The interior design of any home should reflect the owners personality and taste. As an interior designer its my job to listen to what the client is trying to achieve, offer advice and ideas ensuring that the space is used most effectively to create rooms that flow and create the right atmosphere. Designing a unique in- dividual scheme by bringing together all ideas.

room & just property

Areas to consider: What you feel comfortable with, how you intend to use the space and of course the size of the room to make the best use of space. Large pieces of furniture will make a room look and feel smaller. So proportion is important. Choosing the right focal point, points or element for each room is important. Apart from the obvious focal wall, statement pieces such as lighting, individual style chairs, piece of furniture, texture, colour can create the right atmosphere and style. Mirrors positioned on left right or facing wall will depth, and other dimension light to a room, making it more spacious.

Mixing styles is most effective. A mixture of contemporary and traditional style will give a unique identity to any interior. The attention to detail with finishing touches is what makes a room unique, creates luxury, opulence or a theme etc.

Key pieces of furniture, and well chosen accessories, lighting and wall coverings bring a look together. Custom furniture adds to the feel of luxury within a home.

Lighting plays an essential part in interiors and its so important to get it right as it creates the atmosphere, feel and look of a room.

People enjoy the social space that open plan living offers, which is created by integrating living spaces together. This will certainly make any home appear larger and spacious. Using space and colour well is crucial. While most people know what they like when they se it, they find it difficult to visualise the actual interior design aspect: colours, textures, fabrics etc and furnishings together. When I am working on a project I visualise wandering through the particular room I am creating, seeing everything in position, then I know the overall design will work. It is up to me to help the client visualise exactly how the finished room will look. That’s why I supply a sample board and not a mood board, to let the client see the layout of the room, and all furnishing fabric etc that will be used on the project.

A museum of thoughts Opened in 1999 and re-established 10 years later as Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture, the Lighthouse's reputation is renowned by students, professionals and industry insiders at home and overseas. What isn't so well known is the fact that the centre is open to the general public too!...

Housed in the former offices of the Glasgow Herald, the neon lit entrance surfacing in the narrow, cobbled Mitchell Lane, the Lighthouse is an impressive and refreshing addition to the landscape of council run education and resource initiatives; an alternative to the relic museums that already enrich our cultural environment. Don't be mislead by the title, you don't need to be involved in the worlds of Architecture or Design to be allowed to access this centre or to find it interesting - this is a relaxing and very welcoming setting for what I consider to be a 'museum of thoughts.'

An overflowing calendar of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and shows covering a wide spectrum of design concepts ensures that there are many reasons to visit the Lighthouse. Come and have a look even if you are just curious about seeing Glasgow as you may have never seen it before.

The Lighthouse offers FREE entry, unrestricted access via a lift to six of the seven floors and a welcome to all. Pick up a directory from the front desk and off you go... I intended to be in there for a half hour tops and reluctantly left after three hours but I could happily have stayed for three more.

The facilities include space for study, research and maybe surprisingly to shop for designer home wares, with icon laden TOJO on the ground floor, and exclusive Glasgow centric gifts and 'Toshie' Mackintosh on level 3. You might even be tempted to take in the city skyline or something from the tasty menu in the casual restaurant on Level 5.

Take advantage of the perfect opportunity and visit the Lighthouse on Doors Open Day in September.

Although the main attractions are the permanent and temporary exhibitions and workshops contained in this inspired choice of location - the first public commission for architect, designer and then Draughtsman Charles Rennie Mackintosh whilst apprenticed to Architectural firm Honeyman and Keppie - glimpses of the original features blended with the modern are a permanent display in their own right, encouraging you to spend as much time looking up, down, around and in between the actual activities. The flow of the building made digesting the influx of stimuli an education by subtle osmosis!

The Lighthouse is housed in a stunning transformation of the former Glasgow Herald building, Mackintosh's first public com- mission. For Doors Open Day come and explore architecture and design related exhibitions and events and the tower, with a fantastic city view.

It's a Square - Not a Pixel! The designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh have one thing in common with the computer. They both have simple geometry at the heart of their practice. He called it a square – The computer calls it a pixel! It's Our Playground will be leading a Saturday workshop combining geometry and product design to update some familiar designs. An online exhibition will exhibit the works together forming a new Mackintosh-esque interior.

CRM DESIGNED THE PERFECT BUILDING, THE LIGHTHOUSE CREATED THE PERFECT CONCEPT. The MAKLAB.

DREAM IT | DESIGN IT | MAK IT 21st century meets the industrial era, a natural incubator for your ideas and creativity. Hi Tec Concepts come to life every Saturday in the MAKLAB, the only facility of it's kind in the UK, Memberships for extended access are available. Just ask for a tour of the facilities and full details. PLUS Internet access in the round tower and the first of the many spaces available for your next exhibition, function or workshop.

Next door to the impressive second floor space available for workshops and exhibitions is the much utilised and fascinating Sustainable Materials Reference Library. I found myself rooting through the array of exhibits and information, agog at the selection of eco options that are available. A very necessary resource for a forward thinking community, I developed a greater appreciation, insight and optimism for the effort that is going into making the future of applications for architecture, a greener one. I took my leave from level 2 with Henry, one of my photographers, salivating over the text books and material samples (studying architectural photography, the centre was akin to catnip to a kitten for him).

Obviously the centre plays homage to CRM with a gallery/exhibition, known as the 'Mack' Centre, devoted to his plethora of achievements. But be warned it is the only display of his work that sufferers of Vertigo will perhaps remember more than most (see level 7 )

The jewel in the coronet for me was 'FOUNDATION' - Glasgow the Story of a city. Engaging, fun and as a born and bred Glaswegian, a huge eye opener in more ways than one. well worth the ticket price. An ingeniously simple and visually enthralling 'story of our city's tale' on Level 4.

Ewan established his own practice in 2009 after years of leading accolade winning design teams worldwide. Now based in Glasgow and Perth he accepts domestic and commercial commissions throughout the UK, spe cialising in Passive House and Sustainable Design projects. Recent Awards. 2011 architects journal Small projects "High Commendation" and 2011 Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Award, Winner: Small Works category, both were presented for the Capel Manor guest pavilion in Kent. According to Cameron; “Passive House Design involves designing a building which is very energy efficient, it takes a very low heating requirement and ultimately shouldn’t even require a heating system in addition to the incorporated mechanical heat recovery system.” Simpler passive design strategies also help minimise energy expenditure such as pointing the building southwards to maximise the amount of heat gained straight from the sun. Interestingly for potential clients through the clever application of a little mathematics it ,

can be worked out how long it will take for any additional initial expenditure to be saved back via lower energy bills. “There are a number of different ways to present a sustainable solution, as an architect I chose the passive house system because I felt it was a scientific approach that you could demonstrate, through calculations, a lower energy requirement.” Having successfully worked globally in places such as India, Singapore, and Hong Kong Cameron is well placed to comment on the impact different cultures can and as it would, should have on design particularly in relation to the award winning houses in Suzhou, mainland China. “I had started the project as a minimalist Western designer with maybe preconceived ideas of what everyone is going to like but I very quickly realised that you have to look at the design culture of the area and where the client is based and where they are actually from and allow it to inform your own design process.”

It is probably therefore apt, considering the combin-ation of modern and longstanding architecture which fills this city, that when asked if there were any changes he would make to the iconic ‘Lighthouse’ building where he has an office, “nothing came to mind!”. “It is obviously an iconic building in Glasgow. You can see how elegant and sculptural the tower and the metal work are from the original Mackintosh building but I think Page & Park did a fantastic job in creating the atrium space adjacent to it, which brings up to date the way the building is experienced in terms of bringing in floods of natural daylight and opening up these fantastic views from the viewing platform at the top of the building. It is a pleasure to work here.” Having wanted to be an architect as he puts it; “from a young boy” he has the enthusiasm for his particular architectural product which comes across best when you look at his method. “The idea is never to take a prescriptive solution and really enjoy being almost an editor of the client’s ideas and try to let them drive the project to a degree because it’s more interesting. You will end up with a building you didn’t anticipate yourself and you will end up with something that’s just quite unique. You can then stand back and say ‘well isn’t it great that the client and the situation brought something that really gave it its character at the end”.

RENTAL DEPOSITS NOW PROTECTED IN SCOTLAND The first ever Scottish Government approved deposit protection scheme, the Letting Protection Service Scotland (The LPS Scotland) launches today, marking a new era for the Scottish rental market. The LPS Scotland received approval from the Scottish Government in April of this year to run the scheme as a result of new legislation which will ensure tenancy deposits are safely protected, and which could save Scottish tenants between £2.3 and £3.6 million a year1. The Scottish Government's Review of the Private Rented Sector (March 2009)

Dependent on when the deposit is received. Visit www.lettingprotectionscotland.com for guidance and compliance calculator The law comes in response to research that suggested 11,000 tenants in Scotland could have had part or all of their deposits unfairly withheld each year2. Landlords and letting agents are now required to protect deposits with a third party protection scheme such as The LPS Scotland by November 2012. Kevin Firth, Director of The LPS Scotland, commented: "We are delighted to be launching today. We have over ten years custodial deposit protection experience and we have come up with a number of useful tools to help landlords, letting agents and tenants understand the legislation and make sure they are protected." "It is crucial that those in the private rented sector don't fall foul of this legislation. It is now compulsory for landlords and letting agents in Scotland to protect their deposits with an approved third party scheme and landlords can face legal action with fines up to three times the deposit paid by the tenant if they don't comply Landlords and letting agents can follow three quick and simple steps to ensure that they can comply with the regulations and easily manage their deposits: • Register online at www.lettingprotectionscotland.com; • Use our Timeline for Compliance calculator on the homepage, to make sure deposits are protected in line with Government timescales; • Submit deposits via The LPS Scotland website, or by post;

room & just property

Landlords and letting agents will be able to view and manage all deposits registered with The LPS Scotland online throughout the duration of the tenancy. Glasgow Property Letting Ltd have been protecting the deposits of their tenants in Scotland using services provided by The LPS Scotland sister company The Deposit Protection Services (The DPS), and have nearly 70 Scottish deposits already lodged with the scheme. Colin Macmillan, Managing Director, of Glasgow Property Letting Ltd said: "It's really positive for our lettings industry that the Scottish Government has introduced tenancy deposit protection legislation in line with the rest of the UK. "We've been protecting deposits since 2008 even though, as a Scottish agency, we haven't been required to until now. We feel very strongly about the peace of mind and reassurance that deposit protection offers our clients, both landlords and tenants alike. Our deposits were previously held with The DPS who are run by the same company as The LPS Scotland, so we can be sure of their experience and are confident that our tenants' deposits will continue to be protected to the highest level." A range of useful resources to assist landlords, tenants and letting agents with getting to grips with this new legislation can be found on the LPS Scotland website. Landlords and letting agents are in with the chance to win a day at the races when they register their deposits with The LPS Scotland at www.lettingprotectionscotland.com, between 2nd July and 31st August. The lucky winners will receive a VIP day out for themselves and four guests and receive five star treatment at Ayr Racecourse with hospitality tickets to the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Opening Day on 20th September 2012. The prize includes club badge, racecard, Bucks Fizz reception, four course lunch, afternoon tea, drinks package and private betting facilities.
