Originally from Oaxaca, is a renowned Mexican singer whose repertoire includes traditional music in diverse languages as well as those of Mexican composers, fusing tradition with modern sounds in a musical style that reaffirms her mestiza roots. Gracing the stage in Puerto Peñasco at the International Cervantino Festival, Harp will be presenting songs from her most recent production, which is her eleventh album: Misterios gozosos, cantos de ida y vuelta (Joyous Mysteries, songs from coming and going). Within Harp’s repertoire we discover traditional melodies along with their rich history: Cielito Lindo, La Bamba, La Bruja, La Llorana, La Canasta, and more. For example, in interpreting Cielito Linda, Harp will share the three versions heard in Mexico and we will also enjoy fragments of other versions that have become famous across the globe. For example, in Poland, which is one of the countries that has adopted Cielito Lindo, most residents believe this piece comes from their traditional heritage as it has been sung there for nearly one hundred years.

The International Cervantino Festival (FIC), a celebration of culture and art, has been held in the central Mexican city of Guanajuato since 1972. The festival first began in the mid-twentieth century when dramatic interludes from the Spanish novelist, poet and playwright Miguel de Cervantes were performed in cities across the state of Guanajuato, brought to the stage by Enrique Ruelas Espinosa. In the 1970s these presentations grew to include additional artistic performance in strengthening the international dimension of the festival. Since then it has become one of the four largest festivals of its kind in the world! The FIC is member of the European Festivals Association and Asian Association of Theater Festivals. Now as one of the most important artistic festivals in the Americas, in its 43rd year the International Cervantino Festival is returning to the idea of shared knowledge in showcasing connections that bring these two universes together: The Science of Art and The Art of Science. This year, Puerto Peñasco is the sole location in the northwestern part of the country to be part of the Cervantino Festival! Together we will share in this grand festival of art, interacting with more than 600 artists principally from Arizona and Sonora, along with the awe-inspiring performance by soprano Susana Harp accompanied by her grand orchestra from Oaxaca. Framed between the Upper Gulf of California Reserve and the Pinacate Biosphere and Grand Desert of Altar Reserve, the XLIII International Cervantino Festival will take place in Puerto Peñasco from October 8th – 10th, 2015 across the Malecón Fundadores, situated on the Sea of Cortez, where all can delight in some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world.
