Capricorn 12/22-1/19

Put all that ambition to work and those finals will go well for you. Or not because you know, finals are hard.

Aquarius 1/20-2/18

You see opportunities everywhere, which is great because finals are all about “opportunities.” Where some see horrendous tests, you see possibilities.

Pisces 2/19-3/20

Rawr is an alternative weekly publication covering art, culture, campus life and entertainment.

You’ve been in your studying bubble for last week, and now you’ll have to deal with people again *sigh* but just another week and you get a real break.

We are accepting all forms of art and creativity to be featured inside the publication or on the cover.

Group members will be appreciating your diligent study skills this week. Group projects stink, but at least the semester is almost over.

Taurus 4/20-5/20

Though you may have put off your studying a bit, you pulled it together at the last minute. Now you are (mostly) prepared and ready to tough your way through another round of finals.

Gemini 5/21-6/21 Unfortunately, you have had to spend the last week staying in and studying (ugh) but you just have to make it through some measly little finals, and you can rejoin the social world.

Cancer 6/22-7/22 You spent the last week studying but now you just have one week more until you are done with the semester and off on new adventures.

Leo 7/23-8/22

Despite being sure you didn’t need to, you may have studied a little and are now ready for the week ahead. Maybe

Libra 9/23-10/22

As the diplomat of your group, you made sure everyone stayed friends through all that stress leading up to finals week. Now you can relax, and get down to your own work at last.

Scorpio 10/23-11/21 After spending the last week all wrapped up in studying, you are now ready to spend the next week all wrapped up in finals. Yay.

Finding peace through fitness Fitness programs on campus, like yoga classes, help students de-stress Corrin Bond Rawr As finals week approaches, many students try to do whatever they can to squeeze in some stress relief before exams. For some, that means taking an extra long nap or a Netflix break while others might need the physical intensity of a brisk walk or a trip to the gym. While some students prefer to destress over a work out, University of Idaho Fitness and Wellness Director, Peg Hamlett, said it’s important for students to try different kinds of exercises so they can find the one that works best for them. Hamlett said UI’s Wellness Program offers a number of different classes as well as personal training opportunities. “The Wellness Program is a chance for students to take classes for credit or non-credit,” Hamlett said. “The nice thing is all of our instructors here are nationally certified and trained ... this way, they’re knowledgeable about how the body works.” When it comes to decreasing stress through physical fitness, Hamlett said certain personality types need different kinds of exercises to maximize stress relief. “It is amazing that certain personality types need different exercises,” Hamlett said. Hamlett said people with Type A personalities or those in high stress fields of study, such as the law program, might find that intense courses, such as cycling work better for them than form intensive courses, such as yoga. “ “It is so intense, their minds are working so fast, they need to power through and have a get-a-good-sweaton type activity,” Hamlett said. The best holiday specials in TV sitcoms

While the holidays are great, the ways holidays are portrayed in sitcoms is even better. TV shows, especially sitcoms, have this magical ability to take the stress of the holiday season — from obligatory, awkward family get-togethers to gift-buying gaffs — and make it funny. In addition to a good laugh, sitcom holiday specials often remind us of what’s truly important during this time of appreciation and celebration — caring for each other.

“How I Met Your Mother” — “How Lily Stole Christmas”

The first holiday episode of “How I Met Your Mother” plays off all the different family disputes people have over Christmas. When Lily and Marshall get back together and have their first Christmas as a reunited couple, Lily finds out that Ted called her a “Grinch.” She becomes upset and steals all the holiday decorations. Ted goes home to his family for Christmas. This causes Lily to realize what’s important in the holiday season is not decorations or gift giving, but the friendship they all share.

“That ’70s Show” — “The Best Christmas Ever” Instead of the gang going to the parents’ annual holiday party they decide to have their own party in the basement. Throughout the episode, Hyde and Kelso stress about what to get Donna and Jackie. Also, the guys decide to steal a Christmas tree that’s on federal property so they can use the money Red gave them to buy a tree to buy beer instead. It’s all fun and games until a state trooper shows up to Eric’s house, and Eric and Hyde realize they both like Donna. The episode is a pretty accurate representation of what it feels like to be a teenager at their parents’ Christmas.

“New Girl” — “Santa” When everyone in the group receives separate Christmas party invitations, instead of spending the holiday apart, they pool the invites and attempt to attend every party together. The result is everyone facing relationships past, present and future. The episode ends with everyone being able to find a happy place in their relationships,

The slippery slope of winter A guide to how to stay vertical during the treacherous, icy months of winter Moscow’s winter-time weather is a mixed bag of snow, sleet, rain and slush. As the season progresses, the snow continuously melts and freezes over — turning walking paths, parking lots and the ground in general into dangerous, icy wonderland that can bring even the most balanced students to their knees. Many people hug the ground during the cold months, which is far from a pleasant experience. The effects of falling during this time can range from scary Nina Rydalch and unscathed to lying annihilated on the ground. However, not all hope should be lost. There are certain tricks that can help you stay vertical until the warm safety of spring arrives. First, stay inside, and never go out. Of course, this doesn’t eliminate the possibility of falling, but nor does the probability increase from a normal day spent indoors. Honestly, outside is a dangerous place right now, and avoiding it is a legitimate way of dealing with problems. Unfortunately this option is not one many people find feasible, as it relies on them not needing to leave their homes to get food, be social, go to school or work or fulfill other obligations. Furthermore, if you are one of the rare people with the ability to hibernate indoors all winter, you would be missing many of the seasonal perks by doing so. Life, it has been said, is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about learning how to dance in the rain, or, in this case, the snow. There are a few tips that can make dancing or walking safer. Remember to keep to a dry section of sidewalk and ensure there are no icy patches. This is applicable for walkers as well. Ice may not always be visible, but can be detected by placing your foot lightly on the ground prior to transferring your weight.

Nicole Moeckli | Argonaut

Even with this extra precaution, wear shoes with good soles. The more traction they have, the less likely you are to face plant. Sometimes this means foregoing fashionable footwear and instead choosing the less appealing, but much safer option. Do balancing and strengthening exercises too. The better your balance is, the less likely you are to fall. The strengthening exercises maintain your muscle mass during the often less-active winter months, which also helps. Take small steps, or just push your feet across the ground when walking in snow. This reduces the risk of step-

ping incorrectly and gives you greater control over your movement. Step down instead of forward. Pushing your foot forward may be a good idea in ice skating, but when trying to walk normally it is better to place it directly down. Free hands from pockets. This may not be the warmest way of walking, but with free hands, it is easier to catch yourself if you do slip. Wearing good-quality gloves will make this more comfortable. Dress warmly. Initially, this may seem unrelated to falling down. However, when cold, you are more likely to be fo-

cusing on becoming warm and not paying attention to where you are stepping. Hurrying too quickly to the next warm place may also present greater risks. Carry a walking-stick or a cane. This may seem weird, and often is not necessary if other precautions are taken. However, in especially bad conditions, this extra balance could be needed. With these methods, you will be better equipped to stay safe this winter, and be able to fully enjoy the winter season fall-free. Nina Rydalch can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

The University of Idaho New Arboretum made Best College Reviews’ list of the “50 most beautiful college arboretums.”

Bountiful beauty Alex Brizee Rawr When the stress of the school year starts to build, many students turn to the University of Idaho’s New Arboretum to unwind, take a stroll and enjoy the beauty of nature. It’s a beauty that doesn’t go unappreciated, either. This year, UI’s New Arboretum was listed on the Best College Reviews’ 50 most beautiful college arboretums. Paul Warnick, the arboretum horticulturalist and superintendent, said the university began planning for the new arboretum in 1982. While the arboretum began to take shape in the late ’90s,

Warnick said a committee of professors first came up with the idea decades before as a means of increasing plant diversity on campus. “Back in the ’70s there was a group of professors that got together from various colleges and they ... had a committee,” Warnick said. “Their concern at that time was there wasn’t enough plant diversity on campus — their solution was let’s make a new arboretum.” Warnick said now, there are over 15,000 documented plants and 2,500 different species of plants in the new arboretum. Warnick said he’s happy students appreciate the arboretum, and he views it as a gift to the entire campus. “I think what really is remarkable about our arboretum is that all of it is essentially a gift to the university,” Warnick said. Around the office Friday Fiction

Claire Whitley Rawr The newsroom of The Argonaut is a mysterious and terrifying place, especially when the editors all filter in half-dead and exhausted after an entire semester of reporting and editing the newspaper. And no, they aren’t quite what they seem.

Katelyn Hilsenbeck Last year, I found out that Katelyn was actually a ballerina with the Russian Ballet. As it turns out, she herself is Russian, just not one of the loud vodka-crazy ones. At least not from what she shows us. Maybe she saves that for when she goes to visit her family in Moscow, but I’ve never seen that side of her.

Ryan “Rupert” Tarinelli The puppet that Rupert carries around has been talking more since I started as an editor. In fact, Tom Brone, the ventriloquist doll he uses in Vegas, has been the one directing all the staff meetings since the school year started. Looking at Rupert, I started to notice that he has been a little wooden lately. Apparently, though, he and Tom are on their way to D.C. in order to perfect their act. I think it is a little more dark magic than that, but I chose not to ask.

Corrin Bond Those who have never met Corrin wouldn’t figure her to be a very loud individual. However, no one would assume she was a quiet, well-presented ambassador to the U.N. either. That is right. She is in the U.N. with Emma Watson and all of those fabulous people attempting to change the world. She was appointed because she was too nice to turn down the position, not because of her interest in geo-politics.

Jake Smith Jake Smith is a perfectly coiffed individual, and a high-demand men’s footwear model. I didn’t know that was a thing either. Apparently he gets paid to wear shoes so often that they get ruined. His canvas shoes last maybe a few months, and his new leather boots he swears will last longer. They won’t.

Tea Nelson One of the many things we didn’t know about Tea was that she has worked in the professional world

as a photography model since she was three. Apparently she just has one of those faces that photography companies like to snapshot and use in their advertisements. Tea also writes jingles for ads and sometimes does poses for Macy’s and the like. Rumor has it she was in the Macy’s Day Parade too, or at least photographed there. Or was that “Miracle on 34th Street?”

Jessica Bovee Did you know Christopher Nolan has a cousin? Neither did we until we found out Jessica Bovee is an international film director. She is apparently very popular in Chad, the Czech Republic and New Zealand. Last I heard she also worked on “Interstellar” with Nolan himself. No wonder she isn’t around the office much.

Hannah Shirley Hannah was on “The Last Comic Standing” last season and almost made it onto the televised broadcast. Apparently her blunt sarcasm didn’t register well through broadcast, which I find odd. I guess she also auditioned for “America’s Got Talent” as a comedian too, but again I think the journalistic humor doesn’t filter well across all occupations and ages.

Jack Olson If you’ve seen “Dancing With the Stars,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” or any type of dance reality show or televised dance competitions, you have seen Jack. He is the ultimate dance star. People request him to dance at all kinds of events, including the royal wedding. I also heard he has won several trophies from competitions. He doesn’t keep those in the office though, and he won’t confirm or deny the rumors.

Garrett Cabeza Fondly known as ‘Grandpa’ around the office, it is almost time for Garrett to move on in life. Maybe retire somewhere in the mountains and never speak to these “young kids” again. I heard he plans on moving out to a remote island somewhere near the Bahamas, but that could just be a rumor. Either way, Grandpa will be sorely missed when the semester ends.

Josh Grissom

Roles have been switched for Josh this semester. He started as an innocent reporter and then Katelyn yelled in Russian at him until he became an editor, and he is just a confused person who doesn’t really know what he got himself into. I almost feel bad for him, but I’m locked away in my own office and his contact with my insanity is minimal. So it can’t be too bad out there, right?

Lyndsie Kiebert Lyndsie is an aspiring novelist. She claims her works are of literary non-fiction, but looking at her notes it seems likes she is writing the next Twilight series. Unless “vampire” means something else these days. I don’t think this series will have what I guess people might call a happy ending. I saw something about grandchildren of VanHelsing and wolf’s blood being needed in Wiccan rituals. It was one of those things I didn’t want to ask about.

Erin Bamer She is a hack. She said she predicted the Cubs would lose the World Series, but only after they were down to the last game. She also said dead week will suck and finals will be over soon. And that it will snow in December. Erin claims her gypsy blood grants her the ability to see the future, I think she is a load of horse dung. But I guess a journalist has to get a profit somehow, right? I need to get my money back from her about the whole Trump thing.

Jordan Hollingshead Jordan is a quiet guard in a mental hospital. He spends most of his time looking after a single patient. While he doesn’t speak to many of the other editors, he finds himself able to talk to his ward easily. He does his best to take care of this ward, but he knows she is crazy and will likely get worse.

Claire Whitley (me) I was just a quiet, innocent blogger when I wrote this last year. Now I find myself wearing white jackets and chilling in padded rooms. Jordan does his best to take care of me in my cell, but we all know that it is only a matter of time before I go completely insane. But hey, at least I get to hug myself. The 12 gifts of Christmas As a college student, finding thoughtful, yet inexpensive gifts for family and friends is not exactly easy. We have hit the age where gifting arts and crafts doesn’t really cut it anymore. As for the presents we want to receive, we want presents to be fun and practical. But when your parents keep asking you for gift ideas, it is difficult to conjure up anything other than the obvious — money. This gift giving and gift-receiving guide is sure to put you on the right track for Christmas gift success. Gift giving ideas include:

School supplies Possibly the most useful gift to ask for this season is new school supplies. Notebooks, pens, sticky notes, all of the things we seem to run out of too quickly, are the best to receive.

Headphones Considering much of a college student’s day is filled with musical tunes via headphones, an updated pair might just be the best thing to ask for. There are plenty of headphones ranging in style and price. Hailey Stewart can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu
