lthough it doesn’t quite feel like spring as we press print on our March issue, and weather presenters announce the coldest week of the winter on the horizon, we at The Cheshire Magazine are ever the optimists and look forward with gusto to a new season. Jan Clarke investigates the key trends for our homes and interiors (p. 129), from mixed metallics to the new neutrals. Then there’s properties from around the world to inspire us, whether you fancy yourself as lord or lady of the manor or head honcho on the ranch (p. 140 and 146) and all the latest news and views from the world of interiors to inspire us to bring some sunshine into our homes. step-mum, future mum or the mum-like figure in your life. If you need some help we have asked all the mum’s in the office and beyond what their wishes would be and compiled a guide on page 98, but there’s more online so don’t forget to visit thecheshiremagazine.co.uk. You can also find inspiration in our news pages, from fashion to food and our new Family news page, thanks to Anjii Foxx and her fourlegged friend Mr Hendrix (p. 96). On the subject of family, David and Michael Irlam speak exclusively to us on page 26, about their business transformation from haulage to nuptials, working together and what makes them tick. And actress Shobna Gulati, embarkson her first animation and chats about the pressure of getting it right for the kids (p.100). Here’s to a season of new growth and inspiration...

My life in

CHESHIRE JOANNA SCOTT-ASPRAY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, CHESHIRE SOCIALITES

How would you describe yourself? A double shot of nice, a slice of genuine with a dash of ambition and flair. All finished off with a fun and happy garnish. Where is home? And work? I’m a Cheshire girl through and through... born in Knutsford and now live in Wilmslow. Home is work and work is home.

hollywood sign; Juan Camilo Bernal / Shutterstock.com Sagrada Familia, Barcelona; Haveseen/ shutterstock.com Evening View from The Edge at Alderley Edge; sue burton Photography ltd/ shutterstock.com

What did you want to be when you were younger? A Hollywood actress which is a little ironic, as I feel I’m the star of my own production now! Name a few of your favourite places to be? I’m a real culture vulture and I love museums and amazing buildings. But, I also enjoy anywhere exotic so there’s a vast difference in my favourite destinations. I love to relax in The Maldives and also really enjoy a cultural city like Barcelona. However, my most honest answer would be anywhere, as long as I was with my best friend and daughter, Frankii: that’s when I’m at my happiest. We really love a visit to The Edge at Alderley Edge.

Who/What inspires you? Strong, independent women inspire me. Women who stand together and support each other. I have a lot around me and so I’m truly blessed.

“I’m a Cheshire girl through and through, born in Knutsford and now living in Wilmslow”

What was the last gift you gave someone? A wine glass, personalised with ‘Hello beautiful’, for a good friend.

Tell us a secret/fun fact? I have quite a few! Many years ago, I was asked to be a Marilyn Monroe lookalike for a north west agency. Also, my first events job involved touring up and down the UK with Gladiators. And did I mention… I’m a trained wig maker? What’s been your biggest life lesson? Don’t put your life on hold for others. Always believe in yourself and go after your dreams and aspirations. I’m now finally living mine. (cheshiresocialites.co.uk) 17

Suffragette City The proposal to build a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst in Manchester has come an important step further, as plans have now been submitted to Manchester City Council by planning consultants Turley. The plans which were submitted on behalf of the Emmeline Pankhurst Statue Project, sets out the proposal to build a statue of the founder of the suffragette movement in Manchester’s St Peter’s Square. A countrywide campaign saw individuals and organisations backing the quest for the statue which will join Manchester’s 17 existing statues; and from a selection of six designs, a public vote selected sculptor Hazel Reeves ‘Rise up Women’ as the winning design. Parenthood Mum, property developer and resident coach Melissa Porter considers life as a parent: the good, the bad and the ugly

H

indsight is a wonderful thing. And, upon reflection, there are many things I wish I’d know about being a parent before I embarked upon this particular journey. Here is what I’ve learnt and would like to share: • Every child is born built with a guilt-inspiring emotional chip activated at the exact moment we reveal our plans for a night out on the town. Such anticipation appears to create resistance from kids and, I suspect, they’ve created a group WhatsApp to remind others to make us feel guilty about leaving them with a babysitter. Unless you’re leaving them with no food, no water and no carer – trust they’ll survive the next three hours without you. • The reason we’re unable to inspire our toddlers or young kids to eat fruit, veg and to avoid sugar is because we didn’t instil this from birth. Food habits are taught when we start their food adventure with solid food. They’re not born addicted to sugar, they develop a taste for it after we choose to offer them their first sweet treat bribe. • Children adore grandparents. Whatever differences you have with your parents, leave your kids to fully explore and enjoy this relationship - to make up their own opinions about how dysfunctional your childhood was and how lucky they are to have you as a rock-star parent.

why you need hour-long bubbly baths - rather than face the school run. • Anger coming from a child is to be supported by parents and carers as opposed to shut down. When supported, we are teaching our children they are valuable and that their voice counts. We inspire them to join the emotional dots when something triggers them and to create a new way of being. When we shut them down we are telling them it’s not OK to feel. We are telling them their feelings don’t matter and the effect is for them to become increasingly disconnected from what makes them feel alive. • There are no rule books for how to parent your unique child. If I were to write one it would include the following single rule: Love your child but first learn to love yourself. In the same way, we are told by flight attendants to first apply the oxygen masks to ourselves; apply this same rule to your life. Learn to get your needs met so with our overflowing happiness we can help others. We are unable to offer anything from an empty cup. Unless it’s one made by Bernardaud, then take it - and run. Melissa is a professional, certified transformational life coach (melissaportercoach.com)

• On the occasions I’m tired, I’m then unable to be anything else around my son while respecting my authenticity and need to be real. Hence self-care becomes a necessary selfless responsibility vs a selfish one. Explain to no-one

Business Louisa Castle speaks to brothers David and Michael Irlam as they explain how they made a successful business transformation from haulage to nuptials

olshaw Hall is one of the most soughtafter wedding venues in Cheshire and clearly, the pride of David Irlam and his family. “It took many years to build up Colshaw Hall, but we were able to do so thanks to our success in the transport business,” explains David. “Our family were all born in the Parish of Peover Superior and The Colshaw Hall Estate is pretty much at the heart of it [David’s three brothers’ and sisters’ homes all border the estate]. We are very fortunate and very proud to still live in the village we grew up in. “My wife Heather and I always said that Colshaw Hall was a great place to raise our children, Lucy, James and Georgina. When they flew the nest, we felt it was too big for just the two of us and, whilst we wanted to move to something smaller, we knew that we were not ready to let the hall go. That left us with the responsibility and the cost to consider as guardians of this GradeII-listed building. “The decision to go into weddings wasn’t taken lightly. We tirelessly researched what couples planning to marry were looking for from a venue; exclusive use; a country manor house; the ability to get married, celebrate and stay the night in one location; a building with heritage but with bright, fresh interiors. After that, we knew we had something to offer the more discerning couple. That’s not to say it wasn’t terrifying when we took our first booking in 2011 as we knew that 18

months later our first wedding was to take place, come what may, so there was no turning back. “My youngest daughter Georgina had been studying event management at college and so she took the reins beautifully, handling the events and making the wishes of couples come true. At the time, my eldest daughter, Lucy, was running her own beauty business and she also stepped into the wedding arena, using her people skills and exceptional attention to detail. Lucy now works alongside me taking care of the operational side of things and to keep it all ship-shape. “When we opened Colshaw Hall to the public, my son James launched a personal training gym on site (Colshaw Fitness) so we could we offer couples their dream venue and also get them in shape for the big day! In fact, our fitness clients really supported us, falling in love with Colshaw Hall, too, and booking it for their own corporate events and private parties. And to complete the family set up, my wife Heather was the brains behind keeping the interiors modern and fresh. She has a real flair for design which plays out in the expressions of the faces of those that come for a look around.” Whilst it is plain to see that Colshaw Hall is a family business through and through, David is keen to point out that there’s more to it. “It’s really important to say that we’re not just a family business ‘having a go’. We work with structured business plans, hold regular planning sessions and monitor feedback daily. We realised early on that we should supplement the family team with expertise from the local community, so we have people on site to take care of the marketing, accounts and more. We have handpicked our team and our superb suppliers, who are like an extended family. A good team is the best route to success and they help to take the pressure off! The support of the local community has been great, too. “The favourite thing about the job, though, is showing people around and seeing their

reaction as they step through each part of the estate for the first time. I’ll never tire of that and also to be working with my brother Michael and his wife, Suzanne again. It also gives me a buzz that you don’t know who you’re going to meet each day. It could be a TV celeb, an Olympian or a local family – each one is special. “One of the things that I didn’t account for was running out of dates to book. It was heartbreaking for couples and me when we had to turn people away. When word spread, there was simply not availability left. This is where, after chatting with my brother Michael that we realised there was the potential for another venue. “Michael and I worked together really well in the haulage company. I was in charge of the customers and he was in charge of operations. Once I had promised the earth then Michael did really deliver, so we knew it would be good to work together again!” Michael tells us more about the concept of Colshaw Hall’s sister, Merrydale Manor. “When we first viewed Merrydale Manor it was in a sorry state. The house was a derelict farm building which had seen better days. But this did not deter my wife, Suzanne and me. as we could see

the massive potential of this stunning site. The house was situated in the most beautiful setting with sweeping driveway, an abundance of natural features in rolling countryside and the focal point was a spectacular lake. It took three years to transform, but we knew that we had created the perfect family home. “During our time there we formed Peover Polo Club (Merrydale Manor has its own HPA registered pitch) and the grounds really lend themselves to this. Over the years, we have hosted many charity, corporate and team building events with polo at the centre. When people attend, they often comment on the ‘wow factor’ that Merrydale Manor has, so opening it as a wedding venue, alongside the corporate side of things was an easy decision. When I spoke to David about this, it just confirmed that corporate/polo events alongside weddings, was the right way to go.” The brothers agree that working together again was the ideal way forward. Michael continues, “Working with David again really was a no-brainer. He had created a great team at Colshaw Hall, so when we did venture into weddings, we were able to hit the ground running as we had experience at our fingertips. Plus, we were able to avoid the pitfalls when you’re starting a business from scratch. As our wives will tell you, work has never been a chore for us. Both David and I love it and are proud of what we have generated. “Suzanne and I also worked together in the transport business in the early days and working together again is great. You spend so much time at work that to do so with your family is a dream come true. Suzanne has a nice way with people and likes to keep everywhere ‘just right’, so we do most of the viewings of the estate and we’re so proud to show couples our family home. [The family is moving to another home at Easter so that guests can now stay in the manor house as an option.] It’s great to see something that you’ve created through their eyes. I like making people happy so delivering to them what we’ve promised is important to me and working alongside my family is important, of course!

Since we transformed Merrydale Manor into an event venue, I feel like I’ve got my ‘buzz’ back. “My daughter Hattie is also really loving working in the industry. She had a good grounding as she studied business at Macclesfield College in order to apply herself to our family businesses, but I think that it’s in the wedding and event industry that she’s finding her niche. Hattie is currently working with the team over at Colshaw Hall to develop her role in event coordination and marketing. “Part of the success of both wedding venues is that we are all normal, approachable people. As a family, we are really hands-on too. We also treat every wedding as individual and as important as the last. I always think to myself ‘Would I be happy with that for my own daughter?’ “For the future, I see us consolidating for now and perfecting what we have. We are so aware that there are many other high-quality wedding venues in Cheshire, so we will not be complacent going forward. I love having a vision, making it happen and then being the best in class.” David concludes my interview, “We’re now seven years in and, to be honest, we’ve never looked back. Yes, it’s been hard work and we still work hard to keep it at the top but it’s a nice industry to

work in because you’re constantly meeting people with a smile on their face and sharing arguably the most important day of their life. “Time moves on, of course, and the Colshaw Hall business has spawned another couple of its own. Georgina has teamed with life-long friend Megan Warburton to form Irlam Warburton Events (they now plan events at both venues and beyond) and Colshaw Hall Fitness led to James opening a second venue, Knutsford Gym. “It wasn’t always easy but we do consider ourselves lucky and we know we had a head start. We get to keep our family home and have set up a business for the children and the next generation. Rather than blood, sweat and tears looking after the house, it’s now looking after me! But above all, we really like the industry and believe we’re in it for life. Our plan for the future is to simply stay in the premier division for weddings.” To arrange a show around of Colshaw Hall and Merrydale Manor please call 01565 724060 or visit colshawhall.com or merrydalemanor.com

MAESTRO Natalie Anglesey meets Sir Cameron Mackintosh and friends for lunch

M

y meeting with Sir Cameron Mackintosh took place in The Ivy. Heads turned as we entered because my host is one of the most powerful theatre producers in the world. As Cameron introduces me to the gentlemen on either side of me as simply Claude-Michel (Schönberg) and Alain (Boublil), for once in my life I’m speechless. This is the creative duo, not only responsible for the hugely popular Les Misérables, but also the equally stunning Miss

Saigon. I can’t remember eating anything as I barrage my fellow guests with questions. Cameron explains that when he first heard the French concept album Les Misérables, he approached Claude-Michel and Alain about transforming it into a stage musical. “When I asked them about the initial inspiration, they told me it was Victor Hugo’s book - but the impetus was watching another of my shows - Oliver!” Cameron worked closely with them again on Miss Saigon. It opened in the West End in 1989 and was a major success while the Broadway

production achieved what was then the largest advance ticket sales in theatre history. “It’s a very powerful love story,” Cameron enthuses. “Parallels have been drawn with Madame Butterfly, but this is set in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and, like Les Misérables, is an uplifting story of self-sacrifice.” When I saw the spectacular New York production, with an audience of many who had personal experience of that war, you could hear the muffled sobs of the audience culminating in a long standing ovation. I’ve often wondered where Cameron’s enduring passion for theatre came from. Born in London, the son of a Scottish timber merchant and his Maltese wife, there was always music in the house. The New York Times once described

him as ‘the most successful, influential and powerful theatrical producer in the world.’ In 2014, he was the first British producer to be inducted into Broadway’s American Theater Hall of Fame, the same year he re-launched Miss Saigon at the Prince Edward Theatre in London, celebrating 25 years since its first launch. I first met Cameron when he was a fledgling producer who used to chide me for giving him less than kind reviews. Since then, he’s tried to ensure that I’m also there for most of his triumphs. He confided then he had known he wanted to become a producer when he was only eight years old. “My mother and aunt took me to a matinée of Julian Slade’s Salad Days. I must have been a precocious child because when I heard Julian played the piano at that performance, I insisted on meeting him. He kindly took me on stage to show me how the magic piano worked and I knew this is what I wanted to do. Years later I produced that show - so a boyhood dream came true!” Cameron seriously began his theatre career in his late teens, as a stagehand at London’s Theatre Royal, and rose to giddy heights as an assistant stage manager in several touring productions. “At one time I thought of becoming an actor,” he grins. “In fact I made my debut on stage at the Manchester Opera House where, as an assistant stage manager in Lionel Bart’s Oliver! I had to join the chorus and push the scenery around. I knew then I’d never be a star.”

32

Cameron began producing his own small tours, with varying degrees of success, before becoming a London-based producer in the 1970s. His early London productions included Anything Goes which he brought here to the Palace Theatre in 1969 before taking it into the West End where it closed after only two weeks. “I was devastated but learnt a valuable lesson. In spite of 16 glorious Cole Porter numbers, I knew the script was weak and I vowed I’d never make that mistake again.” In the 70s Cameron produced the hugely successful My Fair Lady and Side By Side By Sondheim. “Although he’s a genius, I was delighted that Stephen was as uncoordinated on stage as I was”, Cameron laughs. He went on to work successfully with Sondheim in Follies and

later Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The man they now call Mr Producer, was one of the first young producers to acknowledge Manchester as the number one touring venue it had been since the days of Ivor Novello. He’s brought most of his successful productions here, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. “Andrew and I get on like a house on fire,” Cameron tells me. “But like brothers, we scrap now and then. After the success of Cats, it only took him 18 months to write Phantom of the Opera. It starred his then wife Sarah Brightman but wasn’t written with Michael Crawford in mind. However, I knew the role needed to be performed by an actor who could sing rather than the other way round - and it was a huge success. It became the most commercially successful musical of all time out-grossing films such as Titanic and ET.”

It’s the show I really care about!” Happy with his partner of several years, Australian-born theatre photographer Michael Le Poer Trench, when Cameron’s not immersed in a production, they enjoy homes in London, Somerset and Scotland’s Nevis Estate. Never resting on past laurels, his most recent successes include Kinky Boots, which we’ll see here later this year, and his current success with the American musical Hamilton which has taken the West End by storm. What next for the busy impresario? “Well I’m looking forward to bringing Miss Saigon back to Manchester. It seems even more relevant today with refugees struggling to survive in the aftermath of war while those consumed by greed, make capital from their misery. It’s at the Palace Theatre where I’ve been lucky to enjoy so many successes. Manchester audiences have always been so kind to me in the past - even when the barricades in Les Mis broke down! This is a new, full-scale production of Miss Saigon, recently seen on Broadway, and it has the most incredible cast - I just hope you enjoy it.” Miss Saigon is at The Palace Theatre, 21 March to 12 May, 2018 (atgtickets.com)

“My mother and aunt took me to a matinee of Julian Slade’s Salad Days. I must have been a precocious child because when I heard Julian play the piano at that performance I insisted on meeting him.” In 1998, Cameron celebrated 30 years in show business with Hey, Mr Producer! - a charity gala concert, featuring songs from his shows and which was attended by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Always looking for fresh challenges, after talks with Walt Disney Theatrical President, Thomas Schumacher, Cameron produced another hit stage musical, Mary Poppins, for both the 2004 West End and 2006 Broadway shows. He now owns eight London theatres. Back in 2011 The Sunday Times Rich List estimated Cameron’s fortune at £675 million making him the third richest person in the British music industry. “I didn’t enter this business to make money and it’s coincidental if I did. I’ve also lost a lot of money in shows over the years. But I won’t pretend I’ve made more money than I dreamt of having. I know it’s easy for me to say, but I don’t do it for the money.

Best of British The latest creations from the brace of brands putting Britain back on the mechanical watch map

Bremont Model: 1918 Collection Functions: Chronograph, date, day-night indicator and GMT 12 hours Movement: Calibre BE-16AE, an automatic chronograph movement modified from the Swiss-made Valjoux 7750

Christopher Ward Model: C8 Power Reserve Chronometer Functions: Date display, seconds sub dial, power reserve indicator Movement: A hand-wound version of Christopher Ward’s Calibre SH21, with a new bridge and decorated twin barrels Case: 44mm x 11mm; black DLC steel

Case: 43mm x 17.2mm: stainless steel (275 pieces), white gold (75) or rose gold (75) Water Resistance: 100 metres Power Reserve: 42 hours Strap: Alligator leather with pin buckle to complement case material The lowdown: The Henley-on-Thames brand celebrates the centenary of the Royal Air Force with a trilogy of limited-edition chronographs, which incorporate parts from three of Britain’s most famous fighter aircraft. What’s so special: As per Bremont’s other historically-inspired limited editions, the 1918 Collection incorporates an element of its subject matter within its construction. In this case, metal from a Bristol Blenheim, a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane – all aircraft which flew during the Battle of Britain in 1940 – are used in the three propeller blades found in the watch’s rotor.

Price: From £8,495-£16,995

Water Resistance: 50 metres Power Reserve: 120 hours Strap: Tiber leather; available in tan, brown or black The lowdown: In July 2014, only a decade after launching as ‘the most affordable luxury watches in the world’, Christopher Ward announced that it had engineered its own proprietary calibre in collaboration with Swiss movement specialist Synergies Horlogères. Now, the brand builds a power reserve indicator and seconds sub-dial into its ‘in-house’ base calibre. What’s so special: The SH21 is the first calibre Christopher Ward has taken from the drawing board to production. The design is based on Baukastensystem principles, a modular approach that takes its name from the German word meaning ‘building blocks’. In the most prosaic terms, the movement’s 164 parts are assembled separately in blocks and then brought together.

The

POWER COUPLE

For half a decade, Jean-Claude Biver and Ricardo Guadalupe, two of the most pioneering personalities in watch land, have ruled over Hublot, propelling the brand from the suburbs of Geneva to the vanguard of popular culture Words: RICHARD BROWN

Is it right to talk about smartwatches and mechanical timepieces in the same conversation? “Yes. If a smartwatch isn’t a watch, what is it? If it’s on your wrist and tells the time, it’s a watch. The smartwatch gives you additional information other than the time, so does the moonphase.”

Are you surprised Apple Watch sales now surpass Rolex sales?

Jean-Claude Biver Head of watchmaking, LVMH Perhaps the single most important person in mechanical watches, spearheading the brands belonging to LVMH, Jean-Claude Biver sets the course for the watch industry at large. He has rebuilt Blancpain, rescued Omega and transformed Hublot.

40

“Two years ago we knew that Apple would become as big as Rolex. Apple announced that it would be producing 10 million units. Ten million units at $400 on average is $4bn, which is already close to Rolex’s turnover. We knew the potential was huge.”

What does this mean? “It’s the best promotion we could ask for. The majority of the Swiss watch industry’s turnover relates to watches over $2,000. Will people buying a Patek Philippe suddenly say ‘no, I don’t want a Patek Philippe anymore, I want an Apple Watch’? No, they will buy both.”

LVMH has authorised Bamford Watch Department to customise watches for TAG Heuer, Zenith and Bulgari. How much is that an attempt to target a younger demographic? “It’s not just about targeting a younger audience; it’s our answer to a market trend. There is a new wealth class. The rich are becoming richer; their number is increasing every year. These people want individuality; something only they own. It’s a huge difference to have a Mercedes by Mercedes and a Mercedes by AMG. Bamford is allowing customers to individualise our watches in a way we cannot always handle. Doing one-offs costs a fortune. Bamford is the best solution.”

Zenith’s Defy Lab won the Innovation prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2017. How important is the watch to the brand, and to the industry at large? “The Defy is the future of traditional Swiss watchmaking, which has had little technical evolution since 1675 [when Dutch horologist Christiaan Huygens invented the balance spring]. The whole mechanical watch industry has been based on the pendulum; ours is the first innovation that says there is another way to produce a mechanical watch. It has no friction; it doesn’t need oil; it’s not influenced by temperature; it’s not affected by magnetism; how can anyone resist a new system that brings such major improvements? This system will take over as time goes on.”

Will you make the movement available to other watch manufacturers? “We must! It’s like what happens in Silicon Valley – this sort of technology cannot be just for you. It’s an open concept. It needs to be shared.”

To what extent do you see yourself as a custodian of Switzerland’s mechanical watch industry? “I’ve spent 42 years in this industry; I have never worked in another field. It’s my passion, my life, my future. Of course, I have a different view of the industry now than I did when I was young.

42

When I was 30 I cared about me, about my brand. When you are 68 you have a generosity; you have a different way of thinking.”

What is your most significant achievement? “Sharing knowledge and technology – sharing is the ultimate luxury in life. When you share knowledge, when you share love, assets, experience, mistakes. Sharing makes you rich.”

Who are your horological heroes? “The first was Georges Golay, the former chairman of Audemars Piguet, the man who gave me my first job. For one year he told me to do nothing but learn. Every day I had to sit down and say nothing; just listen. The second was Fritz Ammann, who used to be the boss of Omega. In 1979, when I was 29 years old, he named me product director. It was written in the company rules that you had to be 30 before they named you a director – so they had to make an exception for me. This guy believed in me and helped me trust myself. Whoever has helped you trust yourself – they are a god. Also hugely influential was Nicolas Hayek of Swatch. I worked alongside him for 12 years. When you sit next to a giant for 12 years, something rubs off, you grow yourself.”

Vegas boutique is one of the top five performing in the world.”

Has football sponsorship provided similar quantifiable results?

Ricardo Guadalupe CEO, Hublot In 1994, while serving as product manager at Bulgari, Ricardo Guadalupe was persuaded by Jean-Claude Biver to join Blancpain. In eight years, the duo increased turnover to CHF100 million (£76 million). When Jean-Claude Biver assumed control of Hublot in 2004, he again persuaded Guadalupe to join him.

You sponsored Floyd Mayweather during the Mayweather-McGregor fight. Given that the bout was dismissed as a charade, was there a risk of Hublot being stained by association? “Of course there was a risk. All the professional boxers were saying that it was a fake fight. In the end, everyone was surprised by the quality of the fight. It went to the tenth round. I got to be ringside. When you watch a fight live, you live the fight with the fighter – even I was exhausted.”

Combat sports aren’t usually where you’d expect to find a luxury Swiss watchmaker?

ABOVE AND BELOW: The Big Bang Bavaria, the first Big Bang cut from bronze, strapped to a hand-embroidered, deerleather bracelet, £23,400, hublot.com

“Hublot is a young brand. We try to be different and the first in everything we do. We took the risk of going into football more than ten years ago; boxing was also a risk but we believed we could be the first watch brand in that sport, too. The link with Las Vegas is good for us. Our Las

“This is more difficult to judge. It has allowed us to build the brand because with football you have enormous visibility. Take the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro – over one month we touched billions of people. Of course, not all these people can buy the watch but they now know, at the very least, that Hublot is a watch brand. The success we’ve experienced in the last 10 years suggests that we’ve followed the right strategy.”

How special was the 2014 Brazil World Cup? “It was unique. We decided to do incredible activations from day one until the end. We took over an entire hotel. I stayed there for four weeks and watched 15 games. We invited more than 1,000 people. It’s something we cannot repeat; Russia will be different. Russia is a huge country so we will focus on cities like Moscow and St Petersburg.”

Apple is now the world’s most successful ‘watchmaker’. Is the mechanical watch industry doomed? “It’s 50 years since the birth of the quartz watch. At that time, we thought the Swiss watch industry would collapse but we found ways to maintain it. There are always these cycles when a new technology comes along. This latest technology is very impressive but whenever a new smartwatch comes out, what do you do with the old one? You throw it away. We position our products as works of art, aesthetically and mechanically. That’s where value is derived. That’s the future of the Swiss mechanical watch industry.”

Will Hublot bring out a smartwatch of its own? “We are open to the idea and are working closely with FIFA. But we will not do a smartwatch as a business product. It would be more a smartwatch for referees at the World Cup.”

espite the rise of the manscaping, selfie-taking uber-metrosexual, the fact remains: there are fewer than a handful of male ‘super’ models. Models, that is, who could walk into a boozer outside of metropolitan, appearance-obsessed London and cause red-blooded blokes to look up from their pints and whisper to their pals, ‘blow me, that’s…bla bla!’. When the blue-eyed boy from Billericay fronted a Dolce & Gabbana campaign in nothing but a pair of budgie-smugglers, he hit blast-off on a career trajectory towards mainstream stardom (thanks, in part, to a contract with Marks & Spencer). Yet despite social media creating an influencer out of every @tomdickandharry, for years Mr David Gandy existed in a league of his own. Then came a chisel-jawed fella from Hitchin, who was scouted at 15, whisked away to New York at 16 and cast by Calvin Klein Jeans alongside a Russian supermodel named Natalia Vodianova. Hailed as “the new Leonardo DiCaprio” by Select Model Management co-founder Tandy Anderson, Mr Oliver Cheshire went on to work with Vivienne Westwood, Missoni and Paul Smith. An engagement to a pop star called Pixie Lott followed in 2016. He proposed on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral. She said “Yes” and posted on Instagram: ‘So happy – biggest surprise ever’. Following in the footsteps of Gandy – his Select agency stable mate – Cheshire has shot for D&G, launched a line with M&S and become an ambassador for Jaguar Land Rover. Last summer, the soon-to-be-30-year-old added ‘all-action hero’ to his curriculum vitae when, outside the Natural History Museum, he wrestled to the ground an out-of-control cab driver and helped suppress him until the local constabulary arrived. When did Gandy ever do that? Touted as the everyman of modelling – in addition to high-fashion brands, he’s helped boost sales for Gap and Superdry – Cheshire is known for being one of the most down-toearth faces in fashion. He uses the word

‘mate’ and talks with a Thames Estuary accent. Having entered the public vernacular, and with his star continuing to rise, we sent Britain’s next male supermodel to the snowy slopes of Tignes. Where better to present the latest in party wear?

Have you chosen what you’ll be wearing down the aisle? I haven’t fully decided on which brand I’ll be wearing yet, but it’s either going to be a beautifully tailored British M&S suit – which will be in keeping with the British theme – or I’ll go Italian in a Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo. Both brands have been huge supporters of mine and have become like friends and family.

What’s the key to longevity in modelling? To be successful you need to get rebooked on jobs with the same clients. You have to have the ability to adapt with the times and changes in the industry, pretty much like any job. It’s very important to be versatile with your look.

How did it feel to become an ambassador for British powerhouses Marks & Spencer and Jaguar Land Rover? I’m extremely lucky to work with two of the country’s most famous and amazing brands. I remember from a young age always wanting to own a Jag – now my dream has come true!

Which sort of brands do you most enjoy working with? I love working with brands which have an energy and excitement about them, always pushing boundaries in menswear.

You helped both Marks & Spencer and Superdry achieve record sales. How did that make you feel? It’s always nice to hear things you work hard on achieving their goals.

How has the male modelling industry changed over the course of your career? Many things have changed since I started.

For a start, there’s now GPS on your phone which makes castings a lot easier. It’s all about social media numbers now, with clients always asking the question ‘How many followers?’ Advertising budgets have shrunk as more is being spent on social media campaigns. This has given models with a larger number of followers more power in their own right.

Do you run your own social media accounts? How much time do you spend on social media each day? I do run my own social media accounts. I usually spend about two hours a day on it, but I’m finding it increasingly boring.

You travel a lot for work. How do you stay in shape? Travelling and staying in shape are part of the job description, so it’s important to get loads of sleep, and the cliché of drinking lots of water. I also always take healthy snacks on long-haul flights.

What’s special about British style? Britain is the home of tailoring and we still have the number one destination for suiting: Savile Row. We’re also not shy about taking risks when it comes to fashion and that is why many trends and generations of style and fashion were born here; the whole 60s movement. The mods. The rockers. Punk.

Would you like to design a fashion collection yourself? It’s always been a dream of mine to design my own fashion collection. I’m actually in the process of designing one, which should be ready for summer.

A Piece of History A 1999 Ford Focus WRC, driven by the legendary Colin McRae in four rounds of the World Rally Championship, is being offered for sale by Silverstone Auctions at its Race Retro Competition Car Sale on 23 February. McRae, who tragically died in a helicopter accident in 2007, was the youngest and also the first British driver to win the World Rally Championship Drivers’ Title in 1995, making him a household name.

The model going under the hammer at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire was driven by McRae with co-driver Nicky Grist at the Rally Catalunya and the Rally Tour De Corse (where it finished fourth), plus the Rally Acropolis and Rally China. In total it has competed in 11 rounds of the World Rally Championship, being driven by other rally greats including Petter Solberg and Thomas Radstrom. (silverstoneauctions.com)

SPIDER Matthew Carter is smitten with the latest convertible supercar from the McLaren stable. Watch your back, Ferrari

S

even years ago, you could count the number of cars made by McLaren on the fingers of one hand – and they were driven exclusively by the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Back in 2010, McLaren made Grand Prix cars and little else. This year, McLaren is on target to build almost 4,000 cars, plus - of course - a handful of Grand Prix cars. But while the latter is struggling to make an impression on the F1 grid, the company’s road car division, McLaren Automotive, is racing ahead. McLaren can’t get close to Ferrari on the racetrack but it is giving the Prancing Horse real cause for concern when it comes to road car sales. And given that Ferrari has been making road cars for 70 years and McLaren Automotive for fewer than seven, that’s no mean achievement. McLaren’s road car range is split into three different families, with the Ultimate Series at the top, the Super Series next and the Sports Series as the entry-level way in to the brand. These terms are relative, of course. Entry-level invariably conjures up an image of a lowpowered model right at the bottom of the pecking order, not a machine with a top speed of more than 200mph. The trouble with supercars is that they’re not always as good as they look. They might turn heads and offer enough straight-line performance to scare an unsuspecting passenger silly, but they are, at best, a compromise. They’re difficult to get into, temperamental in traffic, impossible to park

66

and invariably impractical. The 570S from the Sports Series is none of these things – it’s an extraordinary supercar that goes even better than it looks, and which, in Spider form, adds the extra excitement offered by a convertible. Like the 570S Coupé, the Spider has a carbonfibre chassis clothed with aluminium body panels that combine strength and light weight with the benefit of performance, refinement and pin-sharp handling. At its heart is what McLaren calls MonoCell II: the carbon-fibre passenger ‘tub’ that’s so strong it needs no extra strengthening to compensate for the lack of a roof. The hardtop roof is a work of art. At the touch of a button it splits into two and folds away under a tonneau cover behind the cockpit. It takes just 15 seconds to lower, something that can be done on the move at speeds of up to 25mph. With the roof up, the space under the cover can be used as extra luggage space to augment the usefully deep front ‘boot’. OK, it doesn’t have the carrying capacity of a family estate, but as mid-engine sports cars go, it’s easily one of the best. Performance is important, of course, and the 570S Spider is no slouch, with a top speed of 204mph. That’s if the roof is up – with the roof down, the maximum speed is only 196mph, according to McLaren. With the roof up, so quiet is the cockpit that you’d be forgiven for assuming you were in the coupé – unless you want a bit of noise. A neat touch is the glass rear window, which acts as a wind buffer when the roof is down but can be lowered when the roof is up to bring a little of the

PASSPORT TO

PARADISE A honeymoon in the Maldives offers romance, luxury and sublime natural beauty. The only problem is that no other holiday will ever compare to it, writes Charlotte Pasha

72

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

T

he danger of actually visiting your top bucket list destination is that it disappoints in reality. The sights are more spectacular in photographs, the sea less technicolour than people say and the idyllic setting hampered by construction noises and unsightly buildings. Reader, none of this is true with the Maldives. It is all that people say, and more. When planning our honeymoon, my nowhusband and I knew we’d want somewhere relaxing (the stress of planning a 350-person wedding is no joke), luxurious (I didn’t want to move more than 20 feet without someone offering me a fresh coconut or cold towel) and romantic (because if not now, when?). The Maldives, by all accounts, was the answer. So on 1 December last year we landed at Malé airport, sparkly new wedding bands on our fingers, ready to flop. All Maldivian resorts are accessed via either a seaplane or boat ride from the airport, and the tricky accessibility is what keeps the Maldives elite, exclusive, and - yes - expensive. Many of the world’s most famous hotel names have a site here: One & Only, Six Senses, and the Four Seasons has two. Our pick is COMO Cocoa Island, a 45-minute boat ride away from Malé and set in the South Malé atoll. The whole island is teeny – we can walk the perimeter in 10 minutes – and ludicrously beautiful. All the villas are directly over the water, so you simply climb down a ladder on your private deck into the warm, turquoise embrace of the Indian Ocean, which can be seen from every single angle of the resort. The waters are spectacularly clear, so we see fish – and even baby sharks – each day, as we sit on the deck to enjoy the sunset. The 33 rooms all have a nautical theme, and some are designed to resemble local boats called dhonis. The colour scheme is muted to emphasise the huge windows. Think white paint, billowing muslin curtains and light wood. Our room, in the most popular Loft Villas category, has high ceilings, a loft bedroom from which we can hear the sea at night, and an open-plan living area with comfy cushions and expansive sofas for lolling. Handmade biscuits

73

and Ceylon tea on offer in the little kitchen area also prove tempting. The sublime bathroom – the size of most London flats – boasts a freestanding bath, own-brand products, fluffy towelling robes and an expansive his-and-hers wardrobe. There is also an outdoor shower in which you can get a tan as you shampoo your hair. Better still, halfway through our trip we’re upgraded to a COMO Villa, the top room category. It is utterly vast and designed to sleep four, with a fully stocked kitchen and outdoor dining table for nine, should you wish to entertain. The spaciousness is wonderful, but it is the three private decks – the most spectacular leading off from the living room – that make this villa so special. A hammock and sun loungers overlook uninterrupted views of the staggeringly turquoise lagoon meeting the deeper, bluer sea. If you’re looking to splash out on the trip of a lifetime, this is the room to book. People complain that there is nothing to do in the Maldives, but we beg to differ. The pace of life is slower, but this gives ample time to really enjoy the unique setting. At dusk, sandbanks emerge as the tides go out and you can walk a long way out into the ocean, experiencing the surreal sensation of being utterly exposed. Just watching the wildlife is wonderful, from the crabs that scuttle along the beach to the array of birds that flutter by. You can

read under palm trees on the expansive white sandy beach, do yoga on the dedicated pavilion, visit the hydra pool, check out the upmarket resort shop selling pretty kaftans and swimming trunks, have a session in the gym (if you must), or pop into the Marine Centre. The latter is where you go to collect your snorkelling gear. It’s yours to keep for the stay, so you can just jump in whenever it takes your fancy. Did I mention there’s water absolutely everywhere? We see brightly coloured parrotfish in great schools, ample powder-blue surgeonfish and beautiful coral. Go for a daily 10-minute dip, or a guided 45-minute session – the aquatic life here is sensational. Should you be feeling more adventurous, there are daily excursions on offer. We love the sunset cruise – a boat takes us out of the bay and we enjoy champagne and nibbles as we watch the sun go down on another gilded day. Meanwhile, pilot whales (the second largest species of the dolphin family) and flying fish play near the boat. It is hard not to grin at how lucky and spoilt we are at this moment. Turtle snorkelling is another highlight: we head out to

a reef deep in the sea and jump in, getting unbelievably close to well-camouflaged sea turtles going about their routine. As for food, our wedding diets well and truly met their demise here. Food is utterly delicious: fresh, beautifully served and ample yet refined. While there’s just one restaurant - Ufaa - you won’t be bored with it, thanks to the wonderful views – it is candlelit and open to the elements – and changing menus. You can also opt to eat in the seclusion of your own deck, or for a real treat, do dinner on the beach. A small candlelit table is set up on a secluded sandbank. Service is excellent but allows for utter privacy and the cocktails flow as we soak in the surroundings, gasping at the starry sky. Were we not newly married, I would have absolutely expected a proposal here.

Breakfast is a combination of buffet and a la carte options, and we enjoy buttermilk pancakes, eggs royale and granola, along with fresh juices and coconut water on tap. Lunch fare has everything you could ever wish for, including the addition of a Shambhala menu for lighter, wellness-inspired options, like the excellent Big Vegetable Salad. The spiced fish burger is not to be missed. Dinner options range from themed nights of Indian Thali, Thai fare and seafood buffets, to a menu offering south-east Asian and Mediterranean choices of fish, meat and pasta, the former being a particular highlight. We enjoy local jackfish ceviche and grilled catch of the day, which tends to be kingfish and is wonderful. Don’t skimp on dessert: the banana and chocolate soufflé is a game changer. The spa is excellent and an amenity on which COMO rightly prides itself on. One morning, my husband and I head over for the house special: a 75-minute Shambhala massage. A therapist tends to each of us, as we lie side by side, applying calming essential oils and working out the knots in our backs and shoulders. It ends with a blissful head massage, which sees off the last of the wedding stress. We follow it up with a cup of the house specialty: sweet but zingy ginger tea, which becomes a firm fixture at mealtimes from then on. There is plenty of time here for rest and relaxation, long conversations, dreamy romantic dinners and whiling away afternoons. Even when it pours with rain, which it does on occasion, it serves only to break up the otherwise incessant blue sky and sunshine, and allows for cosy time indoors. If you think I have rose-tinted glasses on, come to the Maldives. It’s impossible to view it any other way. From £672 per night including breakfast (comohotels.com)

Romance Wedding planner, Liz Taylor is always on the lookout for luxurious, romantic locations. So we sent her to check out the exclusive Lone Star Boutique Hotel and Restaurant in Barbados

W

hen choosing a romantic getaway, few places can compete with Barbados. Waking up to watch the sunrise over the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea always feels special. Eating breakfast on a terrace overlooking the gorgeous beach takes that experience and magnifies it 100-fold. It feels like we’re a million miles away from the concerns of everyday life; almost as if we’ve stepped off the world for a few days and entered a paradise island. The Lone Star is more luxury hideaway than luxury hotel. It has all the amenities of a five-star luxury resort, including flat screen TVs, ipod docks, WiFi, in-room spa treatments, a trendy cocktail bar and a first-class restaurant. The big difference is, this hotel has only six suites, which makes it the perfect size for an exclusive

pre-wedding celebration or honeymoon escape. In the 1940s the site housed the only petrol station on the west side of the island, and this history is reflected in the names of the suites: Cadillac, Lincoln, Buick, Studebaker, Shelby and Corvette. We stayed in Corvette, one of two suites in the Beach House, which can be rented separately or as a three/four-bedroom house. What may sound like a little shack overlooking the ocean, is far from reality. It is a spacious, three-storey coral stone property, with a mixture of marble and mahogany floors, exposed stone walls, and painted wood ceilings with large overhead fans. It’s all stylishly decorated in the hotel’s signature colours, a complementary mix of blue hues and white, and effortlessly combines elegance with space and luxurious comfort. I love it. The Beach House has a fully-equipped kitchen, and private dining can be arranged for up to 30 guests. Staff are on hand to cater for your every need, but otherwise it’s a comfortable home from home, where you can relax without

worrying about anything from the outside world. I would, though, recommend that you eat at the hotel’s restaurant, nicknamed ‘The Ivy of the Caribbean’, open to non-residents, which has a lively atmosphere and an unrivalled location on the beach. It’s a wonderful spot for photos and if you were thinking of having a wedding party here, can seat up to 150. It’s easy to see why Lone Star is a popular destination for Prime Ministers and stars like Simon Cowell and Mariah Carey – it’s private, discreet, luxurious and comfortable. For added relaxation, spa treatments are available in your room. I tried out the Lone Star Signature Lava Shell Massage and Facial Cleanse alongside the Honey and Citrus Manicure, included in pre-wedding celebration packages. If I had any knots of stress remaining, that certainly cleared them. For couples, the hotel also offers a Journey Together spa experience that includes side-by-side massages, facials and Foot Bath rituals.

Once refreshed, the sea offers plenty of active adventures. Taking a personalised Catamaran cruise to swim with the island’s famous turtles is something I’ll never forget. If you’re looking to create your bubble of romantic bliss – this is the place. The Lone Star Boutique Hotel and Restaurant is in the St James area of Barbados. Luxury transfers are available to and from the hotel. Prices for a prewedding celebration start from USD $750.00 per person or USD $1,500.00 per room (double occupancy) for a minimum four-night stay. A Honeymoon Retreat break, including a bottle of champagne on ice, starts from USD $2,600.00 per couple. Bespoke breaks are available. (thelonestar.com)

Weekend away The Devonshire Arms

L

ooking for an escape for the weekend, my husband, dog (Daisy) and I headed over to Yorkshire, my home county, for a couple of nights. Owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and located within the stunning Bolton Abbey Estate, the country house hotel has 40 rooms and two restaurants. We arrived on a busy Friday afternoon; greeted by a crackling fireplace, all three of us were warmly welcomed and shown to our room on the ground floor, with extensive views across the parkland to the River Wharfe. Ours was a pet-friendly classic room with country house-style decor but all the modern conveniences you require. There was even a specific welcome pack and treat selection for Daisy, as well as a truly Yorkshire treat box for the grown-ups. A lovely added touch is the fresh delivery of Yorkshire Parkin in the afternoons, ready for you after a long walk. After we had settled we found we were a little peckish and headed past the afternoon tea aficionados to the cocktail lounge for a bite to eat. The staff were delightful and made sure we and Daisy, most importantly, had a great seat with views out of the window. Choosing from the light snack menu, we indulged in a Yorkshire Ploughman’s and cheeky scone, providing us with the required energy to set about a walk to Bolton Abbey and the famous stepping stones. Unfortunately the fading light predicted that it would be a short walk, but with easy access straight from the hotel, it was more a pleasant amble, to get our bearings and paddle in the river with fellow fully togged-up walkers and wanderers. We headed home, happy and ruddy-cheeked, ready for dinner.

78

With Daisy nestled in her bed, we had dinner booked in the four-rosette, Burlington finedining restaurant and a tasting menu chosen for us by head chef, Paul Leonard. These seasonal tasting menus offer the best way to experience the finest local ingredients as well as introduce you to things that you wouldn’t normally choose.

“Our weekend stay was an escape away with fine food, fine surroundings and friendly people” Our menu of nine courses went as follows: hand-picked Whitby crab with kohlrabi and sea herbs; duck liver, cobnut, duck fat brioche and ham; creel-caught langoustine with pork cheek and celeriac; heritage carrot, smoked eel, spiced seeds and curds; wild sea bass, artichoke, sea vegetables and Champagne; Yorkshire mutton, turnip, parsley and mustard; selection of Yorkshire cheeses; plum, walnut and crème fraiche; and poached pear, brown butter custard and Birch syrup. Each dish awoke our taste buds and delighted our expectations, perfectly presented and served with a pleasant passion. I would recommend any foodie to try this. If it’s not your thing, though, and you want something hearty and simple after your day in the Dales, then The Brasserie offers a great alternative. Our weekend stay was an escape away with fine food, fine surroundings and friendly people. (thedevonshirearms.co.uk)

ine lovers often critique a wine by the bouquet and taste alone, and the glass it is decanted into is not considered. However, Austrian glassmakers Riedel have recognised that wine displays completely different characteristics in different glasses. For Riedel, the glass is the instrument used to convey the wine’s message and it’s essential for enhancing the four sensations in wine: bouquet, texture, flavour and finish. Their latest collection of beautiful glassware and decanters is titled ‘Fatto a Mano’ and has colour created directly inside the crystal. The company uses a combination of hand- formed, mouth- blown traditions, together with machine- made technology and has created a range glassware that enhances the enjoyment of your favourite wine. The collection range will be in a more refined style with a colour code individually specific to each cuvée. In the vintage range, the blanc de blancs 2006 will become the Cuvée Louis 2006, named after one of the House founders, Louis Salmon. The champagne house dates back to 1818 and is still independent and family owned. Francois and Antoine RolandBillecart are the sixth generation to carry on the champagne making tradition and produce an exceptional champagne of rare complexity and stunning freshness. ...with DANIEL SPEAK, Head Chef at 1539 Restaurant and Bar, Chester Racecourse What is your favourite ingredient? My favourite ingredient would have to be coriander seeds. They have a fantastic flavour when they pop in your mouth. Plus, it’s a flavour that brings back childhood memories of aniseed balls, which I loved when I was a child. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? Home cooked, comfort food would have to be my favourite. There is nothing better than home cooked stew and dumplings or crusty bread. Especially during the winter months, when you crave something hearty. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF KITCHEN KIT? The thermomixer. It’s awesome! It heats whilst mixing and has so many functions and uses including emulsifying, kneading and whipping. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DESERT ISLAND DISH? That’s easy. Definitely my girlfriend’s secret recipe nachos. They’re to die for. WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR A LIVING IF YOU WERE NOT A CHEF? I’d like to think I would have become an actor. My dream role would be playing Dr Who. (restaurant1539.co.uk)

Dark & Handsome It’s traditional to give chocolates to the one you love. Typically, pretty boxes containing sweet chocolates for the lady in your life. But, we have found something a bit different, for the gents. To’ak chocolate is amongst the very finest in the world. It’s made with all the care and attention to detail of a vintage wine and takes you on a sensory journey from earth to tree to bean to bar. Made using the rare Ecuadorian cacao, To’ak work exclusively with fourteen Ecuadorian Cacao growers creating a chocolate which contains only cacao mass and cane sugar. This produces a bar with a fully traceable provenance and they have now added another layer to its complex taste. To’ak has now produced the first ever dark chocolate aged for two years in an Islay single malt whisky cask, from the two hundred year old Scottish Laphroaig distillery. We definitely think this is one for the boys. (toakchocolate.com)

Go Wild Foraging is a trend all the best chefs are embracing, so why not join in and learn how to find the food growing wild in Cheshire. Wild Food UK is excited to be running their first foraging courses at Marbury Country Park, a beautiful new Cheshire venue on the edge of Budworth Mere. The mixture of open grassland, woodland and brooks makes this park perfect for spring foraging. The course includes a two to three hour walk around the park identifying different edible and poisonous spring shoots, plants, flowers and mushrooms. The day finishes with a tasty wild food lunch based on what’s been found such as wild salad picked on the day and possibly even some wild garlic pesto. Wild food courses are available on 30 March, 21 April and 20 May. (wildfooduk.com)

orthcote is set on the edge of the beautiful Ribble Valley and is the domain of Nigel Haworth, the much respected chef, infamous for his creation of dishes using regional artisan produce served with true gastronomic flair. Northcote has been his home since 1984 and under his reign the restaurant has held a Michelin star since 1996. Once a year Nigel holds his unique extravaganza entitled, Obsession, which is now in its 18th year. This is an eighteen night celebration to which Nigel brings together Michelin starred chefs from across the world, inviting them to his restaurant to champion their own style of cuisine. It’s a fantastic event which allows guests to experience the food from these, some of the best chefs in the world. I was lucky enough to be invited by The Cheshire Magazine partners, Wedgwood, and we were greeted with a warm welcome on arrival. Once settled, we took a tour of the grounds and kitchen gardens, building our appetites for the evening

Culinary Excellent, foodies and a special treat

ahead. Northcote has long been associated with fresh, local and seasonal produce, something which is very close to Nigel’s heart and the very ethos of his style of cookery. Northcote’s garden is the result of a pioneering partnership with gardening expert, Phil Dewhurst and is now a biodynamic gardening scheme providing sustainable, organic produce within the grounds of the hotel. This year’s incredible Obsession line up included some amazing names including, Jean Phillippe Blondet from Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, Austria’s Juan Amador and Larry Jayasekara from Petrus. Local boys Tommy Banks and Gary Usher were also on board. We were definitely in for a treat, as our guest chef for the night was, Manish Mehrotra. Mehrotra is a corporate chef of Indian Accent, he is one of India’s leading chefs and is renowned for his modern inventive cooking style with its international influences. His empire now includes restaurants in India, New York and Mayfair. With many accolades to his name including

the title of ‘one of the world’s best Indian chefs’ by the New York’s Time Out Magazine, we looked forward to what was to be a wonderful culinary journey. The evening began with a champagne reception after which, we were shown into the kitchen to the chefs table, providing the perfect vantage point from which see the chefs in action and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the kitchen. Nigel talked us through the ten-course tasting menu and chatted with guests about the history of Northcote. The sommelier educated us on the carefully chosen wine flight; explaining the reason for each selection, picked to complement the complexity of the Indian spices in each dish. Each wine was a perfect accompaniment to its course and a real standout was the red, Lebanese, Hochar, Chateau Musar 2013. The whole evening was a showcase of Manish’s work, skill and creativity and I have to admit to being a little ‘star struck’ when he came to chat to us at the end of service. For me, highlights included, the Pumpkin and Coconut Shorba which was a delicious silky amuse bouche, Garlic Pepper Langoustine with cauliflower and Kerala Moilee. (northcote.com)

hat better way to start my week than with a visit to the beautiful Alderley Edge Hotel, which rightly boasts the title as ‘jewel in the crown’ in the JW Lees portfolio. The hotel is now even more worthy, as it has recently unveiled a stunning new bar and restaurant following an exciting makeover. A programme of extensive investment combined with a creative interior scheme, has completely transformed the hotel to reposition it as one of Cheshire’s best boutique hotels. On arrival, I’m greeted by friendly staff, and a lovely warm wood burner provides a focal point to the new reception which, in turn, leads through to

a modern, stylish, open -plan bar and restaurant. Under the guidance of Carroll Design, this grand house maintains its original elegance, while newly introduced eclectic décor, pops of colour and contemporary furnishings bring the hotel seamlessly from past to present. The result is a

As we sit down for coffee, John agrees and tells me, “We are all delighted with the transformation and are excited to embark on a new chapter in the hotel’s history.” He adds, “I love coming to work.” I can’t help noticing little details and quirky elements which make this a great place to hang out; and it’s not just me: I can hear several guests talking about the fabulous

As we chat, John explains that the refurbishment is the result of a considered plan to ensure the hotel, together with the restaurant and bar, delivers a special and welcoming space for people to escape, relax and enjoy beautiful food and drink. JW Lees first acquired the hotel 30 years ago and their vision to move it into the 21st century has been realised with this refurbishment. The next phase of work is now under way with the function suites and all 50 bedrooms being transformed so as to appeal to all their clients, whether corporate or leisure. Once the work is complete the whole hotel will be a great destination for locals and travellers alike. I can already see the bar and restaurant as the place to be. The change of décor is matched by a change in the menu. The hotel will be maintaining the 3 AA Rosette standard it’s famous for while also presenting a more relaxed informal ambiance. John explains, “Our staff are professional and knowledgeable and at the same time welcoming and friendly.” He continues, “Myself and my team very much represent the JW Lees company ethos.

I have to say, this is with the exception of some at the bar, but that’s because they are busy enjoying their drinks served with a slice of mischief by charismatic bar manager, Bruno Santos. John smiles, “It’s important to the hotel that guests feel truly welcome.” With this in mind, their plans and events for 2018 focus on making everyone feel at home and offer the opportunity to get to know staff. Our meeting draws to a close and, from my time with John, it’s clear that he and his team are very proud and speak with true affection for their hotel. John Adds, “And it’s not just us, from long standing clients and regulars to new guests, everyone has a smile when they are here.” Whether you want an intimate dinner for two or a lively cocktail master class with Bruno, the new space is welcoming and all encompassing - just like home. The Josper Grill is a state-of-the-art piece of kit which takes pride of place in the brand new kitchen. It’s an oven and charcoal grill with a unique closed barbeque design. The combination of craftsmanship and technology mean it’s at the top of the best chefs’ wish list. For the rest of you, it can be summed up in two words: ‘great steak’. Treasure Natalie Anglesey speaks with the voice of CBeebies’ new show and local acting favourite Shobna Gulati

T

elevision viewers will recognise Oldham actress, Shobna Gulati, for ground-breaking roles in our most popular programmes. During our recent catch-up, she reminds me that her first featured role on television was in Victoria Wood’s popular comedy series, dinnerladies. “It wasn’t the most glamorous role I’ve ever played,” laughs Shobna. “But it was my first big break and I later appeared in its re-incarnation as a stage play. I learnt about working in front of cameras from simply watching Vicky and the cast.” With award-winning actors like Julie Walters, Anne Reid, Celia Imrie and Maxine Peake - it’s no wonder! Featured roles followed in two of our most popular soaps for Shobna. But now, for the first time, she’s entered the world of animation along with fellow actor and friend, Sanjeev Bhaskar, who’s previously been in Paddington 2, The Kumars At No 42, and Unforgotten. They both appear as animated characters in the brand new CBeebies series, Treasure Champs. “Sanjeev and I have known each other since our boys were small,” Shobna explains. “It’s always a pleasure to work with someone you know as we are relaxed in each other’s company. It’s an amazing experience being in Treasure Champs because it’s my first ever animation

voice-over. Children are very discerning and you want to get it right for them.” In each episode there’s a traditional story from one of the main world religions. Both actors are providing the voices for comedic, animated figures called Barry and Kari. The series explores values like generosity and honesty aimed at children aged four plus, using their lovable characters alongside heart-warming films. “That’s what appealed to me,” Shobna confesses. “Also, I was able to choose which character I wanted to play. Against stereotype, I chose to voice the blue one while Sanjeev is the pink one - as you can imagine we laughed a lot! It’s made by a Manchester-based independent company, Three Arrows Media, which means

I’ve been able to work and spend time in my home town and see my family.” Shobna, who was raised in Oldham, appeared on the Channel 4 Special, Empire’s Children, tracing her family’s history during the partition of India. Her grandfather arrived from Bombay to Oldham where the family became part of the community in which her father was a doctor. “Growing up in Oldham then was difficult as there was a great deal of racism around,” Shobna admits. “Although now there’s an increased presence of ethnic minorities in the media - much as I would like to say racism has changed dramatically for the better - I’m afraid it still exists in this country today.” Divorced many years ago, Shobna has raised her 24-year-old son Akshay, who is now following in his mother’s footsteps. He teaches drama in London, while studying for a career in theatre, and Shobna hopes she’s impressed on him her core values.

“When I was a child, along with my siblings, we were raised with a strict work ethic, which I hope I’ve passed on to Akshay. We’re a family of high achievers. I went to Manchester Metropolitan University and studied drama and dance, as well as various languages, eventually becoming an actor and lecturer.” Perhaps best known for her role as Sunita Alahan, in Coronation Street, Shobna’s now a household name. She’s also one of few actors to have appeared on both Coronation Street and its rival series Eastenders, as Ameena Badawi. Film seemed a natural progression and Shobna appeared in the BAFTA winning short film Shadowscan. In 2004, I nominated her for a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for a wonderful performance in Dancing Within Walls at Contact. Other stage performances were the tour of Girls’ Night and Pretend You Have Big Buildings at the Royal Exchange Theatre. On television too, Shobna’s appeared on Loose Women among others. She was in Where The Heart Is, New Street Law and Magnolia as well as the revival of Jackanory. When she finally left Coronation Street she wanted to do more comedy. So she appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in The Secret Policeman’s Ball. In a sketch with American actors Chevy Chase and Seth Green, she and co-star Nitin Ganatra are under the mistaken belief Guantanamo Bay is a holiday resort!

“I’ve had the most amazing career which has lasted 32 years so far and afforded me wonderful opportunities,” Shobna reminisces. She’s made her debut as a film-maker, producing the short film Akshay, shortlisted for an award. She’s appeared on programmes as diverse as the BBC’s Celebrity Masterchef and Countdown. In 2016, she appeared in the ITV/ Netflix series Paranoid while last year she played Saba in the British romantic comedy film, Finding Fatimah - and she shows no sign of slowing down. A vocal supporter of Asian women’s rights and various anti-racism campaigns, Shobna lectures and works with women’s groups. “I wake each day not knowing what it will bring or where it will take me. I’d no idea I would be voicing an animation and I’ve loved the experience of working on Treasure Champs where you are part of a team and view the world through the eyes of a child again. We’ve so much to learn from children who accept human beings no matter what their background. “What next? I’ve no idea. I seem to live on trains at the moment. So, as the song says – Wherever I lay my hat - that’s my home!” Treasure Champs is on CBeebies

Withington

OXBRIDGE offers

T

wenty-one Withington Girls’ School students have received offers to study at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, with 19 current Sixth Formers holding conditional places, dependent upon securing required grades at A-Level, and two of last year’s leavers celebrating unconditional offers. This year’s impressive number of Oxbridge offers – 13 for Cambridge and eight for Oxford – is a record for Withington, with 24 per cent of this year’s Upper Sixth cohort of 80 pupils earning the sought-after opportunity to progress to the two oldest and consistently most highlyranked universities in the United Kingdom. Subjects the Withington Oxbridge candidates have chosen to study range from history and politics, modern foreign languages, law, geography and economics to natural sciences, mathematics, psychology, archaeology, engineering and medicine. Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, comments: “We’re delighted to see the girls’ passion for their

subjects, willingness to engage with ideas and genuine curiosity about the world reflected in their offers to study at these leading universities. Their success is richly deserved and epitomises the culture of commitment to the value of learning and independence of thought we nurture and celebrate here at Withington.” Other WGS Upper Sixth students are also holding offers to study at the UK’s top universities, including Durham, Edinburgh, King’s College London, LSE and UCL. Course choices span a broad range including architecture, fine art, computer science, dentistry, drama, English, economics, law, marketing, medicine, modern languages and optometry, demonstrating Withington’s status as one of the top dozen gateways for entry into Britain’s best educational institutions. As in most years at Withington, one quarter of the cohort aim to go on to study medicine, with aspirations to qualify as much-needed doctors. Head Girl, Sejal Karmarkar, who holds her offer from Jesus College, Cambridge, to study medicine said: “I feel very lucky because at Withington I received a huge amount of help and support, not only in preparation for the daunting interviews and admissions tests but also pastoral support and a LOT of encouragement through the stressful process.” Applications to join Withington’s Sixth Form in September 2018 are welcomed from girls who wish to be part of a friendly, vibrant and supportive community while benefiting from excellent teaching and the school’s well established track record in supporting pupils through their university applications process. Interested applicants should contact Admissions on 0161 249 3371 or email admissions@wgs.org

The classroom Rising Star Brilliant Buxton violinist Georgina Bloomfield has been awarded the Dame Ruth Railton Memorial Prize for services to the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Georgina, from King’s School, Macclesfield, has been a member of the National Children’s Orchestra since the age of seven and was their longest-serving member when she left. Now 14, Georgina practises for at least an hour every day, often with her mum, Helen- a professional violinist- but also under the eye of one of the country’s leading teachers Catherine Yates, at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. Principal of King’s Girls’ Division, Helen Broadley, said: “Listening to Georgina play is always a privilege and reaffirms that no matter how young you are, if you show determination and dedication and practise, you can reach for the stars.” (kingsmac.co.uk)

We can be Heroes Local literacy charity Beanstalk has launched a new campaign for 2018 to highlight the extraordinary difference that members of the community, in Cheshire, can make by volunteering in primary schools to support children who struggle with reading. By working with children who have either fallen behind with their reading, lack confidence, or struggle with their fluency or comprehension, Beanstalk reading helpers provide one-to-one sessions with the children they support, helping them to progress and encouraging reading enjoyment. In 2016-2017 Beanstalk reading helpers supported approximately 1,855 children in the north west of England with their reading and they want to grow this number for 2018. So, why not become a reader superhero this year and help develop the confidence and reading enjoyment of the next generation? (beanstalkcharity.org.uk/Pages/Category/ become-a-reading-helper)

International Debate Five sixth formers from The Queen’s School, Chester recently headed to Berlin to take part in an international debating conference. Queen’s was one of only two UK schools to be invited to the prestigious Berlin Model United Nations conference- the BerMUN- held at John F Kennedy School in Berlin. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Women’s Empowerment: A Key to Good Governance and SocioEconomic Prosperity’, a theme that resonated strongly with everyone at Queen’s. After many years of successful participation in regional and national conferences, the sixth formers were delighted to be able to take their skills to the next level at this international conference. Is it better to use an independent or restricted financial adviser? Tristan Hartey of Hartey Wealth Management discusses the role of independent financial advisers and how they can support you

A

t the heart of the financial advice market lies the Independent Financial Adviser. The easiest way to describe an Independent Adviser is to state that they are unrestricted in how they can advise you and any adviser that is not independent will be restricted in some form or another. The current regulatory environment has provided a distinct line between advisers that are Independent and those that are Restricted. Using the definition and explanation provided by the Regulator: The Independent Adviser will provide independent advice and is able to consider and recommend all types of retail investment products that could meet your needs and objectives. Independent advisers will also consider products from all firms across the market, and have to give unbiased and unrestricted advice. A restricted adviser or firm can only recommend certain products or product providers. They may even only be able to sell their own products.

• The adviser or firm has to clearly explain the nature of the restriction. If you are not sure you should ask for further information, but some examples of restricted advice are where: • The adviser works with one product provider and only considers products that company offers. • The adviser considers products from several – but not all – product providers. • The adviser can recommend one or some types of products, but not all retail investment products. Restricted advisers and firms cannot describe the advice they offer as ‘independent’. With independent advisers they have none of these restrictions. All advisers have to make it very clear to you what status they have. Hartey wealth management is a fully independent award-winning financial advice firmwho can recommend anything across the whole of the market. We work for our clients, not the fund companies.

ith spring just around the corner, it’s a great time to think about moving home. Whilst you may not be ready to sell right now, getting everything in order in time for the annual house buying spike can help you to stay ahead of the curve… and your competition. There’s a current shortage of properties for sale, which means vendors are able to take advantage of a growing number of purchasers all looking for their next home. And what better way to make the most of this fact than to be prepared before anyone else?

Armchair Traveller Brighten your home with the wonderfully eclectic world traveller trend. “Good foresight rather than rushing a property to market makes all the difference when it comes to showcasing your home to maximum benefit” The early bird really does catch the worm – giving early consideration to drawing up plans to move will allow you to hit the ground running. Time has a habit of running away with us and planning to sell your home doesn’t happen overnight. Good foresight rather than rushing a property to market makes all the difference when it comes to showcasing your home to maximum benefit. Talk with an estate agent early on and you could be plotting your plan of action and honing the narrative for your property in good time to bring it to market in spring. Getting good quality photographs of your home at this time of year can be difficult but not impossible. A good agent will always wait to get quality images of your property and a proactive agent will be happy to change the images as your garden blooms in the spring sunshine. Get your house in order, work with an agent to produce targeted marketing and hit the ground running. Preparation is everything.

LIFE IN DESIGN

Adam

JOHN We catch up with Adam John, RIBA Architect and Group Design Director of the Llama Group and Janey Butler Interiors

that culminated in the end result. We recently completed a wonderful project in Cheshire, an extensive conversion of an impressive lakeside property. The elegant simplicity of the end product was achieved through an intensive year-long design exercise, encompassing engineering and interior detailing that was anything but simple! Design, particularly at this level, is a team pursuit and the final product is testament to the amazing individuals I have the pleasure of working alongside in the studio each day. The finished home is just perfect and with a delighted client, it’s hard not to feel some pride at what we all achieved.

The people who have inspired you to pursue your career in architecture My late grandfather was the first to suggest I combine a love of art and science and take the first tentative steps along the (rather lengthy) path to becoming an architect. I’ve been blessed to have the support of my family and friends along the way. My partner, Sarah, herself an accomplished architect, is a huge inspiration and tolerates me more than I do myself at times!

The proudest moment in your career

The best thing about working in the industry

There is always a great feeling of pride at the end of a project, just before handover to a client, looking at the finished product and recalling the array of sketches, stories and decisions that are encapsulated within the finished product; looking back and remembering the late nights and the first tentative pencil lines from day one

Design is the process of fixing a problem. Great design is fixing it efficiently, effectively and reaching a solution that exceeds all expectation. The best thing about this industry is that we are tasked with fixing a person’s home, their sanctuary and something very personal. When working with a client, their trust is

“Above all things, I feel that architecture 118

Homes and Interiors

essential and that trust must be earned. I’ve always been fascinated by people (arguably more so than buildings) and the best projects result from the best relationships: getting to know clients to fully understand their needs, how they live, and therefore how to create the perfect home, specifically for them.

What do you love about the creative process? My approach to design evolves through relentless experimentation, exploring options in both two and three dimensions and always initially by hand, in pencil. In the studio, we work closely as a team, continually blurring the traditional lines between architecture, landscape and interior design and always learning from the team’s collective experiences. Andy and Janey Butler have a wealth of experience from their years of creating award- winning projects and from

travelling the world meeting and collaborating with incredible individuals in all corners of the globe. What I love is bringing together that knowledge with the array of different experiences within the whole design team to produce truly innovative designs and to constantly evolve in everything we do.

If you could have designed any building, past or present, which one would you choose? The Thermal Baths of Vals in Graubünden, Switzerland by legendary Swiss architect, Peter Zumthor truly is a work of art. The perfect combination of a glorious Alpine setting and a design brief to create a ‘cathedral of the senses’ resulted in a building that is everything I feel architecture should be: impressive, inspirational and beautiful. INTERIORS TRENDS FOR

© Felipe Araujo

T

his year’s interior trends ensure there is something to suit all tastes, architectural styles and room sizes. Wallpaper is back and its big, bright, leafy and dare we say it, floral. Colour is also a major player for 2018. Whether you are brave enough to go with this year’s black accent wall, embrace the Ultra Violet Pantone for 2018 and all the shades which will

CLOCKWISE L=R: No.9 cushion Violet (urbanavenue.co.uk); Studio Alex Bonilha, Barcelona Bath (vanaabaths.com Tapete Jungle Wallpaper (5qm. de); Matador Armchair (contentbyterence conran.com)

follow in its wake or go bold with a pop of bright colour, trending for sofas, tables and chairs. For the more faint hearted there’s soft sage, peach and tea rose. We’re going free standing in the kitchen and the trend for 1970’s glamour will see the return of colourful Terrazzo in the kitchen. And once the dishes are done we will be relaxing in our own personal sanctuary, with spa bathrooms being a key trend this year. So, whether you intend to go bold or put things in neutral, here’s our round up of the top trends for your home.

129

interior trends

New Neutrals A plain palette can be essential in many decorative schemes as well as creating a state of calm and peace. But colour doesn’t have to be a no go area. Magnolia has long since had her day as the neutral backdrop of choice having been replaced with crisp, clean white walls or a selection of ‘hint of…’ hessian shades. But for 2018 it’s time to step away from the boring beige as pale just got interesting. This year will see neutrals turning the softest shades of peach, lavender, sage and tea rose; all colours which work beautifully with on trend palest wooden floors and soft grey furnishings. Patterned Plants It looks as though this year we will be going potty about plants. This trend began last year but looks set to ‘grow’ for 2018. Whether real or faux, we will be filling our homes with plants especially vibrant, bold varieties and plants with patterned leaves. Adding a

plant is the easiest and quickest way to brighten a room, it’s also proven that looking after a plant helps reduce stress. But it doesn’t have to stop with the pot, we are embracing all things botanical especially the return of wallpaper with designs which incorporate greenery, palms and ferns. Spa Bathrooms Pinterest search figures indicate our love affair with spa bathrooms is nowhere near over, in fact, this is one of the major trends for 2018. It is driven by our increased awareness of the importance of mind, body and soul health. This year, turn your home

bathroom into your personal sanctuary with calming colours and natural materials. Consider investing in a freestanding Quarrycast bath by Victoria and Albert Baths. A stone rich alternative to both cast iron and acrylic. Casey Design Victoria and Albert Baths (vandabaths.com)

Concrete According to the editor of Houzz, this raw material is set to pour its way into our homes in the form of countertops, tiles and furniture. The trend will also include wallcoverings which replicate the look of concrete. But if this material is a little too industrial for your taste then, there will be plenty of accent pieces and decorative accessories to incorporate this look into your design schemes and keep your home on trend. Go Free in the Kitchen Free-standing furniture has had its place in domestic kitchens since medieval times when the kitchen table or bench would be used for preparation and eating. Kitchen Architecture has brought this concept to Wilmslow with Bulthaup’s purest and most beautifully detailed product to date, the Bulthaup b solitaire. A family of products including the dining table, preparation table and display cabinet. The modular

134

and changeable nature of the solitaire system gives you scope for change and fits in with your living space. Thanks to its free-standing positioning in the room, the b solitaire overcomes barriers and can be used from all sides. Free-standing furniture elements can, by their very nature, be moved and allow them to accompany you on your own personal journey and therefore becomes part of your own unique story. Mixed Metallics Rose gold has been big in metallics for a while and is here to stay for this year. But, for 2018 we are mixing things up. Metallics no longer have to be one or the other. Instead incorporate a selection of finishes from rose to yellow. Shiny chrome is welcome to the party

but, additions of more industrial shades are expected to become more prominent, with brass and nickel adding an organic element to your interiors. And for 2018, metallics are the perfect partner to the purple shades hitting the headlines thanks to the Ultra Violet Pantone of the Year. Davey Lighting Polished Copper (originalbtc.com)

gardens together with tennis court, glazed pool house and outbuildings. The whole estate covers around 530 acres and also comprises the Tenants Hall, Grade ll -listed stable block and courtyard, which dates back to the 1600s, and the Grade ll-listed Dower House together with five further houses and cottages. Henbury Hall is widely regarded as the most important classical house built in England in the 20th century and sits in a commanding position at the heart of a historic estate, that dates back to the 17th century. The property has a central dome creating a house flooded with natural light. Designed and constructed to the highest standard, the house exudes elegance and grandeur, yet is manageable and highly suited to modern -day living. The principal rooms are on the first floor, which is accessed by a wonderful cantilevered stone staircase that rises from the ground floor, all the way up to a circular gallery beneath the dome. On the first floor, there are four reception rooms, a library and a smaller sitting room. All these rooms are ornamented with elaborate carving and deeply modelled plasterwork, the predominance of which was undertaken by Dick Reid, remembered for his work at Spencer House and Windsor Castle. The piano nobile also on the first floor is the

focal centrepiece and six bedrooms each with their own bathrooms are arranged around a gallery, on the second floor. The lower ground floor comprises of the kitchen, study, breakfast room, nursery, laundry and boot room with access to the cellars. The gardens, grounds and woodlands which make up the estate are extensive but in summary include the pool house, glasshouses, gardener’s bothy and potting shed, a gothic folly, 19th century ice house and spring water pump. Beyond the main house, the estate boasts: The Cave, a well presented Grade ll-listed property, which provides substantial accommodation; Pale Lodge, a four bedroom Grade ll-listed property; Horseshoe Lodge, a detached house which is believed to date from the late 18th century; one and two Horseshoe Cottages, semi-detached and each include two bedrooms; and Garden Cottage, a charming Grade ll-listed cottage situated within the Hall gardens. The Estate is offered for sale by private treaty. Enquiries should be made to Tony Morris-Eyton at Savills (01952 239 500; savills.co.uk)
