BUYER’S PREMIUM The purchase price payable by the Purchaser shall be the total of the final bid price PLUS A PREMIUM OF SEVENTEEN PERCENT (17%) on any individual lot in the amount up to and including $1,000,000; TWELVE PERCENT (12%) on any individual lot on the amount in excess of $1,000,000. This premium is in addition to any commissions or other charges payable by the consignor. Auction The art illustrated in this catalogue will be offered for sale on April 8, 2022 by Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC on premises at 7176 Main Street, Scottsdale, Arizona. Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC is not responsible for any postponements of the sale due to conditions out of their control. Telephone Bidding As a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the sale, a telephone and order (absentee) bid service will be offered as staff and time allow. Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC shall not be responsible for any errors or omissions or failure to execute such bids. The following are Procedures, Terms and Conditions on which all such Property listed is offered for sale by Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC as agent for various owners or other Consignors: 1. Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC reserves the right to withdraw Property at any time before or at the sale and shall have no liability for such withdrawal. 2. All Property will be sold “AS IS”. With respect to each lot of Property, Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC does not make any guarantees, warranties or representations, expressed or implied, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, the correctness of the catalogue or the authenticity or description of the Property, its physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions, literature or historical relevance. No statement, anywhere, whether oral or written, whether made in the catalogue, an advertisement, a bill of sale, a salesroom posting or announcement, or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. In no event shall Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC be responsible for genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin or condition of the purchased Property and no verbal statements made regarding the Property either before or after the sale of the Property, or in any bill of sale, invoice or catalogue or advertisement or elsewhere shall be deemed such a guarantee of genuineness, or authenticity. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if within ten (10) calendar days after the purchase of any lot of Property, the Purchaser provides an opinion by a recognized authority on the artist and gives notice in writing to Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC that the lot is not authentic, and returns the purchased lot to Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC, within ten (10) days of its purchase in the same condition as when sold, then Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC will refund the full purchase price to the Purchaser. It shall be in the sole discretion of Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC as to whether the opinion provided by the Purchaser is an opinion by a recognized authority on the artist. 3. Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC and/or Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bids. The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer shall be the Purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the Auctioneer will have absolute and final discretion to either determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the Property item in dispute. After the sale, Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC’s record of final sale shall be conclusive.

4. At the fall of the Auctioneer’s hammer, the Purchaser shall (a) be acknowledged by bidder number by the auctioneer, (b) pay the hammer price and a buyer’s premium as outlined above. In addition, Purchaser may be required to sign a confirmation of purchase. All sales are final with no exchanges or returns. 5. Unless exempted by law, the Purchaser will be required to pay any and all state and local tax pertaining to sales (sales tax, transaction privileged, etc...). It is the Purchaser's responsibility to pay any applicable use tax imposed by their state of residence on the total purchase price. In the event that sales tax has not been included in the invoiced amount and it is subsequently determined that Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC was required to collect sales tax in connection herewith, Purchaser shall reimburse Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC upon demand for any sales tax (or equivalent) accessed or due as a result of goods or services proveded by Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC hereunder, unless Purchaser provides Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC evidence of exemption from such taxes. 6. Terms for all purchases will be cash, bank wire, check, or credit card (VISA/MasterCard/American Express) with settlement and payment due in full the day of the sale unless otherwise arranged. All monies shall be made payable to Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC. At the discretion of Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC, payment will not be deemed to have been made in full until funds represented by checks have been collected or the authenticity of bank or cashier’s checks has been confirmed. An additional 3% will be charged on all credit card payments. 7. No item of Property may be paid for or removed from Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC during the sale. After the sale has been completed and after the purchase price has been paid in full, Property must be removed from the saleroom at the Purchaser’s expense not later than three business days following the sale. Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC will, as a service to Purchasers, arrange to have Property packed, insured and shipped, all charges at the expense and entire risk of Purchaser. 8. Some items of Property may be offered subject to a “reserve” or confidential minimum price below which the item will not be sold. In such instances, Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC may implement the reserve by bidding through the Auctioneer on behalf of the Consignor. In no event shall the reserve exceed the low estimate in the catalogue. 9. Neither Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC, nor Auctioneer, nor Consignor make any representations whatsoever that the Purchaser of a work of art will acquire any reproduction rights thereto. 10. These Conditions of Sale and any other applicable conditions, as well as the Purchaser’s and Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC’s rights and obligations herein shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Arizona. If these conditions are not complied with by the Purchaser, Scottsdale Art Auction, LLC may, in addition to other remedies available by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the Purchaser liable for the total purchase price stated on the Confirmation of Purchase Invoice, either (a) cancel the sale and retain as liquidated damages any and all payments made by the Purchaser or (b) resell the Property privately or at public auction on three days’ notice to the Purchaser for the payment of any deficiency in the purchase price and all costs including handling charges, warehousing, the expense of both sales, the commissions, reasonable attorneys’ fees, any and all other charges due and incidental damages. 11. Biding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, by phone, by Internet, by absentee bid, or through a representative. 12. In most instances, sculpture measurements do not include base. In measurements for two dimensional art, height precedes width and does not include frame. 13. 36 James Boren 1921-1990 Children of Las Norias Watercolor 19 x 26 inches Signed lower right and dated 1975 Estimate: $1,500 - 2,500 During his life, James Boren was widely admired by his peers and collectors of his work, but the painter could have not foreseen the path that led him to that point. In his youth he sought out training to become an illustrator, an endeavor put on hold by the outbreak of World War II, during which Boren served as a Marine. After the war, he completed school and began teaching, followed by a stint starting in 1965 as the first art director at the Cowboy Hall of Fame, now the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, in Oklahoma City. Within three years, Boren’s cowboy paintings were a hit and he quickly drew the attention of the still-young Cowboy Artists of America, who inducted him into the group in 1968. He was a prominent fixture in the group until his death in 1990.

After the war, he returned home and worked professionally in his home country as well as abroad. He also started publishing his own art books, including Peter McIntyre’s New Zealand, Peter McIntyre’s Pacific and Peter McIntyre’s West, as well as others. His work was respected in the United States, but McIntyre was very well known in New Zealand, where he’s still regarded as a national treasure even today.

Harvey, turned his attention to the Lone Star State in Texas Sunrise, a painting that shows the peace and majesty of the early morning light rising over distant hills. “When I painted pure landscapes years ago, I tended to show them during bright daylight conditions,” the artist writes in The Golden Era: The American Dream—G. Harvey. “Over the years, I’ve come to enjoy the moodier times of the day, particularly twilight—those brief minutes when the afterglow of sunset reflects off mountains or in the mists giving a scene an almost ethereal mystery.” Harvey was born in Texas Hill Country, not far from the start of the famous Chisolm Trail. His grandfather had been a cowboy and was one of the last to drive cattle across the Red River, and his father spent most of his life on ranches—between the two of them, there was never a dull moment during storytime at the Harvey household. For the artist, born Gerald Harvey Jones, he knew he wanted to be an artist early, and after earning a degree in industrial arts he started teaching and focusing on his own art on the side. He entered his first major show in 1965 and promptly won the top award. His career would stretch another 50 years.

Jackson would know this firsthand after running away from home at 14 years old to work on a Wyoming ranch. The artist had a colorful and at times troubled life—he was severely wounded in the Pacific Theater during World War II, was friends with Jackson Pollock, had six wives and was thrown out of the Cowboy Artists of America–and is highly regarded for his paintings and bronzes.

As a teenager he remembers James Boren coming into his family’s service shop with a flat tire. It took all his courage to muster out a word to the well-known artist. Later, after turning his attention completely to art, he would have a chance to study under Boren and also another local art hero, Melvin Warren. Both artists would guide Grelle forward until he was on his feet and selling art. His rise from there was fast, but also measured—Grelle let his work grow steadily and organically. By 1995, he was voted in the Cowboy Artists of America, and he has served in the group ever since, including in major periods of growth and development. Recently, in both 2017 and 2021, Grelle held two monumental solo shows at Legacy Gallery that further cemented his place among the greats in Western art.

Cannon was surely set to become an iconic Southwestern modernist had he not died at the age of 31 in an early morning car accident near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1978. The Kiowa painter, and Vietnam veteran with the 101st Airborne, was known widely for his unique views of Native American life, as well as his vivid use of color. This woodblock version of His Hair Flows Like a River is almost identical to a larger painted version with a light-purple background completed in 1977. “…Color is the most immediate of the artist’s devices, and it reaches straight into the viewer’s mind, connecting with all emotions: fear, joy, pleasure, pain, and mixtures of these particular emotions,” writes Rosemary Ellison in T.C. Cannon: He Stood in the Sun. “T.C.’s art is very beguiling and very seductive because of his use of color.”

He would even invent the technique he called “cloisonnism,” where blocks of jewel-like color were outlined in black. A peaceful quality is ever present in the works of Martin Grelle. He rarely paints action scenes, and even rarer still are paintings showing battles, death and violence. The Native Americans in his works are certainly capable of leaping into action at a moment’s notice, but the artist allows them restful innocence as they ride through their lands, track meat for the tribe, trade supplies with white settlers or give offerings in ceremonies big and small. It’s those quiet moments that allow Grelle opportunities to tell deeper stories about his subjects, particularly in a piece like Wolves at Blacktail, which conveys a lot with very little. “That’s what I’ve been focusing on is storytelling. There are great stories everywhere, you just have to find them,” Grelle says in the October 2021 issue of Western Art Collector. “For me, it all comes down to strength and honor. The Native Americans I paint were all about strength and honor, but also about compassion, even if they were living in times of violence or fighting. There was order in their lives, from the interactions between men and women, to children and grown-ups—it is all very interesting to me, and very admirable. These were times of horrible conflict, but they responded to it exceptionally, even amid toil and hardship.”

Although he was born in Texas, the cowboy way of life did not hit him all at once, but research and copious amounts of reading allowed him to see the historical importance of cowboys within American history. Later, after molding some of his daughter’s clay from school, he realized he could make a go at art professionally. By 1965 he was in the Cowboy Artists of America. He was known for producing a number of bronze busts of Western figures of all types.

The leader and warrior, almost always shown with a long lance with dangling feathers, was a favorite subject of both George Catlin and Karl Bodmer. Four Bears was known as a fierce fighter and had violent interactions with the Cheyenne, Sioux, Arikara and Assiniboine. He painted what he was seeing in front of him. He painted the present. Swanson also painted children for much of his career, everyone from teens charged with watching flocks of sheep down to toddlers scampering around their parents feet in their traditional little outfits. “Children reveal the beauty, tradition and promise of the Navajo tribe,” Ray Swanson wrote in The Art of Ray Swanson: Celebrating People and Lifestyles.

Where many artists started in the east and gradually worked their way west, Melvin Warren had an opposite approach: He was born in California and then moved to Arizona and New Mexico before finally settling in Texas’ famous Hill Country. After World War II, during which Warren served in the Air Force, the artist began pursuing art full time as he painted various aspects of the Southwest, including cattle drives, scenes from Mexico and along the border, and his incredible nocturne works. Warren, whose works were collected by President Lyndon B. Johnson, was elected into the Cowboy Artists of America in 1968. He served in the group until his death in 1995.

At just 22 years old, Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) opened up a lithography shop in New York City. Business was almost immediately booming as the young artist produced hand-colored prints showing American life in many forms, from bucolic farm scenes on the East Coast to daring adventures into uncharted lands on the western frontier. As the shop grew in popularity, Currier would eventually bring in his younger brother Charles to help fill orders and organize printings. By 1957, James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) was made a partner after serving as the firms’ accountant (and Charles Currier’s brother-in-law). The images were cheaply produced, ensuring their wide popularity, and they were of a high quality, which made them collectible—it was common to see Currier & Ives prints hanging in many households during the second half of the 19th century. The works were done on stone printing plates that took considerable time to finish, and then each print was handpulled and hand-colored by Currier & Ives’ staff of in-house artists. The imagery for the prints was obtained from many of the major artists of the period, including Eastman Johnson, James E. Butterworth, George Inness, George Catlin and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait. By the time Currier & Ives closed up shop in 1907, the company had produced more than 7,000 images, many of them showing various aspects of the American experience.

George Catlin first began exploring the American wilderness and documenting Native Americans in 1830 on a journey up the Missouri River with William Clark, of Lewis & Clark fame. The trip would prove to be a profound experience for the 34-year-old artist. Eight years later he would return to the East Coast with an explosive body of work that would stun the world. Many of his most famous works, including several of these prints showing buffalo hunters, would appear in his North American Indian Portfolio: Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America. Catlin would write in the introduction: “Man, in the vast plains and mountains of America, has been found, as in other parts of the world, maintaining his ascendency over all the beasts of the forest, by the aid of his reason and invention, which have enabled him to construct his weapons, and to employ the means to convert the various animals to his aid and his subsistence in the numerous modes represented in the following pages.” Of particular note in this grouping is Attack of the Grizzly Bear, which was originally Plate 19 in the North American Indian Portfolio. Catlin writes: “From the entirely intractable and ferocious nature of this animal, which has defeated every effort to tame or domesticate it; and from its enormous strength, and the length and sharpness of its claws, which are used like those of the tiger, to seize and tear its prey, it is more feared than any other animal of the American prairies; and hunters… generally evade a scuffle with it, except when, as in the present instance, there are a number present, mounted and armed with the lance.” 192 George Catlin 1796-1872 Collection of three lithographs Sight size 14 x 19 inches each Estimate: $1,000 - 2,000 Ball Play
