Fulham C ro ss Girl s’ Sc ho o l i s giving wings to i t s pupil s’ aspirations Fulham Cross Girls’ School students reflected on the role of women in society through a tribute on 6 February to mark 100 years of votes for women. The vision and ethos of the school is to ‘Empower Tomorrow’s Women’. Having the chance to participate in activities that stretch, challenge and enthuse raises the students’ aspirations, and a recent visit to Oxford University gave the Challenge Club motivation to aim high in terms of their future studies and career paths. Students from across the school were equally inspired by the latest guest speaker from the Empower Breakfast programme, Major Harriet Church of the Household

P

arsons Green Prep School recently teamed up with the Chelsea FC Foundation, with the aim of providing high-quality football coaching to boys and girls across all year groups at the school. The partnership, which is a first among prep schools in Fulham, has turned out to be a massive hit with children and parents alike. The Chelsea FC Foundation was formed in 2010 and brings together the Football in the Community and the Education department, along with the club’s other charitable and community activities, including environment and anti-discrimination projects. It provides outstanding coaches who are experienced, highly qualified, passionate, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about football, the most played and most watched sport worldwide. The children have sessions with the coaches twice a week at Hurlingham Park, as well as after-school clubs three days a week for all age groups on the school’s own AstroTurf pitch. The children are learning various ball skills, including passing and dribbling, and playing small-sided games. The coaches

also attend curriculum games lessons for Key Stage 2 and a few children were invited to train with the Chelsea FC Foundation squad at one of its coaching centres. These children were then coached and checked on regularly to monitor their progress, with a view to advancing to academy level. Through its relationship with the Foundation, Parsons Green Prep has also been invited to two tournaments at Cranleigh Preparatory School with ex-Chelsea and England international Graeme Le Saux, where they had fantastic days out and picked up silver medals in 2017. The school also fielded a girls’ Under-11 squad at a recent ISA tournament at LVS Ascot. Despite this being the girls’ first-ever competition, they ended up winning the U11 category. The school’s head of sport, Mr Will, is now busy building on this big improvement in the children’s

Murder, She

wrote Fulham resident and writer Elizabeth S Moore discusses the constraints of modern day society and her provocative debut novel, which is set to hit the shelves in April william monroe

A

chilly Monday morning finds me seeking an entrance to the Club at the Ivy, a glamorous yet discreet private members’ club which is a popular haunt of the A-list London film, music and media set. However, celeb spotting is not on the agenda: I’m here to meet writer, journalist and Fulham resident Elizabeth Moore, whose provocative debut novel The Man on the Middle Floor is set to hit the shelves – and the realms of online bookstores – in April. Over coffee and the crooning of Celine Dion in the bar, Elizabeth explains that the novel has essentially been a lifetime in the making. Her profession as a journalist means that writing has always been a prevalent part of her life, but juggling a career alongside raising four children had hitherto put novel plans on hold. Embarking on a Faber Academy novel-writing course proved to be the catalyst for Elizabeth to pick up the pen. Key motifs in her novel include disconnection – whether that be emotional, physical or societal – and the

way in which we relate to those with autism. Nick, the book’s protagonist, is a young man with Asperger syndrome, who lives on the middle floor of a three-flat house in a London suburb. His neighbours, all strangers to one another, are Tam, an ex-police officer who’s turned to the bottle

elizabeth with her husband gerry

and Karen, a doctor and researcher who has dedicated her life to researching rising rates of autism. “It’s a thriller but with a lot of social commentary,” says Elizabeth. “Like a lot of people on the autism spectrum, Nick has a very set routine. He goes to the same place at the same time on a certain day. When he gets to the place where he usually feeds the ducks, some people are there having sex. He gets very upset. Autistic people

lifestyle

don’t have very good ways of going round things, they tend to go through things and get very easily thrown. So he bashes them over the head with a large piece of wood.” The man on the middle floor has become a murderer, and events quickly spiral out of control. Some agents and publishing houses shied away from the book. A man with Asperger’s committing murder is a potentially controversial topic, particularly given the ongoing – and increasingly febrile – debate in the press and wider society regarding what qualifies as offensive and whether our right to be offended trumps the right to freedom of expression and speech. “It is quite out-there,” Elizabeth admits. “People said to me, ‘the central character is really great, but could you maybe make him not autistic.’ But that is the entire point of the book. I fought very hard to hang on to the characters and the themes. There are so many things you can’t talk about, that are out of bounds. As a journalist, I find it really disconcerting that you can’t

have a conversation. I’m not passing a judgement; I just think these things should at least be able to be discussed. You don’t grow as a person if you don’t ever hear a different opinion. Nick to me is the most sympathetic character. He doesn’t kill because he’s a bad person, he kills because he doesn’t know what else to do in certain situations.” Elizabeth is particularly interested in exploring the autonomy of the individual, a subject she talks engagingly about and at some length. With autism diagnosis rates at an all-time high in our society, the novel questions the constraints that modern conformity seeks to place on those on the spectrum. Nick seeks to cast off these shackles and arguably stands for individuality, but he can find no succour within a society obsessed with normality and adhering to the status quo. She also draws a parallel between the rise of autism and the widening

social chasm among friends, families and communities in a digital age where computers and smartphones often take precedence over face-to-face interaction. “I’ve got children from 34 down to 19,” she tells me. “Although they seem to have all these ways of connecting with each other, Twitter and everything under the sun, they don’t actually connect. Everyone’s got about 3,000 friends on Facebook, but there’s so little of what we would have regarded as sitting and having a conversation. We all seem to be galloping in completely the wrong direction.” As Elizabeth is a west Londoner at heart – she’s called Fulham home since 1983 – the landscape of the area features heavily in the book. “The killing’s in Richmond Park. I hope Richmond Park doesn’t complain,” she laughs. “There’s the King’s Road, a little bit of The Hurlingham Club, it’s all set in south west London.” Her own favourite Fulham hang-outs include the White Horse (“just because my children will always be found in there”), Bishop’s Park and a number of the restaurants in World’s End. “I like the whole area actually,” she continues. “I love Sapori Sardi on the Fulham Road – if you’re ever trying to impress somebody the lobster spaghetti is the nicest thing in London and it’s cheap as chips.” When it comes to writing techniques, Elizabeth again doesn’t adhere to convention in terms of repairing to a writer’s retreat. “I know everyone’s supposed to have some solitary writing technique, I don’t have that,” she chuckles. “We have a property business as well and I can quite happily write in the office. I can be writing some awful scene, pick the phone up, and then carry on. That may well be because I’ve got four kids and a husband: you get used to being able to multi-task and that part of your brain not shutting down. I would love to say I’m one of these people who has to go to a cottage in the Hebrides, but I actually am terrible by myself.” The Man on the Middle Floor will retail at £8.99. Available in major bookshops from 12 April and for pre-order from amazon.co.uk. To find out more, visit elizabethsmoore.com

UNADULTERATED EXCELLENCE Pure Indian Cooking is the unheralded gem that you need to visit now WILLIAM MONROE

P

ure Indian Cooking looks unassuming from the outside. Nestled on Fulham High Street, just around the corner from Putney Bridge station, the compact restaurant features simple, unprepossessing décor. Pure is a perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. It’s full on a Saturday evening when my friend and I pay a visit and locals clearly know the deal. The food here by chef-owner Shilpa Dandekar – formerly a head chef for Raymond Blanc – is consistently excellent. Poppadoms appear as the warmup act, before I opt for the strawberry scallops with fresh mint and rhubarb ginger chutney to start with, washed down by a glass of Wakefield Estate Clare Valley chardonnay. The dish is beautifully presented and has the tastes to match: the scallops are fleshy, flavoursome and dovetail wonderfully with the strawberry – an unusual and bold pairing but one that’s pulled off with aplomb. My friend’s coriander and goat’s cheese samosas are, again, well presented and are served alongside mint, tomato and beetroot chutneys. I can’t resist a

dipping taster session and they rival the scallops. We’re also furnished with one of the house specialities, patra chaat, featuring colocasia leaves served with yoghurt, date and tamarind chutney, pomegranate, onion and tomato. Again, it’s an absolute feast of subtle flavours and spices. Mains – and another glass of chardonnay – are eagerly awaited, and my tandoori duck breast with spiced

apricot chutney and tamarind sauce is arguably the pièce de résistance of a fabulous array of dishes. The barbary duck is cooked rare and is as tender as it looks. Although I’m too occupied with my duck to steal a taste of my friend’s baingan bharta, which is roasted aubergine cooked with diced tomato, onion, cumin and ginger, she’s similarly effusive in her praise. Dessert proves to be a bridge too far for both of us after such an excellent evening’s eating. If you’re yet to experience Pure, paying a visit is a must. Shilpa’s home-style Indian recipes with an inventive twist result in refined dishes that are superbly presented. The prices are fantastically reasonable, the service friendly yet unobtrusive and the quality of food unstintingly good. Be sure to head off the beaten track and treat your taste buds. 67 Fulham High Street, SW6 3JJ, 020 7736 2521, pureindiancooking.com

hummus hit

The founder of ethical hummus company ChicP is savouring success, two years after she started the business from her kitchen in Fulham WILLIAM MONROE

S

ome of the world’s most successful companies originated in the humblest surroundings. One of Nike’s co-founders, Phil Knight, began business from his father’s basement and peddled shoes from the back of his car. Apple, Amazon and Google all started in garages and the concept of Facebook was dreamed up in Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm room. In Hannah McCollum’s case, the former private chef and caterer started her company ChicP from the confines of her own kitchen in SW6. Two years on and her ethical hummus products, made from leftover raw vegetables unwanted by supermarkets, are flying off the shelves at the likes of Selfridges, Whole Foods Market and Fortnum & Mason, while they’re also stocked online at Amazon Fresh. When it comes to a personal favourite she hesitates – “I go through phases” – but eventually settles on carrot, ginger and turmeric. Sustainability and ethics are watchwords for Hannah, who’s passionate about the issue of food waste. Although she currently gets her vegetables from large wholesalers, she initially sourced vegetables directly from farmers and is keen to go back to those roots. Other plans in the pipeline include a range of non-hummus products – for now Hannah’s keeping those particular cards close to her chest – and a desire to one day open a ChicP café. Hannah’s certainly come a long way from a business that started out in her kitchen, utilising housemates as “taste buddies” and a trusty blender. 07788 474 803, chicp.co.uk

Good design is good design, regardless of where you are. The colour emphasis is different – I think there’s much more use of colour in certain areas in America and a passion for blue. Blue is a great colour at the moment.

K ICK Meet the health and lifestyle coach who’s outfoxing supermarkets – and is here to kick your bad habits into touch WILLIAM MONROE

I’

m chatting to holistic health and lifestyle coach, Milla Lascelles, over a glass of water ( filtered of course) in the kitchen of her home on Mendora Road, Fulham. It’s the very epitome of an oasis of calm. It’s fair to say she really knows her stuff. Having become passionate about holistic health after health issues with family and friends, Milla knows firsthand the effects stress can have on daily routines and health, after a hectic threeyear period working in events, sustained by Red Bull, coffee, convenience foods, and, on some occasions, as little as an hour’s sleep a night. A sabbatical in California proved to be the catalyst for Milla to commit herself to a healthier approach and a full-time career in the field of well-being. “I immersed myself in health and I felt so good,” she says. “It was nice to take a step back and reflect on what wasn’t working for me at home.” Feeling rejuvenated, Milla quit her job and started studying at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition – the largest nutritional school in the world. Two key philosophies that she espouses are the importance of primary nutrition – healthy

relationships, physical activity, a fulfilling career and self-care – and secondary nutrition; essentially the foods we eat. She offers six-week and 12-week programmes, which include weekly sessions at her home or a client’s house and unlimited email and phone access. “Initially I offer a consultation where we discuss lifestyle, health and goals,” she explains. “The whole thing is very supportive. It’s great seeing a nutritionist, but you go home and then you’re on your own. It’s important to get to the root cause of your self-sabotaging. It’s about introducing healthier habits, not restrictions, but you need support.” For those seeking a more immediate solution, Milla, who’s 26, also offers a luxury transformational day, where she visits clients to advise on healthy habits in the home. “We do a larder blitz,” she says. “I’ll educate them about how to read the labels and healthier alternatives. We’ll also go to their supermarket. I’ll teach them about the geography and how we’re patterned to make our way through. Then we

Milla, who is something of a food sleuth, says that the key is resisting supermarket seduction

implement a self-care routine.” Milla, who is something of a food sleuth, says that the key is resisting supermarket seduction. “It’s all there for you to consume, you have the grab zone at the end, which you reach for to treat yourself. You walk in and see the fresh bread, flowers and fruit and veg and immediately trust that everything is good for you. Clients also assume that if it’s freefrom food it’s healthy. But, for instance, if it’s low-fat, the fat has been replaced with sugar – it’s so much worse. It’s important to be savvy in the supermarket.” She recommends the Sugar Smart app, which can be used to scan product barcodes to see how many cubes of white sugar each item contains. I’m shocked to learn that a Heinz tomato ketchup bottle

lifestyle

(300ml) holds a staggering 28 sugar cubes. Other culprits include a 450g jar of Uncle Ben’s Sweet & Sour sauce ( formerly a favourite of mine) which hosts nine cubes. “There are so many misleading things,” Milla tells me. “It’s really important to understand how to read a label. You can deconstruct your cravings, if you’re eating a lot of sugary foods then you could look at having more sweet vegetables.” Milla finds that the majority of clients – most of whom hail from Fulham and Chelsea – come to her about stress, sleeping issues or sugar addiction. Mums attempting to juggle a busy career with family life make up a large proportion, although she has also started coaching men recently too. As well as providing lifestyle tips to her clients, she advocates a general natural approach, whether that be through the use of eco cleaning products or natural skin products and deodorants. A key component of Milla’s services is a relaxed approach. She also favours a pragmatic form of coaching in comparison to making holistic elements the focal point. “I think it’s got to be realistic. I also don’t subscribe to a deprived ‘clean diet’, or the regimented food and beauty contest that is played out online. When it comes to enviable avocados and touched-up torsos on Instagram, I steer clear. In fact, I’m more likely to suggest a digital detox.” Milla is full of recommendations when it comes to healthy foodie spots in the local area and St Clements Cafe and Hally’s are go-to options. Lentils, fish and mushrooms feature regularly on her shopping list, as well as Daylesford Château Léoube Organic Rosé Wine, which, according to Milla, negates many a Londoner’s chief bane: a weekend hangover. Ultimately, she’s keen to stress that there’s no one-size-fits-all-approach to healthy eating. “Everyone is different. One person’s food is another’s poison. Food is medicine. You can control how you feel, your energy, happiness. It is everything. My aim is to get clients’ bodies back to feeling how they’re meant to feel.”

For me grand and show-stopping often relates back to the volume of rooms or feeling of space in a property. This house we are marketing on Clonmel Road delivers that by the bucket-load. This is particularly evident in the basement, which is one of the best conversions I’ve seen in the area. The impressive ceiling heights and unique staircase layout create a space that is ready to be used day-to-day as an integral part of the house. The huge family/media room has bifold doors onto a terrace that leads up to the garden. There is also a study, a large bedroom with an en suite and an enormous laundry room. Originally designed by George Godwin and built during the early 1860s as part of the master plan for what is now known as the Boltons Conservation Area, 28 Tregunter Road has been completely rebuilt over the last three years to create an 8,000 square foot family home with integrated garaging. Conceived, designed and fully furnished by celebrated architect and interior designer Rabih Hage, the house has been built to exacting standards to deliver a period mansion with generous proportions, outstanding amenities and unparalleled family and entertaining space on one of the most desirable streets in Chelsea. Nick Stuttard, director at London Projects comments: “Twenty-eight Tregunter Road was a large and challenging project split over seven floors, including a double-level basement excavation with limited access for materials. It was vital our strong project management and surveying team worked closely with our site specialists in a proven delivery structure. “That set up, combined with our in-house mechanical and electrical departments, allowed the more complicated elements of the project such

as the pool and car stacker to be delivered seamlessly without affecting the main fit-out works. Steve Howat, director at London Projects also comments: “We worked closely with the client team to ensure the project was value-engineered to meet the client’s budget and programme, yet achieve the levels of quality expected in the super-prime market. We are proud of the end result and the strong relationships we have built with the professional team.”

that would not only take the weight but also allow the sliding wall to still be operable. 4. In order to allow sufficient light into the basement level and staff accommodation, it was critical to create a light well at the front of the property, space constraints meant that this was an incredibly narrow space – no more than 200cm wide and 7m deep. It was therefore not possible to erect scaffolding to plaster and finish this area, so it required some lateral thinking to provide access for the renderers.

viewpoint. It was not possible to block access to the mews, which was tricky as the road is very narrow. This created challenges with deliveries, and was especially difficult when installing the car stacker and double-storey car lift. 2. Given that the property is at an end of terrace location, with the protected arch to the rear, lack of garage space or available mews house – management of the delivery, storage and excavation of materials was incredibly challenging on this project. It required seamless project management, programme coordination and collaboration throughout. 3. One of the many unique and striking design features was a full-size, mirrored sliding wall to be installed in the basement pool area, which would reveal a hidden bar. This item alone was over 400kg in weight and required a specialist bespoke hanging system to be developed and constructed on site,

5. Typically, air handling units for this scale of property would be situated on the roof of the building or perhaps in the garage, but for this project this was not possible. It was therefore necessary for the units to be dismantled on site, a new location sourced and then the units rebuilt accordingly at basement level. This process involved creating suitable ventilation penetrations to atmosphere for some fairly sizable ductwork, which needed to be disguised and also act as a drain for surface water. All the while considering access for maintenance and cleaning. 6. Given the extent of the facilities, including lift, car lift, pool, sauna and steam room, it was necessary to find space for and create three separate plant rooms within the property, along with a separate boiler room and various Lutron panels and lift controls. 28 Tregunter Road is on the market with Strutt & Parker’s Knightsbridge office (contact: James Forbes on 020 7591 2201)
