Scorpio 10/23-11/21 This Halloween, you are destined for greatness. And by greatness I mean you’ll find yourself hanging around the snack table at the party you attend. Sagittarius 11/22-12/21

Aries 3/21-4/19

Blasting “Lamb of God” while you drive around in your Michael Myers mask is terrifying the locals and you need to stop.

Despite your best efforts to grow out your hair and be Thor for Halloween, everyone will think you are just Captain America with long hair. Maybe you should have actually watched The Avengers before purchasing that costume.

Capricorn 12/22-1/19 Your Halloween plans are going to fall through, so make a back-up agenda. And if all else fails, the new season of “American Horror Story” is on Netflix.

Aquarius 1/20-2/18 While the axe-wielding man following you is very real, no one is likely to take you seriously on Halloween.

Pisces 2/19-3/20

A haunted house could be great fun, but so could a night at home. Under a blanket. Away from the clowns. So many clowns … Just something to think about.

Taurus 4/20-5/20 Being the zombie version of Augustus Waters for Halloween is insensitive and will cause many tears among the adolescent females you come across. Too soon.

Gemini 5/21-6/21

Your mom may have said, “Oh honey, there are no monsters in your closet,” but this is Halloween and your roommate has a sick sense of humor.

Cancer 6/22-7/22 Group costumes for four are an excellent idea in most cases, but

Lyndsie Kiebert | Rawr

your inclusion of Draco in the Harry, Hermione, Ron trifecta feels wrong. Should have gone as the Beatles.

Leo 7/23-8/22 You’ll be disappointed (though not surprised) to know that the man in Wal-Mart wearing a towel as a poncho is not dressed in a costume — he is simply another Wal-Mart shopper.

Virgo 8/23-9/22 Don’t. Drink. The. Punch.

Libra 9/23-10/22 Neighborhood children are likely to ask if you’re dressed as Napoleon Dynamite when you are, in fact, not wearing a costume. The universe says November will bring you great wardrobe change. In other words, lose the moon boots.

Bring on the blood The best death scenes to ever grace the golden screen “Alien” One of the most famous and disturbing death scenes in film history didn’t skimp on the blood when an alien burst from John Hurt’s chest in the middle of dinner, shocking the characters, as well as millions of moviegoers. It’s so memorably graphic that people are still talking about it to this day.

“Planet Terror”

Bradley Burgess Rawr

Robert Rodriguez’s homage to the grindhouse flicks of the ’70s brought gallons of blood and some of the most graphic death scenes ever committed to celluloid, including, but not limited to, a child shooting his face off, a man melting before vomiting his intestines and a head being split in half.

The “Final Destination” Franchise

Take your pick from this legendary death reel. Whether it’s two

hot girls being burned alive in tanning beds, a head coming off between elevator doors or just a good old fashioned splatter from a bus, if you want to see some super creative deaths, give these movies a watch.

“Slither” “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn’s horror opus was no slouch when it came to gross-out moments. A man gets split in half, another mutates into a tentacle monster and a woman eats until she explodes. Just another day in horror land.

“Dredd” It might not be a horror film, but this shoot ‘em up showcased so much blood that it deserves a place on this list. From the opening scene, in which

a man’s head melts, to the final villain death — which should not be ruined — this is one bloody good time.

“Evil Dead” Say what you will about remakes, but this reimagining of the horror legend brought gallons of gore to the party. Tongues are split, arms are sawed off and viewers are grossed out.

“Django Unchained” As long as we’re mentioning nonhorror bloodbaths, let’s talk Quentin Tarantino’s western revenge flick with so much blood spraying from every corpse, that you’ll worry about the victims’ blood pressure. Bradley Burgess can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

Beyond decoration The first thing everyone thinks about when October rolls around is pumpkins and Jack-o-lanterns, but did you know pumpkin is actually a berry? Like sunflower seeds and tomatoes, pumpkins are actually fruit — and just about every part of this amazing fruit can be eaten.

Pumpkin seeds

CLAIRE WHITLEY CRUMBS

After carving the pumpkin, don’t discard the seeds. With a little bit of butter, salt, pepper and perhaps a little red pepper for those adventurous types, roasted pumpkin seeds can be made into a nice and easy snack.

Pumpkin pie Yes, pumpkin pie filling can be made from real pumpkins. It doesn’t have

to be bought in a can. All it takes is a hot oven, a food processor, an extra hour and some oil. Of course it won’t have all the processed food, sugary goodness that pumpkin pie has come to epitomize, but it is still good. Everyone smothers pumpkin pie with whipped cream anyway.

Pumpkin bread The least-known edible option for pumpkin leftovers is pumpkin bread. It is a little like zucchini bread or some other gourd-bread, but it can easily be combined with some salted caramel icing and made into a sweet dessert option or breakfast for the sugar addicts. The great pumpkin Jack o’ lanterns may be a weird tradition, but they’re a lot of fun to make Jack o’lanterns are such an integral part of Halloween, but no one ever really questions why. Sure, Halloween is full of weird traditions, but what’s the purpose behind gutting pumpkins, carving them and filling them with fire? It’s a strange practice, and it dates back to far longer than expected. There are plenty of legends regarding the creation of jack o’ lanterns, but according to a popular Halloween blog, halloweenlove.com, the origin story of jack o’ lanterns dates back to ancient Irish legends. The legends hold Austin Maas that a thief named Jack Rawr once tricked the devil into promising to never take his soul. Unfortunately, when he died, Jack was refused entry into heaven because of his evil nature. He was forced to wander through the darkness between life and death. In an act of mercy the devil threw Jack a single glowing ember, which Jack then placed in a carved turnip to make a lantern. Thus the name Jack o’ Lantern was born. In an effort to keep the angry spirit of Jack happy and scare away other evil spirits, people would carve pumpkins with frightening images and light them on their doorstep. Carving pumpkins into jack o’ lanterns has become such an integral part of the Halloween season that there are entire TV shows dedicated to it. I remember watching Pumpkin Wars on HGTV and being amazed by the intricate designs the artists would carve. When it comes to carving pumpkins in the 21st century, the bar has officially been raised and geometric shapes carved to look like menacing faces will no longer cut it. But unless your pumpkin is a genuinely terrifying work of art, scary pumpkins just aren’t scary anymore and won’t work either.

A compilation of the best movie villains that cinema has to offer

Hollywood has produced some classic villains over the years. Whether they were originally brought to life out of the pages of a novel or first made their debut on the big screen, these villains are the best of the best.

The Joker (Heath Ledger) in “The Dark Knight” No villain list would be complete without this legendary performance. The late Heath Ledger brought his A-Game to this terrifying rendition of the clown prince of crime, and it paid off. Millions were terrified and the world got one of the best villains of all time. Bradley Anton Chigurh Burgess (Javier Bardem) in Rawr

“No Country for Old Men” Another Oscar-winning villain, this creep kills almost everyone he meets, stares at you intently and offers a coin toss to determine Rawr whether or not you live. For more Rawr content, visit That’s the uiargonaut.com definition of scary.

Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in “The Silence of the Lambs” Even though he spends most of the movie behind bars, Dr. Lecter made everyone’s skin crawl as a brilliant cannibal who tried to help an FBI agent catch a killer. Nicole Moecklil | Rawr

Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Nurses are supposed to help the sick and injured, but this nurse seemed to have missed that memo. She takes sadistic pleasure in making the patients of a mental hospital miserable, and if that means lobotomizing Jack Nicholson, that’s all right with her.

John Doe (Kevin Spacey) in “Se7en” One of the most sadistic and remorseless serial killers in the history of film, this mystery man followed the seven deadly sins to the letter by killing

people to mirror their crimes, including tying a man to a bed for a year until he rotted to death.

The T-1000 (Robert Patrick) in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”

The scariest kind of villain is one with no remorse. This liquid metal killing machine is simply there to kill John Conner and there’s nothing scarier than something you can’t reason with. Bradley Burgess can be reached at

UI students pose in their costumes after participating in the annual Ridenbaugh Haunted House on Sunday, October 25. Whitney Hilliard Rawr Brave souls who entered the Annual Ridenbaugh Haunted House on Sunday were greeted by Caitlin Wikel, a UI student and this year’s head of committee for the haunted house. Wikel said she took on the task of organizing the event because she wanted to keep the haunted house alive — the tradition, that is. “There was a really big potential that we couldn’t even do it this year because of scheduling conflicts,” Wikel said. “Nobody wanted to do it on a Sunday, especially homecoming Sunday.” When Wikel first participated in the haunted house last year she was disguised as a tour group member, or what she called a “plant.” “I was a plant, so I pretended that I was just some random person who wanted to be in the haunted house,” Wikel said. “We had a couple rooms where they would then grab the plants — I went in with a group

A murder in rewind Bradley Burgess Rawr Mike heaved the body over his shoulders, walking down to the lake. With a great force, he threw it into the water. Mike stared down at Karen’s bloody face, frozen in her last scream, as she sunk down to the bottom. Too bad, he thought. She was pretty. Karen crawled across the dirt and leaves as Mike approached her. He stepped on top of her ankle, an audible crack ringing alongside her scream, which was suddenly and quickly silenced. She sprung free from the cabin, running as fast as she could. Further and further through the woods, she ran, her heartbeat accelerating as she heard him chasing her. Then, her high heels caught on a branch, snapping right off and sending her down to the ground. “My friends …” Karen stammered. “How… how could you?” Mike moved closer to her. “If only you knew, Karen.” Karen seized her opportunity and kicked him between the legs, racing for the door. “They recognized me from the news,” Mike stated flatly. “I couldn’t let them live.” Karen’s breath halted in her throat. She looked past him, searching for an escape route, when she saw the bodies. A tear ran down Karen’s face as she saw Rachel’s face among the blood. Haunting the Palouse The Haunted Palouse has been providing frights for Halloween lovers for 13 years Luis Torres Rawr While most haunted houses are created to provide the public with some quality scares, Janet Barstow said Haunted Palouse had a different start. Haunted Palouse, a set of haunted houses located in Palouse, Washington, began in 2002 and Barstow, a UI alumna, said the haunted house was originally a fundraiser with the proceeds going to the Roy Chatters Newspaper &

Barstow said Haunted Palouse couldn’t have been done without a group of people that has helped the event grow since its inception. “We have a core group of people that has been doing it for the whole time,” Barstow said. “Every year we pick up more and more volunteers, so you have that stability of people who have done it for 13 years.” In order to keep the event fresh, Barstow said they change the theme of the
