100 Christian Homes Burned In Lahore

Lahore - This morning (9th March), an angry mob set fire to over 100 homes in the Joseph Colony Christian settlement, near Badami Bah (Lahore). Residents were forced to flee and at least 35 people were injured. The attack resulted from an accusation of blasphemy registered against one of the settlement residents, Sawan Masih, who yesterday afternoon had an altercation with a Muslim. According to initial reports, the 26 year old Christian went to the Islamic barber for a haircut, but the store owner, Imran Shahid, refused to serve him. A heated discussion arose between the two, and the Muslim reportedly used offensive words about Christianity. Together with other people, Shahid then went to the nearby police station, the group recorded a charge of blasphemy against Masih (art.295C), arguing that the

young man was drunk and had insulted the Prophet Muhammad. Shortly after, the police arrested the Christian. The maximum penalty under that law is life imprisonment. The anger of the Islamic community did not subside however, and this morning a large group of people ransacked Joseph Colony, then set fire to the homes. "We were working like every day Salamat Masih, a resident of the settlement told AsiaNews - when we started to hear a noise, and suddenly a wall of people fell upon the colony. They threw acid and stoned our houses, then set them on fire. The authorities intervened only when everything was destroyed". The local imam said Sawan will be killed when found. Human rights associations, such as Masihi Foundation and Life for All rushed to the scene to help the victims. (AsiaNews)

ing in the home and at school. When girls do not receive a wellrounded education, they cannot impart the same to t h e i r offspring. It is a simple, yet profound truth. Woman of today needs to get her own identity because identity is the key for all human beings. It is imperative that a woman knows her strengths as well as her weaknesses so that she may be the best team member working cooperatively with all around her whether she is playing a game at home or away . Women have always and will always be working women . Women nurture on the home front as they have done throughout time, but now women are more and more stepping outside of the home to contribute in corporate, educational, social service, medical, financial, and a varying and endless list of career paths. Women have played important role in the society. So many women have impacted today s society for the better. There is an endless list where many unsung

women in various parts of our nation have changed lives and shaped destinies giving new direction to so many in the country. However, women have always had a challenging task to be in the forefront in a number of male-dominated sectors. Even though certain societal norms may not always be able to accommodate women in leadership, they have created opportunities to serve in the least likely places. Women definitely bring to the fore different skill sets as leaders with their multi-tasking, tremendous networking abilities. The highest priority for our country to grow during this time is to cling to the rich value system and ensure human dignity all through. India has such depth of diversity and every citizen has to uphold and support the aspirations of women that they live with dignity and reach their rightful place in society. Being a woman translates into hard work, determination and, quite naturally, comes with a calling from above to invest a lifetime into encouraging all those with whom a woman comes in contact. The woman is the foundation of the family and of society itself. Women today need to have faith in themselves and believe in their own God-given abilities and accept one s unique skills and talents, learn to own them, and to use them fearlessly and contribute to the world. Whenever there is contribution our life becomes a celebration.

The Tailor Who Has Dressed Every Pope Since 1922 Italy: Making bespoke clothes is tricky when you don't know who will wear them. But Gammarelli, the Roman tailor that has dressed every pope since 1922, gets around that by catering for every eventuality. Unveiled in its window on Monday were three ivory cassocks in small, medium and large a choice which it hopes will keep it covered no matter who emerges from the Sistine Chapel as the next leader of the Roman Catholic church. Alongside the robes would go a white skullcap, a red velvet cape and four or five pairs of red shoes, said Lorenzo Gammarelli, one of the business's owners. "We are providing more than three pairs of shoes because you can adjust a cassock or a suit but you must wear the right size shoes," he said. Cardinals have yet to fix a date for a conclave to elect Benedict XVI's successor, but once they do, the cassocks and other papal paraphernalia will be dispatched from Gammarelli to the Vatican. They have to arrive before it begins, said Gammarelli, as the new pope will need them for his first appearance before the faithful in St Peter's square

and they will not be able to enter once the secretive proceedings kick off. The business, which has been catering to the Roman curia and papacy since 1798, has supplied every pope since 1922 when it began keeping records, Gammarelli said. The seven pontiffs ranged in size from the portly John XXIII to his slender successor, Paul VI. However, Gammarelli, based near the Pantheon, does not have a monopoly: Benedict, who wore Gammarelli for his first appearance as pontiff, provoked some controversy during his eight years as pope when he was reported to also be ordering tunics from rival outfitters Euroclero. This time, the business has had to work even harder than usual to get the clothes ready on time after Benedict's

shock abdication. "We were completely surprised, as everyone else I think," said Gammarelli. The fact that the pope had not died meant that the mourning period usually observed for nine days did not take place. "We received the order a few days after Benedict declared that he was going to resign and we finished on Friday, so we took quite a while," he said. "To make one cassock we need three and a half days." Each cassock is made of ivory satin wool with silk cuffs. The large model is thought to be modelled on papabili such as Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, while the small may be orientated more towards his fellow cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, from the Philippines.

International Women s Day Celebration

International Women s Day Celebrations organized by the Women s Commission of the Archdiocese of Bombay on 3rd March, 2013 at St Michael s Church, Mahim were indeed a grand success. The warm welcome address accorded by Sabrina Albuquerque, to the near 500 strong crowd of mostly women set the ball rolling for an exciting programme. We began by paying homage to God through cultural gestures of lighting the Indian lamp by some of the dignitaries present, which included Sr Jeanne Devos ICM, (honourable awardee) and His Lordship Emeritus Bosco Penha. This was followed by singing of the Women s Anthem. Marcia D Cunha, Executive Secretary of the Women s Commission introduced the group to forthcoming initiatives of the 37 Million Diyas campaign. She concluded with the heartrending video by Andre de Cunha featuring the shockingly horrendous plight of many women in India today, set against Ram Sampat s melodious O Ri Chiraiya of Aamir Khan s Satyameva Jayate fame. Another interesting item was the dramatic recitation of the poem by Maya Angelou Still I Rise , which was followed by the global One Billion Rising dance by a young energetic group of young girls and their choreographer. The equally energetic compere Josephine Fernandes got the crowd to rise to their feet and join the dance from their places. Fr Ralph Fernandes, ecclesiastical advisor to the

Women s Commission, then read a poem MenRise which delivered a man s point of view and was indeed meaningful. This was followed by the much awaited award-winning ceremony and after Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala introduced both the aforementioned awardees, their citations were read and the awards handed over by His Lordship Bishop Bosco Penha. Awardee Sr Jeanne Devos, of Belgian origin and belonging to the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, said that she accepted the award in the name of the domestic workers movement, incidentally for whom she had dedicated her life. Awardee Flavia Agnes, Advocate, accepted the award on behalf of the women she worked for, those who suffer domestic and sexual violence. Both of them spoke a few words of challenge and inspiration. A panel discussion followed, moderated by Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala. The Eucharist, indeed a thanksgiving for all we had experienced, was presided over by Bishop Bosco Penha and he gave a meaningful homily highlighting the contribution made by women to society and the Church. The programme ended with a well-deserved lunch together and with a sense of satisfaction we left a little more inspired from the programme and also challenged to actively participate in the cause of women. Tamil Nadu Catholics pledge organs this Lent

Chennai: The Catholic Church in Tamil Nadu during this Lent season is urging members to donate blood and register themselves as organ donors. Every Friday and Sunday of the 40-day Lent period, parishes, including the Madras archdiocese, have been urging the laity to take the initiative. "The Tamil Nadu Bishops' Conference had circulated a pastoral letter in 2007 highlighting organ donation. It says that body donation for medical research is in continuation of the total donation of self by Jesus," says Jesuit Priest Fr. Jerry Rosario of the Dhyana Ashram. Rosario has pledged his organs and has conducted more than 500 blood donation camps across the city. The priest said that the pledge has gained momentum this year because the organs of Fr Manthara of the Coimbatore diocese, who had signed his Living Will during the Holy Week in 2009, were donated after his death on December 28, 2012. "He was the first Catholic priest from Tamil Nadu to donate his body," said the priest. He said that circulars have been issued across parishes focusing on organ donation this year. Last Sunday, the congregation of the Annai Velankanni Church in Sriperambudur was surprised to find their parish hall set up like a hospital, complete with doctors, nurses, and beds. "In my sermon, I urged the congregation to step outside after mass and donate blood and pledge their organs. I told them that God had given them a body and the best use of it was to help save another," says Fr. Edwin Lawrence. His sermon inspired 40 members of the congregation. George Victor, a 35-year-old mechanic at Hyundai Motors, was one of them. "If that simple act of mine can save even one life after my death, then my life is blessed," says Victor. Fr. Rosario said the idea is to make Lent other-centric, rather than self-centric. "That is true sacrifice," he added. Tamil Nadu state cadaver organ transplant convener Joseph Amalorpavanathan said the number of organs donated never matches the need across the world. "The need is 10 times the actual donation," he said. RNI No. 56987/92 Registered No. MH/MR/South-139/2012-14

The Heroics Of Night Watchman

Narendra Modi perhaps won a few chuckles from his ardent supporters when he made that ill advised cricketing comment on the Prime Minister Manmohansingh, whom he likened to a night watchman. He would have done well to take the advice of his friend, Arun Jaitley who may have advised him otherwise. The comment has evoked sharp comments and it would be only appropriate to add a few more. The insinuation was clear that he was referring to the PM holding fort for Rahul Gandhi. It was tasteless. Narendra Modi thinks the Centre is a T-20 game. It is the State that is local 20-20 where you can entertain your local audience with one-liners. The Centre is a Test Match [test of nerves too] involving national and global audience. Perhaps he thought that he could humour the cricket loving billion plus persons but failed. This night watchman, the country s Prime Minister has helmed the Government for almost a decade considering that the NDA regime could just finish one term before it was comprehensively bowled out. The resurgent leader [Namo as he is called] waiting to be named BJP s prime ministerial candidate did not realize this. With all the global problems [from which India could not have been insulated] the Prime Minister has held things together, some major scams notwithstanding. Even as a night watchman his tenure can be likened to the famous night watchman - Australian Jason Gillespie who in that capacity in April 2006 scored an unbeaten 201 runs in a Test Match only to be named as Man of the Match as well as Man of the series. Narendra Modi please note. Perhaps like Gillespie this could be the last innings of Manmohanji. He stood his ground facing a barrage of opposition bouncers. His integrity and commitment have been unparalleled something which the opposition too will vouch for. For someone to complete two terms, using the cricketing jargon, he has carried his bat twice through the innings with responsibility. With no offence meant for the aging BJP statesman and stalwart, Atal B. Vaipaijee, his 13 day stint on his prime ministerial debut, can be actually likened to that of a

night watchman. *****

International Women s Day

This ritual is being meticulously followed in this country even if it has become rhetoric with little or no meaning. A few speeches here and some programmes and even homilies do not really impact the lives of women who are not only dominated by the male fraternity but are actually exploited in many ways. Similarly, a women-centric budget, involving huge financial outlays, also does not touch the lives of the lowest rung of the female population which is about 50%. It needs more than that. The country which was under foreign rule for centuries became free over 65 years back and during these long years the men folk have been emancipated but the women folk which suffered dominance in the past now have to deal with exploitation of the worst kind. The sexual assaults on them are a barometer which showcases the level of exploitation. While the situation is bad across the country, the statistics from Delhi stand out. 181 rape cases in 45 days which works out to 4 a day and one every six hours. And yet the Delhi administration does not look too perturbed. Sheila Dixit is appalled but won t quit. Is she holding fort for her son to hand over the reins? With all the measures put in place since the middle of December 2012 in the Nirbhaya gang rape case, the situation seems to have gone from bad to worse if the above data is any guide. No matter how many measures you put in place, nothing will really improve unless there is a perceptible change in the mindset of the men as a whole. Surprisingly, all MPs, MLAs, Corporators and members of the Panchayats [barring the Khaps at least they are honest] pay lip service when it comes to women empowerment. Do they really work in that direction? The Government has not shown spine in bringing the women s reservation bill in Lok Sabha despite opposition support. It is this mindset that needs to be overhauled if we are to see any difference. The endless debate on the age of consent [16 or 18] and whether the rape should be gender neutral shows the direction in which we are going. There is no will to do it. No matter what, we will not forget to celebrate the International Women s Day, year after year.

A Bitti Truth

The report about the dramatic arrest of the absconding Bitti Mohanty who was convicted of a rape of a foreign national is shocking to say the least. That he jumped the parole and took refuge in a non-descript town in Kerala is a minor thing an what he managed to do in the process is frightening. Convicted when his father B.B. Mohanty was a serving DGP who ultimately had to be suspended when he too went underground and was forced to surrender by the apex court. His tacit connivance with his son was far too evident though he maintained that he had no idea where his son was hiding. All this while the father-son duo were busy manipulating things to give the convict a new identity. In the process, they could deftly forge academic credentials and gain entry for MBA. What is more frightening is the ease with which the voter card was obtained and to cap it all a new passport in the assumed name of Raghav Rajan was issued by the authorities. A serving DGP who was later reinstated and then retired could indulge in such activities what can be expected from an ordinary constable. Actually there are reports of sincere policemen handing over their errant sons to the authorities. The father and son must be punished severely and not confine the sentences to the rule book. The Judges must make an example of this DGP who still feels the arrested man is not his son. He has played these tricks earlier too. If he continues to disown him, it is only fair that both men should undergo DNA test to establish the truth. If men in such high places become suspect, the security of the country could be in grave danger. Is it difficult for such men of authority to help jehadi elements, from countries inimical to India, to obtain legitimacy through forged documents? Could such elements not get into a defence sensitive establishment if Biti could walk into a Public Sector Bank? The Government will have to seriously look into this danger.

Past, Present & Future - All Tense T his is not about gram mar, which is not my forte. Nor is it about glamour. (Hard to believe that he who recently demitted office reverted to wearing red shoes - yuk). This is a hard-boiled reflection on the papacy its past, present and future. As the 115 remaining cardinals in the consistory prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel, we need to push hard for pristine values that should be at the core of the papacy, Catholicism, Christianity and the entire world. It is therefore imperative for every world citizen, not just the Catholics, to reflect deeply, and pray earnestly, for a new pope who should be the Vicar (representative) of Christ, rather than a Shepherd (we are not dumb sheep) or a Roman Pontiff (Rome is just an accident of history, and we have had enough of stiff and starched pontiffs). The only thing I like about Dan Brown s writing is his statement that history is written by the victors . This appears equally true for the history of the papacy. Fortunately, I have with me a book A Compact History of the Popes , written by Rev P.C. Thomas, and published by St. Paul s. I have no reason to doubt its authenticity or bias in favour of the victors, the triumphalistic Catholic Church of the recent past. This article is heavily dependent on the information contained in that book, and is duly acknowledged. Indeed, we need to learn the lessons of the past, lest we commit the same blunders. The history of the papacy, more particularly from the 4th to 16th Centuries, is far from flattering. Papal elections have been fraught with violence, murder, cloak and dagger style intrigue, nepotism, simony, debauchery and all out wars. Blatant evils of the past have, in more recent times, made way for subtler moves that may not attract media attention, or are difficult to prove. In the past, the church and the papacy struggled for survival, against brutal Roman persecution (so why call ourselves Roman at all?) Then there was the evolution of dogma, the Arian and Nestorian heresies. The Canonicity of the Holy Bible (which books or texts were to be decreed as divine inspiration) was next. Then

came the great Schism of the East in the 11th Century, resulting in separation of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The 16th Century saw the revolt of Martin Luther, resulting in the Protestant Reformation. As I said in my earlier article Quo Vadis Mater Ecclesia? , Marxism, Darwinism, the French and industrial revolutions, the printing press, woman s liberation, etc all challenged the Church, and its entrenched teachings. Space constraints prevent me form giving more details, but students of Church History will bear me out, that I am not making wild allegations. The 20th century saw popes like Pius X, Pius XII, John XXIII and Paul VI seeking answers and trying to make the Church relevant to the times resulting in the epochal pronouncements of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). Unfortunately, in the second half of his papacy, John Paul II started retracting into a shell (like a threatened tortoise). Benedict XVI turned the clock back further with his golden crockery (poor butler), red shoes ((poor chambermaid) and jaundiced yellow views (poor us)! I would love to believe that he past is behind us. It isn t. It is still staring us in the face. Hence the need to focus attention on it. This brings us to the present. What do we see around us in both Church and the World? The Catholic Church has already regressed on the wished for renewal of Vatican II. What happened to ecumenism, dialogue with other religions, liberation theology, inculturation, biblical spirituality? All gone down the drain, because of its threat perception . What of the world? From the Cold War and the nuclear arms race, we now face the sceptre of terrorism, most often linked to Islamist groups. America s armed response in Iraq and Afghanistan has only aggravated the situation. With social network-

ing and information technology, there are no more secrets. We don t need butlers to spring leaks. There are enough eyes in the sky and spies on the ground. In world society we see other subtle changes. There is the entire gamut of sexual ethics and norms. There is a growing religious apathy or redundancy, especially among developed or affluent nations. Earlier one prayed to God for rain; now

Chhotebhai one has to just switch on the tube well. There is a growing assertion of women s rights. Oligarchies are now being asked for transparency and accountability. Can the oligarchical, cocooned, defensive Catholic Church remain untouched by what is happening in the world and society? To remain indifferent or distant would be to its own detriment. To the future then. We need a pope who can, not only guide and lead the Catholic Church, but also be a person who can interact with the world (specifically the Islamic world). No clash of civilizations please. We also need a figure who can empathize with what is happening in society, and make religion relevant to the modern human being, including women and youth. This is not a tall order. I often tell people that I follow Jesus not so much because he is the son of God, but because I see him as the perfect human being. I can model my life on his words and actions. I see in him the answer and solution to all my problems. Jesus always referred to himself as Son of Man , Bar-e-nasa in his native Aramaic, or Aam Aadmi in today s parlance. In fact,

in electing a pope? What is the imperative to have a new pope before Palm Sunday or Easter? Why this inordinate haste? Do we doubt God s providence? Can we not learn from the past? I believe that the office of the pope has far reaching consequences, beyond the pale of the visible Catholic Church. This requires time, reflection, prayer and informed debate. In a federal democracy like India we find that after a period of political turmoil or uncertainty President Rule is imposed for a 6 month cooling off period. In like manner I would feel that the collegial Catholic Church needs a 3 to 6 month gestation period. Public opinion must be built up. Sounding boards should be heard. Issues should be raised and analyzed. Wide ranging consultations should be held. A sustained prayer campaign should be launched. Why is the CBCI silent? Only then should a pope be elected. All this may sound like wishful thinking. Today s dreams become tomorrow s reality. So I dare to dream; as the first pope, St. Peter, said we would, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Whether the next pope is white, brown, yellow, black or red (I mean his skin not his shoes) is immaterial, provided he has the 6H formula, and an extended period of discernment is facilitated. Having studied the past, and analyzed the present, I am tense and apprehensive about the future. Many of past papal elections could in no way be attributed to the working of the Holy Spirit. To the contrary. So this time around I sincerely hope and humbly pray that 230 ears (each cardinal presumably has 2) will be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Till then, like an expectant mother, I am tense.

the great mystic St Theresa of Avila in her classic Interior Castle , clearly states that the first room in the castle is the humanity of Jesus. That is the stepping stone to divine intimacy and ecstasy. So what kind of a pope am I looking at? I am for a 6 H Pope - one who is Human, Humble, Honest, Holy, Harmonious and Hardworking. This may sound like stating the obvious. History is eloquent testimony that this has not been so. Sadly, one does not even see these qualities in many of our cardinal electors, bishops or clergy. So where will the pope come from? Who should be Pope? As per Canon Law he is the head of the College of Bishops (Can 331). If he does not have the episcopal character, he is immediately to be ordained bishop (Can 332:1). This clearly indicates that the choice of pope is not restricted to the cardinal electors, or even the bishops. So the net may be cast much wider, beyond the 115 men in the Sistine Chapel. Again, history is replete with instances of men who were not cardinals, or not present in the consistory, being elected popes. In some cases humble monks declined or deferred the election. We have instances were 3 or 4 persons were simultaneously claiming to be the pope. There have been vacancies in the papacy for over 4 years. On the other hand some papal electees actually died * The writer is a lay Catholic before they could be conse- (period) crated. Some popes have had tenures as brief as 10 days. Poll In US: Most Catholics Want Priests To Be Able To Marry United States: Nearly six in ten American Catholics believe it would be a good thing for the Catholic Church if the next pope allows priests to get married, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center in February. The study, which examined the attitudes of American Catholics as they look forward to welcoming a new pope, showed overall that Catholics were divided on the direction they would like their new leader to take the church. Just over half, 51 percent, of American Catholics feel that the new pope should maintain the church's current traditions, while 46 percent feel the church should go in a new direction. Among traditions that Catholics would like to see retired is the required vow of celibacy for priesthood. According to the study, approximately six-in-ten, or 58 percent, of Catholics say it would

be a good thing for the Catholic Church if priests are allowed to marry if they wish to do so. Some 35 percent of Catholics say it is a bad idea. The majority of Catholics supporting the idea attend mass less than once a week. Women were also more supportive of allowing priests to marry than men. Six-in-ten Catholic women agree that allowing priests to marry is a good thing, while just 30 percent believe it would be a bad move. Only 41 percent of Catholic men support the idea, while 30 percent says it would be a bad decision. While there is no generational disparity in the support for allowing Catholic priests to marry, college graduates expressed more support for the idea, 71 percent, than Catholics with less formal education. A majority of Catholics also believe it would be a good thing for the Church if the next pope came from somewhere in the de-

Convention to stress Konkani in liturgy Mangalore: Stressing on the use of vernacular language in liturgical services, Konkani groups in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, are organizing a national convention on the use of the language in liturgy on March 10. The Constitution of India gives all citizens the right to pray in their own mother tongue. Even the Catholic Church, realizing this need at the second Vatican Coun-

cil, had declared that every Catholic has a right to pray in vernacular language, said Eric Ozariom, secretary general of the Jagotik Konkanni Songhotton (JKS). The JKS in association with Catholic Konkani Rakann Sanchalan (Chikmagalur Hassan) would conduct the program. Konkani Catholics in many dioceses in India have

Catholic Group Opposes Civic Body s Demolition Move Mumbai: A Catholic group in Mumbai has threatened street protests if the city s civic body did not take back its decision to raze two structures adjoining a church. If the BMC does not withdraw the notice, we will have no option but take to the streets to protest against its decision, said Gordon D Souza, president of Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS). The BCS reaction came after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to take possession of the land and to demolish parts of two structures a grotto and a building

Sanjivani used as a social service centre- which share a common boundary with the Sacred Heart Church in Santa Cruz (W). The civic body intends to acquire the land to widen the church avenue road from 60 ft to 90 ft. The 77-year-old church is listed as a Grade III heritage structure in the existing heritage list and has been proposed as a Grade II-B heritage structure in the proposed list. Acquisition of the land would result in the demolition of two adjoining structures which have been there for the past 75 years, said Fr. Vernon Aguiar of the church.

veloping world, such as Africa, South America or Asia. Among Catholics who believe the Church should be moving in a new direction, about one in five believe the Church needs to be more modern. Some 15 percent feel the new pope needs to do more to end sex abuse in the church and punish priests who are guilty of the crime. Catholics in this group supporting a new direction for the church also called for women being allowed to serve in the priesthood and gay marriage. They also called for the Church's acceptance of contraceptives. According to Pew Forum, most of the analysis its report is based on telephone interviews conducted Feb. 13-18, 2013, among a national sample of 1,504 adults, 18 years of age or older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

been denied the right to pray in their mother tongue, despite their sizable presence. This is a crucial issue and needs to be addressed immediately, Ozario said. The Chikmagalur diocese, Bangalore archdiocese, Mysore diocese and Shimoga diocese are some examples where a few Konkani liturgical services are held. Konkanis have demanded this right and have even agitated against this. Now to add to their woes, a few language fanatics in Karnataka have even begun attacking people praying in their mother-tongue, other than in Kannada. There have been many such instances of attacks on Konkani and Tamil masses, he said. Ozario said that the resolutions made in the seminar will be sent to Bishops and authorities concerned.

Pauline Sisters and Co-operators Meet for Recollection The Pauline sisters and co-operators had the recollection on Saturday 2nd February 2013 at Pauline convent. Dr. Rev. Fr. Joseph Martin Rector of St. Josephs inter diocesan seminary Mangalore, addressed the gathering. Superior Sr. Prescilla of the community welcomed the Rector Fr. Joseph and introduced him to the gathering. Fr. Started the recollection with a small prayer and a Hymn Abba Father let us be addressing to the heavenly Father surrendering every one present unto to him.. This year 2013 is being dedicated as a year of Faith Fr. Stressed message on father, He regretfully explained how European countries, who have been leading the faith and in the mission of spreading Faith have now seen parting, fading away and churches are empty. Fr. stressed the talk following five points. · Faith is different than a belief. Faith is a complete trust and surrender · Faith is a commitment · Faith is a way of life and not just a passing moment · Faith is a gratuitous gift · Faith involves the whole person and not just one small aspect, the whole person and his live and activities are part of faith. He drew the attention of the gathering towards the strong faith of Abraham towards his master God to the patient of believing, he will

have a Son at his old age Abraham submitted to Gods will without raising a question and took his own son as a sacrifice to God as commanded by God. He also said Faith is not something we feel or touch, but it is something we believe with no hesitation. He invited the attention of the gathering to Mary our heavenly Mother. Though many of the things Mary was told were not understood by her, yet she believed this with strong faith in the heavenly Master. Faith needs to be nourished. Prayer many be small, big, that comes from the heart nourishes the faith. Attending Holy Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Rosary and the religious practices we follow and nourish the faith we have accepted at our Baptism. We should not allow our faith to fade, but build it, and in our children, giving importance to the spiritual activities of our Christian Faith. At the end of the talk Fr. Said this year of faith must bring some change in our life, in our families, in our community, in the Church. We can be little spark of light for other, in order to brighten the life of others. Sr. Marie of the community thanked the Fr. Joseph for his inspiring talk, and for explaining clearly what fith is, and how it is to be nourished. The recollection talk ended with Prayer.

An Attempt To Grab Church s Land In Mumbai

Mumbai: A police case has been filed against a man for trying to grab a plot belonging to a Catholic Church in Bandra in Mumbai. Officials of the Mount Mary Church said the 1,355 square metre barren plot was in its possession for close to four decades. The land has a development potential of around 1000 million rupees. We purchased the property by registered conveyance deeds in the early 1970s. We have our own gates and locks since 1972, said vice rector Aniceto Pereira. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount perched atop Mount Mary owns a few properties around the shrine. On Feb 18, officials said Robin Gonsalves and a builder s representative trespassed the property north of the presbytery building Marianella and placed two security guards. A week later, Gonsalves put up a board on the wall, stating he was in possession of the property. Attempts to file an FIR against him for the blatant

trespass were unsuccessful until the next day when considerable pressure had to be exerted to lodge it, a church official said. The Bandra police confirmed a complaint was filed but refused to provide details. Gonsalves broke open the gates of the Basilica compound, brought in construction material and parked a car on February 27, the complaint said. When the complaint was made, they took away the guards. On March 2, after a great struggle, the police towed away the car. But the building material is still there, said Pereira. For over a century, the Mount Mary Basilica has been a pilgrimage for hundreds and thousands of people every year. In 2004, the present church edifice marked its centenary. It is one of the five leading Marian shrines in the world in terms of the number of pilgrims it attracts. Courtesy:TOI

Convention On Media And Peoples Outrage In New Delhi A two-day national convention on Media and People s Outrage was held at Don Bosco Centre, New Delhi, on March 1 and 2, 2013. The convention was jointly organised by the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA), National Institute of Social Communications, Research and Training (NISCORT) and Media Faculties Network (MFN). Inaugurating the convention, Most Rev. Anil Thomas J. Couto, Archbishop of Delhi, told the participants to be on the lookout for truth in their reporting. Introducing the convention, Fr George Plathottam, Director of NISCORT, stressed the importance of ethics in media and said: Communication deals not so with what you do, but with

what you are. Over 100 journalists, including students of journalism from colleges across the country, participated in the two-day convention. The Convention dwelt at length on current issues like sting operations, paid news, gender violence, corruption, people s movements, etc. and was addressed by senior journalists like Pranjoy Guha Thakurta, Seema Mustafa, Anil Chamadia, AJ Philip, John Dayal, Dominic Emmanuel and Anto Akkara. The convention ended with a convocation ceremony where the students were awarded participation Certificates from the National Institute of Social Communications, Research and Training (NISCORT).

The CSF, PTA, community groups get Shiv Sena Hoarding Off Convent The CSF, PTA and community groups took strong exception to a Shiv Sena hoarding that they forced the police to get down. They took strong exception to a few disgruntled parents using political pressure to register an FIR against Canossa High School at Mahim for charging Rs.2500 per student. The CSF general secretary, Joseph Dias and representatives of the Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum (MCYF), Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) and Catholics for the Preservation of the Faith met with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), school management and students. Below are the findings: 1. The Canossa High School followed the due process for getting approval for funds for maintenance and even went beyond, which is documented. The management involved all the students in the decision making process by highlighting the need at the school assembly, executive and managing committee of the PTA and unanimously got resolutions passed at the general body meeting. 2. The complaints of a handful of parents stems from an earlier meeting where some of them were voted out of the PTA, in the presence of the

education department inspector. These parents then reportedly sought the assistance of a political party and the Forum for Fairness in Education, who advised them to file an FIR at the Mahim police station. 3. The community groups saw that the school was in dire need of maintenance as some classrooms were leaking and the paint had worn off. The management also pointed out that being a girls school there was need for security by raising the walls and installing CCTVs and grills, as there were instances of anti-social elements (drug addicts and robbers) trying to enter in. 4. To better the quality of education, it was also necessary to have a projector, computer and audio-visual room facilities, soundproofing the counseling room and furniture for an additional division. 5. At the general body meeting on 23rd February, the parents and teachers were explained that it would not be possible to have better facilities as the government did not provide for anything beyond the salaries of the staff. 6. Further the school had to in-

cur expenses for other nonsalary items from its internal resources, like water, repairs, security, electricity, etc. and it was not in a position to do so. Hence, if it was not possible to collect funds then the school would not be able to offer these facilities. Such a collection did not come under the ambit of section of 7A and 7AA of the Prohibition of Capitation Fee Act 1987 of the Government of Maharashtra as it was not being taken in return for admissions. 7. The school management said that it was always considerate to deserving cases, even at other times and without discrimination of any kind, especially if the student was being brought up by a single parent. Since it was a girls school, the management and PTA had to take even more care. 8. The community groups noted that it was a minority institution, which gave the trust running it, the right to manage and administer it. But, such interference and threats by a few parents were affecting the children s education and holding the school to ransom.

United Kingdom: The family of an Indian Catholic nurse, who was found hanging after the Duchess of Cambridge radio DJ prank, has been denied legal aid for an inquiry that led to her death. Jacintha Saldanha s relatives, who will struggle to meet the legal bills, fear the move will prevent them finding out the circumstances surrounding her death, English daily The Independent reported. The family is of the view they are being deprived their only opportunity to be assisted in a one-day or halfday hearing the only hearing into what was a very tragic case, said their lawyer John Cooper, QC, who has been working pro bono up to this point. The newspaper reported that the family needs to find thousands of pounds to have any legal representation at the inquest. Without a lawyer, they fear they will struggle to challenge hospital chiefs on the circumstances of Saldanha being put on reception duty

Catholic Nurse s Family Denied Legal Aid For Inquest

to answer calls from the media on the night the Duchess was admitted. It is not just the inquest hearing they need representation for, the family feels they also need to ask if there has been adequate disclosure, he said. The Saldanha family believes the case will require some pressing questions of the hospital which the Coro-

ner cannot ask, he added. Bereaved families are only granted legal aid for inquests in special circumstances, if there is deemed to be a wider public interest or if a relative is required to give evidence. Although they are automatically made interested parties and, as such, can intervene in the proceedings by themselves, the grieving

Saldanha family would face the prospect of having to go head-to-head with experienced lawyers hired by this hospital. They would also have to negotiate the maze of rules which govern Coroner s courts without legal help. The family will be facing well-equipped parties. It is argued that families don t need legal representation in Coroner s courts because they are not adversarial, but that ignores the fact that other parties are represented because they can afford it, said Cooper QC. A Legal Services Commission spokesman said, Inquests are not adversarial as the Coroner is concerned with establishing the facts behind a death. There is the ability for a family or those connected with a deceased to make submissions or put questions to the Coroner, but funding for advocacy at inquest is only granted on an exceptional

St. Joseph The Foster Father Of The Child Jesus

The word Joseph comes from the Hebrew word may God add (Gen.30:24). The Holy family is made up of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. From very early in youth, a person usually learns about the story of Christmas: baby Jesus, and the Holy family. Everything we know about the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus comes from Scripture and that has seemed too little for those who ma5e up legends about him. Who is Saint Joseph? Second only to Mary, Saint Joseph is the person that spent the most earthly hours and days with Jesus. The names of his mother and father have been lost to history unknown. Genealogy research shows he was of the house of David, lineage through Solomon. Also lost to history are the date and place of St. Joseph's birth and the date of his death, so his chronological age is always based upon guesswork. The Christmas story tells us he and Mary had to return to Bethlehem for the census, so we know there is some sort of direct connection to that community, whether at birth or later years.

Words of Our Lady to St. Bridget of Sweden

"St. Joseph was not so reserved and careful in his speech that not one word ever issued from his mouth that was not good and holy, nor did he ever indulge in unnecessary or less than charitable conversation. He was most patient and diligent in bearing fatigue; he practiced extreme poverty; he was most meek in bearing injuries; he was strong and constant against my enemies; he was the faithful witness of the wonders of Heaven, being dead to the flesh and the world, living only for God and for Heavenly goods, which were the only things he desired. He was perfectly conformed to the Divine Will and so resigned to the dispositions of Heaven that he ever repeated" May the Will of God ever be done in me!" He rarely spoke with men, but continually with God, whose Will he desired to perform. Wherefore, he now enjoys great glory in Heaven."

The Humility of Saint Joseph

Humility, as we know, is the truth. It is the virtue that enables us to recognize and act on the recognition of our true relationship to God first, and to other persons. Saint

Family. He did not have identifiable superiors whom he should obey. By divine communication Joseph was told to flee with Mary to Egypt. It was also by divine communication that he was told to return from Egypt to Galille. It was finally by divine communication that Joseph was instructed to live with Jesus and Mary in Nazareth. He obeyed God s will by supernatural instinct. Joseph obeyed not because he was told to but because his mind was always conformed to the mind of God.

The Jeconiah Curse:

The genealogy of Matthew 1, notice one name, Jeconiah (Jechonias), verse 11. There had been a curse on this royal line since the days of Jeconiah. Jeremiah 22:30 reads, Thus saith the Lord: Write this man barren, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for there shall not be a man of his seed that shall sit upon the throne of David, and have power any more in Judah. The Obedience of Saint Joseph

He was obedient in entering into a marriage with the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was obedient when he went to Bethlehem to be registered with Mary, and accepted the humiliation of having Jesus born in a stable cave. He was obedient in taking the Child and His Mother by night and fleeing to Egypt. He was obedient in taking the Christ Child to Jerusalem, as prescribed by the Law, and accepted God s mysterious will when the Child was lost, and God s even more mysterious will when Jesus told Mary that he must be about His Father s affairs even to grievously paining Joseph, His foster father, in order to do the will of His Father. Successful Women

To put it simply: Do women lead differently?

According to Sharon Hadary and Laura Henderson, the answer is an uniquivocal yes. What's more interesting, though, is that they believe that leadership by a woman tends to yield very desirable results--including better odds of business profitability and creation of more businesses that are fundamentally creative and innovative. Hadary and Henderson offer these success strategies for leaders who wish to maximize their strengths with solid business acumen to become a high-potential leader. Own Your Destiny--and Judge Yourself Only by Your Own Metrics One fascinating fact illuminated by this recent research is that women who achieve most are also women who define success in their own terms and integrate achieving high financial goals with creating a business that reflects their passions. Their businesses provide socially responsible products and services, offer opportunities for employees to thrive, make a positive difference in the community, and simultaneously create personal wealth for the owner. Lead Like a Woman Highly successful women are likely to build on their leadership strengths of collaboration, inclusion, and consultation. The result within a company is a culture where everyone's ideas and insights are heard and considered in making decisions and where people feel valued and, therefore, are committed to achieving organizational goals. Numbers Tell Stories. Become a Translator of These Never undermine your credibility as a businesswoman by opening a discussion with a statement about your lack of business acumen. Learn about finance and speak about it in its own language. The women business owners and leaders with the largest, fastest-growing organi-

zations produce more financial reports more frequently than those with slower growing businesses. They identify the key metrics that give them the insights they need and embrace financial knowledge as a major part of their strategic decision-making. Build Exceptional Teams Hire the best from the very beginning and avoid the common mistake of hiring executives from a large company. You need leaders who can work effectively in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial organization. These are people who have the ability to commit to a bigger cause and possess values congruent with yours, curiosity and critical thinking skills, common sense, people and relationship skills, risk taking skills, and respect, admiration, and tolerance for the entrepreneur. Hiring to these characteristics will result in a team that can identify and implement solutions to the evolving challenges of the entrepreneurial business. Nurture Your Greatest Asset: You Avoid becoming so caught up in your work you cannot see the world around you. Focus on integrating all aspects of your life and treat your time and energy as scarce resources--as scarce and valuable as any item in your budget. Establish priorities based on your values and goals and use them to make decisions about accepting requests for your time. Celebrate the Journey Recognize that success is not a one-time shot. It is about composing a life over time. Take the time to enjoy the journey and celebrate the successes along the way.

Inspirations!

Develop A Great Sense of Humor

Bottled water is much more likely to be contaminated or become a source of infection than tap water, experts warn. makers of bottled water are only required to undertake monthly testing at source. Once filled and sealed, a bottle of water might remain in storage for months before it is sold.

I have been practicing an interesting exercise every morning that a good friend put me onto recently. I wake up and the first thing I do is laugh. It starts off forced, a

Safety: Bottled water is not legally required to meet the same stringent standards as municipal drinking water. Transparency: Bottled water testing information is not made available to the public like tap water testing is. Cost: Bottled water costs 1000 times more than tap water! The average price of a glass of tap water is Rs, 0.05! The average price of bottled water is Rs, 12 Water Usage: 3 Litre of water is used in the production of each litre of bottled water. Conservation: Mass water taking for the production of bottled water depletes resources for future generations. Environment: Plastic bottles take 200+ years to disintegrate. Many municipalities send their plastic bottle waste to landfills not recycling centres. Health: The evidence of health risks from certain plastics is increasingly appearing in established, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Stop Privatization: Bottled water providers use our water supply to achieve their primary goal profits. Community Support: Unlike private corporations, municipalities provide a safe and regulated service for the benefit of their communities. Source: Bottled water that is labeled demineralized or distilled is usually tap water. Aquafina and Dasani are two examples.

mere raspy chuckle, until I tap into something deep within and start to crack up. My roommates think I am nuts and they get pissed off that I wake them up like this all the time, but I think I get off on that and just laugh harder! Sometimes I completely lose it and they can t help but join me. This exercise has made it easier for me to laugh throughout my day and also I come up with funny stuff on the fly more often. If you don t mind looking like a total lunatic, give it a try! Generally, a sense of humor is absolutely vital to your own well-being. Sci-

ence has shown that it provides a unique internal massage that actually cleanses and relaxes your organs. Explains why you always feel GREAT after a good laugh! Some people are born with a killer sense of humor... others have to learn. The point is that it can be developed! Watch lots of funny movies, especially the old Eddie Murphy stand-up flicks or any other great comedian. Notice how what you say is not nearly important as how and when you say it. Also notice how the most trivial things are usually hilarious! Comedians are just very

Transporting the bottles and keeping them cold also burns fossil fuels, which give off greenhouse gases. And groundwater pumping by bottled-water companies draws heavily on underground aquifers and harms watersheds, Water aside, the plastic used in single-use bottles can pose more of a contamination threat than the water. Bottled water doesn't have to list the source, purification methods, or chemical pollutants on the bottle, so there's no telling what you're drinking. The bottles are also unhealthy. The chemical phthalate is added to the plastic to make it less brittle. When the plastic is heated (like in your car on a hot day), the chemical leaches into your water. Drinking this chemical has been linked to reproductive issues, liver problems, and an increased risk for certain types of cancer.

observant people who can put a clever spin on what they see. They are magicians who make us see the world in a different light. A funny person is sharp witted because he is AWARE of his surroundings. Pay attention to every detail and let that attention burn with quiet intensity. You will start to notice all sorts of odd things once you make this a habit. Another way to work on the funny is to hang out with a hilarious group of people. Think back to the last time you laughed so hard you were in pain. Who were you with at the time? THOSE are the people you want to chill with! Furthermore, if you are looking for inspiration from the professionals, there is an excellent book out by Melvin Helitzer called "Comedy Writing Secrets." I highly recommend this book if you are interested in improving your humor skills. Of course, if you have confidence, a good sense of humor, and you love to laugh, there are very few girls in this world that will be able to resist you.
