One Last Prayer

Hi kids!

If you’ve ever ordered pizza with your family, you probably know how hard it can be to agree on an order. My vote is usually for Mediterranean, but my brothers always want meat lovers. How about you? Figuring out who gets to choose the pizza isn’t a big deal, as far as decisions go. It’s not like the decision Jesus faced in the garden of w Gethsemane many years ago. He kne to that doing what His Father wanted Him t what “Le , said He do would mean dying. Still, put He t.” You want be done, not what I wan can God’s will first, ahead of His own. How k? you put God first this wee

He took three of His disciples with Him. He said to them, “My soul is very sad. I feel close to death. Stay here. Keep watch with Me.” Then Jesus went a little farther by Himself. He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from Me. But let what You want be done, not what I want.” He prayed this prayer three times.

When Jesus came back to His disciples, He found them sleeping. “Are you still resting? Look! It’s time. The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. Get up! Here comes the one who will hand Me over to them.” While Jesus was speaking, Judas arrived. He was one of Jesus’ disciples. A large crowd was with him, carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests and leaders of the people had sent them. Judas had decided to betray Jesus. After he greeted Jesus, the men with him grabbed Jesus and arrested Him. Jesus spoke to the crowd. “Am I leading an army against you?” He asked. “Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture Me? Every day I sat in the temple courtyard teaching. And you didn’t arrest Me. But all this has happened so that the words of the prophets would come true.”

hen Jesus was here on earth, He did many wonderful things. He healed peo ple who were sick. He gave food to peo ple who were hungry. And He taught people to love each other, as He loved them. Jes us always put others first. But not everyone loved Jesus. Some of the leaders in Israel, where Jesus lived, had Him killed. His body was laid in a tomb and a big stone was rolled in front of it, so no one could get in. When Jesus had been there for thre e days, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. The stone had been moved and the bod y of Jesus was gone! Mary was very upset. She was at the tomb crying when a man appeared to her. He ask ed her, “Why are you crying?” Mary thought the man was a garden er, so she asked, “Where did you put the man who was in this tomb? Tell me and I will go and get Him.” The man Mary saw was not a garden er—it was Jesus! He said to her, “Mary,” and she recogn ized Him. Jesus said to her, “Go tell My disciple s that I am alive.” And Mary ran to the disciples with the news.

Hi kids! On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. It’s a great time for us to thank God for the wonderful world He created and focus on what we can do to protect the planet. The Bible says: “The earth belongs to the Lord. And so does everything in it” (1 Corinthians 10:26). After God created the world, He put human beings in charge of taking care of it. He said, “Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of earth” (Genesis 1:28 The Message). That’s an important responsibility! What can you do to look after the earth? You’ll find some tips in this issue of Just for Kids.

Hi kids!

On the Road to Emmaus

Earlier this month, we celebrated Easter, when Jesus rose from the dead after dying on the cross. After Jesus came back to life, two of His followers were walking to a town called Emmaus. They were talking about Jesus and trying to make sense of what had happened. That’s when Jesus suddenly appeared to them. He reminded them of what God’s messengers, the prophets, had written about Him. The men were amazed to hear that what happened to Jesus was all part of God’s plan.

Amazing Volunteers! Volunteering is one way that we can help others. Every year, The Salvation Army holds a big fundraiser at Christmastime called the kettle campaign. The money collected supports Army programs like food banks and after-school clubs for kids. This past year, the Army’s Cedarbrae Community Church in Toronto had a kettle campaign volunteering competition for young people. Three kids were awarded prizes. Together, they volunteered close to 200 hours. Wow! Here are the winners: from left, Athisaya, Dorien and Ray’el. Way to go!
