Oh What A Night! Gary King Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to everybody from Bashley FC.
So silverware has been delivered, and our southern league status is secured. Credit to every player involved! Our aims now are to deliver our highest points tally ever at this level and win the Hunts Cup final. Zema, myself and Nathe went to BBC Radio Cambs on Tuesday with the cup, and we had a good laugh. I was sitting between them when the presenter asked us in turn which
this level inside out and if St Neots is to meet its potential then that’s what’s important right now. I’ve seen so many times over the years ‘ex pros’ takeover at non league clubs and simply not know the level, indeed an ex pro has taken over at our old club Arlesey whom we play on Monday, it may or may not be the answer to their prayers? Rest assured Ze, myself and Nathe are up for this and between us we have a pretty good track record, delivering for you guys is our focus, Come on you Saints

We didn’t have to wait too long to see this type of football once more, on Saturday at Weymouth our winner in the second half was a fifteen pass move finished in style by Shane, fantastic to watch and in truth it was worth travelling to Weymouth if just to see that goal.
managers we thought were the best, (Jose Mourinho immediately popped into my mind) well of course after listening to Ze and Nathe reel off a couple of managers including Nigel Worthington whom they had played for in their professional careers, I was embarrassed to say Jose Mourinho, so I mumbled some other nonsense. In truth with more time to consider my answer what I would liked to have said was, my opinion is that the best management team I have seen or worked with Is the St Neots managment team Gary, Ze and Nathe (I know I’m a boaster) seriously though I think we know

Well todays’ notes are easy to write on the back of winning the league cup in front of a fantastic crowd as well as Saturdays victory away to Weymouth. The cup final was a tense affair but over the two legs I feel even Tiverton would have no quarrels regarding the eventual outcome. On the night I felt we deserved two or three more and their keeper kept them in the game as he did in the first leg. To be fare they suffered the loss well and were very sporting in what was a rare defeat for them, we had one passage of play in the first half where we strung together twenty nine passes that lead to a Lewis Hilliard shot that just went wide. I thought to myself at this point that the team really has evolved now and the fact that we are capable of playing football like this in a cup final was a signal of what we are capable of and of things to come.

St Neots clinched the Central Division league title in their first season at Step Four with a non stop scintillating display of football to thrash luckless North Greenford 8-0 scoring four times in each half. It took their tally of league goals to 113 in just 41 matches and they can look forward next season to life at Step Three in the Premier Division of the Southern League. It is an outstanding achievement for a side that three seasons ago finished 17th at Step Five in the UCL and is a fitting tribute to the focussed ambition of Manager Dennis Greene and Chairman Mike Kearns and of course the squad of players who have worked so hard for each other throughout the season. In front of a crowd of 817 – the highest in the Southern League on the day St Neots were irresistible against a side who had gone very close to beating them in their first meeting back in October when St Neots scraped a 2-2 draw with a late equaliser. The match got off to the explosive start that was needed to calm any pre-match nerves for within four minutes St Neots were 2-0 up and looking certain winners before any latecomers had reached their seats. After less than ninety seconds a delightful Ben Mackey through ball played Stefan Moore clear of the offside trap and he cleverly let visiting keeper Andy Caesar commit himself before slotting the ball past him and before the excitement subsided Rene Steer marauded down the left to set up Dan Jacob who stepped inside his marker to score with a scorching left foot drive.
It would have been three in six minutes but for a magnificent tumbling save by Caesar to deny Moore but St Neots carried on their domination with Chris Hope heading just wide from a Jacob corner and Mackey shaved the crossbar with a volley. Greenford looked mesmerised and after 28 minutes Steer crossed to the far post to pick out Moore who unselfishly squared for Ben Mackey to make it 3-0. Six minutes later it really was all over as a contest when Lewis Hilliard and Lewis Hilliard combined on the right and the cross was netted by Ben Mackey. Greenford’s first direct shot came from Zac Joseph but was too high and at the end of the half both Mackey and Hilliard went close to extending the lead. Six minutes into the second half another silky move ripped the visiting defence apart as Jacob and Hilliard combined to set up Stefan Moore for goal number five and two minutes later the irrepressible Jacob crossed for Ben Mackey to complete his hat trick. At 6-0 St Neots Manager Dennis Greene decided to rest his star strikers and give some experience to the youngsters on the bench and how well they responded. After Greenford tried hard to make their mark with efforts from substitute Ricky Pither and Alex Paine the St Neots substitutes ran the rest of the show as Aaron Greene sent Dan Jacob clear and he rounded the keeper to make it 7-0 after 78 minutes and four minutes the same player deservedly notched his first hat trick of the season after collecting a

In just their second season at Step Three St Neots won their highest ever cup honour – the Red Insure Trophy – the League Cup of the Southern League. Two outstanding moments defined this tie – the match winning goal by Lewis Hilliard who registered the outstanding distinction of having scored in every round of the competition and a magnificent instinctive full length save from Nathan Abbey that ensured the trophy for his side. The first half was at times embarrassingly one way with Tiverton managing just two direct shots on goal whilst St Neots played the ball around patiently and had little trouble in creating chances for themselves. With Jay Davies and man of the match Lewis Hilliard running the midfield and back after suspension Ben Farrell mopping up most of the half hearted Tiverton attacks it seemed certain that goals would come but the visitors defended effectively and with goalkeeper Michal Searle looking inspired the voluble home fans were frustrated. Hilliard was at the centre of everything for St Neots sending first minute free kick over the bar, sending an angled shot just beyond the far post and sending a second free kick into the side netting in the first 15 minutes. Tiverton’s first real effort was a cross from Ed Palmer diverted over his own cross bar by a St Neots defender. The visitors’

physical approach earned two of their defenders early cautions and after 31 minutes Davies got up to head down a Hilliard cross to Adjei whose fierce volley brought an outstanding save from Searle. In a rare Tiverton attack Palmer curled a shot wide of goal and as half time approached both Gavin Hoyte and Tolley had efforts just off target. After 42 minutes the visitors were lucky not to concede when Palmer sliced a Hilliard cross into the arms of his surprised goal keeper but a minute later the best move of the first half produced the goal. Farrell dispossessed an opponent and ran at the defence picking out Shane Tolley and his delightful flick freed Hilliard whose low shot beat the keeper. That single goal should have boosted St Neots but it was Tiverton who started the second half the stronger. Shane Krac shot over the bar when well placed and
Nolan was brought down when going clear another caution for Palmer and then Dan Smith ran at the St Neots defence unchallenged but shot over the bar. St Neots domination was now broken but they still looked defensively sound and substitutions by both sides did little for the game other than to give Tiverton and more attacking profile. With 17 minutes left a Nolan flick on found Tolley and driven wide he left the ball for substitute Jake Woolley whose shot found the side netting and six minutes later a snap shot by Martin through a packed defence brought the brilliant save from Abbey. Had that counted St Neots would have been left with just eleven minutes to find a match wining goal but after the let off they finished strongly with Farrell releasing Davies whose shot was a foot too high and Nolan beating the offside trap but losing control when he should have made the game safe. Four minutes added time with Tiverton desperate for a goal me4ant a nervy finish but St Neots deserved their victory celebrated with their ecstatic fans.

From the start St Neots settled into what looked like a winning rhythm. They dominated the early play with Weymouth struggling to get out of their own half. After just three minutes a Lewis Hilliard shot was pushed away by home keeper Jason Matthews and Matt Nolan was first to react forcing the goalkeeper to make a great block at his feet from a narrow angle. Lorenzo Ferrari then glided past two defenders to cross from the bye line and the ball only needed a touch in front of a gaping net and then full back Mason Spence joined the attack to see his 25 yards shot well gathered by the busy Matthews.
The home side was being restricted to shooting from distance and both George Rigg and Jacob JaggerCane saw their efforts from outside the penalty area sail safely over the bar. Shane Tolley was a constant thorn in the side of the home defence and just before the break he collected a clever Nolan flick to see his close range shot blocked by Jake Hutchins and when the ball was returned across the box he rose to head narrowly over the bar. The second half continued in the same vein but after 54 minutes Weymouth got lucky. A clumsy challenge by Ryan Frater on Stuart Yetton saw the central defender pick up a yellow card as he conceded a penalty kick. Yetton climbed to his feet to take the kick but Nathan Abbey guessed right and parried the shot but the
Weymouth player followed in to net from close range. St Neots replaced Ferrari with Jake Woolley and they redoubled their efforts and after 63 minutes they regained the lead with what the home Chairman described as ‘the best goal scored against us this season’. The goal took 14 passes with Farrell being the architect winning the ball in midfield and advancing to send it into the heart of the penalty area. Tolley produced a clever dummy that took the two central defenders out of position allowing Nolan to send a delicate lob for Tolley to latch on to and score with a well placed low shot. It was a confident workmanlike victory that sees St Neots finishing the season in some style.

The pace of the game seemed to drop after that goal although St Neots continued to look comfortably in control and Weymouth mounted their first real attack with Adam Kelly wriggling clear but Spence was quickly across to clear the threat.

Southern League Red Insure Cup Winners 2013/14... Has a nice ring to it don’t you think? Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, for this, our penultimate Calor League Premier Division game of the 2013 /14 season. Today we extend a very warm welcome to our friends from Bashley FC and we hope your Players, Officials and Supporters enjoy your brief stay with us up here in Cambridgeshire before embarking on a safe trip back down to Hampshire this evening. Southern League Red Insure Cup Winners 2013/14........ Has a nice ring to it don’t you think? What a great night Tuesday April 8th turned out to be as we won the trophy for the very first time in only our third season in the Southern League. A classic Cup Final packed with excitement, chances, close misses and a brilliant atmosphere produced by you, our fantastic supporters who came out to cheer the lads on. A crowd of 522 for a midweek game is superb and if we can replicate this on a regular basis, who knows where the club can go? Our historic Cup win was followed up with another Premier Division victory on Saturday, this time at the Bob Lucas Stadium, home
of Weymouth FC. The 2-1 score line doesn’t really tell the full story (please read John Walkers detailed match report) as we really could and should have beaten our hosts by a much bigger margin, however a win is a win and three more points on the board taking us to the Fifty point mark, leaving us with three more games to surpass last season’s total of Fifty-Two. As this was our last fixture requiring Coach Travel, I’d just like to thank all the supporters who have travelled on the Team Coach during the season as your vocal support at our matches has been very much appreciated by the lads and the management and I hope you’ve enjoyed your travels as much as I have this season, some great memories along the way. With us now reaching our last two home league fixtures (and of course, the Hunts FA County Cup Final to come too in May), you will see the Box in The Gregory Suite for your votes for Supporters’ Player Of The Season Award.

If Bill Shankly built the foundations of Liverpool, Bob Paisley built a great house on top of them. His period in charge of Liverpool lead to the most trophyladen era in the club’s illustrious history. In just nine years, Paisley collected 19 trophies, including six league titles, three League Cups, and five Charity Shields. Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, is leading Liverpool to success in three European Cups, becoming the only manager to win that competition three times. He was voted Manager of the Year six times in nine years, dispelling any fears that Shankly’s abrupt departure would end Liverpool’s dominance.
Ernst Happel is one of very few managers who have enjoyed great success at both international and club level. He has won league titles and domestic trophies in four different countries, and has impressed on the European and World stage as well. He won a Dutch championship, a Dutch Cup, three Belgian championships, a Belgian Cup, two German championships, a German Cup, and two Austrian championships during his illustrious managerial career. He also guided the unfancied Feyenoord to the European Cup, and took Hamburg to the same title 13 years later, becoming the first manager to win the trophy with two different clubs. He was in charge of the Dutch team in the 1978 World Cup, and reached the final, only to go down to hosts Argentina.
Mind you, he was there for the bad times too, one year he finished second.

Johan Cruijff Born 25/04/1947
famous goal, known popularly as the ‘Phantom’ goal, because of its seemingly supernatural quality. Somehow, Cruijff managed to jump in the air with his back to goal, and use his heel to score past a beleaguered Atletico Madrid goalkeeper.
Johan Cruijff was born in Amsterdam on the 25th of April 1947, and joined the famous Ajax youth programme only ten years later. He made his first team debut at the age of 17 in 1964 against GVAV. He started as he meant to go on, scoring Ajax’s only goal in their 3-1 defeat. This was the worst season in the club’s history – they finished 13th. Cruijff established himself as a favourite centre-forward in the first team, and the following season Ajax won the league, with Cruiff scoring an incredible 25 goals in 23 appearances, including three hat tricks. From then on, Cruijff became a living legend to Ajax fans. After winning two more European Cups in 1972 and 1973, he signed to Barcelona for six million guilder. Always willing to express his political beliefs publicly, he made himself popular among Catalans by declaring that he could never play for Real Madrid because of its association with the Fascist leader General Franco. He helped Barcelona to their first ‘La Liga’ championship in 14 years in 1973/74, and was named European footballer of the year for good measure. During his tenure at Barcelona, Cruijff scored his most
Like so many of Europe’s best known players of the 1970’s, Cruijff was lured to the United States to play exhibition matches for the New York Cosmos and eventually signed a lucrative contract with the Los Angeles Aztecs. After a season with the Aztecs, he switched coasts, and signed for a season with the Washington Diplomats. By this time the campaign to elevate the status of soccer in the eyes of US sports fans had more or less run its course, and Cruijff returned to the Netherlands in 1981.

We could change position easily, and that’s total football… the first defender was the centre forward, which was me. We had a change of mentality on the field where we thought we could achieve anything.”
A 34 year old Cruijff signed to Ajax but the club decided not to extend his contract after the end of the second season. This angered the Amsterdam-born Cruijff, who moved to arch rivals Feyenoord in protest. He helped the club to its first league and cup double in over a decade. At the end of the 83/84 season, after making 33 appearances and scoring 11 times for Feyenoord, Cruijff retired after 20 years as one of the most prolific strikers in the world.
Cruijff reprised his role as a football technician in managerial roles at Ajax and Barcelona. He led an all-star Barcelona team to victory against Sampdoria at the Wembley European Cup finals in 1992. He is Barcelona’s most successful manager to date; the club won 11 competitions under his stewardship. In 1999 he was named European footballer of the century, and is widely regarded as one of the top five players ever to of played the game.
Cruijff also enjoyed a distinguished career as an international, playing a central role in the famous 1974 Dutch team that came second place in the FIFA World Cup Finals, where he was named player of the tournament. Cruijff is the embodiment of ‘total football’, a style of play developed by Ajax coach Rinus Michaels. The style arose in opposition to the physical aspect of the game

Now how about that for every home game next season, that would be something fantastic. I was thinking of a song everyone could sing as a club anthem. This came to mind watching my other team lose at Crystal Palace the other Saturday, I can only say that I have never heard such consistent singing for a crowd ever in football, palace started with don’t laugh as its quite good really coming out onto the pitch to “Glad all over” by the Dave Clark five. In my opinion second only to “You’ll never walk alone” the Liverpool anthem. Maybe we should borrow the Crystal Palace one for a time and see how we get on. I hope everyone has seen the new lay out and features on our website and having a look back at all of our old programmes from this season. Even though Mark, and myself know each programme backwards they are still a great read.
I certainly never gave any thought to us actually winning some silverware this season but I should have listened to Gary when he told me at the away fixture against Chippinham that the management would “deliver”. I certainly did not think it would be this season though. The club winning the Red Insure Cup in only our second season in the premiership division is something for us all to be proud of. Yes indeed and that coupled with us having over 500
More improvements to the web site are being developed at this moment of which I hope we will all be proud. You can probably see that I am on a mission to make sure that our club Branding will be on par or better than anything in football. Gary, Zema and Nathan are on the case with the team and Lee and Iain with the help of Louise and many others on the case of improving the back of shop. So who’s in charge of improving the attendances, well we have had a few volunteer’s and I can see about 300 more trying to help improve our gates for next season. Are you all on the case?

Condolences on your relegation you a very good club and very nice people and I’m sure that you will re group and soon be back in the Premier division. Having been in a relegation place ourselves for quite some time I know how much pressure it puts on a club to make the right decisions moving forward. Thankfully we had the hindsight and opportunity to be able to bring in a proven and successful management team that I knew would consolidate
supporters watching us made that night something to remember. I understand (as I was away and missed the final) that the atmosphere was quite electric and that the whole crowd shouted for the team willing them on from start to finish.

Today we have the privilege hosting Bashley who will almost certainly find themselves relegated to the South and West Division of the Calor League next month. Already doomed to finish in one of the bottom two places in the table Bashley have had a season to forget beset with problems off the field including a funding crisis which now (happily) appears to have been resolved. Almost certainly the ‘smallest’ club playing at this level Bashley is a small New Forest village that has successfully sustained a side at Steps Three and Four for the past fifteen seasons and were once on the fringe of promotion to the Conference. However in their proud history Bash will remember their semi-final appearance in the FA Vase and a notable run in the FA Trophy in 2001/02.
However what goes around comes around and we look forward to seeing our guests back at Step Three in the not too distant future. Our two visits to Bashley were memorable for different reasons. The first was midweek (and it is a long way on a Tuesday) and the second was last August when we sat in a temporary car park just outside Lyndhurst on a Bank Holiday Saturday resulting in a late kick off. I must finally indulge myself to record congratulations to the Management team and the lads for netting the Red Insure Cup last Tuesday. In the last fifty years (with apologies to County Cup competition) this ranks alongside our trip to Walsall
in the sixties for the FA Cup First Round match and was our first non-County Cup capture for 45 years.
Club History Bashley Football Club was founded in 1947 and joined the Bournemouth League in 1950, progressing through the ranks before leaving in 1983 to join the Hampshire League. In 1986 they became founder members of the Wessex League and won the title for the first three years they took part, 1986/87, 1987/88 and 1988/89. In the 1987/88 season, Bashley came to national prominence after an incredible run in the FA Vase, which came to an end they reached the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Emley in the second leg of the semi-final after a 0-0 draw at the Recreation Ground. The club were accepted into the Southern League Southern Division in 1989/90 and won the title in their first season gaining promotion to the Premier Division. Things almost got even better the following season as they led the table for a long period of time and were in contention for promotion to the Conference, but fell away towards the end to finish in fourth place. Sadly the meteoric rise of

the club came to an end as a result of relegation two years later back to the Southern Division.
The 2001/2002 season was notable for a superb FA Trophy run, ended only by finalists, Stevenage Borough of the Conference, with an unfortunate 1-0 defeat. The 2003/2004 season was a relative disappointment after the heights of previous campaigns and Bashley narrowly missed out on promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division under new manager John Robson and had to settle for a place in Isthmian Division One, as a result of FA restructuring.
A number of close season signings gave the Bashley faithful renewed cause for optimism. They were not to be disappointed! As a result of further FA restructuring, Bash found themselves transferred back into the Southern League South and West Division, and enjoyed an unforgettable record-breaking season, winning the league by an
Unfortunately, 2008-9 was to be a very different season. For long periods during the winter, Bash were in the bottom four, although a run of five straight wins right at the end of the season led to a final position of 14th, well clear of the relegation zone. Bashley exceeded expectations in the 2009/10 season, briefly topping the table after a 5-0 win at Tiverton in October. They spent the vast majority of the season in a play-off place, only to surrender their grip on a top five finish on the final day of the season with defeat at Nuneaton. After a good start last season Bashley struggled during the middle of the season and suffered losses to lower ranked opposition in all four cup competitions. However a solid run towards the end of the season ensured Premier Division survival.
In the 1994/95 season, Bashley reached the First Round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, and won 1-0 at Chesham to set up a Second Round tie with Swansea at the Recreation Ground. Despite losing 1-0, Lee Walker hit the post in injury time and Richie Paskins had a clear chance which wasn’t taken as Bash almost caused a huge upset.
Did you know?.. In August 1997 ex-European Cup winner Jimmy Case was appointed as manager and Bash were promotion challengers during the 1997-98 season, eventually finishing third and just missing out on a return to the Premier Division.

An excellent run in the second half of the 2005/06 season took Bash to just outside the play off places, and gave hope that the following season would be successful.
Bashley acquitted themselves very well in the Southern League Premier Division the following season, and finished in fifth place at the higher level, despite long term injuries to key players. The 2007-08 season unfortunately ended in disappointment with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Team Bath in the play-off semi-final, a result that was particularly harsh on Bashley.

Bashley came to prominence again when their excellent young midfielder Wade Elliott signed for AFC Bournemouth in January 2000 for £5,000, with the club receiving further money based on appearances. Wade has now progressed to the Championship with Burnley after a fine spell with the Cherries.

Paul made his debut for Bashley in 1995. He moved to Lymington & New Milton and then re-joined Bashley in the summer of 2003. Gaz became joint manager with Stewart Kearn at the end of last season and he is now joint manager with John Pyatt. He probably thought he had ended his playing career but recently he has had to put on his boots to cover for injuries. He is now getting close to making 300 appearances for the club. Gaz is a Bashley legend!
Adam is dual registered with Salisbury City. He made his debut for Bashley in September in the 2-0 win over Moneyfields in the FA Cup. He is now firmly established as the first choice left side defender.
Age 19. Joined Bashley before the start of this season from Verwood Town where he scored 30 goals in the Wessex league in two seasons. Jack had youth team experience at Saints, AFC Bournemouth and Dorchester Town. He also played for Hamworthy United and he is now dual registered with Blackfield and Langley.
JOHN PYATT JOINT MANAGER John came to Bashley in October to replace Stewart Kearn. He is an experienced manager and has had success with Lymington Town where he gained promotion to the Wessex League, and with Brockenhurst Town where, last season, he gained promotion to the Wessex Premier League. NIC JONES GOALKEEPER Nic is a local lad who has played for Poole Town, Dorchester Town and Bournemouth Poppies. He joined Bashley at the start of this season. A great shot-stopper. Nic has become famous for his victory celebrations! MONTAGUE GEORGE GOALKEEPER Age 17. Monty is dual registered with Salisbury City. He made his Bashley debut in December in a confident performance at St. Albans City. SAM ROBERTS DEFENDER / MIDFIELDER Sam is dual registered with Salisbury City. He made his debut for Bashley in September as a midfield player in the 2-0 win over Moneyfields in the FA Cup. He is now firmly established as the first choice right side defender.
BRAD STRICKLAND DEFENDER Brad was at Brockenhurst College where he played for the AFC Bournemouth YAL team. He joined Bashley from AFCB in the summer of 2012. He is now in his second season with the club. Brad is developing a good partnership with Dave Marden at the centre of the defence. DAVE MARDEN DEFENDER
JACK ODAM STRIKER / MIDFIELDER Age 18. Joined Bashley from AFC Totton before the start of this season. Jack is top scorer this season. He has taken on a midfield role since being made team captain. Jack has the most votes in the Bash47 Man of the Match contest and is a fans favourite.
Dave joined Bashley from Brockenhurst Town in October and made his debut in the 1-0 home defeat to Chesham United. He has also played for Lymington Town, Sholing and Totton & Eling.

Age 25. Jason was released by Saints Academy and joined Eastleigh where he played three seasons in the reserves. During this time he was at Brockenhurst College where he was captain of the AFC Bournemouth YAL team. Jason moved from Eastleigh to the Bash three seasons ago and has made 40 appearances for the club.
LEWIS BLACKMORE MIDFIELDER Joined Bashley from New Milton Town in September. Lewis was previously in the AFC Bournemouth youth team. He scored the goal in the 1-0 win at Bedford Town. SCOTT JOYCE STRIKER Joined Bashley from Brockenhurst Town in October, having already scored 20 goals this season. Scott has also played for Wimborne Town, Poole Town and Bournemouth Poppies.
Manny joined Bashley from Banbury United in December. He has also played for AFC Totton and Blackfield and Langley.

Sophie then did a degree (BSc Hons in Sports Therapy) at Chichester University 2010-13 and has also played rugby for Oakmedians in Bournemouth.

Who are ya?
They really don’t make football like they did in the 1970s, do they? Could you picture this scene in today’s game?
It is every football fan’s dream. To walk out in a big European stadium, on a big European night, side by side with some of the best players in the world.
It involves a game between Arsenal & Liverpool from September 1972. In it, the linesman, Dennis Drewitt (they don’t make names like they did in the 70s either), pulled a calf muscle and was unable to continue. Rather than abandon the game, and in the days before fourth officials and so-forth, the matchday announcer at Highbury simply asked over the tannoy whether there was a qualified referee in the crowd.
For Karl Power, that was exactly what happened on the night of 18 April 2001. Power, an unemployed labourer from Greater Manchester, somehow managed to evade security at Bayern Munich’s Olympic Stadium to walk out with the Manchester Utd team, before cheekily posing alongside the likes of Dwight Yorke, Ryan Giggs & Fabian Barthez for the official team picture.
Step forward prominent-chinned TV pundit Jimmy Hill, watching from the stands as a spectator. Ditching his civvies for an ill-fitting tracksuit, Hill proceeded to run the line to howls of laughter (and probably abuse too), as the game finished in a 0-0 draw. Hard to imagine Alan Hansen or Andy Gray doing something similar, isn’t it?
Eagle-eyed Gary Neville did actually spot the imposter, and pointed him out to the rest of the team. But Power, a big Eric Cantona fan, apparently replied “shut it, I’m doing this for Eric” Bravo, sneaking onto the pitch, and telling Gary Neville to shut it. Superb stuff. Power also hit headlines when he emerged onto the field at Lords during an England test match, and played tennis at Wimbledon- beating Greg Rusedski with great ease. Boom boom.

All Good, All Go! Lee Kearns The time is 8.46pm on a Tuesday evening and I’m sitting at my kitchen table, I have a large glass of Red (I never new Ernie Els did wine but I have to say after buying it on a whim its proved to be rather delicious) and I’m trying to think of what I can say without sounding like I’ve eaten a bucket full of beans. By the way have you tried the Heinz mixed bean baked beans? I did a few weeks ago and I have to say that apart from taking my “lee you are kidding me, open the window before I divorce you” to another level, they did nothing for me. My guest on our cup final night was a chap called Paul Goodwin who is formally a director at Stirling Albion FC but is currently Head of Supporters Direct Scotland. He’s a friend of a friend who I have met on a few occasions but not since I turned my back on the small dimpled ball and moved onto the larger leather one. He (Paul) is unashamedly a football nut whose life, both personally and professionally, revolves around football. Paul has Footballitus a condition that allows you to seem normal in every way but the reality is you are consumed by, intoxicated by and overwhelmed by Football. A great bloke whose company on the night, that we as a football club achieved our highest honour, was top notch. He was full of praise for the setup we have and was picking my brains about how we are looking at everything outside of the “semi-pro football setup” in order to develop and fund the next stage of the clubs growth. In particular he was very interested in the Apprenticeship and scholarship programmes we have in place and the expansion that this area can be taken too. This is not new to non-league football however it is all about how it’s delivered, where it’s delivered and who delivers it. Environment and a focus on what is best for the young footballers long
term future is always at the top of our list. It’s a different ball game now compared to twelve months ago with all educational providers looking to retain students. Schools are now very keen to keep 16 year old school leavers because of the funding now available which in turn means that colleges are much more agreeable to what we want and the expectations we hold as paramount to our success are far more accessible.
Well done Gary, Zema, Nathan, Richard, Carole, Malcolm, Mick and all the playing staff for giving us a great night and a great win. The supporters as always played a massive part and will continue to play a massive part in the clubs ongoing success. I’m not going to bang the drum with regards to getting the crowd numbers up because we all know what difference it makes to the club and the team. The season ends with the Hunts Senior Cup on Friday 2nd May and the new season
begins immediately afterwards, working hard on all aspects of the club to ensure that we take another step forward. The pitch renovation starts in the second week of May with particular focus on the two beaches (Blackpool and Yarmouth) we have between the goal posts. Plan is to core, Sand dress, seed and feed with both goal areas being dug up and re-laid to a depth of around 1 foot. The club house will be repainted and the site in general will have a once over. Thanks to Mick Hunt for all his work and effort in all this. The ISSI 3G Arena will be washed, cleaned and re-brushed to breathe some life back into it and the astro changing block will have a revamp job to. Season tickets for next year will go on sale at the end of May. Can all those that are current season tickets holders please hand in their pass at the last league game they attend (either Bashley or Chippingham) New tickets will be issued (different to the current ones) but I’d like to recycle the old ones.Finally I welcome all from Bashley to the Cozy, please enjoy our hospitality and good luck to you in the future. Wonderful non-league
grounds There are many great new stadiums in Non League football, ours is one of them. But what about those lovely old grounds with those beautiful old stands. We take a look at them up and down the country.
Marlow – Alfred Davis Memorial Ground

The Alfred Davis Memorial ground has been home to Marlow since 1924. Marlow were formed in 1870 and were one of the 15 clubs in the very first FA Cup competition. The clubs ground at Crown Meadow had been sold during World War I and after five years at the basic and unsatisfactory Star Meadow, the club secured the use of a field just off Oak tree Road. The finances had been organised by club secretary Alfred Davis who sadly passed away before the ground was opened. Fittingly the committee named the new venue in his memory. The wonderful main stand was built in 1930 and looks as good now as it has ever done. Lovingly kept and with only the slightly unsightly addition of steel fire escapes in recent years, the stand is a masterpiece of construction. The cover opposite was opened in 1950 and was joined behind the goal by one of a modern design in 1992. The top goal has a shallow open terrace behind which is an all weather surface opened in 1991. The club has gained an extra source of revenue by turning over one corner of the ground to a small electricity generator. The retro feel of the ground is augmented by the presence of 1970’s R.Whites Lemonade steel rubbish bins dotted around pitch side. However, the ground remains picturesque and a more than fitting tribute to Alfred Davis.
Victoria Park has gained cult status amongst ground aficionados over the last two decades. It was carved out of a clay quarry in 1936 and the resulting banking has created a unique footballing venue. The banks are covered in grass, trees and bushes and are criss-crossed by numerous pathways. Behind both goals are white shelters, useful in inclement weather, but the regular followers of The Rovers could choose a different vantage point for every home game during a season and would still have plenty more to try out! The attractive pavilion also doubles as a memorial to lads from the village killed in World War II. Victoria Park is a football watcher’s paradise, plenty to look at around the ground if the on pitch action is not too great!

They’ll have the play-offs to look forward to. Whether you like them or you don’t; you have to acknowledge the great tension and atmosphere the play-offs create.
As I’m writing this, most teams in the Skrill Premier have three games left and but for Cambridge United, the play-off places are still yet to be decided. I’m not sure you can look past Grimsby and Gateshead. I saw the latter last week against Hereford and Gary Mills’ side will be a tough proposition in the play-offs.
The last spot looks like going to either FC Halifax Town or Braintree which is fantastic for other part-time sides who are constantly told ‘you can’t compete in the Conference Premier’. Cambridge can be devastating on their day but history will tell you the team finishing in second struggle to get through the play-offs. It must be psychological. On paper the second placed team should be the best side in the play-offs but missing out on the title and the added pressure of being best of the rest can take its toll. The biggest criticism I’ve heard of the play-offs is that “it’s not fair”. Every team knows what it’s getting itself into at the start of the season. Imagine no play-offs and the top two going up automatically in each Non-League division? I’d be interested to see how many would prefer that route but I doubt it would be many. Managers and players I’ve spoken to, including ones that have finished second and not gone up, still say they wouldn’t get rid of the play-offs which sounds to me like a ringing endorsement.
Havant & Waterlooville have come into contention in Skrill South and the play-offs in that division is full of big hitters and promotion could go to any of the four sides. Similarly, the Evo-Stik NPL looks extremely tight and FC United of Manchester fans won’t be looking forward to them considering they’ve lost three finals in a row! All eyes will be on Maidstone United to see if they can get into the Ryman Premier play-offs after finally being allowed in but in form Kingstonian will be fancied if they make it. And in the Calor Premier, we may end up seeing some high-scoring shoot-outs. Two sides currently in the play-off spots, Chesham and Stourbridge, have scored over 100 goals with Cambridge City and St Albans netting over 80! So in a couple of weeks’ time, if you’re lucky enough to be watching your team in the play-offs, just remember that you could be at home twiddling your thumbs. Or even worse, out shopping! A whole season can be defined in 90 minutes. Fantastic campaign ending in promotion or yet another stumble at the final hurdle - the margins in football are extremely fine. You’ll often hear the play-offs referred to as ‘the end of season of lottery’. I don’t know about you but if I could enter a lottery where I had one in four chance of winning, I’d snap your hand off!
In the Skrill North it looks like a battle between Boston and Guiseley for the last spot and whoever loses out on the title between North Ferriby and AFC Telford United may struggle to overcome that disappointment.

The beautifully designed Allianz Arena is home to both Munich-based football teams: Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich. It is the only stadium across the Europe that is able to change colours to reflect which of the two teams are playing—red for Bayern and blue for 1860 Munich. The stadium has been a huge hit with both sets of fans thanks to the fans being closer to the pitch—something that caused an issue at the previous site, the Olympiastadion, which had a running track around the pitch that made for a rather poor atmosphere. The relatively new Allianz Arena will surely make a name for itself as one of the greatest stadiums in world football for years to come.
The Maracana is one of the most notable stadiums in world football, situated in one of the most beautiful cities throughout the world. The stadium hosted the 1950 decisive World Cup group-stage match (there was no final that year) between Brazil and Uruguay that saw a staggering capacity of 199,854. Although the hosts tasted bitter defeat, the match will go down as one of the classics in the game’s history.
