ABOUT ME My name is Ricardo Hernandez, I am a designer studying Interior Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. I love rethinking, reworking and reinvisioning current methods and practices. My goal is to continually push the boundaries of design and firmly believe in the versatility and flexibitlity of the field; striving to break past the confinements and limitations of working solely within the walls of my major and dabble in graphics, architecture, illustration, branding, and urban planning.

L E S C O L S R E STAU R A N T Inspired by the cultural schism between Spain and Catalonia, the design of the Les Cols Restarant in Richmond seeks to infuse the contemporary brand with some southern warmth. Using the cenrtral wall in the space as the organizing element I have created an internal structure that seeks to suture the halves and alludes to a possible reconciliation between culture and structure.

The design of the kitchen in Olot was closely followed in order to successfully carry over the meaningful layout devised by the chef herself. The kitchen serves as the crossroads of the longitudinal and transverse planes that hover above the prep area, serving as a centerpiece that will hold plates for easy access. The kitchen lies adjacent a garden that faces the back of the building and features a calming pond with a living wall. In addition, the kitchen has access to the basement for further storage and a secure door gives the chef access to her residence .

The reception provides a glimpse into the restaurant allows for quick access to the bar. Featuring a small waiting area, the reception creates a cozy and comfortable atmosphere for guests. The hostess stand juts through logo wall extending from the bar counter creating a floating approachable first impression.

THE BAR
About The bar is conveniently located in its own corner providing its guest with an intimate area that encourages large group get-togethers. The liquor display features backlit hexagon shelves that create a striking first impression while highlighting the liquor products. A loungy area on the opposite side of the bar gives guests a comfortable and cozy place to relax and decompress.

CA RY TOW N PA R K L E T M AST E R P L A N This project forms parts of an undergraduate reserach grant recieved to build Richmond’s first parklet. A parklet is an extension of the sidewalk that takes over unused space and turns it into urban parks where people can sit, perform, park their bikes, and enjoy the city around them. I chose Carytown, a mile long strip of stores and restaurants as the site due to its lack of public space and its vibrant atmosphere. Existing Conditions

Concept Images
Inspired by household income, population density and age of the Union Hill neighborhood, these watercolor maps explore alternative methods and mediums of conveying and displaying information.
In this imaginary transformation of Union Hll, where angled streets of Union Hill collide with the superimposed city grid, intricate geometric shapes are formed. The process is shown from left to right.
Since topography plays a major role on the unique characteristics of Union Hill, I developed maps thats overlayed the contour lines of the terrain over the blocks. Two maps depicting occupied and vacant sites were develepod In order to better examine the interactions and the relationships formed. The third map analyzes the vacant lots as passageways and plazas taking on the same color as the streets. This allowed for the exploration of alternate routes and passages between blocks.
As vacant sites begin to be observed as alternate routes of transportation we began to question their relationship to the existing confitions.

ST U D I O 4 2 1 R E N OVATO N Studio 421 serves the students of the VCU Fashion Merchandising department. The program involved a classroom, a conference room, and storage for historical garments. Concept: The design focuses on the idea of creating a runway for the fashion merchandising students who, despite studying fashion, lack the amazing experince of having their work showcased on a runway. The runway is delivered in a large red cargo container that becomes the organizing element between the three spaces and opens up into the classroom, alluding to the merchandising aspect of their majors. The design also explores different ways of dividing a cubic space in three.

The design for the VCU Fashion department’s lobby located in the Pollack Building encourages inter-departmental engagement and collaboration through a flexible space that will showcase student work along with a mix of work/study areas. Envisioned from the geometric shapes of a cubic study model and developed using materials found on site, the new hallway maintains a balance between newly introduced spaces and materials while celebrating the identity of the existing structure.

It’s inward shape, inspired by the geometry of the cube study, allows visitors to see the work closer and various viewing angles. This rigorous process of examination requires as much consideration as choosing a location for a satellite office. Richmond, Virginia, the chosen location, was a big inspiration for this project and the design was brainstormed using the vernacular architecture of the state as the main driver. The goal was to use these common materials and incorporate them in a unique way, the same method by which the consumer creates a trend pattern. Therefore, the concept of the Richmond satellite office is born from the same primitive process consumers follow that leads to the creation of a trend, picking out the special from the ordinary. The play room features a yoga room, a treadmill, and modular seating from MOLO to create a space of relaxation for the employees. The ambiance in the room is enhanced by the bold prints from 1x photo applied as wall coverings.

the LOUNGE
The Lounge is the heart of the Trend Watching office. Designed to promote and increase collaboration, the large huddle space features a lounge feel that blends furniture from BENE and Haworth that can be used for informal meetings and as hang out spots. Whiteboards adjacent to a wide table, an enclave, a kitchen, and various seating arrangement. MOLO softlight clouds are used to soften the hard edges of the trellis.

Acoustic ceiling panels from Texaa are installed above the desks to control noise levels. In addition, a technology station is located at the end of the desks to encourage collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

In order to create an innovative community wellness center, the floor plan mimics that of a mall, creating large open spaces showcasing local artists, artisans, a community kitchen along with a gym, pharmacy, event space, and a child daycare. This project was month long endevour for the Interiors and Sources I Like Design Competition, achieving second place and a spread on Interiors and Sources magazine.

SYST E M M AT I C C U B E This project was a one week charette that sought to find a reconciliation between two objects. My objects were a rib and piece of hardware. I was inspired by the geometric qualities of the objects and incorporate the continuity of the circles on the piece of hardware and the idea of contraction and expansion of the ribs when breathing.

The head designers on the project were Matthew Marsili and Jenny Compton. Matthew decided the Hollywood Regency theme and I was in charge of the presentation, picking out the ff&e, and the space planning of the suite under his supervision.
