On the Hogwarts Express Sorcerer’s Stone You’ll never forget your first time … watching a Harry Potter movie. The first installment is when fans fall in love with their favorite characters, and J.K. Rowling created some of the best.

Chamber of Secrets

The third film of the Harry Potter franchise was my personal favorite for a long time. Fans are introduced to some of the best characters in the series, including Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, and let’s not forget Buckbeak the Hippogriff.

Not-Be-Named.

Order of the Phoenix This fifth installment is by far the best of the Harry Potter series. First of all, both the book and the film are the longest of the bunch, so any true fans should be happy about the extra content. And anyone who complains that Harry is too whiney is just whining themselves. He is a 15-year-old boy who is being possessed by a very mean person. Let’s be honest.

Half-Blood Prince The sixth film made Draco Malfoy my all-time favorite

character of the series. He has a fantastic character arc. There may be a lot of drama stuffed into more than two hours of movie (cough, cough, Lavender Brown) but there is also a lot of important information that culminates with one of the saddest moments of the series before the final installment.

Deathly Hallows (Parts 1 and 2)

J.K. Rowling is somehow able to tie all of the loose ends up neatly and leave her fans with an epic conclusion. The Battle of Hogwarts has most fans in tears with almost every viewing, but it is still incredibly satisfying. I suggest watching this one with popcorn on one side and a tissue box on another. Skerik Bandalabra, a well-known band out of Seattle, plays a jazz show at John’s Alley on Friday, Sept. 18.

An evening in the alley Alley cats congregate to hear live music in Downtown Moscow

Molly Spencer Rawr While the walls covered in colorful street art are one of the most notable characteristics of John’s Alley, the local bar has more than just one form of art to offer. The bar doubles as a venue for regional artists, and showcases multiple bands a week and has earned the name “Moscow’s home of live music.” T.J. Armstrong, the bar back at John’s Alley, more commonly known by locals as “The Alley,” said that when it comes to performers, no two nights are the same — Sept. 17, for example, featured the swinging vocals and fiddling of local band The Working Poor. “We had a good ol’ down home country band,” Armstrong said. Then on some nights the Alley will host a jazz band like Skerik’s Bandalabra. “It’s never a bad time,” Armstrong said. “You have to try really hard to have a bad time.” Armstrong said his position at the Alley is a jack-of-all-trades. As a bar back, Armstrong said his job is to watch the door, bus the bar and

make sure the bartenders have everything they need. “I basically take care of the bartenders,” he said. Cody Wood, who is also a bar back, started working at the Alley in May. Wood said his favorite part about his job is his group of co-workers. “Everyone’s just crazy awesome — there’s only like 12 of us here,” Wood said. “We’re a really close-knit group. We all like to have a really good time.” In addition to the lively staff, Wood said the customers make the job an engaging experience. “The people are my No. 1. No. 2 are the customers that come in,” Wood said. “We get a lot of people from the service industry here and I’ve met so many great people since I started working here.” For his first bartending job, Wood said he was nervous starting out at the Alley, but that it didn’t take long for him to feel comfortable as a bar back. Wood said his favorite memory at the Alley was seeing the country band, Micky and the Motorcars. “I saw them when I wasn’t working here last April — the guys on stage are awesome,” Wood said. Rolling in the dough Local roller derby team holds fundraiser for Gritman’s breast cancer prevention program Whitney Hillard Rawr Roller derby has everything anyone could ever want in a sport — racing, roller blades and rabble-rousing — and come October, a local roller derby team will provide an evening full of all of these and more in the name of a good cause. The Roller Hills Derby Dames, a full-contact, women’s roller derby league based in the Palouse, will host a double header on Oct. 3 at Beasley Colliseum in Pullman to roll in the dough for Gritman Medical Center’s Bosom Buddies program. The league said they are passionate about giving back to the community. They have donated more than $10,000 to local charities within the last six years. The league said this year, they have decided to donate proceeds from the event’s beer garden to the Bosom Buddies program, which provides free mammograms to local women who are unable to afford the screening without financial assistance. Catreas Mohr, a 48-year-old woman known by her derby name, Letha Lee Blonde, is the oldest Rolling Hills Derby Dame. Mohr said she grew up around roller derby, but didn’t pick it up herself until roughly five years ago. Mohr said this year she wanted to have a breast cancer-themed event. The topic hits close to home for Mohr, whose mother was diagnosed and treated for stage two breast cancer. Although her mother is now doing great, Mohr said the experience made her realize just how common and serious a disease breast cancer truly is. Mohr said at the event she hopes to emphasize the significance of catching cancer early as well as how important it is for woman to get regular mammograms.
