of institutions in association with the Thames Valley Summer School (TVSS), United Kingdom created a platform for the students to attend the prestigious TVSS English Summer School at Oundle and Sevenoaks. As a part of the program they stayed at some of the most prestigious English boarding schools with students from more than 30 nationalities. For the past 39 years, TVSS courses have been among the most consistent popular programs in UK and here was a life time opportunity for Ryanites to make the most of it. Under the able direction of Dr. A. F. Pinto, Chairman & Madam Grace Pinto, MD, Ryan Group, Ryan has always created opportunities for Ryanites at global forums. This was truly an international and eclectic experience for all the students to live in UK for 2 weeks with students from across the world. Ryanites attended English classes and participated in various excursion programs along with students from

and traditions. I am proud of my school for this excellent opportunity.” As part of the program the students also visited numerous historical destinations in London, Oxford, Canterbury, Brighton and Cambridge. Special guided tours were organised to the National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum, Oxford College, National Maritime Museum and Sea Life Centre. Various academic forums and discussions were held with the students about English art, history, poets, authors and cinema. Mst. Nihal Nair said “This was the most amazing learning experience I have ever had and I am grateful to my School, Ryan International for such a wonderful exposure to internationalism in school life.”

across the Globe. “Students from Russia, Spain, China and Italy were also a part of this study. The integral theme was to break international boundaries, integrate cultures and become proficient in the Universal language, English. This was one of the many initiatives we undertake to make each Ryanite a Global citizen,” said Mrs. Alice Vaz, who accompanied the students along with Mrs. Katherine James. Students prepared for the most prestigious Trinity College English speaking examination along with the other students. It was a proud moment for all when the results were declared as all the students passed out with flying colors. While sharing about this international experience, Mst. Ayush said, “I have never had so many good friends from so many different countries at the same time. I learnt so much from them about their culture, food

The Ivory Towers of India

T

he last few days the National news channels on television have seen so much of ani mated action that it shocked and galvanised even the most laid-back among the citizens into action! These good souls that nonchalantly dismiss the misdemeanours of our leaders until trouble knocks on their very doors, have now launched lengthy debates on the growing chasm that irreparably divides India into two! The rulers do not wish to bridge the gap while the ruled cannot reach out Vera Alvares to the other side! Public gatherings have turned into a mini parliament discussing what the elected representatives choose to turn a blind eye to-their own reluctance to go to the people. Those living in ivory towers of India have lost their appetite for the diet of grass roots! All that political apathy in public has armed the people with courage to question the high and mighty and their decisions. Nothing spectacular, just the absence of ground realties in government files. The people of this country wish to quiz their representatives on matters of grave importance to the welfare of the nation. In a Democratic, Socialist, Republic like India what makes it possible for the ivory towers of the politicians to exist next to the growing slums and tarpaulin sheds of the poor? Why are the politicians so cut off from ground reality that their cruel statements ridicule the people and rub salt on their wounds caused by runaway prices, food beyond their reach and unemployment? Why do those in governance ignore the facts about their failure, pointed out by the people of this country? What is worrisome to the nation watching their Netas is the swift angry reaction of those on television panels when they face the citizens. They flare up, unable to face the truth that is in direct contrast to what they intend to project- a rosy picture of the land of Utopia! Do they expect the common man to believe and be content with the inane statistics and reports by the scores of commissions appointed by them? Blaming the media for all their ills is the latest fashion! It is painful to the viewer when the denial mode manifests in raised voices and shouting matches that drown any opposing view. From the ground it looks that cushioned by the perks they dole out for themselves, these people refuse to come down from their ivory towers and get their feet dirty in the muck of the citizens’ problems! The questions being asked by the people on the streets, the vegetable (Contd.. on p. 6)

he gospels do not mention the parents of Our Lady and, so, not much is known about them. But the Proto-Gospel of Saint James, dating back to the middle of the second century, names them as Anna—or Hannah which means “grace”—and Joachim, denoting “Yahweh saves”, and declares that their daughter Mary was born in answer to fervent prayer after a long childless marriage.

decision making, her steadfastness in the face of crises, her practice of continuous prayer, her devotion to the laws of her Jewish faith, her concern for others are all indicative of the closeknit, loving and God-fearing family upbringing she had had—undeniably, an upbringing that facilitated her “fiat”, setting in motion God’s plan of Salvation for all humankind.

A salubrious change - Initially, 26 July marked the feast of Saint Anne alone, celebrating “Mother’s Day”, until it came to be observed as Parents’ Day by the Church, celebrating the feast of Saints Anne and Joachim as patrons of all Catholic parents, and with good reason too. Today more than ever, given the testing times Christian marriage and the family are going through, this feast, on the one hand, reminds parents and grandparents of their responsibility to keep alive the practice of traditional human values as a promise of hope for future generations; on the other, it reminds the young that the greater perspective of the old, their depth of experience and understanding of life’s profound rhythms are all part of wisdom not to be ignored or even taken for granted. Sadly, however, though over the years, our parishes have been celebrating the feast in various ways, the em-

phasis given to that day is no match for that given to Mother’s Day (May) and Father’s Day (June), be it on the social circuit or in Church circles. Special cards and gifts marking Mother’s Day and Father’s Day flood the market, Celebrants at Mass as well as Catholic periodicals dwelling at length on the virtues of a good father and a good mother. We have Catholic-run publishing houses, presses and book-centres across the country bringing out greeting cards for all occasions, and gala Christmas-card sales organized for charity in our parish-church compounds; but not a single greeting card celebrating Parents’ Day is available even in Catholic-run stores or parish book-stalls!

Christian Marriage - Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who “is love,” the Father “from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” That is the Christian perspective on marriage as outlined in Humanae Vitae 8 (1968). And yet, with each passing year, mixed marriages – many of which do not conform to the Church’s viewpoint have begun to emerge more as the norm rather than an exception. Saint Paul exhorts children thus: “Honour your father and mother..... so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth” [Ephesians 6:2-3]. But how can the modern child really ‘honour’ his/her parents when single parenthood continues gaining ground even as live-in relationships that obviously exclude responsible parenthood not merely continue to thrive but are being increasingly glorified, the parties concerned least bothered about what the dictionary terms the progeny in such relationships? Further, with government notifications ensuring that a live-in partner is to be treated on par with the wife, courts affirming that sexual relations maketh a couple husband and wife and, worse, certain families consciously encouraging their married children/siblings/friends in their extramarital affairs, the twin institution of marriage and the family is clearly under serious threat.

Initially, 26 July marked the feast of Saint Anne alone, celebrating “Mother’s Day”, until it came to be observed as Parents’ Day by the Church, celebrating the feast of Saints Anne and Joachim as patrons of all Catholic parents, and with good reason too. As responsible human persons and as baptized members of the Mystical Body of Christ, both as individuals and as a community, what is our response?

A possible solution - The Church, both in India and universally, must needs get into top gear on the issue. And so I suggest that every diocese – 1. Have a Parish-church dedicated to Saints Anne AND Joachim. In fact, practically every diocese is known to have a Church dedicated to Saint Anne [Bombay has two, one at Mazgon and the other at Bandra], but none to Saint Joachim. In every diocese we have parish units striving to build new churches subsequent to becoming fullfledged parishes, as also parishes working towards rebuilding theirs on account of wear-and-tare or lack of space, each dedicated to some saint or other. At least one of these could be dedicated to the patrons of our parents. If that’s not possible, a parish-church named after Saint Anne could well be re-dedicated to Saints Anne and Joachim. 2. Obtain from the Vatican the privilege of a special indulgence for parents visiting such a church as a married couple annually [or at least once in their lifetime] to place their marriage and family under the patronage of Saints

Anne and Joachim. Here, it would be pertinent to bear in mind that, though nothing much may be known about these holy individuals, to them goes the credit of giving their only child an upbringing that made her “fiat” possible, thus setting into motion God’s plan of salvation for all humankind. 3. Dissociate itself from the observance of both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, discouraging parishes and clergy from even making mention of the day’s observance. Instead, make appropriate use Parents’ Day to expostulate on the virtues of a good father and mother. 4. Have seminars/rallies organized at diocesan/deanery/parish level/s throughout the month of July on topics such as CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE & THE FAMILY, CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE & CHRISTIAN PARENTHOOD, CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE & SOCIETY, PLANNED PARENTHOOD, THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY & SOCIAL ETHICS and so on. In conclusion, it may be pointed out that the above recommendations in no way purport to be a panacea for all ills concerning marriage and the family. But there’s no gainsaying the fact that the message the consideration given to those recommendations sends out is a highly positive one.

(Contd.. from p. 3) vendor, the peon in the school, the sweeper in the hospital, the carpenter, the cart-puller and others are an indication that the people have been pushed too far, with their backs against the wall. There is sorrow, misery. Since there is no way the rulers are interested in hearing these voices of anguish and pain, they presume things are rolling on welloiled wheels. Beneath the deafening silence of the lambs lies the inferno threatening to devour the very foundations of this nation. The country under the present regime has seen scams of great magnitude that siphoned off money that could have eased the problems of the poor, provided better jobs, medical facilities, housing and education. But either the law courts are dragging their feet or the ‘caged parrot’ is singing its master’s tune or simply speaking, might bought with ill-gotten wealth is proving to be right! What happened to fair play- ‘what

is food for the gander is food for the goose’ law of equality? The common man can now see through the ‘political conspiracy’ the glib excuse of the corrupt, to understand the devious designs that ensure the growing clout of the same set of political dynasties and clans. The masses of India deliberately confined to dark compartments of illiteracy, gender disparity, casteism and ‘traditions’ are content with the occasional crumbs thrown at them. A dual system of justice and governance flourishing under the patronage of those in power defiantly keeps the dominant section in society happy. While the rich are content manipulating the chessmen on the governance board the poor are too busy eking out an existence even to care. That leaves none to question the ridiculous presumptions according to which the co-ordinates of governance are calculated. The bleeding continues but the sufferings have become a way of life!

Can the circumstances in France when queen Marie Antoinette uttered those arrogant and offensive words, “If there is no bread let them eat cake! “be likened to the condition of present India where those in power show their utter disdain for the citizens with words such as, “ let them eat with one rupee… let them eat what they want…” or five rupees or twelve rupees or “ it’s no concern of mine!!” A famous philosopher stated that revolutions are born when the people of a country can stand the exploitation no longer…how long before India’s poor issue a wake-up call? How did this happen? There used to be a fake theatrical humility when Netas with folded hands and Gandhi topis used to magnanimously declare that they are ‘public servants’. How did they become Rajas? Since when have the elected representatives assumed that India is their personal fiefdom and the people their slaves? Is there an end to the aspirations of those self-serving leaders that hanker to remain in power despite illness and fading faculties? There are no answers.

Cardinal Simon Pimenta. R.I.P. Cardinal Simon Pimenta always treasured his childhood memories. On one occasion, he was invited to inaugurate a Community Center behind the St.John The Evangelist Church compound. The speaker mentioned that, although the Cardinal was born and bred in Marol, he might not be familiar with the new Center. The Cardinal jocularly retorted ‘I might not be familiar with the Center. However, i would like to remind you that, as a young boy, i spent my childhood here in Marol. I still remember climbing the mango trees that existed in this verdant jungle’. He then went on to deliver a stirring discourse on ‘The Inner Man’ whom we so often tend to ignore. On another occasion, Cardinal Pimenta was delivering a sermon in the Church. Incidentally, the Church is noted for the stray dogs wandering around, blissfully ignoring the Divine Presence. A stray dog entered and settled down before the lectern. Cardinal Pimenta jokingly rose to the occasion, and said, ‘I feel like St. Francis of Assisi. Even the dogs come to listen to my sermon! R.I.P. Cardinal Pimenta. Thank you for the memories!

raking up past history with frivolous and misleading views that could trigger communal discord in Goan society. It is also incorrect to state that Saivism and Vaishnavism do not relate to Hinduism . Both are cults of Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu respectively and have been in existence for centuries. Finally, why do need to develop a theology of the colonial past when we already have painful reminders of the Inquisition and its ‘acts of faith’ for which the church has apologized several times in the past and which is now past history to be forgotten. Let us confine ourselves to our holy scriptures only if we need to revive and deepen the faith of the faithful

No Challenge to Goan Christians This is with reference to the news item ‘Challenges of being a Goan Christian discussed’ ( Secular Citizen July 8). In the first place, it is surprising that such a topic should have been chosen for a seminar organized by the Jesuit fathers at the Rachol seminary to deepen the faith of the laity, especially in the year of faith. Christians and Hindus in Goa have been living In communal harmony with people of other faiths without any challenges for years together, unlike other states in the country which are often plagued and ravaged by communal disturbances leading to violence and killings. It is therefore felt that no useful purpose was served by holding the seminar and

Try the Beroean Way ‘Where has all our courage gone?’ – July 8, 2013

Sincere Congratulations to the writer for his incisive speech at the Laity Consultation, Mumbai. Jesus Christ accomplished His Mission among the Jews. Thereafter, He Commissioned His Apostles to preach the Good News to Jerusalem, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8). When the Apostle Paul went abroad to the Gentiles, they had never heard about Jesus and the Jewish laws. Paul and Silas therefore, took the help of the noble minded Beroean Jews to assist them in their mission. ‘The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea,

[and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men. (Acts 17:10 -12). Vatican II has made an about turn from about two centuries of church centered religiosity, and formed Small Christian Communities to encourage the laity to move out into the world. The Bible is based on an agro economy. Vineyards, sheep, pastures, fig trees, etc. Today, we are living in an urban economy. In the past 28 years (1984) since SCCs were introduced in the Parishes, we have about 67952 SCCs among 4447 parishes in 132 Dioceses (Examiner Editorial -24/08/2012). As correctly mentioned, Fear and Courage are two sides of the same coin. The Bible mentions the courage of Elijah who challenged the priests of Baal (I Kings (8:18 -46) and ran for his life (1 Kings 19: 1 -15.). Today, the scenario has changed and the lone whistle blower is imperiled. Although Vatican II stressed the involvement of the laity in socio- eco – political involvement, the SCCs continue to be grounded in church centric religiosity. The Civic and Political cells (CPCs) are either cosmetic or Fixed Deposit vote banks for the political parties. Some time back, at an Easter service, the parishioners of a leading parish were thrilled to note that a member had been nominated to the apex Council of Ministers of a leading political party. The joy was, however, short lived as parishioners of other political parties strongly protested against the announcement. All parishioners should unite on economic issues. ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’ (Galatians 3:28). Virtually all parishes comprise of Goans, East Indians, Mangloreans, and South Indians (GEMS). Every parish successfully organizes events by the

7

dominant group. Other Minority groups also have divisions. Yet when it comes to the national arena, all communities unitedly claim their rights. Recently, the CBCI allegedly supported the demands of a Minority group. Sadly, the Minorities’ Commissions have been taken over by other communities. We should sincerely strategize our approach. Our main bastion is Education. We have renowned academicians who should be supported. With due respect, I would like to mention Dr. (Ms.) Adelaide Vaz, Principal, St. Xavier’s Institute of Education. Dr. Vaz was on the Steering Committee for Education in the 12th Five Year Plan. Likewise, Committees headed by prominent citizens like Julio Ribeiro, George Menezes, Chottebhai, John Dayal, Dolphy D’souza etc. should be formed, and they should be given carte blanche in Corruption Combat and Laity issues. Monthly meetings should invite suggestions from parishioners, which can be collated and processed by the PPCs. —Denis Khan

Prudent Inculturation This is with reference to the article ‘Prudent Inculturation , always expectable to the church’ by Fr Calistus Fernandes (Secular Citizen, July 22), in reply to my letter‘ ‘Dangers of Inculturation’. Fr Calistus is right when he says that “inculturation is not wearing a dhoti , or using a bullock cart, but more than that”. Yet, Fr Calistus is in favour of seeing Mother Mary (Our Lady) dressed up as a tribal woman in sari with an Indian face. Our bishops according to him also need to do away with their mitre, staff and vestments and replaced with Indian attire to “free them from the clutches of the Roman empire” and make them appear unlike “jokers”. Is this Fr calistus’ idea of “ Prudent Inculturation? Probably it would be more appreciated to see our bishops dressed up in shepherd’s attire as shepherds of the church. —A. F. Nazareth, Goa.

Appeal For Uttarakhand Relief

Good Samaritans, rise to the occ asion, for those in distress in Uttarakhand are crying out to you. Both the print and electronic media have vividly captured the extent of devastation and destruction. Now that the emergency has passed and the army has withdrawn, so have the TV crews. The real work starts now. Not every one of us can go to Uttarakhand to lend a helping hand. Many are also wary of putting their hard earned money in the hands of Govt agencies; for fear that their contributions may not reach the intended beneficiaries. There is always a third alternative. The Garhwal Hills of Uttarakhand, that bore the brunt of nature’s wrath, are covered by the Diocese of Bijnor, which has its headquarters in Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal district. I had the opportunity to visit several mission stations in that diocese when it was in its infancy, over 30 years ago. The diocese is run by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation and headed by Bp John Vadakkel CMI. The diocese is routing its relief efforts through its Karuna Social Service Society, led by Rev Pious Philip. He has informed me that so far they have ministered to over 2000 families with food packets, tarpaulins, bedding and even solar lights, as electric supply to most of the region has been disrupted. The priests and nuns sometimes walk 15-20 kms per day to render

assistance and medical relief. Teams from Caritas and Catholic Relief Services have also reached there. It is estimated that rehabilitation will take atleast 3 to 4 years. However, the immediate concern is medical relief and daily sustenance. The missionary schools and church premises in Joshimath, Uttarkashi, Srinagar Garhwal and Chinnyialisaur have been converted into shelter camps for the homeless. Some of the refugees have nothing but the clothes on their backs. The relief and rehabilitation work is indeed a Himalayan task, no pun intended. Bp Vadakkel has appealed to the Good Samaritans in the community to generously assist in the relief and rehabilitation effort. Contributions may please be sent by cheque/ bank draft favouring KARUNA SOCIAL SERVICE SOCIETY and posted to Rev Pious Philip, Karuna Social Service Society, Balasaur, Kotdwar, Uttarakhand – 246149 (Phone No 01382 – 227029). Those with core banking facilities may deposit their cheques/ cash in the aforementioned name in A/c No 2181101003870, Canara Bank, Kotdwar Branch, IFSC Code: CNRB0002181. Salute To All Parsis .....

N

o Indian community internal ized the civilizing mission of the ancient Hindu culture as did the Parsis. Only 50,000 remain in Bombay (Now" MUMBAI) today, mainly in South Mumbai, the most disciplined and cultured part of India . In South Mumbai, the cutting of lanes by drivers is punished, jumping a red light is impossible, parking is possible only in allotted area, roads are clean, service is efficient, the restaurants are unmatched -civilization seems within reach. South Mumbai has some of the finest buildings in India, many of them built by Parsis. The Parsis came to Mumbai after Surat's port silted over in the 17th century. Gerald Aungier settled Mumbai and gave Parsis land for their Tower of Silence on Malabar Hill in 1672. The Parsis made millions through the early and mid-1800s and they spent much of it on public good. The Parsis, on the other hand, understood that philanthropy - love of mankind -recognizes that we cannot progress alone. That there is such a thing as the common good. They spent as no Indian community had ever before, on building institutions, making them stand out in a culture whose talent lies in renaming things other people built. The Parsis built libraries all over India , they built the National Gallery of Art. The Indian Institute of Science was built in 1911 by Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was built by Dr Homi Bhabha, the Tata Institute of Social Science was built in 1936 by theSir Dorabji Tata Trust. The Wadias built hospitals, women's colleges and the five great low-income Parsi colonies of Bombay . JJ Hospital and Grant Medical College were founded by Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy. By 1924, two out of five Indians whether Hindu, Muslim or Parsi - joining the Indian Civil Services were on TATA scholarships. They gave Mumbai the Jehangir Art Gallery, Sir JJ School of Art , the Taraporevala Aquarium. The National

Center for Performing Arts, the only place in India where world-class classical concerts are held is a gift of the Tatas. There are 161 Friends of the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) 92 of them are Parsis. For an annual fee of Rs 10,000, Friends of the SOI get two tickets to any one recital in the season, they get to shake hands with artistes after the concert, and they get to attend music appreciation talks through the year. The Parsi dominates high culture in Mumbai. This means that a concert experience in the city is unlike that in any other part of India . Classical concerts seat as many as two thousand. Zubin Mehta, the most famous Parsi in the world, is Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since 1969. He conducts the tenor Placido Domingo, the pianist Daniel Barenboim and the soprano Barbara Frittoli. Four concerts are held at the Jamshed Bhabha Opera House and then one at Brabourne Stadium with a capacity of 25,000. No other city in India has this appetite for classical music and in Mumbai this comes from the Parsis. Despite their tiny population, the Parsi presence in a concert hall is above 50 per cent. And they all come. Gorgeous Parsi girls in formal clothes - saris, gowns children, men and the old. Many have to be helped to their seats. Most of them know the music. Symphony Orchestra of India concerts begin at 7 pm. Once the musicians start, latecomers must wait outside till the movement ends. The end of each movement also signals a fusillade of coughs and groans, held back by doddering Parsis too polite to make a sound while Mendelssohn is being played. No mobile phone ever goes off as is common in cinema halls: his neighbors are aware of the Parsi's insistence of form and his temper. The Parsis were also pioneers of Mumbai's Gujarati theatre, which remains the most popular form of live entertainment in Mumbai. Any week of the year will see at least a half dozen bedroom comedies, murder mysteries, love stories and plays on assorted

themes on stage. The Parsis were the pioneers of this, writing and acting in the firstplays of Mumbai. They also built the institutions that supported this. Mumbai's first theatre was opened by Parsis in 1846, the Grant Road Theatre, donations from Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy and Framjee Cowasjee making it possible. Want to add about the generosity about Ratan Tata who did so much for the staff of Taj Hotel during the terrorist attack in Mumbai. Not only that but he also set up camps for all the other victims and their families who suffered during the attack at Bori Bunder and elsewhere. The Parsi in Bollywood caricature is a comic figure, but always honest, and innocent as Indians believe Parsis generally to be, rightly or wrongly. In the days before modern cars came to India the words 'Parsi-owned' were guaranteed to ensure that a second-hand car listed for sale would get picked up ahead of any others. This is because people are aware of how carefully the Parsi keeps his things. His understanding and enthusiasm of the mechanical separates him from the rest. Most of the automobile magazines in India are owned and edited by Parsis. The Parsis are a dying community and this means that more Parsis die each year than are born. As the Parsis leave, South Mumbai will become like the rest of Mumbai -brutish, undisciplined and filthy. You are privileged if you have a Parsi Bawa as your friend...He/She is indeed a "Heritage" to be treasured for ever.

Pope Francis Draws 3M to Rio Vigil RIO DE JANEIRO – Pope Francis drew a reported 3 million flag-waving, rosarytoting faithful to Rio's Copacabana beach on Saturday for the final evening of World Youth Day, hours after he chastised the Brazilian church for failing to stem the "exodus" of Catholics to evangelical congregations. Francis headed into the final hours of his first international trip riding a remarkable wave of popularity: By the time his open-sided car reached the stage for the vigil service Saturday night, the back seat was piled high with soccer jerseys, flags and flowers tossed to him by adoring pilgrims lining the beachfront route. "I'm trembling, look how good you can see him!" gushed Fiorella Dias, a 16-year-old Brazilian who jumped for joy as she reviewed the video she shot as the pope passed by. "I have got to call my mother!" On the beach, pilgrims staked out their spots on the sand, lounged and snacked, preparing for an allnight slumber party ahead of the final Mass on Sunday. Many of those actually paying attention to the vigil had tears in their eyes, moved by Francis' call for them to build up their church like his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, was called to do. "Jesus offers us something bigger than the World Cup!" Francis said, drawing cheers from the crowd in this soccer-mad nation. The vigil capped a busy day for the pope in which he drove home a message he has emphasized throughout the week in speeches, homilies and off-the-cuff remarks: the need for Catholics, lay and religious, to shake up the status quo, get out of their stuffy sacristies and reach the faithful on the margins of society or risk losing them to rival churches. In the longest and most important speech of his four-month pontificate, Francis took a direct swipe at the

August 5, 2013

"intellectual" message of the church that so characterized the pontificate of his predecessor, Benedict XVI. Speaking to Brazil's bishops, he said ordinary Catholics simply don't understand such lofty ideas and need to hear the simpler message of love, forgiveness and mercy that is at the core of the Catholic faith. "At times we lose people because they don't understand what we are saying, because we have forgotten the language of simplicity and import an intellectualism foreign to our people," he said. "Without the grammar of simplicity, the church loses the very conditions which make it possible to fish for God in the deep waters of his mystery." In a speech outlining the kind of church he wants, Francis asked bishops to reflect on why hundreds of thousands of Catholics have left the church for Protestant and Pentecostal congregations that have grown exponentially in recent decades in Brazil, particularly in its slums or favelas, where their charismatic message and nuts-and-bolts advice is welcome by the poor. According to census data, the number of Catholics in Brazil dipped from 125 million in 2000 to 123 million in 2010, with the church's share of the total population dropping from 74 percent to 65 percent. During the same time period, the number of evangelical Protestants and Pentecostals skyrocketed from 26 million to 42 million, increasing from 15 percent to 22 percent

of the population in 2010. Francis offered a breathtakingly blunt list of explanations for the "exodus." "Perhaps the church appeared too weak, perhaps too distant from their needs, perhaps too poor to respond to their concerns, perhaps too cold, perhaps too caught up with itself, perhaps a prisoner of its own rigid formulas," he said. "Perhaps the world seems to have made the church a relic of the past, unfit for new questions. Perhaps the church could speak to people in their infancy but not to those come of age." Francis asked if the church today can still "warm the hearts" of its faithful with priests who take time to listen to their problems and remain close to them. "We need a church capable of rediscovering the maternal womb of mercy," he said. "Without mercy, we have little chance nowadays of becoming part of a world of `wounded' persons in need of understanding, forgiveness and love." Despite Francis' critical assessment of the sorry state of the church in Brazil, the pope's reception in Rio has shown that he can draw quite a crowd. Copacabana beach's 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of white sand was overflowing for the final vigil Saturday night, thanks also to Mother Nature which finally cooperated with chilly but dry temperatures after days of rain. Local media, citing information from the mayor's office, said 3 million people were on hand for the vigil; calls to the mayor's office weren't immediately returned. That's far higher than the 1 million at the last World Youth Day vigil in Madrid in 2011, and far more than the 650,000 at Toronto's 2002 vigil. Rio's mayor had estimated earlier in the day that as many as 3 million (Contd.. on p. 16)

Solomon God Was Pleased With His Prayer for Wisdom

was so pleased, in fact that he also promised to grant wealth and honor to his servant Solomon. As we read on in the books of Kings and Chronicles, we see that it was precisely through Solomon’s divinely given wisdom that he received riches and glory.

als. While the exact location of Sheba is disputed, the best guess places it at approximately the same area as modern Yemen. This identification means that the queen traveled about 1,400 miles to meet Solomon in Jerusalem. Solomon was known for more than his wisdom, because he sought first the Kingdom of God, God gave him many other blessings. Solomon’s riches and glory were known far beyond his kingdom. When the queen of Sheba came to test Solomon’s wisdom she was impressed by the house he had built, the food on his table and the organization of his officials and his servants. God had generously provided all of Solomon’s needs and then some. We don’t know the contents of the discussion between the queen and Solomon, but we know that the queen was amazed by Solomon’s wisdom and wealth. Solomon’s wisdom caused this gentile queen to praise God. “Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel.” (1Kings10:9). She also increased Solomon’s wealth by giving him an abundance of gold and spices.

Solomon-His Wisdom Amazed the World.

Solomon- He Taught God’s People to be Wise

he name (Solomon in Hebrew means peace), the third and the last king of united Israel. When he was born, the Lord loved him and the child was also called Jedidiah, “ beloved of the Lord ” (2Sam.12:24-25). He was the second son of King David and Bathsheba, the former wife of Uriah the Hittite. He did not enter into the history of Israel until in David’s advanced old age, when a conspiracy attempted to make Adonijah the son of David and Haggith king. Solomon had to deal harshly with Adonijah and his followers when they continued to plot against him.

Solomon-God Granted Him Wisdom. At the beginning of his reign Solomon trusted and loved God, following in the steps of his father David. Soon after he became king and before he built the first Temple on Mount Moriah, (Jerusalem) Solomon journeyed to Gibeon , about seven miles northwest of Jerusalem to seek the Lord’s will. While the Ark of the Covenant was in Jerusalem at this time, the bronze altar and tabernacle were located in Gibeon. Solomon worshiped the Lord by offering a thousand burnt offerings on the altar. That night, while Solomon slept near the altar, God appeared to him in a dream and made an incredible proposal: “Ask what you would like me to give you.”(1King3:5). Imagine and Creator of the universe volunteered to give anything to the king. Solomon could have asked for unimaginable wealth or unbeatable power. Instead, Solomon requested wisdom. He apparently recognized the tremendous responsibility involved in ruling God’s people, and he was aware of his own inadequacy. Accordingly he turned to God and asked for practical knowledge and insight to rule. God was pleased with Solomon, for the king had asked for something which would help him carry out his God-given task, the kingship, and not for something which would promote his own glory. The Lord

In1 Kings3 we read an account of Solomon’s wisdom at work in a court case involving two women (IKings3:1628). He insightfully solved a dispute over a child, a case made difficult because no witnesses were present to speak on behalf of either woman. With understanding of motherhood, Solomon ordered the child cut in two so that each woman could have half. Solomon knew that the true mother would rather give up the child than see him die. As a result of this ruling, Israel marveled “because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.”(1Kings3:28). Solomon’s wisdom, however, extended far beyond the borders of Israel. His widespread fame is evidenced in the story of the queen of Sheba. (1Kings10:1-13). Sheba was a wealthy country because of its trade in spices and precious met-

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs1:7). Wisdom is practical. It has to do with knowing how to live life in conformity with God’s will. When we think of practical wisdom in the Old Testament, we naturally think of the book of Proverbs. Solomon may not have written the whole of Proverbs, but he was responsible for most of the book. Indeed, his name stands at the critical juncture in the book. Proverbs 1:7, the conclusion to the opening section, sets the tone for the entire book. This proverb consists of a positive statement followed by a warning. In the first half of the verse we learn that the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. In the second half we read that the fool is one who resist wisdom. The fool doesn’t fear God, but (Contd.. on p. 16)

15

(Contd.. from p. 15) rather in his heart he denies God. (Psalm 53:1). When we think of fear, we often have a negative emotion in mind. We treat fear as a synonym of terror or panic. The word in this context, how ever, is a synonym of awe or respect. God is after all, the creator of the universe. He is also our creator, and He deserves and demands our respect. Solomon tells us that such fear is the beginning of knowledge. It is the beginning in two senses. It is the first step toward- and the foundation of knowledge. In other words, before we can live wisely in God’s world, we must first realize our subordinate position before the Lord. All knowledge must be built on a proper relationship with the Creator. To start apart from the fear of God is to think falsely and to live a lie.

Solomon-Christ’s Wisdom is Greater, SolomonGod was pleased with His Prayer for Wisdom. “The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom’ and now one greater than Solomon is here.” (Mathew 12:42). Solomon did not ask for riches or glory; God was pleased with his prayer. In spite of his wisdom Solomon was not perfect; he loved foreign women more than he loved the Lord, and he worshiped their idols. God became angry Solomon’s sin, God caused the Israelite empire to crumble. Solomon’s failure reminds us that a human being is neither the origin nor the prime example of wisdom. When we think of wisdom and wish to seek it, we should not look to the man Solomon, but rather to the One he anticipates, Jesus Christ. In Matthew 12:38-45 we read that religious leaders pressed Jesus for a miracle. They wanted Jesus to prove himself by doing something extraordinary. Jesus responded by pointing out their blindness. They should recognize who he is. A gentile queen (the reference is to the queen of sheba) recognizes Solomon’s divinely given wisdom, but the religious leader s could not recognize that “one greater than Solomon is here.”(Matthew12:42). We need other believers especially when we confront difficult tasks or times. Even Solomon didn’t pretend to be a spiritual superman. He followed his own advice: “Without counsel plans go wrong, but with many advisers they succeed.”(Proverbs15:22).Solomon’s major project was building a temple for the Lord. So he found a wise craftsman, Hurambi , to help him. Different people were delegated to do various tasks through out the kingdom. “ We have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in everyway, but not crushed; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2Cor.4:7-9). As Christians we know that Jesus Christ, unlike Solomon, is consistently wise. When we need wisdom, when we need guidance in how to live our lives, we seek Jesus Christ “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”(Col 2:3).

Pope Francis Draws 3M to Rio Vigil (Contd.. from p. 11) people might turn out for Sunday's culminating Mass. "At church, it can be a bit tedious, but here it's amazing," marveled Anna Samson, a 21-year-old rising college senior from Long Beach, California. "Seeing the pope, seeing the Stations of the Cross acted out live, seeing all these young people from all over," she said as she and two friends plied the beach in search of a place to spread their sleeping bags. "It's overwhelming, just amazing." Even the human statues, a fixture on Copacabana beach, were pious Saturday night, drawing crowds of picture-snapping pilgrims with their oversized angel's wings. The Argentine pope began his day with a Mass in Rio's beehive-like modern cathedral where he exhorted 1,000 bishops from around the world to go out and find the faithful, a more diplomatic expression of the direct, off-the-cuff instructions he delivered to young Argentine pilgrims on Thursday. In those remarks, he urged the youngsters to make a "mess" in their dioceses and shake things up, even at the expense of confrontation with their bishops and priests. "We cannot keep ourselves shut up in parishes, in our communities when so many people are waiting for the Gospel!" Francis said in his homily Saturday. "It's not enough simply to open the door in welcome, but we must go out through that door to seek and meet the people." Francis' target audience is the poor and the marginalized -- the people that history's first pope from Latin America has highlighted on this first trip of his pontificate. He has visited one of Rio's most violent slum areas, met with juvenile offenders and drug addicts and welcomed in a place of honor 35 garbage collectors from his native Argentina. He carried that message to a meeting with Brazil's political, economic and intellectual elite, urging them to look out for the poorest and use their leadership positions to work for the common good. He also called for greater dialogue between generations, religions and peoples during the speech at Rio's grand municipal theater. On a few occasions, he looked up at the gilded theater boxes almost in awe from the stage and seemed positively charmed when a few dozen young students of the theater's ballet school sat down around him. At the end of the event, the little ballerinas swarmed Francis, and he gave each one a kiss on the forehead. Also receiving papal embraces were a handful of Brazilian Indians, dressed in their traditional, bare-bellied garb who lined up to kiss his ring. One man gave Francis a feathered headdress, which he gamely wore for a few moments. O O

Parental Fights Are Harmful For Kids If your kid is running away from you and seems to be depressed all the time than do not be surprised. It may be something that you did A couple tends to fight even when they do not stay in the same house. But with a child entering in your life you may want to cut down on the bickering. When the child hears angry voice their stress hormones shoots up. In fact, even a sleeping infant registers loud, angry voices and experiences a rush of stress chemical that takes some time to diminish. An occasional disagreement which moves into problem solving is good for kids. It is considered as a form of role modelling. But arguments in which you repeat the same points over and over, or call each other names can be harmful for the kid. When parents are out of control, the world becomes a scary place. This "mobilization" response can make it difficult for kids to fall asleep[,

because the stress hormones stay in the child's body for hours. Since kids can't turn to the arguing adults for comfort, they stuff their fear, and it pops out in anxiety, defiance or misbehaviour.

With a few alterations, you can change the way a child looks at an argument: O Do not resort to name calling or

any physically abusive behaviour during a fight. O "I'am so sorry-I'm just feeling stressed- can we try that over? What I meant to say was........" Kids learn from this modelling that anyone can get angry, but that we can take responsibility for our own emotion, apologize, and reconnect. O The first few lines of sudden outburst are alright. But one or both the parents should sense the presence of a child in the room and a

polite debate. O At times some fights can be car-

ried out later. This should preferably happen before either one starts yelling. O Ultimate apology and reconciliation helps the child to ease down but do not make this a habit as the child may look at it as a pattern and will always be tensed while waiting for the next outburst.

All We Need Is Love In This World I stand here today humbled and grateful to God for allowing me to breath in on this day because accurate information is a key part of motivation. It hasn't been easy for me to pull through the hardships of this life but am glad to say that I have tried my best to stand and share my side of life with you today. lots of you in here can agree with me that it hasn't been easy to pull through and be where you are now. life is short and few in their life span have had the love and courage to communicate to people in a positive and inspiring way. I wonder what our world would be like if each of us would find a path of true love, a situation where everyone looks out for sunrise with a smile of living through it with a reason to breath. It's true many die and their last words are 'let me go and rest.' True, rest from this world, a bitter place that we all call home. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. The Scripture says that in the last days the love of the great body of people will grow cold. But are we in last days? The answer is no.

The pleasure of taking a journey is not in arriving at the final destination, but in enjoying everything along the way. In my experience, there is only one motivation, and that is desire. No reasons or principle can contain it or stand against it, life is short and as we live through it. Let us have the desire to love and live this world better for our children and their children. Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what's right, extend your hand and let us learn how to truly love.

Thanksgiving

Little Bobbie, while at a neighbour's house , was given a piece of bread and butter, and he politely said "Thank you, Aunty." Aunty: You are welcome dear, I like to hear little boys say thank you . Bobbie: "Well," rejoined. Bobbie: "If you want to hear me say it again, you might put some jam on it." ***** "Isn't the principal a dummy?"-said a boy to a girl. "Well, do you know who I am?"- asked the girl. "No." -replied the boy. "I'm the principal's daughter." - Said the girl. "And do you know who I am?"- asked the boy. "No." - she replied. "Thank goodness!" - said the boy with a sign of relief.

I prayed to Divine Mercy, Mother of Good Health and St. Jude for fast recovery of health of my daughter and it was granted. My heartfelt thanks to them. Sorry for being late.
