COVER PHOTOGRAPHER

Lauren Schulz

Less editing and retouching, more direction and personality, more diversity and more storytelling. I’ve learned to stand up for my worth and speak up when I’m not into something. ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR IMAGES YOU’VE CAPTURED THAT ARE ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL OR ANY FAVOURITE SHOOTS YOU’VE DONE?

Known for her memorable and evocative images, Lauren Schulz harmonises ambient lighting with enchanting composition and natural beauty to convey the right message for each client. Interplaying mood and movement through her artistic lens, Lauren brings to each shoot a level of enthusiasm and charm that results in technically exquisite, timeless images. She has a keen eye for selecting the right talent for each shoot, highlighting focal attributes with signature care and finesse. She finds the soul and personality of each setting, presenting visuals of honest, authentic and natural beauty. She adores travelling, pushing boundaries and comfort zones and meeting all of the different people this world has to offer. WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY? WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO PHOTOGRAPH?

I love capturing in between shots that are usually when the model is trying the least. I LOVE capturing people RAW!!

Follow Lauren on Instagram: @LAURENSCHULZVISUALS

I get told a lot that I’m good at capturing natural beauty and the “right moment”. I love capturing in between shots that are usually when the model is trying the least and I LOVE capturing people RAW, I hate seeing all these models get makeup caked on for shoots, it makes me cringe and they so rarely get to shoot in more of a raw form. It’s so nice watching their reaction when they see images of themselves looking like THEMSELVES. HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED TAKING PHOTOGRAPHY SERIOUSLY – WHAT HAS THAT PROGRESSION BEEN LIKE? I’m on my 3rd year full time, and I went from 0-100 real quick. When I was working full time in childcare I’d shoot on the weekend and edit on lunch breaks until it got to a point I was burnt out. If you’d asked me that without giving me access to my old work I’d say not too much, but WOW! The progression has PROGRESSED.

Some of the shots from this cover shoot with Isabelle are my favourite! We got so lucky with the light and the team was a dream to work with, I loved also capturing her in a way I haven’t seen many do yet. I don’t have a fave image though, I never will, I get way too excited about each shoot! WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE CAPTURING THE SHOTS YOU WANT TO CAPTURE? To be honest, the only challenge I ever feel is when a client wants to make something work that I know won’t work. But I’ve been lucky enough that most trust me when I say IT’S NOT GOING TO WORK. WHAT GEAR DO YOU USE? Canon MKIV with a few different lenses and mostly Photoshop! Also, my Pelican case to fly with! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER IN THE NEXT YEAR, 5 YEARS, LONG TERM? My goals are always changing. I’d love to be living in a different state and working with more international brands. Crossing my fingers that travel is a real thing soon and I can shoot some new faces! WHAT INSPIRED THIS ISSUE’S COVER SHOOT WITH ISABELLE MATHERS? I think after 9 months of lockdown my brain just took me to everything I couldn’t do. I wanted it to be a weekend away themed shoot. Super chilled vibes, by the water. Blue water and soft sand is something I craved when I couldn’t get it! And who would shoot a place like this better than the one and only Isabelle Mathers? Eyes you get lost in and the face of an angel. I couldn’t be happier with how this shoot worked out!! The whole team worked well together and I had so much fun!

Where beach or island are you dreaming of jetting off to in 2021?

Off the top of my head, St. Barts, Turks & Caicos, or Cyprus! But especially Turks & Caicos—I’ve been dreaming of diving near its’ coral reefs, or simply tanning on the white sand beaches!

Art Director

The Maldives: No shoes and no news! I can’t wait! What will you be packing? Plenty of swimwear and SPF, lots of versatile dresses that can be dressed up or down, a good book and of course my camera.

What will you be packing? Swim trunks that can go from the beach to the bar! Of course, I’ll also need sandals that I can easily slip on and off (I’ve had my eye on J.W. Anderson’s chain link-embellished pairs for a while), a slightly oversized sweatshirt to wear during brisk weather, and several pairs of sunglasses. Beauty-wise, I’ll pack a citrus-scented cologne and plenty of products with SPF.

READY SET GLOW! THE BEST SKINCARE ROUTINES FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE Written by Aaron Royce

Our skin is one of the most important things for us to take care of—especially in stressful times. Aside from the importance of personal upkeep, a proper skincare routine maintains health as well as appearances. As we gear up to hopefully re-enter the public and social scenes this year, there are numerous skin types and issues that we need to properly recover for to feel and look like our best selves. Fortunately, we’ve rounded up the most common challenges and the best products to combat them. Whether you’re struggling with oily, dry or wrinkle-prone skin, there’s a routine and unique ingredients that will solve your skin dilemmas in no time!

Oily skin An abundance of facial oil requires treatments that will dry your skin, minimize your pores and replace that oily sheen with a hydrated glow. Look for oil-absorbing masks with ingredients like clay or honey, as well as soothing serums and moisturizers.

LA MER, oil-absorbing tonic, $95

CLARINS, “Pore Control” serum, $57

CIRCUMFERENCE, green clay mask, $65

VERSO, “Super Eye” serum, $80

SUMMER FRIDAYS, gel cream moisturizer, $42

Breakouts

dry skin

We all struggle with acne, zits and blackhead breakouts—but they’re easier to fix than you might think! A foam cleanser and exfoliating pads will remove excessive dead cells and even out your skin’s texture. Anti-inflammatory masks with components like turmeric or matcha, plus a smooth moisturizer, will make your breakouts quickly break away.

Dry skin is one of the easiest skin problems to mend, and for good reason—it’s usually caused by weather or bathing habits, and all comes back to hydration! Drenching your skin with a soft liquid cleanser and daily mist will keep you feeling refreshed. Masks, toners and moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid and minimal fragrances will also quench your skin’s thirst ASAP, leaving you feeling replenished and ready to take on the day.

MESOESTETIC, purifying mousse, $70

CHANTECAILLE, cleansing milk, $55

KORA ORGANICS, turmeric mask, $70

NEOGEN, “Bio Peel” pads (lemon), $30

INDIE LEE, squalane facial oil, $34

CHARLOTTE TILBURY, “Charlotte’s Magic Cream” moisturizer, $100

EPARA, hydrating mist, $56

KYPRIS BEAUTY, soothing recovery mask, $210

JANE IREDALE, hyaluronic serum, $52

LANCER, “Nourish” moisturizer, $125

sun damage

wrinkles

Damage from the sun is important to target as quickly as possible. Reduce dark spots with gentle cleansers and toners, and incorporate as many Vitamin C products as possible to hydrate your skin and increase antioxidant production. A brightening mask, applied before a healthy amount of SPF moisturizer, will also soothe your skin and protect from UV rays.

Wrinkled or sagging skin catches up to us at one point or another, and can even happen prematurely! To prevent or tackle the issue headon, apply oils or serums with retinol or botanical extracts. Products with roses will further increase collagen production, and a multi-action crème will ensure your skin becomes tighter and smoother.

VOTARY, chia and parsley seed cleansing oil, $78

KATE SOMERVILLE, soothing cleanser, $38

UMA OILS, aloe rose toner, $75

GROWN ALCHEMIST, balancing toner, $34

MEDIK8, Crystal Retinal 3 serum, $87 COSMEDIX, bamboo brightening mask, $54

On the

BRIGHT SIDE DR. KATE JAMESON, DIRECTOR AT YOUTH LAB, AUSTRALIA'S LEADING MEDICAL AESTHETICS CLINIC, TELLS US THE COMMON SKINCARE MISTAKES AND HOW TO FIX THEM!

The beauty industry is obsessed with skincare and consumers are becoming more educated when it comes to what products to use and how to treat common skin concerns. However, not all of the information available to us is accurate (especially online) and can lead to us damaging our skin and causing more harm than good. Seeking a professional’s advice when it comes to your skin, whether that just be slowing down the signs of ageing or treating skin concerns such as acne, sensitivity, rosacea or pigmentation, will assist in guiding you to make more informed choices when it comes to how to treat your skin at home and what not to do. We are all guilty of skipping steps and taking shortcuts with our home skincare. Here are some common mistakes many of my clients make at home which, when corrected, can help to improve your skin and deliver a healthy glow.

1) Not using SPF every single day The best anti-ageing and preventative skincare product is a broad spectrum SPF. This is nonnegotiable for me and must be used daily, regardless of your skin type or time of the year. UVA and UVB rays cause DNA damage and will not only accelerate the skin’s ageing process (goodbye collagen and elastin) by mutating DNA, exposure will also increase the risk of skin cancers as well as causing cosmetic concerns such as pigmentation, sunspots and redness. Daily SPF needs to be implemented as part of your morning routine and preferably reapplied during the day (especially in summer or when you have extra sun exposure). Even incidental UV exposure such as through a car window is sufficient to cause enough damage without SPF use. A common misconception is that foundation with an SPF factor of 15+ for example is enough protection. It is not. This is a nice extra add on to apply AFTER your sunscreen has been applied. There are so many types of both chemical and physical sunscreens available now, formulated to suit ALL skin types, even for oily skin’s who may not have tolerated the thick and greasy formulations of the past. My favourite mineral sunscreen (which contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) is Mesoestetic Mesoprotech Mineral Matt Anti-ageing Fluid which is amazing for those suffering from hormonal pigmentation, and my absolute go-to for daily use due to its broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection and moisturising properties (meaning I can skip my morning moisturiser) is Ultraceuticals Ultimate UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50+.

2) Wearing makeup to bed and not cleansing correctly It is safe to say I have made this mistake on many occasions, after a long day it is easy to skip this step and just go to bed without removing your makeup. However, correctly cleansing and applying appropriate skincare at night is one of the easiest ways to improve skin health and combat the ageing process. Firstly, sleeping with makeup is a guaranteed way to cause skin congestion, breakouts and inflammation, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Any residual makeup left on in the morning will also be more difficult to remove, further clogging your pores and leading to blackheads and a buildup of dead skin cells and debris from the day before. Secondly, cleansing at night time has the benefit of cleaning the day away and preparing your skin for the application of your amazing active ingredients which will then work their magic overnight. It is a win-win. A double cleanse at night (that is using two separate cleansers) will work to firstly remove your make-up (I love using a cleansing oil for this step such as Cosmedix Purity Solution) with the second cleanse being more of a treatment cleanse, working to gently exfoliate and clean, and prepare the skin for your serums. A full double cleanse only takes 2 to 3 minutes so what are you waiting for?

Mesoestetic, Mesoprotech Mineral Matte Anti-aging Fluid, $89

3) Not using the correct products for your skin Choosing the correct products for your skin can be a minefield. Especially with all of the clever marketing online and on social media. I am a firm believer that we need to see through the “smokes and mirrors” of Instagram and question every product and the “miracle” results it may promise. Not every product is created equal and unfortunately not every product is suitable for every skin type. Seeing a professional such as your cosmetic doctor or dermatologist, dermal therapist or GP is often the first step to correctly assess your skin, establish your goals and concerns and make some basic recommendations. At least to set you up on a simple routine and offer guidance on key ingredients to look out for. For example, many people suffering from acne and inflammation are also suffering from severely dehydrated skin which results in a further overproduction of sebum and oils to combat it. Avoiding moisturisers and emollients to prevent breakouts is doing more harm than good. Another common mistake is that many people with sensitive skins with impaired barrier function think their skin is just dry but at the same time are using strong active (often prescribed) ingredients which are further stripping away the skin’s protective barrier. Some strong active ingredients like Vitamin A and AHA’s, when prescribed correctly can transform the skin, but can also cause more harm than good when not used properly. Don’t self prescribe and follow the advice of a trusted professional, slowly introduce new products and don’t just follow the latest skincare trend.

“Not every product is created equal and unfortunately not every COSMEDIX, Purity Solution Nourishing Deep Cleansing Oil, $60

product is suitable for every skin type.”

4) Not applying your products correctly

5) Over exfoliating

Who knew skincare could be so complicated? It doesn’t need to be and often simplifying your routine and applying products in the correct order is a simple change that does wonders. Firstly, look at the active ingredients you are using. If you are combining ingredients such as AHA’s, retinol, vitamin C all in a single product or at the same time then it may be a good idea to scale back a little bit, especially if your skin is sensitised and not improving. Overuse of active ingredients and combining incorrect ingredients will cause further barrier repair. Again, asking the advice of a professional in the correct application of your products is important. Applying products in the wrong order is also common. Your expensive and active vitamin A serum will not be able to work its wonders and be delivered deep into your skin if you apply it over your moisturizer at night time. I often advise my clients to start with the lightest products first, working up to your moisturizer. For example - cleanse, eye serum, treatment serum (such as vitamin C or vitamin A), hyaluronic acid serum and finishing with a moisturiser. If your skin is sensitive or you’ve been overusing products and need to “reset” your skin the best advice is “less is more”. Start with a gentle cleanser and apply a restorative Niacinamide or Hyaluronic acid serum to restore barrier function and hydrate the skin. My absolute favourite is PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum.

PCA Skin, Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum, $199

It is tempting to exfoliate your skin every day as it often feels smooth and soft afterwards and can temporarily assist those with dry and flaky skin. Exfoliating certainly has its place but in moderation. The frequency of exfoliation does depend on skin type and concern but I certainly recommend NOT exfoliating every day. Many physical exfoliants are rough and textured and work to scratch the skin, leaving tiny microscopic cuts and tears. Yes, they remove excess skin but in doing so they also disturb the skin’s healthy protective barrier. Over time and with ongoing use the skin will be stripped back instead of gently exfoliated. Micro cuts expose the skin to infection and make it vulnerable to irritation. The protective barrier function is also impaired meaning the natural oil balance is disturbed and the skin can become dry. There are plenty of alternatives to harsher exfoliants, but please do not buy a pharmacy brand product. A favourite of mine is the gentle Purity Detox Scrub from Cosmedix. This is a full-body scrub that contains gentle physical exfoliators such as poppy, jojoba and date seeds for a soft and natural exfoliation of dead skin cells and debris. It also contains the powerful chemical exfoliant Salicylic acid which dissolves the debris in pores giving an intense clarifying treatment. This product is very gentle and works to both cleanse and polish the skin leaving a smoother texture and allowing for your active serums to be absorbed following. Try it on your knees, elbows and heels and mix with water for a more aggressive scrub. But remember, just once or twice a week!

Mesoestetic, Collagen 360ß Essence, $139

COSMEDIX, Purity Detox Scrub, $74

“When you are applying your skincare or having a treatment done in a clinic, why stop at your jawline? Your neck and decolletage often get just as much sun and environmental exposure.” 6) Forgetting about your neck and decolletage This is a cardinal sin of skincare. Treating the neck, decolletage and hands is exceptionally important and once the damage is done it is very difficult to repair. We look after our face and invest in expensive products, but we should not neglect our neck and decolletage. When you are applying your skincare or having a treatment done in a clinic, why stop at your jawline? Your neck and decolletage often get just as much sun and environmental exposure, plus the skin in these areas is much thinner and will prematurely lose elasticity resulting in textural changes, sagginess and sun damage if left untreated. Extend the love to all of those sunexposed areas (don’t forget your hands too). I often advise clients to mix their products with a moisturiser to extend their use if they’re not wanting to use a lot of their expensive serums on these larger areas. Simplifying your regime for the neck and the decolletage is much better than nothing though, even just an SPF in the morning with retinol and moisturizer in the evening will do wonders and prevent the need for expensive laser or even surgical treatments eventually. Prevention is of course better than cure so keeping these areas protected from the sun is especially important, whether that be with covered clothing or even those fancy leather driving gloves.

It instantly dresses up any ensemble, is extremely personal and (literally) close to our hearts — and let’s not forget that sparkle! This season’s best pieces ranged from timeless to uber-trendy, appealing to a variety of aesthetics. Whether you’re more casual bohemian or classically feminine, all of the latest jewellery trends cover necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings you’re sure to love and wear forever.

Whether you’re craving the hustle of New York City or the relaxation of the Caribbean, you can channel your favourite holiday into your wardrobe today. If you’re homebound, ‘fake it until you make it’, and if you’re vacation bound, we just packed your suitcase!

Brisbane, Australia

Australia has over 10,000 beaches and 8,000 islands—so naturally, it’s one of the most escapist places on the planet! This continent is relaxed and diverse, famed for its multiculturalism and free-spirited attitude. The Hilton Brisbane is a must-see, whether you’re staying for a long trip or simply enjoying a swim in the rooftop pool. While you’re there, there’s plenty to experience: you could tour the mystical Lamington National Park, hop on the Koala and River Cruise for a memorable journey to the oldest and largest Koala Sanctuary in the world, and experience picturesque museums at the Cultural Precinct. There’s nothing as effortless as the Great Down Under—and that goes for style as well! Don some breezy dresses with your most comfy walking sandals for a relaxed boho vibe.

NYC is the ultimate home of casual-wear. Sneakers and jeans are practically a daily uniform! The Four Seasons is the obvious choice for your New York stay—especially in the city that never sleeps! The Big Apple is always packed with activities to do any day, at all hours. We recommend going to the Museum of Modern Art, then strolling for a shopping day in SoHo before going to the top of the Empire State Building for an enchanting, panoramic view.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mexico is one of the world’s most colourful and vibrant places, and Puerto Vallarta is no different. After enjoying a dip in the Hotel Mousai’s endless infinity pools, slip into a cute but casual look, like a light, printed top and slightly raised platforms, for a day in a tropical paradise. Puerto Vallarta is known for its merging of cosmopolitan attitude with a rich heritage. Many activities combine the two as well; we advise enjoying a morning basking at the Malecon Boardwalk and strolling through the lush Vallarta Botanical Gardens, before heading to a waterside lunch in the Marina Vallarta.

MISSONI, crochet-knit mini dress, $1,085

ROXANNE ASSOULIN, enamel and gold-tone bracelet set, $150

The accessory

Africa is one of the most majestic continents ever, which is instantly evident from its famed Oyster Box hotel in Umhlanga, South Africa. This luxe resort town is filled with things to do, like renting an electronic bicycle to ride down the coastline. Take in some culture from the handmade crafts and exotic foods at the Wonder Market Umhlanga, and be sure to check out a nature reserve like the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve to spot some wildlife. Of course, to beat the heat and show respect towards the culture, aim for pieces that are light, textured and colourful—like a mini dress and easy-toslip-off slides.

The shoes

Singapore

Singapore is constantly ahead of its time in terms of tech, food and fashion. Travel is no different, which we’ve seen firsthand at luxe stays like the Outpost Hotel in Singapore’s island of Sentosa. The sunny destination contains multitudes of luxe experiences, like traversing Palawan Beach and viewing the city’s full expanse atop the Tiger Sky Tower. We especially love visiting Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, which light up at night as if you’re in another world. Be sure to experiment with your sense of style with fun, street styleinfluenced pieces.

The outfit

ANDERSSON BELL, pleated twill and knit midi dress, $510

BOTTEGA VENETA, silver necklace, $3,800

The accessory

England is known for its simultaneous upholding of tradition and rebel spirit— which you’ll find in droves in London. The city’s Rosewood London is one of the capital’s finest hotels—an idyllic urban sanctuary where the hum of the city slips away, replaced by an atmosphere of quiet sophistication and unsurpassed luxury. During the day, touring the London Oratory is an excellent way to learn more about the UK’s past and architecture, and for all of you fashionistas, slip into Harrod’s! Dressing the part in an eclectic (but artistic) outfit helps—especially if you want to play with textures and mixed materials.

The shoes

STELLA MCCARTNEY, vegetarian leather platform boots, $725

Grenada, Caribbean

The Caribbean is the one true tropical destination that we’re always dreaming of, and for good reason! Flanked everywhere by towering palms and breathtaking island views, we’re constantly in a state of bliss when we visit this region—especially the island of Grenada. The island’s bold culture can be felt from the oasis of the Silversands Grenada hotel, though we prefer to experience it up close. Fort George contains an abundance of historical structures, perfect for an afternoon walk. And if you want to learn more about Grenadian culture, visit the River Antoine Rum Distillery or the Grand Anse Craft and Spice Market for an exciting afternoon filled with heritage and fun.

COMO The Treasury PERTH

Housed within the historic State Buildings, the heart of Perth since 1875, COMO The Treasury features 48 elegant guest rooms and suites spread over four floors, featuring original high ceilings and balconies. COMO’s fifth city property (others are located in London, Bangkok and Miami), COMO The Treasury represents a historic moment for an iconic quarter at the state capital’s beating heart. To retain the best of that heritage building, a meticulous restoration project overseen by Kerry Hill Architects artfully combined not just tradition, but also modernity. The architecture includes columns and bold, cantilevered balconies designed in flamboyant neoRenaissance style. The restoration project has returned 95 per cent of the buildings to their 19th-century origins, including the re-installation of dormer windows and Victorian roofs finished with copper trimmings.

Slate used on the roof has been replaced like for like, using more than 60,000 tiles imported from a quarry in North Wales. But where there was no heritage to follow, the architects have been confidently modern, with the introduction of materials including steel frames and glass. AMAN NEW YORK N E W Y O R K C I T Y, U S A

Aman unveils a new urban sanctuary and an architectural icon in the very heart of Manhattan. Opening its doors in spring 2021, the property will blend the pulse of the city with the soul of Aman, joining the much-lauded Aman Tokyo as the brand’s second urban destination, and will be Aman’s third US property after Amangiri and Amangani. Situated in the heart of Manhattan at the crossroads of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, overlooking Central Park, Aman New York will occupy the iconic Crown Building and will comprise not only guest rooms and suites, but will also house the first urban Aman Residences, a collection of just 20 incomparable private homes, inviting owners to be part of a very select community. Embodying the splendour of the Gilded Age and dynamism of Fifth Avenue, the Crown Building is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Manhattan. Built in 1921, it is one of the finest examples of neo-classical Beaux-Arts architecture in the Big Apple. An epoch-definer, a legend, a crown, 730 Fifth Avenue defies description in both stature and story. Beyond the park views, the location and the absolute rarity of the building as one of the few vestiges of old New York, this building represents a unique opportunity for Aman, its guests and permanent residents: an unmatched address infused with the Aman way of living, centred on understated, elegant and architecturally designed environments - a perfect complement to the unceasing heartbeat of Manhattan. As it embarks on a new chapter ahead of its centenary in 2021, the Crown Building – formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art – will undergo a monumental transformation, which will see it fully restored to its original splendour and imbued with the spirit of Aman.

Portuguese Coast PORTUGAL

Calabria I TA LY

QUINTA DAS MAIAS VINHO BIANCO + CALDEIRADA DE PEIXE

ENOTRIA CIRÒ BIANCO + LINGUINE AL PESCATORE CALABRESE

There is nothing like Portugal to get you in the mood for wine and seafood. Known for its vast number of indigenous grape varietals and salty creatures from the sea, there is no better place to discover new flavours. Take a trip here by tasting this white blend from the Dão region. You’ll love the rich, fruit-forward flavours of the Malvasia fina and Encruzado grapes merged with tart, dry Verdelho and Cerceal grapes. The citrus and cream wine notes match beautifully with this traditional Portuguese fish stew, Caldeirada de Peixe. Poof, you’re in Portugal.

Now head east to the little village of Calabria, located on the toe of Italy’s boot, to enjoy the rugged mountains and the stunning Ionian coast. Sip on this crisp white blend made with Chardonnay and Greco Bianco grapes. These flavours of lemon rind and salted almond will pair exceedingly well with luscious Calabrian Fisherman’s Linguine packed with shellfish off the boat. Delizioso.

Koh Samui THAILAND

New Zealand Coast NEW ZEALAND

CASTELLO DI MELETO BORGAIO VERMENTINO + GREEN PAPAYA SALAD

SCHUBERT ESTATE SAUVIGNON BLANC + PANFRIED SCALLOPS

If you’re going on a beach tour around the world, you must hit Koh Samui. Although not a huge wine producer, it still has to be on your list. So I’ve curated one of Wine4Food’s all-time favourite Vermentinos to take you there. It’s known for its delicious salinity, east drinkability, balance, and zip. The flavours of citrus, melon, and butter in this wine will be a nice accompaniment to the local favourite papaya salad with peanuts. Be sure to ask for the mild version since you’re having it with wine (if you like it hot, have it with a Singha beer).

Now head east to finish this tour on the pristine coast of New Zealand. Known for fresh air, sheep, and kiwifruit, this island is one of the best places on the planet to enjoy a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Try our favourite single estate Sauvignon Blanc from Schubert, if you want to savour luscious grapefruit and honeydew melon flavours with a touch of minerality. It’s a perfect complement to the local pan-fried scallops.

HOME Upgrades

DESIGN IDEAS INSPIRED BY LUXURY HOTELS

192 | RETREATMAG.COM

There’s a simple reason for the recent boom in home improvement: Everyone’s spending more time at home. Staying at home more makes it clearer what areas are lacking and reveals opportunities for upgrades. Fortunately, there are many ways to make a huge impact on the appearance of those rooms - instantly.

1

START WITH THE FOUNDATION

If your room feels uninspired, refreshing the flooring can instantly transform it. Recent design trends favour using consistent flooring throughout the home, or at least on each floor, for a more continuous feel - especially for homes with an open plan. While hardwood flooring is still the top choice, many other quality products mimic the look of hardwood flooring, like vinyl, tile and porcelain flooring, often for a much lower price point. Area rugs are also trending for use on any kind of floor. Rugs can add a pop of colour or provide a focal point, while also helping to protect the floor underneath. For a quick and easy fix involving zero installation, a high-quality area rug instantly upgrades your space.

2

COLOUR YOUR WORLD

What is the colour palette of the room? Is it an eclectic mix, reflecting years of adding elements that don’t go with the walls? How recently was it painted? Especially if you’re not prepared to invest in new furniture, simply painting a room can make an enormous impact. * Is the room on the small side, or doesn’t get much light? Paint a shade or two lighter to brighten the space. * Does the room seem cold or impersonal? Choose a warm colour, from yellow through red, to make the space feel more welcoming. * Prefer neutral colours like whites or greys? Consider one colourful accent wall to make a statement.

3

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Lighting is an often overlooked home improvement. While the light itself brightens the room, the lighting fixture can also add a striking visual accent or focal point. In terms of utility, the impact of improved lighting is most strongly felt in the kitchen and bath. “Decorative lighting has become a way to easily personalize a space,” said Erin Hoover, director of design, Kohler Lighting. “Years ago, matching suites were very popular, but as bathrooms and kitchens reflect more individual personality, more design elements are being added. Lighting can help you update these spaces without a lot of investment and effort.” Here are two collections from KOHLER Lighting to instantly upgrade your kitchen or bathroom: * Kitchen: The Hauksbee Collection reinterprets rustic lighting from industrial farms and factories of the 1920s and ‘30s. Smooth glass and cool metal combine with mixed metal finish options and vintage details, along with decorative elements like a domed metal shade with a cage detail and ribbed glass shade. The collection is available in a range of singular and mixed metal finish combinations. * Bathroom: The Arendela Collection is inspired by 1960s designer Vistosi, and the exquisite glassworks rendered through the art of briolette gemstone cutting and spun glass rondelles. Arendela reflects sophisticated style with jewel-like, multifaceted and spun glass shades and cast

metal works ranging from a strikingly singular sconce to show-stopping multi-light designs. The collection’s timeless sophistication complements modern and traditional interiors. Complementing modern and traditional interiors, Arendela is available in polished chrome, polished nickel, brushed nickel and brushed brass finishes. Thoughtfully choosing lighting fixtures to complement your current aesthetic can take your room from ho-hum to amazing. Visit Kohler.com to explore the possibilities for your home.

4

ADJUST YOUR WINDOW DRESSING

Updated window treatments can boost the appearance of a room, while also providing more privacy and insulation. Consider not just the colour and style as it affects the look of the room, but also the functionality. How much privacy and light is needed? Options for window treatments today are more numerous than ever. Blinds, shades, curtains or drapes all make distinct visual statements, while also potentially enhancing the room’s livability. Updating a space doesn’t require a complete redesign, a lot of time or a lot of investment. Design elements like lighting, window treatments and colour provide the perfect tools to transform any room into the home of your dreams.

MIKOH

www.shop.mikoh.com Mikoh is the collaboration of the sister duo Oleema and Kalani Miller. Born and bred in the small beach town of San Clemente in orange county, California, oleema and Kalani grew up with the ocean in their backyard. The Mikoh line is their statement on swimwear for the modern woman, inspired by a life spent in bikinis and oceans around the world. Mikoh is synonymous with femininity, beauty and strength. The line fuses statement prints and colours from around the world with luxurious fabrics and modern fits. Each bikini is designed to easily mix and match for one-of-a-kind styles. The collection has grown to include swimwear, ready-to-wear beach cover-ups, clothing for the traveller and the dreamer, and mikoh x surf, a line of surf-ready pieces in smartly cut neoprene. Mikoh is a vision of swimwear for the certain woman who knows who she is — if not where she’s going next. Oleema and Kalani were raised in a family of surfers, designers, and lovers of the sea. Both were encouraged to explore creativity and self-expression — oleema through her passion for all things fashion, Kalani with a paintbrush in hand. Creative expression was the spirit of the household and the water was a second home. As teens, the sisters surfed and modelled, travelled, lived swimsuit to swimsuit. Kalani’s path led to university while oleema took to the road. Mikoh brought them together in creativity, inspired by the things they’d seen and learned on their journey — newfound friends, foreign beaches, distant cultures and customs. The mikoh brand was born of this lifestyle: swimwear for the confident modern woman, unique and wearable at home and abroad. Its name derives from the girls’ last name, miller, as well as the first initial of Kalani and oleema and their younger sister’s name, Hana. In Japanese, Miko is a term that once meant “female shaman” or “female prophecy.”

Get to know our cover girl (and favourite jet-setter), Isabelle Mathers. Your favourite vacation destination? I love so many places but Bora Bora would have to take the cake.

pressure on allocating time to workout. I’ll always have a booty band handy if I ever want to get in a little workout.

Favourite island or beach hotel? Santorini, Greece.

What do you pack to exercise on vacation? A good pair of runners & a mixture of activewear sets.

On your travel bucket list? I’d love to go to Japan one day! Top spa? When I find time for self-care I generally treat myself to a facial. I’m yet to spoil myself with a spa day. You vacation style? The majority of my suitcase is usually bikinis and throw-overs when travelling somewhere tropical. How do you get ready for a beach holiday? I like to browse Instagram and my favourite websites for new outfits before a holiday. How do you stay in shape on holliday? When I’m on holidays I’m usually walking around a lot so I don’t put too much

Packing essentials? Sunscreen, a portable charger, headphones and a good pair of walking shoes Your packing advice? I have a habit of overpacking, but I’m okay with it because I prefer to have peace of mind knowing that I’m prepared for anything. I would say don’t stress about keeping packing to a minimal, better to be safe than sorry! Skincaare tips when traveling? Stay hydrated & sunscreen everyday especially if you’re on a tropical holiday. Do you have any beauty tips for flying? Bring a hydrating face mask and eye masks. Drink as much water as you can!!

What’s your airport style? A comfy tracksuit set & sneakers.

What swimwear trend is a must this season? I usually pull up my bikini bottoms around my waist to accentuate my curves. I love this look, I think it’s so flattering on all different shapes. What activewear trend is a must to pack? Scrunch bum leggings to help compliment that booty ;) How have you been staying inspired during Covid while travel has been on hold? I have loved seeing how everyone is getting creative in different ways since not being able to travel. I like how we were all kind of forced to switch things up & get out of our comfort zone. I love Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration pictures and ideas. For more, follow her on Instagram: @isabellemathersx
