In an education journal I was reading recently, I came across an article with the title: “Rethinking Gifted Education”. The article commenced by saying that according to new research and thinking, current approaches to gifted education may be in need of change. What is becoming clear is that academic talents can wax and wane. A child identified as gifted at age 8 can be performing in the middle of their group later in their schooling. It has also been noted that ‘giftedness’ doesn’t seem to be innate and immutable, in fact it can be lost or nurtured and taught.
