RPS SE REGION NEWSLETTER February 2024

Welcome to the SE region February 2024 Newsletter 1. Introduction 2. What has happened in the SE region since the last newsletter 3. News in the region 4. Planned events for the next 10 months and a taste of future events 5. Hello to new members 6. Congratulations to new distinction holders: I have been told this report is not available, so I will be dropping this 1.Introduction Hello all and a belated happy new year to everyone. Many thanks to Paul Burgess who led the London Street Photography event and also took the 2 images above. 2.What has happened since the last newsletter? Paul’s event in London was very successful, so much so that we are going organise another one at the end of the year. Paul tells me that London is by far and away the best location for street photography, offering much more scope than other cities. The planned LRPS advisory day has now sold out after I offered it around other Regions and Special Interest Groups. 3.News in the Region I attended a meeting in Bristol at the beginning of February for all Regional and Special Interest Group heads. Our agenda was: 1.Agree the terms of reference for the groups which are currently out of date 2.Update a new financial model The proposed terms of reference were very prescriptive and the suggested major change was to allow groups to work outside of them with permission of the RPS CEO. In terms of the financial model, I am not sure if you are aware that the RPS donate a sum to each region every year. It is c.£1000 for the SE region. Given most regions have a fairly high positive bank balance, the proposal is to NOT donate this sum unless it is needed. They are also proposing to reduce the overall bank balance held by the groups. This proposal would not affect us unduly, nor most regions, however there was significant debate on what would the RPS use this money for. The CEO was confident that the system we should be using to put events up on their web site will show a major improvement at the end of this quarter. Time will tell. 4.Planned events for the next 6 months and a taste of future events We have set up a programme for the next 12 months based on the philosophy set out in November’s newsletter. Our philosophy is to provide free to attend events called click events. Sometimes you may be required to pay an entrance fee. A click event is focussed on a photogenic venue with a number of like minded people coming together to take images and socialise. We may opt to provide expert tuition via Zoom prior to some of these events. In addition to these events we will look at 1 or 2 Face to Face events with a tutor and 1 advisory day per annum. You will see the proposed programme based on this for the next 10 months, below.

RPS SE REGION NEWSLETTER February 2024

If you have any ideas for the region or want to help, contact me at southeast@rps.org. According to the terms of reference we should have a minimum of Regional Organiser, Financial Officer and a Secretary. We have the required number on the committee to make decisions, but ideally, we do need specific people for these above roles. The Finance role is not onerous at all with most of the work done by finance in RPS central. John Gough, RPS SE Regional Organiser
