HOW COOL IS IT TO STUDY ANOTHER CULTURE, COUNTRY OR REGION AND THEN EXPERIENCE THAT PLACE FIRSTHAND?

That’s what a Rose First Year International Experience (FYI) delivers. FYI is a faculty-led international adventure you’ll never forget and is designed for first-year students. In the spring and summer of 2021, FYI is offering three amazing opportunities: Japan, the U.K. and Belgium/The Netherlands. Study abroad experiences help you to become a better engineer, developing the core skills employers are looking for, such as an ability to collaborate in a diverse team or solve technical problems in unique environments. Studying STEM presents many opportunities for co-ops, internships and other industry experiences during your college career. Take advantage of international travel your first year, and leave room for industry experiences during your sophomore, junior and senior years. *Travel costs listed with each trip are estimates only and can fluctuate due to changes in airfare, currency values, and the number of students participating.

BELGIUM AND THE NETHERLANDS

You’ll take Introduction to Sustainability with Professors Jenny Mueller and Mark Minster to learn about the kinds of infrastructure and agriculture we’ll need to sustain our planet for 10 billion people well into the future. Then, during spring break, we’ll visit Belgium and the Netherlands, two countries leading the way in creating a sustainable future.

We’ll visit historic windmills, state-of-the-art windfarms, world-class farms and eco-power co-ops. We’ll tour climate resiliency infrastructure from medieval dikes and canals to newly restored wetlands. And, of course, we’ll hit plenty of cool cultural sites, including museums, breweries, chocolatiers and marketplaces. This class takes the fundamentals of sustainability and places them in historical, social, scientific and engineering contexts. After the trip, we’ll return to class to consider everything we learned and think about how we can improve on what’s being done. Travel dates: April 10-18, 2021 Estimated travel cost, including airfare: $2,900-$3,200*

JAPAN “To really be a good engineer, one must understand the world in which one works.” Ally Phillips, Class of 2017

You’ll study Japanese Society with Professor Paul Christensen in spring quarter of 2021, followed by a ten-day trip to Japan with your professor and your classmates. We’ll visit the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Himeji, each offering an unforgettable experience.

Tokyo: Experience how this global megacity is simultaneously a collection of small, interconnected villages. Kyoto: Learn why this city, rich with religious and cultural sites, is Japan’s spiritual center. Hiroshima: Tour the site of the atomic bomb blast that destroyed the city in World War II and discuss current U.S.-Japanese relations. Himeji: Discover Japan’s feudal samurai past. Japan is a perfect example of why international engineers and scientists need to directly engage in a country’s history, culture and society to ensure success.

Travel dates: May 31-June 10, 2021 Estimated travel cost, including airfare: $2,900-$3,200*

GREAT BRITAIN

You’ll take British Government and Politics with Professor Terrence Casey in spring 2021 followed by nine days in England and Scotland with your professor and your classmates.

We’ll visit key power centers in British politics, including the Houses of Parliament in London and the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. We’ll experience British politics up close and talk with politicians for personal insights. We’ll also visit world-class historical and cultural sites, including the British Museum, the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle, the National Gallery and the Cabinet War Rooms. You can’t truly understand your own political system until you understand another system, and this is an amazing opportunity to learn about the politics and culture of the country where much of the American political system finds its roots. Travel dates: May 30- June 9, 2021 Estimated travel cost for this invasion into British politics, including airfare: $3,700-$4,000*
