SAFETY FIRST™ Safety First is a custom-made, dialogue-supporting tool for companies that want to develop and improve their safety culture.

WHEN THE EVERYDAY BUSTLE TAKES OVER

All employees know the rules. But bustle, routines, corporate culture, or working with sub-contractors can be a challenge to maintaining a strong safety culture. Grey zones and gradual divergences from procedures emerge and make it necessary to restore employee focus on safety.

The Safety First dialogue tool focuses on the attitudes that lead to actions, which compromise safety. It is a dialogue-supporting tool that is used to remind everybody about why safety rules are as they are, and to discuss how they work in practice. The tool is used to talk openly about the things that can be difficult to find an occasion - or the courage - to talk about in the everyday bustle. And it creates a shared understanding and supports suggestions for local improvements of safety procedures.

THE TOOL

Safety First is adjusted to each company’s special circumstances in collaboration with HR or the department responsible for health and safety at work. Participants debate in small groups. They discuss the status of statements like “If I think that a safety rule makes no sense, I do what I find best.”. Or “If a colleague does something dangerous then it is his own responsibility”. The tool involves employees in maintaining a strong safety culture in which everybody acts responsibly and cooperates on finding the best safety solutions.

FACTS

▪▪ It is a simple and efficient tool to involve many employees. ▪▪ It is aimed at everyone that is affected by safety procedures. ▪▪ It takes 2-4 hours to go through a whole process with the tool, and it can be used by groups of four-five people at a time. But many groups can work simultaneously in the same setting. ▪▪ It is easy to use and only requires a short introduction. ▪▪ It can be adjusted to fit the specific requirements of your organisation in collaboration with the department responsible for health and safety at work and/or HR.
