A number of years ago I heard a visiting academic from Canada, Gerry Cleveland, speak about the importance of language development in children. In addition to an extensive background in education, what I found particularly interesting, was that prior to entering education, he had worked with the New York Police Department. During his time as a police officer, he came to realize that many of the problems he was dealing with on the streets could only be addressed through education and hence, this became the motivation for him to move into the teaching profession.
