S

pring is here, so get out there and enjoy the numerous golf courses that surround you before the heat comes! It is the perfect time, and there are locals’ deals everywhere. The two courses that we highlight this issue—The Legacy Golf Club and Rhodes Ranch Golf Club—are ready and waiting. As writer Bill Bowman so nicely puts it, regarding Legacy in Henderson, “The layout has got the Vegas theme front and center as well as a couple of holes where players’ willingness to gamble will be put them to the test on risk/ reward shots.” And for Rhodes Ranch, “The course is one of those courses that players will find enjoyable and playable…two traits necessary to be a success.” Also in this issue, Eric Dutt (President of the Nevada Golf Course Owners Association and Vice President of Caesars Entertainment, Rio Secco, Cascata and Butch Harmon School of Golf) continues with his guest column. “This article will focus on the topic of junior golf, both in Las Vegas and nationally, some of its history and what needs to be done to improve the quality of the junior golf landscape in Las Vegas. Without new players coming into the game, golf courses don’t have future consumers.” We appreciate his time and are happy to have his column continue! Other interesting golf topics in this issue include the up and coming trend of the Golfboard, available to you at Las Vegas National Golf Club. Learn to surf your way through 18 holes! Also of news, Bali Hai Golf Club and Royal Links will host the Golf Digest Think Young Play Hard Invitational golf tournament April 16 through 19 of 2015. “It’s flashy, over-the-top, action-packed and completely

18

LVG & L

S PR I NG 2015

unique,” says Josh Hill, Vice President of Marketing at Walters Golf. As you can tell from our cover, Jonathan Ogden opened up for Brian Hurlburt, freelance writer for Las Vegas Golf and Leisure Magazine. “When it comes to Ogden, a resident of Henderson, his athletic skills and work ethic are what allowed him to become one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history and a first-ballot hall of famer,” writes Hurlburt. “Off the fairways and greens, Ogden, along with his wife, Kema, is dedicated to helping the community through the efforts of the Jonathan Ogden Foundation. In previous years, Ogden held charity golf tournaments to help raise funds and as this was written, plans were being finalized for a big bowling bash.” Don’t forget to enjoy the tips of Golf Fashionista Seema Sadekar, who ventures off the golf course to share some of her workout tips. For our travel piece, a family trip to San Diego is a must. Within our real estate pages, Eric Trump, Executive Vice President of Development and Acquisitions for Trump Organization, shares his thoughts on the Las Vegas market and Trump International Hotel Las Vegas. Brian Hurlburt visits The View Wine Bar and Kitchen at Tivoli Village. Bob Gourley takes you on a tour of local bakeries. And Nisha Sadekar shares her idea of a perfect 9 and 19 at Bali Hai Golf Club. Thanks for reading!

ome of the world’s greatest golfers play TaylorMade Golf equipment, and each of them is a finely-tuned golfing machine. The likes of Jason Day, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Martin Laird and Natalie Gulbis play perfectly-fitted drivers, irons, wedges and putters, and a lot of the work that dialed in their clubs was done at The Kingdom, the legendary fitting area at TaylorMade Golf headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif. Most golfers will never have the chance to experience The Kingdom, but now visiting and local golfers can experience the next best thing with the new, state-of-the-art TaylorMade Performance Studio that debuts in mid-March at the popular Vegas golf facility located across from Town Square. The next big thing in Vegas golf is here. The TaylorMade Tuned Performance Studio offers golfers the opportunity to participate in a Tour-caliber club fitting experience with some of the top club-fitters in golf. The studio presents a unique setting with top-of-the-line club building equipment that rivals what can only be found on a PGA Tour Truck. Couple that with swing analysis technology, and the years of experience that the fitters have to offer, and your clubs will be completely optimized to your personal swing elements.

Club fitters trained at TaylorMade Golf will be on hand every day to personally assist golfers with new clubs, and most of the time your new clubs can be built to your specs while you wait. Pretty much the only place where golfers can partake in such an experience is if you have access to a tour range during a tournament. Which for 99.9 percent of us, isn’t the case. “The technology and experience of our fitters allow us to show golfers how the golf is performing as well as show them what the club is doing,” says Tom Fisher, Global Manager of Experientials, TaylorMade Golf. “We will show golfers the cause and the effect, and that allows us to fit them perfectly with

new clubs that will improve their games. This makes for a much more in-depth fitting.” The new studio is located on the second tier of the lighted range at the TaylorMade Golf Experience and will offer a VIP setting and the ability to not only be fitted for the best clubs but a place where golfers can come practice or experience the state-of-the-art area for an event or practice session. EVENTS

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN OPEN A Las Vegas tradition since 1983, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is slated to be the most exciting PGA TOUR event this fall—October 19 to 25. New to the team this year is Tournament Director Patrick Lindsey. Get to know him, his background, what he is excited about and his goals through the questions below. Q: Congratulations on your new position! What are you looking forward to most in joining the team at Shriners Hospitals for Children Open? A: Thank you very much, I’m excited to be apart of the community and continuing the long standing history of PGA TOUR golf in Las Vegas. It’s hard to nail down one specific item that I’m most looking forward to. First and foremost, having the ability to raise dollars for children is our #1 priority and having a child of my own with special needs makes this even more fulfilling. Secondly, we can’t wait to get involved and give back to the local community. I think this is an important core value that we should instill within SHO staff, the event and ourselves. The communities give so much to all PGA TOUR events, and the least we can do is give back. Q: Tell us a little about your background and what has prepared you for your current roll as tournament director. A: Ever since my grandfather bought me my first set of golf clubs at age seven, I have been hooked. Although I’m definitely not destined to do great things playing the game of golf, I’m thrilled that the game has shown me an alternative route and has given me a career. I graduated with my MBA in sports administration from St. Thomas University and was fortunate to accept an operations position with the PGA TOUR. I have lived in South Florida ever since and have experienced over 30 events during that time period, including multiple World Golf Championships, FedEx

Cup Playoff events and the 2013 Presidents Cup. All of these tournaments have challenged me immensely and have helped inspire me to become a tournament director. Q: Will you be relocating to Las Vegas? A: YES! We are thrilled to be moving to Las Vegas. We are currently in a contract to purchase a house within the Summerlin community and cannot wait to move in. We are first time homebuyers and after renting for the past 10 years, we are more than ready to have a house to call our own. Having lived on the east coast my whole life, it’s going to be an adjustment, but I’m very excited to live out west. Q: What are your personal goals within your new position? A: Personally it’s 100 percent about challenging myself in a new role/position. Having been in South Florida for the past 10 years, personally and professionally I’m ready for a change and a new challenge. As for ideas and goals for the event, I really feel that we have a great opportunity to make the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open an entertainment destination for residents of Summerlin, Las Vegas and the golf fans that visit Las Vegas throughout the year. www.shrinershospitalsopen.com

GOLF FORE KIDS 2014 MAJOR SUCCESS STORY The first Golf Fore Kids tournament was held in 2005 at Falcon Ridge Golf Course. What started as a simple idea with just a few volunteers has grown into a major charity event for the Mesquite, Nevada community each Christmas. The 10th Annual Golf Fore Kids Tournament held on Dec 11, 2014 was the biggest event so far! Four golf courses—Falcon Ridge, Conestoga, the Canyons at Oasis Golf Club and Palms—donated their facilities for the day allowing 100 percent of the proceeds raised to benefit local area youth during Christmas. A record number of golfers and sponsors stepped forward this year to help the cause. In total, 558 golfers participated and made the event possible by generously bringing toys (minimum $50 value) in lieu of paying a green fee. In addition, 94 holes were sponsored by businesses. “This is one of the very best events our partners get involved with,” says Golf Mesquite Nevada Executive Director Cody Law. “Donation of our courses to this event is a no-brainer. It’s very gratifying to see the golfing community come together each year to help this worthy cause.” Golfers donated enough bikes, balls, trucks, dolls and games to span over 250 feet of the event tent’s stage area. The estimated value of toys and cash donations for 2014 exceeded $47,000. Over the 10 years, this tournament has raised approximately $385,000 of toys, bikes and cash, which has been distributed to under privileged children in the Mesquite area. The Junior Golf Landscape BY ERIC DUTT

H

appy 2015 to Nevada Golfers! Once again my thanks to Las Vegas Golf & Leisure Magazine and Ryan and Heidi Chackel for allowing the Nevada Golf Course Owners Association (NVGCOA) this space to comment on the Nevada golf industry and the golf industry in general. This article will focus on the topic of junior golf, both in Las Vegas and nationally, its history and what needs to be done to improve the quality of the junior golf landscape in Las Vegas. Without new players coming into the game golf courses don’t have future consumers. My family moved to Las Vegas in 1964 and shortly thereafter my brother and I took up the game when our father began to play, and then later another brother and my sister took up the game. At that time there were only two junior golf tournaments in Las Vegas so we made frequent trips to play some 150 junior golf tournaments in Southern California. About 1970, the golf professionals at the old Winterwood Golf Club formed the Winterwood Junior Golf Association, which ultimately became the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association (SNJGA). This organization, focused on the

36

LVG & L

S PR I NG 2015

competitive aspect of junior golf, held numerous tournaments throughout the year and virtually all Las Vegas golf courses supported junior golf by hosting a junior event and junior clinics at their course during the year. The SNJGA developed many very good players who went on to earn college scholarships and some ultimately played professionally. In the early 1990s, the SNJGA merged with the Las Vegas Inner City Youth Golf Association. In the late 1990s, The First Tee concept was born and the SNJGA/Inner City Youth Golf Association became a First Tee Chapter. The emphasis of the First Tee was to expose the game of golf to young people of all backgrounds with less of an emphasis on competition. This became the new model for many of the junior golf associations throughout the country. Many of the resources that at one time had gone into producing better players through a robust tournament schedule now went to exposing the game of golf to a broader cross section of young people. And The First Tee has been successful in reaching young people of all demographics. According to The First Tee’s 2012 Annual Report, there were 187 First Tee chapters across the coun-

try, more than 750 program locations, 800 involved school districts and 5300 involved elementary schools, all of which exposed golf to 455,000 young people with a total of more than 3.1 million young people being impacted by The First Tee. Since 1997, and as of 2012, the First Tee has produced more than 13,000 high school golfers and more than 1,600 college golfers. But, of all the young people exposed to the game, how many are still playing the game today? I manage golf courses and need NEW consumers entering and STAYING in the game. And, since 1997 The First Tee has produced 1,600 college golfers, from a total outreach of 7.6 million young people (according to the 2012 First Tee Annual report). Not a very good ratio of college players to young people exposed to the game, over a 15-year period, in my opinion. The overall lack of emphasis from the First Tee’s standpoint on competition is one of the contributing factors, though certainly not the only one as to why the number of very good junior players coming out of Las Vegas is not at the number it should be when you factor in the overall population and the number of golf courses in Southern Nevada. So, what’s the answer to attracting young people to the game, creating good junior players who have a shot of getting a college scholarship and keeping these young players playing golf after they reach their adult years or finish college? Access to Courses: Part of the solution is getting back to the way it was years ago where golf courses made their facilities available to young people who wanted to learn the game, and at times at NO CHARGE. Most courses are NOT busy after 2 p.m. so why not let juniors come out and play and practice? I’ve recently opened Rio Secco up to both the Del Webb and Miller middle schools and their golf programs, and it’s fun to see all the juniors at the course on certain afternoons. Certain other Las Vegas golf courses are very generous in allowing junior golfers the ability to play and practice free or at a greatly reduced rate. Exposure to the Game: This is where I feel the First Tee of Southern Nevada needs to refocus their energy. Get in front of kids 8 to 12 years of age, from all walks of life, and get a L A SV EG A SG O L FA N D L E I S U R E .C OM

golf club in these young people’s hands. Work with the YMCA, Boys N Girls Club, etc., to put golf programs in place. Expose young people to the game, then pass them along to the golf courses for additional and more refined instruction, getting them ready for competition. Competition: This creates good-to-verygood players who are focused on college golf programs and beyond. The more competitive events a junior can play, the better player they will become, as they learn how to play under pressure and when they have to hit their best shot when it counts. So, what’s being done to address the three above areas? A group of Las Vegas golf organizations has joined forces to restructure the junior golf effort in Las Vegas. Look at www.southernnevadajuniorgolf.com to learn more about the efforts and opportunities for junior golfers and young people who want to learn the game. Certain golf courses in Las Vegas are making their own concerted efforts to jumpstart junior golf/player development programs. The PGA of America has started a program called Junior League where teams of 10 to 12 junior golfers compete in a team concept that has been very successful in its first two years. Las Vegas had some ten teams in 2014 with PGA Professional Nolan Halterman from Anthem Country Club coordinating Las Vegas programming. Andy Schaper, Head Professional at Boulder Creek Golf Club (Boulder City) has taken the program to a new level as he conducts a year round junior league program at his course. Rio Secco offers any junior access to practice facilities and the course after 2 p.m. at no charge and many other Las Vegas courses have certain privileges for juniors. The Southern Nevada Golf Association (SNGA), historically focused on amateur golf in Southern Nevada, has added a junior division to their tournament schedule, allowing accomplished junior golfers the ability to compete on a more regular basis against the best amateur players in Southern Nevada. The First Tee of Southern Nevada is reorganizing and the new focus will be solely on exposing young people to the game of golf with very little to no emphasis on conducting competitive tournaments. The Las Vegas PGA Chapter will once again conduct the PGA Junior League Program in 2015 with hopes of expanding the number of teams over 2014 levels. Certain Las Vegas middle schools have golf programs, which include a schedule of matches and tournaments between the schools. Participating schools include: Faith LAS V EGAS GOLFANDLEISURE.CO M

Lutheran, Bob Miller, St. Elizabeth Seaton, Las Vegas Day School, Our Lady of Las Vegas, The Meadows, Calvary Chapel, Del Webb, Henderson International, Becker Middle School, St. Francis, St. Viator and Lake Mead Christian Academy. These efforts should improve the junior golf landscape in Las Vegas but we need all golf courses to get involved and parents of those young people who get interested in the game must make the commitment as well in

getting their children to the course, to tournaments and keep their children playing. It will pay off for everyone in the long run.&

The Golfboard is the brainchild of selfdescribed snowboard addict Don Wildman, founder of Bally Total Fitness, who had the original idea to use an electric skateboard to ride the steep slopes of his local Malibu course as a fun way to ‘get in some turns’ during the summer months. His passion turned into a business and, early on, the concept

was also embraced by surfing superstar Laird Hamilton. What they have come up with is a new, fun and innovative way to play golf that adds excitement and can shave a lot of time off of a round of golf. This writer, on a recent afternoon and with no golfers in front of our group, played 9 holes in 53 minutes at a pace that wasn’t rushed in the least. Even on the longest of the four (the 571-yard 9th), players can lay up and have a wedge into the elevated green. And then there’s the players’ favorite… a drivable par 4. This one, the 11th, plays just 321 from the tips. It’s your classic risk/ reward hole. If you go for it, be prepared to face a plethora of obstacles. “It’s definitely well guarded,” Smith says. “You have to fly the water and then there are bunkers left and trees to the right.” Feeling lucky? Well, we are in Vegas so you LAS V EGAS GOLFANDLEISURE.CO M

might want to give it your best shot on this hole. Overall, Rhodes Ranch is one of those courses that players will find enjoyable and playable…two traits necessary to be a success. Another great trait is conditioning and Smith adds that the conditions on the course are superb. “Over the past couple of years people have been very happy with the conditions… and so are we,” he says. “I think we have some of the best conditions in town.” Add in a restaurant with a wide variety of dining options and the fact that the course is just five minutes from The Strip and you’ve got one of those courses that appeals to those teeing it up and even to those just looking for a wide assortment of dining options. Players will find stunning mountain views

from the clubhouse and the deck. And then there’s the menu. Picking a favorite is tough, but Smith has a few suggestions. “A couple of our signature items that people talk about a lot are our Monte Cristo sandwich and our VIP burger,” Smith says. So whether you’re a visitor or a resident, Rhodes Ranch Golf Club has tremendous layout appeal, convenience and variety… many of the things most golfers search for when they are looking for a place to tee it up, especially in Las Vegas.&

The Legacy Golf Club An 18-hole tribute to Las Vegas

T

STORY BY BILL BOWMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE LEGACY GOLF CLUB

his is Las Vegas…home of great golf courses and great gaming. The Legacy Golf Club in Henderson mixes those endeavors to perfection. The layout has got the Vegas theme front and center as well as a couple of holes where players’ willingness to gamble will put them to the test on risk/reward shots. The Legacy, an Arthur Hills design, stretches out to an impressive 7,233 yards from the tips. “The Legacy has rich tradition in Las Vegas,” says Andy Deiro, general manager. “It’s an extremely challenging and fair course and the conditions are just outstanding.” Now, with around 50 golf course choices in the Vegas area, players might want to know what is so special about The Legacy. Well, the answers are plentiful. But we’ll start with the par-3 10th hole. This 193-yard 46

LVG & L

beauty is the course’s signature design and represents Vegas perfectly. The tee boxes are shaped like the four suits in a deck of cards: club, diamond, heart and spade. There’s no better tribute to Las Vegas anywhere. There’s plenty more to be excited about. Like the Devil’s Triangle. This three-hole stretch features golf holes that will test a player’s power (the par-4 11th stretches out to 444 yards from the tips), shot-shaping ability (the par-4 12th is 384 yards from the tips but features a severe dog-leg left off the tee) and aggressiveness (the par-4 12th is just 324 yards from the tips so it’s driveable). Get through these three holes at par or better and you’ve got something to brag about. And speaking of the 13th, it’s a gambling hole right from the start. Do you play it smart and lay up or try to drive the green? Accord-

ing to Deiro, the answer is easy. “Logically, players can just hit a long iron or rescue club into the fairway and have a sand wedge in,” he says. “But you’d be surprised how often I see people reach for the driver headcover. The driver is just not a shot many people can pull off very often.” One of the best risk/reward gambles in Las Vegas is here. The par-5 17th plays just 515 yards from the tips and this one is definitely reachable in two. But, there is danger…and plenty of it. The drive is a gripit-and-rip it shot to a wide fairway. Bunkers on either side do creep into the landing area so accuracy is a must. Then comes the dilemma. Do you go for it in two or lay up? Well, your answer, again, will show what type of gambler you are. Laying up will leave just a wedge into a narrow, L A SV EG A SG O L FA N D L E I S U R E .C OM

but deep green. But, many will go for the gusto and take their best shot at getting home in two. A couple of things to remember: the fairway narrows down to about 20 yards wide near the green so rolling up a shot is tough…especially since the fairway slopes toward the huge pond on your left. A couple of bunkers, one short-right of the green and another on the right, add to the challenge. Throw in a couple of diabolical mounds and you’ve got the makings of a dynamic golf hole. “This is certainly a birdie hole that can turn into a bogey or double bogey hole if it’s not well thought out,” Deiro says. “The part

most players don’t realize is that if they lay up their shot, they need to lay it up short of the water…not short of the green. If you try to lay up short of the green, your ball can easily take a hop to the left and find the water.” So whether it’s the Vegas theme you’re looking for in your next golf outing, risk/reward golf holes, rolling fairways, huge greens, water features or all of those factors, The Legacy will certainly fit the bill. And that’s not a gamble…it’s a sure bet.&

San Diego The perfect family escape

an Diego has it all—pristine beaches, five-star hotels, amazing restaurants and much more. It is the perfect vacation, especially for families, and only a five to six hour drive from Las Vegas. Recently my family of five spent four nights as tourists, and we can’t wait to go back. Our extended weekend was split, with two nights in La Jolla and two nights in Mission Bay. The weather in the middle of February

was fantastic, as I hear it is year-round. We spent our time at tourist attractions, enjoying the beach, playing Frisbee at the park and enjoying some fabulous meals. Our first two nights were enjoyed at the Grand Colonial Hotel in La Jolla, in the heart of the downtown district. Everything was within walking distance—beaches, sea lions, parks, restaurants, and shopping. The Grand Colonial is one of La Jolla’s oldest original hotels, opening in 1913 as The Colonial Apartments and Hotel.

Having undergone many renovations over the years, most recently in 2007 investing $8 million, the hotel now features 75 guest rooms as well as two adjacent historic landmarks—The Little Hotel by the Sea (from 1924) and the Garden Terraces (from 1926)—adding 18 additional suites to the inventory. Our Garden Terrace suite boasted magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and California coastline. NINE-TEN, the hotel’s restaurant, offers a sophisticated and casual menu created by award-winning Chef Jason Knibb and Pastry Chef Rachel King. With three seating options, you can enjoy the stunning outdoor terrace with peeks of the ocean, sidewalk café tables along downtown La Jolla’s historic Prospect Street or an intimate dining room. All along Prospect Street are dining choices, bars, shopping and even a few options to dance the night away. Our first full day was filled with family friendly activities. First stop—Birch Aquarium—was a quick five-minute drive up the coast from the hotel’s front door. We enjoyed the aquarium in the morning, which seemed to work out well as the crowds were thin. Located on a picturesque bluff, the aquarium features more than 60 tanks of colorful marine life. Our four-year old daughter loved everything about the aquarium and I now have over 100 pictures on my phone of coral reefs, fish, seahorses, jellyfish, a sea turtle and sharks. from our teenage boys about being bored—a major plus in my book. After a quick bite to eat, we headed back to the Grand Colonial where we traded our walking shoes for flip flops, Frisbee, beach towels and sand castle building supplies. A few hundred yards from the hotel is a small, easily accessible beach. While it wasn’t big enough for the Frisbee, it was great for wave running, sand castle building and soaking up the sun. an expansive park perfect for the Frisbee. Our evening included a family dinner at a local pizza joint and a few cocktails for my husband and me on the hotel’s outdoor terrace after the kids had called it a night. From La Jolla and the Grand Colonial Hotel, we ventured south to Mission Bay and our new hotel, the Catamaran Resort. Mission Bay is characterized by sparkling beaches, miles of boardwalks and bicycle paths and a plethora of recreational activities. After checking in, we ventured down the road

about five minutes by taxi (to avoid parking) to Belmont Park amusement park. Here at San Diego’s only beachfront amusement park, we enjoyed rides and a round of miniature golf. One of our sons actually succeeded at those impossible pay-to-play games and won a large SpongeBob Square Pants for his thrilled sister. The park is a good size for the area, but not overwhelming. A couple of hours was perfect to thoroughly enjoy it. The Catamaran Resort is nestled on the tranquil waters of Mission Bay and just L A SV EG A SG O L FA N D L E I S U R E .C OM

The Difference Maker NFL Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden makes aces and a positive difference in his post-football life

D

STORY BY BRIAN HURLBURT, FOLLOW @LVGOLFINSIDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY EXCEED PHOTOGRAPHY AND PLAY GOLF DESIGNS INC.

on’t think for a minute that the six-foot, nine-inch mountain of a man and NFL Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden isn’t an athlete. Sometimes the perception of men built like J.O. is that they were merely fortunate to be born with the correct genes. For sure, size and stature matter, but there’s much more that goes into becoming a living legend. When it comes to Ogden, a resident of Henderson, his athletic skills and work ethic are what allowed him to become one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history and a first-ballot hall of famer. A little known fact is that Ogden was a twosport athlete at UCLA. Ogden played foot-

LAS V EGAS GOLFANDLEISURE.CO M

ball and threw the shot put for the Bruins, earning major accolades for his prowess in both endeavors. He won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top offensive lineman and was a consensus All-American during his UCLA football career. Off the football field, Ogden heaved the shot put for the track and field team and won the 1996 NCAA indoor title in his “second” sport. He was elected to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. In 1996, he was selected by the Baltimore Ravens as the fourth-overall player in the NFL draft. He went on to earn all-pro honors in 11 of his 12 seasons in the NFL and was recognized as one of the best in the

history of the sport. His professional career was highlighted by a Super Bowl title in 2001 and capped off with his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2013. These days Ogden stalks golf courses like he used to roam football fields. His solid game proves, yet again, his athletic skill. The big guy plays to a more-than-respectable handicap of seven and has a career-best round of 72. He also has recorded two aces, both at Anthem Country Club, his home course. Of playing golf at six-foot, nineinches tall, Ogden, a gentle giant, says simply, “The club has a lot further to travel.” He believes that to be both a positive (more potential distance) and a negative (less control).

Off the fairways and greens, Ogden, along with his wife, Kema, is dedicated to helping the community through the efforts of the Jonathan Ogden Foundation. In previous years, Ogden held charity golf tournaments to help raise funds and as this was written, plans were being finalized for a big bowling bash. The inaugural Jonathan Ogden Celebrity Bowl fundraiser hits the lanes of the hip and cool Brooklyn Bowl at the LINQ on April 19. The event is open to all bowlers and offers a chance to roll strikes and turkeys with Ogden and a bunch of his NFL, actor and athlete friends. The event is $1500 per group 76

to bowl and includes a VIP experience with proceeds benefitting the Jonathan Ogden Foundation. Visit www.OgdenCelebrityBowl.com for more details or to register. “Growing up in Washington, D.C., I saw a lot of people in need,” says Ogden, who also plays in several other charity golf tournaments throughout the year to support worthwhile causes. “When I was in a position to make a difference, I started a foundation to help inner-city kids in the Baltimore area and then in Las Vegas with the help of my wife, Kema. It was also important to us to teach our children the importance of giving back and helping others.”

As for golf, Ogden was drawn to the game the same way a lot of others have been. He watched in awe as Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by 12 shots and was quickly intrigued with the sport. Some three decades later, he’s never looked back and golf is in his blood forever. “Tiger’s win attracted me to the game and I really started to become interested in golf after that,” remembers Ogden. “I started playing with my lawyer and other friends and loved it. Golf is a passion of mine. Trying to ‘beat’ golf is a challenge and even though it’s an impossible thing to do, I really enjoy trying.” L A SV EG A SG O L FA N D L E I S U R E .C OM

Jonathan Ogden hosts a celebrity bowling event open to the public to help kids at Brooklyn Bowl, April 19. For more information visit www. Ogden Celebrity Bowl.com

But while golf is his passion, helping others is in his soul. There have been memorable and meaningful moments through the last two decades of service, but several stand out to Jonathan and Kema. “This Christmas, with the help of CAAMP Kids Care Club, we adopted seven families in the Vegas community and supplied them with items such as toys, clothes, shoes, food, furniture and family outings,” says Kema. “Although we have been a part of making a difference in many childrens’ and young adults’ lives throughout the years with our programs, this was a great moment and we were honored to be a part of it.” LAS V EGAS GOLFANDLEISURE.CO M

Ogden and his wife, Kema

The Ogdens and the Foundation have also adopted several underserved title 1 schools. They work with Robert Taylor Elementary and West Preparatory Academy. A school literacy program provides each child books and they spend time reading together and incorporating activities that focus on improving comprehension. Health and wellness is also taught to the kids and healthy snacks are provided. Their philosophy is, “healthy bodies and healthy minds.” The Ogdens also operate a UFC gym in Anthem and they offer weekly workshops for at-risk kids that focus on things such as self-esteem, anti-bullying, anger manage-

ment, and basic life skills. They work with several organizations such as Hope Link, Family Promise, Safe Nest and Your Choice Behavioral that have brought kids into the programming. “Helping children and families understand that you not only need to be healthy physically, but also mentally, is very important and one of our main goals,” says Ogden. It makes sense that a guy who spent a lifetime protecting quarterbacks and opening holes for running backs would now be dedicated to keeping an eye out for others. And if some of that positive karma helps his next golf shot, so much the better.& SPRIN G 2 01 5

Exercise Elegance Workout wear for three fitness fads

STORY BY GOLF FASHIONISTA SEEMA SADEKAR PHOTOGRAPHY BY EXCEED PHOTOGRAPHY AND PLAY GOLF DESIGNS INC.

LET’S ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES FASHION TIP

There are two things you need to be a fashionable and fabulous boxer—pink hand wraps and pink boxing gloves. Sure, our focus is to ensure we get in a great workout, but you also want to look the part! My outfit is a charcoal grey Mirelle Activewear jumpsuit. Jumpsuits are very comfortable and offer an easy fashion transition to and from the boxing ring. Compression jumpsuits are form

fitting and allow your body to move freely throughout your workout.

FITNESS TIP

Boxing is a lot of fun. It gives you a ton of energy and a tremendous workout, leaving you feeling like you have conquered the world. The first thing you learn in boxing is the jab. The jab is a punch that requires you to get in an athletic and powerful stance, followed by throwing your leading fist straight into a punching bag, or your spotter, as it is called. If you are a beginner, practicing your jab on the heavy bag will be the best and most effective drill to perfect

your fundamentals while getting in a good workout. You can also enjoy great cardio with your jabs by moving around the bag, jabbing it from different angles and positions. Another fun way to effectively practice your jabs is with your spotter and/or instructor. I work very closely on my boxing with Kema Ogden, the owner of UFC Gym at Anthem. Together we practice speed work and cardio in the ring. The focus is to always make sure my footwork and stance remain powerful and my arm speed increases. Make sure you are always having fun while breaking a great sweat during this perfect workout.

“UFC Gym creates something for all ages and fitness levels. As the first to combine mixed martial arts and fitness, UFC Gym’s different techniques have created an atmosphere where members see immediate results.” ~ Kema Ogden 78

BALANCE LIKE A BALLERINA FASHION TIP

For playing the role of a ballerina, it’s appropriate to go the tutu route. However, I have chosen to go the jumpsuit route. Barre classes are extremely graceful and feminine so it’s fun to get dressed up and look the part. I am wearing a light grey Mirelle Activewear compression jumpsuit with pink open accents on the back of the outfit. It is the most fashionable Barre outfit that keeps me feeling comfortable and allows my body to move, breath and be flexible throughout my workout. For accessories, I tied my hair in a tight, high ballerina bun, added some gloss and carried cold water to give myself the perfect ballerina look.

FITNESS TIP

Barre is the all-around relaxing workout that every women will enjoy, ensuring they stay strong, lean and healthy. It is an inspired form of exercise that includes yoga, Pilates and ballet. This workout will give your body lean muscle mass while focusing on your range of motions, flexibility and balance—all while challenging you mentally and physically in those areas. Understanding some fundamentals while doing Barre is important. STANDING Barre really puts emphasis on your stance. When you stand you should always feel like your spine is in a perfectly straight line. The exercises you do to help your back stay flat will use your abdominal muscles and strengthen your core throughout. LEGS AND TOES Your legs and toes are two essential features you need to perfect to give you the look of a beautiful ballerina. Whenever you lift a leg off the floor, keep knees straight and have toes pointed. This will give you clean lines and also strengthen calf and glute muscles. My favorite Barre position is the “Arabesque Sweep”—stand with your body facing the barre, center your weight and extend your “open” leg straight behind you, leaning forward onto the barre. It’s always great to look at yourself in the mirror to make sure your body is nicely aligned. Once perfectly lined and centered, pulse your extended leg behind you 15 to 20 times, feeling a good stretch, and hold the position. Pulse your lifted leg behind you in the upward motion while still feeling a good stretch followed by a burn throughout your lower body. LAS V EGAS GOLFANDLEISURE.CO M

YOGA ROSES AND POSES FASHION TIP

Choosing the right outfit that is stretchy and light in material is important for yoga. Making sure you feel comfortable both mentally and physically during your poses plays a big role in helping you get the most from your exercises. My Lija Style rose color twopiece is the perfect yoga fashion statement.

FITNESS TIP

Yoga is one of the greatest workouts for meditation and calming your mind. Yoga has various poses and postures with specific physical roles that create balance

to develop both flexibility and strength. In addition to practicing the poses, yoga has instructions on how to breathe and calm your body and mind throughout the process. I love to practice yoga with my instructor and owner of Barre3, Jackie Edlund. We work a lot on making sure that our postures and breathing are always coordinated. It’s important to note that when we inhale during movements, we expand our chest and abdominal muscles, and exhale during movements that narrow the chest and abdominal muscles. Understanding how we breathe is so important. Here are two basic breathing tips to help you during yoga and in daily activities. Find a comfortable place in your home or outside with fresh air

where you can sit on your yoga mat. Make sure to be in a relaxed position before starting any yoga breathing techniques. You also want to make sure the environment that you choose is quiet with no distractions. Begin by sitting in an upright position with your spine straight and legs crossed to begin your breathing exercises and meditation. Begin your breathing. As you inhale you should notice a rise, and with your exhalation a fall, in your abdominals. Take deep and lengthy breaths, and extend your abdominal movement more than you normally would. Keep your chest still during your breathing process and do this ten times focusing on nothing but breathing. This is a great mental exercise to focus and control your mind and breathing.&

“We believe in working smarter not harder. Each Barre3 class is a 60-minute group fitness class. In every class we ask clients to honor their body and their truth. When we listen to our bodies in class it starts a chain effect and you start to tap into listening to your body during the next 23 hours of your day. Many clients notice they sleep better, make healthier eating choices and have increased energy.” ~ Jackie Edlund, owner of Barre3 80

Trump Standards Luxury Condominiums at Trump Tower Las Vegas

Turnberry is one of a handful of Trump Golf properties that also boast a world-class luxury hotel and elegantly showcases how Trump truly handles it all. “We are very well integrated and the combination is working,” says Eric Trump. “I really feel we do it all exceptionally well. We buy the property, we build it, we manage it, we do golf, we do hotels, we do retail, we renovate.” And that is exactly what they have done in Las Vegas.

“We wanted to build the highest end buildings in the market, and we definitely did that in Las Vegas,” says Eric Trump. “When we opened up, we sold for the highest prices in Las Vegas and we were 100 percent sold out. Then in 2009 came the drop in prices and it hit everyone. We sat back for a couple of years weathering the storm, and currently we are still selling for the highest prices in Las Vegas. The View Wine Bar and Kitchen

An A+ atmosphere and views will wow you even before your first taste at this Tivoli Village mainstay.

STORY BY BRIAN HURLBURT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE VIEW WINE BAR AND KITCHEN

ometimes the life of a writer in Las Vegas is beyond difficult. Taking a call from a frantic editor with an assignment to go eat, drink and be merry at a popular wine bar—then write a story about it—can throw even the most professional writers over the edge. Oh, the humanity … Such was the case recently when this writer was asked to take pen to pad—or fingers to keyboard—and create an article about The View Wine Bar and Kitchen that is tucked into the Market LV section of the upscale and opulent Tivoli Village, one of the top shopping and dining destinations in Las Vegas. Tivoli Village is located near Summerlin and oozes sophistication and extravagance. The View Wine Bar and Kitchen (TVWBK) is located on the second floor of the Market LV, a large enclosed area inspired by “modern industrial” shopping atmospheres found in San Francisco and New York. The “retail destination” within a retail destination features unique boutiques, specialty foods, the wine bar and restaurant, a gourmet market and more, all under one roof. The views of Tivoli Village from TVWBK make a visit worth it even before a taste of wine, cheese or other food and beverage. A motif best described as warehouse chic is both welcoming and stylish. A smooth, soothing and relaxing vibe—enhanced by relaxed lighting and custom, handmade decorations and furniture (created by Las Vegas artisans)—puts patrons in the proper mood for a night out. But you can’t really go wrong with Nino’s meatballs, Mary’s fried chicken or a wide selection of artisan cheeses (available three or five at a time for sampling). The menu offers small plates and larger menu items to satisfy both happy hour hopefuls and those looking for a lunch or dinner experience. A sufficient wine list that is updated and changed throughout the year offers a nice blend of selections. A large, main bar area is welcoming to patrons while a smaller bar in The View Cheese Shop offers a more cozy feel. Cocktails and beers are also available and offer a nice accent to Happy Afternoons and other times of day. TVWBK offers live music

Thursday through Saturday and is definitely a spot that should be visited during your next visit to Tivoli Village. In this day and age, customers can easily provide input that can be found online. The View Wine Bar and Kitchen has earned a solid four out of five stars on Yelp, with most reviewers giving A+ ratings to the views and ambiance. The atmosphere is so splendid that it overpowers the food and drink of The View Wine Bar and Kitchen. Kind of like a headliner upstaging an extremely talented, up-and-coming opening act. But we’re not sure that’s a bad thing. Maybe you’ll have to contemplate that over your personal glass of Pinot Noir or Cabernet when you visit The View Wine Bar and Kitchen.&

Fresh Baked

The best Vegas spots for treats from the oven STORY BY BOB GOURLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CARLO’S BAKERY

No matter what time of the day, a delicious baked good is a welcome treat. The Valley has some legendary bakeries that are popular with just about everyone. Here are some of the best.

Carlo’s Bakery A new contender to the scene is at the Venetian Hotel. Carlo’s Bakery is owned by the TLC Television Network’s “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro. He is a fourth-generation pastry chef who was born into the business and taught by his parents. The new Vegas location is a 55,000 square foot facility where visitors can watch specialties being made before their eyes. You will find a massive amount of cookies that represent so many flavors it would take a book to describe them. Éclairs are filled with a silky filling that mixes seamlessly with premium chocolate spread on top. This is also a great spot to indulge in a cream puff with a fresh and airy outside pastry plus creamy filling. It melts in your mouth. Their specialties can also be sent anywhere in the world.

Carlo’s Bakery

Chef Flemming Pedersen has been slaving over hot ovens for 40 years. As a Certified Executive Pastry Chef, his creations have become regular events for residents of Henderson and enlightened visitors. His smiling face is a constant at the homey establishment. Everything is baked from scratch with the freshest ingredients. Traditional European favorites fill the display counters. A mustorder is a cinnamon roll. These are lighter than most as a croissant-type dough is used. On top is a frosting that is so good you will be licking the fork for more. Cakes are another specialty with a wide variety for any occasion. Chef Flemming also is heavily involved in the community. Visit the first Saturday of the month for Scandinavian favorites.

Freed’s Bakery Carlo’s Bakery

Carlo’s Bakery

Carlo’s Bakery

Signature cupcakes have become so popular that the competition to develop new and unique flavors is never ending. One of the top contenders is Freed’s Bakery. Currently run by Max Jacobson-Fried, the third generation family member to run the business, who presents a noteworthy list of cupcake flavors. Not only will you find chocolate peanut butter morsels, but pineapple coconut, cookies and cream and the universally popular red velvet are also highlights. This is also one of the only bakeries in the valley where you can enjoy a traditional bran muffin. The flavorful creations are infused with honey and just the right number of raisins. The slight crunch at first bite ensures a fine experience. Freed’s has earned national exposure on the Food Network, $40 a Day with Rachel Ray and Bon Appetit Magazine.

German Bread Bakery

Carlo’s Bakery

Building a perfect raisin roll can be daunting but not at German Bread Bakery. Not only is it huge, it also includes a memorable combination of dough, raisins and almond past. Owners Jean and Ramona feature a large variety of breads. Their sourdough loaves are made with natural leavening agents for a pure flavor. They prepare not only traditional selections but are always experimenting with new versions as well. When it comes to cakes you can do no wrong by choosing the Black Forest offering. During holiday time the list of seasonal cookies, gingerbread and pumpkin seed bread are just a few of the items that continue to be popular. They also import a large number of German food products like knackwurst and frankfurters. Spirited community outreach is another constant.

Bali Hai Golf Club STORY BY NISHA SADEKAR

PLAY 9

Bali Hai Golf Club Let the golf season begin at the beautiful Bali Hai Golf Club. The Par 71 Bali Hai has some of the most breathtaking views of the Las Vegas Strip and some of the most challenging and scenic golf holes. The 16th hole par 3 is one hole in particular that stands out and challenges your shorter irons. It boasts an island green surrounded by water, bunkers and your very own audience, complements of the Cili Restaurant patio, where many people enjoy their 19th hole.

19th HOLE Cili Restaurant

While we are still sticking to our New Year’s resolution with diet and fitness, Cili has us in mind with their low calorie and sugar free cocktail menu. Located at Bali Hai, the Balinese themed restaurant has a grand selection of American cuisine with a twist of Asian influence leaving us wanting to come back for more. My personal favorite dishes are the delicious Thai chicken salad and their amazingly tasty Chicken Diablo.

“Bali Hai is a nationally ranked golf course that takes you from the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas Strip to the tranquility and beauty of the South Pacific tropical paradise. With first class customer service and our exotically themed gourmet restaurant called Cili, you just can’t go wrong. With all the places I played throughout college and the tour, Bali Hai definitely tops my list.” ~ Jody Niemann, sales manager at Bali Hai 100
