IB Introduction Welcome and Introduction Lisa McCahon, IB Coordinator

Congratulations to our IB graduates. 302 seniors participated in 967 IB courses. 64% are BIPOC (Black, idigienous, students of color), 37% are low income, and 49% are bilingual. Congratulations to the 45 IB Diploma students who participated in 6 IB courses plus the IB Core consisting of TOK, the Extended Essay and the CAS Program. Congratulations to the 50 AVID seniors, many who will be the first in their families to attend college. Congratulations to our Health Academy students, all who participated in IB English. Congratulations to our IB BIPOC students, and our IB first generation students. Congratulations to our IB LGBTQ/ non-binary students. Congratulations to all our IB Course students in the Class of 2021. What does it mean to you to be an IB student? What challenged you academically or emotionally in IB that you endured? What risks did you take? How did you step out of your comfort zone? What did you think was undoable but you did it? What did you learn from your IB journey about yourself? About the world? Yes, you worked hard to study for tests and write your IAs. But that is not all IB is about. You had to think for yourself. You had to be creative. You had to think like the professionals in the real world. How does a scientist set up and conduct an experiment? How does a historian ask important questions, gather research and present their findings? How and why does an author make choices in their texts, whether that text is a novel, poem, blog, podcast, music lyrics or an advertisement? What choices do businesses make as they create their business plan and why? How does an artist hang a show and present their artist perspective to the viewers? You did all that. More important than finding the answers, you learned how to ask questions. And that is what I hope stays with you. Pay attention to what you are curious about in this world. Push yourself to learn more about that. Know that true learning is not the end product, but the journey that requires you to ask questions. To do this, you must take risks. Many of you may feel scared to ask a question, afraid you will appear less intelligent to your peers, wondering if what you ask or say will further the very stereotypes you may be combating from a world full of institutionalized racism and social inequalities. Please know that the questions are what demonstrate your ability to learn and grow. They show you care about making sense of the world around you. I can’t emphasize enough how much value you all bring to the IB classroom. You all have unique and interesting ideas because they are rooted in your individual experiences and perspectives. I commend those of you who took the risk to share those ideas. I recognize the patterns of often oppressive historical structures in education that may have prevented some folks from feeling safe to share. I challenge all of you to trust your voice and share those ideas with the world. I challenge those of you who often share to also remember to create space for others. To listen. Some of us are extroverts. Some of us introverts. But we all have questions to ask. We all have ideas to share. And we all have things to still understand. So know when it is time to push yourself and let your voice be heard. And know when it is time to stop, remain quiet and really listen. This is not an individual pursuit. You are part of a larger community and we all do better when the collective group does better. It’s our hope that the IB program helped you better see your own value as well as the value of those in your community. 2

Felicitaciones a todos nuestros estudiantes del Curso IB en la clase de graduación del 2021. ¿Qué significa para ti ser un estudiante del IB? ¿Qué te desafió académica o emocionalmente en IB que resististe? ¿Qué riesgos tomaste? ¿Cómo saliste de tu zona de confort? ¿Qué pensaste que no podías hacer pero lo hiciste? ¿Qué aprendiste sobre ti mismo en tu trayecto con el IB? ¿Acerca del mundo? Sí, trabajaste duro para estudiar para los exámenes y redactar tu IA. Pero eso no es todo lo que es IB. Tenías que pensar por ti mismo. Tenías que ser creativo. Tenías que pensar como los profesionales del mundo real. ¿Cómo prepara y realiza un científico un experimento? ¿Cómo hace un historiador preguntas importantes, recopila investigaciones y presenta sus hallazgos? ¿Cómo y por qué un autor toma decisiones en sus textos, ya sea que el texto sea una novela, un poema, un blog, un podcast, una letra musical o un anuncio? ¿Qué decisiones toman las empresas al crear su plan de negocios y por qué? ¿Cómo un artista diseña una exposición y presenta su perspectiva de artista a los espectadores? Words of Commendation Sequoia High School Principal

Hello Sequoia IB Scholars. On behalf of the Sequoia faculty let me say congratulations. It has been a privilege to watch you grow, overcome, and succeed over the last few years. The success will withstand scrutiny -- it cannot be taken away. You’ve been up to the challenge. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. I am perhaps most proud of the example you’ve set for all of us in your kindness and sense of right and wrong. Every time you invited someone sitting alone to join your group - or better yet, gone and sat with them. Every time you paused to give someone else an opportunity to share, or better, made SURE they had a chance to share their ideas. When you looked first for the good in the people you met, and if it was hard to find, you tried to draw it out...that is what made me the most proud. You will have another opportunity to show your character tomorrow and the day after that and the results of these invisible triumphs will change the world. You will be scholars, but remember knowledge without character is empty. You will be entrepreneurs, but remember commerce without morality is empty. You will be scientists, but remember science without humanity is empty. You will be leaders, but always remember that leadership without principle is empty. If you know you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. Congratulations on the tests you’ve completed to get here tonight. The knowledge and skills you developed to get here are awesome. Stands for Creativity, Activity, Service Component of the IB Diploma These are hours students must do outside of their classroom studies. Not only are they required to be involved but they must reflect throughout their two years, continuously growing and learning. As IB says, CAS is both doing and thinking These students did an exceptional job with CAS shown either through their CAS logs, their ManageBac portfolios or their CAS Interviews These students put in a significant number of hours and demonstrated great growth and self-reflection. Linda Patience did so much for the IB Program. She worked very hard up to her last day at Sequoia. She accomplished millions of jobs behind the scenes, allowing for the IB Program to run smoothly. She paid attention to detail. She was thorough and dedicated. She was always prepared and helped others be prepared. She cared greatly about her work product. She welcomed responsibilities. She adjusted to change. She supported the people around her. She was sincere. She anticipated problems and offered solutions before they even happened. She worked independently and was self directed. She ensured her job was always done under high pressure deadlines. She made things work! She believed in the IB Program and its core values and this combined with her dogged work ethic, makes her an unforgettable part of Sequoia High School’s history

Through IB, I developed my ability to think critically about a subject, whether in writing a History essay, approaching a novel from a new literary “lens,” or deriving a formula in math. my CAS progress. I began my journey by taking a risk and didn’t know if I was capable enough to fulfill CAS since I lacked extracurricular activities and hobbies. Despite this, I took it upon myself to not give up and explored my community at school and decided to do some self-exploration to find my interests and passions. Also, I’m proud of myself for getting through IB classes when I doubted my capabilities for a while. MR. MOAVENI helped all of the IBDP kids so much by creating our Extended Essay calendar and chasing us down

for our assignments on big deadline days, even for students he didn’t teach. Though I’m sure many of us found it annoying at times, it helped us reach the finish line and reminded us that we are capable of reaching the high goals we set for ourselves. MS. BANISTER treats all of her students as people over students. Personally, this helped me realize the importance of balance and that straight A’s are not the key to fulfillment in life. —Georgia Power I want to give a shout-out to MR.
