ELAINE CUNNINGHAM Elaine Cunningham's expansive canvasses, employing a range of media from oil paint to charcoal and watercolour, have represented over a decade an original and bold voice in contemporary seascape. Her works forge a union between abstraction and representation, work carried out en plein air and studio work, and claim for themselves an emotional intensity both from the pervasive influence of Joan Eardley, but moreover from the constant influence of the sea itself. The paintings displayed for this collection are the last of this size and style before the artist has declared she will be striking forth into new ventures; they thus represent the stylistic culmination of many years' dedication and passion.

Elaine writes that:

I have lived most of my life near the sea. It is very close to my heart and a constant influence on my painting. My practice involved both plein air and studio work and I embrance an extensive range of materials and techniques including oil paint, charcoal and watercolour.

PETER KING Peter's work demonstrates a unique, and instantly recognisable style. He has been awarded 'The House for an Art Lover' prize for painting in 2010, and was featured in a Sunday Times Magazine article on contemporary British Landscape painting. Peter writes:

Colour and the tactile qualities of paint are essential to my style; the marks, free paint and textured shapes become the field, wood and sky of my favourite haunts - Kintyre, the Clyde Valley, and the vast panorama of land and sky dominated by Tinto Hill and the Scottish Borders.

DEBORAH PHILLIPS Deborah Phillips first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy aged just 14. After a successful career working with design and arts and crafts, she now focuses on painting landscapes in acrylic from her Dundee studio overlooking the Firth of Tay. Deborah says;

I enjoy all aspects of creating a painting, from going out into the stunning Scottish countryside to collect reference material, priming the board on which I will paint, squeezing paint from the tubes and watching it glisten on the palette,holding the wellused brushes, mixing the squelchy colour and applying it in swathes, varnishing, framing and then seeing the finished article on a gallery wall - every stage gives me a thrill.

(19) 'Furrows at Fordelhill Farm'

(16) 'Teal Moonrise'

(5) ‘Saints & Sinners', Acrylic on Canvas,

(15) 'Lilac Harvest Ben'

KEVIN CANTWELL Kevin graduated with first-class honours in Contemporary Art Practices as recently as 2014. We are delighted to exhibit his elaborate creations for the first time at ScotlandArt. The elaborate sculptures in front of you are not created from plans; Kevin begins with found, or waste, objects from the studio, and allows the design to evolve; the final vision is informed by the process of creation. This is all the more remarkable given the sheer amount of detail evident in these works, which is so great that it almost reminds one of a Peter Bruegel painting - the fantastical conceit of, say, 'The Tower of Babel' is brought vividly to life by the mechanical realism, the deep knowledge of the building procedures and the sheer proliferation of detail. Kevin, likewise, has a great knowledge of aviation, which informs the structure of his work the tiny moveable parts all fuse together into a whole which is as imaginatively bizarre as it is realistic. Kevin's work represents a fantasy masterfully brought to life, before your very eyes.
