Welcome and Introduction Lisa McCahon, IB Coordinator As the IB Coordinator, I want to congratulate all of you for challenging yourself in the IB Program. This year we had 296 seniors participate in IB with 50 full Diploma Candidates and 246 IB Course students. Of these 296 seniors, 63% are students of color and 39% are low income. I would like to acknowledge some special groups within our IB senior class: A huge congrats to both our Health Careers Academy and AVID cohorts in which all members took IB. I also want to acknowledge the families, parents and guardians of our IB seniors. Thank you for encouraging your students and supporting them through the rigor and challenge of IB. I want to honor all the ways IB has made you grow. To be an IB student means you have stepped up to a challenge, pushed yourself outside your comfort zone, looked at the world through different perspectives, managed your time, engaged in reflection, taken risks, solved problems, and learned how to think critically. You have developed attributes of the IB Learner Profile such as being balanced, open-minded, caring and principled, and you have respected others’ ideas, cultures and experiences. IB has allowed you to grow not only intellectually, but also emotionally and ethically. So why does this all matter? Is it not just learning the information that is most important? To be able to recall the facts when asked on an exam? Doesn’t an engineer in the real world just need to apply their math and science expertise? Doesn’t a doctor just need to know the scientific facts related to diagnosing and curing? In a recent study by the Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) published in September 2019, they examined the desired employability skills in relation to the IB teachings. They examined the skills desired by employers in the O*NET database developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the U.S. One of the major conclusions of this study is that knowledge itself is not sufficient but that jobs also require skills, character and meta-learning (how we reflect and adapt). The Bookings Institute identified needed 21st Century skills and concluded that communication, creativity and critical thinking were most essential. Within that study, they found employers most valued the following characteristics: ethics, leadership, resilience, curiosity, mindfulness and courage. This is exactly what you have done in IB. Yes, you learned lots of information, but you also gained skills and character. You are ready to contribute to this world in whatever field you pursue in an ethical and principled manner. You are ready to work with others and really listen to their ideas and perspectives. You are ready to communicate. You are ready to solve problems. You are ready to face challenges and persevere. You are ready to fail and reflect on that failure as you grow from it. You are ready to make decisions and consider the impact of those decisions on others. You are ready to never be stuck in what you know but rather continue to be curious and learn. You are ready to support others when they want to give up. You are ready to make this a better world.

2

I know this year has challenged you even more with the pandemic. I too am sad we cannot celebrate in the same space together, but I know this will only make you more resilient and stronger. You have a unique spot in our world’s history. We will always remember the Class of 2020 and what you endured to finish up your high school career. We are so proud of what you have done. Thank you for being part of the IB Program. Each and every one of you made it a better place for all. Good luck in all your future pathways and we hope to see you in person again soon.

Sequoia High School Principal CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL IB DIPLOMA AND CERTIFICATE STUDENTS ON A JOB WELL DONE.

Your academic abilities are impressive and well-worth celebrating. You’ve had your best work scrutinized and you’ve been up to the challenge. You should be very proud of your accomplishments.

In setting the bar high for yourself and exceeding those expectations, you have achieved at an elite level. I hope along the way, however, you’ve learned the danger of your elite status cutting you off from your humanity. For, while we celebrate elite levels of performance, we must not succumb to elitism, which inhibits us from lifting those around us up. Elitism inhibits us from finding the best in those around us and drawing it out. It makes it harder for us to focus our talents on the goodness of the world in meaningful ways. How we use our talents: this is the test that matters most. If my experience at Sequoia is any indication, you are passing this test, too. Every time you’ve invited someone sitting alone to join your group—or better yet, gone and sat with them—we noticed. Other opportunities to pass this test will arise tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that. The results will change the world. Among you will be scholars, but remember knowledge without character is empty. You will be entrepreneurs, but remember commerce without morality is a dead end. You will be scientists, but remember science without humanity is war. You will be leaders, but always remember that leadership without principle is static. Congratulations on all you’ve done at Sequoia. The knowledge and skills you developed to get to this point are awesome. Never lose focus on your character and the lessons about it that your teachers, parents, and friends have laid out. It is your character that will be the ultimate study guide for the tests that await you. On behalf of the Sequoia administration, we say: “Way to go, IB scholars” —SEAN PRIEST, Principal
