K E E P IN G H E A LT H Y BY CAROL POTTER

HYDRATION & DIET

We’re Just Like Fish, Right? in so many ways – to build new cells, to transport nutrients round our body, to keep our temperature just right. It also helps us get rid of all the, er, waste too!

TAKE A WATER BREAK It is recommended that we drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day – you may need even more if you are doing sports or running around! Water is so refreshing, but it’s fine to add some flavors too. Remember – eight glasses! Keep drinking!

FUEL UP AT MEAL TIME We all know we need balanced meals to keep us healthy. Unfortunately, we live in a society where this isn’t always easy! To avoid this pitfall make sure the calories you are eating really count. You want calories to pack in nutrients you require for the day, rather than wasting them on saturated fats or refined sugars. A good rule of thumb is to avoid processed foods. By only using fresh produce and proteins you will create a clean and healthy meal.

F

ueling your body is very similar to taking care of a pet fish. Now, this may sound strange – what do humans have in common with fish? There aren’t many similarities, but just as we take care of our pet fish, we must do the same for our bodies! In order to have a healthy pet fish you will want to feed it the right food and take care of its tank. A clean tank will keep the water healthy and appropriate food will give it lots of nutritious good stuff to help it grow! Similarly to fish, humans also require the appropriate food and clean water to thrive. On the other hand, we don’t always make the best decisions about what we stuff into our bodies! We have the free will to pick and choose what we eat and drink. It’s important we get it right – starting with water.

WATER OF LIFE It’s amazing - water makes up more than sixty percent of the human body and covers more than three quarters of planet Earth! Humans can live without food for a month or more, but without water, well, we’d be dead within a few days! Water keeps us alive. It is SOOOOOO important! Our bodies use water

4

Would you feed your pet fish chocolate chip pancakes? The answer should be “no”, because they would likely make your fish very sick! You should treat your body the same way. Enjoy treats from time to time, yes, but for the most part be good to your body. Your body requires certain nutrients and lots of water. Stick to these guidelines to be as healthy as possible.

SUMMER DIY *

BY CHERYL WALKER

For most of us, the summer tends to offer a little extra downtime than other times of the year. And we all know that, as glorious as summer weather can be, it has its off days. So the next time those late summer rainclouds roll in, or when you just need a break from the heat, consider a CRAFT DAY. Crafts help you express your creativity, and they can be a great way to spend quality time with a friend.

Customize Your Headphones

Make a Picture Frame with Clothespins All you need are clothes-

pins, cardboard, paint and glue to have a cute new

photo display on your wall. Simply cut a circle out of cardboard, paint and decorate as desired, and then hot glue painted clothespins around the edges. Hang it up and add your favorite photos, and your new frame is ready to go!

Using the same technique many of us have used for friendship bracelets, simple string can transform your headphone cords into fashionable and tangle-free accessories. Check out apartmenttherapy.com and type in ‘Chinese Staircase bracelet’ for really cool instructions. The process is easy enough to translate to your cords. Before you begin, make sure you measure the length of your headphones, though! You don’t want to end up without string before the cord is fully covered.

Scrapbooking for Beginners

Scrapbooking can be amazingly fun – and a great way to preserve memories of your family and friends! There are no hard rules when it comes to scrapbooking – if you’ve got stuff you want to remember forever and you can stick it in a book, then you’re pretty much there!

8

WHAT YOU NEED • Scrapbook – You can purchase these at numerous craft supply stores and warehouse stores • Scissors • Glue (preferred) or tape • Memorabilia – this includes photographs, ticket stubs, newspaper clippings, letters or even dried flowers. Anything that can be laid flat that you want to keep to remember • Extras – you can decorate your scrapbook with pictures, patterns, stickers, feathers – whatever you like!

GATHERING STUFF! To begin scrapbooking, you first want to choose what you want to put in it. This is the fun step. Go through old photo albums, lost drawers and that mess in your bedroom! Look out for ‘memory treasures’, like movie tickets, old birthday cards, certificates or awards. You could even include scents that remind you of a moment! Be careful though – scents don’t always keep their pleasant smell!

Gathering your memorabilia can sometimes be so much fun that could turn it into a scrapbook-making party!

PUTTING IT TOGETHER Sticking it all in can sometimes be messy – but such fun! There are two approaches to this step. There’s the organized approach – or collaged. Either way is sure to result in an awesome scrapbook to keep forever.

THE ORGANIZED APPROACH If you are interested in an organized scrapbook, you can use a ruler to line everything up neatly before sticking them in with glue. Once finished, you can decorate it with drawings and your chosen extras.

THE COLLAGED APPROACH For your collage, you don’t need a ruler. You may cut and stick everything as you please! Wherever you like! Whatever shapes you like! No rules! Once you are finished, throw in your extras for that final touch.

SAN O G E DI

California, hands down, is one of the best places to live if you love action sports. You can go east to ski and snowboard in the mountains, or head to the lakes to kayak and paddleboard. You can even pick any beach to try all the water sports our coasts have to offer. And the best place in California to enjoy all of these? San Diego, baby!

C

onfession: Priority Girl is based in San Diego so we’re a little biased! But in all honesty, if you’ve ever wanted to try out water sports there is so much to do out there. There are places for lessons and rentals all over the boardwalk, so you’ll be sure to find what you need. Once you’re on the water there’s always somebody nice to get your back on your feet if you fall. Today we’ll be giving you the best water sports to try - and the best places to go in the San Diego area. We hope to see you out there, and we might even help you up!

PADDLE BOARDING (SUP) Paddleboarding is kind of like a blend of kayaking and surfing. You stand on a big wide surfboard, and use a paddle to move through the water. You can do it in the ocean, bays, lakes and rivers but wherever the water is flat and slow is the best. It’s super relaxing and easy to learn – and the only thing you have to worry about is balance. Plus, when you want to take a break, you can always just lay down and relax. Spending a day paddle boarding is the best way to tan, nap and move your bed at the same time! AVERAGE RENTAL PRICE

Per hour: $15.00, Per day: $60.00 Difficulty ✮

SURFING KAYAKING Kayaking is another fun water sport where your arms get a workout but you never work up a sweat. You can kayak in lakes, rivers, and oceans. There are kayaks made for the ocean that can handle the choppier water better, but if you’re not going too far out it’s not a problem. When the sky is clear and the water is smooth, the yak life is really one of the best. It’s so much fun you’ll be looking on Amazon to buy your own after you bring the rentals back. AVERAGE RENTAL PRICE

SINGLE KAYAK Per Hour: $13.00, Per Day: $44.00 TANDEM KAYAK Per Hour: $18.00, Per Day: $60.00 Difficulty ✮ ✮

Surfing is a little more hands on than kayaking and Paddle boarding – and even though the waves can be mean, that joy of catching a wave and not flipping your board is one of the best feelings. It’s not hard to learn, even though it may seem intimidating – it’s really all about balance and staying close to shore. The rush of being pushed by the ocean is really amazing. Take a lesson and hang with surfers for the day and you can really learn so much about having fun. Be brave and make sure to wax your board. AVERAGE RENTAL PRICE

Per Hour: $5.00, Per Day: $20.00 Difficulty ✮ ✮ ✮

WAVERUNNERS, POWERBOATS & CATAMARANS We grouped these together because they’re group sports – fun for the whole family if you’ve got a responsible adult around that really knows how to swim. Catamarans, like any sailboat, are an absolute blast to take out to sea but you’ve really got to know what you’re doing. Take lessons and the instructors go out with you a few times and show you the ropes. It’s more expensive, sure, but learning the tricks of catching the wind with sails is incredible. The same goes with taking Waverunners (jetskis), and powerboats. Having an instructor or trained adult is the difference between a good time or not. 5 stars of difficulty and fun! It Ain’t Easy Being Green:

BY ALEX GREEN

Four Ways We Can Help the Environment Today “Eight million tons of waste was dumped into the sea in 2010 alone.”

F

or a lot of us recycling is that thing you’re really supposed to do, but really end up forgetting about. We want to change that. Every person that recycles is making a difference – and there’s tons of ways to help! Just like running a 5K for charity, or volunteering to take Grandma to lunch, creating a green environment takes a little work but gives you a warm feeling deep down. Everyday we’re seeing the effects of a world damaged by people mistreating the environment. Landfills are overflowing into natural reserves in America. In Ghana, electronic-waste dumps are burning and spreading toxic fumes across the continent. The Huffington Post recently reported that Montana oil companies have leaked thousands of gallons of oil into national parks, like the Yellowstone, to cut costs on proper disposal. According to National Geographic, eight million tons of waste was dumped into the sea in 2010 alone, causing hungry sea lions to wash up on shore looking for escape and food. Scientists say that that number could increase ten times over unless the world improves garbage disposal. We’re making the world sound depressing, but here’s the great news – we can change that and keep the sea lions happy. Sure, our generation is the tweeting, right swiping, double Instagramming a day generation, but we’ve also led the charge on creating equality for everybody. We’ve helped start revolutions in Egypt with Facebook, fought for women’s rights around the world with hashtags, and proved that love has no boundaries in the

18

courts with same sex marriages. Seems only fair that we take care of the Earth next! So let’s take the next step in helping the world by changing the environment. Here’s a few ways you can create a green environment for everybody – Grandma, the sea lions, and you!

1

RECYCLING: IT HELPS REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION It’s not just putting empty soda cans into different garbage cans! You can also dispose of electronic waste like old printers, speakers, and that old iPod Touch from middle school. It’s easy to do and most places will drive and pick it up from your house, and even pay for it. It starts there and with every few hundred pounds of plastic and metals recycled, we’re cutting down production costs of new materials. With those reductions in costs, major companies reinvest their money in better wages for employees and better quality products.

2

WATER CONSERVATION

The drought in California has definitely been a wakeup call for all of us. It’s not improving any time soon, so whether you live in Cali or not, we can work together to improve water conservation. Try turning off the water while you brush your teeth - and keep showers shorter than fifteen minutes.

3

AROUND THE HOUSE ELECTRICITY MANAGEMENT We know it’s hot with summer in full swing, but it’s alright to leave the AC off and relax outside. Keeping the electricity costs down around the house is a great way to help the environment. Whether it’s turning off the AC, unplugging outlets when they’re not in use, or turning off the lights, you can help. Besides, who wants AC when you can soak up some rays outside?

4

REUSABLE CUPS AND GROCERY BAGS

Like a lot of people, I’ve got a terrible coffee addiction so I go to Dunkin Donuts a few times a day. I may not be able to control how much coffee I drink, but I can control how much I spend by using a reusable coffee mug. The great thing is that most places charge you less no matter how big your cup is. Not only are you helping out the environment by reducing the amount of plastic cups coffee shops go through, you’re saving money too. Express yourself with your mug – I’ve been using a Starbucks mug from London for the last year and everyday people ask me about it. Finally cool because of a cup! Bringing your own bags to the grocery store is also a great trend – less plastic bags end up in the street and in the trash, keeping the environment looking beautiful.

PICK WHOLE FOODS When in doubt, choosing foods in their most natural form is the best way to stay healthy. If a food looks the way it did when it grew from the earth, then it’s in its healthiest state – and it’s easiest for your body to digest and get nutrients from. Luckily, in the summer your pick of fresh fruits and vegetables is even greater than usual, so take advantage! Check out the table at the right to get examples of healthy choices.

PAY ATTENTION TO FOOD GROUPS The five major food groups that you need to incorporate into your everyday diet are protein, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and fats - which include everyone’s favorites; sweets and desserts! The main goal is to keep it balanced! Check out the picture above to give you an idea of how much of each group you need. The only exception is veggies – you can’t really overdo them, so don’t hesitate to eat up!

AVOID SUGARS Sugar, especially processed sugars like in dessert products, can really wreak havoc on your health. Not only does excess sugar intake increase your risk of diabetes, but it can even change your hormones and age your skin more quickly. If you have a sweet tooth, try switching your desserts to a piece of dark chocolate or sugar-free yogurt with berries.

SNACK ON PROTEIN The best way to keep your appetite at bay is to swap carbohydrate-rich snacks like chips and cookies with protein-based snacks instead. Reach for raw almonds, hard-boiled eggs, and hummus when you get that middle-of-the-day slump, and you’re bound to have more energy, and less of a sugar crash.

PREP FRUITS AND VEGGIES The easiest way to make sure you get in enough fresh fruits and vegetables is to take the time to prep and cut them. Pick a day, like Sunday, and prepare the week’s worth all at the same time. Then, once you have them ready, it will be easy to snag some cucumber slices from the fridge, or freshly washed strawberries on your way out the door.

BY CHERYL WALKER

1 Running Builds Bone and Muscle

More than many other exercises, running increases bone density and strength, especially in the legs and spine. It also uses the largest muscle groups in your body, which is why it’s easy to break into a healthy sweat.

2 Increases Reflexes

People who run regularly have been shown to have quicker reflexes than those who don’t. This is because, especially when running outside, you have to be very aware of your surroundings, and all of that attention fine-tunes your mind. It’s a great way to improve the body-mind connection—and take in the changing scenery.

3 Improves Mood

Because running is cardio exercise, meaning it works your heart, it sends your body a boost of happy hormones called endorphins. That’s why people who run often mention the “runner’s high” feeling. It’s been proven to be even stronger than some of the most powerful mood-enhancing drugs, without any of the dangerous side effects.

4 Running Helps You Live Longer

Studies have shown that any regular cardio exercise extends your lifespan, even if you’re overweight or suffering from a range of illnesses. The World Health Organization suggests that, just by exercising regularly, you can extend your life anywhere between 2-8 years on average!

5 It’s Easier Than You Think

If you’ve never been on a run before, don’t stress! Alternating walking/running gives you all of the same benefits as running for the same amount of time. Start slow and work your way up to longer stretches of running each time you get yourself outside. Just make sure you’re always challenging yourself to improve.

Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3×3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

This popular Japanese puzzle game is based on the logical placement of numbers. A game of logic, Sudoku doesn’t require any calculation nor special math skills; all that is needed are brains and concentration. If you play Sudoku daily, you will soon start to see improvements in your concentration and overall brain power. Within no time Sudoku will be your favorite game! The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9×9 grid with single digit numbers so that each column, row, and 3×3 section contain the numbers between 1 and 9. At the

Now, look for columns or grids that have 2 of the same number. Logically, there must be a 3rd copy of the same number in the only remaining 9-cell section. Summer is an exhilarating time of year, a time that young girls can spend making a new best friend, enjoying a camp experience, starting a first job, or maybe embarking on a family road trip. Whatever the summer may entail, the savvy young woman should be sure to have the perfect summer skin routine. The options may seem daunting, but fear no more. Your summer skin routine can be simple. As simple as putting on a tank top and jean shorts – enjoying summer with effortless, flawless skin.

SUDS SUMMER UP During the summer you may find yourself sweating under the intense sun or striving otherwise, hard at work. All of this extra heat, work, and sweat equates to dulling skin. Include exfoliation in your skin care routine to slough away dead skin, and clear your pores for a healthy glow. Hydrating your skin during this oh so hot season is crucial, too. Find a lightweight moisturizer you like for

30

the daytime, and then in the evening (after washing your face) use a more intense moisturizer. Another way you can nourish your skin is by drinking plenty of water. Water is your skin’s best friend and will keep you looking and feeling your very best!

KEEP MAKE-UP SIMPLE After you have washed your face, what is the next step in your regime? If your answer is make-up, we are here to tell you that it is key to update your beauty routine throughout the seasons! What your skin craves and needs in winter, may not be so appropriate for spring or summer. Just as you have updated your skin care, you will make make-up adjustments as well. The best look for this season is a natural look. Incorporate a tinted SPF moisturizer or foundation to get sun protection and coverage. Find a bronzer and/or blush you like to accentuate your natural radiance. You can finish this simple look off with waterproof mascara and hydrating lip balm. This simple make-up plan will keep you beautiful and on-the-go!

For the daytime you should use a lightweight moisturizer on your face with a high SPF to keep your sensitive skin protected. Girls wearing make-up can also take advantage of tinted moisturizers and foundations with SPF included. Keeping your body’s skin protected is important too. When you are exposed to the sun be sure to wear the appropriate SPF and apply per instructions.

Kick off your summer with the perfect summer skin routine with these easy tips. Keep your skin clean, your make-up simple, and your skin protected. Develop your own personalized routine with products at your own local drug or department store. The options are plentiful, but just remember to keep it simple. SELF-ESTEEM How To Get It, & Hold Onto It For Good

32

PR I O R I T Y G I R L | AU G U S T 2015 | p r i o r i t yg i r l m a g a zi n e .c o m

Remember, there is only one you – be nice to her!

T

he way we perceive ourselves affects every aspect of our lives. From the careers we choose, to the people we end up with, and even to the food we eat—most of our decisions stem at least partially from our levels of self-esteem. Unfortunately, studies show that many more girls than boys have low self-esteem, and that more than 70% of high school girls avoid normal daily activities (including going to school) when their self-esteem is low. Worst of all, of those girls with low levels of self worth, 75% reported to engaging in harmful activities like self-injury, smoking, drinking, or adopting an eating disorder. So what is this all-powerful self-esteem, really? Essentially, self-esteem is made up of all of the thoughts and feelings you have about yourself. It’s the way you see the person in the mirror, and the way you talk to her about the way she looks, performs, and lives her life. According to research, that girl in the mirror is often in great need of tender love and care. Use these tips to help you see yourself the way you deserve.

ACCEPT COMPLIMENTS When you have low self-esteem it can be hard to believe that the people who compliment you are being honest. Even if you still don’t believe them at first, try simply changing your pattern of disagreeing with compliments to graciously accepting them. Eventually this new healthy pattern will help you to realize that you get complimented because you deserve it.

STOP NEGATIVE SELF-TALK The way you “talk” to yourself when you’re alone plays a huge role in your level of self-esteem. Try to recognize and break any negative thought patterns you might have in your daily routine. For example, you may say negative things to yourself when you walk in front of the mirror, or when you sit next to smart peers in class. Because your inner voice is always with you, those patterns add up, and you want to make sure that the majority of what it says to you is positive rather than negative.

AVOID UNREALISTIC IMAGES By now most people know that the women we see in magazines, online, and on TV are not realistic representations of beauty. Not only do these women have excess amounts of money to funnel into their appearance, their images are extremely altered before they finally reach you. Each time you see a photo that makes you feel insecure, stop to think: Is that image realistic? More often than not, the answer is “no,” which gives you and your self-esteem permission to disregard it and move on.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FRIENDS People who put you down and make you feel badly about yourself are not good friends. So make sure that you limit, or even eliminate, the people in your life who constantly tell you what’s “wrong” with you rather than what’s “right.” If those people are family members and your ability to get away from them is limited, remember to take their words with a grain of salt: Humans are cruel to each other when they are hurting, so what they say is not a reflection of you, but of their own insecurities.

Embrace What Makes you Unique

Especially when we are young, the things that make us unique are often ou r biggest insecurities. Ou r freckles, for example, or the size of our noses an d the quirk y ways we spe ak can bring us down when we compare them to others . To help your self-esteem, try to pinpoint what it is abo ut you that sets you apart and see it for it’s positive quali ties rather than negative. No t only is standing out an asset, it’s essential for succes s.

LIMIT NEGATIVE SOCIAL MEDIA The social media age makes it easier and easier to compare your looks and accomplishments to others. Limit your time on social media in lieu of being with friends in person, and make sure to remember that everybody is trying to make themselves look as impressive as possible online, and that result is what you see. We are all different, with different strengths and weaknesses, and paying too much attention to someone else’s will not help you become the person you want to be.

ermaid hair, dip-dyes, or fashion colors – whatever you want to call it – colored hair is in! Pastel pinks, vibrant blues and neon greens are all making a statement in hair trends this summer – and they’re all styles you can easily wear – as long as you do it right. But before you venture into the land of colored hair, do your research. What color do you want? Will you be dyeing all your hair? Just the tips? Or doing highlights throughout? Having colored hair is a lot of work and a monthly upkeep if you want it looking nice - it’s a commitment you have to be willing to take.

A QUICK SPLASH? Picking a brand of color to use always depends on how long you want the color to last. If you only want a fun color for a short while then go with brands like Manic Panic, Splat, or Amplified. These brands are usually sold at a local beauty store like Sally’s and aren’t terribly expensive. ASK The Professionals We sat down with independent stylist, Haley Twitchell, and asked her a bit more about looking after our crazy bright colors this summer: CAN I SWIM WITH COLORED HAIR?

The best simple trick to keeping color while swimming is to actually get your hair wet before you go in the pool - and put conditioner in it so that the chlorine doesn’t actually penetrate your hair cuticle. WHAT ABOUT THE SEA, OR LAKES?

Do the same thing. If you are a regular swimmer, your color will fade faster than normal but the conditioner will help protect your color from anything in the water. WHAT ABOUT SWIM CAPS? CAN THEY SAVE MY HAIR?

CLEAN HEAD OF HAIR! To ensure that your color will last and is as bright as you want it to be, you might consider hiring a professional, which will obviously cost a bit of money. But if you’re saving those cents and want to go it alone, make sure you wash your hair in cold water - and use a sulfite-free shampoo and conditioner. Hot water will make the color strip faster and sulfite-free shampoo helps hold the color longer. The best brand to use is Redken Color Extended Magnetics Sulfate-Free shampoo. This will help keep its color bright and shiny. It is a bit on the expensive side, but the bottles are huge and they should last you about two months! You can find Redken or any sulfite free shampoo at beauty stores, like Ulta.

Using GOOD PRODUCTS is key for great hair. Your hair is an investment, so take care of it!

SALON BRAND products are always the best – and stay away from fruity smelling products at the drug stores.

Be careful with HOT TOOLS – don’t use them daily, and do use them correctly.

With these AMAZING TIPS, your hair is sure to be looking fun and fabulous during the summer months.

Happy Coloring Everyone!

Swim caps can help sometimes. If you have thick or really long hair, it will probably still get damp if the swim cap is too full and can’t get tight to the head. WHAT CONDITIONER BRANDS DO YOU RECOMMEND TO USE?

My favorite brands are Pureology, Redken, and TIGI - depending on what price point you are looking at. Just always make sure it is specifically for color-treated hair. IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO PROTECT IT FROM SUN-FADING?

There are products such as It’s A 10 leave-in conditioner spray which you can use before styling, or when air drying, that protects your hair from UV - and even humidity. WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT A DRY SCALP, OR BRITTLE HAIR THIS SUMMER?

Good shampoo and conditioner is the best starting point. I also suggest using a deep conditioner or conditioning hair mask once a week. Most hair care lines make one, I usually suggest It’s A 10 Miracle Hair Mask or their Miracle Deep Conditioner.

TIPS & TRICKS To Confidently Tackling The MANICURE World BY CAROL POTTER

W

hen you change your hairstyle or try on a new outfit, you often feel better than usual. This feeling isn’t about how you look, more so it’s a feeling that stems from pampering yourself. One way young girls can feel recharged and glammed up is with a fresh manicure. A trip to the nail salon can be a great way to unwind, and a DIY manicure can leave you feeling great, too. Although it may seem difficult to navigate the salon or to paint your nails on your own, with the right tips, tricks, and knowledge you will be confidently tackling the manicure world.

DIY POLISHING TIPS & TRICKS When painting your nails at home you are able to really explore nail art ideas and inspirations. The nail art may not always turn out exactly how you imagined, but with practice and trial you will find success. Some fun options you can try at home are 3-D nail kits, nail decals, and traditional polishing. When visiting your local drug store you can find many kits and polish options to explore. Select your favorite option for your next manicure. Also, always be sure to have plenty of nail polish, Q-tips, and cotton on hands for your manicure. These items will help you with perfecting your work and easier cleanup.

SO YOU’RE GOING TO THE SALON... What a treat! A trip to the nail salon is a replenishing and relaxing experience. When you decide to treat yourself to a manicure you will need to select a salon. Look for recommendations online, or perhaps ask a friend or family member who may know of some reliable options. Call ahead to see if your salon takes appointments, some places do and others don’t, but it is always

38

best to check. When you arrive at the salon you should check in with the desk and select a nail color – perhaps you already have a particular color or design in mind. When your manicurist calls you it is time to enjoy. Sit back and allow your manicurist to work his or her magic, polishing your hands perfectly. Once your manicure is complete you will want to let your nails dry. Nothing is worse than hastily leaving and ruining your new nails. Another tip to help you with nicks and bumps is paying your manicurist before they polish your nails.

LATEST TRENDS When you are stumped for a new nail polish, style or design, you can always look for outside inspiration. Whether you find a polish in a store, a picture in a magazine, or a patterned wall in a house – these can all inspire your next nail design. Here are some of the latest trends in nails… • MARBLE Using a combination of distilled water, nail polish, and a toothpick – ‘DIY-ers’ are able to create marble effect on their nails in any color they can imagine. Explore the Internet for tutorials, videos, and plentiful information on how to get this fashion-forward look. • OMBRE Much like the very popular hairstyle and fashion trend, ombre, we have also seen this design used on nails. Ask your manicurist for ombre nails for a look of one color gradually blending from dark to light. You can also get this look at home with some research and practice. • TEXTURE All kinds of textured nail options are available over the counter and at the salon. TWITTER

Facebook is the classic way to stay in touch with what your friends are up to. People don’t post as much as they used to, but it’s the best place to upload tons of photos and tag all of your friends. Plus, it’s great for setting up events like organizing birthday parties or meetups, or even finding events to go. And to be eligible to sign up for Facebook, you need to be at least thirteen years old. www.facebook.com

Definitely the way to hear people’s voices all over the world, Twitter is for you if you enjoy hearing what people are talking about – whether it’s your friends or celebrities, jokes, stories, questions, anything on your mind you can post on Twitter as long as it’s 140 characters or less. Trust us, that limit helps keep everything #short&sweet. Twitter, unlike most social media sites, doesn’t have an age limit. www.twitter.com

SNAPCHAT

INSTAGRAM

Snapchat, like Instagram, is also made as an app so to enjoy it head to the App Store or Google Play. Snapchat is for those moments you want to send to your friends, but don’t want to last forever. You can take a picture of anything, add a caption and draw on it, and send it to anybody in your friend list. Here’s the trick though – you set how long each ‘snap’ lasts for a maximum of 10 seconds, so once time’s up you can never see it again. Whether you want to say “Hi” to a friend or capture a crazy moment, Snapchat is perfect for bite-sized fun. Also, Snapchat requires you to be 13 to use the app, and 18 for other features like sending friends money. www.snapchat.com

Instagram was made as an app, so the website just leads you to download it. Never fear though, it’s available on both iPhones and Androids. Instagram is for the photos that you want to share, but are special enough that you don’t want them to get lost in a photo album. Whether it’s that one great photo from a concert, a wedding, or even just a solid #tbt, Instagram is tons of fun to scroll through. For Instagram, like Facebook – you need to be at least thirteen years old. www.instagram.com

TUMBLR Tumblr is different from the other apps we’ve mentioned, but it’s amazing in its own way. Here’s how it works: you can create a blog and put anything you want on it. Pictures, text, videos, gifs, whatever is on your mind. If people like what you post, they can follow you, and vice versa. There are blogs for literally anything –TV shows, sports, cars, celebrities, games, movies and more. There’s so much to find on Tumblr you’ll always have fun. For Tumblr, you need to be at least thirteen years old. www.tumblr.com

TIPS FOR

ACTUALLY

BY ALEX GREEN

BEING SOCIAL

WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

W

hen I was in high school, one of the ways we thought kids were ‘cool’ was the number of Facebook friends they had. Below 300 was alright, around 700 was average, and anybody in the 1000s HAD to be super cool. So with that random number in mind, there was this rush for students to add as many other kids as they could to seem more popular. You’d get friend requests from kids that would be bully you in the hallways; ones you had never seen before, and tons of fake accounts that pretended to be cute guys or girls. Nobody really knew each other, or cared to actually be friends – which is pretty sad for a social media site. I can’t lie; I was part of that crazy dash too. There was this girl in theater that I had a major crush on and was terrified to talk

46

to her like most teenage boys are. I didn’t know her at all, just found out her name from a friend and tried to add more people to my Facebook so I’d seem more interesting. To this day I never said more than a sentence to her. In the end, she went with a guy that actually asked her out in person. Once I saw that little ‘in a relationship’ status pop on my feed, my heart sank and I sneaked away to stalk her photos. Embarrassing, I know. It’s one of those goofy memories I laugh about now and tell at parties but at the time it sucked. But that taught me something really important about social media – it’s really not that social if you don’t leave it. And so with that embarrassing story behind us and a few more ahead, I want to give out some tips on how to use social media to actually be social. Not only that, but how to be smart with it too and make sure anything you post doesn’t come back to haunt you.

1

It’s Not About the Numbers, It’s About the People

If there’s one thing I learned from that moment, it’s that it seriously doesn’t matter at all how many Facebook friends you have. Really, I mean it. If you haven’t hit this point yet, there will definitely come a time where you don’t want to see people you don’t know or care about complain about their lives and problems. It’s actually really refreshing to clear out your friend list for the people you do care about. If there are people giving you grief on Facebook or Twitter, don’t feel afraid to delete them. The smile and relief you get is always worth it.

2

Don’t complain about how everyone else is so interesting, find friends and do something!

We’ve all been caught in that loop of looking at people’s Instagram posts when things in our lives are kind of slow. You think ‘God, everyone seems WAY more fun than me’. But let it inspire you, not depress you. Look for motivation in what people are doing and try to expand your mind and have fun! It’s great to see all of the fun stuff people are doing that you’d like to do. It could be beaches or parks you’ve never been to, or new restaurants and places to visit. Even checking out celebrity ‘grams is pretty cool because it can get you motivated to work hard and do cool things. If you want to exercise, the Rock’s Instagram gets you pumped.

3

Keep Personal Problems Off Social Media

Sometimes it’s hard walking away from frustrating days and annoying people, but try not to tweet about them or post on Facebook about it. It’s never a good look to subtweet anybody and insult them because it’ll only lead to more drama or problems later on. Nobody likes dealing with passive aggressive friends. Just know you don’t have to make a public display when somebody frustrates you, just text them or

DM them. I know, easier said than done, but if you keep it private they will too. Always let your feelings be heard, but don’t make it public. When it comes to teachers, counselors, or other authority figures, if it’s not positive don’t post about it. You really have no idea when it might come back and sneak up on you, whether somebody in your feed tells on you, or your privacy settings aren’t locked down.

4

Privacy Settings & Inappropriate Content

5

Utilize, But Don’t Overuse

Speaking of things that might sneak up on you – keep any type of inappropriate activities off your social media. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or otherwise. It sounds like something Mom would say, but it’s a good move to keep bottles and cups of whatever nature out of photos. Many employers will ask you to log into your Facebook or Twitter profile in front of them, or they’ll do some digging of their own before you know it. It’s extremely important to set all of your profiles to private so you know what you post stays in your possession. That goes for photos in your snap stories too, because you won’t always know when somebody screenshots your pictures. There are tons of apps that can save them without the sender knowing, so trust who you communicate with and be smart.

Let’s be honest – nobody loves going through 300 second long snap stories, even if you’re having the time of your life. Even worse, if it’s 300 seconds of you playing with your dog. Utilize social media to let people know what you’re up to, but don’t overuse it. If it’s an Instagram post, keep to one a day. Not even Beyoncé breaks that rule. Live outside your phone, and just enjoy people’s company. They appreciate it way more. The same goes with tweets, because there’s no way anything that crazy is going on in life that you’ll need to tweet dozens of times an hour. Unless your jokes for an awards show are on point.

We hope these tips help everyone make good choices with what they choose to do with social media – it’s not just about being smart with it, it’s about putting down the phone and living life. If you want to meet people, do awesome things, and have fun – it’s a lot easier to text or talk in person. And yes, we all get nervous asking people to do things whether it’s in a group or not, but it never hurts to ask, and the more you do it the more confident you’ll be.

HEADS UP! $0.99 – iOS/ANDROID

Heads Up! is a fun game that the lovely Ellen DeGeneres plays on her show. It gets people laughing no matter where you are. Here’s how it works – there are 18 categories to choose from including celebrities, movies, music, animals, accents, and even characters from movies. Once you pick a category, you hold your phone to your head and whatever shows up on the screen, your friends in front of you have to act it out and you guess what it is. Get it right and shake your phone for the next question and answer as many as you can in two minutes. The best part is that the game records your friends on the camera so you can play it back and save it. I played this in line at Six Flags and we ended up getting half of the park involved. It’s definitely worth the $0.99.

One of the big phone games last year was 2048. If it doesn’t ring a bell, it involved adding numbers together on a grid until you finally reached a super huge number – 2048. Trust us; it’s far more exciting than it sounds, and Threes! has the same concept and does it even bigger. Slide numbers that are the same together to add them up, and keep going until you beat the high score of all your friends. Give it a shot while you’re waiting for a train, on line, or even in a plane and you’ll have everyone hooked.

MONEYGRABBER!

FREE – iOS/ANDROID

Like anyone, money for us is hard to make and easy to spend, so why not play a game that lets you collect virtual money? In Moneygrabber! dollars float to the bottom of the screen and you have to tap them to collect them. The more money you collect, the more you can level up so more money falls from the screen! You can then customize your Moneygrabber character, and make more money playing mini-games. It’s one of those games you’ll be playing in your lap during class and not even really understand why. Oddly addicting.

BLADES OF BRIM FREE – iOS

From the makers of Subway Surfer, Blades of Brim is an endless running game like Temple Run and Minion Rush. It doesn’t have any cute minions, but Blades is insanely fun. Not only are there tons of different levels to explore, you can fight monsters, collect new weapons and armor, and customize your runner in any way possible. The game looks beautiful and has this Disney charm to its characters so don’t be surprised if you spend all day playing it.

FALLOUT SHELTER FREE – iOS

If you ever played The Sims or Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the day you’ll love this one. In Fallout Shelter, you’re the overseer of an underground city that needs to be built and managed, piece by piece. It’s exciting, confusing, and interesting to learn all the cool little details about building your own world. THE TOP TEN

BY CHERYL WALKER

’ WOMEN S

COLLEGES Thanks in part to their emphasis on math and science and their strong sense of community, many prospective students are realizing that women-only colleges are a great opportunity to get a leg up in society. And, since 1996, women have continued to earn more bachelor’s degrees than their male counterparts, which can make female campuses even more of an academically driven environment than co-eds. Here is a list of the top ten women’s colleges in the U.S., based on quality of student life, academic rankings, and name recognition. Use it to help you pick your best fit – as the application season quickly approaches. BARNARD COLLEGE

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK Known as the sister school to the ivyleague powerhouse Columbia University, Barnard is the most competitive of all American women’s colleges. Barnard is much more urban than the other women’s colleges, as its four acre campus stretches along bustling downtown Manhattan. Barnard also boasts an amazing student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1—which is twice as intimate as the national average. FAST FACTS:

Campus: Urban, 4 acres Size: 2,489 undergraduates Colors: Blue and White Mascot: Millie the Dancing Bear

BRYN MAWR COLLEGE

BRYN MAWR, PENNSYLVANIA Located in the outskirts of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr College is a unique women’s college because the graduate program is co-ed. Women studying here are also free to take classes at the equally-elite Swathmore College nearby, giving them the ability to customize their education experience. FAST FACTS:

Campus: Suburban, 135 acres Student Size: 1,307 undergraduates Colors: Yellow and White Mascot: Owl

CEDAR CREST COLLEGE ALLENTOWN PENNSYLVANIA

Led by one of the few black female presidents, Cedar Crest is a great choice for the student that wants a calm suburban environment and excellent academic quality. Cedar Crest College is also well known for its unique tactic for making freshwomen welcome: Each new student is assigned a ‘big sister’ who serves as a mentor. FAST FACTS:

Campus: Suburban, 84 acres Student Size: 1,800 undergraduates Colors: Yellow and White Mascot: Falcon

MILLS COLLEGE

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA Mills is another urban option as it is nestled on the east end of San Francisco Bay. Known for its environmental efforts and consistent high academic performance, Mills is also one of the oldest women’s colleges, having started as a seminary for women before Stanford was founded. Like Bryn Mawr, there are some men on campus as the graduate program is co-ed. FAST FACTS:

Campus: Urban, 135 acres Student Size: 997 undergraduates Colors: Yellow, White, and Navy Mascot: Cyclones

COOL About CHEMISTRY?

“Chemistry is important because it helps us to understand the world around us and knowing how it works allows us to make it better.” Erupting volcanoes, melting metals, mind-blowing reactions and awesome explosions probably make chemistry the most exciting of the science subjects. But why is it that so few women go on to take up chemistry-related jobs when they are older? Jeremy Barron talks to Dr. Louisa Hope-Weeks about being a Professor of Chemistry, and why she thinks more girls should study the subject.

56

WHERE ARE ALL THE STEM GIRLS? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. According to national statistics*, women make up nearly half of the total workforce of the United States, yet only a small percentage enjoy careers in STEM jobs. Dr. Hope-Weeks thinks this is because girls are not encouraged to pursue these careers in the same way boys are. “Traditionally boys are told that they will do well in STEM fields,” Dr. HopeWeeks explained. “Girls on the other hand are told that these jobs are demanding and that they will have to be more ‘man-like’ to succeed.” Dr. Hope-Weeks believes this simply isn’t the case, saying that if girls have an interest in science or maths then they will perform just as well as boys. Having being appointed as Professor of Chemistry at the ridiculously young age of 28, she knows what she is talking about. “Also,” Dr. Hope-Weeks continues, “since there are so few women in these jobs it’s difficult for young women to see how it can be done.” * US Department of Labor

Career Q&A WE ASKED DR HOPE-WEEKS ABOUT CHEMISTRY AND WHAT SHE DOES WHY IS CHEMISTRY IMPORTANT?

Chemistry is important because it helps us to understand the world around us and knowing how it works allows us to make it better. Without chemistry there would be no base materials for almost everything you see around you. There would also be no new drugs. It’s hard to imagine a world without the next drug to improve our lives or stop diseases. WHY SHOULD YOUNG PEOPLE STUDY CHEMISTRY?

Chemistry is a base science which opens doors to careers in medicine, nanoscience and technology – and it’s never boring! WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR JOB?

As a Professor of Chemistry, I teach on a Tuesday and Thursday. The rest of the week I spend working on research projects. It’s always fun to find out a new fact or something that has never been made before.

Chemistry Careers There are loads of cool chemistry jobs out there. Here are our top 3:

Forensic Scientist Help police solve crimes by studying evidence at the scene, like blood, body fluids, fibres from clothing and other strange substances. Earning average: $55,000 Earning potential: $95,000 www.work.chron.com

WHO IS THIS GIRL?! Hillari Hampton is a San Diego native that has been singing since she was very small, but has also been playing the drums since she was 8. At the grand old age of 11, she has performed many times – including school variety shows, with a band, at the Kids Expo in Del Mar, and even at The Hard Rock Café!

LET’S QUESTION HER! We sat down with Hillari and asked her all about her music career. WHAT IS THE FIRST SONG THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER SINGING?

“Single Ladies” by Beyonce, when I was 4. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO PLAY THE DRUMS?

The drums looked cool and I thought I wanted to learn how to play them. WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVORITE PERFORMANCE?

My very first talent show at school. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PERFORMANCE?

I don’t dislike any of them. Performing is fun! DO YOU GET NERVOUS WHEN YOU ARE PERFORMING?

No, I just pretend like no one is there and sing or drum my heart out. WHEN DO YOU PRACTICE?

Drum Trivia This School Rocks! If you want to play an ins trument or love singing like Hi llari, make sure you check out som e lessons in your area. One good place to try is The School Of Ro ck: ww w.sandiego.schoolo frock.com

Rick Allen, famed drummer from rock band Def Leppard, played the drums – even though he only had one arm after an accident in 1984! An old slang term for a drum-kit was ‘Suitcase’! Ever since the 1920s, brushes have often been used instead of drumsticks to get that softer sound – especially in jazz and blues bands.

I sing in the car every morning on the way to school. Plus, I take drum and singing lessons once a week. I’m supposed to practice drums everyday too. IF YOU AREN’T A SINGER OR A DRUMMER WHEN YOU GROW UP, WHAT WILL YOU BE?

Fashion designer. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT?

Right now I am playing a lot of Joan Jett and getting ready to perform. I’m also thinking about auditioning for a new band.

select a few of your photos, and publish them in Priority Girl magazine, and on the website, alongside the winning picture, choosing the ones which we feel best capture the theme in your own unique and inspiring way. This month, the theme is ‘Favorite Book, Favorite Place’, and we’ve really enjoyed seeing your take on this theme. There’s nothing better than curling up with a book and losing yourself inside the pages. Actually…there is something better, getting a photo of it, and sending it to us! And remember – this is your take on the theme, so get creative! Get inspired by the fabulous photos on ‘Favorite Book, Favorite Place’, and start thinking about sending in your shots to be included in next month’s magazine all about being a good sport!

First up, we have a peaceful portrait of Gabriela, age 7, lost in her current favorite book ‘Miranda To The Rescue’, snuggled in her favorite corner of the sofa. The photograph was taken by Gabriela’s brother, Isaac, who has just been given his first camera! Great shot, Isaac!

Grace, age 10, took this shot in her neighbor’s garden. “I really, really want to keep chickens, and until my parents agree, I read ‘Chicken Coups For The Soul’ in my friend’s garden. I have my feet up and love watching the little fluffy chicks racing around their mothers!” she said.

Thanks to everyone who contributed this month – it’s great fun looking through your fantastic work! We have lots of exciting themes coming up over the next months, but feel free to get in touch and suggest a photographic theme – you’ll get a special mention in Priority Girl if we use it!

Next month’s theme is ‘Be A Good Sport!’ and we’d love to see

you maybe taking part in your main event, supporting your favorite team, or maybe meeting a sports hero! Send your original work (by hash tagged photos on Twitter, Instagram, shareable link or JPEG), by September 21, 2015 , to photocontest@prioritygirlmagazine.com with Photography Competition – ‘Be A Good Sport’ in the subject. Our Canine Friends Who doesn’t love pets? We love our pets and we want to tell you why. Each month, we will focus on a different pet that will melt your heart.

A

nimals have that non-judging way about them and love us just as we are. They don’t care about our hair, house, grades, age, weight or shoes. You can read and sing and talk to them about a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g! Pets don’t come free from effort, but they’ll pay you back in so many ways. From hamsters, horses and cats, to dogs, gerbils and goldfish, each month we’ll fill you in with all the need-toknow fun facts about your favorite pet!

DOGS Dogs have found their way into our families, homes and hearts. For the time and effort you spend taking care of a dog, it will pay you back in so many ways. They can build your confidence, strengthen your self-esteem and teach you to be patient, kind and responsible. It’s great to see a dog running off the lead, sniffing his world of smells, and they show such loving devotion. Dogs and puppies are such fun and will love you even on bad hair days!

COST ‘N CARE The price you paid for your pooch is the least of your expenses! Besides an average vet bill of $250 (shots, check-up, minor stuff) per year, you need supplies like a dog dish, leash, brush, collar, plus dog food and flea and tick meds. It’s also a good idea to ID tag your dog (check out pettags.com). Treats, toys, beds and other doggy gear mean you may feel as though there is a hole in your purse! Before approaching your parents for a dog, think about the time you will have to feed, water, walk and play with your new tail-wagging friend. Write down the times of day when you would feed him, change the water dish, go for a walk and play with him. Talk to your parents. Be realistic and honest. Dogs are a huge commitment, but they’ll melt your heart with their funny ways and waggy tails!

THEME Decide ahead of time if you’ll be following a traditional or specific theme. For instance, will the party be. . . • Girl’s night out? • Camping indoors? • Under the sea? • Movie night mania? • Spa day? • Something different? Think of some fun activities that you and your guests be will sure to love – and don’t forget a bunch of snacks too!

INVITATIONS Any great party begins with the invite. After you’ve decided on a theme, create invitations to match. Consider using movie tickets for a movie night, tent cutouts for camping indoors, or postcards with underwater images for under the sea. You get the picture. Match the invitation to your theme. Remember to include the following information on each invitation: 1. The date and the day of the event. July 10 – Friday Night 2. Beginning and ending times – these should be the expected drop-off and pick-up times for guests. 6:00pm-10:00am 3. Menu – will dinner be provided, or just snacks? Pizza will be served!

FUNKY FLIP FLOPS MATERIALS – 1 new pair of flip flops – Ribbon in a variety of colors – Beads, sticky jewels, stickers (optional) STEPS 1. Select your favorite color(s) of ribbon. 2. Tie the ribbon around the base of one of the straps of the flop (by the back of your foot). 3. Wrap the ribbon around the straps. 4. When you reach the end of the strap, tie off in a knot around the strap like you did to start. 5. Lace beads or stick jewels and/or stickers on the ribbons. 6. Wear your brand new funky flip flops!

4. What each guest should bring – if guests need something specific for a craft or activity, list it here. Don’t forget your sleeping bag, pillow, and makeup! 5. Location – list your address, because parents will likely want this information (a map can also be helpful). 123 W. Main Street 6. R.S.V.P. information – list all ways to R.S.V.P., such as phone number (text or call), email address, etc. Also include a specific date that the R.S.V.P. should be given. Please R.S.V.P. by July 1 to 555-1212 Before handing out invites, decide how many guests you’d like – but check with parents first!

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES Treat your guests to some rockin’ sleepover games! Check out this list of sleepover party games: www.bestparty games.co.uk or have a go at these easypeasy DYI instructions for Funky Flip Flops! Here are some other ideas for games or activities to make your sleepover a success: • Photo shoot • Musical manicures • Mini spa • Movies • Karaoke • Decorate pillowcases/picture frames/etc. • Make funky flip flops (see left)

There are tons of great slumber party menu items to choose from. It’s an idea to plan your menu with a balance between junk food and healthier options – that way your BFFs won’t throw up all over Mom’s new carpet! Try this treat, adapted from the Black Bean Brownie Recipe over at Super Healthy Kids (see right). If brownies aren’t your thing, how about… • Pizza • Veggie trays with dip • Fondue – this is great with melted chocolate! • Fruit trays with dip • Rice crispy treats • Chips and dip • Popcorn • Fruit smoothies • Cookies • Fat-free frozen yogurt Decide if you’ll prepare the menu ahead of time or make treats during the party. Either way, have all the necessary items ready before the big day.

Now you’ve decided on a theme, invitations, menu, games and activities, you’re ready to host an awesome sleepover. Let the party begin!

TIRES W

hatever kind of wheels you use to get around, make sure that you know how to keep them running smoothly. These skills are easier to learn that you think, and will keep you on the road instead of being kicked to the curb! Got a car of your own? Maybe you travel as a passenger with your family or friends? However you get around, it’s worth knowing a few things about basic maintenance – you never know when you might need them!

COOL UNDER PRESSURE BY RHONA REID

We’re starting with tire pressure, and the first thing you need to know is that a tire can lack the correct pressure without actually looking flat, so don’t rely on a visual check. It’s worth knowing that if a tire is at the wrong pressure, then it will affect the car’s overall performance and general road safety, so it’s pretty important to get it right! First, find out what the tire pressure should be. This will be in the owner’s manual, or you can easily check online or ask a garage for advice.

Pit Stop-Watch The fastest ever Formula one pit stop was recorded in November 2013, at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Red Bull driver, Mark Webber, was stationary in the pit for only 1.93 seconds, whilst a full four-wheel change took place. Bet the pit stop team was pretty tire-d after smashing that record!

72

Most garages and gas stations have a pressure gauge and air pump outside for you to use. Unscrew the dust cap, fix on the pressure gauge and check the result.

Did You Know?

PUMP IT UP OR LET IT DOWN?

Too little air will give a more sluggish ride and can wear out your tires more quickly.

If your tire needs extra air, then carefully inflate using the air pump. If the pressure gauge says that the tire is overinflated, allow air to escape through the valve until the pressure is correct. Screw the dust cap back on, and move on to the next wheel. Nice work, Auto-Girl!

BICYCLES HAVE PRESSURE TOO, YOU KNOW… It’s not just car tires that need attention – your bike needs a check each month too! Make sure the tires are in good shape, and within the PSI (pressure pounds per square inch) limits - printed on the side wall of your tire. Use a floor pump with a pressure gauge or a portable pump, both easily available from bicycle shops and online.

Rubber Roads?

INFLATION NATION

Highways made out of old tires, broken down and then mixed with asphalt and bitumen, are already in use in China, Brazil, Spain and Germany. Given that tires are one of the largest global sources of waste, reusing them like this is a great idea. What a way to spend their re-tire-ment, eh?

Remove the dust cap and open the valve. Attach the pump to the valve and inflate your tire to within the PSI limits (you need a bit of muscle here!), tighten up the valve again, and replace the dust cap! Easy! If you don’t have access to a car or bike of your own, offer to help check someone else’s tires to acquire your Auto-Girl skills. Maybe a friend or younger sister or brother could use some help? They’d be wheel-y grateful!

AND FINALLY… Where do cars get the most flat tires? Wherever there’s a fork in the road. We’ll get our coat…

R E C IP E S Grab a ‘Pizza’ The Action!

Imagine This!

BY RHONA R

The world’s biggest pizza, cooked up by five Italian chefs in 2012, tipped the scales at over 50,000 pounds – that’s heavier than 4 elephants! And with a height of over 131 feet, you’re looking at 8 giraffes standing on each other’s heads! You want garlic bread with that?!

No really, who doesn’t love pizza? Well, it’s time to amaze your friends and family by making your own! Roll up your sleeves, wash your hands, and let’s get cooking!

YOU’LL NEED… – Olive oil – 1 cup of flour – 2 1/2 tsp of yeast – 1 tsp sugar – 1/2 cup water – 3 ounces of tomato sauce – 1 cup mozzarella cheese, chopped – Small bunch of basil leaves – Side salad

LET’S DO IT! • Heat the oven to 425 degrees. It will be really hot so you may need an adult to assist you here. • Oil a 20 x 24cm baking tray. Mix the flour, yeast, ¼ tsp salt and the sugar in a bowl, then stir in the water. Mix and knead until smooth, adding a little more water or flour if necessary, then press into the oiled tray. • Spread the tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a border round the edge. • Sprinkle the chopped mozzarella over the top and bake for 10 – 15 mins, or until cooked through. • Scatter with torn basil and serve with your favorite salad!

BUILD YOUR SKILLS! Try adding a spoonful of pesto to the sauce for a zingy garlic flavor - or adding chopped herbs to the dough!

TOPPING OUT! Okay, the one thing you shouldn’t do when you’ve made your first homemade pizza is keep it to yourself! So before you get the cutting wheel out, snap those pizza-topping-selfies! We want to see just how creative you guys really are when it comes to what goes on top, so share those pizza shots with us at recipe@prioritygirlmagazine.com.

Cool Kebabs With Chocolate Dip You know when something is so easy, people say, ‘it’s a breeze’? Well this is so quick and simple that ‘a breeze’ is just not…well… breezy enough. It’s even easier! And it involves dipping delicious things into chocolate, so what exactly are you waiting for?!

YOU’LL NEED… Your favorite fruits, peeled, chopped into roughly even sizes, and threaded onto wooden skewers. Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, melon, pear…whatever you love eating. Aim to have more or less the same amount of fruit pieces on each skewer. – 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt – 1/2cup Nutella or similar

LET’S DO IT! • Mix the yogurt and Nutella together in a bowl until blended. • Arrange the fruit skewers on a plate. • Serve! Told you. It’s a breeze!
