Because Your Business Matters

The Coopersmith Law Firm represents individuals and businesses at all stages of litigation, and advises clients on methods to avoid and minimize the risk of litigation. The Firm’s primary focus is business and corporate litigation, including corporate and partnership disputes, executive-level employment, financial fraud, bet-the-company litigation, and fine art law disputes. The Firm also handles select matters of public significance, including planning and development disputes. Representing both plaintiffs and defendants, the Firm provides clear-thinking and intelligent advice to a wide range of clients, and offers the quality of much larger firms at a much lower cost. The Firm is rated “AV-Preeminent” by the Martindale Hubbell International Law Directory and “Superb” by the Avvo.com lawyer directory. In addition, Mr. Coopersmith was selected in 2012, 2013, and 2014 as a “Top Attorney” in the area of Corporate Litigation by the San Diego Daily Transcript. Mr. Coopersmith has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” each year since 2014 in the area of Business Litigation.

PRACTICE AREA SPOTLIGHT CORPORATE AND PARTNERSHIP DISPUTES We handle disputes amongst and between business partners, whether the business is formed as a partnership, a limited liability company, or a corporation. This often involves an internal dispute regarding compensation or a difference of opinion in the direction of the business. Sometimes this involves a dispute between a company or partnership and a competing enterprise, for example regarding trade secret misappropriation. Parties in internal disputes may determine it is best to dissolve, or separate their business interests. Again, there are various ways to accomplish this, and we work with the client to find the best solution to work towards a positive result. Often even heated disputes can be resolved with a guiding hand and a smart, thoughtful analysis of the problem and immediate action to work towards that resolution. These disputes can also turn to litigation, which requires a firm hand and a strategic approach – not the scatter-shot method that many litigators employ. Where litigation is necessary and appropriate, we are trial-tested. We are equally comfortable in federal court, state court, and private arbitration. We are tough, smart, strategic, and costeffective.

FRONT & CENTER

Climb to the Crux Hit the Rock at These San Diego Spots By Hannah Pierangelo

MESA RIM For those new to climbing, Mesa Rim is a perfect place to start. Featuring San Diego’s largest and tallest indoor rock wall at 30,000 square feet, Mesa Rim provides plenty of options to enhance your climbing skills. At any given time, there are around 250-275 different routes on the wall, allowing for a unique challenge to experienced climbers and beginners alike. Mesa Rim also has several courses available for those new to the sport, including belaying, climbing technique and lead climbing. For more advanced climbers, the gym offers courses that prepare you for more rigorous outdoor climbs as well. While Mesa Rim offers membership, it also has day passes available for $20, plus $6 for gear rental, if needed. Newbies score a real deal with a $30 package that includes the day pass, gear rental and their first belay lesson. Mesa Rim has two locations in Mission Valley and Mira Mesa. GROTTO Grotto’s rock wall features 7,000 square feet of colorfully-painted climbing surface. The gym opened two years ago and caters to the younger, athletic crowd. In addition

22 F I N E S D.CO M

to the artful rock wall, Grotto has a yoga studio, fitness area with free weights and lounge with free wifi. It’s open late all week (‘til midnight!) and offers intro classes for rock climbing and bouldering, which is climbing on a surface low to the ground without ropes (and requires a lot of strength and precision). Day passes are $18. VERTICAL HOLD Another great place to get your indoor climb on is Vertical Hold, formerly called Solid Rock. Vertical Hold features four different areas of activity: top ropes, lead climbing, bouldering and fitness training. While top ropes are more suitable for beginner climbers, advanced climbers can take advantage of the higher difficulty lead climbs and bouldering. Bonus: the route setters at Vertical Hold change climbing paths each week, so you’ll get a new and unique challenge nearly every time you climb. The gym is located conveniently in downtown San Diego for those looking to grab a climb after work. Day passes are $17. HANGTIME If you’ve exhausted the gym scene and you’re ready to try real-life rock climbing, visit Hangtime. This outdoor climbing outfit prides itself on education and safety, and it provides several courses for climbers new to the outdoors to achieve just that. There’s Rock 101, or the basics, but also a class specifically on anchors and rappelling, as well as a self-rescue course, which teaches necessary knowledge for climbing without an instructor. At Hangtime, it’s always time to hang, and they offer full-day climbs at both Mission Trails and Dixon Lake in Escondido for $150.

et’s face it, the regular gym routine can get old. It’s easy to fall into a workout rut – where’s the excitement, the adventure? Where’s the fresh air and scenery? If you’re looking for a thrilling full-body workout that lets you explore nature, you’re not alone. Rock climbing might be the adventure sport/strength training you need to spice up your fitness. Luckily, there are plenty of options for rock-climbing in San Diego for both beginners and vets.

Crafting Contemporary Century-Old Design Continues to Define California’s Coastal Architecture BY HANNAH PIERANGELO

Just as fashion is cyclical, architecture trends today seem to draw upon the success of eras gone by. The modernist movement during the mid-1900s embodied the same appealing elements that contemporary styles adopt today, like clean lines, open space, and natural light. Combined with the ocean views of coastal California, this became the perfect place for budding modernism to thrive.Sean Caddell, local expert in modern and contemporary architecture and agent with Willis Allen Real Estate, describes two beautiful examples in Solana Beach and Cardiff-by-the-Sea.

At first glance, the stark contrast and distinctly contemporary style of this Solana Beach home – whose enormous floor-to-ceiling windows are flooded with warm natural light and exquisite views of both the ocean and the San Dieguito Lagoon – makes it appear like there may not be much history behind this place. Modern aesthetic, is just that: modern. Right? Hardly. Looking closer, it’s easy to see the geometric influence, clean lines and simple industrial elements that inspired a school of thought that’s nearly a century old – the bauhaus. Bauhaus was a school of thought that originated in Germany in 1919 and innovated the use of industrial materials, geometric elements and color in simple, clean architectural and interior designs. Here in California, it’s evolved into the definitive coastal contemporary style and proven itself to be timelessly 24

F I N E S D.CO M | FAC E B O O K .C O M / F I N E M AGA Z I N E S

elegant almost a hundred years later. “A common misconception about contemporary design is that the spaces are cold,” Caddell says. “They’re not. The simplicity of the style lends itself to personal expression and displays of art.” The neutral walls of this home, and many others in this style, have a museum quality that’s flexible and adaptable to any kind of art. Minimalist and classical art can fit in the same room happily, and traditional pieces with antique, ornate gilded frames add texture and color that may be otherwise lacking. “These houses are much more personal and alive to me,” Caddell says.

Pictured Above: A contemporary home in Solana Beach overlooks the Pacific Ocean and San Dieguito Lagoon.

Pictured Right: This Cardiff-by-the-Sea home incorporates the environment into its design, both inside and out.

“A home should be a collection of things over time that are special and important, not just something that matches the furniture.” Even if the walls were bare of art, they would not be stark and cold – and that’s due to the windows. In bauhaus and modernist style, towering windows and ceilings were used to create an inviting space that soon came to define international style. Those tall windows are designed to draw in natural light, adding the warmth that is sometimes missing from modernism. They also function to bring the outdoors in, making even a contemporary living space feel connected to the scenery. In the innovative and efficient (but beautiful) home in Cardiff, this effect is imperative to the home’s design. From the balcony, a view of the Pacific Ocean stretches into the horizon, adding life and vibrancy to the home, as if it were a living piece of art on the wall. But it serves as more than just a stunning sight. Open the windows and the house is filled with an ocean breeze and sheets of sunlight that help heat and cool the home without electricity. “In a contemporary home, all elements of the Earth are here,” Caddell says. “There’s a multitude of textures – wood, tile, metal, glass, concrete. That’s part of the industrial trend in modernism, but even the water and the light are incorporated because so much of the environment is invited inside.” Glass is everywhere in the Cardiff home, from the glorious windows in every room, to the railings both inside and outside, even to the kitchen backsplash. Space and light are carefully considered here, and it functions not only to immerse oneself in nature, but also to provide an integral connection to every other part of the house. One thing is clear: this trend is here to stay. Actually, it’s more of a staple in home aesthetic by now. Modernism has already proven its longevity in the previous century, and with the addition of smart home technology, energy efficient design and natural elements, it has real staying power for years to come.

Sweet Swimwear

Interview with Amahlia Stevens of Vitamin A Swimwear By Tracey Smith

A

mahlia Stevens, founder and designer of Vitamin A Swimwear, has an eye for elegance, beauty and contour. Her swimwear is meticulously etched and created for sheer, figure-flattering perfection. Stevens is an architect who designs a swimsuit with clean lines and precision that is pleasing to the eye and the client. By slipping on one of her designs, you could be an infamous jet setter in Amalfi, Ibiza or St. Tropez strolling with cool nonchalance, flair and confidence. It’s a sublime mindscape worth traveling because A-Listers adorn themselves with her swimwear. The collection is a mix of natural “Californified” beach

beauty, luxury, chic international appeal with an effortless style that will keep it as a coveted item for most sea mavens. This Laguna Beach native and mother of twin girls shared with

FINE Magazine how her swimwear is her creative existence. Where did you come up with the name Vitamin A? Before I started making bikinis, I had a freelance design consulting firm based in Laguna. I worked for companies big and small, and they all came to me for a revitalization, or a Californiazation… I worked for Levis, Patagonia, Authentic Fitness, and they all had me doing capital brands. I didn’t have a name for the longest time for my design firm; I just called it AS Designs. I [wanted] something clever. I was reading a milk container one

day, and it [said] Vitamin A & D, and I thought there’s gotta be something there! So I decided to leave it Vitamin A and D for designs, and then I kept it at Vitamin A since that was the name of my design firm. How long has Vitamin A Swimwear been in business? Since 2000. Did you start alone? Yes, I did. There used to be – it’s no longer here – an old-fashioned custom swimwear store in Laguna Beach. I went in there with my Calvin Klein bathing suit, and I had them chop it up and cut it into what I wanted the shapes to be, and eventually the owner introduced me to somebody that could make patterns – because I didn’t know anything about making patterns… I was always a beach girl, and I always went to the beach when I was in college, so I certainly had personal knowledge, but no technical. What sets Vitamin A apart? We’re all about sexy, sun-kissed California beauty. There is an understanding or commitment to a design process, design sensibility and a design aesthetic that really sets Vitamin A apart.

Do you think being from Laguna Beach has broadened your creativity? Absolutely. I was born and raised here, it’s part of my DNA, and I think that comes through in the designs. My technical background – not being from this industry – also sets Vitamin A apart. I went to school at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and my degree is in Illustration. Anybody [who] knows about that school knows it’s very rigorous, and it’s very much about “form follows function” – really learning the rules before you can break them. Although I never learned the technicalities of fashion in school, I learned the principles of design. What would you say are your keys to success? I think quality is a huge part of it, a commitment to excellence and caring. I hope somehow in the swimsuits and the designs there’s a sense of authenticity because it’s something that I love to do, and everything I believe in comes out in this medium. I care a lot about sustainability, aesthetic and being a certain type of sexy that’s more understated and sensual than overtly in your face. Nudity, not nakedness.

What inspires you when designing a new collection? I am inspired by travel, modern art, architecture and the women who wear what I design. I’m inspired by what’s going on around me – a lot of the time it’s nature or art. Tell us about EcoLux fabric. Who manufacturers this for you? EcoLux is our exclusive, new, superfine matte jersey swim fabric produced locally in California. It uses recycled nylon fiber to conserve resources and LYCRA xtra life fiber to extend the life of each swimsuit far beyond that of traditional spandex products. Do some name-dropping. What celebs have worn Vitamin A swimwear recently? Rihanna very recently. [Also] Maria Menounous, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johannson, Jessica Alba and Chanel Iman, the IMG model. Finally, what does a perfect day at the beach entail? To just be able to stay in the water as long as possible. Having the shade, warm water and plenty of coconut water to drink (laughter)!

Fearless Skin

Protect Your Skin During Summer Adventures By Kimberly Ceballos

I

f you’re an outdoor enthusiast, your skin needs extra attention due to the beating your outer shell gets. As you play in the sunshine, wind, dirt and water, your skin is pushed to its limits. Here are a few tips to keep your skin healthy, clear and protected while enjoying summer activities.

USE MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREENS AND AVOID CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Always wear SPF 30 sunscreen, but keep it natural. Chemical sunscreens cause irritation to the skin and eyes, and they usually absorb UV radiation, allowing it to pass the surface of the skin. Mineral sunscreens reflect the UV radiation, blocking it from entering the skin. Physical blocks with active ingredients of zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide protect skin from damaging rays that cause sunburns, wrinkles, uneven skin tones, freckling and skin cancer. In a nutshell, mineral sunscreens are much more effective, gentler and safer for your skin. A light, matte physical block, such as Protect by Osmosis Pur Medical

30 F I N E S D.CO M

| FAC E B O O K .C O M / F I N E M AGA Z I N E S

($30 for 30ml), is a perfect choice for those who want to avoid oily, pore-clogging sunscreens. Sunscreens in liquid and cream form absorb into the skin quickly, so they must be re-applied every two hours to avoid a sunburn, regardless of the SPF. For a water-resistant (gender neutral) SPF 30 powdered sunscreen, try the Translucent Éminence Organic Sun Defense ($58). This product stands the test of time and stays effective until you wash it off. STAY CLEAR OF HARSH EXFOLIATING TREATMENTS Routine exfoliation allows for better product penetration, and skin glows more from light particles reflecting off of a smoother surface. However, it’s much wiser to opt for gentle enzymes, mild alpha hydroxyl acids that are below 5% or scrubs, such as the Éminence Strawberry and Rhubarb Dermafoliant ($48). Avoid harsh chemical peels and ablative laser treatments that drastically strip your natural SPF protection and cause your skin to become extremely sun-sensitive.

AVOID PRODUCTS WITH FRAGRANCES Pigmentation can also be triggered by ingredients in your skincare products, especially fragrance. Combine perfumed products with sun exposure, and you get a recipe for disaster. The many chemical components in fragrance can cause inflammation and react with UV light, causing photo-sensitivity and resulting in unwanted pigmentation. Oftentimes, you will see women with blotchy pigmentation on their chests and necks. This can be caused by the perfume reacting with light over the years. CLEANSE IMMEDIATELY AFTER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES After sweating up a storm, you’ll want to cleanse your skin of sweat, dirt, oil and the nasty pollution that builds up on your skin to avoid clogged pores that can lead to breakouts. If you can’t wash right away, use natural facial cleansing wipes such as Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Cleansing Cloths ($6). Visit Beautiful-YouSkinCare.com to contact the owner of Beautiful You: Skin and Body Rejuvenation, medical aesthetician and massage therapist Kimberly Ceballos for all of your skincare needs, or call 619-708-7822.

WINE & DINE

Holy Matcha

Green Dining in a Health-Conscious Community By Lexy Perez

M

ove over caffeine-lovers and set your eyes on the new green matcha machine. Having made its debut in North Park only two months ago, Holy Matcha has become a new city favorite and matcha haven. Although the matcha craze has taken over Los Angeles and New York, Holy Matcha marks the first of its kind in San Diego. Explains owner and founder Geraldine Ridaura, “The main reason I wanted to bring matcha to San Diego is because there was a void in the market. Being a graduate from USD, I wanted to apply what I learned from business school to real life. It feels humbling to open the first matcha café in San Diego.” After traveling to Japan, Ridaura devised her dream of pursuing a business venture with matcha as the focal point. “It all stemmed from not being able to drink coffee. My mother drank matcha, and she was the one that introduced me to it,” reflects Ridaura as she explains the early beginnings of her love for matcha. “Traveling to Japan solidified

my obsession, and I knew from then on I could never drink anything else.” Aside from having a personal connection, Ridaura also accredits her love for matcha to its positive transformations to her health. Through her research, Riadura strongly believes that matcha is a great, if not better, alternative to coffee. “Coffee has its benefits, but matcha is far superior with its health benefits and the effect it has on your body,” explains Ridaura. “Coffee affects the nervous systems – the

reason for the jitters – whereas matcha does not.” Researchers have found that matcha does reap a surplus of health benefits that include lowering cholesterol, increasing energy, reducing stress and inflammation, fighting free radicals and more. Ridaura notes that while she trusted matcha’s health benefits, she instinctively knew that the health-conscious society of San Diego would embrace the Japanese beverage just as much as she envisioned. “I love San Diego. People here are health-conscious now more than ever,” Ridaura explains. “I also knew that the San Diego market wants more elevated concepts that challenge the norm and provide a unique experience, so I am proud to bring something new to San Diego.” Although small, Holy Matcha’s menu features matcha-focused items that accommodate a healthy lifestyle. All of the café’s drinks are dairy-free, giving customers the options of almond or coconut milk. Their menu includes avocado toast, almond toast, vegan yogurt bowls with fruit and matcha chia pudding. Although healthy, the café doesn’t let the fear of diet rules prevent them from offering decadent sweets. The menu also includes customer-favorite vegan matcha donuts and matcha pound cake that can perfectly complement any of the lattes, teas and lemonades offered. “I wanted to keep the menu simple yet impactful, which meant all the flavors needed to be amazing. Every item on the menu I had been making at home for myself prior to opening Holy Matcha. The drinks were all my personal taste, especially the lemonades,” says Ridaura.

2 DAYS

OF ENTERTAINMENT, CAMARADERIE, AND JUST GOOD FUN

“I wanted to keep the menu simple yet impactful, which meant all the flavors needed to be amazing.” Healthy and reasonably-priced, it can be surprising to know that the café décor could play a large role in why customers love the North Park residency as much as they do. As soon as customers walk into the shop, they’re faced with millennial-pink, floral decorations and a hipster ambiance that screams Instagram goals. Ridaura explains that the visual concept was devised long before the location opened its doors. After joining forces with interior design firm HOMEWORK, Holy Matcha became the new pink royalty of North Park, something Ridaura knew would stand out among traditional coffee shops and eateries. “Since this was the first matcha cafe in San Diego, I knew from the beginning it had to take a different form than

44 F I N E S D.CO M

| FAC E B O O K .C O M / F I N E M AGA Z I N E S

the minimalist look that’s found in many of the coffee shops here,” Ridaura says. “I decided to pull inspiration from my travels and up the wow factor with the design to create something unique, elegant and of-the-moment.” The result became something Ridaura is proud of, further adding, “The space [has] cool, chill vibes [and] an elegance that makes it feel like you’re at a modern-day tea parlor.” Holy Matcha’s décor features a custom pink velvet banquette, a quartz book-matched waterfall bar, vintage-inspired seating and floral decorations that make customers feel as if they’re in a Garden of Eden. Although success is never guaranteed, Ridaura states that the reception to her café has been overwhelming, only validating her pursuit of her personal business venture more. “The many positive interactions I’ve had with my customers and support I’ve experienced since opening has only confirmed that I made the right choice,” Ridaura happily adds. While Ridaura says her future looks “busy and pink,” the possibility for future endeavors is not out of the question. “Holy Matcha is my everything for the time being, but why stop here? You never know,” suggests Ridaura. Whatever her next venture is, it’s safe to say the city will be ready.

ONE MORE THING

Extreme Adventure Group By Melissa Burciaga

What inspired you to start this group? I moved here from Indiana, and I [got] into hiking. I told myself, “I’m [moving] to California and starting a new life – I’m gonna take advantage of everything.” I started hiking with a neighbor of mine [that] ended up moving to another state. One of the guys I work with suggested I try Meetup. I thought it was a dating site; I had never heard of it before! I gave it a shot and started SoCal X. [I] started out with some simple stuff, some hikes and Balboa Park… just some basic stuff around San Diego that I had never been to, and [the group] has blown up from there. What adventure trips are your favorite? The first place I explored when I came to California were the Sunset Cliffs. I didn’t have the nerves to climb down the cliffs and see caves. No matter how many times I go to Sunset Cliffs, I always get a kick out of it. I also really enjoy exploring abandoned mines out in the desert, and that takes a lot of technical skill… There are cave systems around Campo, but the deep gold and tungsten mines that I’ve explored in the Mojave Desert [are

50 F I N E

M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

my favorite]. Now [we] repel down vertical mine shafts. We have repelling practice from time to time [to] try to teach the skill. How does SoCal X choose the locations? For the first couple of years, it was mainly San Diego County stuff. I’d go to various websites and look up abandoned places – caves, waterfalls, points of interest, hiking destinations. I use a couple different tools like old mine registries, historic documents and Google Earth. I know what to look for in the satellite imagery, so I know how to track mines. I’ll repeat some trips like Sunset Cliffs during the summer since it’s fun to get in the water. What would you tell people that are unsure of joining the group? There are a lot of Meetup groups and hiking groups around San Diego. My group isn’t for beginners because we get into dangerous stuff. I really hate to turn people away, but there are a few basic questions people have to answer in order to join the group. What’s your rappelling and rope group skill from one to ten? What’s your exploring underground experience from one to ten? How would you rate your ability to navigate rough terrain off-trail? If someone signs up and they give me all ones, there are other groups that are more that speed. Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers? SoCal X would be nothing without the people in the group. Our core group of people are fantastic, and I put my life in their hands. I’ve met some really incredible people because of SoCal X.

merica’s Finest City is filled with exciting places to visit, so it’s no surprise that it’s filled with adventure groups that meet and organize themselves through the Meetup app. One group in particular, SoCal X (founded October 2012), is an adventure and exploration group that has captivated social media with their breathtaking photos of magical places around San Diego. FINE Magazine spoke to the founder of SoCal X, Trevor Mottram, about San Diego’s most extreme adventure group.
