Pope is invited to address US Congress United States: Pope Francis has been invited by House Speaker John Boehner to speak to a joint session of Congress. Boehner extended the formal invitation today in a letter to the Vatican — on the one-year anniversary of his papacy — saying the Holy Father has “awakened hearts on every continent.”. “Pope Francis has inspired millions of Americans with his pastoral manner and servant leadership, challenging all people to lead lives of mercy, forgiveness, solidarity, and humble service,” Boehner wrote. “His tireless call for the protection of the most vulnerable among us — the ailing, the disadvantaged, the unemployed, the impoverished, the unborn — has awakened hearts on every continent.” Boehner, a Catholic, said the pope’s message “challenges people of all faiths, ideologies and political parties.” Since Paul VI made his first papal visit to the United States in 1965, three popes have come to America. John Paul II, who came to the United States seven times, visited with every president from Jimmy Carter to Bill Clinton. A pope has visited the United Nations four times, but one has never addressed the House and Senate during a joint session. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, also a Catholic, joined the speaker in his invitation. “Whether inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, who cared for all of God’s creation, or by St. Joseph, protector of the church,” Pelosi said, “Pope Francis has lived his values and upheld his promise to be a moral force, to protect the poor and the needy, to serve as a champion of the less fortunate, and to promote love and understanding among faiths and nations.” Congressional officials told ABC News they did not know whether Pope Francis would accept the invitation to visit Washington. It is an open-ended invitation, aides said. “His social teachings, rooted in ‘the joy of the gospel,’ have prompted careful reflection and vigorous dialogue among people of all ideologies and religious views in the United States and throughout a rapidly changing world,” Boehner said, “particularly among those who champion human dignity, freedom, and social justice. ”

Indian Raga W

hat I presumed to be the morning raga and the chant ing of mantras of ‘namo namo’ turned out to be just swishing in the air…..without substance, words or melody! Years ago, on my first night in that renowned retreat house, I was gently shaken out of my deep slumber by the wafting of a raga so sweet, I shook myself fully awake and sat as though in a trance, straining to pick up the music. Beyond the window I could see the slight colouring of the eastern sky against the dark silhouette of the mighty trees that covered the grounds. As I sat in silence, the gentle notes built up in volume and speed, accompanied by more instruments, the brass cymbals setting a resonant rhythm to the song rendered up by deep bass voices. The sitar, tabla and cymbals blended beautifully with the clear lyrics and the clapping of palms. It swayed all creation, carrying it in a current of piety as a new day was gifted to mankind. Competing with the chirping of hundreds of little winged creatures from the trees, the singing seems to acquire a new quality, all its own! The morning raga washed over the ashram, sending waves of devotion across the vast acres, touching chords in every heart. The sun still lurked behind the horizon but the branches of trees had turned to gold with the first rays of the rising sun which was still fighting shy of appearing lest it disrupt the devotion! It was the most pleasant experience of a

Whoever coined these terms has never heard or experienced a beautiful morning raga in his life!... morning raga in the Retreat House which I carry close to my heart, till this day. Down South, dawn is often greeted with the morning raga of classical vocal, accompanied by the strumming of the Sitar. In this part of India culture stares one in the face via the music, dance, drama, temples, architecture, flowers and the tinkling sound of ‘gungroo’ the tiny anklet bells of dancers. Here they wake up to melody and music and the morning raga is woven into the beginning of a new day. To inhale the rich aroma of brewing coffee is also to inhale the notes of the classical morning raga emanating from many households where the aspiring singers train to excel. The sweet classical music moves even hardened rockdisco lovers to acknowledge the splendour of Indian raga and the chanting of mantras of worship, “namo,

BY VERA ALVARES namo” Then there was the movie, ‘Morning Raga’-simple, straight-forward and musical, giving one of our great actresses an opportunity to lip-sync to a memorable morning raga! And she did it to perfection, endearing it to even novices like me. The landscapes in the movie, a slice of rural India, enhanced the beauty of this raga, appreciated by true lovers of music and art. It may have failed to shout from the rooftops but it definitely shook the foundations of commercial films. But of late, Indians have been presented with another set of Raga and Namo, confusing the mind and draining the spirit. The unsightly replicas of what is interpreted as ‘raga’ and ‘namo’ and the cacophony of verbal matches blaring over the TV, radio, from every other venue is an onslaught on the senses, leaving us fuming at the nostrils. While slandering each other, the subjects seem to have happily accepted the acronyms in the false notion that they symbolise their worth and value. Whoever coined these terms has never heard or experienced a beautiful morning raga in his life! Novices lost in the woods of journalism?

Women Power The country just celebrated Women’s day on the 8th of this month and it only appropriate that we assess the real power of the women in India particularly on the political front. It is from here that power flows down. Even the so called democratically advanced countries cannot match the ‘woman’ power in politics in India. The subcontinent as a whole has seen tremendous woman power be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka from the 1970s. We have Sonia Gandhi heading the country’s biggest party. Her word is law and when she opens her mouth all down the line keeps their mouths shut. If she decides on something that is final and even the Prime Minister has no option. She has held the party together with a firm grip. Her power is absolute with CWC etc being show pieces. The appointments to various posts are guided by the loyalty index rather that the suitability / capability. Appointment of Home Ministers, in the UPA regime, is one such example. We have other powerful ladies. Jayalalitha of AIDMK in Tamil Nadu is one. She is soft spoken and also talks less. Amma as she is known decides on almost everything. Nobody dare question her policies, appointments, dismissals etc. What she says is binding. She goes about her work in a dignified manner and maintains decorum. By contrast, you have TMC’s Mamata Banerji a fire brand politician from West Bengal. She is vociferous and believes in being heard. Other leaders in the party are pigmies. Didi to her party men, functions like a dictator and shows her disenchantment openly even if it means breaking well set alliances. She brooks no dissent or criticism which is dangerous. Power has gone to her head but showcases humility. Mayawati, Behenji is another all powerful woman leader belonging to the backward class. She has held unchallenged sway over the party – the BSP in UP founded by Kanshi Ram. After he became too ill to function effectively, she donned the mantle of her mentor and since then has been the undisputed and unchallenged leader of her party. Before she came on the scene, the Congress and the BJP played significant role in the State. Now both these parties stand dislodged with only the Samajwadi Party being able to chal-

VIEWS on NEWS lenge her supremacy. Despite multiple challenges on the legal front, she has stood firm. BJP’s Sushma Swaraj the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha has been dwarfed by the sudden emergence of Narendra Modi, a regional player. Her frustration is now showing with open dissent against the induction of tainted Srimanulu in Karnataka. She was ignored. She has the tacit support of the elder sulking statesmen – L.K.Advani and Dr M M Joshi. She feels totally sidelined and irrelevant [as she stood a good chance of being the PM] because once NaMo takes the centre stage it will be nigh impossible to dislodge him in a hurry. He is relatively young and administratively tested for his governance. He is the choice of the rank and file of the party as well as the youth of the nation. With the backing of the RSS, his role in the party is well cemented and fortified as well. BJP termed Rahul Gandhi a reluctant groom, but they do not realize that Sushmaji feels like a rejected bride. Who knows Digvijaya Singh, who recently raked up Modi’s marital status without any response, may pick up this line in his next diatribe against the PM-in-waiting? *****

AAM [Party] Losing Its Taste? BJP workers are hounding the AAP leaders particularly Arvind Kejrival. It gives an impression that he is persona non grata as far as Narendra Modi’s Gujarat is concerned. He was even stopped some 5 kilometers from the residence of the CM when the former Delhi CM decided to meet him to hand over a list of some 16 questions. But AK, your questions might be pertinent but that does not mean that you have to go all the way to his residence to hand them over. You could have issued a press note listing all the queries and the media would have taken the matter forward to its logical end. But you feel that the media is being paid by big business houses. You could have sent them to the CMO. Like you, Modi is also busy. Besides fighting elections he is also the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP

by Marshall Sequeira and therefore doubly busy. You cannot expect him to be available to you at short notice and there is no reason why he should do so. Perhaps Modi realized that you were indulging in theatrics but the mission failed miserably. You too, Mr Kejrival, are busy with more important things to do than rush to CM’s house. Having wasted time you got delayed and therefore were obliged to take a luxury chartered flight provided by those who wanted you to attend their programme. Yes, it was provided free of cost but if such an offer clashes with your stated principles of austerity and simple living, then you must put your foot down. It is not clear what type of transport was provided to you from the airport to the venue. If they had to send a Mercedes or a BMW would you have accepted it just because someone provided it? Great men have reached that stature because of their sustained adherence to their stated values and principles. When Gandhiji decided to shun western clothes and wear only a dhoti, he stuck to it [bare-chested] even when he attended the Round Table Conference in London. A young boy even offered to provide him a shirt. Austerity cannot be selective. The inexperience of the Aam Party is showing. They do not know where to draw the line and have come under fire from the CEC. It is nice to indulge in theatrics but when such gimmicks become the order of the day, they lose the sheen. The incidents of hooliganism in Mumbai and senior leaders crying foul in the matter of ticket distribution are sending wrong signals. Assault on the media was uncalled for. A party with handful of members is in disarray. Yet, the continuous fall in the brand value of Anna Hazare because of his indecisiveness may help the AAP. Annaji is a highly confused man today. Does he subscribe to BJP or TMC philosophy or is he simply trying to pull AK down?

I

t was just a little after midnight of March 13th - 14th 2013. Like millions of others all over the world, I too was impatiently waiting for that white smoke which would emerge from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican heralding the news that a new Pope was elected. There were all kinds of rumours of the “going-ons” :who would be elected, what are the possibilities, how long it would take etc etc and suddenly the ticker on one of the news channel which I was searching on my computer, announced that the plume of white smoke had emerged. A Pope had been elected! A Pope elected! But who was he? From where was he? Was he one of the ‘papabili’? There were hundreds of questions that crossed my mind as I desperately tried to look for the answer from one news site to another and suddenly the spokesperson from the Vatican arrived at the window telling us that name ‘Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio’ from Argentina was elected as Pope and would take the name of ‘Francis’. Then ‘Bergoglio’ who? I had never heard of him? And why the name of Francis? Just as I was doing a ‘google search’ I got a call from a friend congratulating me for the first Jesuit Pope in history; my reply was “a Jesuit? It just cannot be!” I had taken for granted that a Jesuit cannot become a Pope. Well my ‘google search’, was still on and my friend was really right! Bergoglio was indeed a Jesuit – a well-known one at that. In the meantime, I began receiving email mes-

Happy New Year, BY FR. CEDRIC PRAKASH SJ thrown not only to me but to all of us. Personally, I am challenged in several ways.

Pope Francis challenges me to simplicity

O

Pope Francis! sages, texts and calls from all over. I was too excited to speak that night. And then I was in for a shock. As millions of people both in the Vatican Square and across the world watched, Pope Francis wished all gathered a very simple ‘good evening’ and in a style that was soon going to be the hallmark of his papacy, he asked for the prayers of ‘all men and women of goodwill to help him lead the Catholic Church’. This was something out of the ordinary. No Pope had ever done that before! The revolution had begun! A revolution indeed! As I look back at this one eventful year for the Catholic Church and perhaps for the whole world, I try to place before me the challenges that Pope Francis has

Wow! This man has taken the name he chose “Francis” all too seriously! His gestures and actions have gone beyond the ‘cosmetic’ or ‘symbolic’ - All of us seem to be noticing everything: the fact that he has refused to stay in the Papal mansions; that his attire and even his shoes are not what the past Popes ordinarily wore; his sensitivity to make a phone call or to write a letter to the most ordinary person in a most unassuming way; the fact that he can allow a little child to slowly walk up to the stage and literally take his seat; the affection he exudes when he embraces a man with a disfigured face; his warm simple gestures all the time has indeed warmed the cockles of many a heart. St. Francis of Assisi whose name he chose must surely be smiling from above, that the head of the Catholic Church today has the courage to take him and all that he stood for very, very seriously.

Pope Francis challenges me to be inclusive

O

And Pope Francis has done this in a most amazing way. He has reached out to perhaps every group on Planet Earth very specially to the poor, to the marginalized, to the minorities. On July 8th, 2013, he visited the Sicilian island of Lampedusa (which is closer to North Africa than mainland Italy) which sees the influx of thousands of immigrants

24 March 2014

from Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Egypt and other parts of North Africa as they seek a better future in Europe. In his homily, he greeted those present saying, “I give a thought, too, to the dear Muslim immigrants that are beginning the fast of Ramadan, with best wishes for abundant spiritual fruits. The Church is near to you in the search for a more dignified life for yourselves and for your families”. A clear message to one and all that Christianity is about inclusiveness, about going to the margins and welcoming “the least of our sisters and brothers”. The Holy Father then continued with a very powerful message to the whole world: “Today no one in the world feels responsible for this (the deaths of immigrants); we have lost the sense of fraternal responsibility; we have fallen into the hypocritical attitude of the priest and of the servant of the altar that Jesus speaks about in the parable of the Good Samaritan: we look upon the brother half-dead by the roadside, perhaps we think “poor guy,” and we continue on our way; it’s none of our business; and we feel fine with this. We feel at peace with this, we feel fine! The culture of well-being, that makes us think of ourselves, that makes us insensitive to the cries of others, that makes us live in soap bubbles, that are beautiful but are nothing, are illusions of futility, of the transient, that brings indifference to others, that brings even the globalization of indifference. In this world of globalization, we have fallen into a globalization of indifference. We are accustomed to the suffering of others, it doesn’t concern us, it’s none of our business.”

Pope Francis challenges me to live the Joy of the Gospel

O

On November 24th, at the conclusion of the year of the Faith, Pope Francis gave to the world his first Apostolic Exhortation entitled “Evangelii Gaudium” (the Joy of the Gospel). In this path-breaking document, he literally challenges the Christians to transcend their narrowness and selfcentredness in order to truly understand the person and message of Jesus. In no uncertain terms, he reminds all that “the Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continues interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from selfgiving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. The Son of God, by becoming flesh, summoned us to the revolution of tenderness”.

Pope Francis challenges me to be more of a Jesuit

O

It still is such a dream that the Pope is a Jesuit - something perhaps unthinkable just over a year ago. I

joined the Jesuits in 1974 when General Congregation XXXII became a watershed for Jesuits the world over with the faith-justice mandate becoming the heart of the Jesuit way of proceeding. In his one year as Pope, the world has not lost sight of the fact that Francis is a Jesuit to the very core. His words, his actions, his attitudes are Jesuit through and through. When he speaks about “conversion” he is obviously using the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola which has been so dear to him right from the time he joined the Society of Jesus. In his native Argentina, he always championed the cause of the poor. Last December, he canonized Peter Favre, a close companion of St. Ignatius of Loyola whom he praised for being “in dialogue with all, even the most remote and even with his opponents.” Pope Francis has constantly been searching for the magis in all things just as St. Ignatius wanted all Jesuits to be doing so. Challenges indeed for me and for all and I am sure in the years ahead, we will have many more challenges - Happy New Year, dear Pope Francis! Thank you for being my Pope, my brother and my Shepherd! My short vacation at my home town Mangalore, had also coincided with the campaign visit of India’s most popular and Prime Ministerial favorite candidate NarendraModi. The city was lit up in exult and euphoria, and a day before modi’s arrival, a teenager wearing Modi’s face mask walked straight into me and asked ‘Are You Modified’? It sounded funny, I had no answer, just muttered ‘ No, I am Terrified! Managing the affairs of the state isn’t easy, certainly not in a country as much complex and diverse as India. A statesman requires tremendous mental energy and tactics to counter adversaries and Political rivalries. Apart from mass management, he has to exhibit a penchant for the kind of leadership found in a military general or a medieval Indian emperor. Most great statesmen have been inspirational and innovative thinkers. Leadership comes natural to them, Leaders are born not made. Some of the greatest statesmen have created revolutionary impacts during their reigns. Lets look at some of the men who being at the helm of affairs in their states, made historic moves that proved turning factor in their country’s endeavors. Franklin rooselvet was a statesman for crisis, he didn’t promise, he delivered. It was the time of great depression in 1933, whileAmerica went hungry, businessmen & stock traders committed suicide in the streets and unemployment spread in rampage. Rooselvelt used facilitationof eminentBritish economists John Maynard Keynes to overcome massive unemployment and to restructure the economic debacle of the era as a whole. Free food was served to the workers and the profit was divided equally among all classes, funds were mobilized to counter future constraints. Within few years as the American President, Rooselvelt was able to restore his country’s economy and redeem its honor from the jaws of worst financial crisis ever.

have served as the premier institutes in producing iconic individuals in the country. Nehru’s charisma was able to conquer the country’s millions, as he successfully won mandate for a period of seventeen long years. LalBahudurShastri was the india’s second elected prime minister. A simple and down to earth individual shastri sustained major infiltration in Kashmir from Pakistani militantsin the year 1965, where eventually Pakistan surrendered. His brief period at the top saw developments in agriculture sector, popularly hailed as the ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’. After the untimely and little mysterious death of LalBahudurshastri( government confirmed heart attack) in 1967, Indira Gandhi the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru was sworn in as the third prime minister of the country. After few years of able governance, economic stability and the triumphant Bangladesh liberation war against Pakistan, Indira Gandhi’s government came under scanner. The veteran AntiCorruption crusader and activistJayprakash Narayan and Socialist Labour Union Leader George Fernandes vociferously confronted Indira Gandhi’s government of fraud, Corruption, bribery, favoritism and electoral fraud . And as the media and the opposition also got stronger in its denouncement of her government, Indira Gandhi resorted to Autocracy and immediately reinstated emergency rule, whereby suspending democracy. Large scale demonstrations were organized throughout, many leaders, journalists, activists were put behind bars, tortured and even killed inside the cells. And finally her government was routed out in the 1977 general elections as the Janata Party swept the mandate. Post Indira Gandhi, several leaders rose to power and departed, and none was able to keep up the tempo that Nehru, Shastri and Indira Gandhi had maintained. The charisma was lost and so did the people’s confidence. Politicians were seen with suspicion and people’s faith began to deplete.

up? NarendraModi has become a popular figure in the political circles and has won mass following. His admirers worship him. The social media has been flooded withNarendramodi’s promos and has been lauded by his admirers as Namo and mocked by his detractors as Feku.Neverthless, the RSS and the BJP showed no second thoughts in appointing him as their Prime Ministrial candidate, amidst resentment from renowned Veteran BJP Leader LK Advani. NarendraModi’s history is colored with shades of progressive and divisive politics. That largely symbolizes a man with a smart mind and an evil heart. He cleverly uses crowd psyche and amends his speeches accordingly. While on campaign, he insidiously uses secularism, nationalism and communalism all in one. Modi isn’t a great orator, but frames his speeches with slap stick dialogues that easily pull crowds. Although his vote bank and crowds make up of both rural population and the urban middle class English speakers, Modi’s command over the English language looks skeptical. Some say his English is as bad as Sonia Gandhi’s Hindi! Nevertheless, His targets are soft, those that don’t bite back. A frequent target is the ruling Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul, her Son-in-Law , her Political Dynastyand the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. He accuses congress party as the epitome of corruption and often quotes his famous dialogue ‘Congress and Corruption are twin brothers, that can never be separated. On the other hand, Modi has never been critical of the more notorious figure in the hell-world of corruption and crime,SharadPowar. Infact, some allegeSharad Power as the most corrupt man living on the planet! SharadPowar has the crowd, the corporate india and the mafia on his side, which makes matters difficult or rather impossible to nail him. And so far only Anna Hazzarehas effectively pointed a finger at this political monster. . Modi speaks a lot and hardly lis-

tens, his temper is fragile, and habitually frails when questions irk him. Modi’s fourteen years span as the chief minister of Gujarath is marked with mixed outlines of polarization and convergence, hate and reconciliation, prejudice and tolerance, xenophobia and moderation, Destruction and Reconstruction. Under Modi, Gujarathhas built up dominance in infrastructure and governance. While its Social development index and community integration is one of the lowest in the contry. Although, Gujarath is no better than other well developed states in the country, and as more or less same living standard and life style, its marketing and Modis PR is executed with acute competence and spectacular hype. Although the, Corporate controlled Media has been standing by his side and has been covertly promoting him as a brand, there are independent writers who maraud critical essays and columnsabout his views and deeds. But for Modi, no negative publicity is a bad publicity Rahul Gandhi ‘s name appears as the front runner for the congress party’s prime ministerial candidacy. Being the son of the congress party supremo Sonia Gandhi, it has been a rather easy route for him in the political sphere. Rahul has been object of ridicule and parody across the social media and the blogosphere. His verbal delivery, general knowledge and his leadership skills are pegged with giant question marks. His party has been plagued by accusations of massive corruption, misuse of funds, nepotism, bribery, crony capitalism etc. So far, Rahul Gandhi hasn’t been successful in erasing the black scars labelled all over his party. Rahul Gandhi hasn’t spoken out on core issues, nor has connected to the young educated masses. He has sought only the ruler vote bank. In his speeches he repeatedly emphasizes on change, but ten years of his party’s ruling has brought about inflation, incompetence and economic debacle. Nobody is aware about his ideas, his foresight for the country. His disposition as a leader has met with serious limitations. He suspends hard work for (Contd.. on p. 16)

Opinion polls predict Congress rout

If opinion polls are to be believed, then the inevitable result of such polls conducted in different states of the country, is the ignominious rout of the congress and an upswing in the BJP votes. Even Karnataka which witnessed mega mining scams under the BJP rule during the tenure of former chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa has not changed its mindset , with the BJP all set to capture 45% of the votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is unlike what happened in Goa, where the people, disgusted with years of misrule and corruption of former Congress govts, voted all out in favour of the BJP in the last Assembly elections. Today, the political landscape has changed nationwide. Both the Congress and the BJP are seen as corrupt and no different from each other. This

Food Security Bill – a challenge before the Church in India Gandhiji in his most cherished book “India of my dream” says: “We should be ashamed of resting or having a square meal so long as there is one able-bodied man or woman without work or food.” Inspired by these words Sonia Gandhi, the chief of Congress Party (certainly a follower of Jesus) first introduced MNREGA and now introduced RTF to provide food to the millions of our poor brothers/sisters who are forced to go to bed daily with empty stomach and save the lives of millions mal/under nourished children who die immaturely. In my view the Lord has in his goodness, providentially opened, before us, the Church in India, a new and the most urgent avenue of service to our millions of poor starving brothers/ sisters in the country. As happens in India many of the government schemes mean for the welfare of the poor, fail to get implemented because of either corruption in the public sector or because of the ignorance and the consequentl inability on the part of the beneficiaries of these schemes. RTF will require having the adhar card, a

10

bank account etc and of course, the proper understanding of the RTF. Here is where, especially the parishes, can either initiate a new ministry or add to the ‘Vicent de Paul’ association an organized campaign of educating the poor in the parish area regarding the scheme, assist them in getting the adhar card, opening as well as handling the Bank Account and making sure that the beneficiaries get the full benefit of the RTF. Our schools and the colleges can also take up such campaign through the students studying with us. As we are searching for the new avenues of our services in the present contexts of the world, the following words of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, may inspire and encourage us to embrace this new avenue of Jesuit services in India. “For the poor the economic is the spiritual. You cannot make any other appeal to those starving millions. It will fall flat on them. But you take food to them and they will regard you as their God. They are incapable of any other thought.” (Young India, 5-5-’27) “ With this very hand I have col-

lected soiled pies from them tied tightly in their rags. Talk to them of modern progress. Insult them by taking the name of God before them in vain. They will call you and me fiends if we talk about God to them. They know, if they know God at all, a God of terror, vengeance, a pitiless tyrant.” (Young India, 15-9-’27) William Macwan, S.J. Christians with one voice at Azad Maidan:

‘Save Our Land’

A massive rally was held at Azad Maidan on 15th March 2014 to highlight minority concerns particularly Christians. The community is upset with the Maharashtra State Governments’ apathy towards the community on several issues and has decided to come out on the streets to agitate. The rally and meeting at in Azad Maidan was called by an alliance of over 30 Christian organizations and local parishes and some prominent civil society leaders joined the protest. A memorandum of demands was also handed over to municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte. The protest was triggered by notices from the municipal corporation, issued two years ago to St Anthony's Church and St Anthony's School, in Malwani, for acquisition of land to widen the road running alongside these institutions. Similar notices have also been received by Our Lady of Assumption Church nd St Joseph School in Kandivli. The community has also demanded withdrawal of notices for demolition of Crosses in various parts of the city and the protection of Gaonthans. Community members explained that while they had no objections to development, the road-widening project had done injustice to them as the original plan was changed to take away church land. "The road line has been there since 1971. According to the road line, the widening should be done on either side of the existing median. In that case we would have had to give up about 10,000 sq ft and not 25,000 sq ft. But since three buildings have come up on the other side, they have changed the road line and will take all the land from us," said Fr Austin Norris, parish priest, St Anthony's Church. "These buildings came up in 2000. When the BMC knew that it had to widen the road there was no reason for it to allow the buildings to come up. These land acquisition notices must be withdrawn," said Dolphy D'Souza, spokesperson of Save Our Land (SOUL), which is spearheading the agitation. "This is a situation where we have to ensure that our lands are saved," said Sailesh Gandhi. Judge Suresh slammed the majoritarianism that has crept into the system. "Today there is a rule by the majority (community) and not of the majority (who vote)," he said. The municipal commissioner acknowledge receiving a memorandum on the issues and said, "They have given me a representation and we will examine it." Several prominent Christians and others spoke on the occasion highliting the issues of minority and specially demanding permanent withdrawal of unjust BMC land acquisition notices. The agitation rally was organised with the support of over 30 organisations under the umbrella of SOUL - Save Our Land.

Catholic Priest Wins National Literary Award Panaji: Father Francis D’Britto’s Bible translation was among 23 books India’s top literary committee selected for its prestigious annual awards. This is the first time a Bible translation has been bestowed a national award in India. An environmentalist, journalist and author, the 71-year-old priest Father D’Britto received the award for ‘Subodh Bible – Nava Karar’, a Marathi translation of the Bible. The prize carries an amount of 50,000 rupees and a copper plaque. It will be presented at a special function to be held in August 2014, said an Akademi press release. The executive board of the Sahitya Akademi met at Ravbindra Bhavan New Delhi under the chairmanship of President Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari on Monday and approved 23 books for the Sahitya translation prize 2013. The books were selected on the recommendation of a selection committee of three members in each language for translations first published during the five years between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2011. The1200-page Marathi edition of the Bible translation by Father D'Britto was published by Rajhans Prakashan on June 20, 2010. The first edition of Subodh Bible was sold out within 20 days after its publication and had set a publishing record in the 200-year-history of Marathi edition of the scripture, which began when Reverend William Carey first published a part of the Bible in Marathi in West Bengal in 1807. Anand Hardikar, editor of Rajhans Prakashan, had attributed the overwhelming response to the Bible translation to the popular writing style of Father D'Britto, whose other books in Marathi have won readers' acclaim. The priest began writing profusely after he launched the Harit (green) Vasai Movement in 1989 to save the environment and made headlines

for carrying out the command of the Lord to proclaim the good news to the ends of the earth in season and out of season. He said the committed leaders in this apostolate are the members of the Society of St Paul, carrying on the charism given them by Blessed James Alberione. In his keynote address Monsignor Paul Tighe, Secretary, Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Vatican City, Rome, focused on the 50th anniversary of Inter Mirifica, its achievements as a document of Vatican II. According to him, “it is a heavily criti-

cized document; at the same time it placed communications media on the agenda of the Church’s mission”. Speaking on the advantages of the new media, Fr Jeffrey Mickler from Ohio, USA , a member of the Society of St Paul, said, “God’s capacity to speak to the people has been changed with the development in media technology. And people’s capacity to listen and understand has altered, too.” He also spoke at length on the unique charism handed over t5o the Church by Blessed James Alberione, the founder of the Pauline family. Fr George Plathottam, SDB, representing the CBCI Office for Social communications, spoke extensively on the theme: ‘Social Communications and Mission of the Church in India’. When I’m Growing Old, Hold My Hand

y steps are slow, my body is growing weak and my eyes dim, my hearing and speech impaired, but I reminiscence my past with joy when I fondled you in my arms and helped you walk, wiped your nose and dressed you up’. This would probably be any aging mothers’ thoughts. As a priest, I have been at the death-bed of people as old as ninety four. I have seen their feelings in their passing moments ranging from regret to rejoicing. Regret when children abandon their hands that rocked their cradles and rejoicing at the way their children

have walked with them in the evening of their life. The scriptures urge us to count on an ever Faithful God who will save us from distressful thoughts as we journey away from this world. “Even to your old age I am He, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save (Isaiah46:4). “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day in the Lord” (2Cor 4:16). “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength”(Is 40:29). The scriptures also promise great blessings upon those who respect and care for their aging parents, blessings that all the worlds’ money cannot buy. “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Proverbs 23:22). “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Deuteronomy 5:16). “Listen my son, to your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck” (Proverbs 1:89) Polish-born American Jewish theologian and philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel writes “A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old, the helpless

are the gold mines of a culture”. Waiting lists at homes for aged today are swelling to enormous proportions indicative of a culture of growing neglect for the old. The race for time and money can snatch away from children the desire to be with their parents when they need them most. A young man lost his patience with his aging father who frequently dropped porcelain cups while he sipped his soup. He and his wife got him a wooden bowl and sat him in a corner of the room every day at dinner. Two weeks later, the couple found their seven-year old busy with pieces of wood. They asked him “Son, what are you so busy with?” To their rude shock, the little boy innocently replied “I’m making two wooden soup bowls; one for papa and one for mamma, because when you grow old you will need them like grandpa does”. Tears welled-up in the eyes of the parents. The old man was restored to the dining table with a new porcelain bowl.

How is the AAP different? 1. There is no central high command in Aam Aadmi party. The party structure follows a bottom to top approach where the council members elect the Executive Body and also holds the power to recall it. 2. No MLA or MP of this party will use red lights or any other beacons on his or her vehicles. 3. No MLA or MP of this party will use any special security. We believe that elected people’s representatives need the same security as a common man.

4. No MLA or MP of our party will live in opulent and luxurious government housing. 5. No one would need to buy an election ticket in our party. Candidates contesting elections from an area will be selected by the people of that area. 6. In all political parties today criminals and mafia goons are given election tickets. Such people will never be given tickets in our party. A thorough screening process will ensure that no one with a criminal record or

Kejriwal symbolizes every urban Indian middle class, who graduates, finds job for a living, marries and runs a family, but also a socially conscious individual. Analumnus from IIT kharagpur, Kejriwal spent few years in government service and later as a hardcore RTI activist. He was the leading member of the Anna Hazareanti-corruption crusade movement. After the Anna movement party members like KiranBedi and Baba Ramdev made alliance with opposition BJP, and annahazare lost steam, ArvindKejriwaldecided to register his own political outfit the AamAdmi partywith his close mates and installed broom as the party’s emblem, and was able to sweep the mandate in Delhi, by driving out the glued chief minister Sheila Dixit out of her seat. His recent resignation as the Chief Minister of Delhi, raises hopes of his chances at the National Front. This election unlike the previous ones, would be more dependent on the Social Media and the Internet world. A substantial amount of campaigning by all three main leaders is done on social media. No two members of the same family will be eligible to contest elections in our party and no two members of the same family can become members of the Executive Body. 10. Today we give our vote to a candidate, he or she wins the election, and then they disappear from our life. Entrepreneurship and Business Francisco D'Souza The 4 Mantras of Successful Entrepreneurs

E

ntrepre neurs who make it beyond their first few “lean and mean” years learn to let the rewards of freedom trump the anxiety of “what if I fail?” They acquire a devotion to the rhythm of riding their vision, unshackled from the slavery of following a conventional schedule. Create a masterpiece daily. Since every day as an entrepreneur is a day you invent, make it a masterpiece. No one cared that Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling for four years in such an awkward position it permanently damaged his health. We simply marvel at the result. Likewise, no one cares about the depth of your inbox, the number of cold calls you made or how many meetings you attended. Only concrete results matter; tireless effort is just the stuff you do to get there. Masterpiece creators do not act as if they are passengers on some cruise ship transporting them to retirement. They assume responsibility for their own destiny, never hiding. Be a joy carrier to those you serve. Successful entrepreneurs are joy carriers bringing a bold spirit to all they

influence. They think positively, assume success, and work with a clear vision of what they want to be, not what just what they have to do. Spirit is not inherited, acquired or borrowed. One chooses spirit much like you choose to introduce yourself to a stranger. Those who opt for an upbeat, positive spirit are happier, healthier, and far more successful. Great entrepreneurs are bold and courageous and their spirit is contagious. Assume complete accountability for results. Playing the blame game does not get you a “get out of jail free” card. Clients and customers are never moved by hand-ringing excuses nor made more confident by shifting the focus to the supplier who failed to deliver. Being late signals a lack of commitment, regardless of the reason. Being unprepared telegraphs you don’t care about your client or customer, despite the demons you tussled the day before. Winners show up ready to perform and are only interested in efforts that yield a path to achievement. Be both a doer and marketer. Successful entrepreneurs are both driven and ardent promoters. This means they don’t just focus on their product, service or solution -- they also market their work. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “If a man has good corn or wood, or boards, or pigs, to sell, or can make better chairs or knives, crucibles or church organs, than anybody else, you will find a broad hardbeaten road to his house, though it be in the woods.” Ralph made no mention of a better mousetrap, and he clearly had no knowledge of the importance of

A special session of the seminar at the prestigious Teen Murti Bhavan was chaired by Mr Navin Chawla, the former Election Commissioner of India. According to him the election Commission of India plays a vital role as the third umpire to oversee the democratic processes in the country. Sociologist cum Educationist T. K. Oommen, award winning journalist Josy Joseph and entertainment journalist Anna MM Vetticad also threw light on ‘India 2025: Democracy and Media’. Each of them spoke of the strengths and weaknesses of Indian democracy and the influence of the media. During the Concelebrated Mass on the first day of the Seminar to mark the two-fold occasion of the centenary of the foundation of the Pauline Family and the Golden Jubilee of the presence of the Society of St Paul in New Delhi , Most Rev. Salvatore Pennacchio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, paid glowing tributes to the members of the Society of St Paul and the entire Pauline Family for their commendable work in the Church through the media apostolate.

Importance of a Budget

B

udgeting is very important in terms of future financial plan ning and is an important part of personal finance. Budgeting is an important part of your personal finances. If you don't budget, or did at one time but stopped, take the time to set something up today. What You Measure, You Can Improve The classic struggle with money is always to spend less than you earn. If you spend more than you earn, you run the risk of burning through your savings and taking on debt. Once you start budgeting, you’ll have a better idea of how much you’re spending and know how much “wiggle room” you have in your monthly spending. Helps In Decision Making By knowing how much you spend on each category, you can make decisions about your spending. Having numbers gives you the information you need to decide whether you are spending too much in one category or spending too little. By writing down each purchase or each expense, you start making active decisions, rather than going along with what you did last month. Budget In Savings

If you don’t budget, chances are your savings strategy is to “save whatever is left at the end of the month.” That’s a bad way to save towards your goals because it’s unpredictable, especially if you’re not budgeting. It’s better to establish an amount and include it in your monthly budget, that way you can be sure to hit your savings targets. It Helps You Plan Once you save up an emergency fund, you start saving for a house or a car, maybe you pay down some debt, or maybe you save towards starting a family. You will reach these goals faster if you manage your finances closely and actively contribute to your savings. We all know we want to achieve certain milestones in our lives, now it’s a matter of putting in a system that gets us there. Keeps You Honest When you have to document every purchase, it keeps you honest. It plugs up the leaks in your budget where money slips out because you weren’t keeping too close tabs on it. Do you just pull cash out of your wallet or purse without any accounting for that money? It’s so easy to take Rs. 500 out of the ATM and just spend it. There’s no accountability, you can spend it on anything and you wouldn’t be the wiser come the end of the month. Avoid Debt, Help Your Credit Here’s a bonus reason that I don’t think most people keep in mind – by budgeting, you avoid debt. By budgeting, you avoid spending more than you earn and you avoid the downward spiral of credit card debt. This will help ensure you have a good credit and credit score so that you can get low interest loans on the things you may want to buy in the future, such as a car or a house.

1. Jesus Christ was crucified, not in a cathedral between two candles, but on a cross between two thieves. 2. The Cross on which Jesus was crucified cannot be defeated, for it is defeat. 3. There are no Crown-wearers in Heaven who were not Cross-bearers here below. 4. We need Men of the Cross, with the Message of the Cross, bearing the Marks of the Cross. 5. Christ’s Cross is such a burden as sails are to a ship or wings to a bird. 6. Jesus Christ came to pay a debt He didn’t owe because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay. 7. The old Cross slew men; the new Cross entertains them. The old Cross condemned; the new Cross amuses. The old Cross destroyed confidence in the flesh; the new Cross encourages it. 8. All heaven is interested in the cross of Christ, all hell is terribly afraid of it, while men are the only beings who more or less ignore its meaning. 9. The Cross: God’s way of uniting suffering with love. 10. The Cross is the lightning rod of grace that short-circuits God’s wrath to Christ so that only the light of His love remains for believers. —Jubel D’Cruz

Times When The Messiah Revealed His Resurrection The best way to understand why the season of lent had to happen, is to imagine what it would be like if it did not. There is a logical necessity in the reality of remembering Jesus’ Passion, his brutal and violent physical suffering at the hands of the Romans his tortured mind at the infamous words of condemnation raised by the Jews and his spiritual agony in the place called Gethsemane. The season of lent guides us to the joyful proclamation of Easter. An ancient version of Psalm (138 V 18b) says, ‘Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum’ which means, “I have risen, I am still with you, forever.” The Lenten period goes back to the time of the Apostles. Lent is when we prepare our individual self in a soulful and devotional cleansing for the greatest Christian festival, Easter. Jesus, the promised Messiah, had to suffer. He had to die His passion and resurrection was to be in fulfillment of what the prophets had relayed in the open and heroic messages – the coming of the Messiah, the Christ who would save man from his sin and wickedness. We meditate, this week in lent on the affirmation that Jesus knew the role he was commissioned to accomplish. His pain and sacrifice would be the supreme ransom paid for man’s iniquity, his life given to rescue humanity from the scourge of evil. This is Christ’s allconquering divine nature. Yes, in three

different encounters Jesus had revealed his resurrection. Our Lord went up to Jerusalem a few days before the Passover of the Jews. He went first to visit the temple and was furious on seeing moneychangers and men who had brought sheep and ox and pigeons to do their business. After Jesus had driven them and their animals out of the temple, the Jews asked him to show them a sign to support his words, “Take these things away; you shall not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” (Jn.2:16). He turned to them and answered: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (Jn.2:19). Note the words: Temple, Three days and Raise. Christ had revealed his coming resurrection. The Transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain, in the presence of Peter, James and John (Mat.17:1-9) was a dramatic event which Christ did not want his apostles to disclose, till after his resurrection. “And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus told them, “Tell no

BY MELVYN BROWN one of the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead. Jesus had thus predicted his resurrection. Our lifelong obsession is in the faith we possess in Christ, as the centerpiece of our world. The experience of Christianity is Jesus’ suffering, which is the bone marrow of salvation. Forgiveness and humility, perhaps two of the most difficult attributes of Christian faith is bound in the theology of ‘compassion for humanity’. Once again, for the third time Jesus spoke of his resurrection. This time to Martha; Jesus said to her, “ I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” (Jn.11:25-26). The meditative adoration of the Cross reminds us of Jesus, the scourging, the crowning of thorns, the way of the Cross, the nails being driven into his hands and feet. “He was wounded for our transgressions,” said the prophet Isaiah, adding, “ He was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed.” (Is.53:5). Holy Mother the Church selects the lines from the second letter of Paul to Timothy for us to meditate on at lent. 2Tim.1:8-10. “Our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” Jesus continues to fascinate the non-believer worldwide, enriches our trust and faith in Him, and we will forever celebrate the atonement which leads to the salvation of humankind. His blood flows from his wounded side, washing away our sin _ praise God for the promise of eternal life! During lent say this prayer daily : SOUL OF CHRIST SANCTIFY ME.
