Dear Resident, December has crept up on us again and Fulham lies firmly in winter’s icy grip. The Journal is here to ward off the cold and provide tidings of comfort and joy in the form of an edition that features an ‘advent calendar’ round-up of the best festive events and a feel-good piece looking at those who spend Christmas Day serving the community. Meanwhile, William Monroe finds out about a unique riverside pop-up featuring heated igloos, curling lanes and a whole lot of fondue. Elsewhere, we catch up with French interior designer Emmanuelle Sirven and shed light on the latest lighting designs to keep things bright and cosy in the home. PALACE PATRON Fulham Palace is set to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall as its new Patron. Fulham FC has kicked off plans to redevelop the Riverside Stand at Craven Cottage. Working with renowned architectural and design firm Populous, the club hopes to submit the new stadium plans for permission by the end of the year. s a working mum, I know just how important good quality childcare is. It’s a child’s early years which set the foundation for their future health and happiness. That’s why we’ve launched our Big Childcare Conversation, Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s largest ever consultation on the subject. It will give everyone using or providing childcare for under 12s the chance to have their say. Hammersmith & Fulham Council has an ambitious aim to ensure that everyone in the borough has a stake in its prosperity and that no one is left behind. For many families that means access to affordable, reliable childcare. Being a parent is hugely rewarding, but it can also be challenging, especially for those who work as well. We want to do all we can to support parents and by filling out our survey, you can help us do that. Hammersmith and Fulham has some fantastic nurseries and childminders, but too many people are struggling to find a place that suits them. We need to think bigger and better. So we’ve launched a genuine and open debate on what we can do to improve things.

To fix a problem, you have to understand it first. That’s why first-hand experiences from the people using local services, or struggling to find a place, are essential. The door is open, so if you want to change things, we need you to take part. I’m often amazed by the passion and dedication shown by staff and volunteers and by the many fantastic projects run by schools, charities,

For most, Christmas Day is a time for celebrating with family and eating an egregious amount of food – but what of those who spend the day working? The Journal chats to three such hardy souls THE POLICE OFFICER Meet Fulham’s guardian angel, inspector Sarah King, who will be keeping SW6 safe until dawn. Spare a thought for inspector Sarah King of the Metropolitan Police. While the majority of the borough are tucked up in bed after a revelry filled day featuring far too much food and drink, she’ll be heading up Emergency Response Team D for Hammersmith & Fulham Borough during the night shift between 10pm and 7am on Boxing Day. Having been in the police for 14 years, Sarah has worked shifts on a number of Christmas Days, so for her it’s business as usual, albeit with a slightly festive twist. “We’re the only ones on duty so we have responsibility for the whole borough,” she says. “The main things we end up dealing with at Christmas are anti-social behaviour, where people have had quite a lot to drink, plus things like burglaries. Because people are away from their families at Christmas we try and get everyone to bring in different food items. It depends

how busy we are as to whether we even get a break, but hopefully it will be nice and peaceful.” Sarah does however find time to celebrate with family during the day, before her shift begins in the evening. “I’m quite lucky as my family lives nearby,” she explains. “So I’ll be able to have Christmas dinner, then a nap in the afternoon and come to work.” While her role in charge of the team usually means Sarah spends most of the shift at the station, she does try to get out on

patrol if time allows. “It’s a different kind of feeling when you’re driving around on Christmas Day. If you see other emergency services, you stop and say hello. There’s a nice community feeling when you’re out on the streets and noone else is around.”

THE VICAR The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day routine of Stuart Lees, vicar of ChristChurch Fulham, involves worship, quality time with family and friends and a glass of port. Stuart Lees has been the vicar of ChristChurch Fulham for 20 years now, but his enthusiasm for the Christmas Day service remains undiminished. “I find that the message and the story is always fresh,” he says with vigour. “I never get bored of it, I absolutely love it.” Festive celebrations in the Lees household have their genesis in midnight communion on Christmas Eve. “We normally have a nice meal with friends beforehand,” Stuart tells me. “Then we all go over to church, celebrate communion, then it’s back home for some port. Father

the ones I love are the classics: Once in Royal David’s City, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Silent Night. As long as I get to sing those I’m happy!” For Stuart, celebration and worship on Christmas Day are inextricably linked. “Worshipping at Christmas is like the central spoke on the wheel of a bicycle. If you take that out, all of the other bits fall apart. Food is just food and drink is just drink, you have that throughout the year. When you’ve got the central piece of celebrating Christ, everything seems to fit together.”

THE LIFEBOAT CREW MEMBER Natalie Adams of Chiswick Lifeboat Station is hoping to get her fill of food and Christmas films, even though she’s ready to launch a lifeboat in under 90 seconds.

Christmas then puts his presents under the tree and in stockings. It’s a really fun, family ritual. The next morning, we go to church and come back for a big Christmas lunch with the family.” Stuart explains that ChristChurch is an informal and family-friendly church that places an emphasis on celebration and worship. “There’s a lot of music,” he says. “It’s a bit of a party atmosphere in church on Christmas morning. There are lots of children, so we’ll do a Christmas quiz with sweets and prizes. We also sing a lot of songs, which we call worship. For me that’s probably the best bit of Christmas Day, the opportunity to let your heart sing out to God and Jesus.” Does Stuart have a favourite carol? “I’m not actually a massive carol fan, but

“Eating food, lots and lots of food,” is Natalie Adams’ response when I ask her what role she’ll be fulfilling when manning Chiswick Lifeboat Station on Christmas Day. “I’ve only worked one Christmas before,” she continues, “but I have colleagues who have been called out on Christmas Day. It’s more of a chilled day than we’d normally have. It is basically eat a ton of food and watch Christmas films together.” If the four-person team, made up of two full-time staff and two volunteers, gets a call out, then Natalie will be ‘number two seat,’ in charge of communications and navigation. She’s often helm

(commander) of the boat, but this year her colleague Glen will have the role on Christmas Day. Neither Natalie or Glen, the two full-time staff scheduled to work the Christmas Day shift, will be able to celebrate with family, as they hail from outside of London. “Glen’s from Norfolk and I’m from Kent,” Natalie explains. “So we stay up here for our block of four days. But I’m going to have a Christmas Day celebration at home with my family before I come up to work on Christmas Eve.” Food isn’t the only source of fuel when it comes to sustaining the festive spirit. “We always decorate the station, the tackier the better,” Natalie laughs. “It’s amazing that we have guys who give up their time voluntarily to work over Christmas. The best bit of the job is the banter and the camaraderie with your colleagues.”

CALENDAR The Journal rounds up the best festive events this December, including a Christmas market, a wreath-making workshop, carol singing and unique themed parties

Walking in a Winter

( wonder )land The Journal meets one half of the mother and daughter team stirring up a wintry storm in SW6 with their latest pop-up, Winterland London

t

o understand the concept of Winterland London, you first have to delve back into the past to Neverland London, the riverside drinking and dining pop-up that became Fulham’s top summer party destination between May and September this year. The pop-up experience, which the Journal had the pleasure of reviewing, was founded by mother and daughter team Rachel and Grace Hutson.

When I manage to track a busy Grace down, she explains to me that they plan to use the space next to Wandsworth Bridge – formerly home to Fulham Motor Auction – as a seasonal pop-up ( for how long depends on a proposed residential housing project), hence why Neverland has now morphed into Winterland, a seasonal take on its summery predecessor where the cocktails flowed

and Fulham locals flocked to soak up the sun, music and relaxed vibes. “I’ve been working in events for the past five years now,” Grace tells me, when I ask how she hit upon the idea. “I’ve done lots of private and corporate events. That street food vibe started to kick off a few years ago and got me really interested in the concept and bringing something like that to west London. I decided to quit my job and started up my own street food stall at a pop-up to get experience. Then I started searching for a site. Obviously the spaces are really hard to find – I basically drove around west London looking for spaces that I thought had potential. I drove over Wandsworth Bridge Road and saw the site and it went from there.”


[LIFESTYLE] Winterland, which runs until 22 December, has brought the festive atmosphere to Fulham. Key features include an ‘enchanted forest’, replete with 200 Christmas trees, heated lodges (which will be recognised as the former beach huts by Neverland veterans), three heated igloos, minigolf, table tennis tables, an enclosed and heated pergola, a stretch tent with fur-lined sofas and what are arguably the pièces de résistance: four neon-lit curling lanes. Food options are provided by a pizza stall and street food specialist Jimmy’s Lodge, who will be serving the likes of wild boar and apple hot dogs. “The igloos are available to hire,” Grace explains.

“I basically drove around west London looking for spaces that I thought had potential” “You can bring in your own drink and purchase your food from Jimmy’s Lodge or the pizza stall, or you can hire them out as a fondue igloo, so you have a special three-course fondue meal. The curling lanes are incredibly popular, everyone loves them.” Running the business jointly with her mum Rachel is generally a positive experience, but there are hurdles to overcome. There’s a pause from the other end of the telephone, then a laugh, when I ask whether Grace

enjoys working alongside her, but when the response does come she opts to be diplomatic. “I do love working with her, but as with any professional relationship there are the occasional tough times,” she laughs. “You have differing thoughts on how things should be done, but the good thing about family is you have an argument

and it’s forgotten in seconds. One thing we do have is quite similar taste in aesthetics, so that’s quite pleasant. She’s very experienced in the hospitality world as well, as she’s run hotels, restaurants and a nightclub.” One key difference to Neverland is the introduction of a licensed bar, serving the likes of mulled wine and hot winter cocktails alongside the usual suspects. On Wednesday and Saturday, the venue operates an alcoholic bar only, with no additional drinks allowed, but it reverts back to ‘BYOB’ on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, days on which the bar will continue to operate. What’s next then for the thriving seasonal pop-up? “Our plan is to hopefully keep it going as long as we can,” Grace replies. “It’s an adventure for us, as it’s up in the air as to what’s going to happen with the residential project. No one has a definitive answer for us. But ticket sales have just been crazy for Winterland, so it’s really exciting. There’s not much like this around, so it’s nice to be able to cater to the local community.” Tickets from £5. ON THE RISE The founder of Sweet Elements, Fulham-ite Faye Palmqvist, tells us why she swapped suits for chef whites and launched her own dessert catering company william monroe

You quit a marketing job to train as a pastry chef, you must have always had a passion for it?

winner. I’m afraid I don’t give away my recipes and secret ingredients – you’ll have to order it to try it out!

From a very young age I liked to help my mother – who is a fantastic cook – bake and that’s where it all started. For some reason I never thought of pursuing a career in the food sector. I worked in marketing for 12 years and baking was just a hobby on the side. Three years ago though I decided to quit my day job and swap suits and heels for chef whites and steel toe clogs: it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey.

What are your creations inspired by?

How many staff do you employ? As my business is fairly new, it’s just me for the moment, so every creation has been made by myself !

And where did the idea come from to found Sweet Elements? After I graduated from Le Cordon Bleu, I worked at the Savoy Hotel for a brief time. I realised that, having worked for other people for so many years, I wanted to be my own boss. That’s when I decided to start looking into opening my own dessert catering company.

Talk us through the masterclasses you’re set to launch. Sweet Elements will be launching cake and cookie decorating workshops in

A lot of the cakes I make at the moment are for children, so those creations are inspired by children’s toys or cartoons. My new line of cakes that I’ll be launching in 2018 are inspired by some of the latest cake trends, my love for flowers, abstract art, simplicity and design.

What do you like about Fulham as an area? Fulham and surrounding areas in the first quarter of 2018. There will be a selection of classes to choose from, including traditionally decorated cakes and trendy show-stoppers.

Do you get any quirky, bespoke requests? A few months ago I created a skull cake that was covered in more than 1,000 edible diamonds! On the whole though, most of the requests aren’t that outlandish, it’s

more about bringing my clients’ ideas to life. I love a challenge and I like to push the boundaries.

What’s your showstopper/signature cake? Are there any secret ingredients? I would definitely say my most popular cake is a chocolate fudge cake. It’s my number one seller and chocolate is definitely a

ou can’t beat a meal at an Italian restaurant. But Vicino isn’t just any Italian. It’s one of Fulham’s finest. And it’s popular with local residents too, as I discover during a three-course meal; the gentleman on the next table declares he’s been coming here for years. As soon as I arrive, the front of the eatery has a holiday home vibe with its wall frescoes, bright paint, vintage Italian posters and crockery hanging from the walls. I tuck into the thin Italian breadsticks – a classic table staple. For starters, I opt for the calamari and courgette strips. It’s lightly fried giving the perfect bite to the squid and, served with accompanying tartar, it’s oh-so moreish. A classic spag bol is next on the cards for mains. The spaghetti is cooked al dente and the ragu is rich, giving lots of

eat, drink and be merry A one-of-a-kind dining and drinking concept has taken over Lillie Road. The Prince consists of four restaurants, two bars, an enclosed woodland pergola garden and 800 seats. The former Prince of Wales pub and four disused connecting buildings have been transformed into an interconnecting venue by Incipio Group, the team behind Pergola on the Roof and Pergola Paddington Central. The current restaurants are Patty & Bun, MAM, Begging Bowl Canteen and Rabbit, although the pop-up eateries will rotate. FRENCH FEELING

We catch up with Fulham-based interior designer Emmanuelle Sirven to find out all about her latest projects, including a five-level house and a mini-spa

S

ince the Journal last caught up with Emmanuelle Sirven in December 2016, the French interior designer has been keeping busy – most notably in her advisory role for Parisian furniture giants Silvera, who opened a flagship showroom on King’s Road this summer. “They’re the main furniture supplier for interior designers and architects in Paris,” Emmanuelle explains. “I know Paul and Brigitte Silvera, the owners. They’re very successful in Paris and I’ve worked with them before, so when they contacted me I was very excited. Jouin Manku – who designed the Silvera Wagram shop in Paris – and a local architect were in charge of the concept, planning application and technical drawings. I was in charge of representing Silvera for meetings, as they are based in Paris, and helping them with translations and understanding UK regulations and technical issues. I also designed the kitchen and bathroom with suppliers they represent. Sometimes I meet with my clients here, so they get a feel for the furniture and the fabric. It’s a working place for me too. Emmanuelle is currently working on a five-level house in Ladbroke Square, Notting Hill, with the introduction of light and unity as the main aims. Working alongside an architect, she decided

to create a new open staircase, using timber for the steps, with the same timber replicated in the kitchen to create unity throughout and the effect of one big space. “You need to bring perspective,” Emmanuelle says. “Before the lower ground floor was very dark, so we opened two big windows looking out on to the rear garden. I have an affinity with nature and natural light. I redesigned the kitchen so it’s now overlooking the garden and it will have a green focus, with green-painted cabinets as well as plant pots both inside and outside in the garden.

Having recently completed a redesign of an office in High Street Kensington, Emmanuelle is also working on a smaller project in Notting Hill, an upgrade of a bathroom for a property in Tavistock Crescent. She’s also drawing up plans for a glass massage shed/mini spa with garden views at a countryside house in her native France. The two projects encapsulate Emmanuelle’s eclectic services, namely her ability and willingness to undertake small, bespoke projects alongside major office and house restorations. When it comes to top tips for interior design for a home, practicality, light and perspective are Emmanuelle’s watchwords. “I once lived in a house where I was on the first floor of a courtyard and couldn’t see the sky,” she tells me. “I felt like I was in a cage.” Her cage metaphor embodies her own design preferences and is linked to her multifaceted and unique approach to her work: for her, there are neither cages nor constraints. 22 Dawes Road, SW6 7EN, 07748 098 578, emmanuellesirven.com

eeping up with highlights is hard work, especially as one gets older. Not only do the roots grow out, but so does the grey. This means that it’s absolutely vital to stay on top of the routine six-to-eight-week appointments, a beauty timetable that I sometimes find hard to commit to. Luckily, help is at hand locally at Hari’s, which has recently launched a Colour Perfection Bar, meaning Fulham residents can perfect the damage of any colour mishaps from brassy highlights or botched up balayages. Led by senior creative colourist Francesca Dixon, it’s a 10-strong team, meaning that your dream hair squad is right on the doorstep. I’m welcomed into Hari’s buzzing salon, Francesca greets me and we start the consultation. I feel my hair has become somewhat dull and lacklustre recently and I’m in need of an uplift. She reassures me and tells me how she’s going to break up the colour with two hues using foils. After having balayage for the last year, I’m already eager to see the results. I forget how long it takes to do a full head of highlights though – especially given that my hair is long and thick – but I keep

Over-straightening and using heated hair appliances means that my locks have definitely become a bit frazzled and so I’m happy to see the ends chopped off. Top UK chandler Rachel Vosper has been signed up to create a “bespoke scent package” for the development, while the project is also delivering some new retail and restaurant space via a creek-side piazza.

In contrast to other parts of the capital, buyer demand has remained strong in Fulham throughout 2017, with a healthy average of 18 buyers registered for every property we have for sale. In particular, the Peterborough and Moore Park estates, Hurlingham and the ‘Alphabet Streets’ always attract strong interest and this will inevitably continue in the New Year. January is traditionally a busy month due to New Year’s resolutions to move or purchase a new home. Indeed, our buyer register increased by 42 per cent last January following the quieter Christmas period. With

last month’s base rate increase now at the forefront of people’s minds, and potentially several more in the coming years, we expect a particularly strong influx of buyers either starting or resuming their searches, and anticipate this to grow throughout Q1 2018. As Brexit negotiations continue, and the dust begins to settle on the turbulent times we’ve seen in the prime London property market, buyers’ confidence in the market is returning. The pool of buyers in the New Year looks to be plentiful, so for those looking to sell, now is the time to prepare your property.

2017 has been an interesting year for the Fulham property market. Activity levels were far better than we had seen for much of the previous year, but then the snap General Election really set the cat amongst the pigeons and the uncertainty around Brexit (hard Brexit, soft Brexit or no deal at all) raised its head again. Coupled with this, continued speculation around stamp duty reforms
