CITY OF LIGHT, DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE

Partners DDW Trespa Stad Eindhoven Design Coöperatie Brainport

Eindhoven is sometimes called the ‘City of Light’ of the North, as the city’s explosive growth since the end of the 18th century has been closely linked to that of Philips. During WOII several historical parts were destroyed and the following modern reconstruction replaced many buildings in the centre. Today, the face of Eindhoven is rapidly changing, showing a new sense of self-confidence. But old sites certainly aren’t being forgotten. A unique amount of industrial heritage of which mainly former industrial Philips buildings, are converted and re-used by up-and-coming sectors such as technology and design. Eindhoven is now a major technology research and educational hub with amongst others a large University of Technology. But it isn’t just a city with high-tech activities. In the 2000s decade, the city emerged as the capital of Dutch industrial design. Due to the fame of Design Academy Eindhoven, dubbed ‘The School of Cool’, Eindhoven has been able to grow in the design industry with such events as the annual Dutch Design Week – the largest design event in The Netherlands. Every October around 1500 international designers show their work, from disciplines such as industrial design, concept design, graphic design, textile & fashion, fooddesign – and ... architecture!

CENTRAL STATION EINDHOVEN KOEN VAN DER GAAST location function contributed by

Eindhoven (1956) train station Gemeente_Eindhoven

The current station building was built in 1956 by design of architect Koen van der Gaast and resembles a Philips radio at that time. In the view of Van der Gaast a train station had to get a prominent role in the city compared to other transport systems. Not the human dimension was the starting point, but the urban space was the decisive factor in the measurements. Another striking aspect of his vision was that the station had to have absolutely no recreational function, it was only intended as a pedestrian space: the transition from one transport to another. The station is located in the district Fellenoord. At about 900 meters from the station the Philips Stadion, PSV Stadium. On the central side of the station is a statue of Anton Philips, the father of Frits Philips.

DE BIJENKORF GIO PONTI, THEO BOOSTEN location function contributed by

Eindhoven (1969) shopping center archlab

For the de Bijenkorf façade Giò Ponti tested a little 3-dimensional tile coloured in different variants of green. A colour arranged with openings in the shape of stretched hexagons, also applied for the Concattedrale in Taranto and for the San Carlo hospital chapel in Milan. It is said that Ponti got his inspiration for this facade, while flying over The Netherlands, and looking at the water-lined green landschape below. Even though the Bijenkorf wanted only 3 laysers, in the urban plan 4 layers was more fitting. Therefore the upper layer has hardly any volume, and is only facade. Up until now, an extension to the 4th floor has never been realized.

Eindhoven (2004) shopping centre, square Gemeente_Eindhoven

The existing seventies shopping centre has been redeveloped and enlarged. The project is situated in the post-war city centre of Eindhoven, next to the monumental Bijenkorf building by Gio Ponti. The public passage that connects the north part and the south of the centre Eindhoven is articulated by a glass roof that extends over the square in front of the building. The original square Piazza was designed by Gio Ponti, with seating on the square of the Italian artist Negri. Part of it has now moved to the side of the Bijenkorf. Ventilating units of the basement were hidden in a artwork consisting of a set of stainless steel tubes, by Frans Gast. This has now been reinstated in the Henri Dunant Park.

Eindhoven (2008) housing, mixed-use development, renovation Robin

The Lichttoren (light tower) is actually the 7-sided tower on top of this building. First completed in 1920 by architects D. Roosenburg and L.S.P. Scheffer, it served as one of Philips’ light bulb factories. The tower on top was used as a testing facility for the bulbs, until the 70s when Philips first started moving its production facilities away from the Netherlands. Finally, in 1998, Philips left the building, which it had used as an office. The redevelopment finally started in 2006, according to a plan that called for a several mixed functions. With these very diverse uses, the city of Eindhoven has aimed to use it to create a more urban atmosphere in its centre. The concrete structure, high ceilings, and large windows make it an icon, a symbol for Eindhoven’s industrial past and as such it has been declared a monument. Trudo, the owner of the building, added several new parts to the building during its redevelopment, which are instantly recognisable.

AWG ARCHITECTEN ARCHITECTURE OFFICE location field architect(s)

Antwerpen (Belgium) urban planning, housing, utilitarian bOb Van Reeth, Christine de Ruijter, Filip Delanghe, Geert Driesen, Ilse Van Berendoncks, Jan Verrelst

AWG stands for “Architecten Werk Groep”, established in 1972 by b0b Van Reeth and re-established under the name awg architects in 2001 by b0b Van Reeth, Geert Driesen, Filip Delanghe, Christine de Ruijter, Ilse Van Berendoncks and Jan Verrelst. awg architects -– also active in the Netherlands for the last 18 years – unites 34 architects and city planners, with varied education and training in order to create interdisciplinary, cooperative projects as one team. For awg architects, architecture is the pursuit of architecture. Architecture is about solving spatial problems through specific analyses, each of which is characterized by a particular approach. Initially, we explore every project by developing a mentality pertinent to each individual issue. Every project is in and of itself a force for creative exploration/ investigation. In other words, architecture is always about the particularity of a location, of its moment in time, of its nature. The spirit of a place lies in creative discovery of its concrete possibilities.

WITTE DAME DIEDERENDIRRIX, D. ROOSENBURG location function contributed by

Eindhoven (1997) culture, education, library, office Norbert_van_Onna

With the transformation of the Turin Lingotto factories in mind, a former factory of Philips designed by Dirk Roosenburg in 1928, was converted into a multifunctional building for design, art, knowledge and technology: the Witte Dame (White Lady). Public initiative saved the building from demolition. The unofficial monument has been conserved by using it for new functions, including the accommodation of the Design Academy, the main branch of the public library, and a design department of Philips Lighting. The biggest intervention is the transformation of the middle section. The central entrance, including a number of shared facilities, has been situated at an important point in the city’s layout: on the axis of the route from the city centre via the Licht Square to the Philips Stadium. A crucial point in the renovation of the White Lady is that the building has been changed as little as possible. The look of the façade and the way the floor areas are stacked have remained unchanged.

HOUSING TOWER ADMIRANT DAM & PARTNERS ARCHITECTEN location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2006) housing, office Gemeente_Eindhoven

Next to De Admirant (the former Philips tower) Dam & Partners designed this residential and office tower that marks the centre of Eindhoven like a large white sculpture. The way the building is situated in its environment excludes the incidence of 90° angles. The angled shape, glass corners and sloping roof still suggests a degree of slenderness, but dense concrete façade has yet again something rude. In particular, the connection to the public area is a true shame. This building adds absolutely nothing to the experience of public space: a closed wall with an entrance as a mouse-hole.

REGENT VAN AKEN ARCHITECTEN location function contributed by

Eindhoven (1999) commercial space, housing Robin

De Regent was, in a sense, a pioneer for high-rise buildings in Eindhoven. During the design and construction process, it was the tallest building in Eindhoven, surpassing a Philips building that had been the number one for 35 years. Shortly after its completion, a number of other high rises appeared in Eindhoven, both in the centre and outlying neighbourhoods. Hence, it is no longer the tallest building, though its top floor ‘34’ is still the highest floor number in Eindhoven. The base is home to commercial space.

This gallery is situated along the Kleine Berg in area De Bergen, directly neighbouring the city centre. The street image is diverse with traditional as well as modern buildings. The binding aspect between these diverse buildings is the limited width. The mission was to create a two storey gallery on a former terrace lot of 25 square meters. The entrance had to be connected to the street and the first floor had to connect to the original residence of the owner/occupier. The original building was made in the 1920s ans is symmetrical by design. The entire gallery radiates transparency.

Dynamo is a regional institution for youth welfare and organizes different activities like music, sports, workshops, and other cultural activities. It also offers information for young people on schooling, help with housing, financial administration support, finding a job, etc. The building has much to offer: a large pop music stage, a fitness centre, lounge-area, several bars, meeting space and information desks. All these functions together make it a very dense community-based spot in an urban setting. The volume is a composition of glass and concrete elements which have 12 different color tones and opens up at the corner of 2 streets. This entrance leads to the central meeting hall, the atrium, which is at the same time one of the stages used for performances and acts. The large ‘urban window’ gives pedestrians a view inside and invites them to join. Everyone can organize their own party, gathering, concert or sports-event themselves in this multifunctional building.

MERCADO BUILDING JEANNE DEKKERS ARCHITECTUUR location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2003) office Norbert_van_Onna

Jo Coenen’s master plan for the Smalle Haven area in Eindhoven included several Municipal Offices. The building exterior matches the diversity of the plan and connects its various components both visually and structurally. The heart of the building is a ‘city room’: a partly roofed outdoor space that serves as the entrance vestibule. An arcade connects all of the adjacent buildings. The building exterior, with its vertical bond brick façade, is simple and robust. The entrance, city garden and city room have transparent façades. Vertical windows - floor to ceiling in the cockpits to the back - emphasize the verticality and give the façades rhythm. The windows are pushed back and fit with stainless steel frames that add light and transparency to the façades. Though the building does not look particularly uniform from the outside, it does on the inside.

MEDINA NEAVE BROWN location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2003) commercial space, housing, office Robin ADDRESS

While Neave Brown is mostly known for his work in London, he also designed this structure in Eindhoven. The master plan for the Smalle Haven area designed by Jo Coenen, called for a highdensity low-rise residential structure at the foot of his Vesteda Tower. Neave Brown designed the Medina as an oasis of green and quiet in a hectic city; with two very distinct sides. There is the urban wall, which is 8 storeys high, faces the busy Vestdijk and is also home to commercial space at its base. The other side, on ‘t College is much lower, quiet and more like a residential street, although there is commercial space here, too. The terraces structure itself thus becomes a transition from the busy city to the calm residential area. There is also a parking garage inside. Through balconies, terraces and patios, each home has its own outside space, many of which are adorned by hanging plants. In total there are 73 apartments, 260 parking spaces, and 2000m² of commercial space.

DESIGN HOUSE TER HAAR VAN LING ARCHITECTEN, J. KRUGER location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2007) exposition space, shop, renovation Gemeente_Eindhoven

This building was originally built as a district court in 1964. It marks just the transition from traditional to modern thinking about architecture in Eindhoven, and is the link between the old and the new city hall. Architect J. Kruger modelled two volumes around an indoor space: a formal straight-front with offices and a building section with courtrooms and meeting rooms. The connection between these two parts is marked with deep cuts on both sides of the building. During the Dutch Design Week of 2007 the Design House officially opened its doors for the public. The former district court converted into a building which can be used as a shop and exposition space, offering changing exhibitions on modern design products. While the appearance of the building barely changed the interior got a metamorphose to satisfy the requirements of a museum.

Eindhoven (1969) government, office Gemeente_Eindhoven

J.A. van der Laan (brother of Dom van der Laan) wins in a 1938 competition for a new City Hall. The outbreak of the war did little right in the city hall plans. In 1939, however, the council and citizenry increasingly criticized the architecture of Van der Laan, it was not modern enough. Van der Laan also admitted that a 1939 plan did not fit in 1957, and made a new design. There have been mixed critiques on this work. Because of the sudden shift in his style, Van der Laan was more often attacked on his design integrity. In 2002 the town hall was totally renovated by architecten en|en and Staal/Christensen. By applying a large glass roof, one of the never-executed design variants of van der Laan, the courtyard garden, has returned in a new form.

RIETVELD BILLBOARD GERRIT RIETVELD location function contributed by

Eindhoven (1962) art, exposition space, sculpture, busstop Norbert_van_Onna

The city of Eindhoven gave Rietveld the contract to design a billboard for Eindhoven’s neighbourhoods in 1962. It should inform residents about ongoing cultural events, musical performances and exhibitions. Rietveld designed a billboard with concrete roof, wall and floor. On the column posters of exhibitions, music and theater were pasted. On a horizontal white bar dates and locations were announced. On the back, the map of the area and the city, to see where the events were held. It was neglected and forgotten until 1989 when it rediscovered and moved to the City Hall. Now, every now and then, artists, architects, photographers, designers and other creative persons are invited to design some new promotion for the ‘billboard’, and the image of this small building changes with the new activities in town.

Eindhoven (2003) museum, renovation MI_MOA

The ‘new’ Van Abbemuseum is comprised of the renovated landmark building by architect A.J. Kropholler, dating from 1936, and two new sections. Both the renovation and structural alterations to the older part of the museum as well as the new sections are by the Dutch architect Abel Cahen. He has succeeded in organically integrating the old building into a new and larger complex. Despite its monumental character, the new building maintains the human dimensions so characteristic of the former museum. Massive installations or sizeable exhibitions as well as smaller intimate projects - such as showings of prints and drawings - can all be presented thanks to the variety of the exhibition areas. Cahen’s distinctive design makes a notable contribution to Dutch museum architecture. The museum also has a whole range of new facilities, created by the Belgian designer Maarten van Severen including an auditorium and an education centre, which will accommodate a wide spectrum of public events.

JUST YOUR KIND OF THING JOHN KÖRMELING location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2006) art, bridge, pavilion MI_MOA

Since 8 April 2006, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is connected to the Stratumsedijk by way of a bridge shaped like a bright pink house. The bridge is designed and built by Eindhoven artist and architect John Körmeling, commissioned by the Van Abbemuseum. This work of art – entitled ‘Echt iets voor u’ – is the shortest covered bridge in the world. The bright pink house and bridge has the words ‘Echt iets voor u’ (Just your kind of thing) on the roof top in in twinkling lights. It is a remarkable, inviting eye‑catcher that makes the area behind the museum lively, attractive and characteristic, even at night. The bridge gives you direct access to the open-air café on the banks of the river Dommel. John Körmeling is represented in the Van Abbemuseum collection with several works. He is also responsible for one of the rooms in Plug In, the new approach to presenting the museum’s collection

EFFENAAR MVRDV, ANTHONY KLEINEPIER, BOB COPRAY location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2005) restaurant, music theatre, culture, bar boeboe

The Effenaar is one of several professional Pop Music venues in the Netherlands that have renewed their buildings, or, in this case built a new house for their programme. MVRDV got the assignment to make a bold, open-minded and alternative building. The interior design-duo Anthony Kleinepier and Bob Copray made the whole interior. They had to take care of several ‘hufterproof’ (vandalism-proof) elements, like entrance desk, toilets, wardrobe and bars. Inside the rather heavilybuilt building and course finishing they placed these interior elements like individual objects or furniture. Many are coated with an epoxy top layer, and give them a touch-ability. The multidisciplinary Dutch design office Fabrique has made the new visual identity, a dynamic new house-style for publications like posters, flyers and the website. Also the signposts in interior and exterior are designed by Fabrique.

Literally and figuratively an exciting design, which is much more related to the space around it than to the buses that are covered. This structure provides uniformity in relation to the trainstation. The busstation consists of 13 bus platform (A through M). Each bus platform has an electronic information sign which displays the line number and destination of two buses. There is a large canopy with benches where people can wait for their bus. At the main entrance of the station is a billboard with a map and departures of buses. These architects often work with special structures in public space, such as bridges, viaducts and stadiums.

This building is a landmark at the head of the JF Kennedylaan. It is an exciting construction of glass and steel. From the outside, the construction is noticeable because the walls are made of glass from floor to ceiling. The tension is further increased because the upper part of the tower is wider than the lower part. The faรงade itself consists of a double skin: an outer skin of glass and then 60 inches wide ventilated cavity and finally the inner skin of double glazing.

KENNISPOORT KOEN VAN VELSEN location function contributed by

The Kennispoort (Knowledge Gate) came to be through a collaboration between the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the Eindhoven chamber of commerce, which it houses, in the south-west corner of the TU/e campus. The concept behind the seven storey building is that several cuts have been taken out of the volume. On the south-east side for instance, a cut was taken out of the building to emphasize the walking and biking route to the TU/e. Inside, spaces are organised around a two-storey high ground floor. Underneath is a parking garage. The faรงade is covered in smooth brickwork, which was glazed, specially developed for this project. The architect spent a lot of attention to the details, which is apparent especially in the faรงade and inside in the woodwork. At night, the building is lit up in various colours.

VERTIGO DEPARTMENT ARCHITECTURE BUILDING AND PLANNING DIEDERENDIRRIX location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2002) university Robin

Vertigo was originally home to the faculty of chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology, but nowadays it houses the faculty of architecture, building and planning. The original structure was built in 1956, but was in drastic need of updating when the faculty of architecture moved in. Renovation began in 2000 and was completed in 2001. Because it used to be occupied with laboratories and such, the ceilings are very high at 5,08m. This was untouched for the most part, except where the atrium was created and as a result more floor space was needed. A large staircase was added to the front of the building, which doubles as a lecture hall. The building was covered in clear and green silkscreened glass, much like the university library in Utrecht. The interior was also redone.

Eindhoven utilitarian, housing, urban, interior Paul Diederen, Bert Dirrix

diederendirrix is an architectural office, situated in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, with extensive experience in the fields of utilitarian building, housing, urban planning, residences and interior. Because of a strong loyalty to the wishes and ideas of the client, diederendirrix looks for both an effective and an individualistic interpretation of the commission. Clarifying the complexity and the synthesis of contradictory interests constitute the core quality of our design approach. This research and interdisciplinary attitude results in inventive and striking buildings and architectural plans. Our work is mostly located in the urban centre, where high density is the main subject. In these area it is always about the transformation of the urban structure. Often the result is a combination of new buildings and the redevelopment of existing buildings. The designs show an interesting layering of different functions. Our work is expressive, subtly sculptural. Buildings are imagined from a clear convincing ground form. Concepts such as simplicity, compactness, with maximum visual power and clear urban design characterize our work.

Eindhoven (1999) laboratorium, university Rudy-Uytenhaak

Cascade is the laboratory building for the Faculty of Physics at the Technical University of Eindhoven. The building lies on the dividing line between the campus and a forest area. The structure functions as a terrace along the landscape. Special in this building are façades that are visually very contrasting. Adjusted to their setting and the sun, the east and north façades have a very open character, while the east and south façades are more closed and outfitted with black masonry by own design. The openings in the façade have white marble fins as sunscreens, which are horizontally placed in the south façade and vertically in the west façade for optimal sun blockage. In a second phase, a ‘Technology Building’ was realised on the north side of the Cascade Laboratory.

At Lakerlopen’s edge was a left-over space which successive urban development plans of the city had proposed as a suitable site for two large, autonomous blocks that differ from the adjoining garden village by their position and shape. Both are positioned at a right angle to the rectangular layout of the garden village. One of them points its long façade more or less to the Tongerlesestraat, the other to the Paulus Potterstraat. Together these streets delineate the garden village on this side. Each of the two blocks contains 23 apartments. The massiveness of both volumes, evoked by their brick cladding, conceals the fact that they are essentially gallery-access flats. The galleries are hidden from view by the brick façade with a different composition for each floor and aluminiumframed openings. The integrated sun blinds, and the balconies that appear to stick out of the brick façades, enhance the buildings’ sturdy character.

Philips Stadion is the 35.119 seater stadium of football club, PSV Eindhoven (Philips Sport Vereniging (Philips Sports Union), first inaugurated in 1913. Located in the Philipsdorp (‘Philips village’) and part of the Eindhoven borough of Strijp. The current design is made by Van den Pauwert architects, in 1987. In 2002 the PSV organization wanted to realize more seating and visiting supporters were placed in a different angle, not next to the PSV supporters. According to the architect T. van Aken decided to extend the stadium at the corners. He brought new face-defining elements, the pylons, which also provides a column free bearer for maximum visibility from the corners. One specific seat (Section D, Row 22, Seat 43) is kept permanently empty. This was the seat occupied by former Philips chairman Frits Philips as he chose not to use any of the VIP facilities and instead took his place in the crowd. After his death (at the age of 100) in 2005, his seat is kept empty as a tribute.

Showroom and offices housed in listed industrial building. Office outfitter Desque found accommodation in the ‘Klokgebouw’ in the Strijp-S area in Eindhoven. This imposing, industrial listed building formerly housed the Philips factory. The main inspiration during the refurbishment was based on the transformation from production area to home base for a creative design and interior decorating company. The new interior blends naturally into the industrial environment. M+R decided on clean lines and sustainable materials. The striking concrete structure was bared and kept in view. The prominent entrance consists of a large empty space with a sculptural stairway. The stairs lead to an area specially designed for meetings, relaxing and consultations, which in turn seamlessly merges into an elevation, from where you have a splendid view of the furniture and design products in the Desque range. In this almost unspoilt industrial environment these products definitely come into their own.

Eindhoven (2004) housing, market, office, police station diederendirrix

Commissioned by the city council in conjunction with a project developer and a housing corporation, a very diverse programme has been realized in Woensel-West, a problem area in Eindhoven, consisting of fifty apartments, 3000 m2 of offices, studios, a market hall where stalls can be rented by the metre, a police station, and an official area for prostitution. On the Baekeland Square side, the exterior of the complex has been made hard and slick in order to block off the traffic on the ring road. Behind this smooth shell the complex opens up around a collective deck with parking space underneath. The prostitution area, a regulated version of activities that were already taking place here, is situated out of the way, with its back to the houses. Here, the studios are the buffer between this fringe of society and normal life. This mix of unlike functions and the way in which the complex stands out from its environment make the Baekeland Square a typical Eindhoven project.

PHILIPS HEADQUARTERS LIAG ARCHITECTS location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2005) office, renovation Thomas_Boegl

The head office of Philips Electronics Netherlands was designed in 1965 by architects firm Roosenburg-Verhave-Luyt-de Longh (currently LIAG). The office floors are suspended on external suspension stays, which are anchored on enormous steel cross beams that translate the forces to the core of the building. The core is constructed of a central stabiliser core and two end cores, containing stairwells, lift shafts and vertical transport ducts. Philips chose LIAG for the renovation/redesign of the high-rise and a replacement building for the low-rise. The new building was placed like a glass envelope over these sections. What was previously exterior has now become interior. The lighting in/ around the building was given special attention. Openings in the roof are used to light up the base of the building. This has transformed the head office into a beacon light for Philips in the city of Eindhoven.

Between 2005 and 2007 the theatre was completely renovated and extended with the new multifunctional Philips Hall. For the renovation and building the firm Architecten en I en was called in. The design for the multifunctional Philips Hall was inspired by the Teatro Central in Sevilla. This theatre was built on the occasion of the world exhibition in 1989. The former Stadsschouwburg Eindhoven was opened in 1964. Architects Cees Geenen and Leo Oskam had created a, for that time, unique building of rich resources and grandeur. In the 1990’s the theatre needed a thorough evaluation, which resulted in a list of serious defects: Noise pollution from the Globetheater to the Grote Zaal and vice versa, poor visibility and limited dÊcor possibilities in the Globetheater, high temperatures in the building, asbestos and an outdated air control system. In September 1995 the town council agreed on plans for the renovation and the construction of new buildings.

Quist was asked to design a water tower with a capacity of 1500 m続. Quist decided to construct three white steel spherical water tanks each with a diameter of ten meters and a capacity of 500 m続. The three balls were placed on different heights on the steel structure, and the whole structure is about 44 metre high. Because Quist clearly wanted to show how the watertower was put together, the connection lines remained visible. In 2000, the proposal of the city of Eindhoven to transform the three white balls into three giant footballs - as part of the European Championship held in the Netherlands - led to great protests from the architect, and was called off.

A building is more than only a sum of functions. The art is to combine different wishes of the users in the right manner so the diverse functions of a building reinforce each other. In a good design ideas and wishes merge together so a new building or a new neighbourhood will come alive. KdV gives her creativity and attention to the design and to the process. In the cooperation in teams, with partners and future users the best ideas and solutions will work out. KdV locate the balance between custom made and future value. Because a building can fit the current users as a tailored suit but futures users can think completely different about it. How do you take care that dwellings and buildings keep their value towards tomorrow? KdV realizes buildings that can grow with the demands and wishes of the time.

WY building on the Philips High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, with more than 25,000sqm is one of the largest buildings of Philips Research. Together with the adjacent building WB, it’s an iconic element on the campus for its central location and size 9-storeys. WY building dates from 1968 and was originally built as a laboratory. To future-proof the building a rigorous refurbishment was done. The laboratories are replaced by offices, combined with testing facilities and electronics labs. The building is in use as a multi-tenant building with multiple users both from Philips Research and abroad. Later extensions in the low-rise are removed. A new entrance is created: a thin and transparent volume. The entrance is linked to a whole new elevator core. The former elevator cores are replaced by new toilets. The façades had some major surgery done, like opening the heads with large windows. In addition, the existing wooden frames were completely replaced by much thinner aluminium frames.

The Evoluon is a conference centre and former science museum erected by Philips in Eindhoven. The building is unique due to its very futuristic design, resembling a landed flying saucer. The building was based on an idea by Frits Philips, who originally made a sketch of the building on a paper napkin. Frits wanted to give the people of Eindhoven a beautiful and educational gift to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the company that bears his family name. Its concrete dome is 77m in diameter. In the 1960s and 70s it attracted large visitor numbers, since its interactive exhibitions were a new and unique concept at that time. But after several years of losing visitors and money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference center, opening in 1998.

The urban layout of Bosrijk is based on living clustered in green areas. As a sculpture in a garden, each cluster in the public park presents itself individually. Such a structure requires a solution that guarantees the relationship between housing, private outdoor green, and collective green. The urban plan provides a number of sight lines along the canal, which must remain free. This creates small lots with a high density. The desire to save as much green and land-based living possible, has resulted in narrow but deep homes with a plot size of 4.3 x 17.5 m. Especially the cockpit in the middle, a sort of inverted skylight, stresses the relationship with the outside and provides extra light. The houses form a continuous horizontal raised plinth at ground level, which provides the distance between collective and private outdoor space. The partial deepening of the housing, the buildings are no higher than 4.5 meters, resembles a pavilion image.

EINDHOVEN AIRPORT KCAP ARCHITECTS & PLANNERS, DE BEVER ARCHITECTEN, NACO location function contributed by

Eindhoven (2005) airport Gemeente_Eindhoven

The development vision for Eindhoven Airport provides for its expansion and elaboration into a hub for mobility and business activity. The new terminal complex is an important marketing instrument. The section already ealized has an elongated ‘plaza’ with a floating roof, from which the various facilities can be reached. This building is easy to expand, so that an ensemble can evolve over the course of time. Its realization is to be phased, in line with economic developments, and the old terminal building will eventually be demolished.

NORBERT VAN ONNA ARCHITECTURAL AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER Norbert van Onna (1955) is an architectural- and fine art photographer. After graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1978 he completed internships in London and Paris. Since then he has worked for architects, construction companies and government institutions. “Light, to me, is the main motivation to take photographs. It creates moments in which a building acquires its identity and will start to appeal to the imagination. Capturing that dynamic is exhilarating. One moves within the ever-changing framework of light, time and space. This means looking ahead, being open to sudden changes. The ultimate goal is perfection.”
