20. Abraham Lincoln Document Signed as President for Civil War Hospital Chaplain. Civil War–dated partlyprinted vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 19.5, March 20, 1863. President Lincoln appoints James Tuttle Smith as “Hospital Chaplain in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by President Abraham Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The blue War Department seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with fading to all of the handwriting, including Lincoln’s signature (which remains fully legible), and show-through from mounting remnants to reverse.

James Tuttle Smith (1831–1910) served as a military chaplain from 1862 to 1865 during the Civil War, and went on to become rector of the Church of the Resurrection in Manhattan from 1866 to 1888. A military appointment for an important position—one that brought comfort to the Union Army’s wounded and dying soldiers—this is just the second Lincoln commission for a hospital chaplain that we have offered. 22. U. S. Grant ALS to McPherson on Rebel Cavalry. Civil War-dated ALS signed “U. S. Grant, Maj. Gen.,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, March 11, 1863. Handwritten letter to Maj. Gen. James Birdseye McPherson, commander of the 17th Army Corps, in part: “Please have delivered the accompanying letter to Mrs. Duncan. Also send her from the captured mules the number that were taken from her husband’s place, or sufficient to work their place. Mrs. D. complains that parties of soldiers cross over in skiffs and annoy them very much. You will of course do all you can to prevent this. Charge Mr. Arthur particularly on this subject when you leave. There are said to be… Rebel Cavalry in the vicinity of Lake Washington; can you have them attended to?” In fine condition, with paper loss to one edge affecting a few words of text. Excellent Civil War content from Ulysses S. Grant as he looks out for the well-being of farming families affected by the conflict, and directs McPherson to take action against some Confederate cavalry. Starting Bid $200

Johnson, Greeneville, Tennessee,” on an off-white 6 x 8 sheet removed from an autograph album containing signatures of members of the 28th Congress (March 4, 1843–March 3, 1845). Also signed by Congressmen William Cochran McCauslen, Julius W. Blackwell, Paul Dillingam, Jr., Augustus A. Chapman, John Jameson, George William Summers, John Wentworth, Solomon Foot, and James Irvin. In fine condition, with two horizontal folds and a trimmed left edge. Starting Bid $200

Morgan, in part: “This will introduce you to his excellency, Mr. George K. Dauchy of Troy, an old college acquaintance of mine. He desires a commission in the line of some Regiment in the field. He has already seen service in this campaign, having commanded a company in the 2nd Kentucky Regt., which served for three months in the Division of Genl. McClellan. I believe Mr. Dauchy to be well qualified for a commission in the line & he will present himself for any examination that may be required.” In fine condition.
