During my first appointment to a school leadership position as a deputy, I had the privilege of working with an outstanding Principal. One of the things I recall most about him was the ‘acid’ test he would apply consistently when we were making decisions. He would always ask, “Is this what is best for the students in our school”. His commitment was to the learning of students, and everything that was happening in the organization was clearly focused on it. He impressed upon me the need to make sure everyone was clear on the ‘core business’ of the school.
