Hi kids! My name is Abby. I’m the new editor of Just for Kids! It’s nice to meet you. I’m excited to share all my favourite Bible stories with you, such as David and Goliath, Paul and the shipwreck, and Jesus at the temple. This Sunday is Mother’s Day. We celebrate all the moms, grandmas and mother figures who love and care for us. On Mother’s Day, thank your mom for all the things she does for you, such as cooking dinner, tucking you into bed and giving good advice. How will you thank your mom? There are a lot of wonderful moms in the Bible. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about Elizabeth who prayed for a son and God answered her prayer.

Don’t interrupt while she watches it. 4. Make her a cup of tea or hot chocolate and serve it in her favourite mug. 5. Do a chore, such as putting away your toys and clothes (before she asks).

The Story of Elizabeth

E

lizabeth and Zechariah loved God and prayed to Him faithfully. They wanted a family, but they were sad because Elizabeth could not have a child. As they grew older, they worried that they might never have a child. Zechariah was a priest in God’s temple. One day, an angel of the Lord appeared to him at the temple. The angel said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, will have a child. It will be a boy and you must call him John. He will be very important.”

in the eyes of the Lord. But Zechariah doubted. “How can this be?” he asked the angel. “I am old, and so is Elizabeth.” “I was sent by God to tell you this. But since you did not believe my words, you will not be able to speak until after John is born,” the angel told him.

The angel then told Zechariah that people would rejoice at the birth of his son because he would be great

Elizabeth became pregnant, as the angel had promised. “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “He has been kind to me.” When the baby was born, they named him John. Zechariah could speak again, and he praised God. Their son grew up to be John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus to come.

The Great Commission

Hi kids! At school, we learn a lot of important subjects such as math, science and history. When I was in school, my favourite class was language. I loved reading books and telling stories. I still do! School is an important place for us to learn lessons from our teachers. Did you know that Jesus was a teacher? He taught His disciples about God and all the amazing things He can do. When Jesus died for us, He came back to life and gave His disciples the best lesson of all: that God is always with them.

fter Jesus had been raised from the dead, the 11 disciples went to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. There, they saw Him and worshipped Him, but some doubted. Jesus went to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go and tell people all over the world to believe in Me so they can become disciples, too. Baptize them and wipe their sins away in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded.”

Hi kids! If you’ve ever been on a roller-coaster before, you know how fast they move up and down. The cart zips along the track, up, up, up a hill, only to plummet back to the ground. Sometimes they even go upside down! Life is kind of like that, too. Some days are really fun and exciting, but other days are hard. Everybody has challenges that can feel like falling down the hill of a roller-coaster. As Christians, we know that God’s love can lift us up. When we face tough times and we feel low, we can trust in God to help us keep going. There are many stories in the Bible about people who endured through hard times. Jesus Himself faced obstacles. He died on the cross for us. But He kept going to fulfil God’s plan, because He loves us. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about Paul and Silas who kept loving God—even while stuck in prison!

Paul became so troubled that he turned to her and told the spirit to leave the girl alone in the name of Jesus Christ. The men who owned her were not happy with this. and singing songs to God, and the other prisoners listened. Suddenly, an earthquake erupted that shook the prison walls. The doors flew open and their chains came loose. When the guard woke up and saw what happened, he was terrified. He asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.” Paul and Silas told him about Jesus and the guard invited them to join his family for a meal. The guard was filled with joy because he was saved by God!
