Start with Brunch

There are plenty of brunch restaurants at the Del Mar Plaza with delicious options to get you started and fuel your day.

From Open to Close: Here’s How to Spend the Day at the Del Mar Plaza

From brunch to pampering to shopping and happy hour cocktails, the Del Mar Plaza has everything you need to enjoy yourself for the day. So grab your friends, family, or indulge in some me-time and get ready to take in the incredible ocean views and beautiful sunny skies. Here’s what you need to know to spend an epic day at the Del Mar Plaza.

1555 Camino Del Mar Del Mar, CA delmarplaza.com

• Pacifica Breeze Café is a Del Mar favorite for both breakfast and lunch. Their menu includes mouth-watering items like the Del Mar Power Scramble, eggs Benedict, shrimp and grits, cinnamon brioche French toast, avocado toast, soup, salad, and sandwiches. The café also has Bloody Marys, mimosas, and beer for you, and a Kid’s Breakfast menu if you have little ones in tow. Best of all, you can enjoy all these dishes and drinks out on their sun-filled patio, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Village of Old Del Mar.

• You can also enjoy brunch favorites like eggs Benedict, sugar-spiced salmon hash, homemade lox and bagel, buttermilk pancakes, and a variety of omelets at Pacifica Del Mar. The restaurant also has an extensive cocktail and wine list, plus more than 100 vodkas behind their bar—all of which can lead to a spirited start to your morning. • Il Fornaio and Enoteca del Fornaio both offer an Italian take on popular brunch dishes. Try the Frittelle Allo Sciroppo D’Acero (pancakes), Uova Alla Benedettina, Frittata Con Gamberi E Spinaci, or Pizza Papalina and don’t forget to order a mimosa, Leonardo, or Bellini.

Once you’re full and fueled, take a short walk down to the beach and walk along the shore. As one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in San Diego, it’s a perfect place to relax, get in a little exercise, or simply soak up the sun. After a little R & R by the sea, you can head back up to the Plaza for shopping, pampering, and imbibing.

12:00 PM

Take Some Time to Pamper Yourself

Whether you bring your family and friends with you or send your children off to surf lessons so you can have some peace and quiet, the salons at the Plaza are the perfect place to spend a few hours spoiling yourself. • Del Mar Nails and Spa is the place to indulge. Services include six different kinds of manicures, six different types of pedicures, two facial options, and a number of waxing services; the salon has packages as well, so you can spend a little extra time pampering. • Momma’s Medi Spa offers a little more intensive indulgence. Make an

appointment for a peel, facial, cellulite treatment, or even fillers and Botox, and leave feeling like a new person. • With your face glowing and nails polished, visit Haim, Ltd. Salon to get your hair done. You can spend some time getting your hair cut and colored, or stop by for a quick pick-me-up like a styling session, blowout, or makeup application. • Salon Republic has a variety of beauty offerings. Because the studio rents out space to salon professionals from all parts of the industry, you can stop in to get a haircut, massage, facial, and lash extensions or have your makeup done and eyebrows groomed.

2:00 PM

Shop ‘Til You Drop

It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to update your own wardrobe, or shopping to find the perfect gift for someone you care about, the Plaza has the shops and boutiques to help you find that perfect item. When you have nothing to wear or need a few key pieces to ring in the new season, visit one of these fabulous apparel stores. • Banana Republic is a tried and true favorite. Their apparel has casual, west-coast vibes that can be worn out on another night with the girls, or even in the office. • Coco Rose has a fantastic collection of tunics, rompers, and sundresses with a bohemian flair. You can find an outfit perfect for the seemingly endless summers here in Del Mar. • Gary’s Studio has a selection of stylish and sophisticated suits for men. Far from boring, their collection includes bold colors and eye-catching patterns. • A new “athleisure” outfit from Lorna Jane will keep you looking trendy while potentially encouraging you to break a sweat (in style, of course).

• Peaches En Regalia is a little boutique with lots of high-end pieces to choose from. You can find great shirts and sundresses in eye-catching patterns, and grab a couple accessories to match. • Urban Beach House has California-cool items for the whole family. You can grab everything you’d need to hit the surf, as well as San Diego-branded shirts, hats, and sweatshirts to help you remember your visit to the Plaza. Looking for a thoughtful gift for a friend or family member? (Or even yourself?) The Plaza has a number of gift, décor, accessory, and jewelry shops with a little something for every personality and budget. • Del Mar Art Center is a non-profit gallery that showcases some of the city’s up-andcoming artists. You can stop in to just appreciate the artwork, or pick out a unique piece you can’t get anywhere else. • Loghman Jewelers opened shop with the intention of bringing beautiful, handmade Italian jewelry to Del Mar. They’ve expanded their collection to include stunning pieces from Germany, Sweden, France, and the U.S., as well as custom-made engagement

rings. So if you’re looking for something that sparkles, this should be your first stop. • Made In Earth creates jewelry pieces built around semi-precious gemstones. Because each piece is inspired by nature and designed with natural gemstones and crystals, every item is one of a kind. • Michael Seewald Galleries features photographs by the artist from around the world. You can choose a piece of artwork that really speaks to you, or invest in photography classes for a gift that will last a lifetime. • Sunglass Hut has all the stylish shades you need for hanging out in the Southern California sun. Here, you’ll find the latest trends and popular designers to keep you (or your gift recipient) looking cool. • Urban Girl Accessories has a fun, eclectic mix of gifts, jewelry, and clothing. They also have chic California-themed items and gifts for fashionista, hostess, or wine-enthusiast in your life.

6:00 PM

End the Day with Dinner & Drinks

After spending quality time out and about at the Plaza, you’ll definitely want to end the day on a high note—with dinner and drinks, of course. There are so many delicious dining choices, we wouldn’t blame you if you decided to hop around and try them all. • Del Mar Rendezvous is an award-winning restaurant with modern Chinese cuisine. You can choose from traditional noodle and rice dishes, or try one of their signature entrees like the Pungent Crispy Chicken, Shrimp and Scallop Sauté, or Buddha’s

Treasure. They offer gluten-free, vegetarians, and vegan options as well. • Pacifica Del Mar is another award-winning restaurant, known for their seafood and coastal cuisine. The restaurant also has more than 100 of the world’s finest vodkas at their ocean bar and daily happy hour specials. • Shimbashi Izakaya has a menu of fresh seafood, sashimi, sushi, udon noodles, and other modern Japanese dishes. The restaurant is set up with several dining areas, each with its own unique atmosphere; you can sit in the traditional dining room, outside on the patio, at the sake bar (which has cocktails, beer, and dozens of sake), or at the sushi bar to watch the chefs work.

• If Italian food is more your thing, grab a table at Il Fornaio or Enoteca del Fornaio. Both restaurants use the freshest ingredients and traditional cooking techniques to create authentic Italian dishes. They also offer a wide variety of premium-quality wines and cocktails to pair with your dinner. • If you are looking for a quick, yet satisfying, option, Smashburger is a must. You can dine in with your friends and family or order your burger and fries to-go and reminisce on the day’s events in the car ride or walk home.

The Del Mar Plaza truly has everything you need for a day of self-indulgence or quality time spent with loved ones. Visit us at delmarplaza.com for business hours and more information.

Holiday Fun in Julian The rural town celebrates Christmas with fun events and activities for all ages. By Lexy Perez

I

t may seem rather difficult to go “walking in a winter wonderland” in California, but deep in the Cuyamaca mountains, the town of Julian still celebrates Christmas the old-fashioned way. Holiday-lovers find great joy and fun in their festivities every year. During the holidays, sleigh bells begin appearing as snow falls from the sky leaving the whole town painted in white perfectly replicating a ‘California version of the North Pole.’ And although many may have their own holiday traditions, Julian offers varied activities and opportunities to celebrate the winter holiday in a way that even Santa Claus would find fitting. The winter festivities begin on Nov. 26 with the annual Country Christmas Tree Lighting. Presented by the Julian Merchants Association, hundreds of visitors gather at Pioneer Park to witness the gorgeous lighting of the Christmas tree. The event begins at 2 p.m. Additional fun will be hosted by the Fort Cross Old Timey

Visitors can sip the town’s renowned apple cider or hot chocolate, while singing along to the holiday tunes. Plus, Julian is home to their signature apple pies and cinnamon rolls. Whether caroling or sightseeing in this rural town, Julian transforms into that winter wonderland of everyone’s dreams to assure that every guest enjoys a “Holly Jolly Christmas.”

A Little Goes a Long, Long Way

S St. James Academy Aims to Impact Others By Lisa Fitzpatrick

adly today, there are still more than three billion people who live on less than $2.50 a day. THREE BILLION. And a staggering 805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. Indeed for the poverty stricken, a tiny bit of kindness creates a dramatic change in their life. Over 40 years ago, Father John Howard from Saint James and Saint Leo’s Parish Community in Solana Beach, recognized the huge impact that small acts of service made and founded Mission Circle. Since then, Mission Circle has been involved in many life-changing programs that actively reach out to those in need. One such enriching program is an all-girls school and home in Tijuana, Mexico called Casa Eudes. Other programs include local homeless outreach programs, internation-

al food programs for the hungry, disaster relief and a prison ministry. St. James Academy is North County’s premier Catholic school. Indeed since 1952, the school has remained devoted to excellence in teaching the principles of Catholic faith, while providing each child with a learning environment in which they can grow toward their God-given potential to become leaders and stewards. Student’s develop lifelong skills that incorporate confidence and competency in their growth as critical thinkers and problem solvers in our ever changing world. This year, St. James Academy is working with the parish and Mission Circle to continue to support those in need. In fact, on March 10, St. James Academy will be celebrating their annual renowned gala, Under the Sea. The popular gala is the largest fundraising event for St. James Academy; and this year 10 percent of sponsorship proceeds above $2500 will be donated directly to Mission Circle. An incredibly generous addition to a wonderful cause! In addition to the donations, St. James Academy is actively involved in numerous outreach programs with Mission Circle. In October, Mission Circle made 60,000 meals for the needy with the generous help of St. James families. And this year, the St. James gala team worked with students to decorate a Christmas decoration of a starfish that will be sold with a portion of the proceeds going straight to Casa Eudes in support of their Christmas party. Of course, these represent only a couple examples of a few “small acts of kindness” from the families at St. James Academy- naturally, many more are planned for the rest of the school year. In the spirit of the Christmas season we thoughtfully recall words by Charles Dickens: “A little key will open a very heavy door.” Certainly, St. James, St. Leo’s Parish, St. James Academy and Mission Circle aim to be that little key which opens the heavy door to those in need. May we all contribute keys of any size to open as many doors as possible. If you’re interested in participating in any St. James Academy outreach events or in sponsorship funding, please contact St. James Academy Sponsorship Chair, Lisa Fitzpatrick at (858) 444-6510 lfitzpatrick858@gmail.com.

San Diego Rescue Mission How You Can Help a Charity That Saves Lives By Nicole Bradley-Bernard

I

t has been estimated that homelessness has gone up by as much as 5 percent since last year in San Diego. With homelessness in San Diego on the rise, places like the San Diego Rescue Mission are essential and need community support to expand their programs.

WHAT IS THE SAN DIEGO RESCUE MISSION? Beginning in 1955, the San Diego Rescue Mission has been providing food, clothing, and spiritual direction to the homeless community of San Diego. Since then, they have opened several different facilities and incorporated several different programs to accommodate the changing needs of the homeless population. For example, in 1960 the Mission made local history by opening the first shelter for women and children in the county. Today, the mission has expanded into a thriving faith-driven shelter that has, in the last year, successfully sheltered 157,826 people, provided 399,647 meals, and collected 2,410,952 pounds of food. The Mission flourishes by starting with the basis of Christian principles and teaching the homeless about Christ so they can then begin to heal and address the main causes of homelessness (mental illness,

addiction, abuse, chronic homelessness, etc.). Through bringing the homeless to Christ, the San Diego Rescue Mission hopes to provide the encouragement needed to help the homeless get out of their situation. PROGRAMS The San Diego Rescue Mission has ten different programs all catered to help the homeless with everything from overcoming addiction and embracing their spiritual growth through Christ, to food and shelter and programs aimed at ensuring a brighter future by making them more self-sufficient. They even have a service for homeless single mothers that have children from two to five years of age called the Children’s Center Preschool. This service provides somewhere safe and educational for the mothers to leave their children during the day so that they can begin working to better their situation and future by going back to school and/or getting job training. Also, they have programs that work towards maintaining a lack of homelessness after independence has been re-obtained through therapy and support for ensuring sobriety. These wonderful programs display just how thoroughly the Rescue Mission has worked with the needs of the homeless in mind to make the most useful shelter system possible to help solve the problem. THE FUTURE OF THE SAN DIEGO RESCUE MISSION On December 16th, the Rescue Mission will be holding their annual Christmas holiday meal with entertainment. And in 2018, the Rescue Mission will be bringing back their charity event “Sleepless in San Diego” for the 11th year to raise awareness for homelessness. Held in

the fall, the inspiring event offers a full day of service followed by a celebration (where staying the night is optional). Funds will focus on the future of the organization. Currently, the charity performs amazing work and has expanded their services in wonderful ways. However, there still aren’t adequate funds to include every homeless person (as is the ultimate goal) in every program available to them. In the future, the charity hopes to continue to grow their programs to include and assist the homeless people who are still in need of service. HOW YOU CAN HELP To help this charity that saves the lives of the less fortunate, check out the San Diego Rescue Mission’s website. Keep in mind that only a $205 donation will provide 100 meals- what a wonderful way to give back this season. On their website, you can make a cash donation, find out how to donate lightly used goods, and view their available volunteer opportunities. www.sdrescue.org.

Ocean Discovery Institute How You Can Help a Charity for the Future By Nicole Bradley-Bernard

F

or many San Diego is the Jewel- a city that represents warm beaches, lovely parks, beautiful scenery, vibrant neighborhoods and the even the world-famous zoo. However, some children experience their city in quite a different light. For example, many children living in the community of City Heights, San Diego, have never visited these city highlights and also lack natural areas to explore within their immediate environment. Additionally, many of these children have a

limited science education due to a scarcity of resources at their school. WHAT IS THE OCEAN DISCOVERY INSTITUTE? The Ocean Discovery Institute is an organization whose main goal is to revolutionize young lives through science by starting where there is much diversity and need for such a project. The theory is that by exposing the young children of City Heights to real-life science both in the class-

room and on the shores of the nearby ocean, the children will become curious and develop a lifelong thirst for knowledge (especially regarding science and conservation). And this theory has been proven true by the institute’s success rates. In fact, Ocean Discovery students are eight times more likely to earn a college degree within five years compared to the average low-income college student. Furthermore, nine out of 13 schools served by the institute have seen a significant increase in science test scores, and seven out of ten Ocean Discovery college students choose to major in a scientific field. Plus, in 2016, 100 percent of the students in the College Access Mentor Program were accepted into college. This organization has been so successful and inspiring, in fact, that founder and executive director Shara Fisler changed her career path to make it grow from a simple summer camp to what it is today. PROGRAMS The Ocean Discovery Institute has three major programs that help ensure a successful future for the young people of City Heights. Starting with the program that partners with the schools to work with them to ensure better science education. Through working with students alongside their teachers, students are engaged in hands-on science to fully excite their minds. Ocean Discovery Institute also encourages families to get involved by sponsoring community programs that encourage student leadership and conservation through restoration of some of the canyons in the area. They also have leadership programs that help ensure that children interested in a career in science and conservation have the right tools to achieve their goals. Through after-school and summer programs, students become “Ocean Leaders” who learn about the world of science by working alongside actual scientists and teachers conducting research and helping with projects. These experiences allow the children to get excited about their education and their future by showing them first-hand what the future could hold for them as scientists. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE OCEAN DISCOVERY INSTITUTE? Soon the Ocean Discovery Institute will be opening the doors to their new Living Lab, which will be the Ocean Discovery Institute’s permanent site in the middle of City Heights. The science and conservation education facility has partnered up with the San Diego Unified School District and is often within walking distance for most kids. It will be a place where students and teachers can learn science alongside scientists and researchers. Unfortunately, construction

delays have postponed the initial grand opening, but by the beginning of next year we can all look forward to wonderful things taking place at the Ocean Discovery Institute. HOW YOU CAN HELP To get involved and help with this wonderful cause check out the Ocean Discovery Institute’s available volunteer positions on their website. Or, if you’re short on spare time, consider making a donation. You can also check out the list of non-cash donation options on the website including donating lab supplies, diving supplies, food, etc. www.oceandiscoveryinstitute.org

We have ladies who lunch and gents who golf—all for the good of others. We are a community that gives and is home to many philanthropists. One prominent community philanthropist is businesswoman Irene Valenti. You might know her as the face of her well-known Matchmaking company, Valenti International, but you might not be familiar with her philanthropic work which spans 27 years. She is a Rancho Santa Fe Rotary member/Paul Harris Fellow and has received numerous commendations and distinctions for her service. In 2005, Ms. Valenti formally established The Valenti Foundation, a 501 (c)(3), as a means to help transform the lives of San Diego’s most vulnerable. The Valenti Foundation lends support to numerous charitable organizations, including Mainly Mozart, Kids Korp, Ronald McDonald House, Rady’s Children Hospital, Orchestra Nova, Friends of San

Pasqual Academy, Falcon Ridge Equine Rescue, Country Friends and many more. A major charitable event that Ms.Valenti hosted benefited children in need. With Father Joe Carroll of Father Joe’s Village as the guest of honor, the event supported the development of “A Children’s Village.” This project was created to give 200 neglected and vulnerable children not only a home, but also a sense of purpose, character, and dignity. The Valenti Foundation was presented with a special commendation from then councilman, now assemblyman, Brian Maienschein for supporting Father Joe’s Village. As San Diego’s largest homeless services provider, Father Joe’s Village offers a wide variety of housing and services to those in need. In addition to supporting causes for children and the elderly, Ms. Valenti is passionately dedicated to animals – especially horses. With the Valenti Equestrian Club located on her Rancho Santa Fe property, Ms. Valenti has hosted and supported many fundraisers benefitting creatures large and small. She hosted “For the Love of Horses,” with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars La Jolla, benefitting Saving Horses. This non-profit organization rescues horses and provides equine-assisted therapy programs. Most recently, Valenti International welcomed Breeders’ Cup to San Diego for the very first time, by helping raise funds and awareness for Thoroughbred Charities of America. This charitable organization works to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds by supporting qualified repurposing and retirement organizations, as well as backstretch and farm workers that care for Thoroughbreds. And when wildfires burned over 100,000 acres across Northern California this fall, Ms. Valenti jumped in to help with donations and the collection of funds, supplies and warm blankets for the victims. “So much of this giving would not be possible without the assistance of wonderful friends, clients and the Rotarians, who give so much of themselves without expecting anything in return,” says Ms. Valenti. “I especially enjoy being able to provide random acts of kindness, helping those who just need that little boost to get them over a tough spot in their lives.” FINE magazine applauds Ms. Valenti and the countless other San Diegans who give back to our community every day. May we all embrace the spirit of giving now and throughout the coming year.

DESIGNING AT KERN & COMPANY nterior Designer Susan Spath and her team of design professionals are in the business of making dreams come true. Be it a single room refresh or a full scale new construction project, Spath has established herself as one of San Diego’s “go-to” sources for creating livable and luxurious spaces that are as much about a client’s life as they are about their own personal style. Beginning with a design process that pivots on communication, Spath works with clients to define how each space will be used on a day-today basis, as well as closely listening to how they may see a particular space evolve. Wielding her particular brand of design magic, Spath then manages to merge these uses and wishes into finished spaces that are elegant, dynamic and very personalized. Along with her design studio, Spath owns and operates design and décor showroom Kern &

Company. With locations in Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe, Spath and her team draw upon a collection of high end products that represent the design trade’s “best in class” brands encompassing furnishings, lighting, décor and textiles. Spath’s expertise, however, is her ability to see beyond color and texture as she routinely incorporates architecture, light flow and subtle detailing into layered and nuanced designs. A firm believer in the concept of timeless design, Spath’s spaces incorporate a mélange of styles and influences that, while seeming traditional and classic, are actually quite contemporary in their execution. It is through her subtle and refined eye that Spath recently let us in on some of her favorite trends in home and interior design. CLASSIC “Classic always wins,” states Spath. For the past year everyone has wanted a classic white kitchen to complement the light wood finishes that have been so popular with homeowners. In spaces other than a kitchen, Spath balances light and dark furnishings against crisp whites in a manner that evokes a traditional French farmhouse, or nods toward classic Spanish colonialism. Incorporating more traditional pieces, she

believes, brings a dynamic element to the space that lets one introduce modern pieces that bring a room to life. PASTELS As anyone familiar with the term “Millennial Pink” will inform you, white isn’t the only color story in the news. In 2017, people are asking for color in their rooms like never before. Dusty pastels like lavender, pink and blush are being mixed in light filled spaces with a decidedly fresh take on interior living. “Sometimes a dash of a color can really bring the room together and lend it a lighter, fresh look - which is exactly what everyone wants,” states Spath. “Sometimes we’ll add a lavender chair to complement an all white room. Sometimes it’s a lavender room with white accents. Color splashes really work to bring a room together.” JEWEL TONES Along with pastels, lush jewel tones have begun to shine as a trend in interior design. Used as an accent piece or in lush Hollywood Regency style upholstery, colors like claret, plum or emerald are a great way to bring a space to life with a decidedly modern flair. “Sometimes we see an emerald coffee table, paired with an all

white sofa and mixed in with dark wood accents. Emerald is actually a great way to add color to a room without it becoming overwhelming,” hints Spath. “Combining jewel tones with gold or perhaps some layered crystal accents, gives a space that fresh feel; a feel that moves it beyond any particular style.”

FABRICS Given our indoor/outdoor lifestyle in Southern California, the role fabric plays in design has always been paramount. Thankfully, advances in technology have broadened the choices available to homeowners like never before, with durable “performance fabrics” capturing everyone’s attention at the moment. Once relegated to patio cushions and umbrella covers, modern performance fabrics have moved inside the home. In doing so, they have brought new found style and flexibility to myriads of families with children and pets. “Manufacturers have brought so many performance options to the market, that families don’t have to sacrifice style for function any more. We can have beautiful spaces that are durable and stand up well to use!” Spath says. “By the same token, we can create outdoor living spaces that really incorporate and celebrate the lifestyle California is known for!”

Create the Holiday That You Want to Have “Our desire to create the perfect holiday experience can sabotage the joy and meaning that we are ultimately looking to achieve.”

44

O

nce again it is the holiday season. This time of year conjures a wide array of emotions. The excitement of decorating, parties, festive activities, and celebration evokes feelings of happiness and joy. The reality of planning, travel, overscheduling, shopping, and navigating family gatherings, however, can lead to stress, fatigue, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed. Our desire to create the perfect holiday experience can sabotage the joy and meaning that we are ultimately looking to achieve. One of the questions that I often ask my patients is if they are living the life that they want to live, and if not, why? There are many complicated and individual answers to this question. As the holiday season can elicit profound effects on health and overall well being, I suggest that you create the holiday that you want to have rather than the holiday that you think you should have. Release the expectations of the perfect holiday experience, and focus on what is personally meaningful. What activities and traditions would bring you joy and peace? That is not only the best gift that you can give yourself, but it is also a beautiful gift to pass on to children. It lifts external pressures and allows for true enjoyment. As everyone’s values, background, cultures, and family life are vastly different, this is a very personalized approach. Years ago, I was debating on a gift for my father. I asked my mother for suggestions. She proposed a high-end pen. This did not resonate with me, even though I wanted to give my father something that he desired. A dear mentor of mine advised that I give a gift that I wanted to give rather than something that felt insignificant to me, as no matter how that gift was received, I would feel good that it was consistent with my values. I heeded her wisdom, and gave my father an album of our times together. This resulted in a moving experience that was important to both of us. As you consider what is meaningful to you, understand that not all members of your family may have the same thoughts and feelings. That is perfectly normal. The idea is to explore what is deeply joyful to you, rather than being a conduit to external pressures. It also opens the door to

Tips for Holiday Well Being

*

Take some quiet time to envision what is a personally meaningful holiday experience, and let that be your guide.

*

Focus on being present with family rather than just engaging in non-stop activities.

*

Give yourself permission for downtime. Avoid overscheduling. Remember, it’s okay to say “no.”

*

Adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise are important as they ensure overall well-being and the ability to handle life’s stressors.

San Diego is Mad for Nomad The gourmet donut shop revamps with new delicious location By Lexy Perez

S

ince making its debut in North Park in 2014, Nomad Donuts has grown to become one of San Diego’s most innovative eateries, conspired of unique donut flavors that have captured the attention of locals. While the established shop cultivated success, the buzzed about eatery outgrew its prior location, resulting in a second and substantially larger Nomad Donuts Bakery Café opening on the corner of Illinois and University Avenue.

The revamped location includes an espresso bar, a chef’s counter and ample seating space for customers. While new, the location feels like home to Nomad Donuts co-founder Brad Keiller. “North Park is my home, I live two blocks from the shop,” says Keiller. “In fact a lot of our staff lives here or in the surrounding neighborhoods. We live, eat, play and work here. It’s also our demographic.” Despite donut shops existing throughout the county, Nomad Donuts has created a name for itself by offering a different approach to the renowned sweet treat. A principle the shop stands by is straying from the norm, for being different has set this bakery café apart from the rest. With a glance of the menu, it is conspicuous that traditional donut flavors were just a blueprint to what would become a Nomad specialty. Kristianna Zabala, Nomad’s resident pastry chef and co-own-

er, embraces creativity to devise a gourmet take on donuts, something that can appeal to the likes of Gordon Ramsey or Anthony Bourdain. “The theme of Nomad is to bring flavors from our travels and experience with other cultures and introduce them to the humble donut,” says Keiller. “Kristianna embraced it and took it to the next level. She’s now doing it with our bagel sandwiches and pastries.” At first glance, Zabala’s flavor combos can seem unusual. Unique flavors range from the Chorizo Scotch Egg (a soft to medium boiled egg wrapped in chorizo, layered in a corn cheddar jalapeño cake and coated with a cilantro glaze) to a Honey Sesame Ginger Kimchi Candied Bacon donut that embraces Korean barbecue flavors. While not traditional donuts like glaze or chocolate, the unique flavors have customers wanting more. “We wanted to offer something different, donuts we wanted to eat,” explains Zabala of her specialty donuts. Keiller adds, “There are plenty of regular donut shops out there and I wanted to differentiate.” Whether dining with friends, listening to customer requests or noticing trending foods, inspiration exists everywhere for Zabala, who creates a menu that changes daily. Although she has created a variety of donuts, Zabala pinpoints the Ube Taro Coconut, Mexican Hot Chocolate, S’more, PB&J, the Churro Con Chocolate and the Haupia Coconut Coffee donuts as customer favorites. “Sometimes it’s transforming flavor combinations from savory dishes into a donut, other times it’s complementing flavors such as sweet, tart, spicy, bitter, etc., to create a harmonious donut,” Zabala says of the creative process behind her unique flavors. The bakery café also offers breakfast sandwiches, Montreal-style bagels and a surplus of vegan friendly donuts. Each menu item is created with ingredients from local farmers and community retailers. “We started out making our donuts from scratch, without preservatives and using real fruits and vegetables for quality and flavor reasons. It’s just what we thought would taste best,” says Keiller. She adds, “Our vegan donuts are a response to what customers were asking for and it was something that we could do without sacrificing quality, flavor and texture.” Zabala explains that apart from supporting locals, they strive to deliver donuts created from the freshest ingredients, “We want to support local farms and businesses, but it’s also about quality and freshness. Further supporting their city, Keiller and Zabala collaborate with over 50 breweries and local restaurants that include: Carnitas Snack Shack, Grand Ole BBQ Asado, Mastiff, Tiger Ti-

ger, Uptown Tavern, Cueva Bar and Alice Birney Elementary School. Exclusive Nomad flavors can be found at select breweries and have even inspired limited edition craft beers. “We collaborate with other small businesses that are doing things we like and who want to have fun with it,” says Keiller. “We’re pretty lucky in that if we would like to collaborate with anyone they usually say yes.” Humbled by the positive response from local communities, Keiller finds joy in seeing customer satisfaction and hopes their shop can keep

customers wanting more. “I hope they have a flavor experience they’ve never had before. A lot of thought and consideration goes into the flavor combinations and it’s really cool to watch someone experience it for the first time. Very gratifying.” With a larger location and a former one under renovations, Keiller would love to extend the Nomad branch to other locations, but not quite yet. They may have gained quality success, but to Keiller their drive is what keeps them going, “I really think we are just getting started in many ways.”

WINE & D INE

Holiday Ready For Your Party By Vanessa Fleur

B

esides the obvious: make a list, prep ahead, self-serve bar–we decided to share some expert tips and hosting rules of thumb to make your gathering a “ginger” snap this year.

HOLIDAY PARTY TIPS DECIDE ON DECORATIONS “When it comes to decorations, think small. Save space for food by displaying low arrangements of blooms in lieu of a large centerpiece. Use small accents, such as gilded nuts, to fill any empty spots on the dining or buffet table.” –Martha Stewart

GIVE YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THE VIP SPIRIT... “Show you’re a gracious host* by stocking up on the exact bourbon or microbrew that a friend drinks. It’s a thoughtful gesture.” –Soraya Jollon, party planner extraordinaire

*As a guest, show how gracious you are for not having to host and bring your favorite bottle to stock up the host’s bar!

RECOMMENDED HOLIDAY BEER FROM BALLAST POINT ORANGE VANILLA FATHOM • India Pale Lager With Orange & Vanilla • A sweeter take on an award-winning IPL Our Orange Vanilla Fathom India Pale Lager continues our quest for exploration. The piney and citrus hop aromas of our Fathom IPL combines with sweet orange and creamy vanilla – while staying true to classic lagering techniques. Brewed with a touch of nostalgia, it may remind you of a childhood treat, but this one is just for adults.

52

OFFER A SIGNATURE GUILT-FREE DRINK “Mix up some wine with club soda or diet citrus soda, add a splash of low-cal juice (think cranberry), and a pretty piece of fruit, like a raspberry. Give it a catchy name, and you’ll have a festive drink that won’t derail anyone’s diet. You don’t have to go with grog or nog!” –Bethany Thayer, director of the Henry Ford Health System’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Detroit

WHICH WINE? “Sauvignon Blanc (which is light and fruity) and Cabernet Sauvignon (think cocoa and cinnamon) go with practically anything and taste good to pretty much anyone.” –Margrit Mondavi, wife of the late Robert Mondavi

PARTY PLANNING RULES OF THUMB WHO is on the guest list? It’s suggested to invite your guests at least three to four weeks out, if not sooner, as calendars tend to fill up fast around the holiday season.

WHAT kind of party?

Giving your party invite a descriptive name such as: “Holiday Cocktail Party” or “Open House & Buffet Supper,” makes the invite simple and efficient. Allowing both you and your guest more time to focus on preparing for your soirée.

WHEN do you ask for help? NOW! Solicit help, such as a moving crew, early and often! Star caterers and moving crews also book up quickly, so make sure to plan your party around your team’s availability so you aren’t left doing all the heavy lifting.

WHERE will everything go? A week before your event, if not sooner, set the stage. Inventory items to be moved and stored, and choose what cookingware and serving dishes will be used. Lighting and décor should be decided, as well as where the food, bar, coats, clean-up station, additional seating, and music will be set up. Be sure that you invited 20 percent more people than you can fit in your space; and, if you’re planning to host in your home don’t forget to invite your neighbors.

WHY are you hosting? There is a welcomed warmth that a hosts feels when all their efforts are realized and they can savor in the joy created by bringing their friends together. This holiday season don’t forget that your party is about how YOU want to do things. And if you follow that rule you will always feel more relaxed at your party. It’s a celebration, not a competition!

HOW much alcohol to buy? Plan on two drinks per person for the first two hours of your gathering and after that, one drink per person for each additional hour. One can assume 40 percent beer, 30 percent hard liquor, and 30 percent wine, unless you know otherwise for your invitees.

GIVING BACK By Rosalie Cushman

With the holidays upon us, giving is in the air. Besides gifts for friends and family, many folks like to contribute to their favorite charities as a way to give back. We’ve profiled five local charities and five national ones that help improve the lives of those less fortunate. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS SAN DIEGO COUNTY With the intent of “Changing Perspectives. Changing Lives” San Diego’s Big Brothers Big Sisters have helped shaped children in need. For 55 years the San Diego chapter of this national organization has matched “Bigs” (the mentor) and “Littles” (a child living with adversity). This partnership enables them to grow to their fullest capability. Each adult mentor supports, encourages and guides their mentee, forming meaningful and often lasting relationships that can span a lifetime. By capitalizing on those characteristics and interests that are identified and encouraged, facilitating hope and planting the seeds of healthy self-esteem and acceptance, many children grow

up to live fulfilling and productive lives. Each pair meets for several hours each week for fun and rewarding activities. Time commitments can differ depending on program activities. Possibilities include Community Mentoring, Sports Bigs, Operation Bigs and Amachi Mentoring. Additional programs include Site Based Programs, Operation Bigs, High School Bigs and Beyond School Walls. To donate time, treasure and talent, visit their website at www.sdbigs.org

JACOBS & CUSHMAN SAN DIEGO FOOD BANK Serving over 370,000 people monthly, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief distribution outlet in the county. Their remarkable efforts are made possible through group donations, acquisitions from food manufacturers, food retailers, the agricultural sector, numerous food drives, the USDA and generous individual financial contributions. The San Diego Food Bank seeks to provide “protein-rich foods, fresh produce, and dry staple foods with a long shelf life such as legumes, oatmeal and rice. The Food Bank operates with about 28,000 volunteers annually who sort and distribute food to those in need. The acquisition, storage, organization and distribution functions through over 300 nonprofit partner organizations including soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless and residential shelters, low-income day care centers, youth programs and day care centers in 183 distribution sites. www.sandiegofoodbank.org

SUPPORT THE ENLISTED PROJECT

MAKE-A-WISH SAN DIEGO COUNTY A child with a life-threatening medical condition can summon untold strength and courage when inspired. And sometimes it can make all the difference in battling their condition. Why? It is scientifically proven that boosting the human spirit can boost the body’s ability to fight diseases. Even in the event of a terminal illness, bringing joy to a child is a gift they and family members treasure forever. These are the guiding principles behind the Make-A-Wish program. Donated resources from individuals, fundraisers, and contributions from other entities provide the raw ingredients fueling love and compassion for these children’s wishes. Wishes are as wide-ranging and unique as the children themselves. Wishes include hot air balloon rides, childhood celebrity visits, themed parties for a child’s family and friends to a trip to the Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C. Truly, the list is endless and each essential. Wish requests go through a four-step process that determines their ability to be granted. To affect a child’s life, there is ample opportunity to support the work MakeA-Wish San Diego provides to the most medically vulnerable. One time and ongoing donations are indispensable, as are the volunteers who help make wishes come true. Please consider do-

SAN DIEGO CENTER FOR THE BLIND Operating for nearly 50 years, The San Diego Center for the Blind (SDCB) facilitates restorative vision when possible and offers living strategies for those who have lost their sight or are losing it due to accident or degenerative disease. The goal is to gain and/or preserve independence. With training, technology, social and psychological tools, the center has helped thousands of individuals stay in their own homes and lead healthy, satisfying lives. Diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, stroke and diabetic retinopathy are the leading cause of vision impairment and/or adult blindness that SDCB addresses providing free training and transportation services. Programs include magnifiers, special lighting, accessible computer hardware and software and more. Staff teach independent living skills and mobility strategies such as white cane use. They also provide counseling through vision loss stages for a satisfying adjustment. Donate one time gifts, make recurring donations, planned giving, and/or volunteer. In fact, vision-impaired volunteers comprise nearly half of the staff modeling successful independent living themselves. www.sdcb.org

Support the Enlisted Project, STEP for short, has been helping military families in Southern California for decades. Their mission consists of helping junior active duty enlisted members, families, and veterans achieve financial stability and sufficiency. With the largest global military population of 91,000 right here in San Diego County, these military families are in the lower six pay grades, with 55,000 considered low-income by HUD standards. When or if financial crises arise, STEP provides much needed resources to pay for critical expenses. Approximately 37,000 rely on food assistance. Financial counseling is also provided by STEP, an essential tool that helps families adjust to the high cost of living in San Diego. Education and grants for active duty families and veterans honorably discharged in the last 18 months also qualify for support. STEP draws on a rich network of donors, receives contributions from individuals, as well as community groups. Fundraising events, personal donations and in-kind contributions provide operational, grant and educational services for all branches of the military. www.stepsocal.org

COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL Just like the song, compassion is “more than a feeling.” It is an act of understanding that reaches out to help suffering children around the world. Compassion International has been acting from a place of compassion for decades, matching children in third world countries and situations with donors willing to help. As a child-advocacy ministry, the organization offers hope to children living in poverty by providing healthy meals and education, saving one child at a time through fundamental resources necessary for survival. Compassionate individuals sponsor a child on a monthly basis with a specified amount and establish a long distance relationship in the process. They make a caring emotional connection through mail and correspondence. In this way, hope is provided in equal or greater amounts than money itself, though both are needed. For additional information on how to help a child survive poverty, please visit www.compassion.com

DIAN FOSSEY GORILLA FUND INTERNATIONAL With decades of research on gorillas and “friendships” made with some of them, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International continues the work Fossey began decades ago. With teams of staff and volunteers in the field, a four-pronged approach focuses on learning from and providing for these animals, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Daily protection of the mountain gorillas is first and foremost. The mountain gorillas are the only endangered primate population that have grown due to the fund’s critical work. Second is scientific research, with their greatest accomplishment to date centered at the Karisoke Research Center in Africa. The third focus is working with local educational groups and partnerships to empower the next generation of conservationists. And lastly, the fund works with and vitalizes the nearby human community, believing they are fundamental to not only mountain gorilla survival, but also their own, with a motto of “Helping People. Saving Gorillas.” For additional information on how to contribute this holiday season, please visit www.gorillafund.org

DRUG POLICY ALLIANCE The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) works to promote a just society “in which the use and regulation of drugs are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights,” recognizing that the sovereignty of people over mind and bodies is an inalienable right people possess. Comprised of a broad coalition of supporters, from individuals to former professionals within law enforcement, legal communities, medical constituents and others, DPA seeks to eliminate disproportionate harm to young people and people of color. They also see the failed policies of the War on Drugs as adding to criminal risk within the U.S. instead of reducing it. The DPA focuses on reducing criminalization of drug policy, promoting responsible and equitable legal regulation of marijuana as harm reduction, providing new tax revenues, promoting health-centered drug policies, and empowering youth, parents and edu-

cators with fact-based drug education over fear-based messaging. Visionaries such as investor-philanthropist George Soros, Brown University’s alcohol and addiction specialist Dr. David Lewis, former attorney-general Nicholas Katzenbach, former Federal Reserve Chair Paul Volcker, former Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, Richard Branson, Vaclav Havel, Sting and numerous others promote equity and safety through DPA efforts. For additional information, please visit www.drugpolicy.org

SIERRA CLUB The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 by the renowned conservationist John Muir who felt it was essential to preserve and protect the environment not just for the “current” generation but for generations that follow. The Club’s goal is to “practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources.” An integral element to carry on this overarching mission includes educating and enlisting humanity for the lawful protection and restoration of the natural, as well as human environment. Muir felt all men and women can become vanguards of this effort by exposure to the earth’s beauty through exploring, enjoying and protecting wild places. The largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, three million members and supporters strong, Sierra Club has helped protect

millions of wilderness acres through the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and others. The Club has also been proactive in advocating moving away from fossil fuel consumption towards cleaner energy systems. For additional information about Sierra Club, please visit www.sierraclub.org

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS “We are doctors without borders...We help people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care.” So states the mission of men and women, doctors, nurses and other support specialists that can be found in some of the most dangerous parts of the world. They provide essential medical care to keep people alive and/or to perform procedures some people would not otherwise receive. Individual and group support provides most of the funding for this life-saving organization. In fact, 89 cents of every dollar supports the organization’s programs, an effort that keeps administration and fundraising efforts to a minimum. Operating since the early 1970s, Doctors without Borders has saved thousands of lives, with millions served in countries all over the globe. Learn how you can contribute by visiting their website at www. doctorswithoutborders.org.
