DEAR FRIENDS OF RUTH ECKERD HALL: As the 2009–2010 season continues at Ruth Eckerd Hall, we invite you to pause for a moment and reflect on the past season’s highlights and achievements. Following a wonderful 25th anniversary season in 2007–2008, Ruth Eckerd Hall continued to mature as an organization. We shine throughout the Tampa Bay area as a cultural landmark and an artistic cornerstone in our very special community. It is no secret that the economic conditions of the past year brought with it many challenges to all of us as individuals, to this organization as a nonprofit and to our community as a part of the global society facing a very real downturn. Yet as Ruth Eckerd Hall’s 2008–2009 season came to a close, we were left with feelings of gratitude for the large number of donors that supported our successful fiscal year end “Close the Gap” campaign. Thanks to this type of incredible community support, Ruth Eckerd Hall maintained lean operations, a strong structure and a focused commitment to a mission that resonates throughout our community. The Ruth Eckerd Hall team was proud to deliver some great programming as part of the 2008–2009 season. With the Florida premier of the national tour of LEGALLY BLONDE The Musical and the introduction of a new Off-Broadway series of interactive shows in our Murray Studio Theater that featured Dixie’s Tupperware Party, The Awesome 80’s Prom and Late Nite Catechism, we provided nearly 300 performances to nearly 300,000 arts patrons. Additionally, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s educational programming offered through The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute touched the lives of nearly 100,000 residents with over 176,000 hours of arts experiences. We are proud to say that Ruth Eckerd Hall’s impact in the Tampa Bay area continues to grow. On behalf of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Board of Directors and staff, we feel extremely fortunate that the Tampa Bay area continues to value our arts, entertainment and educational programming. As members, donors, volunteers and neighbors, the success of Ruth Eckerd Hall is dependent on your support and dedication to the original vision of a gathering place for the community, where people can connect with one another in shared experiences through the arts. We hope that you continue to support Ruth Eckerd Hall with your generosity for years to come. Thank you for your commitment, dedication and support to Our Theater, Our Town. Best regards,

Our Stage. Ruth Eckerd Hall continues to lead the Tampa Bay market with the best and widest variety of programming. From the Main Stage, to the pre-renovation performances at the Capitol Theatre, to off-site events, this nationally recognized performing arts center entered its 26th season by continuing to be a driving force in improving the quality of life in the Tampa Bay area through excellent programming and first-class, far-reaching performing arts education opportunities. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s diverse programming brings over 400,000 arts patrons together in Pinellas county annually for performances or arts education experiences. Ruth Eckerd Hall has consistently ranked in the top 10 venues world wide for number of tickets sold to concerts and events. For the year 2009, according to Billboard magazine, Ruth Eckerd Hall ranked #1 in the world in venues having 2,500 seats or less based on gross ticket sales for the year and ranked #8 in the world for the decade for venues with 5,000 seats or less.

The St. Petersburg Times’ Broadway Series at Ruth Eckerd Hall attracts new audiences and entertains a committed base of Broadway lovers. The 2008–2009 season included the Tampa Bay area premier of Legally Blonde The Musical, The Pajama Game, the three-time Tony Award® winning musical Avenue Q, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Hairspray, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Drowsy Chaperone and Mamma Mia. These shows played to a total Broadway audience of almost 50,000 people. Ruth Eckerd Hall programming continued to reach new heights during the 2008–2009 season, by presenting some of the most compelling dance offerings such as the 4

Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble

Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, the Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet’s Giselle, classical music superstar Joshua Bell, as well as traditional favorites such as Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. Ruth Eckerd Hall ventured into new territory by teaming with the Moscow Classical Ballet to present a more traditional version of The Nutcracker than in years past. The holiday classic was again the only performance of The Nutcracker in the area which was performed to live music. And the music was provided by none other than Ruth Eckerd Hall’s community partner in the arts, The Florida Orchestra. Thousands of families were entertained with an annual presentation of Sesame Street Live’s When Elmo Grows Up, Disney Playhouse Live and the first-ever appearance in the Bay area of Imagination Movers. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s own Eckerd Theater Company brought the best in affordable family theater to the stage including performances of Vote?, Interrupting Vanessa and The Great Alphabet Adventure.

Our Legacy.

Ruth Eckerd Hall continues to host the biggest entertainers, and flaunts the busiest schedule in the Bay Area of breakout stars to the most legendary acts in the world. More than 75 pop, rock and jazz artists were presented between the Main Stage and the Capitol Theatre during the 2008– 2009 Season. Enrique Iglesias kicked off the season with a steamy concert and a sold out house, followed by acts such as Grammy® winner Peter Frampton, Alanis Morissette, 311, John Legend, B.B. King, Counting Crows, Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith and Cheap Trick’s Sergeant Pepper Band Tribute. Legendary acts including Tony Bennett, Carol Burnette, Jerry Lewis, Bernadette Peters, Bobby Vinton and many others rounded out the season. These acts exemplify the diversity in programming that Ruth Eckerd Hall is committed to bringing patrons. The 2008–2009 season also saw an addition to the Ruth Eckerd Hall family. The City of Clearwater and Ruth Eckerd Hall joined forces to renovate and revitalize the historic Capitol Theatre located on downtown Clearwater’s beautiful Cleveland Street. This project is part of the plan to re-energize downtown Clearwater, and the Theatre is an integral part of the unique character of the area. Constructed and established in 1921 as the Capitol Theatre this classic structure, complete with a large mezzanine and furnishings reminiscent of a classic Hollywood theater, is one of the oldest operating theaters in the State of Florida.

Ruth Eckerd Hall’s programming department continued to book talent for the Taste of Pinellas, and such incomparable talent as Tony Bennett for the annual Clearwater Jazz Holiday. Ruth Eckerd Hall is one of the busiest venues in the nation, which hosted nearly 300 events during the 2008–2009 season. This nationally recognized performing arts center will continue to impact the Tampa Bay area with the most diverse and exceptional programming, on-site and off-site, for years to come.

Plans consist of a renovation which will include a grand lobby, concession areas and restrooms for the Theatre. During the 2008–2009 season, Ruth Eckerd Hall booked a series of prerenovation concerts in this intimate space including artists ranging from Amos Lee and William Joseph to Kenny Vance and the Planotones. Ruth Eckerd Hall on the Road continues to provide excellent programming throughout the community as well. During 2008, the programming department joined forces with major league baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays to book a total of nine post-game concerts, including Big and Rich, Ludacris, Daughtry, the B52’s and others. These concerts provided a new dimension to the games, and served as another way to bring the best entertainment to the Tampa Bay community.
