of contented trainees who grow with the experience, and later often seek to better themselves of course with the good wishes of their original employers.

In whatever he does, Cugan has the support of his partner of near 50 years, his wife Janet, and their children Charmaine, Candida, Cheryl and man Friday, Nestor. All four have their

sound equipment in various churches spread from Ahmedabad to Nashik to Alibag, and even to Daman, Goa and other centres apart from his presence in local churches in Mumbai and its neighbourhood. For every event when one needed to be heard and seen there had to be Sound Crafters and Lite Krafters.

Flaws in the Synod on the Family

T

he article captioned “Fundamen tal Flaws in the Synod on the Family” (Secular Citizen, March 17, 2014) by Dr Astrid Lobo Gajawala was interesting and thought provoking. The learned writer has correctly lamented the exclusion of the laity from the two day discussion by the Cardinals on the subject of “Church’s pastoral approach to the family”.

However, the writer’s observation on the condition of women in India is typically feminist and biased. In a Christian family the girl child does not have to suffer the discrimination and ill treatment as elaborated by the writer. On the contrary, Christian parents are very loving to their daughters and educate them as far as they want. I have not seen Christian parents lamenting or preventing birth of a girl child. The writer has unnecessarily thrust the ills of other communities on Christian families.

While dwelling on the woes of married women, the writer has questioned, “What are the repercussions on a woman’s psychological and physical health when a husband X-Spam-Subject: YES X-Spam-Subject: YES demands sex irrespective of whether she wants it or not?” Actually, sex is an integral part of a X-Spam-Subject: YES X-Spam-Subject: YES marriage. The Mumbai High Court has also recently ruled that denial of sex is cruelty. However, many married women try to dominate and pressurize their husbands by means of withholding sex. If a woman does not want sex, why does she get married?. Some ultra-modern brides are very arrogant and disrespectful towards their in laws and many aged parents in law are in Homes for the Aged or staying separately only because of the proud, stubborn and uncaring daughters in law. Dr Astrid Gajiwala and other feminists need to have a look at the other side of the story too.

nited Kingdom: A new study con ducted by Liverpool scientists suggests the Shroud of Turin proves Jesus was crucified with his hands over his head in a "Y" shape, rather than to the sides in a "T" shape, as traditionally depicted in Christian art. The scientist leading this recent study says this new crucifixion would be "very painful" and likely cause asphyxiation for the victim.

Scientists at the Liverpool John Moores University in the U.K. announced their findings at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences earlier this year. They argue that the Shroud of Turin, believed by some to be the burial cloth of Jesus, shows an image of a man with blood stains streaking down his arms.

Matteo Borrini, who led the shroud study at the John Moores University, argues that these stains could only have been obtained if the victim's arms were hung over his head in a "Y" shape, instead of the "T" shape that is so prevalent in Christian art.

The scientists reached their new conclusion after having scientist Luigi Garlaschelli of the University of Pavia, Italy, act out different crucifixion poses with donated blood dripping down his arms via a cannula.

been much more painful than the "T" shaped crucifixion, as being hung with one's arms above their head makes it very difficult to breathe. The scientists further suggested that one hung in a "Y" shape would likely die from asphyxiation.

"This would have been a very painful position and one which would have created difficulty breathing," Borrini said.

The validity of the Shroud of Turin has long been disputed, with some arguing that the linen is in fact Jesus' burial cloth, and others arguing that the piece of fabric is a master forgery from the Medieval Times. As Borrini indicates, medieval torture often included hanging a victim with their arms above their head using rope.

However, he did add that if the shroud is a forgery, it is expertly done since the blood stains line up as accurately as if they were produced from an actual crucifixion.

Youth Launch Website To Pray For Indian General Elections

Bangalore: A group of professionals from Goa, Mangalore and Pune has launched an innovative website that randomly assigns willing visitors the name of a Lok Sabha constituency to pray for during the 2014 General Elections in India.

“Our rationale is that if good representatives are elected from each constituency, the parliament will be full of good people and India will get a good government,” explains S Denzil, one of young men involved with the website, LetsPrayForIndia.com. “We need as many people’s prayers as possible,” he added.

He also said the group members are all Christians with strong belief in the power of prayer.

The prayer has an attractive background image incorporating the hues of the nation’s tricolor and allows visitors to enter their names and email addresses.

Upon clicking the “Adopt” button, the visitor is randomly presented with the name of a constituency to pray for, along with a couple of external sites which provide additional information about one’s ‘adopted’ con-

he Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the water close to Japan has not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring the fish. If the return trip took more time, the fish were not fresh. To solve this problem, fish companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer.

However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen fish. And they did not like the taste of frozen fish. The frozen fish brought a lower price. So, fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After a little thrashing around, they were tired, dull, and lost their fresh-fish taste. The fishing industry faced an impending crisis! But today, they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan. How did they manage? To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the tanks but with a small shark. stituency.

All this information is transmitted to the prayer volunteer as a one-time email for reference.

Catholic Priests Turn Ambassadors For Voting Awareness Gorakhpur: Two Catholic priests have been appointed ambassadors to promote vote awareness in a district that had recorded the lowest polling percentage in Uttar Pradesh in the last general elections five years ago.

In every district the Election Commissioner appoints non-political and non-governmental agencies as icons for Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP).

The District Collector of Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh has Fathers Gibi N Jose and Kuriakose (Jaimon) Appasseril as the good will ambassadors. The priests are members of Gorakhpur diocese that covers the northeastern region of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country.

The collector is also the Returning Officer in 16th Lok Sabha (parliamentary) Elections scheduled to be held in UP state in three phases starting April 10 and ending May 12.

The appointment of the priests as SVEEP “is indeed a sign of the district administration’s faith and recognition of the role of the Church in serving society,” says Fr Sony Kalladanthiyil, former Education Secretary of Gorakhpur diocese.

The two ambassador priests are well known in Maharajgang as they have served as principals in several schools in the district.

Fr Jose is currently principal of Christ the King School in Sonauli, close to Indo-Nepal border. He was earlier director of Purvanchal Gramin Seva Samiti, the social service wing of the SyroMalabar diocese.

Fr Appasseril is the principal of Little Flower School Maharajganj.

“We have a jagrigta rath (awareness chariot) and a team each of street play, and puppet theater troupes which we have deployed to create awareness among the rural population in the district,” Fr Jose, who has been a priest for 10 years in Gorakhpur diocese, told Matters India.

He noted that the district had recorded the lowest polling rate in Uttar Pradesh in the last general election.

“Also we are engaging school children in the campaign to ensure pledges from their parents to exercise their vote, through dances, posters and signature campaigns,” said Fr Jose, who sounded confident of the priests’

Pope John Paul II erected the Gorakhpur diocese 30 years ago with Fr Dominic Kokkat, a member of the Congregation of St Teresa, as its first bishop.

The diocese comprises of seven districts of Uttar Pradesh: Gorakhpur, Deoria, Sant Kabirnagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Siddharthnagar, covering an area of 19,070 sq km.

It has a population of about 17.2 million, of which the courtesy: mattersindia Catholics number some 3,500.
