Attendance Policies:

Students are expected to attend class each week. Fellow students’ development is affected when a classmate is absent because the majority of the work done in class is ensemble in nature. School conflicts for concerts, performances, etc. may be excused when advance written notice is given. Illness may be excused with advance notice by phone or email. In case of a family emergency, a call within 24 hours of the absence is requested. Should a student miss multiple classes for unacceptable reasons, the status of the student will change to class participation only and the student will not take part in the final performance or presentation. Preparatory Division

The Preparatory Division classes for ages 7–19 are suitable for students who have talents they wish to develop through sequential study to prepare for college-level training and/or a career in the arts. Students are required to audition before a panel of arts advisors for placement in our structured curriculum.

Exploratory Division

The Exploratory Division allows students from toddlers through adults to select classes that suit their interests. These 10-week courses offer opportunities to discover talents, explore interests and experience the arts.

Workshops and Master Classes

Preparatory Division students who are high school sophomores and above may choose to enrich their training throughout the year. Information regarding workshops and master classes will be distributed through class instructors and will be posted on the website. Additional fees may apply.

RUTH ECKERD HALL

scholarships Ruth Eckerd Hall annually awards scholarships in the areas of drama, voice, jazz, instrumental and dance to high school juniors and seniors currently enrolled at the Hoffman Institute. First place awards are $2,000. Applications will be available August 31 and the submission deadline is October 19, 2010. Preliminary auditions are November 3 and 4. Finals will be held on December 5. Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students who wish to strengthen their performance skills.

Private Lesson Fees and Policies

• Lessons may be purchased in multiples of 4 (e.g., 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.) • Lesson fees are as follows: $22.50-$27.00 for 30 minutes $33.75-$38.75 for 45 minutes $45.00-$50.00 for 60 minutes

• We accept credit or debit cards. For your convenience, automatic payment for private lessons is available. Lessons will not be provided without payment. • Private Lesson Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made no less than 24 hours prior to the lesson to receive a makeup lesson (which will be scheduled at the discretion of the teacher). PREPARATORY CLASSES TRACK

With a strong emphasis on technique, the Dance Track provides a course of study that prepares the dancer for a future career or collegiate study. Jazz and tap technique classes are the foundation for the Tap Ensemble. Tap repertoire will include cutting-edge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk.

Beginner/Advanced Beginner Tap Technique

Ages: 7–11, Tuesdays, 6:15–7:15 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: Beth Caprio For the beginner/advanced beginner studying the basic fundamentals of tap technique. All styles of tap are taught, from traditional rhythm tap to a broad range of tap such as Broadway theater, Fred Astaire and rhythmic styles of today. Tap shoes required.

Beginner/Advanced Beginner Jazz Technique

Ages: 7–11, Tuesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: TBA Children are taught the fundamentals and language of jazz in an atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and development of rhythm and isolation, which allow more freedom of expression and movement.

Intermediate Theater Rhythm Tap

Ages: 11–18, Tuesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: Beth Caprio For the intermediate tap dancer who has mastered basic tap fundamentals such as shuffles, time steps, Irishes, Maxi Fords and cramp rolls. Students develop a personal style and musicality by creating their own rhythms and sounds. Intermediate rhythmic tap choreography is taught and dancers explore improvisation. This class enables dancers to excel in tap dance. Tap shoes required.

Advanced Tap Technique

Jazz Technique

Ages: 11–18, Tuesdays, 6:15–7:15 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: Amy Phillips Technique is the foundation for all dance movement. A strong technical foundation in jazz enables a dancer to focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance.

Advanced Jazz Technique and Conditioning

Prerequisite: jazz and ballet experience Ages: 12–18, Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: Amy Phillips A background in ballet technique supports a jazz dancer’s strong and sharp movements. This advanced technique class emphasizes the concept of isolation technique, a feature common to all the different and personal characteristics of jazz dance. The essential skills of focus, projection, interpretation and style, linked to the ability to absorb and memorize choreography, are also developed.

Hoffman Institute Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble

Ages: 11–18 Syncopated Heel Clickers Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm, Advanced Jazz 8:15–9:15 pm, Advanced Tap Thursdays, 5:30–7:30 pm, Ensemble Rehearsal Broadway Toe Tappers Tuesdays, 6:15–7:15 pm, Intermediate Jazz 7:15–8:15 pm, Intermediate Theater Rhythm Tap Thursdays, 6:30–8:30 pm, Ensemble Rehearsal Tuition: $600.00 per term Director: Beth Caprio Under the direction of Beth Caprio, the Hoffman Institute’s own resident tap ensemble meets twice a week to study and rehearse for performance opportunities. The ensemble is comprised of two groups that rehearse at appropriate levels and then combine their talents for performance opportunities. Past appearances by the ensemble have included Walt Disney World, the Bay Area Idol Talent competition, the Hoffman Institute’s spring concert on the Main Stage, and as the opening act for Maroon 5! The youth tap repertoire includes cutting-edge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk. Through education, performing, presenting tap events, collaborating with other artists, and by investing in talented youth, this ensemble strives to promote, expand and preserve the American art form of tap dance. PREPARATORY CLASSES TRACK

The Drama Track includes four levels that build the essential skills and tools needed for the actor to succeed in performance and to prepare for further study.

Level I: Setting the Stage

Ages: 7–9, Saturdays, 11:30 am–1:30 pm Tuition: $350.00, script fee: $25.99, including tax Instructor: Barry Hamilton Level I focus is on developing the skill sets, theater vocabulary, and knowledge a young theater performer needs to sustain a performance, risk as a performer, develop in an ensemble art form, engage an audience, and grow as an artist through creative play, pantomime, reading, and acting out familiar stories and characters. As the class and individual students progress, work begins on developing the actors’ physical abilities, character connection, emotional comprehension, and listening and focusing skills. Course work will be showcased at the end of each semester.

Level II: Creating Connections

Ages: 10–12, Saturdays, 11:30 am–1:30 pm Tuition: $350.00, script fee: $25.99, including tax Instructor: Margaret Branscombe Level II continues the refinement of skills covered in Level I while beginning the development of the student’s primary resources (the actor’s tool kit): the body, the mind, the voice and the imagination. Students explore the role that each of these tools plays in character creation, connection to setting, and listening and focusing skills. Further expansion of work in a collaborative ensemble will be linked with monologue reading and writing, and scene work. Course work will be showcased at the end of each semester.

Level III: Drama in Motion

Ages: 13–18, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $350.00, script fee: $25.99, including tax Instructor: Ian Beck Level III further develops the actor’s physical skills through various techniques from the Alexander, Meyerhold, and commedia dell’arte mask and body work. These techniques will be applied to the vocal and physical work of the singer/actor to assist in the creation of stronger and more truthful moments. With the incorporation of music and storytelling, the application of these skills culminates in the writing of original performance pieces.

The Hoffman Players Comprised of Levels III and IV: Drama Students collaborate on performance pieces to be presented in December and April. Level IV: Focused Studies

Ages: 14–18, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $350.00, script fee: $25.99, including tax Instructor: Jack Holloway Level IV addresses the needs of the teen actor who is preparing material for competition and college auditions. While continuing to develop the actors’ vocal and physical skills of expression, students will delve more deeply into understanding the role of the actor in professional theater. Students focus on the world of the playwright, learning to create truthful moments from a published play. Class work focuses on the growth and skill development of each individual student through monologues, duets, and student directed pieces from both original written works and classic dramatic repertoire.

Ages: 14–18, Thursdays, 2:30–4:00 pm Fridays, Evening at the Murray events as scheduled Tuition: $270.00 Instructor: Ian Beck Sound, lights, props and basic stage management. Learn advanced technical and practical applications of construction, rigging and design. From soldering to board operation, gaffing to equalizing, and rehearsal schedules to prompt books, this class will change your FB status from lackey to hero. Students will assist with technical needs for live performances on selected Evening at the Murray events.

Students are placed in a musicianship class of an appropriate level through an audition process which determines current knowledge of music literacy, sight-reading, ear training and vocal technique. The Vocal Track provides the necessary tools for vocal performance and/or further study.

The Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir

Levels I & II Ages: 7–12, Saturdays, 9:00–9:45 am, musicianship class 9:45–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $375.00, includes musicianship class and Choir Instructors: Kathy Bawel, Bill Cusick The Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir prides itself both in entertaining its audiences and in achieving music literacy for all its members. Students are trained in sight-reading, vocal technique, and two- and three-part harmony. Performances reflect the diversity of choral repertoire, offering a variety of concerts both at Ruth Eckerd Hall and off site during the fall and spring semesters. Come audition to be a part of this fun and high-level performance choir!

This is an auditioned choir for intermediate girls in grades 6–12. Students in this choir will focus on vocal tone, choral blend, and independent part singing. Opus One Vocal Jazz Ensemble NEW!

Ages: 13–18, Mondays, 6:00–8:00 pm Tuition: $375.00 Instructor: Rosemary Collins Opus One is an auditioned group of singers in grades 8–12. Students will be challenged to develop their skills through ensemble and solo singing, improvisation, and performance technique. The Opus One Jazz Ensemble will sing a variety of music in the vocal jazz idiom – a cappella, with a combo, and with the big band! Although experience with vocal jazz is not necessary, a high level of musicianship is a requirement for selection into this ensemble. There will be many performance opportunities as well as a full program at the end of each semester.

Teen Troupe

Students from 14 to 18 years of age may apply to become part of this elite ensemble that performs at hospitals, senior centers, and at events for charities, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the City of Clearwater. This experience can serve to broaden awareness of alternative career opportunities and the role of the arts in medicine while developing a deeper understanding of the connection between students and the community. Participants are eligible to use the Teen Troupe as their community service project for Bright Futures Scholarships. In partnership with Morton Plant Mease Hospitals, this ensemble brings an atmosphere of healing to members of our community through the joy of music with songs which are selected, rehearsed and choreographed by the students and are performed at hospitals and senior centers as part of the Arts in Medicine program. PREPARATORY CLASSES TRACK Students are placed in our multi-level Jazz Track based on their knowledge of music

theory, instrument proficiency, and jazz improvisation skills. The Jazz Track includes participation in a musicianship/improvisation class and group and combo performance. Performance opportunities include the Ruth Eckerd Hall Main Stage, the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Flavor of Jazz and the Lakeside Jazz Festival.* The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. * Participation fees for the Festival are not included in tuition.

The Ruth Eckerd Hall Lab Band

The Lab Band is designed to give the traditional band student an opportunity to learn jazz style. Rehearsing and performing big band charts of moderate difficulty, the Lab Band offers students an opportunity to apply the concepts from jazz musicianship classes to the performance of various forms of jazz including the blues. Theory classes provide students with the foundations of music, including reading, writing and listening activities as well as mastery of elements essential for improvisation. Students in this group may audition for placement in the higher-level Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Youth Big Band when positions become available.

Basic Improvisation

Building on the fundamentals of jazz literacy in which the student has demonstrated proficiency, he/she will add the elements of minor scales and arpeggios, major, minor and modal scales and arpeggios, basic chord construction including major, minor, diminished and augmented, and symbols and vocabulary specific to jazz music. In addition, participants continue development of aural skills in recognizing melodic and harmonic intervals. Students begin applying this knowledge to their instruments.

Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Youth Big Band

This ensemble is comprised of the most accomplished and talented students in the Jazz Track. Participants are challenged and rewarded by studying and performing literature of the highest quality. The history and development of jazz music is explored. Performances are on the Ruth Eckerd Hall Main Stage and at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in Coachman Park.

Advanced Improvisation

Advanced Improvisation is a hands-on theory experience which provides students an opportunity to use the theoretical knowledge they have mastered and apply it to their instruments. Building on the concepts previously studied (described above), participants add collegiate-level material including modal scales, chord extensions and alterations. Students learn to transcribe and play a solo performed by a jazz recording artist.

Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo

Students in this advanced-level group will be featured performers at events for both Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. Appearances include: Harvesting for Scholarships, the garden cocktail reception honoring Gala patrons and sponsors of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Spring Gala, and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday’s Flavor of Jazz. This combo is comprised of the most senior and experienced players. Participants in the Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo will receive full scholarships for all Jazz Track studies for the 2010–2011 season courtesy of Clearwater Jazz Holiday.

musical THEATER

Musical Theater: An American Art Form

Edward Crader and Amy Phillips combine their talents and expertise as lead instructors for musical theater. With dramatic coaching by Jared O’Roark, these courses offer a unique opportunity to develop the “triple threat”: a performer equally skilled in voice, dance and drama. Musical theater classes bridge the Vocal, Drama and Dance Tracks. Ongoing training in these disciplines is essential to becoming a triple threat. This can be achieved through class instruction and/or private lessons.

Broadway Song Showcase

Prerequisite: Must be currently enrolled in advanced vocal, dance, or drama training at the Hoffman Institute. Ages: 14–18, Wednesdays, 5:30–7:00 pm Tuition: $290.00, text and materials fee: $67.57, including tax Vocal Instructor: Ed Crader; Drama Instructor: Jared O’Roark Instruction for this 24-week class will focus on the music from Edges. This nontraditional musical by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul is a contemporary song cycle about four young adults asking the classic coming-of-age questions: “Who am I?” and “Who do I want to become?” Confronting emotions, escaping expectations, and deciphering complicated relationships, the songs cover such universal issues as love, commitment, identity and meaning. Edges provides an ideal forum to explore and expand vocal and dramatic repertoire. There will be a presentation in December and a public performance of Edges on Friday, April 22, 2011.

Broadway Dance for the Stage

Prerequisite: Must be currently enrolled in advanced vocal, dance, or drama training at the Hoffman Institute Ages: 14–18 years, Wednesdays, 7:30–9:00 pm Tuition: $270.00 Instructor: Amy Phillips Broadway Dance takes a turn for the dramatic as students learn a variety of musical dance styles, all with the important intent of setting the tone of a scene or establishing a character’s mood. Not only will dancers expand their repertoire of Broadway style choreography, but they will do it “with attitude!” There will be two public presentations: one in December and one more formally as part of the Dance Showcase on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

Performances at Ruth Eckerd Hall

Every year, the Hoffman Institute offers Preparatory students the opportunity to see select performances at Ruth Eckerd Hall at a discounted price using their Prep Guild cards. Performances are from an approved list generated at the beginning of each new season. The list is available all year at www.hoffmanperformingarts.org and on the information monitor located in the Art Link Lounge at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute. Watch for updates as shows are added throughout the year!

How To Use Your Prep Guild Card

From the approved list, select the performances you would like to attend and present your Prep Guild card at the Ticket Office to receive two (2) tickets per performance at $10.00 each. Please note: Contact the Education Registrars immediately if your card is lost or stolen. There will be a $5.00 service fee to replace lost or stolen cards.

How Can You Get A Prep Guild Card?

Simply enroll in any of our Preparatory class offerings! Once you are enrolled, a Prep Guild card will be issued to you in class by your teacher. Students taking private lessons at the Institute are included in the Prep Guild.

Kids Make Music 1 ~ Sing, Play and Learn

Kids Make Music 2 ~ Explore Musical Concepts and Instruments

Ages: 3–5 Wednesdays, 12:45–1:45 pm Tuition per term: $120.00 Materials fee: $29.50, including tax Instructors: Rick and Debbie Christie This engaging class celebrates children’s love of nature and growing independence through activities which focus on the world around them. Based on the “My Neighborhood Community” curriculum, these classes are designed to build attention span and selfexpression and include singing, chanting, focused listening, music games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement and storytelling. It is suggested that Kids Make Music 1 be taken prior to this class. One parent per child is required.

Theater of Wonder

Ages: 3–5, Saturdays, 9:00–11:00 am Tuition per term: $150.00, text/materials fee: $29.77, including tax Instructor: Ruth Ann Rauter The Moon Tree Story is the theme for this magical exploration of Mother Nature’s changes in the autumn season. Children create their own picture books with watercolor painting and bring the story to life through song and dance, pumpkins and props, mime and drama. This creative experience nurtures each child’s sense of wonder and belonging, imagination and whole child development. On the last day of class, students will share their version of the Moon Tree Story with family and friends.

Tiny Dancer: Ballet/Tap Combo

Ages: 4–6, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm Tuition: $100.00 Instructor: TBA Children are taught the fundamentals and language of dance in general and ballet and tap in particular in a fun, playful atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and developing a love of dance.

Singing Stars

Ages: 6–9, Thursdays, 5:15–6:30 pm Tuition per term: $125.00 Instructor: TBA Does your child love to sing? Is he or she too young for the Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir? This course offers each child the readiness and skill set needed to prepare for performing by incorporating fun games to teach music literacy. Students enjoy singing a variety of entertaining, age-appropriate repertoire. This class culminates with a presentation at the end of the term. Students may be recommended for the Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir after one term.

Comic Heroes

Anyone interested in professional work will receive ongoing information regarding non-union castings, agents, photographers, etc.

Improv Sketch Comedy

And unlocking the toolkit is a ton of fun! Guided group exercises and theatrical games using the basic skills of improvisation teach students to think on their feet, explore their own creativity, and harness the power of humor. This class also includes sketch and scene writing.

Adult On Camera Acting

Ages: 18 and up, Wednesdays, 7:00–9:00 pm Tuition: $24.00 per class, $96 to enroll Instructor: Peggy Sheffield Auditions, character development, camera technique, memorization and overcoming nerves. Taught by professional actor Peggy Sheffield, this class is for those already working in the TV/film industry as well as serious actors seeking a deeper connection to their roles and a higher level of work. This class is designed to improve existing skills, develop new skills and techniques, and prepare students to work as professionals. *This class offers a flexible group lesson format that allows you to plan around your schedule. Classes are limited in size and enrollment requires payment for four classes in advance. However, students will not be charged for planned absences (24 hours notice required). Here’s your chance to develop basic and advanced skills for the stage. Actors’ Workshop

For the more experienced actor, these six-week classes provide a variety of practical methods and exercises with which to practice and improve your craft. The course includes script study and character development. Individualized attention is given to the audition process through monologue development and improvisation exercises.

Zombies In Training

Eckerd Theater Company and the Hoffman Institute present ASYLUM, an original play by Ian Beck and Jack Holloway, a Halloween treat featuring ETC’s professional actors . . . and a lot of zombies.
