Rachel Karp, A Lot of Different Stuff

Page 1

My name is Rachel Sari Karp and I do a lot of different stuff. I’m a Designer, Stylist, Strategist, Producer, Actor, Leader, and Connector. I like to be the one who makes stuff happen, and I like to have a good time along the way. I was born in Los Angeles, but am currently living in New York City where I pursued a five year dual degree program at The New School graduating with a BA in Culture and Media from Eugene Lang college for liberal arts and a BFA in Integrated Fashion Design from Parsons school of design. I grew up acting professionally in Los Angeles (SAG/AFTRA) and I believe that much of my ability to think like a designer comes

from my background as an actress because I am interested in studying social habits, eager to deepen my understanding of consumers’ needs, curious about new media practices, and love interacting with people. I’m all about traveling, having new experiences, and sharing those experiences with others. I believe that the more different ideas and people are connected the more potential there is for innovative solutions in designing interaction and complete experiences across all fields of art and matter. 2

+ UNFASHION [Un]fashion is a class that explores how fashion is perceived as a language throughout culture and history.

Each week we were

asked to produce a wearable object, garment, or accessory, and create an outfit around that piece. I created several looks that are inspired by my interaction with the raw textures found in New York City.

All of the clothing materials used in this project came from my mothers’ closet, and mine or found at thrift stores and repurposed. By using my own body as a design tool and considering dress as a language I was able to express myself and understand how my personal character and style can be influenced by my surroundings.

+ space cadet SPACE CADET IS conceptual capsule collection I created inspired by the helmut snoodie (snood/hoodie) I hand kit over the course one month. The snoodie was inspired by an astronauts helmut. I wanted to knit something that is warm, protective, and functional on its own.

I wanted to create something that could be worn in a variety of ways. The colors were chosen from a galaxy palate. I then imagined what a young hip astronaut chick might wear the snoodie with.

Founded in 2011 by Brooke Taylor, Daniela Lloveras, Cong Huynh, Jono Pisano Ana Maria Bezanilla, and Kathryn Chadason; AMO began as a shared studio space where my friends would go to make work.
