SARAH STONE

Growing up in Northern California, I was raised with a very laid-back & positive way of looking at the world. I have found a passion in travel, art & books throughout my experiences living & studying in France & New York City along with the people I have met. I enjoy taking photographs, drawing, & making small artist books on my own time. photo: Robert Clark

PROCESS

I enjoy collecting random things; from postage stamps, stickers, temporary tattoos, to found objects from various locations. This ties in greatly with my personal aesthetic, as many of these objects end up being a part or stong influence of my work. I also often sketch & list out my daily plans & thoughts. This helps me to think through ideas & work with my hands.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

My work process is very hands -on; I often create projects literally by hand through collage, drawing & other techniques. I also try to prototype everything I make so that I can clearly think through the process of creating the object or idea. I am always willing to learn new skills & appreciate the crafstmanship that goes into making something.

DESIGN THINKING

Through my studies, I have learned many techniques of business planning, innovative design thinking & managing projects or teams. I am always interested in learning new techniques & business strategies, as they apply not only in business but translate to many artistic & design projects as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY

My father gave me a 35mm camera when I turned ten years old & I have carried it around ever since. My love of travel has brought me to many interesting places around the world, & my camera has given me the chance to keep records of these places & events through photography. Although I have never studied photography, it is a personal passion of mine that I often use in my work & I think shows my personal aesthetic.

ART

My love of art has brought me to many interesting places around the world, & I have had the great opportunities to study drawing in both the Metetroplitan Museum of Art in New York & the Louvre in Paris. I have a great passion for art history & have studied extensively about Rennaissance art, & I had the chance to travel to Venice, Italy & visit many of the churches where paintings are still in situ. My interest in art history led me to study museum curatorial practices & I enjoy visiting art galleries & museums to view the current shows.

BOOKS

Throughout my life I have been very interested in hand-made & detailed objects. This has translated into my interest in book making & artist books, as I have found a passion in book binding as well as learning & using different techniques to create interesting projects. I enjoy artists books & through my work with Artbook D.A.P I was able to learn a lot about the art book industry while helping with the creation of their Fall 2014 catalog, making book dummies & sales kits, as well as working with proffesionals in the publishing and art industry.

LETTERPRESS EPHEMERA

These cards were made from collected materials with found objects attached to the back in protective plastic cases. The quote from Sherlock Holmes was created using the lithograph press. It started as a set of 22 cards which I distributed to friends & peers. The cards themselves were collected from temporary tattoo machines, the plastic casing for each found objects was handmade using polyethylene plastic sheets.

TAROT BOOK

The Tarot book was created using black & transparent pages with removable tarot cards. The cards were designed by Peter Paul Connolly, which I then transferred by xerox transfer onto a soft, thick paper. The type is lithograph pressed by hand, & the page details are hand cut. The book is hand bound, 3x5 inches.

LIGHT BOOK

Using different thicknesses & textures of paper, I paired my own photography of Père Lachaise & Greenwood cemeteries with an EE Cummings poem. My idea was playing with light through the images themselves corresponding to the paper weight and transparency. The books is hand bound, 7x5 inches with color photographs.

MEDITATION BOOK

I created these books while studying mindfulness & meditation and its effects on our thoughts & actions. I created two books using color meditation theory - red & blue. Using different textures & shades of each color, I created a color meditation within the books themselves. Each book reflects a certain emotional response. The book is hand bound, 4x6 inches.

TWO MYTHS

For this book, I chose to create a book inspired by my love of mythology. The focus is on two myths: Circe & Odyssesus by Homer, with Diana & Actaeon from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. I drew illustrations for each myth which I then rendered on Adobe Illustrator & using xerox transfer I moved the images onto a very thin paper. Overlaying these thin pages on the images created an interesting effect to illustrate the myths, & gave the book a fragile & precious feel. The book is hand bound, 6x9 inches.

ZINES

Over the past five years I have made many small zines - most of them dealing with cities, street culture & collected or found objects. All zines were hand made and then scanned & printed. I also made a collaborative zine with friends Hannah Rittiman & Dawson Timpany including their original artwork & my photography of Paris. All zines were distributed to friends for no fee & were done in small issues of ten to thirty copies.
