Getting Connected

Welcome Class of 2019!

Letter from President Hodge Welcome to Miami University! One of the most exciting times on campus is when we welcome the newest members of the Miami family to your home for the next few years. The excitement, energy, and dreams that you bring invigorate and encourage us all. You are probably experiencing a wide range of emotions — exhilaration at the thought of being on your own and the independence that brings, and perhaps a little bit of apprehension at the same time. I want you to know that everyone who works at Miami — your professors, residence hall staff, student services staff, everyone — has one overarching goal: your success. You are here because you possess the unique qualities that Miami students are known for — intellect, character, curiosity, and the drive to achieve. At Miami you will be actively engaged in the learning process, both inside and outside the classroom. This year you have the special opportunity to engage in campus-wide activities around the theme of enhancing creativity and innovation. Your curiosity will lead you to explore things you never thought possible. We encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and seize opportunities whenever they appear. These experiences will enable you to continue to develop those qualities that will lead to extraordinary success when you leave. Miami students work hard academically, and they are fully engaged in cocurricular activities. From our athletic events to performing arts events and lectures, from any of 450 student-led organizations to endless intramural sports opportunities, I have no doubt that you’ll be busy. I hope that you enjoy learning about our history, especially our long held traditions, and that you have fun creating some of your own! I look forward to meeting you soon and often.

Sincerely,

David Hodge, President

Savor this moment. Take a minute to reflect on who you are, right now. You are about to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of your life, and once you reach the end you will be a very different person. We are thrilled that you have selected Miami University as the vehicle for your life-changing journey. For over two hundred years, Miami University has been helping students identify and reach their life goals. Throughout our history, we have been known as a place where students can expect (and are expected) to develop meaningful and transformational relationships with faculty, staff, the local community, and of course — each other. As a Miami student, you will very likely study abroad; take an active role in one or more student organizations; research emerging ideas in a newly discovered intellectual passion; or take classroom principles and apply them effectively in meaningful contexts outside of the classroom. Miami is a recognized leader in developing enlightened global citizens, and our graduates routinely become leaders in their professional and civic lives. Excellence is our tradition. The phrase “I Am Miami” serves as a daily reminder of our institutional values, and these values are deeply embedded in Miami’s Code of Love and Honor. Consistent with these values, the faculty and staff of Miami University will strive to make you feel welcome and to provide

you with a safe space for your time of exploration. At the same time, you are now a member of Miami University’s community of scholars, so be prepared to be challenged; you will be exposed to a diversity of new and different perspectives, and you will be expected to contribute to this thoughtful and civil exchange of important ideas. Throughout your time here, we will stand ready to support and advise you and provide you with an environment within which you can take informed risks. Ultimately, however, you will be

expected to identify your destination, choose your route and resources required, and assume leadership of your own journey. We believe very sincerely that when you arrive at your destination at the end of your time here at Miami, you will have grown into a new version of yourself that you can’t begin to imagine today, prepared to take on your next, even bigger, adventures. It is our privilege to partner with you during this very special time.

Love and Honor to Miami,

Michael Curme, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students

Miami Tribe myaamiacenter.org Miami University, two rivers, and several towns in southwestern Ohio all carry the name of the Miami Nation, one of the American Indian tribes that inhabited the region that became Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Unfortunately the Myaamia people were forcibly removed from these native homelands in 1846 and are now headquartered in Miami, Oklahoma, the town that grew up around them in the late 1800’s. There are several ways to learn about the connection between the Miami Tribe and Miami University that began in the early 1970’s. Visit the Armstrong Student Center and read about this unique relationship in one of the Shade Room’s photo panels. While in Armstrong, visit the 2nd floor Smucker Wiikiaami Room where four display cases highlight the Myaamia removal, typical student involvement, cultural details about the wiikiaami (Myaamia word for home) and the historic significance of ribbonwork. Classes often connect with the work of the Myaamia Center which is located on campus and directs efforts to preserve, promote, and research Miami Nation history,

Visual & Performing Arts @ Miami (513) 529-6010 arts.MiamiOH.edu The arts are a central part of campus life at Miami; the arts are for everyone. Certainly, you can take classes in art, music, theatre, architecture or interactive media studies, but why not also attend a play, a concert, or an art or architecture exhibition. You can also participate in choirs, music ensembles, theatre productions, or make art. You don’t have to be a major. Just audition for a music ensemble, choir, or play; or sign up to work backstage or join an arts club. Free faculty or student recitals occur almost daily in Souers Hall or other campus venues. All students may audition for theatre productions during the first week of classes, and the Theatre department includes students in all areas of production. There are ever-changing exhibitions in Hiestand Galleries in Hiestand Hall and the Cage Gallery in Alumni Hall. The Performing Arts Series brings internationally known artists to campus each year. The Miami University Art Museum has amazing exhibitions, and a student arts organization plans events and assists with outreach programs and school tours. Students can take a course or participate for leisure in ceramics, photography, woodshop, or metals at the Art Center in Phillips Hall.

grounded in qualities of character as well as of intellect. We respect the dignity of other persons, the rights and property of others, and the right of others to hold and express disparate beliefs. We defend the freedom of inquiry that is the heart of learning and combine that freedom with the exercise of judgment and the acceptance of personal responsibility.

Statement Asserting Respect for Human Diversity

Miami Mission Statement: The Engaged University Miami University, a student-centered public university founded in 1809, has built its success through an unwavering commitment to liberal arts undergraduate education and the active engagement of its students in both curricular and cocurricular life. It is deeply committed to student success, builds great student and alumni loyalty, and empowers its students, faculty, and staff to become engaged citizens who use their knowledge and skills with integrity and compassion to improve the future of our global society. Miami provides the opportunities of a major university while offering the personalized attention found in the best small colleges. It values teaching and intense engagement of faculty with students through its teacher-scholar model, by inviting students into the excitement of research and discovery. Miami’s faculty are nationally prominent scholars and artists who contribute to Miami, their own disciplines and to society by the creation of new knowledge and art. The University supports students in a highly

involving residential experience on the Oxford campus and provides access to students, including those who are time and place bound, on its regional campuses. Miami provides a strong foundation in the traditional liberal arts for all students, and it offers nationally recognized majors in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, and fine arts, as well as select graduate programs of excellence. As an inclusive community, Miami strives to cultivate an environment where diversity and difference are appreciated and respected. Miami instills in its students intellectual depth and curiosity, the importance of personal values as a measure of character, and a commitment to life-long learning. Miami emphasizes critical thinking and independent thought, an appreciation of diverse views, and a sense of responsibility to our global future.

Code of Love & Honor I Am Miami • I believe that a liberal education is grounded in qualities of character and intellect • I stand for honesty, integrity, and the importance of moral conduct • I respect the dignity, rights, and property of others and their right to hold and express disparate beliefs • I defend the freedom of inquiry that is the heart of learning • I exercise good judgment and believe in personal responsibility • I welcome a diversity of people, ideas, and experiences • I embrace the spirit, academic rigor, opportunities, and challenges of a Miami Experience, preparing me to make the world a better place • I demonstrate Love and Honor by supporting and caring for my fellow Miamians • And because I Am Miami • I act through my words and deeds in ways that reflect these values and beliefs • With a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude • I will Love, Honor, and make proud those who help me earn the joy and privilege of saying, “To think that in such a place, I led such a life.”

Miami University is a community dedicated to intellectual engagement. Our campuses consist of students, faculty, and staff from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. By living, working, studying, and teaching, we bring our unique viewpoints and life experiences together for the benefit of all. This inclusive learning environment, based upon an atmosphere of mutual respect and positive engagement, invites all campus citizens to explore how they think about knowledge, about themselves, and about how they see themselves in relation to others. Our intellectual and social development and daily educational interactions, whether co-curricular or classroom related, are greatly enriched by our acceptance of one another as members of the Miami University community. Through valuing our own diversity, and the diversity of others, we seek to learn from one another, foster a sense of shared experience, and commit to making the University the intellectual home for us all. We recognize that we must uphold and abide by University policies and procedures protecting individual rights and guiding democratic engagement. Any actions disregarding these policies and procedures, particularly those resulting in discrimination, harassment, or bigoted acts, will be challenged swiftly and collectively. All who work, live, study, and teach in the Miami community must be committed to these principles of mutual respect and positive engagement that are an integral part of Miami’s focus, goals, and mission.

The Alma Mater & Fight Song Both the Alma Mater and Fight Song are important for students to learn. These songs are played and sung at Miami athletic contests and other university events. Miami March Song (Fight Song): words by R.H. Burke

Chorus: Love and honor to Miami, Our college old and grand, Proudly we shall ever hail thee, Over all the land. Alma mater now we praise thee, Sing joyfully this lay, Love and honor to Miami, Forever and a day.

Don’t Step on the Seal The University Seal is embedded into the sidewalk in the center of campus (also called the Hub). Miami tradition is to avoid stepping on the seal, out of respect for Miami history and values. If you do step on the seal, you’ll be punished by failing your next exam!

Kissing Your Sweetheart Under Upham Arch Just a few steps from the Hub is the famed Upham Arch. If you kiss your sweetheart at midnight under the Arch’s lantern, you’ll be destined to marry.

Miami Traditions Tradition is an important part of life at Miami, and learning Miami’s traditions is an important way for new students to become a part of the Miami Community.

Rubbing the Turtles' Heads on the Sundial Just behind Warfield and MacMillan Halls you’ll find the Tri-Delt Sundial, a gift to the University from Delta Delta Delta sorority. It’s said that rubbing the heads of the turtles on the sundial is good luck.

Walking Around Trees on Campus If you’re walking with a group of friends on campus, and the group passes a tree, everyone must pass the tree on the same side. If the group splits to pass on different sides of the tree, tradition is that the friendship will falter.

Miami Mergers When two Miami graduates marry, they’re called a Miami Merger. The Alumni Office sends out thousands of valentines each year to Miami Merger couples.
