The history of Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit Arkkitehdit Casagrande Oy was founded by Caterina Casagrande in 2005. Since then, the firm has grown from a onewoman business to a company of 14 employees. In the spring of 2020, the architectural firm expanded to include the company Suunnittelulinja Finland Oy as an inhouse engineering group, and, at the same time, changed its name to Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit. Today, the firm’s team of employees includes expertise in the fields of electrical design, structural engineering, planning, construction engineering, and architectural design.

Dear architecture enthusiast, If you, like we, love colourful, artistic, and uplifting exteriors combined with functional interiors, you have come to the right place. In this e-book, we wish to share with you the thoughts and values behind our distinct designs and their function in creating compact and comfortable homes. At Casagrande, we design for everyone − single parents, families, and institutions − and, as such, we aim for the resulting structure to reflect both the lives of its future inhabitants as well as its place in its surrounding community. To both, we want to add the touch of colour and inspiration, which largely distinguishes our structures from much of the surrounding architectural landscape of Finland. The orphanage in Turku is home to 18 children aged 13-18. It was constructed for the city of Turku and finished in 2011.

Expanding the indoor space outdoors

One of Casagrande’s tools to create a more spacious feeling in smaller flats is the inclusion of outdoor spaces in the overall aesthetic profile of housing blocks. In doing so, the firm works to create exterior features such as courtyards, facades, and surroundings that present themselves as a continuation of the interior. This feeling is emphasised through strategically placed openings and windows which visually connect residents to the outdoor area. Promoting the use of colours Many Finnish buildings are constructed in grey or white concrete. In contrast, Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit is known for its artistic exteriors and its use of materials with greater colour variety such as stone, wood, or brick. “I don’t understand the obsession we seem to have with white and grey houses,” Caterina says. “The Finnish sky is grey most of the year, so that just makes everything grey. In Denmark and Sweden, the houses have much stronger colours, and that’s what I’m trying to introduce in Finland.”

Building in wood The creation of wood structures is another of Caterina Casagrande’s passions. “We have had a couple of wood housing projects and the sensation is completely different,” she says. “There’s a sensation of softness and warmth, and the sound effect is great”.

Making more from less With rising square meter prices, Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit has made it its special cause to create small flats that have the functionality and feel of a family home. “My passion is to create small places that are cosy and give a sensation of security and a feeling of home,” says Caterina Casagrande. The results include two-bedroom flats as small as 46 m2; the flats come with all the normal comforts of a home but are, crucially, still affordable, also for single parents.

Always thinking in site-specific designs While the passion for functionality in small spaces, colours, and the conscious use of outdoor spaces define many of Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit’s projects, each individual design is rooted in the specific project and its location. Consequently, the starting point is always the site-specific conditions and the requirements of the client. “We build mostly in urban spaces, and always work to create a connection to the surroundings. When it comes to housing, Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit is Pohjapiirustukset at the forefront of an urban trend that 1:100 considers exterior aesthetics as integral to the functionality of a building. Two years ago, the firm’s work in ARK 198-501 this area earned it an invitation to exhibit a project at the Venice International Art Fair. The project is still ongoing, but when finished, it will be presented at the art fair as part of an exhibition on future landscapes. According to Caterina Casagrande, founder and managing director of Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit, this is very fitting as the ability to add something to the landscape and the community is exactly what will ensure architecture’s place and function in the future. “In the future, more and more people will be living in the city in housing blocks, but inside the still larger urban entities, you will need to create defined spaces; interesting places that will integrate individual housing blocks into the city and attract people outside.” Kaupunginosa/kylä

Some of the measures Casagrande Oy Arkkitehdit Insinöörit uses to create uplifting and inviting outdoor spaces are artistic and colourful facades as well as a conscious choice of building materials. This may include the use of stone, brick or wood as cladding or building material. “Finland is a concrete country; we have a small building industry, and everyone seems to love building in concrete, explains Caterina and adds: “But wood is such a wonderful material. It adds warmth and texture to both the inside and outside of a building.
