Model Bank Distributes Scholarships to Talented Students

Mumbai: Model Co-operative Bank Limited gave away annual scholarships to talented children of its shareholders, accountholders and staff at St Xavier Engineering College auditorium, Mahim (West) here on Thursday November 14 evening.

The Bank chairman Albert W D’Souza presided over the function. Campus minister of St John Technical College and Managing Trustee of Fatima Devi High School, Malad Rev. Fr John Rumao was the chief guest presented scholarship to 79 students on the occasion.

Many Christians Worldwide Suffer For Their Faith — Pope Vatican City: Many Christians worldwide suffer for their fidelity to Christ, perhaps more "today than in the first centuries . We are close to them with prayer and admiration, are brothers and sisters in the faith. Pray for them, we all pray for them", said the Pope during the Angelus today, developing on his comments on the Gospel passage that recounts Jesus description of "the end times" in Jerusalem. The Pope urged people not to place their trust in "false messiahs and sorcerers" who are "still" present in our world. And before he bid farewell to the faithful "I would suggest "a special medicine, called Misericordina.

The Pope is not your pharmacist, but I invite you to take this little box that contains the Rosary and pray: it's good for us all."

The evangelist Luke writes, says the Pope, that the speech is pronounced by Christ "near the temple, and he was inspired by the people who talked about the temple and its beauty . Because it was beautiful at the time.

Then Jesus said "the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down" (Lk 21:6) . Of course they ask : When will this happen? What will the signs be? But Jesus shifts the focus from these secondary aspects - when will it be? What will it be like? - the real issues . There are two. Firstly, do not be fooled by false messiahs and do not be paralyzed by fear. Second: live the time of waiting as a time of witness and perseverance. And we are in this time of waiting for the coming of the Lord".

Jesus' discourse, the Pope immediately adds, "is always current, even for us who live in the XXI century. He tells us :"Take heed that you not be deceived . Many will come in my name" ( v. 8). It is a call to discernment, this Christian virtue to understand the difference between the spirit of the Lord and the spirit of evil. Even today, in fact, there are false " saviors" , who attempt to substitute leaders of this world, holy men , even sorcerers for Jesus, people who want to attract hearts and minds, especially of young people, to themselves. Jesus warns us: "Do not follow them". And the Lord also helps us to not be afraid when faced with wars , revolutions , but also to natural disasters , epidemics, Jesus frees us from fatalism and false apocalyptic visions . " The second aspect is a challenge for us as Christians and the Church: Jesus speaks of the painful trials and persecutions that his disciples will have to suffer because of Him . Communicating The Word To The World

ne of the most important days or months of significance ob served annually by the Church Universal is WORLD COMMUNICATIONS MONTH in November, World Communications Day being celebrated this year on 17 November. Significantly, it was on 26 November 1971 that Father James Alberione, the Founder of what has come to be known as the Pauline Family, went to his reward which he finally earned on 27 April 2003 when Pope [since Blessed] John Paul II beatified him!

Alberionean initiative Analytically, there is much of significance in this happy coincidence. For one, at a time when the use of the use of the media was frowned upon by the

Church, Blessed James Alberione was deeply convinced that every medium of communication—be it the written or printed word, sound and light, the radio, oratory, music or whatever—misused for evil purposes, can be used for proclaiming God’s Word by way of promoting Gospel values [read human values]. Secondly, he chose the most media savvy proclaimer of the Gospel ever, viz. the Apostle Saint Paul, as the patron of the first religious congregation he founded, i.e., the Society of Saint Paul (1914). Notably, Alberione spared no pain to tell his sons and daughters in the Apostolate that it is Paul who was their real Founder and

Father. Indeed! Is it not on Paul’s Letters that the Church’s entire Theology is based!?!

Thirdly, Alberione constantly reminded his followers that they were born of the Word (and of the Eucharist).

It is not difficult to see that it is the Word that was made flesh at the Incarnation (and in the Eucharist), it is the Word that is expressed in every good utterance and in every good act, it is the Word that the Media transmits by way of all things nice and beautiful, bringing alive the Genesis sentiment: “God saw that it was good� [1:10b].

perish " ( v.18). In short , said Francis, "reminds us that we are totally in the hands of God! The adversity we meet for our faith and our commitment to the Gospel are occasions of testimony and they should not turn us away from the Lord, but force us to abandon ourselves to Him even more, to the power of his Spirit and his grace. At this time, my thoughts and all our thoughts - let's do it together - go to so many Christian brothers and sisters who suffer persecution because of their faith. There are many of them, perhaps many more of the early centuries. Jesus is with them, and also we are united with them with our prayers and our love . We admire their courage and testimony. They are our brothers and sisters, who in many parts of the world suffer for their fidelity to Jesus Christ. We send them our heartfelt greetings and our affection. "

In the end, Jesus makes a promise that is a guarantee of victory: "By your perseverance you will secure your lives" ( v.19 ) . How much hope in these words! They are a reminder of the hope and patience, to be able to wait for the fruits of salvation certain, confident in the profound sense of life and of history: the trials and difficulties are part of a bigger picture , and the Lord , the Lord of history, leads all to its fulfillment . Despite the turmoil and disasters that affect the world, God's plan of goodness and mercy will be fulfilled ! And this is our hope. Travelling this road, the road of God, it will be accomplished. This message makes us reflect on our present and gives us the strength to face it with courage and hope , in the company of Mary, who always walks with us.

Sunday greetings.

Before bidding everyone farewell , the Pope recalled the end of the Year of Faith and announced an unusual initiative: "I would now recommend to all of you here in the square a medicine : some people think that the Pope is trying to be a pharmacist ... It is a special medicine to realize the fruits of the Year of Faith, which is drawing to a close. Its a medicine of 59 beaded grains : it is a spiritual medicine called Misericordina . It is kept in a box , which some volunteers will distribute as you leave the square. Take it : it is a Rosary , with which you can pray the 'chaplet of Divine Mercy ' , pearl of our soul and spiritual help to spread love , forgiveness and brotherhood everywhere. Do not forget to take it, because it does us good: the heart, the soul, our whole life!

His assertion that “the best decoration for an editorial room is a picture of the evangelists” serves as a sharp reminder to those directly involved that they are each called to evangelize. Notably, the symbols of the four gospel writers could well be seen as signifying the four professionals involved in the presentation of the printed word: ST MATTHEW: Winged Man - Incarnation. ST MARK: Winged Lion Resurrection. ST LUKE: Winged Ox Passion. ST JOHN: Eagle - Ascension.

Undeniably, Alberione’s vision for a truly salubrious use of the print medium is of prime importance in today’s times.

Brevity, the essence of communication In a world of speed when the common man is racing against time to make ends meet and simultaneously keep abreast of what can enrich his spirit, there is what is called an economy of words that needs to be maintained by those in the publishing-printing apostolate. Communicating briefly yet fully is of prime importance. We’ve often heard it said that if you can say in a page (or a paragraph) all that you have to, don’t write two pages or paragraphs; if you can say it all in a sentence, don’t write a paragraph; and if it can be said in a word, don’t write a sentence! That is where ‘editing’ comes into play.

Publishing per se involves specialized strategy. Broadly, the first step is the INCARNATION where the author conceives and fructifies his/her idea in book form. The next step is the RESUR-

World Communications Day was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual ... guide those who tell the story of our times through word and image.

RECTION where the evaluator of the manuscript (MS), as far as possible competent in the subject being dealt with, makes a serious study of the work in hand, adjudging it as either fit or unfit for publication, conscious of the fact that the published work is going to be a means of communicating the Word.

Then follows the PASSION involved in ‘Copy-editing’ – a task that is time consuming and to which not everyone can claim to be equal! The Copy-editor is one who has a powerful command over the language and is able to effectively defend his/her editing of the script.

As Judith Butcher avers, “Copy-editors need not be experts on the subject of the work but must be able to interest themselves in it in order to try to put themselves in the position of the intended reader” – so much in keeping with the Pauline injunction “Whatever you do, put your heart into it” (Col 3:23a)! “The good copy-editor,” Butcher adds, “is an intelligent reader and a tactful and sensitive critic; someone who cares enough about perfection of detail to spend time checking small points of consistency in someone else’s work…..” Such perfection of detail cannot but involve knowing and understanding both the similarity of terms as well as the difference and their uses – e.g. aloneness and loneliness,

in hand, at hand, and on hand, ipso facto and de facto, must needs etc.

The fourth stage is ‘Proof-reading’. Simple yet as important a task as that of the Author, the Evaluator and the Copy-editor, ‘proof-reading’ may be likened to the ASCENSION. The evaluation and the copy-editing having been competently done by the respective professionals, the proof-reader dedicatedly checks the transcript to ascertain whether the hard copy is adequate ‘proof’ of the changes and corrections effected by the copy-editor, before it is sent on to the department/s concerned for further action, inconsistencies if any being brought promptly to the notice of the copy-editor for the purpose of clarification and necessary action.

The message matters Implicitly, the author needs to be taken into confidence from the very start and kept updated on the progress of the MS, the need for the kind of changes being made and the corrections involved. All this is clearly indicative of two very important elements, viz. cohesion and collaboration between the Evaluator, the Copy-editor, the Proofreader and the Author, any semblance of one-upmanship consigned to the dustbin where it rightly belongs, for at stake is nobody’s ego but the importance of the message the given text strives to convey and the interests of the reader, time being an important consideration. Needless to say, the author, the evaluator, the copy-editor and the proof-reader come through as evangelists in the apostolate of the communications’ media.

100 Years of Gloria Church, Byculla Over hundreds of parishioners, hundreds of well wishers from other parishes like myself and scores of nuns stepped away from their rituals last Sunday, November 10th, to take part in a groundbreaking new event. “Centenary Celebrations of Our Lady of Glory Church” Byculla.

The mass led by His Eminence, Oswald Cardinal Gracias and con celebrated by Bishop Felipe Neri from Goa, Bishop Agnelo, Bishop Bosco, Bishop Savio, Fr. Rocky and other priests was a solemn affair. The Cardinal focused on “Mary & Faith” in his homily.

The Cardinal blessed the grandly decorated statute of’ Our Lady Of Glory’after the mass, while the melodious choir rendered the rock and roll song from the movie “Sister Act”, which made my evening within the church.

The stage was brightly lit up just like a broadway set and the audience was informed about the state of repairs and the church history by Bishops Agnelo and Neri respectively.

The cardinal was at his jovial best and made light banter on stage.

The highlight of the cultural programme was the superb musical by local and youth from other parishes too. It was a spectacular one called “Black and White”. All the male performers were with their faces painted black and white while the gals were in their pretty flowery skirt and tops. It was the first time I witnessed a performance of this type and it made my evening within the ground. The entire show was of high standards and the audience loved it.

My sincere appreciation to Fr Rocky Banz, the Parish Priest and the entire team for the detailed and well planned event.

It was a first centenary celebration of a Church for me as well for all present except Bishop Neri as admitted.

Hope to see the more churches celebrate their centenary in this fashion.

Are We Indians Racist?

East Indians Need To Unite I was happy to read a news item in Hindustan Times of 11/11/13 titled "City East Indians set up forum to safeguard community's interests."

I, immediately contacted Mr. Oneil Kini of Kalina whether he was part of the Conclave in the news. He admitted he was not part of it. Mr. Oneil is doing excellent work with his ‘Mool East Indian Sanghatana’, which is registered with government and has a name for achieving OBC status for the East Indians. I attend its Annual meetings on invitation. I find that the big leaders are always absent and Oniel is doing 'hamaali work’ alone. He should not have ignored by the Conclave.

My point is that there are many such East Indians who are doing excellent work for the uplift of the community. If they had to come together they would achieve any great marvells. But the sad fact is that they are working individually and infact sometimes even against one one another. We need very badly some one to bring the leaders and organisations together in atleast one loose association. Specially as the Conclave held at Vile Parle by Mr. Alphy D'Souza and Alexander D'Souza and attended by Bishop John Roderigues would achieve the goals like a reserved seat for the East Indian Municipal Corprator in Mumbai, only with such

Kuku relates that it was harrowing to constantly have children and adults tease, taunt, pick , poke and peer at you from the corner of their eyes denying their own humanity as well as mine.

He also narrates that he was once challenged by a group of Delhi students to create a matrimonial advertisement for himself; and was subsequently explained that he was unmarriageable in the market due to his race and colour. He further stated that he was denied visas, apartments, entry to discos, kindness and courtesies.

I would further add that we Indians are also casteists. At the time of arranged marriages, investigations and talks are secretly conducted on whether he or she is first class, second class etc. Why such hypocrisy? Racism, casteism, genderism and any other forms of discrimination must be eliminated from our thoughts, words and actions. As the good word clarifies: “There is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free persons, between men and women, for you are all one in union with Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

Catholic ..?

Loving It..?

Prove It. Recently I encountered an embarrassing situation, where I was told to prove that we are Catholics and that too on a document. As I fumbled to prove that we are Catholics, but the thoughts stirred up my mind as why we do not have any document which proves that we are Catholic? Though I

tried to explain through our Baptism and marriage certificates, it was of no avail. It is nowhere written that I or any member of my family is Catholic. That means; we are just Christians? I met a few others, who had similar experiences. In the west, they clearly mention the word ‘Catholic’ in their parish and school letterheads.

What I am trying to say here is; as for Indian Catholic Church, what is the harm in mentioning that we are Catholic? We say the Apostles’ Creed mentioning “Holy Catholic Church” and our Pope leads the Catholic Church and we have so many organizations and conduct so many programmes to pride ourselves who we are. (Catholic and loving it- by Steve Ray) But when it comes to our Catholic parishes and schools, it is only mentioned “Our lady of Lourdes Church” or “St. Patrick’s Church”, but no ‘Catholic word included and similarly it is with our schools.

While there are so many breakaway groups from the church mushroom, but for the general public we are just Christians? Is it so?

Furthermore; today there are many primary and secondary schools in the suburbs of Mumbai, Mira road and Malwani and other states or places, run by Muslims and Hindus, bearing Christian names! And all the gullible public admit their children thinking it is a Catholic school. (They even get foreign funds) And when any bad reputation arises out of such business, we Catholics are targeted as whole ‘Christian’ community. Is there any example anywhere that any Catholics or Christians running a school in Islamic or Hindu deity’s name? We raise hue and cry when someone shows our faith in poor light in movies and media. But where all those voices gone when these rouge elements exploit our faith to make millions? Are not we supposed to react? What prevents us from being boldly distinguished as Catholics? I hope our religious leaders are well aware of this issue and they need to come up with necessary changes; to be made in today’s scenario, which is a requirement. Can we have a solution?

The Legality And Illegality Of It All!

by Ladislaus L D’Souza There’s jubilation over the recent Supreme Court order staying its earlier order for the demolition of some 35 illegal floors built in the Campa Cola Compound. And rightly so, for the demolition ordered stood to affect adversely a large number of families who were said to have bought the illegal dwellings legally and since paid all tax dues while the perpetrators of the criminality involved have all gone scot-free.

A close analysis of the entire case could open a Pandora’s box of questions, like: (1) Where was the Law/ government/municipality when the illegal constructions came up, whether in the case of Campa Cola Compound or in the case of the 50,000 buildings that reports say exist illegally in Mumbai? (2) There are other cities in Maharashtra and across the country where several such constructions have mushroomed and continue to do so. What has the Law/government/ municipality done about it or plan/s to do? (3) Were the constructions made of papier mache or cardboard that they sprung up overnight, unnoticed by the well-paid and heavily fed officials concerned, be these in the government, the municipality or among the Law fraternity? (4) One is happy that neither

the government (both state and Central) nor the municipality, was keen on going against the Supreme Court order for demolition. Very laudable!

However, how does one explain the subversion of the Supreme Court verdict in the Shah Bano case by the then Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress Government at the Centre? Hiding behind the premise that the two matters are different and cannot be mixed does not gel! It’s a question of abiding by the verdict/order of the Supreme law enforcer of a democratic country.

That having been said, could the Christian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India or any such Christian body bring together a group of Christians involved in the construction trade to discuss ways and means to prevent such nefarious activities and curb the mushrooming of illegal constructions and such other related matters? And while we are at it, could we also have a similar body formed to look into matters concerning the Conveyance Deed not having been obtained yet by Catholics living in certain dwellings built on land once owned by the Archdiocese and where residents in legally formed Cooperative housing societies [CHS] are brazenly rebuffed as being ‘tenants’, thereby necessitating unseemly court cases between CHS members and the Church?

Why Should We Christians, Especially Those In Delhi, Vote For The Aam Admi Party?

L

et me start by confessing that I am a 'Signed In' member of the ' Aam Admi Party ' and hence what I am saying below is colored by the Cap or Badge with the Broom symbol, that I am now wearing.The main question being asked by many, is to why a practicing Catholic like myself, change from being a regular Congress voter, to one who will now stop voting for the Congress and vote for AAP? Let me try and answer this question, which many of my friends have asked me recently.

Corruption, the Cancer effecting the Society: We as Christians are constantly reminded in our churches, that we should keep to the Commandments and as such lead an honest life. This is becoming more and more difficult for us do in India these days, while we are being slowly engulfed by corruption.

How can one be honest, when you have to bribe someone or the other regularly, to get even basic necessities of life? What do we say to our educated kids who do not want to take up any Government job, because it forces them to be corrupt? Why are most of our bright youngsters, opting to immigrate to foreign countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and USA? The Congress unfortunately over the decades has been unable to control rampant political corruption, which has spread now, even to the bottom rung of the administration in government departments. Many will say it is the fountainhead of rampant corruption. It is effecting all citizens who have to deal with any Governmental department, for obtaining each and every service that they are entitled to as citizens. A time has come when the prime concern of the common citizens, has become this corrosive aspect that effects their daily life. The ordinary people have become aware that that substantial amount of money, that should go towards looking after their day to day

needs of health, education, food, shelter etc., is being eaten away by some of the the corrupt middle men, government employees, crony capitalists, leave alone the politicians, who closely control all the above corrupt persons.

The only time the India Citizens, have a chance to bring in a change in the way they are governed, is when the same politicians approach them for their vote, once in 5 years. This is the time, when any one concerned with the sorry state of affairs in this Country, has to take the necessary action to ensure his or her vote does not go to waste.

Unfortunately, the alternate option that the common Citizens of India

Eric D'Sa have, when it comes to voting is limited. BJP which was in power earlier at the Center and is in power in the many States today, is presently the option.

As far as corruption is concerned, it is a case of the size of corruption that is being spoken about. Congress being much more corrupt than BJP, is the only defense being offered to the voter

by BJP. For the common citizens, the amounts of money being talked about are so big, that they cannot even be comprehended. The BJP has not done nothing when they were ruling at the Center in the past, nor now where they are ruling in the States, to do any thing to bring in effective anti- Corruption Laws. Even the smaller regional parties ruling in the states, are not doing anything to have effective Lokyuktas to control corruption in their states. They have not lacked much behind on the corruption scale. As a matter of fact many corrupt criminals who have cases registered against them, are party functionaries with political clout in most of the political parties. They have even been made Ministers in the Governments.

Political Party funding is now totally dependent on corruption and donations of black money by Crony Capitalists. No political party until now has been ready to open up it's books for proper audit and RTI queries. This has increased the nexus between the corrupt politicians, government servants and crony capitalists. The system sidelines any one trying to be honest.

Though AAP has put up all the party donations they have received to fight the Delhi Assembly elections on their website, both BJP and Congress are trying hard to discredit them, with a false charge that they have been receiving foreign unaccounted money. Hence, it has not taken long for this terrorism to spread to India, which in any case was born earlier due to a partition with Pakistan, based on the religious beliefs. Pakistan like most of the Muslim majority countries in the world, has become an Islamic country with very few rights for other religious persons. Fortunately for India, to a great extent due to the liberal Hindu, who for centuries had learned to live in peace not only with Muslims, but also with other minorities like Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains etc, Secularism took root as Government policy. This trend over the years got strengthened, as the Young Indian got educated and was exposed to the western liberal thinking.

Unfortunately, this Secular fabric is being threatened due to our continuos conflict with Pakistan over Kashmir, which has dragged the Communal Terrorism across the border into India.

At the same time BJP have come to a conclusion, that the only way they can get back into power, is to revive their Hindutva agenda and use it for minority bashing. Hence terrorism based on religion is being instigated by their party political activists. All talk about economic growth and poverty elimination is being over shadowed by arguments regarding Secularism Vs Communalism. Communities are being polarized based on religious beliefs. Need for Hindutva Terrorism to combat Islamic Terrorism, is being fed to the Citizens.

Meanwhile, Congress which starts playing vote bank politics just before elections, exposes itself of not being a Secular party, in the real sense. Congress keeps forgetting that to be Secular, the Government should not be seen to be religious.

This is a reason the minorities such as Christians, who will have to face the cross fire of the above fight, will have to find recourse of a new party such as the AAP, which is not communal in nature and is ready to take on Corruption and rabid Communalism.

Centrally Controlled Parties Vs Swaraj of AAP For a democracy to function well in a country, generally we need, two well spread and recognized national parties, to be available for the voter to choose from. This has not been available in India, once the Janta Party broke up into regional entities and BJP being born by the total support of Communal forces lead by RSS. The regional entities came to be totally controlled by different political families.

Besides the state based parties that came into prominence, also tended to be cast based. This is slowly eroding democratic principals and for more than two decades now, the Country has depended on coalitions to form a National Government. This has raised the political instability and constant shifting of political loyalties of politicians just too stay in power. Coalition compulsion has become an alibi, for allowing minor political parties to loot the Nation. Congress has lost the capacity of obtaining sufficient seats to form a Government at the Center by itself. The same holds true of BJP. Unfortunately, the Congress party has become a totally centralized monolithic party, controlled by a family. There is no inner party democracy at all. The Nehru - Gandhi family has totally dominated the party and now many of the sons and daughters of the other prominent Congress leaders of the past, are helping the Nehru - Gandhi family run the Congress party on a hierarchical firm hold. The GOI which it runs, is also centrally controlled. There is hardly a chance of the party producing a leader such as Barack Obama, to take over the Party and GOI. Hence, there is all round frustration about this feudal form of party, that Congress has turned into, especially within the educated youngsters, that India is producing these days in large numbers.

The national alternative unfortunately has turned out to be the BJP, which is being now openly controlled

by the communal RSS and it's affiliates.

It came into power for the first time by openly advocating Hindutva and building of the Ram Temple at Ayodya. In the process it brought down a mosque and generated a lot of religious hatred.

Once in power, they also ensured the GOI was centrally controlled, as done by the Congress. To a large extent the party continued with similar policies, slightly tweaked to look different from those of Congress.

This has sprung many regional or state based political parties, which have tried to fulfill the local needs of people in the concerned states and regions. unfortunately they have also turned into monolithic family controlled parties.

There is no inner party democracy.

Hence all candidates put up for election by the present nationalistic and regional/ state parties, are at the whim and fancy of their supreme leaders.

AAP is now the party that has promised to bring in inner party democracy and empowerment of the people by the concept of Swaraj. Political decentralization will be brought about by grass root community participation. Already for the Delhi Assembly elections, the registered party workers have chosen their own candidate for each of their 70 assembly seats. They have drawn separate manifesto for each of the Assembly constituency, so that their promises to the people of their constituency can be met. If by a miracle and financial support of secular and liberal Indians, AAP wins the Delhi Assembly elections, there is nothing to stop AAP from quickly spreading across the country, and people of this country join AAP in large numbers. It will not be difficult for them to find 545 top class Indians with impeccable credentials, who can ofer themselves to be elected to Indian Parliament.

The above gives a few of the reasons and there are many more, why all liberal and secular people in Delhi should vote for AAP and the rest like us who want a peaceful and prosperous nation, should financially support AAP, in whatever small way we can. There is an urgent need to shake up the corrupt political system starting from Delhi and if we the people do not take up this rare opportunity, only we will have to take the blame on our selves.

he mammoth monolith cross at St Andrew’s is so mounted that it towers up to both beckon and guide visitors.It was so positioned that in Bandra of old it couldbe seenfrom way down theroadas a beacon to all.

Today it standspartly hidden by treesin an eerie silence proclaiming God’s chosen way of salvation. It is seventeen feet high carved from a single block of stone engraved with 39 symbols from the Old and New Testament. It is definitely the largest monolith cross in Mumbai, however many fail toappreciate its history andsignificance in the hustle and bustle of today.

An expos’e was planned by” the Mission SONshineteam with a special veneration service on the feast of “The Exaltation of the Cross” in this “Year of Faith to bring alive the secrets of this treasureon 14 September.

On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (or Triumph of the Cross) we honor the Holy Cross by which Christ redeemed the world. The public veneration of the Cross of Christ originated in the fourth century, according to early accounts. The miraculous discovery of the Cross on September 14, 326, by Saint Helen, mother of Constantine, while she was on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, is the origin of the tradition of celebrating the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on this date. Emperor Constantine later built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the site of her discovery of the cross. On this same pilgrimage she ordered two other churches built: one in Bethlehem near the Grotto of the Nativity, the other on the Mount of the Ascension, near Jerusalem.

In the Western Church the feast came into prominence in the seventh century — after 629, when the Byzantine emperor Heraclius restored the Holy Cross to Jerusalem, after defeating the Persians who had stolen it. The feast slowly (Contd.. on p. 15)

Lawman warns of possible organized crime threat to pope Rome: Pope Francis could be at risk from the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime organization, according to a leading anti-mob prosecutor who has himself been the target of threats from the mafia.

Different Types Of Kitchen Knives And Their Uses I like watching cooking shows, I have notice one thing in common with the chefs they have a very good knife skills, Well, I guess it comes with the job. A chef should know which knife to use for a particular job, how to use the selected knife safely and efficiently and also how to maintain it.

Knives have many different purposes and have been designed accordingly in different shapes and sizes.

Here is a list of different types of knives and their uses. So open your kitchen drawer and see if you have these knives.

Paring knife - Every kitchen should have a paring knife. A multipurpose knife used for small jobs such as topping and tailing vegetables, removing skins from onions and preparing small fruits.

2. Smile.

Bring yourself in front of a mirror and force yourself to smile. It really does help change your mood and relieve stress. You also feel lighter and happy.

Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you're in need. When you’re stuck in a negative spiral, talk to people who can put things into perspective and won’t feed your negative thinking.

4. Change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive.

For example, instead of thinking "We are going to have a hard time adjusting to our living situation", replace that with "We will face some challenges in our living situation, but we will come up with solutions that we will both be happy with."

6. Help someone.

The new family in the neighbourhood overslept and their six-year-old daughter missed her school bus. Her father had to drive her. Since he did not know the way, he said that she would have to direct him to the school. They rode several blocks before she told him to turn left, several more before she indicated a right turn.

This went on for 20 minutes - left, right, right, left - but they finally reached the school. Then her father realised they were only five blocks from home.

Much annoyed, the father asked his daughter why she'd led him around in such a circle "That's the way the school bus goes, Daddy, It's the only way I know."

Take the focus away from you and do something nice for another person. It will take your mind off of things you will feel better for helping someone else.

7. Remember that no one is perfect and let yourself move forward.

It’s easy to dwell on your mistakes. The only thing you can do now is learn from your mistakes and move forward.

Watch your thoughts, they become words.

Watch your words, they become actions.

Watch your actions, they become habits.

Watch your habits, they become your character.

Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

any high school students feel that they need to have their whole lives planned out before graduation. That’s a lot of pressure to take on, and it really isn’t practical because your goals and desires change over time. At this point, the best way to prepare for the process of career planning is to take some steps to get to know more about yourself.

Start by considering your options. You can take many paths, and you may discover new talents and passions in the process of exploring. The quick exercises below can help lead you in the right direction.

1. Think About What You Love What classes have you found especially inspiring? What activities keep you so absorbed that you don't even notice how much time has passed?

Listing 10 things you love can help reveal possible paths.

Remember, even if you know someone who has been planning to be a doctor since the age of seven, most young people don’t know what they want to do or be. Mira Fest-2013 St. Joseph Church, Mira Road, had organized Mira Fest 2013 from Nov. 3 – 10, 2013, a eight day festival. The Fest was an evening of fun, excitement and participation. People from all walks of life participated with their family and friends for some “funspiration”. This was one of the largest eight day fest which was being organized in the city of Mumbai, visited by thousands. With an aim of fostering harmony and goodwill among people of all faiths. Various competitions such as Prince and Princess, King and Queen, Singing, Dancing, Mad Ads, Drawing, Fancy Dress etc., for different age groups gave a large platform for every single artist to showcase his/her talent.
