They seem to have fun with their roles – it’s just hard to imagine any of them signing on for this film, especially Kidman. None of their characters were fleshed out very well, but it was good to see some familiar faces. “Paddington” isn’t very unique. There are far better talking bear movies to see, like “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” or even “Brother Bear.” These films are more worthy of children’s attention. As it stands, “Paddington” is cute, but as with anything, cuteness can only go so far. Andrew Jenson can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

People of all ages clustered together at BookPeople of Moscow for a sneak peek into the upcoming Hemingway Festival. The sneak peek event offered a fun environment for people who love writing, enjoy hearing local writer’s works or just love Hemingway. The event was full of laughter and applause, as 10 different University of Idaho writers read sections of their unpublished work to an audience. In between each writer’s readings, door prize gifts were given to lucky ticket holders and Hemingway trivia questions were asked to test the crowd’s knowledge, Jamaica Ritcher said. “This was the first year the Sneak

Peek has been done,” said Max Eberts, MC of the event and this year’s Hemingway Fellow. “I think it was a success, especially in sharing local works with the community.” Ritcher, event coordinator of BookPeople, deemed the event a success. She said about 75 chairs were set up in the bookstore for the event, but those were quickly filled and some people watched the readings standing in the back row. She said there was likely 90 to 100 people at the event. The Sneak Peek raised awareness for the rapidly approaching Hemingway Festival and provided an easy way to learn more about the event and about Hemingway. Every year, the UI creative writing program awards a fellowship to a third-year Creative Writing graduate student. This chosen student is named the Hemingway Fellow and in addition to the fellowship, is given the honor to read some of his or her work and intro-

duce a special guest at the festival. This year, Eberts will have the opportunity to read some of his work and introduce the special guest and Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award Winner, NoViolet Bulawayo, author of the book, “We Need New Names.” “Students at the University of Idaho and community members get the chance to go to the Kenworthy to hear national and internationally acclaimed writers,” Ritcher said. “That’s a big thing for a town of our size.” Having lived and died in Idaho, the Hemingway Festival is a great way to honor Ernest Hemingway’s relationship to the state while also bringing exceptional talent to small-town Moscow, Ritcher said. “We celebrate Hemingway and his life,” Eberts said. “It’s a wonderful festival and an opportunity to bring the Moscow community together with the UI writing program and English Department.” This year is the sixth year the

Hemingway Festival is coming to Moscow. The festival will take place March 3-6 at various locations in downtown Moscow. These events include readings, films, open-mics and one of the festival’s most anticipated events, A Moveable Feast. A Moveable Feast is a multi-course feast directly inspired by Hemingway’s work. The feast is catered by Gnosh and the menu features foods similar to what Hemingway had eaten, based off his books and stories, Ritcher said. “A Moveable Feast is a celebration, but also a fundraiser that helps to fund the department’s ability to sustain the Hemingway Fellow program,” she said. The Hemingway Festival events start March 3, with Ron MacFarland reading “Appropriating Hemingway: Using Him as a Fictional Character” at BookPeople. Flush the flu out This detox bath recipe will have you getting over the flu quicker

Let’s face it, everyone is getting sick, but no one has time to skip class and spend the day in bed. Between jobs, planning our future careers, a full class schedule and trying to be social, students’ calendars have no time for the flu. Students should do their best to stay healthy if they want to stay on top of their busy schedules. A healthy diet Danielle and sleep is esWiley sential to keeprawr ing a strong and active immune system. But college campuses act as a festering pond where viruses live. There are stuffy and cramped classrooms, residence halls and Greek houses where people are constantly touching each other and breathing each other’s air. That’s why I’m bringing you my miracle detox bath recipe, for those days you are sick but have no time to be stuck on the couch for a week.

Ingredients: •

2 cups of Epsom salt: This isn’t actually salt, but a naturally occurring mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. It relieves stress, cures muscle pains and helps build nerve strength. Another cool fact, adding magnesium to hot bath water helps start reverse osmosis,

Danlin Li | Rawr

which is when your body pushes toxins out of your pores. 1 cup of baking soda: This common ingredient, when added to hot water, will calm and relieve irritation. It’s also known as sodium bicarbonate and will leave your skin soft and its anti-fungal properties will help make you feel clean. 1/3 cup of ground ginger: Raw ground ginger will make you sweat.

It raises body heat levels when absorbed through the skin and helps flush out toxins, especially toxins that cause the cold and flu. It also helps with muscle relief. 1-2 tablespoons of lavender or a couple drops of lavender oil: Lavender smells good and helps relax the mind and body.

Once you gather all the ingredients, which you can buy

for under $10 at the Moscow Co-op, draw a large hot bath. Side note — don’t let your hair get into the water because the Epsom salt will strip hair of its essential oils and it will feel like dry hay. Add all the ingredients one at a time, and then swirl the water together. Once it’s all mixed together, step into the bath and soak for about 40 minutes. The first 20 minutes will draw out toxins and other bad elements from the body. The last 20 minutes, your body will soak in all the good

minerals from the bath. The bath will most likely make you sweat, which is a good thing. After 40 minutes, slowly step out of the tub, it’s likely your muscles will feel weak and you’ll feel zapped of your energy. It’s a good idea to take this bath right before you head to bed for the night, so your body can rest while it continues to detox. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll feel better in the morning. Take a paper towel and loosely wrap the bacon in it and flip both potatoes over. Take the paper towel swaddled bacon and drape it gently across both potatoes. Finally, put the whole thing back in the microwave for another five minutes. As it gently spins in the microwave, the bacon will leak grease. Most of it will stay contained by the paper towels, but some will soak through, down into the potatoes, filling them with fatty fla-

I like to throw sour cream and butter on the potatoes, cut up the bacon and mix it together into a bacon and potato mash. Top it off with some salt and pepper and it should be good to go. Wagon wheels Transformation from rundown barn to art studio Claire Whitley rawr

Highway 195 takes travelers past a little white barn with an impressive fence. The fence is made of more than 1,000 old wheels stretched around the property. This barn is known as Artisans at the Dahmen Barn and is located near Uniontown, Washington. Leslee Miller, barn manager, said Dahmen Barn is a place for people’s creativity to flow unabated and to provide local artists with a place to work, showcase their art and sell their pieces directly to the public. Artists have studios in the barn, there is a little shop featuring several area artists, and they host several classes throughout the year, as well as concerts. Miller said the barn, what was once an old dairy barn, was run down before the Artisans gained use of the property after it sat vacant for nearly 50 years. The people who had owned the property, Steve and Junette Dahmen, built the wheel fence, and Miller said they both had interest in the fine arts. Steve began building the metal wheel fence around the property, which started as just a gate. When their neighbors saw it, they began bringing him all kinds of wheels, Miller said. He died after the grand opening of the Artisans at the Dahmen barn in 2006. Junette is a notable water color artist at the barn. The Dahmens had no children to leave the property to, so they decided to give it to the community of Uniontown, specifically the town’s development association. The nonprofit group was renovating old buildings, and the Dahmens wanted to give their barn to the project. The renovation of it has been a community project. Miller said the renovation was entirely done by volunteers who continue to volunteer at barn events to this day. Miller came up with the idea

for providing open studios for artists after visiting the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Miller said the Torpedo Factory does the same things the barn now does, like offering classes and having artists’ studios open to public viewing. “We came back with the idea, and everyone thought it was neat,” Miller said. “But decided to put the word out within the region to find out what artists thought. The response was overwhelming. ‘Yes, we need a place to work on our art and showcase what we do.’” After the strong response, the development association started their grant writing and got to work. Miller said there are currently 20 artists working out of the barn’s 10 studios, but they are working on an additional space for more studios. The addition to the barn will add a commercial kitchen for culinary arts programs at the barn, as well as a bigger venue for special events or performances throughout the year. Some of the upcoming events include a glass blowing workshop Jan. 24, at Sky River Glass in Clarkston. The class is currently full, but another glass blowing class will be offered Jan. 31 as well. Registration is $125, and people must be registered by Jan. 24. Another series of events happening at the barn right now is the Wild Women Winter series. Previously, they have done glass etching, pop-up cards and jewelry. Sunday, Jan. 25 there will be a painting on silk class at Dahmen Barn. Miller said the classes are open to everyone, and some men and children have shown up to the Women Winter series. Miller said she wants people who are interested to come and experience the creativity of the people whoshe and others work with. “It’s a pretty unique place,” Miller said. “I don’t think there is anywhere in the region that does it like we do, and maybe not many in the United States. So it’s pretty special.” Claire Whitley Amelia C. Friday Fiction

No greater love Andrew Jenson rawr

He wished he’d died with his wife. Jonathan curled up in bed and did what he had done almost every night for the past five years — he reminisced about his wife’s death. He sorely missed Jean, and he hated himself for his choices. Jonathan remembered what happened vividly. He knew the spot where she died too well, as they both had driven the route a million times. It was an incline that was part of an old road he and Jean traveled often as a shortcut to the main highway. It was the quickest way to the city and to work. The incline was the most dangerous part of the road — narrow, windy and steep, with a cliff face on one side and an open precipice on the other. One wrong move could send a vehicle over the precipice and into the river below. It always made Jonathan a bit nervous. “Why did she take that road?” Jonathan thought as he lay in bed, tears swelling in his eyes. “She should have taken the other route. I should have told her to stay. Stupid!”

They had been arguing when she decided she needed to go for a drive and cool off. An abundance of fresh snow covered the ground — wet and disgusting slush. Jonathan’s stomach turned inside out when the police told him about the crash the next day. He didn’t believe it at first and thought perhaps she’d come home safe and sound only a few hours later. She never showed. Weeks turned into months. Months turned into years. Jonathan couldn’t stop thinking about the accident. Guilt weighed down on his shoulders. He wanted to forget, but he couldn’t. All the doctors, all the reverends and all the friends in all the world couldn’t help him forget. It was impossible. He curled up with his pillow and held it tightly. Tears continued to form in his eyes and drip onto the bed. His sobs became uncontrollable. As often as he thought about the incident and Jean, the pain hadn’t lessened over time. It simply remained, like a sickness his

body couldn’t fight. He would dream of her. She would be sinking into an abyss and he’d try to reach her, but his efforts were always in vain. She would disappear into blackness and he would be left alone, cold and afraid. He wanted to hold her, to embrace her with all his strength and never let go. He wished he’d died with her. The next morning, he put on a suit, had his breakfast and headed to work. Outside, everything had been frosted over as winter prepared to rear its ugly head again. Jonathan avoided the old road and instead took the long route, as he had for five years. He kept his mind off Jean and focused his attention on the radio. He tuned it to the classical station and cranked up the volume. The sweet sound of piano and accompanying strings relieved him of reality for a little while. Just before reaching the highway, Jonathan saw a little sedan on the side of the road. His heart skipped a beat. The car was in a ditch and it was upside down. He couldn’t see anybody outside the vehicle. Perhaps they’d gotten out and went to a hospital already? Images of Jean immediately came to his mind. He turned down the radio and pulled over on the other side of the street. He got out of his car and hurried to the wreckage. Little streams of smoke escaped from the sedan’s engine bay. Rubble from the car lay scattered in the ditch, with some pieces lying across the road. The car was well-entrenched in the ditch — the back window seemed to be the best way out, but it was still intact. It was a wonder anyone could have gotten out. Perhaps they hadn’t … Jonathan rushed to the back window. Someone was trapped inside — he could just make out the person’s outline, and it seemed to belong to a woman. He rapped on the window and yelled at them, but they gave no response. His heartbeat increased. He dialed 911 and got to work getting them out. He found a rock and set to work smashing the back window.

The window wasn’t giving way easily and he hit it harder and more frantically until it shattered. His thoughts went to Jean and how she died. Could she have been trapped like this, with no one to help her until it was too late? He crawled through the vehicle to the person — definitely a woman. Jonathan thanked God she was still breathing and conscious. The woman had a large cut on her head and some bruises on her arms, but otherwise she appeared to be fine.

Jonathan got her out without too much difficulty. He took her to his car and gave her his coat. She said she was fine, just shook up. Jonathan learned the woman’s name was Tiffany. He thought she couldn’t have been any older than 25. They sat together in his car until the ambulance arrived and took her away. She was going to be all right. And so was he. Jonathan heaved a sigh of relief. For the first time in a long while, he was glad to still be alive.
