Feeding is Fun at the San Diego Food Bank “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” – Someone Famous, 1910

D

o you know who said that? I’ll give you a hint, she was a mother. Still don’t know? I promise to tell you by the end of this article. The brainy woman who made that statement devoted her life to serving others, but anyone can make a difference in their community by volunteering. Right here in San Diego, one of the most well-established community service organizations is the San Diego Food Bank which has been providing food to hungry citizens since 1977. They don’t feed just one person, or even a hundred people, they feed way more. In fact, every month the San Diego Food Bank feeds 370,000 people and last year they distributed over 22 million pounds of food! Guess who sorts all that food? Volunteers!

Do the math: An elephants can

eat over 400 pounds of food a day. So, 22 million pounds of food is enough to feed an adult elephant for 150 years!

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Martin Luther King SAN DIEGO FOOD BANK WANTS YOU When food is donated, it is taken to the Food Bank’s warehouse in Miramar, where good-hearted volunteers separate and package the goods for distribution. Each volunteer shift at the warehouse is three hours long and can include a variety of helpful tasks such as: • Cleaning fresh produce • Boxing and labelling donations • Preparing meal packages for special programs like the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program Every weekend, Food 4 Kids supplies bags of food to children from low-income homes that don’t have enough food available outside of school. Carmen Fuentes, whose sister participates in the program said, “It hurts my heart when they say they are hungry and they don’t have anything to eat...so, we always had the backpack with us.” You can help feed kids just like you who are

value of a volunteer’s time is $15.39 per hour. That’s $6.39 more than California’s minimum wage!

going hungry. How? By volunteering! Keep in mind that you must be at least six years old to volunteer, and if you are under 15, you must have an adult with you. But for every adult, up to ten kids can volunteer, so the Food Bank is a perfect group activity! 28,000 people volunteer at the Food Bank every year. Can you make it 28,001?

FOR THE COMMUNITY AND THE FUTURE As it turns out, working for others is good for you! Whether you need to fulfill a school requirement, want to meet new people, or are interested in combating hunger, the San Diego Food Bank would love to have you. Plus, Mother Teresa would be proud of your efforts to help feed thousands of people in need (she’s the one who said the famous quote too!).

Salads

Your New Favorite Food How to (really!) make salads the best meal of the day

B

y now you’ve probably heard that salads are just about the best meal choice you can make for your health. They’re colorful, packed full of fresh enzymes and nutrient-rich veggies, and the fiber in salads is great for your digestive system. All of that does not mean, however, that the average salad is super easy to choose - especially when other temptations like pizza and fast food are around us all of the time. To give your salad extra appeal, use these tips and kick-start your craving for leafy greens.

ADD A HEALTHY CRUNCH By adding a snap of crunch to the mix, you can change the mouth-feel of your salad entirely. If you’re thinking ‘croutons’, you’re right - but there are a lot more ways to add a crunch to your salad than the average crouton, and they’re a lot more creative and healthy, too: Aw, Nuts Try tossing a bunch of nuts – like pecans or walnuts - in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees, then drizzling in a light coating of honey. Let cool and, voila! You have fresh, lightly-glazed roasted nuts for salads that will last you all week! Chickpeas, Please! Chickpeas (or garbanzo beans) turn into perfect little croutons after a few minutes in the oven. Just dry canned chickpeas and put them on a baking sheet, roll with a bit of oil (preferably olive oil or coconut) and season. After 30-40 minutes in a 400 degree oven, the result is a crunchy snack that can be enjoyed either alone or as the perfect salad topper.

6

DON’T FORGET THE FAT! Healthy fats and Omega 3 oils do a world of good for your health, from boosting your immune system to protecting your heart - and keeping your skin glowing and acne-free. As an addition to salad, healthy fats can also help you stay full long after you’ve finished eating. Try adding them as: Toppings Sprinkle some hearty walnuts or flax seeds on top of your salad. Make sure you grind flax just before you use it - the omega oils die quickly when they’re pre-ground. Protein Adding a filet of grilled or baked salmon is a great way to amp up the staying power, and health, of your salad. Not a fan of fish? No problem. Eggs enhanced with omega 3 are just as healthful. Dressing Olive and coconut oils are great choices for a healthy dressing base. While the oils aren’t high in omega 3, olive oil packs a punch of healthy fats like monounsaturated fatty acids, which is great for fighting inflammation and heart disease. And coconut oil is the best source of healthy medium chain fatty acids.

RETHINK THE BOWL If your only chance of getting in a salad is by making it at home, then simple logistics can be the main barrier between you and your healthy lunch. To make your salad more on-the-go friendly, consider shaking it up by layering it in a mason jar: The result is pretty, appetizing, and it travels well! Here’s a simple recipe from MyFoodAndOtherStuff.com to get you started: In a one quart mason jar, layer: • 2/3 cup of strawberries, sliced • 3 cups of spinach leaves • 1/3 cup of walnuts, chopped • 1-1/2 ounces crumbled goat cheese or feta Add 2-3 tbsp. balsamic vinaigrette (olive oil base!) when you’re ready to eat. Enjoy!

Being an Allergy Ally: Peanut Allergies

O

dds are that you know someone with a food allergy. That’s because 1 in every 13 children in America have one! That’s an immense statistic and the numbers keep on growing!

BAD PEANUT! The foods people are most commonly allergic to are nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, and the peanut is one of the most common: More than 3 million people in the U.S. reportedly have peanut allergies, and anaphylactic shock from eating peanuts is the most common cause of food-related death!

BE A FRIEND Not only is having a food allergy dangerous, it can also be alienating, as the fear of having a reaction can keep someone from trying new experiences or leaving home. That’s why being a good friend to someone with allergies is vital. It’s good to understand and support friends. Follow these tips to be an ally to those around you with allergies, giving them confidence and safety and helping them in their quest to stay reaction-free.

WHAT IS AN EPI-PEN? An Epi-Pen is a pre-filled automatic injection that’s easy to use. Using it can save someone’s life!

How to Be an Allergy-Ally Know Symptoms Specific symptoms vary from person to person, and can include a runny nose, hives, itching and tingling around the mouth, plus bowel problems. If your friend’s mouth or tongue begins to swell, call 911 and locate an Epi-Pen immediately, as their airways may become closed off.

Know Where to Locate an Epi-Pen If your friend has a severe allergy, then they should always be carrying an Epi-Pen. Ask your friend where they keep it and to train you how to use it. The Epi-Pen is often a life-saver.

Ask Specifics About Food Make sure you know exactly what to look out for in your friend’s food; ingredients like peanuts can often be hidden. It can be embarrassing to constantly ask the same questions about ingredients in public, so back her up and make her feel supported.

Help Assess If your friend mentions symptoms that sound like an allergic reaction, don’t be afraid to tell her that’s what you think. When people are stressed, they don’t always make the best decision for themselves – giving your honest opinion will help.

Don’t Share Food Unless you’re absolutely positive that your food is allergen-free, do not tempt them with sharing!

Wash Your Hands After Eating Because some allergies react through touch, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after eating. That way, if you choose to have a meal that your friend can’t, you won’t endanger her.

They’re nuts! Well, actually they’re not… Peanuts are not actually nuts! They’re from the legume family, like beans. Instead of growing on trees like their name-counterparts, they grow from seeds into pods underground. Bet you didn’t know that!

What can a peanut allergy look like? A PERSONAL ACCOUNT Lana Schissel, founder and owner of Create Community Dresses in New York, has this story to share about having a surprise allergic reaction: “When I was 13, I was on a bike trip from my camp in New Hampshire to Vermont, and it’s a tradition that we stop at the Ben and Jerry’s factory to get Vermonsters for the boys and girls (20 scoops of ice cream, 2 brownies, 2 chocolate chip cookies, and a bunch of glorious toppings with whipped cream). “The counselors knew about my, and another girl’s, peanut allergy, and they were very careful not to get any ice cream flavors with nuts. They unfortunately weren’t so careful with the toppings, however, and thus Reese’s Pieces M&Ms were chucked on top of that monster – which have peanuts as one of their ingredients! “We had been riding for 3 days and DUH looking forward to it - but my first, enthusiastic bite was a peanut-buttery mess! “Nutty fact - peanut butter is often worse than peanuts alone because it has the oils which make it stronger than peanuts themselves! “I immediately ran to the bathroom and started spitting out my ice cream, splashing water into my mouth and trying to get the peanut butter out from between my teeth as my mouth began to itch. My friend Kayla - with the other peanut allergy - realized what was happening and ran to the bathroom too, spitting out ice cream and sloshing water in her mouth! “They had to take us to the hospital right away (no more ice cream!) where we were treated with antihistamines. After being released from the hospital, Kayla and I were dropped right back off in the same spot, and were still forced to bike 30 miles all the way to the next camp site! Without the fuel of ice cream! “If only someone had noticed those Reese’s Pieces…”

Dear Priority Girl, This girl Meghan and I used to be really close, but now we are enemies. We had a really big fight after I yelled at her for saying something mean to a boy in class. Now, when we see each other at school, she glares at me and my heart pounds because I’m so angry to see her. How do I survive at school with an enemy? – RACHAEL, 10

Hi Rachael, Friendships are very delicate, and sometimes one fight can blow up badly like yours did. The real question is: do you want to be Meghan’s friend again or not? If she was saying mean things about someone, it sounds like she

– JOSLYN, 11

– PRIORITY GIRL

Hi Joslyn, I’m so sorry your friend has been ignoring you lately. Sometimes, when people start getting crushes they can lose focus on the other people in their life. It sounds like having a crush is very new for Sarah, and it’s easy to be distracted by things that are new and exciting. I have a feeling that Sarah doesn’t know exactly how you are feeling. The next time you two walk to the bus together, try being honest and letting her know you’ve been missing her, and ask if she can hang out on a certain day. If she doesn’t respond the way you’d like, then try giving her some time. Nothing stays new forever, and she’ll likely be back to her old self soon, even if she keeps liking boys. – PRIORITY GIRL

Drum Trivia

WHO IS THIS GIRL?! Hillari Hampton is a San Diego native that has been singing since she was very small, but has also been playing the drums since she was 8. At the grand old age of 11, she has performed many times – including school variety shows, with a band, at the Kids Expo in Del Mar, and even at The Hard Rock Café!

LET’S QUESTION HER! We sat down with Hillari and asked her all about her music career.

This School Rocks!

If you want to play an ins trument or love singing like Hi llari, make sure you check out som e lessons in your area. One good place to try is The School Of Ro ck: ww w.sandiego.schoolo frock.com

Rick Allen, famed drummer from rock band Def Leppard, played the drums – even though he only had one arm after an accident in 1984! An old slang term for a drum-kit was ‘Suitcase’!

WHAT IS THE FIRST SONG THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER SINGING?

“Single Ladies” by Beyonce, when I was 4. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO PLAY THE DRUMS?

The drums looked cool and I thought I wanted to learn how to play them.

Ever since the 1920s, brushes have often been used instead of drumsticks to get that softer sound – especially in jazz and blues bands.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVORITE PERFORMANCE?

My very first talent show at school. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PERFORMANCE?

I don’t dislike any of them. Performing is fun! DO YOU GET NERVOUS WHEN YOU ARE PERFORMING?

No, I just pretend like no one is there and sing or drum my heart out. WHEN DO YOU PRACTICE?

I sing in the car every morning on the way to school. Plus, I take drum and singing lessons once a week. I’m supposed to practice drums everyday too. IF YOU AREN’T A SINGER OR A DRUMMER WHEN YOU GROW UP, WHAT WILL YOU BE?

Fashion designer. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT?

Right now I am playing a lot of Joan Jett and getting ready to perform. I’m also thinking about auditioning for a new band.

KEY INFO STAGE NAME: “Hollywood Hill” or “Diva Couture” AGE: 11 INSTRUMENT: Singer/Drums FAVORITE BANDS: Beyonce, Whitney Houston,

Amy Winehouse, Ellie Goulding, Imagine Dragons, The Beatles INSPIRATION: Whitney and Beyonce

Hillari has been recognized on the streets of San Die go: “Hey! Aren’t you th at girl that plays the drums?”

Okay, now we like to think that we keep you entertained with brilliant articles and awesome photographs, but we also know that amongst our readers are some talented aspiring photographers!

COOL CLICKS

W

e‘d love to see some of your best shots, and so we’re running a monthly themed competition to take a look at your photography! Each month, we’ll

select a few of your photos, and publish them in Priority Girl magazine, and on the website, alongside the winning picture, choosing the ones which we feel best capture the theme in your own unique and inspiring way. This month, the theme is ‘Favorite Book, Favorite Place’, and we’ve really enjoyed seeing your take on this theme. There’s nothing better than curling up with a book and losing yourself inside the pages. Actually…there is something better, getting a photo of it, and sending it to us! And remember – this is your take on the theme, so get creative! Get inspired by the fabulous photos on ‘Favorite Book, Favorite Place’, and start thinking about sending in your shots to be included in next month’s magazine all about being a good sport!

14

First up, we have a peaceful portrait of Gabriela, age 7, lost in her current favorite book ‘Miranda To The Rescue’, snuggled in her favorite corner of the sofa. The photograph was taken by Gabriela’s brother, Isaac, who has just been given his first camera! Great shot, Isaac!

Grace, age 10, took this shot in her neighbor’s garden. “I really, really want to keep chickens, and until my parents agree, I read ‘Chicken Coups For The Soul’ in my friend’s garden. I have my feet up and love watching the little fluffy chicks racing around their mothers!” she said.

Thanks to everyone who contributed this month – it’s great fun looking through your fantastic work! We have lots of exciting themes coming up over the next months, but feel free to get in touch and suggest a photographic theme – you’ll get a special mention in Priority Girl if we use it!

Next month’s theme is ‘Be A Good Sport!’ and we’d love to see

you maybe taking part in your main event, supporting your favorite team, or maybe meeting a sports hero! Send your original work (by hash tagged photos on Twitter, Instagram, shareable link or JPEG), by September 10, 2015, to photocontest@prioritygirlmagazine.com with Photography Competition – ‘Be A Good Sport’ in the subject. Please add your name, age and email address to contact you if you’re a winner. Give us a line or two about yourself and why you’ve chosen that particular shot. 15

Dreamcatchers, Crayon Art, Letters and Bracelets Arts and crafts are always good for clearing your mind and having fun. Here are some great ideas to do with friends, family, or just by yourself! • After the entire circle is complete, tie it off. • Next, you want to make the strings inside of the circle. Do this by making any type of pattern you want inside of the circle, it can be a criss-cross, star, flower - whatever your heart desires. You can add beads or multiple color strings here too if you want. • After the base of your dreamcatcher is all done, you can begin to add the accessories. You can hang feathers, beads, whatever you like! • After you’ve finished adding the final touches to your dreamcatcher, you’re done! I’m sure it looks amazing!

Dreamcatcher

DIFFICULTY: 5/10

Dreamcatchers are in right now and not too hard to make. They say that with a dream catcher, if you hang it over your bed at night then it will bring you good dreams! They are also really stylish and make a great accessory or gift. WHAT YOU NEED:

• A metal circle (you can find it at a craft store) • Colored feathers • Colored string • Beads INSTRUCTIONS:

Crayon Art

Another fun and creative project that can be done individually or with friends is the crayon art project. This is where you attach crayons to a canvas and melt them into a work of art. This project is actually very easy to do and so much fun!

(Remember to always have a parent around if you need help using scissors or tying the

16

DIFFICULTY: 3/10

strings off.)

WHAT YOU NEED:

• Take your metal circle and begin wrapping whatever colored string around it you want. You can be creative here and do multiple colors or just one, it is completely up to you.

• Crayons • Blank canvas (any size) • Blow dryer

INSTRUCTIONS: (Please make sure a parent is around to assist with using the blow dryer.)

• Place your canvas on either a tarp or a garbage bag - just in case a crayon rolls away! • Make sure the canvas is at an angle so when the crayons melt the colors flow downwards. • Lay your canvas down and glue the crayons onto it. Keep the hot colors together - like red and orange, and the cool colors together - blue and green. • Once you have your crayons lined up, begin to blow dry. You want to start on one crayon and let it begin to melt before moving onto the next one. Don’t continually move the blow dryer back and forth. • Soon the colors will begin to melt, creating a beautiful piece of art. • Allow time for the artwork to dry. • Once dry, hang it on your wall, stand back, and admire!

glitter and make them really shine. You can glue flowers all around them. These letters represents you, so be creative in any way you fancy! • Once the letters are complete, hang them in your room right above your bed with pride!

Stylish Bracelets

DIFFICULTY: 2/10

Everyone likes wearing a stylish bracelet and what better way to show your fashion off than making your own? It’s extremely simple and can make a great gift for friends and family. They will love seeing your creative side! WHAT YOU NEED:

Letter Decoration

DIFFICULTY: 1/10

Want to have your own little space that screams “ME!”? Well, a great way to do that is by grabbing a couple of wooden letters that are the initials of your name and decorating them to match your personality. This is a fun activity to do with your siblings or friends and you get a great piece of art to hang in your bedroom. WHAT YOU NEED:

• The letters that represents you • Paint • Feathers • Beads • Flowers • Literally anything at the craft store that you like and will easily attach to your letters • Glue INSTRUCTIONS:

• Grab some newspaper and lay it out to protect your floor or table. • Next do whatever you want to your letters! You can paint them your favorite color and add polka dots. You can add

• Metal circles the size of your wrist (you can buy them at a craft store) • Colored string • Superglue • Charms and charm hooks (also from a craft store) INSTRUCTIONS: (Make sure you have a parent around if you need help applying the superglue.)

• Take the string color of your choice and have it ready to wrap around the metal circle. • Taking the superglue, lightly apply it to the metal circle in sections. Do about ½ inch sections and then begin to tightly wind the string around it. Do this process until the whole circle is covered. You can add more than one color if you please, or just keep it with a single color. • Next, take your charms and start adding them to your bracelet. • Do the same process for a few more bracelets and you’ll have a variety to wear to school and as well as some extras for your friends!

Have you tried any of these craft ideas at home? Show us your pictures! We would love to see your creative side. Send them to crafts@prioritygirlmagazine.com

ermaid hair, dip-dyes, or fashion colors – whatever you want to call it – colored hair is in! Pastel pinks, vibrant blues and neon greens are all making a statement in hair trends this summer – and they’re all styles you can easily wear – as long as you do it right. But before you venture into the land of colored hair, do your research. What color do you want? Will you be dyeing all your hair? Just the tips? Or doing highlights throughout? Having colored hair is a lot of work and a monthly upkeep if you want it looking nice - it’s a commitment you have to be willing to take.

A QUICK SPLASH? Picking a brand of color to use always depends on how long you want the color to last. If you only want a fun color for a short while then go with brands like Manic Panic, Splat, or Amplified. These brands are usually sold at a local beauty store like Sally’s and aren’t terribly expensive. Usually one tube will do but it is always better to grab a second or third if your hair is a bit thick. You can choose from a whole host of colors, including pastel,

Priority Girl TIP Whenever you use tools on your hair, like a curling iron or straightener, remember to use a heat protector. It’s a 10 is great because not only does protect your hair from heat – it also helps control frizz and prevents split ends! ombre, and neon. Manic Panic smells great and is easy to apply but doesn’t come with many directions. Splat comes with step by step directions, so it is perfect for beginners!

look at Pravana or Joico. These brands are also reasonable in price, usually less than $10 a tube - and two tubes will usually work. However, you won’t find them in any regular store. Search online – Amazon is your best bet. But be warned, they will stain anything they touch! Be careful of floors and table tops when applying, and always remember to buy gloves and a brush make sure your hands stay color free!

ASK The Professionals We sat down with independent stylist, Haley Twitchell, and asked her a bit more about looking after our crazy bright colors this summer: CAN I SWIM WITH COLORED HAIR?

The best simple trick to keeping color while swimming is to actually get your hair wet before you go in the pool - and put conditioner in it so that the chlorine doesn’t actually penetrate your hair cuticle. WHAT ABOUT THE SEA, OR LAKES?

Do the same thing. If you are a regular swimmer, your color will fade faster than normal but the conditioner will help protect your color from anything in the water. WHAT ABOUT SWIM CAPS? CAN THEY SAVE MY HAIR?

CLEAN HEAD OF HAIR! To ensure that your color will last and is as bright as you want it to be, you might consider hiring a professional, which will obviously cost a bit of money. But if you’re saving those cents and want to go it alone, make sure you wash your hair in cold water - and use a sulfite-free shampoo and conditioner. Hot water will make the color strip faster and sulfite-free shampoo helps hold the color longer. The best brand to use is Redken Color Extended Magnetics Sulfate-Free shampoo. This will help keep its color bright and shiny. It is a bit on the expensive side, but the bottles are huge and they should last you about two months! You can find Redken or any sulfite free shampoo at beauty stores, like Ulta.

* * * *

Using GOOD PRODUCTS is key for great hair. Your hair is an investment, so take care of it!

SALON BRAND products are always the best – and stay away from fruity smelling products at the drug stores.

Be careful with HOT TOOLS – don’t use them daily, and do use them correctly.

With these AMAZING TIPS, your hair is sure to be looking fun and fabulous during the summer months.

Happy Coloring Everyone!

Swim caps can help sometimes. If you have thick or really long hair, it will probably still get damp if the swim cap is too full and can’t get tight to the head. WHAT CONDITIONER BRANDS DO YOU RECOMMEND TO USE?

My favorite brands are Pureology, Redken, and TIGI - depending on what price point you are looking at. Just always make sure it is specifically for color-treated hair. IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO PROTECT IT FROM SUN-FADING?

There are products such as It’s A 10 leave-in conditioner spray which you can use before styling, or when air drying, that protects your hair from UV - and even humidity. WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT A DRY SCALP, OR BRITTLE HAIR THIS SUMMER?

Good shampoo and conditioner is the best starting point. I also suggest using a deep conditioner or conditioning hair mask once a week. Most hair care lines make one, I usually suggest It’s A 10 Miracle Hair Mask or their Miracle Deep Conditioner.

Reach For The Stars Ever gazed up at the sky at night and thought how amazing it is to see all those stars? Ever wondered how they got there? How far away they are? Whether there are any planets like Earth out there somewhere? Ever thought about doing it as a job?! BY JEREMY BARRON

A

my Mainzer is an astronomer – she studies all that for a living; the sun, moon, stars, planets, comets, galaxies – and so much more besides. Her job is so cool. It’s incredible. Space has inspired so many books and films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, Star Trek, Space Chimps, Space Dogs…(the list goes on). To study it – and get paid too – must be awesome! But how do you become an astronomer? Why aren’t there more girls? And what’s it really like as a job? We spoke to Amy about working for NASA and why she thinks astronomy is the coolest thing ever. ARE YOU A SCIENTISTS OR AN ASTRONOMER?

Both. As a scientist, my job is to understand and appreciate nature. In particular, I’m an astronomer, and this has given me a tremendous opportunity to learn about the amazing universe we live in.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BE AN ASTRONOMER?

At first, I was attracted to astronomy because I thought the pictures I saw of stars and galaxies were beautiful to look at. But what kept me interested was that I was curious about the world around me, and I wanted to try to understand a few simple questions: why are we here? And where is ‘here’, for that matter? What is this place that I’m in, and what else is out there? As I learned more about it, science and astronomy provided a way to try to answer some of these questions.

WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING AN ASTRONOMER?

One day is always different from the next. I specialize in instrumentation which means I deal with lots of different subjects, ranging from computers, to electronics, to telescopes and cameras. WHAT DO YOU DO?

Right now at NASA, my job is to run a space telescope called NEOWISE, which is orbiting the Earth and scanning the skies looking for asteroids and comets. We are learning what asteroids are made of and how they move throughout the solar system.

RATE ASTRONOMY OUT OF 10

10 WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS NUMBER?

By becoming an astronomer, I’ve gained a whole new perspective on the universe. Planet Earth is so much more important to me now, because I know how special it is. We’ve found thousands of planets around other stars, and even though there are lots of them, they are too far away for us to go to them. So we absolutely must take good care of this planet – it’s the only home we’ve got.

SCIENCE, TECH, ENGINEERING AND MATH! In each issue CAREER SPOTLIGHT will show you how studying hard in these subjects can not only be fun - but also earn you lots of money when you are older!

Fact!

Only 36% of astronomers are women! HOW DO YOU BECOME AN ASTRONOMER?

Astronomy uses a lot of different skills. Of course you need to study math and physics, and I spend a lot of time writing programs on my computer to figure out what the images we collect from our telescopes are telling us. But I think a lot of folks don’t realize how much time we spend reading, writing, and speaking in this field. Astronomy these days is highly collaborative, meaning that we work in pretty big groups of people a lot of the time. It’s a very social activity since we work with people all over the world. That means you need to be able to communicate your ideas to other people.

Galactic Careers Working for NASA must be awesome! A good understanding of math and science is important – especially physics. But what different jobs are there? We picked 3 of the best!

WHAT’S THE COOLEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

As a scientist, your job is to try to understand why things work the way they do. The universe and Planet Earth in particular is full of so many beautiful and mind-blowing things. There is nothing quite like finally understanding how something works – whether it’s why the sky is blue, or how clownfish find their anemone homes on coral reefs, or how many asteroids are out there orbiting the Sun. To me, nature is full of wonderful stories. Learning about how the world works is like watching a great TV show in space where you love spending time with the characters. You have to find out what happens next! AND FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE HAVE YOU GOT FOR ANY BUDDING FEMALE ASTRONOMERS OUT THERE?

One thing about my job is that it is never boring! And there’s no reason why more girls shouldn’t do it. As an instrument builder, the time I spent as a kid doing random little art projects (like making silly hats) turned out to be pretty useful. If you like to tinker and make stuff, then building telescopes and astronomy might just be for you!

An Alien’s Guide to the Human Boy

Hey, guys! Xandra the Alien, here. The people of my planet have been studying the complex Earth species known as ‘The Human Boy’, for quite some time. When we first encountered this creature, we were deeply confused by its behavior. What surprised us even more was that the dominant species of Earth, known as ‘The Human Girl’, was

26

often just as confused with its behavior as we were. So, after studying the creature and analyzing the way it lives, we decided it was best to create a guide to help both aliens and earthlings understand this complex organism. By following these tips, we hope you Earth-females will be able to provide the best care for this strange looking sub-species.

The Art Of The Matter – Meet Famous Artists and Enter Our Competition!

MICHELANGELO The First Celebrity Artist!

C

BY RHONA REID

iao! I’m Michelangelo Buonarroti, better known simply as Michelangelo. I was born in a small village near Florence in 1475. I started as an apprentice painter when I was 13 years old, but soon moved on to trying my hand at sculpture! One of my most famous sculptures is the statue of David, which the city of Florence liked so much, that they adopted it

28

as their city mascot! I was called to Rome in 1503 to paint for the Pope, and there, between 1508 and 1512, I painted one of my most celebrated works – the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The fresco (painting directly onto plaster) contains over 300 figures from the Bible, and I had to design a special scaffold to support me whilst painting it!

PR I O R I T Y G I R L | S E P T E M B E R 2015 | p r i o r i t yg i r l m a g a zi n e .c o m

ARE YOU AN ARTIST?

How many?!

5 million people visit the Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo’s fresco each year. That’s 25,00 0 people per day!

So now we know a bit more about Michelangelo, and his artwork! Feeling inspired? Excellent! We want you to come up with some original artwork, inspired by Michelangelo! Tall order? Not really. We don’t expect you to redecorate the ceiling of your bedroom, we just want you to get out your paints or pencils and paint or draw a figure – or even figures - perhaps using the bright colours that Michelangelo used for the Sistine Chapel. If you want a real challenge, and to have a glimpse at how Michelangelo felt when he painted the Sistine Chapel, tape your piece of paper to the underside of a table, put your head on a cushion, and draw or sketch from a lying down position! Just don’t use wet paints for this idea… Send your original work (by hashtagged photos on Twitter, Instagram, shareable link or JPEG), by the 10th of September, to marked ‘The Art Of The Matter’ in the title. Please add your name, age and email address, to contact you if you’re a winner.

Tummy ache Michelangelo was so fed up with the aches and pains he developed from painting the ceiling, that he wrote a poem about it, which included the lines ‘My stomach’s squashed under my chin, my beard’s pointing at heaven’!’ Doesn’t sound particularly comfortable, now that you mention it…

Now, even though I was a celebrated and well-paid painter, poet and architect during my lifetime, I was also known as being a bit of a grouch, and not particularly bothered about making friends! To be honest, if you had spent four years painting a ceiling, you might feel a bit grumpy too! I’m known as an artist of the Renaissance movement, which

means a period of exciting intellectual and creative activity. Before the Renaissance, artists were known as craftsmen and not given much credit. My fame helped to change that and artists became much more respected for their work. I went on to paint and sculpt many more pieces, which can be seen today in exhibitions and collections around the world. Thanks for reading a bit about my life. Ciao!

Water For All BY ALEX GREEN

ver realize how lucky you are to be able to turn on a tap and fill yourself a glass of water? It’s not the same for everyone. In poorer countries across the world, the struggle to avoid dehydration is the first thing many people think about when they wake up, and the last thing they think about before going to bed. They don’t have the luxury of fresh drinking water flowing from their kitchen tap. It’s not all bad, of course. There are many places where water is accessible, but it is a serious problem across the globe. And it’s getting worse.

E

POOR WATER There are two main problems with planet Earth’s drinking water – there isn’t enough of it, and much of the water that does exist isn’t clean enough or safe for humans. It often comes from polluted sources, or hasn’t been treated properly.

MIRACLE WATER But here’s the good news – there are organizations all over the world working to fix things. You may have seen photos of children in different countries full of excitement when a well or pump is installed in their town – because for so many, being able to have clean water is simply a miracle.

DROUGHT The reason we’re obsessed with water this month is because the problem isn’t just restricted to the poor countries. It’s hitting us right here in America – right now! California is in to the fourth year of a major drought; one that has broken records over and over because of how bad it is and how long it’s been going on. The heat waves and lack of rain have destroyed millions of crops, created dangerous forest fires, and forced people throughout California to conserve the little water they have left.

30

PR I O R I T Y G I R L | S E P T E M B E R 2015 | p r i o r i t yg i r l m a g a zi n e .c o m

What can we do? Water conservation is all about the little things, and how if everyone gets involved we can make a huge difference. In parts of California like San Diego, local governments are passing laws limiting water use. In some places you can only water lawns after sunset, public pool hours are reduced, and businesses have to monitor water consumption. But what can a Priority Girl do?

Saving Water in the House

If it sounds scary – well, it is! According to the U.S. Forest Service, over ten million trees have died throughout California due to the heat. It’s hurting the state economically too – many of the crops that keep farmers and many others employed are fading away. Even our wildlife is in danger. Due to dried up riverbeds, several species of salmon are unable to reproduce. Others are trapped in the ocean waiting for floodwaters to bring them back inland. In California, it isn’t clean water that’s the problem – it’s the lack of freshwater, and reserves are dwindling fast. We may not be able to stop the drought, but we can teach others to use water wisely. What will you do to help the planet’s water problems?

Social media & online You can also help by following clean water organizations on social media and spreading the good word about what they’re doing. Global Citizen is a non-profit that tries to make a difference in the world on so many issues – including problems with the planet’s water. This year they are staging a concert featuring Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Coldplay and many more – check them out at www.globalcitizen.org

• In the bathroom, you can keep your showers shorter and colder – less water and less energy used. You’re still allowed to sing of course! • Turn the water off while brushing. Whether you spend 5 seconds or 5 minutes brushing, that’s a lot of water going down the drain. • We’ll let you do your thing with toilets, but but always listen for the sound of a running toilet. Less usage is better for the environment! • In the kitchen, most dishwashers have eco-friendly modes that use less water. • Even better, wash dishes by hand and leave the water off while you’re soaping up everything. • In a throwback to our recycling feature last month, use a Brita to get clean water and reduce the amount of plastics in the environment! • Collect rainwater in a backyard silo or homemade rain catcher to give to homeless organizations, churches, and other non-profits.

Walking a razor’s edge, calculating every decision, not sure sometimes who she is or what she is doing it for, Violet is an unforgettable heroine, and Pretending to be Erica is a killer debut.

The Fixer

BY HUNTER FITZPATRICK

BY JENNIFER LYNN BARNES

Fitzpatrick returns to the theme of opposites uniting in this heartfelt companion to My Life Next Door (2012), which revisits the large, boisterous Garrett family. When the story begins, eldest daughter Alice is overwhelmed by the responsibilities of working at her parents’ hardware store, chauffeuring her siblings around town, and tackling the family’s mounting bills while her father is in the hospital. She cannot help but be irritated when her brother’s screw-up buddy, Tim, gets kicked out of his house and usurps her one place of refuge, the apartment above the garage. Tim appears to be turning over a new leaf, but when the serious consequences of Tim’s wild days come crashing down, it threatens to compromise Tim’s plans for the future and destroy his blossoming romance with Alice. The well-defined characters, splashes of humor, and emotional entanglements of Fitzpatrick’s previous works reappear in full force in this contemporary romance. Not every conflict gets resolved, but readers will sense that the Garretts and newcomer Tim will surpass their obstacles and thrive.

Sixteen-year-old Tess Kendrick has spent her entire life on her grandfather’s ranch. But when her estranged sister Ivy uproots her to D.C., Tess is thrown into a world that revolves around politics and power. She also starts at Hardwicke Academy, the D.C. school for the children of the rich and powerful, where she unwittingly becomes a fixer for the high school set, fixing teens’ problems the way her sister fixes their parents’ problems. And when a conspiracy surfaces that involves the family member of one of Tess’s classmates, love triangles and unbelievable family secrets come to light and life gets even more interesting—and complicated—for Tess. Perfect for fans of Pretty Little Liars and Heist Society, readers will be clamoring for this compelling teen drama with a political twist.

Paperweight BY MEG HASTON

Seventeen-year-old Stevie is trapped. In her life. In her body. And now in an eating-disorder treatment center on the dusty outskirts of the New Mexico desert. Life in the center is regimented and intrusive, a nightmare come true. Nurses and therapists watch Stevie at mealtime, accompany her to the bathroom, and challenge her to eat the foods she’s worked so hard to avoid. Her dad has signed her up for sixty days of treatment. But what no one knows is that Stevie doesn’t plan to stay that long. There are only twenty-seven days until the anniversary of her brother Josh’s death—the death she caused. And if Stevie gets her way, there are only twenty-seven days until she too will end her life. In this emotionally haunting and beautifully written young adult debut, Meg Haston delves into the devastating impact of trauma and loss, while posing the question: Why are some consumed by their illness while others embark on a path toward recovery?

Owls of San Diego BY JEREMY BARRON

S

an Diego County is a haven for wildlife. Animals can choose from so many different habitats to live in. There are beaches, canyons, mountains, forests and even deserts! This place has it all! Did you know that the county has more bird species living here than any other county in the entire United States?! People literally flock from all over the world just to glimpse a little peek at some of our feathered friends. And what bird is more endearing than the

wide-eyed owl? Usually associated with being clever and wise, owls have a reputation for being cuddly and friendly – just like Winnie the Pooh’s Owl, and Hedwig from Harry Potter. But looks can be deceiving. Owls are silent, deadly hunters – and have even been known to eat their own brothers and sisters in the nest! Here are a few facts about the owls living near you in San Diego, and where you can go if you want to see them in the wild. DESCRIPTION: Small owl

with brown or dark gray plumage and streaks underneath. Round head with ear tufts, yellow eyes and a yellow bill. WINGSPAN: 55cm. DIET: Little birds, mice, shrews, insects. HABITAT: Forests, deserts – and sometimes urban areas like your garden! DID YOU KNOW? Western screech owls are really hard to spot because they often blend in with the tree they are perched on!

Great Horned Owl DESCRIPTION: Large owl with a light and mottled brown color, white throat, and tufts that look like horns. WINGSPAN: 150cm.

DIET: Rodents, rabbits, woodchucks, squirrels, and even skunks. They will also sometimes eat other birds such as ducks and hawks.

HABITAT: Deserts, cliffs, forests and shrublands. DID YOU KNOW? Some people call the great horned owl the cat owl because its tufts make it look like a cat. Other names are the hoot owl and the tiger owl.

Burrowing Owl

DESCRIPTION: Small brown owl with long legs. They have short tails and no ear tufts. The eyes and bill are yellow, and they nest in burrows. WINGSPAN: 55cm. DIET: Large insects, small birds and mammals. HABITAT: Grasslands, farms and deserts. DID YOU KNOW? The burrowing owl collects animal poo and puts it in and around its burrow! This attracts dung beetles which the owls eats. Mmm, yummy!

WINGSPAN: 100cm. DIET: Small mammals, insects and birds - often sea birds, like terns and smaller gulls, who share their habitat. HABITAT: Grasslands, coastline and marshes. DID YOU KNOW? The short eared owl has been known to pretend to have a broken wing to distract predators from eating its young!

Short-Eared Owl

Long-Eared Owl

DESCRIPTION: Brownishgray, medium-sized owl with long ear-tufts and an orange facial disk. WINGSPAN: 95cm. DIET: Small mammals, birds and reptiles. HABITAT: Cliffs, forests and open land. orses are admired for beauty, speed and intelligence. They can pull a plow, wagon or sleigh, round up cows, serve in law enforcement and be shown or ridden for fun. Read on to find out more about these gentle giants.

COST ‘N CARE Horses need space, food, water and shelter. Two acres per horse is good, but a well-managed, small property with plenty of grass and hay can work okay. There is no grain in the wild horse’s diet, but it can be a valuable supplement for older horses or to treat a special condition. Fresh water is necessary all the time, and shelter from wind, sun

and cold rain can be provided by trees, a shed, woods or a barn stall. Horses are claustrophobic and prefer being outside 24/7. They are sociable and some horse owners purchase a mini or a sheep for companionship, which is less expensive than a second big horse! Boarding a horse can cost between $150 and $800 per month, and you still have vet check-ups twice a year for a basic physical and shots. Hooves grow like toenails and need regular trims every six to eight weeks from a good farrier. You should brush your beautiful equine friend at least twice a week – more is better – to check for tick bites, cuts or injury. A horse or pony may be a big commitment in time, energy and money, but the advantages are huge for building self-confidence

THE TAIL END • A horse’s tail consists of two parts: the dock and the skirt. • The tail is most useful for swatting biting insects, and two horses naturally stand head to tail in summer to swat one another’s face. • A violin bow is made with horse hair. • The ponytail hairstyle comes directly from the look of a real pony or horse tail!

Measurement Horses and ponies (except minis) are measured in ‘hands’ vertically from the ground to the withers. One hand = 4 inches.

M O N E Y M AT T E R S BY CORINE HAMPTON

Saving Money… It’s Easier Than You Think

W

hen I was little, my grandfather told me that money grew from a hole in the backyard. He was a funny fellow, who would go outside and come right back with a dollar or a shiny quarter. What he didn’t tell me was that I should have been putting that money back, in the hole, to save for a rainy day. One of the best things you can do as a Priority Girl is learn the value of money and how to save it. Right now, money is probably pretty easy to get. Perhaps doing a few chores around the house or babysitting the twins next door will get you a few dollars. Maybe even enough to buy a movie, download some tunes or buy that new game you’ve been thinking about. However, as we get older our wants will become more expensive and that’s where having a plan will help you get the things you want. A simple saving strategy is for every dollar you earn, save one dollar. For example, if you earn 10 dollars, walking the neighbors’ dog, then 5 dollars would go into your piggy bank or savings account. This simple trick will allow you to spend some money, while saving an equal amount too. Another great saving strategy is to ask older family members for any spare change that they might have laying around (especially in their car). Change can add up very quickly and you’ll actually be doing them a favor – “especially, if you help them clean out the car!” My favorite trick for saving money is to never spend one-dollar bills. I save all my dollar bills in a special container. When the container is full, I take them all down to the bank. What’s the largest number of one-dollar bills that you ever had? (I once saved 321! Ka-ching!) Saving might seem hard at first, but once you get in the habit of doing it, you’ll see just how easy it is. It will also be its own reward because when you want to buy something, whether it’s a car (when your older), or the latest CD, you will have shown your parents and family just how responsible and economically thoughtful you can be.

Picture Day Preparations

BACKPACKS

It seems like once school starts, Picture Day isn’t that far away. When you look back at the photo years from now, you’ll get a glimpse of what you liked back then, so wear your favorite outfit! One year, I wore a Minnie Mouse shirt! When I look at it now, I smile because I still love all things Minnie Mouse. Some things never change…

This is something you’ll probably use every day, so find something that you love. Make sure it’s comfortable and will fit all your books. A black backpack will go with anything you wear and is timeless. Priority Girl Recommends: WHAT? Casual Style Lightweight Canvas Backpack from Leaper HOW MUCH? $32.99 WHERE? Amazon.com

The night before, decide how you want to do your hair: straight, curly, braids, half pulled back… Talk to your parents ahead of time, so they can help you.

What if I have to wear a uniform? You can individualize an outfit with headbands, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings. But make sure to check out your school’s rules about jewelry. If you have to wear a skirt, find out if you’re allowed to wear colored or patterned socks. If your school has any ‘casual’ days, ask your parents if you can go shopping for a special outfit for that day.

The best thing is to feel comfortable and fabulous in your outfit – and remember to smile!

What if I’m homeschooled? Girls who are homeschooled have all different types of schedules. Some take a break during the summer and others do school work the whole year. If you’re learning it at home, it’s easy to just stay in your pajamas all day. For some people it helps to treat it like a real school day, get dressed and show up to ‘school’ (even if it is in your kitchen!). If you think this will help you, put together some outfits from your closet or ask your parents if you can get your own ‘back to school’ gear.

I

f you’ve ever caught yourself doodling designs when you should be doing math, then there’s a new TV show that might just make you feel like you’re not alone. Project Runway Junior is coming to Lifetime this fall. The show is an off-shoot of Project Runway, where designers compete against each other. The mother show has been on the air since 2004 with 13 seasons. Now it’s time for teens to rule the runway!

THE SHOW The contest is open to designers aged 14-17. Contestants have

48

to submit a virtual portfolio of their designs and finished products – and create a video showing off their personality (they’re posted on Youtube). After this, the field is whittled down. The rest... you can see on TV this fall! The winning designer will go home with cash prizes and a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. According to Lifetime, Project Runway host Tim Gunn will also host PR Junior, along with model Hannah Davis. The contestants will be judged by Christian Siriano and Aya Kanai – who is the Executive Fashion Editor at Seventeen Magazine.

Lipstick in

Demystifying this year’s biggest beauty trend.

T

his year, no trend has hit with a bigger splash than the bold, powerful lip: Every icon, movie star, and artist seems to be rocking a statement lip! Unfortunately, most girls agree that lipstick is often the most daunting of makeup products to use. Whether it be the fear of standing out, or the fear of not knowing how to choose colors and apply, girls all over the country have looked on at the lipstick craze with a defeated sigh. As we enter fall and embrace the changes in colors outdoors, there’s never been a better time for you to break out of your shell with a splash of lip color. This step-by-step guide will get you vibrant and spunky in no time!

1. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONES First things first: Lipstick is like paint, and your face a canvas! Understanding how those two shades work together is the most important tool in choosing your lip color. Everyone has undertones to their skin, that are either yellow or pink: yellow is warm - pink is cool. Take a quick look at the veins on your wrist/ underarms to give you a clue: If they look blue, then you likely have a balm and cool undertone. If your Don’t sweat it. Tinted lip t colors veins appear to be lip-glosses let you try ou to use in greener, then you have that you might be scared – you still a warmer undertone. If a lipstick. But remember t results. yours look both green need to exfoliate for bes and blue or you can’t see them, then you have a neutral or dark tone and get a free pass in the undertone department. All the lipsticks for you!

Not ready for lipstick?

2. CHOOSE A COLOR When picking out your lipstick, make sure the color complements your skin/undertones. The rule of thumb is, you want your lipstick to have the same kind of undertones as your skin does: For yellow undertones, stick to lipsticks with warmer undertones as well - the same goes for cool. If your skin is olive, neutral or dark, you get a free pass. Make sure to consider your setting as well: Daytime and casual events call for more natural colors, like pinks, peaches, and sheer reds. Night-time and more upscale events can tolerate a heavier, dark lip, like plums, statement reds and primary colors.

50

3. PREP YOUR BASE Ideally, each time you put lipstick on you should exfoliate your lips (remove the dead skin). This is because dead skin cells on the top layer of your lips don’t allow the lipstick to set evenly, and the texture can end up looking flaky. Don’t have an exfoliant on hand? Simply mix together a honey/sugar blend and gently rub into your lips, rinsing when finished. Pat your lips dry, and you’re ready for the next stage.

4. DRAW IN THE LINES Take a nude pencil and trace the outer outline of your lips, gently filling in the lip in with liner afterward. This step is vital, as it stops the lipstick from running off of your lips, looking sloppy and smudged. It also keeps you from having to constantly reapply or reshape.

5. PRIME & APPLY After lining, prime your lips - either with a simple colorless chapstick, or a lipstick primer from a beauty store. This step sticks the color to your base, making you much more likely to have your lipstick intact when you head back home!

6. STAY BALANCED If you’re going for a bold lip, then that should be your main statement feature. Tone down the rest of your makeup to make your lips the main event! Rather than a heavy blush or eye shadow, go for more natural-looking foundation and eyes, keeping your face balanced.

7. MATCH YOUR OUTFIT Just like you want to stay balanced with your makeup, what you’re wearing mustn’t clash with your lips either. Don’t completely shy away from color though; a nice bright contrast actually goes great against a pop of lip color. Just avoid patterns that are too hectic, or accessories that are large and attention-grabbing.

Now head out the door, and rock those new lips!

Jes sica Calalang and Zack Sidhu placed fifth at the 20 15 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Cha mpionships.

eam USA pairs skater Jessica Calalang, 20, grew up in Illinois and laced up her skates when she was 5 years old. “My grandma took me to skate classes at our local rink, just to get me out of the house,” she says. “And I have been doing it ever since.” Around the time she was 12 or 13, Jessica started to try pairs skating, which involves skating with a partner, being lifted and doing spins side-by-side. When she was 15, she went out to Aliso Viejo, California to tryout with a potential pairs partner. A month later, she moved there to skate with her new partner, Zack Sidhu. She says it wasn’t easy leaving family and friends behind. “It’s a pretty big deal and you’re basically starting almost from scratch.” Both skaters say they prefer skating together rather than alone. They spend a lot of time together, training about 25

hours per week. That includes skating 3 hours per day for 5-to-6 days per week! They also work out off the ice. When you spend that much time with someone, it’s important to get along and communicate well. “We always try to talk about something if we get mad at each other,” Zack says. “I think we do a good job with that.” The team competes on the senior level, which is the very highest. At the 2015 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, they placed 5th. When she’s not skating, Jessica likes to go to the beach and to shop. Zack likes to go surfing, especially before going skating in the morning. Jessica also takes classes through Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, which is not far from the skating rink. Jessica and Zack are scheduled to compete at the NHK Trophy in Nagano, Japan this November and at the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota in January.

‘Lutz’ Give a Try

SKATING

How to get Involved in the Coolest Sport on Ice

A

s winter approaches, a lot of people try ice skating for fun, but it’s actually a ‘cool’ exercise you can enjoy any time of the year. Chances are that you live close to a rink where you can experience the joy of skating – and maybe even decide to take it up!

GETTING STARTED You don’t need your own pair of ice skates to get started. Most rinks have skates that are either free or discounted. You’ll want to dress in layers. Try tights, leggings and stretchy pants and then a t-shirt, turtleneck and a sweatshirt or coat. Also, wear gloves and a headband or hat! You want to make sure you’ll be warm and able to move at the same time.

BASIC SKILLS The US Figure Skating Basic Skills program is where most of today’s Olympic and world athletes started. The programs include a 25 to 30 minute group lesson each week over the course of about eight weeks. There are eight levels: Basic Skills 1-8, where you will learn the fundamentals of ice skating. You can also try out other types of skating - like pairs, hockey, synchronized and ice dance. To find a Basic Skills program in your area, visit the Programs tab on www.usfsa.org and type in your zip code.

BENEFITS Skating is both athletic and artistic. It’s a good exercise for your whole body, but it also gives you a chance to express yourself. You can pick music and interpret it as you wish. Skating is also a great way to make new friends. The skaters at your rink can become your ‘skating family’. SOAK ERS: These are the sof t covers you put on your skates MOVING UP when you’re done skatin g. But Once you progress through group lessons, make sure to towel dry your skates you can start private or semi-private lessons to before putting them on ! keep advancing. There are many opportunities for GUAR D: These are the rubber skaters, who want to take it more seriously. You covers you wear on you r skates can move up the different levels by testing in front when you’re walking off the ice. of judges, competing or skating in shows. Take them off overnigh t! If you do decide to continue skating, you’ll want TOE-PICK: The spikes at the front to get your own pair of skates. A used pair is fine of your skate. They ’re use d for to start off with – and they won’t be so stiff. Ask jumping and sometime s spinning, coaches at your rink about where you can buy them. but not for stopping!

DISCIPLINE

WHAT YOU DO

Freestyle

This is usually what you see on TV and it’s one of the most popular sports in the Olympics. Women and men compete separately. They perform jumps, spins and footwork to the music of their choice.

Pairs

This type of skating with a partner includes overhead lifts, side-by-side spins and jumps, and special moves like a death spiral - look it up online!

Ice Dance

Similar to ballroom dancing on ice, you also skate with a partner. There are no jumps and more of an emphasis on dancing, especially in the ballroom styles of waltz, tango, and Latin dance.

Synchronized

Teams skate in formations and often in unison to create shapes on the ice. Requires precision and skating very close to your teammates.

Theater on Ice

The newest discipline of skating. Teams combine music, theater and dance to tell a story. They are allowed to use props and costumes.

Reasons To

SWIM

Swimming is for almost everyone. Babies have a blast, grandparents think it’s great. It’s for the able-bodied, and for many with physical disabilities. Being in the water is so much fun. Just in case there’s anyone who isn’t quite persuaded yet, we’ve put together a list of the top reasons to grab your goggles and dive in!

Swim facts • Swimming has been a part of the Olympics since 1896. • Most animals are natural swimmers – even elephants! • Around 65 thousand people in the US don’t know how to swim. Can you?!

54

1

Core Strength and Cardio

Swimming uses all of your muscles at the same time. While you’re having fun, you’re building core strength. This means that you’re developing the vital muscles in your abdomen (tummy) and back. Also, swimming a few lengths of the pool means that you’re getting a great cardiovascular workout too, plus letting your body benefit from a low-impact activity.

PR I O R I T Y G I R L | S E P T E M B E R 2015 | p r i o r i t yg i r l m a g a zi n e .c o m

2

Stress-Busting Strokes

If you’ve been studying hard, or worrying about exams or tests coming up, then swimming has been shown to help cut stress or feelings of worry. Like other forms of exercise, swimming is one of the very best ways to feel calmer and more in control again.

4

3

Safety And Life Saving

Especially important when you live close to the ocean - learning to swim strongly is a life-skill everyone should have. Take it to the next level and think about taking a course in beach and ocean safety. The San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program is open to ages 9-17 years, and teaches some pretty awesome skills, including lifesaving techniques, snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding. Get in touch with them to find out more, or check out their website www.sdjuniorguards@sandiego.gov

Set Goal, Achieve Goal

How many lengths did you manage to swim last time? Maybe you’re working on your butterfly technique, or just getting started in the water. Whether a beginner, novice, expert or advanced, set your sights on the next level, and give yourself a goal to work towards. Achieving it will bolster your confidence and motivate you for the next goal!

5

Teamwork or Time Out?

Swimming’s good for both. Learning to train and perform as part of a team is both sociable and fun! Some people are much happier learning and improving in a group, while others prefer a more solitary approach. Swimming is something you can enjoy if you feel like some quiet time, as long as you’re in a pool or swimming area with life guards nearby.

So there you go… five reasons to grab your swimsuit and hit the water! We can’t imagine that you need any more motivation to get out there and start splashing around, but just in case you do, don’t forget there’s always time to float around pretending that you’re a mermaid, maybe even Ariel…swimming, singing songs, talking to seagulls… What? Seriously? You’ve never done that? Okay. Just us then…

The Beautiful Game in America’s Finest City BY WILLIAM POOLE

T

he excitement, the goals, the trophies, oh my! The United States Women’s Soccer Team won the 2015 World Cup in what was a dream tournament for the players and fans across America. Nowhere was support for the team, more apparent, than right here in sunny San Diego. Every match day, there was a buzz around the city and the final game was shown on the big screen at Petco Park! Even though the Women’s World Cup is over for now, there are tons of opportunities for young San Diegans to get out there and play the game!

56

WATCH TOMORROW’S STARS TODAY San Diego doesn’t have a professional soccer team yet, but we do have two great college teams. Last year, San Diego State University had a strong season and made it all the way to the NCAA tournament. This season promises to be just as successful for the Aztecs and you can be a part of the action. They play their home games on the SDSU campus, at a rooftop field called the Sports Deck. Women’s Soccer Team is looking to improve upon their 10-win 2014 season by playing seven of the best teams in the country in 2015. The Lady Toreros will have their sights set on a West Coast Championship when they start play this season. Find a game to attend this season on the USD website at: www.usdtoreros.com Can’t decide which team to watch? Catch both local teams on September 17, 2015 when they square off against each other!

The University of San Diego Women’s Soccer Team, The Lady Toreros.

Develop Your Soccer Skills This Fall The only thing more fun than watching soccer, is playing soccer! Luckily, San Diego has one of the best youth soccer programs in the country and offers a chance for all girls to play. Pacific Youth Soccer League (PYSL) has soccer teams for girls aged 6 all the way up to 16. This league is a great way for players of any skill level to gain experience, get exercise, and have fun. The PYSL starts this fall at fields all across San Diego and there is still time to register for a team if you hurry! For girls who are highly skilled soccer players and would like to play competitively, the San Diego Surf Soccer Club have teams for pretty much every age group. They play in tournaments all over Southern California and in order to gain a roster spot, players must try-out. The next generation of soccer super stars has to come from somewhere, why not San Diego? Get out into the community, train hard, and maybe someday you can represent your country or college on the soccer field!

A Future Star The United States Under-16 Girls’ National Team held a training camp in San Diego earlier this year that featured midfielder Kali Trevithick, who plays for the San Diego Surf!

We Have Some ‘Shocking’ News about San Diego

I

t would be a ‘shock’ if you hadn’t heard about the San Diego Chargers by now but, just in case you haven’t, let me give you the inside scoop. The Chargers are one of the four professional teams located in California. They wear blue, white and gold - and their logo is an electrifying lightning bolt on the side of their helmets. So whether or not you are a die-hard Chargers fan or you just like their colors, let me get you up to speed with San Diego’s team, so you know what you’re talking about.

FOOTBALL…UHHHHHH WHAT? If you don’t understand the lingo and terms used in a football game, it can sound like sports fans are speaking a totally different language; so before we go any further, let’s break down some key phrases and words that are used in football. • Quarterback: This is the guy who throws the football • Wide Receiver: These are the players that catch most of the balls thrown by the quarterback • Tight End: This player specifically catches mostly short throws • Touchdown: A touchdown is worth 6 points • Field Goal: Field goals are worth 3 points • Defense: The defense is doing everything they can to stop the opposing team from scoring a touchdown

58

SO, WHY ‘CHARGERS’? The name came from a ‘name the team’ contest. ‘Chargers’ won and they have held onto that name ever since. At the beginning of the team’s history, the logo was a horse and a lightning bolt, but they later got rid of the horse! So now you should be filled with enough Chargers-wisdom to be able to hold a conversation about San Diego’s favorite team with any sports fan! As the 2015-2016 season gets closer and closer, the Chargers are gearing up to be the biggest threat to all of the other teams in the NFL. So go cheer on your favorite team!

Things Every Chargers Fan Should know

‘Go ’ ! s t l Bo

Rivals

• Oakland Raiders • Kansas City Chiefs • Denver Broncos

The Q • The nickname for the Chargers stadium, which is short for Qualcomm Stadium.

Boltman • “Boltman” claims that he is the Chargers’ number one fan - by the way he dresses and his dedication to be in the front row at every game, he may be right! Boltman dresses up in a lightning bolt themed costume and ‘charges’ up the fans.

The Chargers Girls • The Chargers Girls are the official cheerleaders of the San Diego Chargers. They are known to be one of the best dance teams in the NFL and are made up of 28 women. • But they’re not just dancers! They are made up of career driven women, college students, and entertainers. 4 Steps to Get the Most Out of Social Media & Build Your Personal Brand

W

hat’s a personal brand? It’s showing off everything that makes you who you are by telling the world what you love and do everyday. It’s about marketing yourself and your success. It may seem like a weird thing to do, but we’ll explain why personal branding is essential. Think about musicians. Adele, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Alicia Keyes are all in the music industry, but they’ve got their own unique style and voice. It’s something they’ve developed over time. Adele is known for beautiful slow soulful music, and Taylor Swift for being a great country performer. Developing a personal brand is like developing a music style - sharing what motivates you and building on it. It’s important to have a unique voice today because you’ll stand out in class, clubs, college, and particularly in the future. If you have a passion and want to show the world who you are, social media can help you do it right!

1. KNOW YOUR PASSION It’s never easy to pick one thing you love, but try and think of it. It could be soccer, surfing, dancing, photography, singing, or anything you get excited about! Let your talents shine by focusing on your posts, photos & ideas on that subject. Become an expert on it. If you love surfing off the beach in San Diego, find that audience of surfers that live in San Diego, and grow from there. Anything’s possible when your find your niche!

2. BE CONSISTENT No matter what your interests are, consistency is the key. Constantly keep your media up to date so you don’t get lost in the tidal wave of other posts and pictures. Get back on Instagram after a few days - give Twitter 10 minutes! So much information goes by, make sure to keep your posts updated so your brand doesn’t fade away. For Instagram, we’d recommend posting 3 times a week. For Facebook, every day is good, and with Twitter you should be sending out a few a day.

3. SHOOT PHOTOS WITH STYLE Well shot photos for Instagram, Tumblr, and even Twitter are extremely important. Ask anyone who regularly posts photos on Instagram and they’ll say they the most popular photos are the ones that show more than the caption does. The same idea applies to Twitter too – the less words you use, the cleaner it looks.

4. NETWORK ON AND OFFLINE Networking is getting to know other people that share interests and goals that you have, and working together with them to grow together. It becomes more and more important the older you get, and learning how to work with people that you share mutual interests in will be incredibly beneficial. Try joining a club at school or better yet, start one if one doesn’t exist. When online with social media, don’t feel afraid to comment on posts. But remember to be safe – always let your parents know.

7.2 billion people live on planet Earth! Just over 3 billion of those use the internet. And of those users 2.1 billion have social media accounts. That’s a lot of ‘likes’!

ahh… goujons. Crispy, delicious, you can dip them in things… what’s not to love? Aside from their all-round yummy qualities, goujons can be healthy too, if they’re baked, as they are here. We’ve given the recipe for chicken goujons, but feel free to replace the chicken with strips of boneless fish, long, wide strips of bell pepper or even slices of haloumi cheese. Follow the same method and adjust the cooking times as indicated. Younger readers should ask an appropriate adult for help when cooking and using kitchen equipment.

rd, ! Goujon is a French wo on uj Go ur Yo ow Kn To Get we know However, the food that n. pi or d stu a ng ni ea m e late inated in Louisiana in th as goujons possibly orig ing. sociated with Cajun cook 19th centur y, and are as

YOU’LL NEED (for sharing between 4-6 people) – 2/3 cup fresh breadcrumbs – 2 boneless and skinless free range chicken breasts, cut into even, thick strips. Each breast should yield around 8-10 strips – 1/4 cup plain flour – 2 medium eggs, beaten – 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper – Salt and pepper – Olive oil

GO-GO GOUJONS! • Pre-heat the oven to 375ºF and oil a baking tray. • Get together three medium sized bowls, and set yourself up a goujon-making sta tion! • In the first bowl, sprinkle the flour to around a fingertip depth. • In the second bowl, have the beaten eggs ready. • In the third bowl, mix the breadcrumbs and cayenne with a little salt and pepper. • Now dip each chicken piece firstly into the flour, then into the egg, and finally into the breadcrumbs. • Lay each strip on the baking tray and when they are all ready for the oven, drizzle with olive oil. • Bake for 30 minutes until completely cooked through and golden brown. (Bell pepper strips will cook in the same amount of time as the chicken, but fish or haloumi goujons will need 10 minutes less in the oven.)

Dip That Strip!

Your goujons will be pre tty awesome on their ow n, but you can crank up the tas te even fur ther by makin g your own zingy dip! Simply put 3 ripe tomato es, 2 tablespoons of oli ve oil, a dash of balsamic/w ine vinegar, a clove of garlic, a squeeze of honey and a few basil leaves into a food processor and whiz tog ether, then season to sui t your taste. Your dip can be use d straight away, but wil l improve even more by leaving in the fridge overnight! Ser ve the goujons with your favorite salad, an d invite your luckiest friends to share them!

And finally… Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide. No, wait! One more… what did the cheese say when it looked in the mirror? “Haloumi.” ... Okay, now you can go!

FIFA 2016 PC, XBOX ONE, XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 4 & PLAYSTATION 3 - $59.99

FIFA is the world’s biggest soccer video game, and this year’s edition is important for one huge reason - it’s the first FIFA game to feature a woman on the cover! The incredible all-star player for the US, Alex Morgan! How cool is that? This year’s FIFA features better graphics, full 3D modelling of players and advanced passing and dribbling techniques. In addition to all that cool stuff, FIFA 2016 represents how much women’s soccer has grown in the international arena. The game features 12 national teams including the US, Canada, France, and Germany. Female athletes work just as hard as men, and with Alex Morgan sharing the front cover with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, FIFA 2016 shows us who really runs the world. Pick up a copy of this historic addition to the FIFA line-up in early September.

Never Alone PC, MAC, XBOX ONE, XBOX 360, PLAYSTATION 4 & WII U - $14.99

Never Alone is one of the most fascinating games we’ve played here at Priority Girl, and definitely worth $15 for an incredible story. Never Alone is a platforming game telling the story of an Alaskan Native girl, Nuna, and her pet fox as they wander through the tundra looking to put a stop to an endless blizzard. The visuals are amazing, and every moment you spend exploring the world with the characters, the more you fall in love with it. The developer of the game worked with forty Alaskan Native elders and storytellers to create a game that really gives you a sense of their culture. The music, puzzles, graphics, and everything are really something to see. Fall in love with Never Alone and its expansion, Foxtales, which is available on nearly every console.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 4 PC & ANDROID - $7.99

3

Her Story PC, MAC, IPAD & IPHONE - $5.99

Like Never Alone, Her Story is a game that takes storytelling to a totally different level. In this game, you play a detective interviewing a woman who is a suspect in the 1994 murder of her husband – your job is to review all of the interview footage and decide if she’s guilty or not. With dozens of clips where you can watch and observe her commentary and actions, it feels like you really are a detective. The most interesting part is the live action, with an actress that portrays the suspect in the footage - the talented Viva Seifert. The only ‘game’ part of this story is how you interact with her interviews with the police. It’s sharp, interesting, and one of the coolest games we’ve played in a very long time. If you’re a fan of cop & detective shows, take a step into the interrogation room and enjoy the ride!

Destiny XBOX ONE - $39.99

This month’s issue has been jampacked full of awesome space-related things, so we figured we’d give you one more. Destiny is your classic first-person adventure game, where you play a character you create yourself going on adventures around the universe. You’ve got your own spaceship, your own crew, and a story full of crazy monsters, places, and things to collect and see. If you’ve ever needed that perfect relaxer to play after school, practice, or work – Destiny is right for you.

4

You know what they say – save the scariest for last! Five Nights At Freddy’s is the game series that everyone is playing – first time I ever saw it was when my eight year old cousin was using it to scare his little sister. It’s a game full of jumps where you play a security guard that has the night shift at a Chucky Cheese-like restaurant full of animatronic figures. Trick is, they tend to move at night when you’re not looking, so its up to you to keep checking room by room to make sure the characters of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza don’t get the jump on you! In Five Nights 4, the story is a little different – instead of working at the restaurant, the figures are trying to get the jump on you in your very own home. It’s scary, fun, and always catches you off guard. If you don’t like being scared, give it to your friends to play so you can laugh when they jump! It’s definitely worth the 8 dollars for a few weeks of frightening fun!

PARROT MINIDRONES SPIDER - $99

To qualify to be an astronaut, you need a degree in some field of science or math, good eyesight, and around 1000 hours of flight experience. Makes sense, right? NASA definitely wants someone who knows how to fly and can see where they’re going. But if you’re like us and you don’t have a plane sitting in the yard, try out the Parrot Spider drone to practice your piloting skills. It’s easy to use, and fast to learn! The Spider is controlled via an app on your phone, so it’s easy to set up and take anywhere. It charges fast and the battery runs for about ten minutes, so it’s perfect to play on the go. One of the coolest features is that it comes with a camera on the bottom of the drone, so whether you want to take photos high above your neighbourhood or take your selfie game to the next level, it’s perfect for anything! For $99 the Spider is a great price for a starter drone; it will teach you the basics of flying - and if you really love it, maybe you could start saving up for that first jet plane! www.parrot.com/usa/products/rolling-spider

Auto-Girl Washes A Car!

IS IT A BIKE?! IS IT A NEIGHBOR’S VEHICLE?! IS IT YOUR KID SISTER’S SCOOTER?! NO! IT’S AUTO-GIRL WASHING A CAR!

BUCKETS AND BUBBLES You’ll need two buckets, one filled with plain water and the other with diluted car soap. You can use regular dish soap, but the finish won’t be quite as good. Try to get the water to a temperature for you to plunge your hands into comfortably.

WIND ‘EM UP… Make sure that the windows are firmly closed, and that the windshield wipers are pulled away from the window and are in a propped-up position.

…THEN PLUNGE THAT SPONGE!

Hang on just one second… …An article about washing a car? Um…isn’t that a little like how to butter bread? Or how to put on shoes? Has Auto-Girl stopped giving you life-enhancing, practical skills? As if! Nothing of the sort. It’s just that there’s more to washing a car than meets the eye. That is, if you want to do a really good job. And it’s not really worth doing anything else, right? We’re going to give the steps here to washing a car, but you can apply most of them pretty easily to whichever set of wheels you’re working on!

68

Okay, now the fun part! Grab a clean wash mitt or sponge, and plunge it into the soapy water. Start at the top and clean the car in sections, using a circular sweeping motion. Keep checking that you’re not picking up any tiny stones or pieces of grit, which might scratch the paint. Rinse out the sponge or mitt regularly in the plain water bucket. Once a section is washed, use a hose or bucket of fresh water to rinse the area, so that the soap doesn’t dry, leaving spots.

Car?!’ ‘You Washing Yourwhy. Yes, they’re just this, we don’t know People do seem to shout p, I am (prett y get bored of replying, ‘Ye being friendly, but if you it to see if it’ll car ’, try ‘No, I’m watering obviously) washing the afternoon… you know, break up the grow into a bus,’ just to,

Why should I wash my car? Simply brushing up against the dirt on your car or bike can scratch the paint. Salt and other nasty chemicals can then get into those scratches and eat away at the bodywork.

r Happy Ca Washing!

Fun Fact

According to the Intern ational Car Association wash (honestly, w e didn’t mak up!), 9 out of e it 10 drivers ad mitted sing in the car. A ing nother day at the car w ash …

THE NITTY GRITTY The lower parts of the car (and bike) are usually the dirtiest. Use a separate sponge if you have one and try to get as much of the dirt off as possible. Then using a soft brush – a clean dustpan brush would be fine – wash down the wheels and rinse using the hose, or a bucket of clean water.

RAGS, WAX AND VINEGAR! These final stages will send your car from ‘Clean? Yeah, I guess,’ to ‘Woah…I need shades to look at those wheels!’ Okay. So grab some soft rags - old tee shirts or out-grown clothes will do fine – and dry off the excess water. Use some wax, following the instructions on the container as different types can vary slightly. Then, dilute one part vinegar to two parts water, and clean the windows both inside and out, using soft rags/that old tee shirt we talked about, and a towel if necessary. Snap the wipers back into place, and stand back to admire your work!
