Viral Photo Shows Muslims Defending Catholic Church In Egypt
A viral photo showing Muslim men standing in front of a Catholic church in Egypt, protecting its congregants while they attend mass, serves as juxtaposition to recent reports indicating the growing attacks on Christians by Muslims in the North African country.

The photo, which has been circulated around the internet, shows over 20 Islamic men, wearing traditional Islamic dress, holding hands in a line in front of a large Catholic cathedral. The men are reportedly protecting the Catholic Church from vandalism and attacks while Christian congregants attend mass inside. The picture has gained a wide amount of media attention after it was tweeted by the Rev. James Martin, S.J., a Jesuit priest and the author and editor-at-large of America, a national Catholic magazine. Martin, who has 30,000 followers, tweeted the image, and it was then retweeted by his followers more than 600 times and made a "favorite" nearly 300 times. "Hope for return of compassion and dignity," one Twitter user commented on the photo, while another commented "our world needs more of this." Despite the image, many Twitter users remained skeptical of the situation in Egypt, arguing that Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been reported to have attacked dozens of other churches in recent weeks. "The peaceful actions of some do not cancel the violent actions of others," one user tweeted. Source: Christian Post

Discontent Brews Among India's Laity New Delhi: Anger is brewing among the Catholic laity in India, especially those of the Latin Rite. The fresh air that Pope Francis has brought to the Universal Church has fanned a ferment, born of increasing frustration over laypeople’s perception that bishops, both individually and collectively, have chosen not to respond to their various appeals over the years. They are now considering a direct appeal to the pope if the CBCI – the Catholic Bishops Conference of India - does not give them a fair hearing. This appeal was suggested at the annual general meeting of the 93-yearold All India Catholic Union (AICU) which concluded in Kolkata last week, and the two day session of the Laity Assembly that followed. It had been intended as an ambitious “Laity Synod” in the national capital. But the AICU was forced to change its name to “Laity Assembly,” in the face of objections from bishops who maintained that they alone had the canonical right to convene synods. The general consensus at the assembly seemed to point to a continuing, wide communication gap between the people and many of the bishops who govern the country’s 166 dioceses - 129 of them Latin, 29 Syro-Malabar and eight Syro-Malankara. There are brilliant examples of great collaboration between the faithful, bishops and clergy. But Catholic Union leaders feel that in many dioceses, even basic provisos of the Code of Canon Law have not been observed, on issues of transparency, governance and the participation of the people. They are particularly galled by the non-implementation of Canonical provisions on diocesan and parish finance committees; provisions which state that members should include people who have expertise in financial management. It is widely thought that clergy and hierarchy have been known to discourage participation by the laity, whom they see as potential troublemakers or a challenge to vested interests. Except on issues of faith and catechetical literacy, the formation and training of lay people is also seen as less than satisfactory. Yet this training is desperately required in India’s very diverse Church, with communities of tribals and Dalits and other sharp distinctions based on caste and mother tongue. The laity also feels aggrieved that the leadership keeps them at arms length in the management of institutions such as schools, colleges and other structures of diocesan administration. This lack of care is a major reason why Catholics in large numbers are leaving the Church and joining Pentecostal groups, a phenomenon that is also rampant elsewhere such as Latin America. The formal report of the Laity Assembly is expected to be published in October or November and there are clear hints that it will be all but an indictment of the Church leadership. It remains to be seen if the hierarchy will lend an ear to the call of the people, even if the leaders have heard the pope express similar feelings. This is what is meant by “Give us this day our daily bread.” The path that we take may not lead to the success we want but the achievement is in doing at each moment what my conscience tells me to do. Even in failure we are at peace in the knowledge that we did the Will of God. We have Hope that things will turn out right in the end because God is all knowing, all wise & almighty. With this approach we live a full life, there is never an idle moment. We look around, what am I supposed to do? What can I contribute in this situation? How can I relieve the stress & pain I see? How can I bring “Heaven on Earth”? The Our Father is a call to Action. Many are living a Hell on Earth. There is turbulence, turmoil at home, at work, in society. There is uncertainty, fear, jealousy, exploitation. What is God doing about it we may ask? God permits evil & suffering. As children of God we are His heirs, how do we keep His spirit alive? How do we build on what He has given us? How do we respond?
Do we forgive others for the evil they have done to us or do we seek revenge, war, conflict? Evil begets evil. Forgiveness “delivers us from evil”. Revenge, jealousy, fear, uncertainty “lead us into temptation”. Love is creative, creating newness, freshness, new life. When we forgive, when we love we have hope, we create a new path. We are all called to do everything in the name of God — Hallowed be Thy Name. We are God Men but with a difference — not bringing followers to ourselves, but aiming to bring the Kingdom of God on Earth. We are rich not by accumulating wealth but by bringing prosperity to all on a sustainable basis, by empowering every creature to live their life to the full, by having respect for everything in this universe. We see the beauty in all things. We turn disadvantage to advantage, suffering into joy. “Thy Will be Done” God is not a dictator whose orders must be followed because He says so. He is a loving father with a purpose for our long term happiness in whatever He asks us to do. There is a very strong cause and effect relationship in this universe. Nothing exists on its own. Everything is connected to everything else. He wants us to find this out by study, research and experimentation. Some mysteries are conveyed to us through revelations and sacred scriptures. We are asked to live by the Ten Commandments. The choices we make must be Knowledge Based, knowledge of what He wants. In the Information Age we have the power to research the past and draw scenarios of the future to understand the working of Nature & determine what is best, what is right and what is wrong and WHY. “Who art in Heaven” God is in heaven but He is also everywhere. He is on earth & hence, wants earth to be like Heaven. When we say “our Father” we remind ourselves that we are all one family. When we do good to others we please our Father & come closer to Him.

Church Loses Latest Court Battle Over 'Allah' Ban
Malaysia: A Catholic weekly newspaper in Malaysia this week lost its latest legal battle over the right to use the word 'Allah' for God in its local language edition. in a case that has sparked nationwide debate over which religion has exclusive rights to the word Allah, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal ruled unanimously that the government’s efforts to ban the use of the word in Christian publications will continue. The next hearing is scheduled for September 10. The case dates back to a dispute over the re-registration of the Herald’s publishing license, following criticism from the Home Ministry over political articles that appeared in its pages. In 2009, the local language edition receeived an injunction to cease publication. The Herald and the archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur successfully sued for the right to continue, but the government then lodged an appeal against the ruling, which stated that Muslims did not have exclusive ownership of the word Allah. The court ruling spurred acts of vandalism against Christian churches and death threats against the presiding judge in the case, Lau Been Lan. Also in 2009, the government seized shipments of local language Christian Bibles that contained the word Allah. An agreement signed in 2011 by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak enabled the impounded Bibles to be released. But prosecutors argue that the

agreement has no bearing on the Herald’s case because it does not specifically grant rights to the use of the word Allah. In the lead-up to national elections earlier this year, the issue became a referendum on religious identity in the country, with Muslims seeing the issue as an attack on Islam and Christians casting the dispute in terms of religious freedom. In a rare statement to the media, the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur addressed the war of words that has surrounded the Herald’s court case. “The Catholic Church is gravely concerned by the recent statements made by individuals and organizations with regard to the use of the word ‘Allah’, a matter which is pending at the Court of Appeal,” said Fr Jestus Pereira, chancellor of the archdiocese in the statement. “Many of these statements are stoking racial sentiments and creating religious tension in our country.”

State Intervention Sought To Get Kannada Bishops
Gulbarga: A group of Christians in Karnataka has sought the immediate intervention of state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to get Kannadiga bishops appointed in the dioceses in their state. Raphael Raj, General Secretary, All Karnataka Catholic Christians Kannada Association, told reporters in Gulbarga on Monday that such intervention is need to end the “religious exploitation” of Kannada Christians. According to him the exploitation of Kannada Christians had been going on unabated and efforts to put an end to it had failed. ??Time was ripe for political intervention to end the exploitation. Raj said that barring the Chikmagalur diocese, all the 13 other dioceses had non-Kannada bishops. He alleged that these bishops were acting against the interests of Kannada Christians. All the three dioceses of the Church of South India (CSI) were headed by non-Kannada bishops. Raj urged the chief minister to write a letter to Pope Francis and the Moderator of the CSI, Chennai, urging them to appoint only Kannada Christians as bishops of dioceses in Karnataka. He said that the indefinite dharna opposing the appointment of a Tamil bishop to the Karnataka Central Province by the CSI had been going on for the past two months. Complaining that Kannada Christians have been left in the lurch as they don’t have even reasonable political representation, Raj wanted the government to nominate a member of the Kannada Christians to the Legislative Assembly and Council. He said although the previous BJP government had earmarked Rs 50 crore for the development of Christians in 2012, only Rs 33 crore had been spent and the rest Rs 17 crore lapsed. For the current year, the allocation has been increased to 100 crore.

The Priest Shortage: Perhaps Not As New As We Thought
United States: It is a common notion that the number of priests has plummeted in this country [USA]. Many speak of the halcyon days when there were four and five priests per parish, and the seminaries were packed. And while some of these memories are accurate, they are drawn from a time in this country that was very brief. The fact is, the number of priests per parish spiked sharply after 1950 and has now leveled back to the levels of 1950 and before. Note the graph from the Center for Research in the Apostolate (CARA). It depicts the number of priests per parish. In 1950 there was an average of one priest per parish. Last year there was an average of one priest per parish. Welcome to 1950. Mark Gray, writing at the CARA blog says:

There was about one active diocesan priest per parish then as there is now. The late 1950s into the 1970s represent an exceptional period in American history when there were significantly more active diocesan priests available than there were parishes. Age and mortality has and continues to diminish the size of the diocesan clergy population. Although ordinations have remained stable for decades, these are not sufficient to make up for the number of priests lost each year to retirement or death. Frankly, even in the glory days, America did not produce the number of priests we need to fill our needs. Back in the 1950s through the 1970s a tremendous number of FBI (foreign born Irish) priests were enlisted to meet American needs. My own diocese had a large number of them brought in, beginning in the 1950s. Many ethnic groups in the Urban North also brought large numbers of priests to serve them from overseas. Today there are many dioceses that rely on Nigeria and other booming Catholic countries to supply extra priests. It is true, most American seminaries were bursting at the seams especially after World War II. But that boom would seem to be as short as it was impressive. Source: Archdiocese of Washington

In recognition of his contribution to literature, through his numerous books, Fr George Kaitholil, a member of the Society of St Paul and author of nearly 80 books and hundreds of articles on various topics, has been chosen to receive the Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England. Born in South India, Fr George did his secular and priestly studies in India, Italy and Germany. Cause Of Canonization For Father Aurelius Maschio, SDB Monday 9 September 2013 marks the 17th Death Anniversary of Father Aurelius Maschio of Matunga. Father Maschio was evidently a very holy priest and in the tradition of the Salesians of Don Bosco, a striking example of unfailing devotion to Our Lady, the Help of Christians. As Father Joseph Casti's book on him indicates, much of what he did or achieved in Bombay and elsewhere in India he unreservedly owes to her. Rich and incomparable are his achievements, revealing how marvellously God works with those who trust Him completely. Incidentally, whatever Father Maschio did has benefited not just Catholics but society as a whole, his allencompassing humaneness and his humanitarian works recognizing no discrimination in terms of caste, class, colour, creed, nationality and whatever. The Shrine of Mary Help of Christians is one of the most fascinating churches built in India of the 20th century. Built entirely with Malad stone and lined with Italian marble, it did not fail to delight even a pope! On entering it, Paul VI reportedly exclaimed: "It's like entering one of the Italian Basilicas!" The stained glass and the mosaic frescoes are rare treat to the eye of both Catholics and non-believers alike. Maschio had an aura of holiness that was edifying, a very saintly demeanour, the memory of which makes one wonder as to why he is not on the way to being included in the list of the Beati. If I'm not mistaken, its the ordinary of the diocese where an individual has had his saintly being that would normally be in a position to set the ball rolling by opening the cause as it were. Manori-gorai-uttan Belt – Destructive Plans Once again, the issue of the highly ambitious development of the ManoriGorai-Uttan belt to promote tourism has come into the limelight, with the Maharashtra Government approving the proposal (The Times of India dt.22.8.2013) and preparing to issue the special notification. Local organizations have rightly opposed the move – they have voiced their concern. Needless to say, this move of the government is bound to destroy this beautiful area. Earlier attempts of the government have failed and it is hoped once again, that good counsel will prevail and the ‘destructive plans’ of the government are consigned to the wastebins. On the other hand, it would make better sense for the government to de-
velop the urban city of Mumbai where infrastructure has collapsed under the weight of corruption, bribery, greed, etc – not a single road in this city is free of pot-holes (these are really craters), which have now started claiming the lives of motorists. The government would do well to direct their energies and public money towards cleaning up the system and make this city of Mumbai into a ‘habitable’ city. By the way, whatever happened to those highly ambitious, grandiose plans to turn Mumbai into Shanghai, Manhattan whatever ? What more can we say, except that, as it is often retorted, ‘let them make Mumbai in to MUMBAI First !’

Organ Donation This is with reference to the article ‘ Why we need to oppose organ donation’ by Dr. Leo Rebello (Secular Citizen, Aug.12). In the first place, Dr Leo Rebello needs no introduction as a highly reputed and respected doctor of Mumbai. However, it is shocking that as a Christian, he still holds on to the superstitious belief of ‘karma’ and its transmission to the recipient, after organ donation by the donor. It is also farfetched to compare organ donation to the loading of someone else’s SIM/ Memory card into one’s mobile. To donate one’s organs to save another’s life is the greatest form of charity. It is unfortunate that Dr Rebello’s views on organ donation conflict with the international movement on organ donation and transplant, and the recent ‘Organ donation day’ observed in the country, when thousands pledged to donate their organs after death to save precious life and those suffering from incurable diseases.

Testament. Since his target audience was Jews, he copiously quoted from these texts. Even his dying exclamation “Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani” was a direct quote from Psalm 22:1. So too, when he talked of division, he may have been quoting the Prophet Micah “For son insults father, daughter rebels against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law; a persons enemies come from within the household itself” (Mic 7:6). Mother Mary may also have told her son what the Prophet Simeon had said when he was being presented in the Temple on the 40th day of his birth. “Look he is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed, and a sword will pierce your soul too, so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare” (Lk 2:34-35). Earlier translations used the phrase “sign of contradiction”. I prefer to use the term “contra-indication”. incisively than any two edged sword: it can seek out the place where soul is divided from spirit, or joints from marrow; it can pass judgment on secret emotions and thoughts. No created thing is hidden from him; everything is uncovered and stretched fully open … “ (Heb 4:12-13). So we do see that Sacred Thread running through Sacred Scripture. The “offending text” can now be seen in its proper perspective. Jesus himself first experienced divisiveness, and forewarns his disciples. At the beginning of his ministry, when he stood up in the synagogue of his hometown Nazareth, to proclaim the fulfillment of the scriptures, he experienced his first reaction and angry rejection. “Everyone in the synagogue was enraged. They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff …” (Lk 4:28-30). That is why Jesus says, “You will be betrayed even by parents and brother, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. You will be hated universally on account of my name” (Lk 21:1618). He goes on to say “If the world hates you, you must realize that it hated me before it hated you” (Jn 15:18). Jesus prioritizes relationships when he says “No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter to me is worthy of me” (Mat 10:37). This was said when Jesus was commissioning his first set of disciples; much like a General addressing his cadets at a passing out parade, where they are exhorted to believe “Country first, family later”. Even in the case of his mother, he declined to give importance to the physical relationship of the womb that bore him or the breasts that suckled him. He raised it to a different level by saying that even more blessed is the one who hears the word of God and abides by it (cf Lk 11:28 & 8:20-21). The more we reflect on Jesus’ life and mission, the more do we understand his words. They may sound strident or impractical when seen in isolation, or out of context. But the complete picture, joined by the Sacred Thread, makes for what we now call Sacred
Scripture. I had earlier referred to Jesus’ evolving self-understanding of his mission. I am inclined to believe that he was more strident at the beginning of his ministry, but became more circumspect and equanimous towards the end. That is why in his final discourse to his disciples he prays to the father, “May they all be one, just as, Father, you are in me and I am in you, so that they also may be in us …” (Jn 17:21). His bequeathal to them is “Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give to you. A peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you” (Jn 14:27). Division is incidental to Jesus’ mission, but peace is central to it, beginning from the nativity proclamation itself - “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours” (Lk 2:14). At the beginning of his ministry Jesus had said “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword” (Mat 10:34). This statement continues in the same manner as the “offending text” in Luke. However, the day before his death Mathew quotes Jesus saying to Peter, “Put your sword back, for all who draw the sword, will die by the sword” (Mat 26:52), a sentiment echoed in the last book of the Bible (cf Rev 13:10). So all you people of goodwill, turn on the switch, and allow the current of God’s word to pass through your life. You will be transformed. You will be at Pole Position, and be able to say what St Paul said at the fag end of his life, “I have run the race to the finish, I have kept the faith” (2Tim 4:7). Want, as in relationship is more or less looking at the physical; wanting an attractive man or woman, someone who has money to run the house and the family, someone who can actually support you in future, can really give you good sex and the likes. This sometimes leaves women in a position where they accept men who just come their way. Pity, they say is the sweetest form of love. Actually, I don’t see any sense in that. How can you make a choice of a wife or husband based on that? It is too cheap. If you going out with someone and think the person doesn’t march the kind of husband or wife you intend marrying, why don’t you just forget about the person and ignore the fact that the person will probably change one day. In fact it is the worst mistake and harm you can ever do to yourself.

nd Mary said ‘Yes’- and that is how Jesus came to be born into this world. When the Angel of the Lord announced to Mary that she would conceive and bear a child, Mary said YES. She was to give birth to Jesus, who was to become the saviour of the world, to rid the world of sin; He was to become King – a King who would rule over our Hearts. Yes, it was Mary’s Yes that made all this possible. it is fitting therefore, that we honour this woman called Mary, on her Birthday on the 8th of September.

D'Souza We have several churches dedicated to Mary and very rightly given her titles like, Mary Help of Christians, Mother of Perpetual Succour, Mother of Perpetual Help, etc., etc. Mary as we know was a simple peasant woman, who brought up Jesus in a worthy manner. We are all aware of her concern for others – like the time when she hurried to her cousin Elizabeth on knowing that she had in old age conceived a child. And on the other occasion at the marriage feast at Cana when the hosts had run out of wine, it was her intervention that saved the day. Knowing fully well that Mary can also help us if we were to call on her, we go to the various shrines dedicated to Mary. There are several Marian devotions and we seem to know all the Novena prayers by heart, we know the several prayers to Mary, we know all the hymns in honour of Mary, all the Mysteries of the Rosary; we recite the prayers and sing unto Mary, with

full gusto – complete devotion to Mary ! What would one expect but that a little of what Mary did in her lifetime, would rub off on us; if only we were to follow Mary, this world would be better place to live in. But alas, there is ‘many a slip between the cup and the lip. ‘ So, what is the fallout of all these devotions to Mary ? Are we any the better for it ? Do we show our devotion to Mary only for our own selfish interests ? To show the world how well we know our prayers and sing hymns to Mary, full throated. Take part in the Rosaries in our sectors during the months of May & October. Then what next ? After singing hymns like, “Let us Mingle Together”, not even look at the person whom we despise. Maybe, we go around slandering
somebody’s name, spew venom on others. We can sow seeds of discord in society, why even in the family, ensuring that the family members fight with each other and ultimately split. Oh what joy it gives such people. We need to ask ourselves, is it befitting of us to become ‘followers of Mary ? What is this, if not ‘Hypocrisy at it’s Best ! Mother Mary’s birthday is round the corner. Are we ready for the celebration ? Rather, are we worthy of celebrating Mother Mary’s birthday ? Isn’t it like any other birthday in the family ? Don’t we make preparations for a birthday in the family ? So then, what about preparation for Mother Mary’s birthday ? Are we prepared – no, no, no, not the Birthday Cake or the Birthday candle, or the snacks or the drinks, or maybe booking a hall, caterers, etc. No, that’s not it. But of course, we have the novenas in preparation for Mother Mary’s birthday. So is that enough ? We need to be prepared from the inside. Little do we realize that Mary does not approve of our show of devotion. Of what use is that devotion of ours if it does not lead us into doing good to others ? – it’s only a sham. Needless to say, it’s time we stop this sort of behavior and become ‘True’ followers of Mary. Truly then, can we be worthy of celebrating the Birthday of Mary.

Bishops' Body Opposes Law On Church Properties
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Churches (APFC) has opposed the state government’s move to constitute a group of ministers to enact legislation on Church properties and educational institutes. In a letter to Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Aug 24, it asked the government to give due weight to the views of the APFC headed by archbishops and bishops as it legitimately represents the churches and Christian Community of the state. Individual Christians, even if they happen to be MLAs or holding any other high position, cannot claim to represent the Christian community, it said. Admitting there are some cases of illegal disposal and occupation of Church properties, the churches feel that the government must take effective measures to restore them back to the churches, the letter said. With regard to the irregular sales of the Church properties noticed in some places by some individual church members, the bishops and heads of churches feel that the existing courts could be approached by the
aggrieved members of the churches for redressal. But, in the pretext of these isolated irregularities committed by a few individuals, it is not justified on the part of the government to generalize and impose on the entire group of churches a public law bringing them all under a single body. This drastic measure will lead to curtailing the freedom of the churches and lead to the negation of their fundamental rights to own and manage their private properties, the letter said. The bishops/heads of the churches oppose imposing on them something that they never asked for, rather resisted vehemently when such attempts were made in the past by some state governments. APFC is a state level apex body and an umbrella organization of the mainline churches of various Christian denominations represented by the bishops or heads of churches in Andhra Pradesh.
