What is Riverstone International School? We have combined the best of the international school and community school educational models to create something totally unique: a school with internationally-recognized academics and opportunities to explore through service, leadership, and the outdoors, all built upon the fundamental belief that knowing and nurturing students lies at the core of any successful school.

The Five Pillars of Riverstone:

What is the MYP? The International BaccalaureateÂŽ (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) emphasizes intellectual challenge. It encourages students aged 11 to 16 to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life. It is a five-year program from grade 6 to grade 10.

The New DP Math Program starting 19/20 Applications and Interpretation SL (Standard Level): Most similar to This course is designed for students University admissions advice: the Math Studies SL Course who enjoy describing the real world and solving practical problems using Entering a STEM career? Take HL (Higher Level): Includes new mathematics, those who are either Mathematics course at the content such as statistics for those interested in harnessing the power HL students that have practical interest of technology alongside exploring in mathematics but would like mathematical models and enjoy the exposure to more challenging topics more practical side of mathematics. For highly selective universities: Choose the math that supports and content

your intended field at the HL

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL (Standard Level): Most similar to the current Mathematics SL course

HL (Higher Level): Most similar to the current Mathematics HL course

This course is designed for students who wish to pursue mathematics at university or subjects that have a large mathematical content; it is for students who enjoy developing mathematical arguments, problem solving and exploring real and abstract applications, with and without technology.

University admissions advice: Interested in ‘pure’ Mathematics? Take Analysis and Approaches at HL

Goals of RIS MYP Math Redesign Our vision is to continue providing a robust mathematics curriculum that is tailored to the needs of each student and meets the high standards of the International Baccalaureate. Our program review incorporates IB research and recommendations while considering our students’ current class performance, testing data and our own teachers’ recommendations. Goals: • Each math course provides an appropriate level of support and challenge for the students in that course • Students join courses with other students of similar skills and areas of need to better optimize pacing and target content • Support students in learning math while understanding that some math concepts are developed at different times in different students

DP Math Choices

DP Math Choices

Students are placed in courses by skillset rather than by grade level. The courses form a repeating spiral of concepts so students will usually skip courses.

Math Assessments Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) •

Grades 6-9; taken in the fall and spring.

Used to identify growth, areas of strength and areas in which kids need more work. Score is internationally normed and linked to PISA scores.

MYP Math Class Assessments •

Grades 6-10; taken in the spring.

Used to identify growth, areas of strength and areas in which kids need more work. Content is directly linked to the requirements of MYP math at Riverstone.

RIS Math Teacher course recommendations •

Grades 6-10;

Each RIS Math teacher’s professional judgement in consultation with the math team and the administration.
