Gary King Good afternoon everybody and welcome to our opponents today AFC Totton. Christmas is nearly upon us and I would like to take this chance to wish you all a happy one. It will be a great start to Christmas today if we can get three points at home and sign off on 19 points both above Bedford and also within touching distance of Chippenham and Frome.
That said, it’s important we don’t look too far ahead and just take every game as it comes. It’s important we set ourselves up to compete from the first whistle to the last in every game and as this league keeps reminding us everyone can beat everyone on any given day. I do believe we have become harder to score against over the last few weeks and it is this mentality that will ensure we pick up our fair share

Again, this week with no midweek game we have had Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for this afternoon’s game against AFC Totton who, like us, will feel three points today will give them belief that they can go on and climb the table. For us to underestimate them would be foolish and we will need to be at our best today if we are all to come away smiling. Earlier this week I went to watch Arlesey Town V Hungerford in preparation for our New Year’s day fixture here against Arlesey (fail to prepare, prepare to fail). This game will have added spice in as much that
Zema, Nathan and myself spent five years at Arlesey and know everybody involved there very well. They will be hell bent on coming here and ruining our New Year’s day so we look forward to your support in ensuring that will not be the case. Our short term target now is to come through the Christmas and New Year period ensuring we stay out of the relegation zone. Next up after today’s game is a tough away fixture on Boxing Day against Cambridge City who now ground share with Histon followed by the visit of Stourbridge; two very tough fixtures against seasoned teams in this division which highlight the importance of three points here today, three points which would set us up nicely moving into these two games.

Whilst we were all disappointed coming away from Burnham last Saturday in a game that could have gone either way I reminded myself of the bigger picture and consoled myself with the fact we have climbed out of the relegation zone in a very short space of time. In truth a timescale that is ahead of what I had originally anticipated.

For only the third time this season St Neots recorded a run of three unbeaten matches with this home draw with Holbeach. The visitors have an excellent record at Rowley Park having not lost at that venue since 2000 and in the final analysis a draw was a fair result with both sides looking happy to wind down for the festive season. In a rather moribund first half the goalkeepers were never really tested with a 35 yards shot from Jon Hoggett the nearest thing to a goal attempt. Much of the play was in midfield and although Holbeach had the better of possession they created little mainly because St Neots had opted to play Gary Walker as a lone striker. However after the break there was a change in tactics from St Neots as Steve Kuhne pushed forward to his more accustomed position alongside Walker and this resulted in a more open game. Visiting keeper Kevin Cross raised the home hopes when he lost a cross from Danny Griggs but with the St Neots players slow to react he dived to reclaim the ball. Then after 52 minutes a corner from Russell Lawes was only cleared as far as the edge of the area where Jon Hoggett fired in a low shot. Nicky Hurst challenged the keeper who misjudged the flight of the ball and it went straight in to the net to give Hoggett his second goal in three matches.
The lead lasted just ten minutes and then Cameron Clark caught out of position attempted to retrieve the ball but only brought down Tom Fielding and a penalty was awarded. Steve Young was unable to reproduce his weekend heroics as Matt Warfield sent him the wrong way to level the scores. Three minutes later Holbeach could have snatched a winner as their player/manager Shaun Keeble best the offside trap to go clear but he dragged his shot wide of the far post. St Neots best chances came from set pieces with Nicky Hurst bringing two saved from Cross from corners floated in by Russell Lawes. At the other end Damian Matthews robbed substitute Steve Barnes after he had drifted in behind the defence and both sides seemed pleased with a share of the spoils. Trophy holders St Neots won their way through to their fourth Hunts Senior Cup Final in the past five years with a routine victory over neighbours Huntingdon in a repeat of last season’s Final which had gone to penalty kicks. Huntingdon who had led at the break will feel hard done by having seen two ‘goals’ ruled out in an eight minutes spell early in the second half but they finished tired and dispirited as St Neots’ clinical second half finishing saw them through.St Neots Manager Gary King determined that this was a chance to give his squad players some time on the pitch making six changes from the side that had beaten Frome the previous Saturday and he will have been delighted with both the performance and result although it did take his side some time to get going. Teenager Kaine Felix made only his second senior start for the side and scored twice and might have claimed a hat trick but for a wild off target finish just before the final whistle and popular midfielder Adrian Sear missing for the last ten matches through injury made a half hour substitute appearance after the break. There was a quiet start with Pat Bexfield sending Huntingdon’s first chance over the bar and at the other end both Lewis Hilliard and skipper Gavin Hoyte saw efforts from set pieces blocked by defenders. Felix
made an impressive start going past his marker with ease and two of his crosses were headed wide of target by Lewis Wilson. There was shock for St Neots after 18 minutes when well placed Referee Neil Hair judged Alasan Ann to have fouled Niks Savalnieks and awarded a penalty neatly tucked away by former Saint Declan Rogers to put the visitors in front. St Neots response was not very positive although Hilliard might have been given a penalty at the other end and Ben Ford twice tested Tim Trebes from distance. Making his first St Neots start Simon Thomas will have been disappointed to fluff a free headed chance from a Hilliard cross but Huntingdon also spurned chances – one either side of the break. Seymour-Shove was left unmarked atr the far post on the stroke of half time but sliced his shot wide and then making some amends Seymour-Shove picked out the unmarked Jacob Joyce at the far post but he headed weakly wide.
then got the ball in the net but was clearly offside but Huntington felt hard done by when they got the ball in the net again on the hour but the effort was disallowed because of a foul on the St Neots keeper. Then after 65 minutes a cross by Mark Duckett to the far post was not cleared and the speedy Felix cut in from the right to beat Trebes with a low angled shot to put St Neots in front. At that point visiting heads seemed to drop and St Neots with three substitutes on began to run the game. After 78 minutes from the third of three quick corners Felix rose above the defence to head in a Ford cross as the Huntingdon defence appeared to be concentrating on the taller St Neots attacking players and four minutes later substitute Jake Woolley picked up the ball in his own half and went around the only Huntingdon defender to finally clinch the victory with a clinical finish. St Neots now meet St Ives in the May Cup Final.
The second half saw St Neots dominant after that early let off and just four minutes in Simon Thomas took advantage of shoddy defending to level the scores. Rogers

The first half was largely a scrappy affair with neither side producing the form that they are capable of. Stringer was booked as early as the 11th minute when he tripped Ben Mucklin as the striker burst through. St Neots did create a couple of openings but Blake Rivers shot wide after good work by David Hartley and the lively Junior Muya saw his shot deflected for a corner. The visitors best first half chance came
from an Aaron Warrener corner that was headed wide by the unmarked Joshua Sanders. Eight minutes before the break Mucklin was played clear of a square lying St Neots defence but with time and space he saw his shot pushed away by the exposed Huff. Then with just two minutes to go before half time a Rivers corner found the head of Dom Poli and his well directed finish left visiting goalkeeper Aaron Dunmore helpless. Peterborough launched another attack from the kick off and in a repeat of the earlier incident it was Warrener who was played clear byu Mucklin but once again Huff kept his sides’ lead intact. The second half saw St Neots asleep as after 30 seconds Huff again performed heroics with Mucklin guilt of a second bad miss but it was the Stringer sending off that changed the pattern of the match. Peterborough levelled with the free kick superbly curled in by Marcelle Schiavone and this seemed to spur St Neots. With Muya pulled back to plug the defence they sent on Luke Day up front and he was unlucky not to restore the lead when his narrow angled shot was cleared off the line with Dunmore out of
position. Both side switched their approach with substitutes on but it was ten man St Neots who created the better openings with Day denied by a goalpost. A share of the points looked likely as the sides tired but with two minutes left a Rivers free kick was not cleared and the ball fell to Rukky Diejomaoh and he produced a stunning volley through the packed penalty are to win the match. However that had looked a highly unlikely outcome when after 57 minutes defender Kelton Stringer had committed a very careless challenge to earn a second yellow card leaving his side to complete just over half an hour with ten men. At that time St Neots led 1-0 and to compound Stringer’s misery from the resultant free kick the visitors scored an equalising goal. However the visitors never looked capable of making their numerical superiority count and St Neots scored a late winner to earn full points. They must be indebted to goalkeeper Dan Huff who before the sending off had produced three outstanding saves when faced with one on one situations that had looked certain to produce goals for the visitors.

Unlucky Not To Get A Deserved Share Of The Points Mike Green Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, for today’s Calor League Premier Division game
Well here we are, the last Saturday before the ‘Big Day’ and all those of you here reading this have done well to miss the madness of the final Christmas shopping. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and of course, the travelling supporters of AFC Totton and we trust you have an enjoyable, if brief stay with us before travelling home safely this evening. Let’s hope today’s game proves to be a real ‘Cracker’. Our last match here at the Cozy saw us progress to the final of the Huntingdonshire FA Senior Cup as we defeated near neighbours
Huntingdon Town in an entertaining Semi – Final which saw us run in four second half goals by Simon Thomas, Kaine Felix (2) and Jake Woolley after trailing at the break to a penalty scored by ex - Saint Declan Rogers. We can now look forward to hopefully winning some silverware in the final which will be held here, at The Cozy Stadium, on Friday May 2nd 2014, kicking off at 19:45. Saturday saw us make a rather eventful trip (I won’t go into detail but I’m sure those who travelled on the coach will fill you in if you ask them) down to Burnham FC and I personally feel the lads worked hard enough to have a deserved share
of the points. It certainly wasn’t a game for the football purists with conditions on the day sadly dictating that the ball wasn’t going to spend an awful lot of time on terra firma and our better chances to score were an early lofted effort from Ben Ford who grazed the top of the crossbar and right on the full time whistle, Simon Thomas was desperately unlucky to see his looping header cleared from under the crossbar by some desperate home defending. The home side stole all the points at a time when we had enjoyed a period of concerted pressure in their final third and the broke away to score from what was to be one of only a couple of on target efforts in the second half. Disappointing to have come away with nothing, yes, but certainly not all gloom and doom. Last Thursday saw our Under 18’s defeat previously undefeated Peterborough North Star here at the Cozy Stadium, beating our visitors 2-1. Saints went ahead when Dom Poli headed his team in front in the forty-third minute. Disaster struck around the hour mark as defender Kelton Stringer received a second yellow card and the favourites for the title equalised from the resultant free kick. The young Saints weren’t to be outdone though as Rukky Diejomaoh volleyed home an eighty-eighth minute winner from a partially cleared Rivers free kick to send the lads into wild scenes of celebrations. Right then, this just leaves me now to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I hope Santa brings you everything you have wished for. I look forward to seeing you all at Cambridge City on Boxing Day if you can make it or if not, definitely back here on Saturday 28th when we entertain Stourbridge. SEASONS GREETINGS ‘Greenie’

Champions League Final, Ataturk Stadium, Istanbul, May 25, 2005 Though only eight years ago, the “Wonder of Istanbul” has already entered football folklore. Liverpool’s astonishing turnaround from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 and then triumph in the penalty shoot-out ranks as the greatest comeback in the history of the game. Liverpool had gone into the match as underdogs, and Milan romped to a three-goal lead at half-time. Paolo Maldini put them into the lead after just 57 seconds, with Hernan Crespo adding two poacher’s goals. Reportedly, the Liverpool players could hear the Milan players whooping in celebration in their dressing room at half-time. But captain Steven Gerrard led the fightback, heading the first goal shortly after the restart. Manager Rafa Benitez had made a crucial change at halftime, bringing on midfielder Didi Hamann to shackle Milan playmaker Kaka, thus cutting off the supply to the strikers. The decline of the Brazilian’s influence, and that of fellow midfielder Andrea Pirlo, also allowed Gerrard and Xabi Alonso more licence to roam forward. Benitez was hailed afterwards as a tactical genius for his half-time
changes. Yet if, as many had expected, Hamann had started the game, Liverpool may not have given away three goals in the first place. Whether by accident or design, Liverpool’s changes worked, in what Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti called “six minutes of madness which I can’t explain”. A minute after Gerrard scored, Vladimir Smicer thundered a low shot through Dida’s hands. Five minutes later, quite remarkably, Liverpool were level. Xabi Alonso converted the rebound after Dida had stopped his penalty following Gennaro Gattuso’s trip on Gerrard. In contrast to Benitez, Ancelotti did not make a change until late on, instead leaving his team alone, flagging on ageing legs. But Gerrard admitted afterwards that Liverpool were also “running on empty” and playing for penalties during extra-time. They needed goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek to pull off a remarkable
double save from Andriy Shevchenko in the 117th minute. Dudek was to prove the hero again in the shoot-out, saving from Pirlo and Shevchenko to complete Liverpool’s astonishing turnaround. The following morning, as bleary-eyed Liverpool fans made their way home from Istanbul by plane, train and boat, it slowly dawned on them that they had witnessed the most extraordinary final in the history of the European Cup. David Beckham team and ignored by the coach. Beckham knew it was time to move on. But where he would go to, no one but he would now decide.
Full name: David Robert Joseph Beckham Date of birth: 02/05/1975 David Robert Joseph Beckham comes from a modest home in Leytonstone, near London. Son of Ted, a kitchen fitter and devoted Manchester United fan, as a boy David would visit Old Trafford and dream about putting on a red shirt himself. His dream came true on his 14th birthday when David joined the Man Utd Youth Team. David was one of a number of young boys showing huge potential at the time in the Man Utd youth division and the club manager Sir Alex Ferguson was a great believer in the system. This confidence prompted Ferguson to place some of the young rising stars into his first team selections. Beckham got his first chance in a League Cup game against Brighton and Hove Albion in 1992. He quickly impressed and his unbelievable accuracy with passing the ball made him a strong choice as first-team winger. He took Eric Cantona’s number 7 shirt made it his own. Beckham came along during the latter stages of Manchester United’s domination of English football during the nineties. He represented the best of their new wave of young home-grown players. In the years that followed his time with United, Beckham helped them to the treble in 1998/99 (which included the Champions League title) and he won the UEFA Club Player of the Year for his part that season. He notched up 62 goals for the United, many from set-pieces, as well as countless goal assists. Although he was already a legend with the Red Devils, there were slightly devious goings on happening off the pitch between the manager Ferguson and
Beckham. Much of this stemmed from the overwhelming celebrity status that Beckham was rapidly earning. Ferguson didn’t feel Becks’ wife Victoria was much help to his football. In a famous and rather petty incident with a flying boot in the changing room, it seemed clear that Beckham’s time with his beloved Manchester United would soon be up. Out of all the dozens of clubs willing to pay the earth for the remarkably talented Becks, Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid were the ones he wanted to join the most. With so many of the world’s best players in the team, who wouldn’t? Beckham joined Real Madrid in 2003 and would go on to play for them for four years, wearing the number 23 shirt and playing 113 games in total. He quickly became an idol for the club and on the day of his transfer the replica shirt bearing his name completely sold out. Partnering such talents as Figo, Raul, Ronaldo and Zidane didn’t make Becks at all shy. We at St Neots Town have enjoyed our little piece of success but before we got carried away have taken a step back and looked at how or when we can sustain future success. Well unless your income is more than your outgoings you cannot continue on that runaway train.
This I am sure will be achieved, there will be ups and downs as far as results are concerned because we are still in the process of building a more experienced team coupled with
Panic! Maybe, availability of players you can bring in! Most definitely. In reality what player would want to join a team who were 3rd from bottom of the league at a very awkward time of the season being November and December. Quality players just do not move at this time of the season unless it is to a club that is in the promotion race. Obviously Gary, Zema and Nathan have worked wonders on convincing players that this is the club to play for and that the future will bring us much success. Having spoken to the management team and our plans for next season I really do think we will all be very happy with our team from the very first match and that we will be in the mix as they say for promotion next season.
I like everyone else am disappointed at being where we are in the league and we have not had much to shout about, in saying that most teams never have much to shout about as there finances dictate that they are in for survival from day one. Our club has had more success over the last few years than in the whole history of the club and we have all enjoyed it myself included. So lets take one season at a time see where we are and look to where we want to be next season. I know where I want to be and providing that we are in budget then I see no reason why we will not be where we all want to be by the end of next season. The Banbury manager made a comment the other week after we defeated them “We should easily beat a team like St Neots Town” As Graham Taylor once said “Do I not like that” Next season I very much doubt if we will be looking up at most teams that’s for sure.

Of course many clubs have a wealthy benefactor, we are no different and we could take a chance and ride that train until the kindness of that benefactor says, “that’s enough, no more I have had enough and want to move onto something else”. Familiar story, of course it is. We at St Neots Town took the view that it would be much better to try and establish a sustainable business whilst keeping our status at step three of the nonleague football pyramid. This is what we are trying to do, unfortunately things do not always go according to plan and we do all make mistakes, ours was maybe one of too young too soon. And I take full responsibility for that. Thankfully we saw that very early on and still have half of the season to secure our place in this division for next season.

Totton like us have in recent years had some considerable success in winning leagues and cups. We have both had similar paths to success. However Totton have fallen on hard times as so many other clubs seem to do with what I might call “Instant Success”. Like many clubs it is a roller coaster ride and if not controlled it is a roller coaster ride into oblivion.

Welcome to our visitors this afternoon for our next engagement in the Calor Southern League Premier Division. They are the players, Directors and supporters of AFC Totton and we extend to them our usual warm Cozy Stadium welcome. Problems off the field this season have seen out visitors peer over the brink but now they seem to be recovering from a very dodgy start to their season. A massive turnover on the playing side has seen the side introduce a raft of younger players and ten days ago they recorded only their second home victory of the season as they defeated Chippenham 3-1. In the three major Cup competitions defeats to lower graded sides (Sholing in the
FA Cup, Clevedon Town in the FA Trophy and Wimborne Town in the Red Insure Cup) has compounded their problems but at least they can now concentrate on league survival. They were one of the few sides to record a league double over St Neots last season so this afternoon they will be looking to preserve that record. Our lads meantime are beginning to settle into a more consistent run of form and we trust that will continue with our tough looking festive season programme away at Cambridge City and at home to Stourbridge and Arlesey Town.

Club History Totton Football Club was formed in 1886 and became one of the founder members of the Hampshire FA. After the 1914/18 War they entered the Southampton Senior League and the New Forest League and in 1920/21 transferred to the Hampshire League West. Their early matches were played at South Testwood Park before they moved to their present home at Testwood Park in December 1933. In 1975 they amalgamated with Totton Athletic and installed

2006/07 proved to another memorable milestone for the club. The team led the Wessex League from October until the last week of the season when they were pipped to the title by a single point by Gosport. However there was more
In season 2006/07 Totton reached the Final of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the new Wembley Stadium for the first time in the Club’s history. Sadly in front of a record 36,232 crowd for a Vase Final we had to settle for Runners-up spot after a thoroughly entertaining and skilful match against Truro City, losing 3-1.
More success was to follow for in their first season at Step Four they reached the play off finals only to lose out at the last hurdle to Didcot Town in extra time. 2009/10 saw the club lift the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time but there was another play off disappointment but the following season Totton were crowned Champions of the Southern League South and West Division to earn Premier Division status for the first time. The 2011/12 season put further Cup icing on their historical cake as they reached the second Round Proper of the FA Cup and hosting Bristol Rovers in a live televised match. They also reached the play off finals again but were denied promotion to the Blue Square Bet Conference losing out to Oxford City who accompanied Brackley Town up to Step Two.

The Club also narrowly missed promotion to the Conference South, but lost 4-2 at Oxford City.in the play off final after only one season at Southern Premier League level.
The highlight of the 2011/12 season was AFC Totton reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. The match, televised live on ITV was against Bristol Rovers who unfortunitly coming out on top in convincing style that saw them go on to finish 3rd in the league.

floodlights on the ground 1980/81 brought the club’s most successful season in almost 100 years of history when they won the Hampshire League Division One for the first time and several cups the same season. Then in 1983 they reached the fifth round of the FA Vase losing away at Forest Green Rovers who were the trophy holders. Moving on to 2000/01 there was another good FA Vase run reaching the fourth round and a good FA Cup run the following season.

Who calls the shots?... Steve Riley Manager Steve took over the reins as AFC Totton manager prior to the start of the season 2012-2013. The popular Geordie has previous managerial experience at Bashley where he steered the club to the Southern League South & West division title in 2006/07 and into the Premier division play-offs just twelve months later. His playing career comprised spells at Fareham Town, Newport IOW, Fleet Town, and Bashley.
Chris Ferrett (Assistant Manager) Accompanied Steve Riley to the Testwood Stadium having been assistant manager at Bashley. He adds to the side when he takes the field, and Chris’ vast experience has been and will be very valuable to the up and coming youngsters in the Totton team. His previous clubs include AFC Bournemouth, Havant & Waterlooville, Salisbury City, Dorchester Town, and Bashley. Steve Hollick (Goalkeeper/ Goalkeeper coach) After playing in junior local league football, his senior career started at Bashley with current Manager Steve Riley. He joined Totton & Eling of the Sydenhams Wessex League, before arriving at AFC Totton in primarily a coaching role. Joe McCormack (Goalkeeper) A very experienced keeper, Joe joined the Stags in August 2013. His previous major clubs include
Salisbury City, Newport IOW and Gosport Borough, whilst he has had spells with Fareham Town, Winchester City, and Lymington & New Milton. On the island he played in addition for Cowes Sports, East Cowes Vics, Brading Town, W&B Sports and West Wight. Michael Bada (Defender) A lightning-quick and tenacious defender, Michael joined the Stags at the start of season 2013-2014. He progressed through Croydon Athletic Academy into their first team at 18 years old before joining Guildford City. Jack Dawkins (Defender) Central defender Dawkins came through the Totton U16 and U18 sides after starting his football career with Eastleigh in the Tyro League. He was also involved as a triallist with Southampton FC in a 4 month spell at U 16 level.
Dean Faithfull (Defender) Much-travelled Dean started his football career at Eastleigh at 16 years of age, and moved from there to Vospers (now Sholing). He then obtained a scholarship in the USA (Florida) where he spent four years before being recruited to play in Australia for Whitsunday Minors. He joined Totton from the Australian club at the start of season 2012-2013. Ryan Hill (Defender) Ryan is another player in his second spell with the Club. Following 49 appearances during the 2008/09 campaign, the free-kick specialist re-joined the Stags at the start of the 2011/12 season and has now regained his regular spot at right-back. His previous clubs include Millwall, Farnborough Town, Dorchester Town, Weymouth, and Bashley. Jacob Joseph (Defender) Jacob’s early football involvement saw him spend 7 years with Academy side Oxford Blackbirds, and then move on to the Oxford United Academy between 2010 and 2012. His best memories include winning a treble, scoring in a County Cup Final, and trialling at Southampton FC. Ellis White (Defender) Ellis is a towering defender, and another player who came up through the youth team and the PACE setup. He had limited experience of first team football in season 2012-2013.

WEIRD FOOTBALL STORIES
Harry Redknapp famously bristles at suggestions he is just a crafty cockney, a reputation largely stemming from his days as West Ham’s manager, when punts on the likes of Paolo Di Canio and Trevor Sinclair, and cut-price deals for John Hartson and Paul Kitson, were handsomely rewarded by some fine performances.
Storrie was telling the truth because the story had stemmed from a misunderstanding between a member of staff at West Ham and a journalist and snowballed from there. Strangest of all, the club employee, Bill Prosser, cleared the story up in a letter to the Fiver in 2005: “Here’s a stitch-up of a work colleague, albeit an accidental one. In the 90s I was the PA announcer at Upton Park. I also handled all of the club’s travel arrangements. You will remember that Marco Boogers famously went a bit doolally shortly after joining the club and was reported to be living in a caravan in Holland. Although this

The legend endures … I feel a bit responsible for his misfortune.” Boogers made only two more appearances for West Ham and, after suffering a knee injury, he returned to the Dutch league in February 1996. It is easy to laugh now but, as Redknapp admitted, West Ham did not handle the situation especially well. This was the start of English football’s foreign revolution and perhaps there was not enough care for foreign players, which has changed now. All of which still did not stop Redknapp from naming Boogers as his worst ever signing at West Ham. At least he kept Sandra out of it. Jacob Steinberg

Boogers arrived at West Ham in the summer of 1995 for £1m from Sparta Rotterdam, having built up a perfectly acceptable reputation in the Dutch league, but it would later emerge that Redknapp had never seen him play, instead relying on a video of the striker. That in itself is not so strange – Redknapp was hardly the first manager to rely on a tape – but it did him no favours when things took a turn for the worse. This being the days before Twitter, YouTube and European football experts, supporters had no idea what to expect and Boogers made his debut on the opening day of the season as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 home defeat by Leeds. He made little impact. But not to worry. He was in a foreign land. Plenty of time to make his name. As it turned out, his next appearance off the bench a few days later would be rather more eventful. West Ham were trailing Manchester United 2-1 when Boogers was thrown on with the minutes ticking away. He did not take long to make his mark – on Gary Neville, that is. Shortly after coming on, Boogers flew through the air and fulfilled many a Liverpool fan’s lifelong dream, taking Neville

The £18m received from Leeds for Rio Ferdinand was frittered away on no-hopers and Titi Camara. But none could match the oddity that was Marco Boogers’ brief but eventful spell in east London.

That should have been that but Boogers, affected by the media attention and suffering from homesickness, went back to Holland. Again, nothing remarkable about that. Foreign player visits own country shock! He was not the last West Ham player to do so, after all. In 1998 the Chile defender Javier Margas played three games in England before going awol for a year; he returned the following season and showed his commitment to the cause by dyeing his hair claret and blue. For Boogers, though, a simple trip home turned into one of the strangest stories in English football as it was reported that “Barmy Boogers”, as one paper put it, had gone to live on a caravan site in Holland. West Ham had signed a nutcase. A nutcase off a video tape. West Ham’s managing director, Peter Storrie, was forced to deny rumours that Boogers had been deemed “mentally unfit” to play in September 1995. “We had our meeting in the Hilton hotel at Amsterdam,” he said. “I didn’t see a caravan, or a tent for that matter. He is certainly not mentally unstable. It is absolute nonsense.”

Love Your Colours Ade Roberts For the supporter of any team, it’s difficult to imagine or even comprehend any drastic change at their club other than the managers and players coming and going. A change of grounds to a new venue is a real gut-wrencher as it feels like you’re leaving behind so much history and memories [not all good ones though]. The only thing that helps console a fan in the transition of ground changing is the hope that it’s the start of a ‘new era’, a fresh start and the possibility, which rarely transpires, of a sharp rise in the attendance figures as a consequence of the new ground and renewed optimism. The ground move is something we can just about stomach and come to terms with. The changing of our clubs’ colours and / or badge is another matter. Obviously, we can accept the change if it’s a celebratory or centenary kit, which, if we’re honest has seen some nasty kits over the years for some clubs! Everton fans in the past have been at the sharp end of such change when the club decided to the new club crest. The club eventually apologised to fans after it provoked uproar from the fans because aspects of their club crest had been removed, namely the Latin wording which translated as ‘nothing but the best is good enough’. This moved the fans to begin a petition against the changes and 22,000 fans signed it. The fans described the new crest as ‘awful’ and said they would refuse to buy merchandise bearing the ‘new’ crest which, ultimately, would cost the club fortune in lost revenue. Everton did apologise to the fans for not consulting them, however, if you look at the current crest, it remains Latin-less! Everton have changed their logo no less than 10 times during their existence. Obviously, we all like to see things updated and

More recently than the Everton saga is that of Fleet Spurs FC from Hampshire, who have been forced to change their ‘new’ badge. A letter had arrived at the club from the lawyers of Tottenham Hotspur. The letter described how the Fleet Spurs badge was too similar to the Tottenham Hotspur badge. Fleet Spurs FC of the Wessex League Division One said the action by Spurs was “heavy-handed” and went on to suggest that changing their badge again would cost them in excess of £3,000. Tottenham stressed that they had to protect the clubs identity, hence the reason why they asked [demanded] that Fleet Spurs remove the ‘Spurs cockerel’ from their new badge. The Fleet Spurs FC website has been adjusted accordingly but THFC have allowed Fleet Spurs to keep the new
design until it can be replaced – how generous of them eh? It was a fans’ competition that brought about the new design for Fleet Spurs but it now looks as though the winning entry will be defunct following the actions of Tottenham Hotspur. Our football clubs are steeped in history and as fans, we don’t embrace change too well, unless it’s replacing a poor performing manager or player. Well, we all want to see our team do well don’t we? If changes need to be made to enhance and improve performance, then these changes we can take on board and adapt to. As far as changes to our kit, ground, badge or even our colours, we are less likely to accept these. Today, we wear our colours with pride and look forward to a resounding victory! Ade

THE early rounds of the FA Trophy proper are never an easy sell; not for fans who contemplate Christmas shopping, managers who play weakened sides and nor for reporters, I have to confess.
So what about my headline? Step forward Craig McAllister, another veteran of the Non-League and lower Football League circuit, now back with his first club after serving the likes of Basingstoke – where I first came up against him as

Manager Richard Hill told me that he and eight of the players who’d had furthest to travel spent the Friday night in a Stansted hotel. “I offered to drive Macca back to Southampton in the early hours, but he wanted to stay
and play,” said Hill. McAllister, whose fiancée Linzi is the daughter of former Tiverton Town manager, and current Taunton assistant, Martyn Rogers, explained further. “I can’t wait to get back and see the little man,” he said. “It’s a proud day but I had a job to do here, and having been around football all her life, Linzi understands. Hopefully she still will when I go to watch Tottenham-Man United with her old man tomorrow!” I’m not sure my wife would have let me get away with it when our two were due. But at a time of year when we celebrate birth, I was doing a jig of joy at little Charlie McAllister’s arrival. ‘Classy Craig Is The Daddy’ was the headline gift-wrapped for me by his dad’s devotion…to the beautiful game and the FA Trophy first round!

Premier Division Weekend Action Leaders Hemel Hempstead Town took the lead on the stroke of half time and secured a comfortable 3-0 win at Chippenham Town with two second half goals and second placed Chesham United scored three times in the opening twenty minutes on the way to a comprehensive 4-1 victory at Frome Town while Cambridge City, two ahead after fourteen minutes, scored five in the second half to complete a 7-1 home rout of bottom of the table Bashley but Poole Town needed a goal in the final minute to move into fourth with a 2-1 home win over Redditch United. Banbury United were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Weymouth and Stourbridge missed the chance of going above them when a goal in each half gave Arlesey Town a 2-0 away victory but Hitchin Town made it six successive wins when a first half strike gave them a 1-0 home victory against Biggleswade Town. Burnham scored ten minutes from time to secure a 1-0 home win over St Neots Town while Truro City were held 0-0 at home by Corby Town.
Premier Division Midweek Action On Monday, Redditch United took the lead shortly after the break but conceded a penalty three minutes later before scoring twice, including a penalty, in the final five minutes to win 3-1 against Bideford, who finished the game with eight men and lost their unbeaten away record,
while St Albans City moved up to sixth place when a second minute penalty, which resulted in the visitors being reduced to ten men, and a goal in the first minute of the second half gave them a 2-0 home win over bottom of the table Bashley. On Tuesday, Hemel Hempstead Town went ahead from a penalty five minutes before the break and added two more goals in the second half to move four points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 home win over Burnham and Stourbridge, having failed to score in their last two games, raced into a four goal half time lead on the way to their second 7-0 home win inside three weeks with Frome Town this time the victims while Arlesey Town struck three times in the opening half hour and, after adding a fourth in the first minute of the second half, went on to complete a 5-2 home victory over Hungerford Town. On Wednesday, third placed Cambridge City scored twice in the opening half hour but needed a penalty in the final minute to win 3-2 after visiting Hitchin Town had fought back to be level just after the midway point of the second half while Corby Town, behind after sixteen minutes, scored twice in two minutes but were pegged back level from a penalty on the half hour mark before going on to record a 4-2 home win over Banbury United with two second half strikes
Division One Central Weekend Action Leaders Dunstable Town scored twice in the opening half hour and wrapped up a 3-0 win at Uxbridge with a goal twelve minutes from time and second placed Rugby Town, a goal up at the break, scored from the spot five minutes from time to record a 2-0 home win against AFC Hayes but third in the table Barton Rovers, two behind at the interval, slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Northwood while Slough Town held on to fourth position when they scored four goals in the final twenty minutes to win 4-0 at second from bottom Chertsey Town. Kettering Town scored a penalty after an hour to give them a 1-0 home victory over North Greenford United and move into fifth place replacing Daventry Town who, after taking a fourteenth minute lead, were held to a 1-1 draw at Chalfont St Peter while Aylesbury United won 2-1 at bottom of the table Ashford Town (Middx) and Egham Town were held to a 0-0 draw at Leighton Town.
FA Trophy 2nd Round Weekend Action tHungerford Town booked a place in the last sixteen when a goal ten minutes from time gave them a 1-0 victory at Northern Premier League Leek Town but St Albans City, a goal down to Cambridge United at the break, equalised from the spot just after the hour mark but suffered the heartbreak of a 2-1 home defeat when the Conference leaders cruelly struck in the third minute of time added on.

Hemel Hempstead Town HEMEL STRENGTHEN SQUAD Hemel Hempstead Town may be leading the Calor League Southern Premier Division, but it hasn`t stopped manager Dean Brennan from tinkering with his squad. There have been several comings and goings at Vauxhall Road in the past few days. Luke Allen joined on loan from league rivals Cambridge United at the end of November, while both James Folkes and Tom Berwick signed permanent deals with the Tudors and both made their debuts on Saturday against Truro City in Hemel’s ninth consecutive home league win.

Poole Town POOLE INSIST THEY`LL BE READY Vice-chairman Chris Reeves insisted Calor League Southern Premier Division club Poole Town would meet their ground grading deadline after an initial inspection had thrown up “no surprises”. The list of work to achieve the ground grading includes provision for extra covered seating, an additional turnstile, more toilets for supporters, an upgrade of social facilities and permanent hard standing (concrete walkway) around all open areas of the ground. In line with standard regulations, Poole have until March 31st next year to complete the work with noncompliant clubs risking relegation irrespective of league position.

Goalkeeper Dean Snedker has joined Calor League Southern Premier Division club Banbury United on a month’s loan from Sky Bet League Two side Northampton Town. He will go into the squad after Leigh Bedwell returned to League One Swindon Town on completion of his maximum allowed loan period. Nineteen-year-old Snedker has come through the Northampton Town youth system, making his first-team debut in a Capital One Cup game in August 2012 in a 2-1 home win over Cardiff City. He is on contract with the Cobblers until 2015.

Manager Brendon King and his assistant Matt Groves have been relieved of their duties at Calor League Southern Premier Division club Weymouth following the recent run of poor results. Experienced goalkeeper Jason Matthews will become caretaker-manager and will be assisted by Micky Greeno, Jake Richmond, Paul Maitland and Rex Buttle for Saturday’s fixture with Banbury United. Weymouth will advertise for a new manager and - with Matthews agreeing to a short-term arrangement - will take advantage of the time to ensure that the right person is appointed to the manager’s seat.
