Through The Door Of Faith To The Eucharist

There is no doubt that an unforgettable meeting with Jesus is First Holy Communion, a day to remember as one of life s most beautiful. The Eucharist instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, on the night before His Passion, is a Sacrament of the New Covenant. In this Sacrament, the Lord becomes food for the soul under the appearance of bread and wine. At St. Joseph Church grounds it was an evening to remember as 185 Children received First Holy Communion at Joseph Church grounds here on Saturday April 20th at 5.30pm. The principal celebrant for the solemn Eucharist was Rev. Fr. William Miranda,OCD, along with parish clergy and other 7 guest priests. The theme chosen for this celebration was Through the door of Faith to the Eucharist Rev. Fr. William preached an inspiring homily to the children. The Church ground was exquisitely decorated for the occasion by the Sunday School teachers and the liturgy was also animated by them. The joy of welcoming Jesus into their lives and renewing their baptismal promises was evident in the cherubic smiles of the children. At the end Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Dominic Vas thanked all those responsible for making the celebration an enriching experience. Fr.Ivan D souza

Seize The Moment: Don t Wait For Tomorrow To Become A Leader And Change Things

Some lessons can t be taught in those moral science classes. For those lessons, you only have life and its experiences to lean on. For everything that goes wrong today, those moral scriptures told us, we have tomorrow to bounce back with a vengeance, work on and correct them. What however we learnt all by ourselves over the course of time was that for tomorrow to be as glorious as we wished and envisioned it to be, it is today that we have in hand to take the initiative and begin working towards. Every single day, life teaches us the importance of living in the present. Of working for the task that we have on hand today. If exams are round the corner, one needs to begin preparing today instead of wasting one s time cribbing. If there are issues troubling us, voice needs to be raised today and now. What we have with us are only our principles, beliefs and our initiatives. The 5th Space reiterates that very thought of foregrounding the now, not the future. Of creating leaders out of people today and not waiting for them to enlighten themselves with time. Whatever the form might be, what s important is that we learn to act and lead today. Reaction is not what is needed, response is. Instant, active and empathetic responses. It is necessary that we ask the important, uncomfortable questions. It is necessary that we hold informed views. It is necessary that when we exercise our rights to vote next year, we do so knowing whether whom we re reposing faith in deserve it. Leaders aren t born out of convenience. They are born out of initiative and spirit. The 5th Space envisions that very space where people look beyond themselves as soon as they come across issues that bother them. The violation of our rights is just among the many things that sadden us. But it shouldn t be that way. It should galvanize us to take a stand and demand a stop to all this. There are people who say that actions, not words matter. And instead of criticizing the country and its policies, one should grow up to do something for it. But that s looking way too far. The country requires each one of us now, contributing in whatever little way we can. It requires a certain leadership and spirit of us. This is why we shouldn t wait to get our degrees and have our lives in order till our conscience awakens. It has to come from us now. Change doesn t look for the right hour or an opportune moment to manifest itself. And the time to bring about a change cannot be debated and deliberated upon. It might just be too late by then.

Rest In Peace Fr Salu.....Fr. Reuben

There are priests that you are in awe of...you watch them from a distance...you hear about their work..their struggles...their humaneness...and you cannot help but try to emulate even a fraction of their personalities... And then God gives you the opportunity to work with them..to watch them from close quarters...to draw strength from their experience...to work for the Kingdom..... That is how it was for me when it came to Fr Salu...when i was little I heard about how he was attacked and came back to life ready to serve in the very place where he faced opposition....when i was studying for the priesthood and then was ordained, i would hear about his good work in the missions and the parishes he had been entrusted with...then the accident occurred where Fr Tommy Kuruvilla died and Fr Salu was fighting for his life and I knew once again that he would come alive to serve in God's Kingdom... And then I got the opportunity to work with him...from day one he encouraged the use of my talents and skills..that's the way he made his assistants grow....he empowered them with his trust and his advice..he was stern yet friendly...he corrected faults with compassion...he was a team man...a father figure...a genuine hu-

4

man being... He loved chocolates...one of the passions we shared...he loved the poor....he wanted to help them as much as he could...i remember a trip we made together to Talasari and how the people just flocked to see where he was...he was like a deity, though i knew he was embarrassed by the adulation... Team Salu was like family...sharing...fooling...enjoying our meals...our meetings...our outings.... Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer took its toll...he fought it with courage...every encounter with him was a lesson in endurance...my final encounter was on Good Friday when i went to preach the Three Hour's Agony in Mahim and I could see that he was going through his own...but yet he smiled at the jibes of his assistants who tried to maintain the good spirit.... Priests like Fr Salu don't come by so easily..but when they do they have opened God's large and compassionate heart to us...I will cherish the love, the advice and memories... Till we meet again, Fr Salu...we know we have lost an exemplary priest, and a possible Bishop ..a trustworthy friend...an irreplaceable mentor...a good human.... May you rest in peace!!!

Time To Take A Call

The induction of Narendra Modi into the Parliamentary Board is viewed by the JD[U] as a challenge. The BJP has been trying to eat the cake and have it too by not making its intentions clear. They prefer to maintain status quo and even hope to fight the elections [under the banner of NDA with JD[U] on board ] and get the benefit of a combined fight to avoid split votes. Once they get enough seats they can gauge if Nitish Kumar can be dumped and declare Narendra Modi as their candidate. The Bihari stalwart is smarter. He has been saying that only NDA can decide on the candidate and that too before the elections. This has put the BJP in a quandary. With no unanimity even within the party, to make matters worse, the party Chief is busy trying to salvage the already fractured alliance. Now Nitish Kumar has given ultimatum to the BJP either name the candidate by year end or be ready for the breakup. In case of mid term elections, they will advance the deadline, with no escape route for BJP. The Shiv Sena too has upped the ante. With two important allies openly dictating terms to the BJP, the Akalis are lying low hoping BJP will not openly oppose clemency plea for the assassin of the former CM. With opinion polls showing a grim picture for the BJP as well, the problem is further compounded. Not many parties will want to align with Modi. This perhaps brightens the chances of Sushma Swaraj but Modi is likely to oppose because she is young and can keep Modi out for a long time unlike Advani whose tenure can be one term at best. That may force Modi to back Advani as a consensus candidate. This is something which was written in this column about a year ago. The BJP is still not prepared to accept inclusive road map. Sudheendra Kulkarni, in his column in the Indian Express Thinking Aloud has stressed that the party needs to embrace JP philosophy based on social inclusion and good governance and make sustained efforts to end its alienation of Muslims. He also calls for redefining its

Indulgence Stretched Too Far

Only recently when Sanjay Dutt declared that he will surrender, a lot of people praised him for opting for the right course. It appears that his legal advisers [for reasons best known to them but not difficult to guess] possibly goaded him into believing that there could be no public outcry if he asked for extension of 6 months [though that too is frowned upon] to complete his films . His well-wishers want us to believe that he asked for more time because he had the interest of workers at heart who would otherwise be starving. This is the most bizarre reason one could ever think bankruptcy in thought process. They should have come clean and said that nearly 300 crores are at stake. The Court showed indulgence and agreed for a four week extension to enable him to complete his assignments. This will set a bad precedent. Whatever assignments the producers offered him were all after he was charged for unlawful possession of arms. Hence to give the actor time to finish his filmy work is highly questionable. The public is not amused. Whatever sympathy Sanjay Dutt garnered during the press conference, when he broke down, is lost. He asked to be left alone and every body thought he wanted to introspect and be ready to face the remaining sentence. Actually, he wanted to be left alone so that he could sit with his legal advisors to chalk out his future course of action. It will be interesting to see if, in future, the courts continue to extend such indulgence to each and every convict to enable him or her finish any commercial obligation. Sometimes mothers are forced to leave their young kids at home and undergo imprisonment where they need care. So why be selective? *****

MLAs Go Scot-free

The in-house committee has ex-

by Marshall Sequeira onerated the MLAs who thrashed the police officer who simply did his duty. He was summoned to give his version but received something else in return. The reason, for letting off the errant MLAs, is equally bizarre there is no clarity in the footage and that the injury was not serious. Do they consider only death as serious? There is wide spread resentment but was it not expected? After all, they all belong to the same family [politicians] who know to scratch each other s back for mutual benefit. In one of the television debates, a Shiv Sena representative, Narvekar [?] said that it was a committee constituted by the Speaker and therefore the findings cannot be questioned. If people are not satisfied, they should change the constitution itself. Wonderful idea! Shiv Sena is a part of NDA which has reacted adversely to the report of the JPC which has only blamed Raja and not the PM and FM in the 2G scam. Will the party apply the name logic saying that since the JPC was constituted by the Speaker of Lok Sabha, the findings should be accepted without any protest? There is no difference between the two committees both constituted by respective Speakers.. What is not addressed in the assembly committee report is, what punishment should be meted to the guilty for assaulting a police officer. An ordinary citizen would have been put behind bars and also given some special treatment in the lock up. It s fine that the committee has let off the MLSs. What is stopping the respective parties from taking action? By not doing anything, they have given an impression that the MLAs are a different species. They have all the privileges but the public is saddled with only duties.

Fr. Salu: A Good Friend A Saint! OBITUARY

Rev Fr Salvador Rodrigues (Episcopal Vicar) Archdiocese of Bombay & Parish Priest of St. Michael Church, Mahim. S/o (Late) Francis Gabriel & Eufemia B/o Anthony / Anita, Lourdes / Patrick, John, Cassian / Lorna passed away on 24.4.2013.

by Leon Bent When the parish was asleep, he prayed. When devotees were turning up for the early morning Mass, he was back from an hour s brisk walk, already freshened up, and ready to celebrate the Eucharist. When the parish was awake, he tended his flock. While the world was in turmoil, he was collected and composed. His sanctum sanctorum oozed esoteric silence! Salu had his roots in heaven and his fruits and flowers on earth! He did not wear his interior life on his sleeve, though, but his luminous face and serene demeanor, had the imprint of Jesus! Salvador Rodrigues, a product of St. John the Evangelist s Parish, Fort, and Holy Name High School, Colaba, and I, together with a promising and gifted, gushing, batch of sixteen-year-olds, joined the Diocesan Seminary, Goregaon, on June 24, 1964. His lineage can be traced to Olaulim, Pomurba, Goa, where he still has his ancestral home. Salu breathed his last, at about 7.45 p.m. Wednesday, April, 24, 2013. He was a victim of pancreatic cancer. His funeral Mass, celebrated by Cardinal Oswald, Bishops Bosco and Percy and hundreds of priests and nuns, was attended by thousands of mourners, at St. Michael s Church, Mahim, at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013. I remember Salu as a robust teenager, full of energy, with strong, shapely legs,a fleeting pair of feet and twinkling toes! He was a bright student and a member of the Seminary Choir. In the late 1960s,Salu and a group of Seminarians went on a Compassionate Mission, to succor the cyclone-stricken, poverty-driven Bangladeshis in their utterly ravaged

Buried at St. Michael Church, Mahim on 28th April 2013. He servered as an Eccl. Advisor of Bombay Catholic Sabha for 18 years Fr. Salu as he was popularly known was a senior priest of the Archdiocese, a member of the College of Consultors, a member of the Priest's Council, was known for his dispute redressal abilities and headed many an inquiry committee.

country. He returned with a touch of cholera, and, perhaps, this tough experience was baptism-by-fire for his radical missionary calling! It was a moment of discernment when St. Francis Xavier-like zeal, took root in his evangelical heart. As a young priest he had a long, very fruitful stint with the tribals of Talasari; his heart aflame with the Good News! Salu very nearly achieved martyrdom, for Christ s sake, with his present companion at St. Michael s Church, Fr. BlaiseD Mello. While the fertile fields of this far-flung Mission Station were washed in crimson, they feigned death, and remained to serve Jesus with greater vigor than ever before. I remember one of our Bishops saying, many years ago, that Salu was one of the best priests of the Archdiocese of Bombay! He was honest to the core, reliable and sagacious, simple, humble and holy. The beautiful Bhayandar Church is a powerful testimony to this fact. His deft, discreet, experthandling of the extensive properties of this once poor, Portugueseinfluenced, sleepy East Indian enclave has made it Mumbai s richest parish!Salu, true to his nature, never

advertised his achievements, but did it all for God s glory. My friend of well-nigh fifty years was gifted with wisdom, understanding, knowledge and counsel, and this Spirit-filled aura enveloped him, and singled him out as special. No wonder he was Dean wherever he was planted, and twice appointed Episcopal Vicar. He bravely worked in the Lord s Vineyard, in this capacity, even when in dire straits, physically. The hand of God kept him from being Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, as his terminal illness prompted Rome to look elsewhere. Surely Salu must have thanked God endlessly for this great blessing, as his mind and heart were full of self-emptying love, and abiding by the Father s will at all times. This genial Parish Priest was upright, non-judgmental, never biased, not easily swayed, no matter the propaganda and gossip against a person. He always spoke the truth, like Jesus before Pilate, and left the dialoguing (if at all!) parties to discern and settle a delicate, nagging issue, mutually. He never influenced the trend of a meeting with admonishing words or prosaic theology.

May 6, 2013

He insisted pragmatically, Never go to Court! He lived the dictum: There is no justice without peace; no peace without justice. He believed in natural justice, a long-forgotten virtue! All children are equal! A Will is humanlycrafted law; natural justice is God s will! He was an ethical man and lived strictly by its principles, strictly! As Parishof Our Lady of Lourdes, Orlem,Saluwas offered a tidy fortune, to put it mildly, in exchange for transferring rights of a disputed Church property to a prominent builder, which hepolitely, promptly declined. His stand was crystal clear: My predecessors have petitioned the High Court for a specific consideration, plus interest. I cannot change this legal position and blackmail the purchaser for unjust gain. He settled the deal according to the tenets of the law and morals, which the earlier Parish Priests had resorted to. Worldly tugs and pulls could not lure him! Salu was austere, frugal and disciplined, yet, he was not rigid in his thinking or harsh in his dealings. He never spoke against anyone, never (!), or held a grudge if someone rubbed him the wrong way. He was slow to voice an opinion, seldom reacted, but always responded appropriately and courteously, with compassion, mercy and gentleness. He had a soft corner for the poor, the down-trodden and broken-hearted.This explains the perpetual crowdwaiting outside his room, to pour out its heart to him, one by one, morning and evening, every single day. Each one was given a listening ear, rich or poor, and valued for the precious person, s/he was. This pleasantly dressed, remarkable priesthad a striking swagger and lilt, in his graceful, uprightgait.

May 6, 2013

My wife, Lorraine, invariably admired the spring in his step, and repeatedly urged me to pick up a few health tips from my colleague. Others liked Salu s perfectly-preened beard, his mellow voice, his heart-to-heart homilies, his command over five languages, his sound advice, his 24x7 availability, his comforting presence. This selfless priest, close to God s own heart, had a second near-death experience on his way back from Goa about six years ago. His buddy at the wheel, Fr. Tommy, did not survive the accident. This could be one of the reasons our friend valued life and love even more. Such traumatic misfortunes are priceless as the good Lord gifts them only to his favored ones. So, Saluwas, providentially, thrice-born, not just twice-born, as Catholics are called to be! This down-to-earth, humble priest s pastoral ministry can be succinctly summed up,bythe Good Shepherd metaphor. He saved his pastoral best for the lonely, the least and the

lost. His fundamental option was for the poor! He was thoroughly convinced and committed to the Parish being a community of communities. No wonder Bishop Bosco appointed him Director of BCCs for the Archdiocese of Bombay. He was also part of the College of Consultors and on the Priests Council of the Archdiocese. He was a fountain of forgiveness and healing in the Confessional. I have personally experienced his sensitive, empathetic acceptance of the penitent as a fragile, fallen, nevertheless, a graced human person. Like numerous others, I often left his presence, even otherwise, with a sense of peace and joy - a heart filled with small conversions, little miracles. The parishioners of Bhayandar, Santa Cruz, Orlem (seven years), and St. Michael s (twice), will miss him dearly. But Salu will remain alive in his attractiveness within them, which has become so much a part of their everyday lives. It is said that, it is easier to be a saint than to live with one. Not Salu! He was both, lovable and a person one could live with. Lorrainewill forever treasure his tight, warm handshake. His embrace made her sense his deep, authentic love! He was ever so tender! The essence of sanctity is to be a great lover! My Colleague, Comrade, Confessor and Confidant will remain evergreen in my memory! These thousand words and more are flowers that the adivasis whom he served, his once-rustic parishioners of Bhayandar, and the city folk of Mumbai, would have liked to lay on his grave. He opened up so much life for everyone

The Divine Seal Of The Christian Faith His Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension

In the early chapters of Luke s Gospel we are told of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Six days later , Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain , by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. Mk.9:2-3. In thwarting disbelievers and their attempts to discredit the Resurrection of Christ came a second incredible challenge for them on knowing about the Ascension and Transfiguration of Jesus. He had indeed Risen and Ascended into heaven. The Gospel of St. Mark reveals the truth of the Ascension, laconically : 16:19 , So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them , was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. St John , 20:17 gives us an account of Jesus when he stood before Mary after his Resurrection and told her : Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father , but go to my brethren and say to them , I am ascending to my Father and your Father , to my God and your God. At St. Peter s Basilica on Ascension Thursday 1977, Pope Paul VI spoke to a gathering of new cardinals : The Ascension draws the eyes of our soul

and fixes them on this splendid and luminous figure of the Lord who rises in the sky like a fiery globe, which, the further it moves away, the brighter and more dazzling it becomes, until it surpasses the light of the cosmic sun and He Himself becomes the splendor of the universe, revealing deep, new aspects of it as a result of that illumination itself. Our eyes are dazzled and the brilliance becomes a mystery. But our joy remains and becomes awareness, becomes words, becomes song. Christ has risen bodily from earth. He remains physically with us on earth in the Holy Eucharist. Son of man .

- Melvyn Brown

After His Resurrection Jesus had appeared many times to the apostles and spoke with them, especially of the Kingdom of God. 40 days later He manifested Himself to them for the last time in Jerusalem. All power is given to me in heaven and in earth, said the Lord Jesus , adding : as the Father hath sent Me, I also send you. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost ; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And , behold, I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world. The people hurried to every corner of the city and told those who would listen about the transfiguration and Ascension of Jesus. The Son of man was truly the Lord Jesus God of all who believes in Him. There was also a time when Jesus spoke of heavenly things. St. John 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the

God s agenda at the climax, was His glorious Resurrection and Ascension. Our Christian faith finds no comparison in other beliefs. Surely, it is the cornerstone of hope, justice, eternity and love. In the Gospel of St. Mathew 16:18 Jesus said : And I tell you , you are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Yes, the Church will overcome. It will survive chaos , corruption, upheaval and dissent. Let us therefore live eschatologically for our reward awaits us in heaven. The Ascension of Christ to His Father is now our legacy.

Goa Catholics oppose Sun Worship Margao: The Catholic Association of Goa (CAG) has complained to state governor and other high officials against event that allegedly forced students to take part in an event that involved the mass display of surya namaskar or sun worship exercise. The CAG has written also written to state chief minister, the archbishop, the education minister as well as the chairman of the National Minorities Commission complaining about the event held recently, Times of India reported. The CAG said catholic students were compelled to take part in surya namaskar as part of the event organized by the education department along with the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs (DYSA). The complaint said the act was against religious freedom as provided for in the constitution of India. "The education department's circular to the schools was not very clear and hence almost all the catholic schools made it compulsory for the students of IX, X and XI. The physical education teachers of each school went overboard to please the eduation depart-

5. Ask questions: You are going to spend your entire life with person and you have right to know everything about him/her. You can collect more information about such person by asking him/her questions. But do not rely on others in this case. If he/she is giving loyal answers to your questions then judge such person yourself. tant for you: You should make a list of qualities that you want to see in your partner. You don't need to make list on paper, just make list in mind, because it is very difficult to find 100% matching person. Some of the qualities you may look for are honesty, open minded, perfect job, looks, truthfulness etc. Because these are the universal characteristics that everyone looks for. 3. Look for these characteristics: When you complete your list of required characteristics then you can look for such qualities in a person you are dating with. In most of Indian homes still arranged marriages are preferred, in such case, try to look qualities in the person with whom you are supposed to be marry. 4. Discuss and spend time : If you find some person with same qualities as you are looking for then spend more time with such person. It is necessary to bring out his/her more qualities and real nature. So discuss some issues with him/her. If you are making good couple then, you will get more joy at each meeting and you will be eager to meet that person again, soon. First discuss the issues which may create different opinions between you and your partner. You will know better the real nature and qualities of person by discussing which are serious and confusing.

6. Be honest: You want your partner to be honest with you then first you must be honest with him/her. Don't hesitate to tell some complex things that have faced in your life. I will also recommend to tell him/her about your past mistakes, if you are making good couple and want to be in marriage. Because such things will create more critical problems that may wipe out your entire life. Being trusty is very important in any relationship. 7. What he/she thinks about you: It is also important to know what your partner is thinking about you? Merely you want to be with him/her will not make good couple. But if both of you want to be with each other then only there more chances of becoming good couple. Marriage is important incident in (Contd.. on p. 17)

In Mumbai, the main celebration and Mass will be held at St Peter s Church, Bandra. The SSVP was set up in 1863 by Ozanam. Currently, the 180-year-old organisation works in 149 countries. By educating underprivileged children, we ensure that they have a better future as their job prospects and means of earning a good livelihood in future is ensured, said Graciano Monteiro, treasurer of the Mumbai Council. SSVP hopes that Ozanam, who has been declared blessed a step towards sainthood by the Catholic Church, will be canonised (declared a saint) soon. Monteiro said, Blessed Frederic was beatified [awarded the title Blessed] in 1997. We pray that he will be canonised a saint at the earliest.

Bishop Jin of Shanghai Dies at 96 Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian of Shanghai, a prominent and controversial figure in the Church of China, died on 27thy April 2013, Saturday aged 96 following a long struggle against pancreatic cancer, reports Ucanews. His prominence was reflected from the title of his biography Le Pape Jaune (the Yellow Pope), written by French journalist Dorian Malovic in 2006. The Vatican thinks that I don t work enough for the Vatican, and the government thinks that I work too much for the Vatican, the prelate said in an interview with The Atlantic in 2007. It is not easy to satisfy both. Following his release from detention and return to Shanghai in 1982, Bishop Jin played a leading role in the Church in China, It started with his leading the rebuilding of China s biggest diocese Shanghai where he resumed leadership of the seminary on his return.

He was taken into detention in 1955 when he was rector of the diocesan seminary in the city. He became a figure of significance in Shanghai and on the national stage. He persuaded the authorities to allow

inclusion of prayer for the Pope in the Eucharistic Prayers said during Masses and helped to develop the liturgy in Chinese. The Church in China lost contact with the reforms of Vatican Council II during decades of political turmoil.

Pope FrancisÂ’ austerity measures a welcome step

Austerity measures in the Catholic church have begun for sure with the crackdown by Pope Francis on Vatican bank officials and the cancellation of the annual stipend of 25,000/ euros of 5 Cardinals overseeing the bankÂ’s running. The move which is a sequel to Pope FrancisÂ’ earlier symbolic gestures of option for the poor , is bound to trigger dissent and discontent in the top echelons of the Vatican Curia and those involved in the murky dealings of the Vatican bank and money laundering activities, which have brought shame and scandal to the Church over the years. The writing on the wall is therefore clear. We now have a Pope in our midst pursuing an agenda of option for the poor and austerity, long overdue in the church. For too long have we put up with accusations by the churchÂ’s detractors that the Catholic church preaches a gospel of poverty,

8

1-95

even as its bishops and Cardinals continue to live in palatial apartments with chauffer driven limousines. We seem to have lost sight of Jesus’ frugal lifestyle and his message to the selfrighteous rich man in the gospel of Mark to “ sell what you own and give the money to the poor , and you will have treasure in heaven , then come follow me” ( Mark 10: 21).

Keep the Traditions Meaningfull

A wedding in a Catholic family is a beautiful occasion for relatives and friends to gather around the bride-tobe or bridegroom-to-be in support and encouragement and also to bless them. Traditional ceremonies like the Roce for Goans and Mangaloreans or the Umbracha Pani for East Indians have added to the fun and excitement in preparation for the wedding day. The application of coconut oil and milk as a sign of ritual cleansing and anointing or a bath with the water drawn from the

village well has a certain significance for the persons getting to be married. Unfortunately over the years, these ceremonies have degenerated into meaningless rituals because the ‘fun’ element has meant the unnecessary smashing of eggs or the dunking of even chilled beer or other smelly concoctions on the persons to be married.

Life Without Bread

I know best what it is to be poor. We were six children , grandparents and parents take makes ten. My father was the only bread earner .We had fields that gave us food but could not afford to eat fish, meat etc. My mom used to get fish and put everything in the curry. Cost of the fish was just one rupee and two. We never ate fried fupeeish because oil was expensive for the person who earned only 390 rupees. But today what hurts me most is christians pour oil on statue of mother Mary. that oil if given to poor people would make them happy. —Ana Maria Fernandes

Security Is Priority ManÂ’s life is spent in seeking to collect his security. From birth we seek the security that is given by the mother and later we always look for the security that offers the coverage of our parents. We go to school to ensure that later we can find a good job. At work, we ensure that we can increase and maintain a steady revenue stream May 6, 2013

that allows us to meet our security of covering our basic needs and our daily living expenses. Also, if possible, we save money to make sure that we have enough resources in case we come across any contingency. We also seek financial security for our old age. And as we reach the end of our earthly journey we ensure that our death does not become a

financial burden to our loved ones. Few realize that after physical death we have a long life, not in this world, for which we must be prepared and secured. We put our trust in the riches, few or many, that we may have. And so we spend a life time working hard to strengthen our security without realizing that true security can only come from within ourselves and our belief in God. 15

Women are more prone to health issues

It is true that the male and female bodies are prone to illness, disease and general maintenance. Women health issues can be far more distinct than those faced by men. Such problem occurs starts early in life and continues lifelong.

Reproductive issues: Girls initially face the difficulties if being a woman when the menstrual cycle begins. Chemical imbalances in the body can result in infections, and also affects their mental health.

Common illness: Every woman soon discovers that there are some diseases that tend to influence females more than men. For instance, men are three times less likely to suffer from stones than women, and are also less likely to experience usual migraine head-

aches. Females are as well more prone to bowel issues than men. Their immune system is also not as strong as men.

Autoimmune problems: Multiple sclerosis and lupus are also seen more in women than men. Both are autoimmune conditions in which the immunity of the body responds negatively to the body s tissue and causes degenerative symptoms that affect women s health. Nine out of ten patients with these conditions are female.

Calcium deficiencies: As a woman grows old, the density of her bones progressively declines. Often times, woman can lose as much as one half of their whole bone mass. It also makes them more injury to their bones.

Church Is Not NGO, Warns Pope Vatican City: The Church is not a bureaucratic organization, it is a story of love, if "it creates offices and becomes somewhat bureaucratic, the Church loses its main substance and is in danger of turning into an NGO. And the Church is not an NGO". The statement was repeated at Mass this morning by Pope Francis celebrated in the chapel of St. Martha's residence. Among those present, were employees of the Institute for Religious Works (IOR). According to Vatican Radio, the Pope himself brought the subject up: "It's a love story ... But there are those from the IOR ... excuse me, eh! .. some things are necessary, offices are required ... ok! but they are necessary up to a certain point: as an aid to this love story. But when organization takes first place, love falls down and the Church, poor thing, becomes an NGO. And this is not the way forward." The readings of the day tell the story of the first Christian community that grows and multiplies its disciples. A good thing, says the Pope, but that can push to make "deals" to get even "more partners in this venture." "Instead, the path that Jesus willed for his Church is another: the path of the difficulties, the path of the Cross, the path of persecution ... And this makes us wonder: What is this Church? This, our Church so it doesn't seems a human enterprise". The Church is "something more": "the disciples do not the Church make, they are only the messengers sent by Jesus. And Christ was sent by the Father." So, you see that the Church begins there, in the heart of the Father, who had this idea ... I do not know if He had an idea, the Father: the Father had love. This love story began, this love story that lasts through time and still has not ended. We, the women and men of the Church, we are in the middle of a love story: each of us is a link in this chain of love. And if we do not understand this, we do not understand anything about what

... Church is Mother. And we are in the middle of a love story that runs on the power of the Holy Spirit and we, all of us together, are a family in the Church who is our Mother. " the Church is. " "The Church does not grow thanks to human strength: some Christians made mistakes for historical reasons, they took a wrong turn, they had armies, and they waged wars of religion: that is another story, which is not this love story. We too must learn by our mistakes how the love story progresses. But how does it grow Like Jesus simply said, like the mustard seed, it grows like the yeast in the flour, without noise. "The Church grows "from the bottom, slowly." "And when the Church wants to boast of its quantity and makes organizations, and makes offices and become somewhat bureaucratic, then the Church loses its main substance and is in danger of turning into an NGO. And the Church is not an NGO. It's a love story ... But there are those from the IOR ... excuse me, eh! .. some things are necessary, offices are required ... ok! but they are necessary up to a certain point: as an aid to this love story. But when organization takes first place, love falls down and the Church, poor thing, becomes an NGO. And this is not the way forward. " A head of state, he said, asked how big the Pope's army was. But the Church does not grow "through the military", but with the power of the Holy Spirit. Because the Church is not an organization. "No, it is a Mother. It is a Mother. There are many mothers here, at this Mass. How would you feel if

someone said to you:' So... you are the manager of your house '?' No, I am the Mammy!. 'And the Church is Mother. And we are in the middle of a love story that runs on the power of the Holy Spirit and we, all of us together, are a family in the Church who is our Mother. " Source: AsiaNews

For Good Vision

An eye is the most import a n t and the delicate organ in our body. It is our eyes that help us view the world in a better way. Hence we should be very careful when it comes to the caring of our eyes. The following tips can help you keep your eyes healthy and give you a clear vision: 1. Provide good light for reading work, or study (soft background light plus a light on your task) 2. Take regular breaks from close work and visually demanding tasks. Blink often and close and rest your eyes when they feel tired or dry. 3. Avoid glare on TV and computer screens. Place your TV or computer screen where lights do not reflect on the screen. Some people find it easier to work on a computer in a dimly lit room. And some use special non glare screens that fit of the computer screen 4. Wear proper eye safety equipment for hazardous tasks like working in mills or factories. 5. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes from excessive ultraviolet light from the sun, which increases the risk of cataracts. 6. Avoid smoke and other things like dust that irritate your eyes.

Faรงade of Our Lady of Health at Sancoale

Month's Mind Mass

The first church of Sancoale, which lies in Mormugao taluka today, was founded in 1606 and dedicated to Our Lady of Health. It caught fire in 1834. Only its faรงade still stands on the banks of the Zuari river. The erstwhile Portuguese government had declared it a national monument on 19.3.1937.
