12th Grade English Emma Pietsch

What's Up?

Last semester, the 11th grade We all know this is an anti-war English class read Kurt Vonnegut’s book, and so we would expect Slaughterhouse 5 The critical Vonnegut to use a bunch of themes analysis of the themes of war that are supporting the anti-war brought up in the book took the subject However, in this part, form of an extraordinary Vonnegut is almost complimenting assignment The following is a play war and its ability to organize by play reenactment of the chaos because Billy [Pilgrim] sees ferocious wit displayed during the Robert [Pilgrim] in this case as a Battle of Passages First, the flunked-out-boy who goes to war specifications: Each student was as a child and comes back as an put on a team defending a passage organized man That of course is from the book and went head to head the biggest break of familiarity against opponents trying equally By familiarity, we mean us hard to defend their own passage expecting it to be anti-war So in Each team was tasked with arguing this case, we can assume that how their passage does the best job breaking the familiar itself is of showing how the author utilizes helping push that anti-war defamiliarization (the process of narrative further He [Vonnegut] taking the familiar idea of war and doesn’t just come straight out and making it new through literature) say that this organization that In the end the winner was decided comes out of Robert after he comes based on a particularly back from the war is negative, or contentious vote that he is losing certain qualities or characteristics that Mr Scripps: All right guys, come on were unique to him before into the middle Which passage River: I think that he is also in a shows how the author is using sense using a complement of defamiliarization? 1, 2, 3, go religion by saying “tipping over Ethan: The biggest theme we have tombstones” and that is a bad with our passages is the fact that thing and war fixes them up It is it is breaking a lot of the other a theme throughout the book that themes in the book he [Vonnegut] uses religious objects

and then defames them But in this case, he is saying that war stops people from defaming religious objects and that's kind of changing how Vonnegut views religion I would also say that when he uses his son, who we don’t see much in the book, as an object for an argument, it changes his perspective Segue to the other group’s argument: Charlie Paul: The other group did an excellent job of defining why their passage fits in really well with the book’s motifs and themes, but the question is actually “how is it defamiliarizing the topic and the theme so that the reader can see it through a new lens ” So, that is where our passage will come in (Class reacts, astounded, to this audacity) Our passage defamiliarizes the concepts of war and religion by transmitting the message of Christ through such a satirical tone, through such a sarcastic tone, and one that is so uncommon in Western culture We’re so defamiliarized with this idea that “Christ is as dead as a doornail ” Oh well, there he goes So many people in Western culture worship this man so to drag him down to this level is almost to say let’s look at this again, let’s look at our subject again and take a different

that the other group’s passage does nothing more than advance the plot and finish the description Actually, it conforms to all the book’s motifs, all of its themes, whereas this one is so blatantly different Nathan: I want you guys to notice two things I want you to notice how Vonnegut’s language doesn’t only advance the themes of the book, it also represents a symbol of war itself So we obviously know that the content in this passage entirely defamiliarizes our ideas Notice how casual Vonnegut is about the death of Christ It conveys how casual we are about war and how normalized war has become in our society Vonnegut’s tone and language remain constant throughout most of the entire book and yet he addresses a variety of different topics He uses the same diction, which is informal and nuanced and his tone is ironic I want you guys to see that Vonnegut’s language emblemizes war itself It is ironic because those who create war are also shocked by its outcome Vonnegut’s tone, diction, and language don’t just reinforce the themes of the passage, they also reinforce the idea of war itself War is repetitive, chaotic, powerful, and destructive So is Vonnegut’s language War is made so normal that we see it as an aspect of society that is given

language is casual, normal, and yet chaotic at the same time River: You said exactly what the book’s motifs were, though Charlie Paul: Yeah, but it is the process of defamiliarization (Chaotic noise of people arguing) Scripps: (Trying to calm down both groups ) Alright, guys, we are going to leave it up to the voters (rest of the class), not to shout Only people in groups one and two are voting (the groups that had lost previous rounds) Let’s see a show of hands for this group (Charlie and Nathan’s group) Let’s see a show of hands for what this group said (Ethan and River’s Group) Oooh, tie! It comes down to me Ethan and River’s Group (Abrupt noise of excitement and shock) Here is why I voted for this group: because of what Ethan said at the beginning First of all, that passage was a very hard example of defamiliarization because it was a pretty straightforward kinda joke he was telling about the military What Ethan did was explain how most of the comments and discussion of the religion of the book were noticeably negative and then, all of the sudden, there is a complementary statement made about the military

I thought that you were going to go on to say “so that is unfamiliar and Vonnegut is complementing the military,” which I don’t think he was He has nothing complimentary to say about it That was a satirical statement that stood out more because it was unfamiliar and seemed complimentary but wasn’t In that context, you made the passage fit with defamiliarization
