A Legacy to be Honored Despite a Tarnished History. Herbert Gerson’s Contribution to our City will Remain Celebrated and Intact.

e recently had the opportunity to catch up with a dear friend, Rebecca Raymond, who’s family also has long time history here in Las Vegas. We asked Rebecca about her

Grandfather, Herbert Gerson, who was the Executive Housing Director of Las Vegas for purposes of urban renewal. Herbert Gerson, aka, Shorty, was born in Ohio in 1893. When he was young, he and his brother were sent to live in an orphanage. The boys decided to run away to escape the orphanage and ran west until they eventually landed in Lincoln County, Nevada. Herbert became head of the Housing Authority there. Pat McCarran learned of the work he was doing in Lincoln County and liked what he was doing with the housing projects and development. He invited and welcomed him to come to Las Vegas and head the Housing Authority in Clark County. That was in 1946 and when Herbert was appointed, Clark County didn’t have any housing authority commissioned yet to date. Herbert implemented and went on to build several low-income housing projects all over Las Vegas. Prior to his arrival in Clark County, Las Vegas had no housing developments being built for low-income communities. In the 1960’s, Herbert worked

directly with John F. Kennedy and successfully lobbied for things like air conditioning units inside the low-income housing projects, instead of swamp coolers or no air conditioning at all. Us locals know how brutal our temperatures can be in summer and how vital air conditioning is. Although swamp coolers may be sufficient in cooler climates or on the East Coast, it was and is imperative to have air conditioning units is all the houses in Las Vegas. Rebecca remembers her Great-Grandfather fondly. She stated “his nickname was Shorty; he was a little Jewish man, and I was 10 when he died. I seem to remember almost being just as tall as him at that time; he couldn’t have been more than 5 foot 4,” hence the nickname,

ertainly 1 of the most fascinating men in Las Vegas has to be actor, scholar, and longtime UNLV theatre professor, Phil Hubbard. His on-stage career includes 11 seasons at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival where he has appeared in over 25

productions including Claudius in Hamlet, Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Capulet in Romeo &

Juliet, John Dickinson in 1776, Hastings in Richard III, Glendower in Henry IV Part One, Corin in As You Like It, Gregory Wagner in Room Service, and many others.

In addition to his storied acting career, Phil heads the UNLV Department of Theatre Performance Area, is head of MFA Acting, and teaches acting, acting styles, and speech & accents for the stage. He also is a resident actor with the Nevada Conservatory Theatre (NCT) - UNLV’s on-campus professional theatre. He has appeared in the NCT productions of The Seagull (Dorn), Dracula (Seward), Annie (Warbucks), Company (Larry), A Man for All Seasons (Henry VIII), Hamlet (Claudius), Tartuffe (Orgon), Inherit the Wind (Reverend Brown), and others.

We chatted with Phil to learn more about his passion for acting, his equaled passion for teaching, and the highlights of his career.

1) How many years have you been with UNLV? This is my 23rd year.

2) What about performing brings you greatest joy? What about teaching brings you greatest joy? The interaction with the audience is the most thrilling aspect of performing. Whether

in a comedy or drama, the sense of their presence as the stories we create are being told, is what makes it joyful for me. Seeing students grasp and understand difficult concepts while merging their talent with new skills is what it’s all about for me. Being in the room when discoveries happen, as a result of hard work and preparation is priceless. It’s why I come to work.

3) What led you to acting? We had a great theatre organization at my high school-many folks who passed through the program there have gone on to significant careers. I discovered I wanted to be an actor there, but prior to that I was selected in my church to do scripture readings in the service and was told I had a knack for speaking in public-that’s an

important influence as well. All of the above, though, was strongly influenced by my mother, who’s still rooting for me at 95 years old!

4) Tell us more about your lengthy involvement with the Utah Shakespeare Festival. I am most fortunate to have spent 11 seasons at the Utah Shakespeare festival starting in 1994 where I met Jerry Crawford-long time UNLV professor-which led to my eventual hiring at UNLV. So, USF is, indeed, significant for me. (I met my wife of 26 years, Alexis, there as well!). In subsequent seasons, starting in 2001, I had the pleasure to appear in over 25 productions in a variety of genres-not just Shakespeare. It’s impossible to describe the profound influence USF has had on my career as an actor and my advancement in academic life-I would not be a full professor here without the opportunity to work there. To be able to perform at a major theatre company just a few hours from Las Vegas was a dream. Many students and colleagues made the journey to see my work. Providing an example of professional work for them has been invaluable.

5) What has been the highlight of your career to date? Certainly, my involvement at USF is a major chapter in my career......but every time a compelling work on the stage, or appears in major theatre companies or Film and TV after graduation, it is the highlight of my career. So yes, the students, and their success in whatever path they choose is what inspires me. I come to campus to learn with my students and it

From the early years as a family group to Donny and Marie’s recent residency run which was a staple on the Strip for more than a decade. Now Donny has returned as a solo headliner at Harrah’s and the show is such a success, additional dates have already been announced for the new year. However, Donny told me even though he’s doing his own show this time, his kid sister still has a special part in the production. “The first thing I wanted to do in the show is a tribute to Marie because we have such a bond together. And I went through every moment of those old Donny & Marie shows and picked out those perfect sweet spots.” There’s lots of sweet spots in the high energy show which chronicles the star’s 60-year career in one incredibly unique way! “Did you like the rap?” Donny asks me. Yes, you heard correctly, Donny raps! In a 10-minute “Hamilton-sequel” rap, Donny details the highs and lows of his six decades of in entertainment. “It’s probably one of my favorite parts of the show, very difficult because it gets so fast but it’s funny, there are parts where I talk about my failures and the successes.”

Donny truly covers it all from “Puppy Love” to “Soldier of Love” and even features music from his new album Start Again, his 65th release!

The “Dancing with the Stars” winner also showcases his mirror ball-winning moves throughout the show which at times even has the audience on its feet. “Donny’s back in town” the singer proclaims on stage and yes, Vegas just feels better having this beloved performer back doing what he does best.

They helped their staff and comedians apply for relief programs during the shutdown. Then just 4 days after the Governor allowed live entertainment to return, they made the necessary room modifications for safety, and re-opened making them first full-time comedy club to re-open in the country. Capacity restrictions made breaking even a lofty goal, but they opened anyway. When asked why, they said, “We just needed to get the blood pumping again, for our sanity, and hopefully provide some work for our comics and staff.” It is a good thing they did, now with 21 shows per week, we all have the opportunity to go to The STRAT and see live stand-up comedy once again. With the world we are living in these days, I think we all can all use a little more comedic relief! Here’s a Man who Fights for You to Possess and Speak Openly About Your Beliefs.

Las Vegas’ 1st Amendment Powerhouse Attorney, Marc Randazza By Candice Wiener

hen we got the opportunity to catch up with Mr. Marc Randazza of Randazza Legal Group, I let him know my initial thought and statement surrounding the entire COVID-19 situation. I told him, “Prior to everything happening with the lock-downs, etc. I immediately thought and stated, “this feels like a human behavioral science project.” Mark sort of laughed underneath his breath.

He said, “You want to know what my initial thought and statement was?” I said, “yes, what was that?” He continues, “You watch, no matter how many people die from this, our civil liberties are going to be the biggest casualty.” Seemingly both in agreement. Marc continued on sharing his insightful and educated input: “After 9/11, you found every authoritarian on the right having a wet dream of how many of our civil rights they could strip away from us. Both parties are equally guilty of this. Now the liberal party is using the exact playbook of the George Bush administration.” Surrounding authority, especially when someone who never had authority gets a taste of it, the thought of having that sense of control, by locking people down, all the while not following the same roles themselves, seems hypocritical and absurd to me. Marc states, “let’s take that douchebag who runs California, the Mayor of San Francisco with her excusing herself for not being accountable to what she’s requiring of those in San Francisco… She literally says: I’m feeling it; making an excuse for not following the same rules she’s mandating and requiring of others in her city. She’s partying and feeling it? How ridiculous, adds Marc. Nevada used to be a pretty libertarian place. Both the parties in Nevada were not like their national counterparts.”

What we are seeing here is the powers at be currently instituting draconian measures they claim “for our safety” in a continued effort make the world a better place. “We no longer are living in a free society, adds Marc.” Personally, I’m a firm believer in encouraging free thinking. The minute you stop questioning things that don’t make sense to your core beliefs and values, you’re simply following what people you believe are saying and requiring you to do with little to no thought behind why you are doing said thing in the 1st place. That what a society built on civil liberties is. When we asked Marc his opinion on vaccine passports, he said, “this is far more about identifying that the majority of people who are for vaccine passport mandates and people who feel that way tend to be more, right wing. He said, “think of young athletic teenage boys who are more likely to have a heart problem than to get COVID. Democrats don’t push that because they don’t get elected on people who give a f*** about teenage athletes.” When we asked him about employees who are being forced to receive these vaccines against their wishes/beliefs to remain gainfully employed as well as CCSD teachers being mandated to be allowed to continue teaching, etc., his response was simply, “Isn’t it a great way to get rid of the conservative teachers? Even casino employees, as long as you can exclude them, they will succeed at pushing them out of society.”

Marc referenced Jacobson vs. Massachusetts in 1905, stating that “Smallpox is way scarier than this. Your chance of dying from this is next to nothing. We asked Randazza’s opinion on a question 1 reader sent into us about the recent Texas new abortion law. Question: The fact that a supposedly Catholic president pledges to “protect and defend” abortion rights, etc. My body, my choice. But yet, the same doesn’t apply to the vaccine mandate(s)? Marc answered, “I’m not in favor of abortions. But this law is terrifying; it’s not what the people who are screaming about it think. They don’t even know what they are talking about. Take Marbury vs. Madison, for instance. This is the 1st case you study in constitutional law; the courts have the right to review a state statue, so that you can have the right to sue a state for an unconstitutional law, but yet the state doesn’t enforce the law. If this law stands, what if you stop Charlie Baker, the p**** governor of Massachusetts. If you feel afraid that your neighbor has a gun, you can sue everyone that helped them to get that gun. You don’t like someone’s free speech rights that the feminists pushed in Indianapolis? Sue anyone who sold or possessed pornography. That’s been society’s reactions to stripping away our constitutional rights, which seemingly dismantles our entire system of judicial review. With this law, the state can continue acting unconstitutionally, but prevents the state from being reviewed by a court.” We very much appreciate Marc taking the time to connect with us and his insight as a well-respected 1st amendment lawyer here in Las Vegas and across the US. Marc does agree with restraints that make sense, not conforming to the social norm and mandates or things that didn’t work the 1st time. Marc referenced many ridiculous requirements following 9/11. “I disagreed with the ridiculous things that were implemented that didn’t make any sense, like allowing TSA to grope you in the name of safety and being forced to throw away your bottle of water, only to pass through security to go a few steps and buy a new bottle of water.” What he did agree with was one thing in specific that did make sense, like the requirement to barricade cockpit doors. He says, “that was one of the only things that made sense from requirements after 9/11.” These devices have proven effective in creating a physical barricade to prevent

hostile individuals from reaching the flight deck any time the cockpit door is open during flight. Secondary barriers ensure the flight deck remains secure at all times. Marc continues, “I would never imagine asking someone; have you had an abortion before you come into my restaurant? Vax issue have become more about who we do and don’t like. There have been irrational sides of the vaccination. It’s like if you know you have cancer, but you still have the choice of refusing chemo treatments. It’s my belief that decision and choice should be between you and your Doctor.”

In some situations, you may need to pay special care to your alpha partner to keep them reassured, motivated, and focused on their goals. An alpha male without a job, for example, is susceptible to having bouts of depression or anxiety when he doesn’t have the proper support, especially in downtimes.

here comes a time in every man’s life when money alone just isn’t enough. He will want to know that he is leaving a lasting legacy, that he has made a contribution and that he will be remembered for the good things he’s done, not the mistakes he’s made.

Some will call this a midlife crisis, but for a wealthy man, it’s really an existential crisis. When a man is in search of meaning over money, he will do things that others won’t understand. Each thing will have deep meaning to him, but could appear frivolous and silly to others, especially if they don’t know he’s experiencing his existential crisis. I’ll explain what an existential crisis is, how it affects a wealthy man, and I’ll also introduce myself, so you know why I’m the authority on this subject. By the end of this article you will know how to navigate your existential crisis when it comes, as well as feel at the top of your game no matter where you are in the process. When a man is experiencing an existential crisis, he can no longer tolerate the pain and suffering the way he had in the past. You have an idea of what prosperity means to you, but society tells you that it’s one cookie cutter thing. For years you’ve gone along with society’s version of success, only to feel like an imposter. Before I go further, I’m going to address the man who believes that he has been charting his own path. You haven’t. You rebel, break the rules mentality is still just a program. It’s a belief system you learned in order to navigate life. A set of natural reactions your brain continues to have in an effort to feel safe. Even those risks you take make you feel safe, somehow. By the time you were 5 years old. You already knew how you wanted to relate to money, love, health, the world, and even yourself.

You knew if you were fat, skinny, poor, wealthy, smart, dumb, or any other adjective you can use to describe yourself. You also knew whether or not you wanted to be this way. You know if you accepted this about yourself or not. Deep down inside we are hurting because of society’s negative messages about us and who we are. That’s what programming is. Messages that you’ve been fed over and over again that eventually become your destiny. The good news is, you can change it with time and repetition, a life changing event, or with hypnotherapy. You can shift the old program to a new program and for a wealthy man, that’s what happens during an existential crisis. He loses the “money is everything” program in exchange for more meaning. So, what exactly is an existential crisis? It’s when you finally decide to break through the old program and shift to a way of life that’s more in line with your core values. It’s when your negative messages get an upgraded operating-system, and you call society out on its BS.

But wait, this programming shedding process can be painful. Not just painful for him, but painful for the people around him. His wife will feel like she doesn’t know him, and she doesn’t. She’s been married to his imposter all these years. She could fall in love with him all over again, but she’s also programmed, so her natural response is to dislike him for changing. During his change if his friends haven’t hit their crisis yet they will envy him for being bold enough to be authentic. If they have experienced their shift, they will accept him into the club.

He might buy a Ferrari, dress younger, do things he always wanted to do, and he won’t care about disapproval. I’m not talking about that rebel attitude where he breaks all the rules for effect. I’m talking about not caring what others think about the authentic version of who he is. He will finally feel free. You have overcome your existential crisis when you choose freedom over programming. True freedom is the most peaceful, most powerful feeling a man can have. When the time comes for your existential crisis, and it could be happening right now, you will need to know 5 things. If you have clarity on these 5 things you will move through this experience with more ease. The 5 things you will need to know are: know your mission/vision, know yourself, know your cause, know your laws, and know your pause. The 1st one is the most important so I will give you the tools you need to get clarity on your mission and vision. To know your mission/vision you’ll need to ask yourself, “what is my idea of prosperity?” Not society’s version, but your own. What does the word prosperity mean to you? Allow yourself to see it in your mind’s eye. View it just like you were a kid imagining yourself going to space or becoming a superhero. Let your mind wander and receive the vision. Get comfortable with it. Replay it over and over in your brain. When the negative messages come up in order to tame them,

just say, “thank you for sharing, I don’t believe that anymore”. Let those negative thoughts roll right out of your head and replace them with what you really want. Replace them with beautiful thoughts of the legacy you will leave, the impact you will have, and the peace of mind these things will give you. Let go of getting approval or getting attention, neither is serving you. Your idea of prosperity will include your wealth, health, adventure, love, and legacy ideas... it may not match up with society’s ideas, but I assure you, if it’s yours, it is right for you. Receive it. Accept it. There is no cookie cutter way to enjoy life. Each man has to go on his own search for meaning over money. On that search he will find that the journey to meaning is important, but the destination is even more important. ryptocurrency is a digital and decentralized type of currency. Cryptocurrencies may be used to purchase and sell items and many investors have also seen their potential to retain and increase value.

There’s this new digital coin being talked about at backyard barbeques, most likely, by the crazy uncle who always seems to be into something new. Today, it’s Bitcoin. Have you heard of it? Probably so! Bitcoin is a type of digital currency called cryptocurrency and today there are dozens of different cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is the most popular — and the most original — established in 2009. Ethereum, XRP, and Bitcoin Cash are other common cryptocurrencies. Each currency has a distinct purpose: some are intended for usage instead of cash, and others are meant for private, direct transactions.

Cryptocurrencies are completely digital, so there is no actual currency or fiat linked to your purchase. Instead, owners hold their currency in a digital wallet and purchase or sell it online. Your wallet may be online (some major exchanges like Coinbase offer an in-app wallet) or offline saved on a USBlike hardware device. Decentralization is a key bitcoin principle. While a central bank supports most currencies – for example, the US dollar is supported by the US government’s “full trust and loan” – its users maintain and value cryptocurrencies on a decentralized ledger where cryptocurrency transactions are recorded.

So, is Bitcoin Risky? In order to answer that question, we first must understand the elements of Bitcoin’s platform (such as Blockchain) on which the cryptocurrency is based.

The Blockchain is a decentralized platform, (meaning not owned by any one central organization like a bank or central government), a digital public directory used for and to keep store of data transactions regarding cryptocurrencies. Every data transaction is recorded by a Node (a networked computer) and those nodes are responsible for recording and completing transactions on the blockchain. The reason it’s called the ‘blockchain’ is because every transaction is recorded in a data block that is time stamped with the transactional data. These blocks of information are strung together linking one block to another; hence, the name ‘blockchain.’

These Cryptocurrency blockchainplatforms have the following characteristics:

Irreversible: A transaction cannot be reversed after confirmation. There is no safety net. Anonymous: Nothing is tied to real-world identities, and everything is digitalized and accessible via the Internet. Global Speed: The network confirms transactions in a few minutes. Verification and validation are done in-house. Because they occur in a worldwide network of computers, they are location independent. Secure: This method is unbreakable because of strong encryption and large integers.

No Gatekeeper: No one centralized government or financial institutions. Transactions are seamless and done peer-to-peer (no middleman). Now that you know how Bitcoin transactions take place, we can answer the question; “Is Bitcoin risky?” Short answer, yes, but I would argue…isn’t everything else?

Business Risk: Speculators wanting to benefit from shortterm or long-term holdings of digital currencies have flooded online trading platforms. A lack of trust in cryptocurrencies can lead to a collapse in trading activity and a sudden reduction in value as they are not supported by central banks, governments, or other institutions.

Cyber/Fraud Risk:

A centralized clearinghouse can reverse a monetary transaction in a coordinated fashion, but a cryptocurrency cannot. Because Bitcoin accounts are cryptographically protected, access to funds in a statement is likely lost or stolen and then removed from the owner.

Market Risks: Bitcoin trades exclusively on-demand. Thus, market dangers are unique. It is also more volatile than other tangible currencies due to limited acceptability and lack of alternatives, fueled by speculation and stockpiling. Cryptocurrencies are undeniably here to stay as technology develops. But the dangers remain the same, while some appear to be more significant and higher.
