HOW AND WHY YOU GOT STARTED ON A HEALTH JOURNEY? Around 4 years ago, I gained a lot of weight and no longer fit into my jeans. I had been feeling quite insecure about my weight for several months and had a turning point when none of my old clothes fit me. I realized I am responsible for my own lifestyle and did not want to live a life where I feel insecure or self-conscious. I started researching fitness and nutrition to see what was necessary to turn my life around. I was extremely naïve and had no clue where to start. After extensive reading about what to eat and how to train, I started going to the gym and following a clean diet. Almost immediately I started seeing results on a weekly basis. I discovered that although it is hard, there is nothing more rewarding than health and a fit body. I lost a total of 15 kgs and 5 dress sizes.
I WAS EXTREMELY NAÏVE AND HAD NO CLUE WHERE TO START. AFTER EXTENSIVE READING ABOUT WHAT TO EAT AND HOW TO TRAIN, I STARTED GOING TO THE GYM AND FOLLOWING A CLEAN DIET
WHAT DID YOU IMAGINE THE OUTCOME WOULD BE? My goal at that point was to lose weight and fit back into my clothes. However, I reached my goal and ended up becoming even leaner than before I had gained weight.
DID YOU THINK THAT YOU WOULD HAVE GOTTEN TO WHERE YOU ARE? HOW DIFFICULT HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN FOR YOU? I never would have imagined that I would have started competing in bikini fitness competitions abroad. I was too insecure to walk around on the beach without a towel, so the thought of doing it on stage in a bikini would have terrified me. It has been really difficult and required a lot of hard work and endless sacrifice, but it has been worth every second of pain.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION TO GO INTO BIKINI COMPETITIONS? HOW DID YOUR FAMILY TAKE TO IT? WHAT DO YOU ADVISE OUR READERS THAT WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? Once I had reached my fitness goal of losing weight and reaching a certain size, I wanted to take things to the next level. My dream was to step on stage in a bikini and compete with top fitness models. Training for a competition requires you to push to your limits both mentally and physically with extreme discipline to get to where you want to be. It changes you as a person and teaches you discipline, making you a stronger and more confident person. My family has been incredibly supportive towards my competitions. They motivate me and make me feel proud about the sport I participate in. One of my greatest supporters is my husband. After my first show, I was so exhausted and said I don’t think I want to do this again. He encouraged me and said I should definitely step up on stage one more time. I took his words to heart and ended up winning first place in my second competition. If your readers would like to follow in my footsteps, I would advise them first to be in good shape and be at their ideal weight. The next step is to decide on a specific category in a bodybuilding show as there are lots of different ones. The category I compete in is called bikini. The final step is to apply to bodybuilding shows abroad and find a good coach to set them up with a training and nutritional program. Training for a bodybuilding contest is quite different than just training to lose weight and would require professional guidance if they are not sure what to do.
YOU RECENTLY WON THE UK CHAMPIONSHIPS. WHAT STYLE OF ROUTINE DID YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW AND FOR HOW LONG? Winning first place was a real accomplishment especially that I was competing against some really beautiful women. I trained for around 3 months following a rigid diet and exercise program. I lifted heavy weights around 5 times a week and did up to an hour of cardio about 6 days a week. This period is quite challenging and requires you to follow your diet to the letter and stop drinking alcohol. Your diet starts off easy to follow but then gets more and more difficult as the months pass by and you start to get closer to the competition date. I was especially pleased to receive an endorsement from the Minister of Youth and Sports to represent Lebanon which helped me gain media attention and raise awareness about female bodybuilders. Many people believe that women who lift weights will become bulky and look like men and my goal is to change these misconceptions.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? Other than winning first place, I would say my greatest accomplishment is helping other people and showing them that they too can achieve their fitness goals if they put their mind to it. I’ve been really pleased to receive many positive emails from visitors to my website telling me that I’ve changed their life or helped them take on a healthier lifestyle. Many people don’t believe in themselves and feel like it is just too difficult and I love using my story as an example to prove them wrong. I’m just a normal person like anyone else with average genes. If I can go from insecure to competing on stage against top fitness models, then there is nothing holding anyone else back, regardless of their age, weight or current fitness level. Helping other people gives me a sense of achievement and happiness to know that I have made a difference in their lives.
WHAT IS HEALTH AND FITNESS TO YOU? Health and fitness has become something I live for. I see fitness as my passion in life and something that has changed me for the better. It has made me a happier, more confident and a stronger person. I have experienced a whole other lifestyle of being sedentary and unfit and know just how rewarding it is to take care of yourself. Fitness and health is the one thing that must be earned and cannot be handed down to you. I always tell people if you are not going to take care of yourself for the way you look or feel, do it for your health in the long-term. I’m sure everyone wants to live until they are old and grey and watch their grandchildren grow up.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED A WHOLE OTHER LIFESTYLE OF BEING SEDENTARY AND UNFIT AND KNOW JUST HOW REWARDING IT IS TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
TELL US ABOUT ‘START LIVING RIGHT’. WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE BEHIND IT? Start Living Right is an online website which I created to combine my passion of writing with my passion of fitness. I wanted to start something that would help others achieve their fitness goals and share my story to inspire them. My site currently receives around 8,000 visitors a month. I realized that there are many people like my old self who do not know where to start or what to do in order to live a healthy lifestyle. I see my website as a place where anyone who doesn’t know anything about fitness can go and receive real, solid advice and educate themselves. My website is extremely honest; for example, I will never tell anyone that they can achieve their goals without putting in hard work or effort.

YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED THE FIRST EVER FITNESS APPLICATION IN LEBANON. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT? I just released a mobile version of my website called Start Living Right and yes, it is the first fitness app in Lebanon! It is a free application and offers many useful tools to help people achieve their fitness goals. It includes all of the articles, quizzes and blog posts from my website along with nutritional calculators and fat loss calculators. People can simply search “Start Living Right” on their smart phone store and download it instantly. I see it as a handy application to provide useful information to people on the go. My goal is to expand on this and keep on adding useful features.
PEOPLE CAN SIMPLY SEARCH “START LIVING RIGHT” ON THEIR SMART PHONE STORE AND DOWNLOAD IT INSTANTLY
DO YOU THINK THE AVERAGE LEBANESE IS AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? OR IS THERE A LACK OF EDUCATION? I do believe Lebanon can be better informed about the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. I receive a lot of emails from people in Lebanon and the Middle East who are incredibly uninformed. There are a lot of misconceptions which still exist and it is sad to see some health professionals prescribing dangerous advice. People believe scams such as promoting low calorie diets, cutting out major food groups or even the belief that weightlifting is bad for your health. Many Lebanese people take unregulated diet pills or fat burners that can be incredibly unsafe and life threatening. My goal is to correct these misconceptions and teach people the safe and healthy way to go about losing weight.
LOOKING THROUGH YOUR APP, WE SEE THAT YOU PROMOTE A HEALTHY LIFE WITH A HEALTHIER LOOK, MUSCLE TONE AND DEFINITION RATHER THAT THE TYPICAL FRAGILE SIZE 0 LOOK. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE LEBANON THAT STILL PROMOTES SKINNY AND AS THE WAY TO LOOK? Unfortunately there is a belief in Lebanon that “skinny” is healthy. Many young girls email me and tell me that their ultimate goal is to become thin. They tell me they have been starving themselves and can’t figure out why they haven’t lost weight yet. My response is always that being skinny does not necessarily mean you are healthy. Instead of obsessing over becoming thin, I believe a woman’s goal should be to become healthy, fit and strong. If women obsess over becoming thin, they might become incredibly frustrated and resort to extreme measures, such as starving, to get to where they want to be. Many women genetically will never have a “thin” look which is why they can end up feeling frustrated. Setting a goal to become healthy is far more achievable and rewarding. One of my favorite quotes is “skinny isn’t sexy, but health is.”

WHAT DO YOU ADVISE THE READER THAT DOESN’T KNOW WHERE TO START? I believe there are four ingredients towards transforming your body. The first is motivation. This involves really believing in yourself and being mentally prepared to put in the hard work that is necessary to build the body you want. The second is nutrition. A good diet makes up around 80% of your results. People should focus on eating a combination of whole-grains, healthy fats and lean protein while paying attention to overall calorie intake. The third and fourth ingredients include weightlifting and some cardio. Weightlifting helps with fat loss and will build up your metabolism. Cardio boosts your endurance and burns fat. Finally, the hardest thing is getting started and making your lifestyle a habit. I always tell people that fitness is a mental challenge, not a physical one. Someone just needs to work hard for approximately 3 to 4 weeks before it becomes much easier. It is all about getting started, believing in yourself and pushing forward for long enough to see results.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR MAYA NASSAR? I have a lot of future projects coming up! Along with working on my goal of opening my own fitness center, I will be making constant improvements to my website and phone application to keep on guiding other people who are struggling to achieve their fitness goals. My next goal is to compete in another bikini fitness competition in April 2015 in the UK. I plan on pushing even harder than I did this year and presenting myself on stage in my best ever condition.

FROM SHOOTING WAR TO FASHION AND GLAMOUR BY KAYLYN HLAVATY
Sitting in Roger Moukarzel’s production studio in Karantina, one can see the diversity in his subjects and his creative approach for displaying his latest exhibit just by looking at the art, photographs and decorations that tell a visual story of his career. Born in 1962 in a conflicted country and as someone who grew up during the middle of the Lebanese war, Moukarzel used his early love of photography to document the unfolding events in his native country. “I was living in a place where there was always an ambience of war and destruction around me. I borrowed my brother’s camera and started taking photos on my own,” said Moukarzel. He adds, “I always had an interest in photography.”

Since the age of 15, Moukarzel hasn’t put the camera down and maintains his energy to create something new and impactful. He remembers photographing an event and being recognized by magazines for his coverage. He started working for Sygma and then became the East Beirut Bureau chief for Reuters. As someone who was young and new to the world of photojournalism, Moukarzel said it was a struggle to capture what he saw while also keeping his emotions in check with every shot. Every day in the field was a constant game between his emotions and getting the shot that captured what he saw, heard and smelled.

“I didn’t stop being emotional during the war. This was my strength. On the day I wasn’t emotional; I would leave and put down my camera,” states Moukarzel. The war rids you of your senses to a certain extreme where you become a warrior and not a photographer. I was very careful not to cross this line.” For some, transitioning from days on the battlefield to days on set surrounded with models and beauty seems like two different worlds to an outsider. By the time the 80’s rolled around, Moukarzel said he was fed up, so he quit his time on the battlefield and headed west to Paris. “During the war, you run a lot, you see things, but you don’t have the time to stop and dig deeper under the surface. With the war, you go with the flow and you’re quick as a bullet,” said Moukarzel.

He says the shift was ‘a natural one’. He traded scenes of violence for scenes of glamour and fashion. He shifted from skimming the surface of his subjects to peeling away the first layer and revealing something underneath the glamour and societal labels. Roger said he never lost spontaneity in fashion photography. Those in the industry liked his vision in photography and fashion. He interjects saying, “I was never a mellow fashion photographer.”

HE NEVER LOST SPONTANEITY IN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY When he was shooting the war, he would do fashion style framing and posing with his subjects like the militia or kids. He brought his strengths of shooting war into his fashion and life style work. Although his focus is on fashion shooting, he doesn’t call himself a fashion photographer.

CULTURE CLASH The content of Roger’s exhibition causes questions to be asked and stereotypes to be challenged. The way he display’s his photography is just as important to him as the photos. “I don’t classify myself as a photographer anymore. I classify myself as a designer. It is a combination of filming, photographing and exhibiting. My exhibitions are not normal or simple. They’re an event.” explained Roger. From displaying his collection, “The Voile” at Saint Joseph University to his “Turning Disability into Ability” exhibition at Place de l’Etoile in Beirut, Roger communicates his exhibitions in a creative way so that each space compliments his photography. As a photographer who has trekked all over the world for the next best pictures and inspiration, Roger maintains Beirut as his home base and center where all creative things flourish. “Simply, this is where I get inspired. I love Beirut,” says Roger. When asked what keeps him doing what he’s doing. He answers, “This is the way I express myself. I can’t live without doing this.”

While making the switch away from fashion photography, Roger never stopped from working on his photography documentaries and sharing them with the public. He found exploring society’s stereotypes through images and challenging the status quo as at the forefront of his work.
I’M NOT A FASHION VICTIM. I’M A FASHION THINKER AND A FASHION BELIEVER His personal work has been showcased in more than 15 different exhibitions worldwide. Some of his work that is the most influential were the three dimensional looks at different aspects of Lebanon’s history and culture. After September 11th, 2001, Roger did an exhibition that showed six veiled Lebanese women from six different religions and how the veil isn’t limited to just Muslims. It brought this symbol of world division to light. Also, another exhibition that brought a long history of rivalry to light was his photography documentary of Maronite Christians and Druze photographed in similar circumstances to show how each sect is not too different from the next when religion isn’t the focus.

It is a disturbing fact that many Lebanese families have embraced foreign languages at the expense of their mother tongue. Conversations have long been sprinkled with French and English, but now Arabic is really falling behind. Many fear the new generation is losing its connection to their native language, which is becoming inferior to other languages. Parents usually pride themselves on their children’s fluency in English or French. It became a matter of prestige and modernity. On their defense, they claim that teaching kids a foreign language is a must to secure a good education, thus, a bright future in a more globalized world, noting that all excellent schools are based on French- or Americancurriculums, where Arabic comes second, or even third.
IT IS A DISTURBING FACT THAT MANY LEBANESE FAMILIES HAVE EMBRACED FOREIGN LANGUAGES AT THE EXPENSE OF THEIR MOTHER TONGUE Children and youths in primary and secondary schools exclusively speak English or French, not only in classes but even at home. An increasing number of our youngsters are incapable of forming a sentence, reciting the Arabic alphabets, or writing correctly in Arabic. Students are entering college without the necessary tools to handle the country’s official language. Technology has made things worse. Nowadays, it is very common to see youths, particularly when using social media and text messages, communicating in English or writing Arabic in Latin characters. “At my school it’s cooler to speak English. Arabic is looked down upon” says Jana, “it’s not that I don’t like Arabic or I’m ashamed of it, but simply I’m not used to it. Nobody encouraged me to read or write in Arabic. It seems difficult”.

What jana said intersects with Mrs. Lina Saad’s point of view. Saad, a preschool and day care director, explains “when a preschooler is admitted to our daycare, the parents demand we address them in English/French to enhance their dialect. We have to follow suit. They want their kids to be fluent in foreign languages so they can take advantage in school. Most private schools teach three languages now, but unfortunately, Arabic is not a priority”. Saad admits “that is a totally wrong perception; kids will get affected later in higher education”. She herself had faced such problem. Her daughter is an A student in all subjects, except for Arabic. Tracing back the problem, lina Saad doesn’t deny that she should shoulder the responsibility, “I have never read to her or encouraged her to read books in Arabic when she was a child. Every time we head to the library, we end up with a bunch of English books merely; this had a bearing on her academic performance.
SINCE, ARABS ARE NOT LIVING THEIR GOLDEN AGE, THEY TRY TO IMITATE THE MORE POWERFUL AND CULTURED NATIONS After all, we can’t blame schools for putting Arabic in the bottom of the educational pyramid”. But, are there any solutions to make up for these mistakes? “Remedial courses in Arabic have become a renowned fixture, to my daughter and her colleagues. Clearly, they can’t write essays or elaborate on their thoughts in Arabic, that’s why it is important to persuade them gradually to read in our native language. Better late than never” she adds. Other parents may choose an easier road: getting a foreign passport for their kids to get them dispensed from Arabic in official exams! Dr. Eman Bikai, a novelist and a university lecturer who holds a PhD in Arabic and children’s literature, has a different approach. She considers that “since, Arabs are not living their golden age, they try to imitate the more powerful and cultured nations. Parents take pride in the fact that their children are fluent in English /French, and have lower grades in Arabic. This encourages the child to focus on learning a foreign language in order to meet his parent’s aspirations”.

Bikai, the author of several children’s books, also stresses the fact that “Arabic materials introduced in elementary grades have proven to be difficult and unpleasant, as a result the child will lose interest, he might find a resort in Western literature, which is presented in a much easier input by expert educators who know exactly how to attract the child to their language”. “To face this problem, we have to open the door to more creative teaching methods. Parents must help too through introducing children’s books, stories, and Arabic magazines to their kids right from the beginning so that they grasp the language in its pure classical form and develop a love for it,” she concluded.
ONE SHOULD MASTER HIS OR HER OWN TONGUE It is to be noted that February 21 is International Mother Language Day, recognized by the United Nations as a day “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world. It is a day when all involved in multilingualism, whether personally or professionally, should stop and consider speaking only in their native language”. Everyone wants to learn English because it is the global language. However, our languages are part of our heritage and civilization. It is ideal that before a person can claim authority in another language, one should master his or her own tongue. It’s the parent’s responsibility to teach their children their native language first.

When French designer Benedicte de Vanssay de Blavous Moubarak moved with her husband Raja Moubarak and their children to the bustling metropolitan city of Beirut, Lebanon, she was immediately drawn to the charming style of traditional Levantine houses. These houses, scattered around the neighborhoods such as Ashrafieh and Gemmayze, were inspired by the former inhabitants of this city: French, Ottoman and Venetian architecture. As the years passed by with conflicts and the desire to build modern, taller buildings, these house are becoming fading memories of Beirut’s rich historical past. “I am very sensitive to the beauty and saw the beautiful traditional Lebanese homes disappearing before my eyes. I could find in these houses a rich past, with diverse influences including that of my own country. It was seeing the heritage of the country disappear that was painful, especially when very little attention is paid to preservation efforts,” said Benedicte.
I COULD FIND IN THESE HOUSES A RICH PAST, WITH DIVERSE INFLUENCES INCLUDING THAT OF MY OWN COUNTRY It was the realization that these houses may soon become obsolete in the landscape of Beirut and greater Lebanon that motivated Benedicte decided to do something about it. Benedicte along with her husband and friends began a hunt for the treasures. One homeowner’s or junk yard’s trash is another person’s treasure. In this case, the treasures were discarded wrought iron balustrades, railings and window frames. Benedicte shares the experience of when she went to search high and low for pieces of heritage across the country to every village, town, salvage yard and junk yard in Lebanon and Syria. In her broken Arabic, she would ask people if they had seen old pieces of architecture. It would take days, weeks and sometimes even months. Before the war in Syria, Benedicte remembers vividly the trip she took with an American/French friend to Syria with the goal to salvage a disappearing heritage. At the end of the drive, they ended up in the middle of the country side in Aleppo. In the scorching heat, there was a forge of men working to melt down metal scraps.

“I felt transported back hundreds of years ago as I imagined that the work methods had changed little since then. I remember the expression on their faces. They couldn’t understand who in their right mind would be interested in a piece of junk,” Benedicte explains After collecting a variety of salvaged materials, Benedicte and her husband maintained the desire to keep the architectural heritage of Lebanon alive. However, there were other issues in society that they wanted to address. One of the main concerns and one of the current missions behind their social enterprise is the lack of access to training and employment opportunities for the marginalized and disabled individuals. In 2006, Benedicte created 2b design, after Benedicte’s first name and her husband Raja’s last name. The name ‘Beyt’ means house/home in Hebrew/ Arabic. The company’s mission is “to restore the unseen beauty of the broken”. It goes beyond just restoring broken architectural pieces and spans to include repairing the broken livelihoods of the vulnerable and marginalized in Lebanon. “Our model is built around the concept of beauty from brokenness. Many things have been broken in Lebanon; not just the heritage, but the environment, relationships and families. It was therefore only natural that our model be based on including people who are marginalized, disabled, broken in their dignity, body or circumstance,” explains Benedicte. From creating a piece to putting the final touches on the products, Beyt by 2b design strives to include those who have limited employment opportunities either because of a physical or financial disability in all of the production processes. In the shop located in Jeitawi, there are two Lebanese women who are now considered the patina experts. This work includes the cleaning the iron, painting of the iron pieces and sewing lamp shades.

CULTURE CLASH Among the patina workers at the atelier is Rania. At 32 years old, she was recruited by Benedicte to join the small team of patina workers. Before getting married, she did a lot of odd jobs such as cashiering and being a security guard. She started to work at 2b design six years ago when her father who worked at Arc En Ciel introduced her to Benedicte. At the time, her husband had an accident and could no longer work. As the sole bread winner, Rania was left to financially take care of her family. “I am grateful that Benedicte was kind enough to give me the opportunity to work for her. I didn’t really have any employment options. After about a year, I was capable of cleaning the iron and was able to mix and paint patinas,” said Rania. “I like the creative freedom that comes with the job.” Across town, next to Souk Al Had, a group of skilled iron workers make the latest creations designed by Benedicte herself. 2b design partnered with the one of the largest NGO’s in Lebanon, Arc en Ciel, to create the iron designs. They produce wheelchairs and have the appropriate equipment to make such things. Arc en Ciel employs individuals with disabilities from all different socioeconomic and religious backgrounds. Among the workers whose job is to just make the wheel chairs and walkers, is a small group of around five motivated men who are trained blacksmiths with the additional job to produce pieces for 2b design. In the back of the shop, these men are hammering, cutting, constructing and welding various iron pieces with skilled hands and positive attitudes. From just a scratch at the surface, one can’t help but feeling the sense of camaraderie among the group. 48- year-old, Omar Fawal is the head blacksmith at Arc En Ciel. He uses his contagious energetic spirit to lift the morale of the other iron workers despite how he is feeling on a particular day. While giving a tour of the workspace, Omar shares a story of tragedy and strength. It was in 1984 during an intense battle and during a post switch that his life altered forever. Shrapnel from a bomb hit his spinal cord. He left the emergency room as a paraplegic in a wheel chair. He performed a variety of odd jobs with each a specific purpose, but it wasn’t until he came to Arc en Ciel ten years ago and started to produce pieces for Benedicte, that he felt he is in the right place.
ARC EN CIEL EMPLOYS INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES FROM ALL DIFFERENT SOCIOECONOMIC AND RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS “The work we are doing is meaningful because we are producing something that will improve the life of someone. When making wheelchairs, we know this is going to someone who is also in our situation. When we make 2b design products, we know that we are keeping the Lebanese heritage alive,” said Omar.
For the rest of the blacksmiths, each one brings a special skill, story, and vibe to the workplace. Michel is one of the blacksmiths who also had some bumps in the road along his journey before coming to Arc en Ciel. When he was just a couple months old, his father couldn’t wake him up, so his father threw ice cold water on him. Since then, Michel

has had motor problems, most likely having a form of cerebral palsy. Society labeled him as defective, but Michel wanted to earn a living like everyone else. He got a job as a goldsmith and a satellite installer, but the salary was low so he quit. It wasn’t until he found his way to the doors of Arc En Ciel that he felt at home and his skills and intelligence were valued over is appearance. “I like Omar and the rest of the people I work with. It’s a family. We eat, drink, laugh and work together. I’m understood,” said Michel. The business has several lines that they focus their work on: wrought iron line, wood line, tile and copper line, a cushion and lampshade line and the European line. 2b design’s sale success has been mostly from foreigners or by Lebanese who lived abroad. Katia Boueri, who is the operations manager at the Beirut storefront, also mentions the lack of appreciation for the heritage pieces by the Lebanese.
2B DESIGN’S SALE SUCCESS HAS BEEN MOSTLY FROM FOREIGNERS OR BY LEBANESE WHO LIVED ABROAD “I think the Lebanese have other worries in their day to day life. If you tell them an 18th, 19th or 20th century house is being destroyed, they are going to respond by saying, ‘well I barely have electricity and water for my family,” explains Boueri. “So we understand.” But beyond the financial definition of success and the small support in Lebanon, Benedicte believes there is success in providing the alternative business model of a social enterprise as a career path to the younger generation and surrounding communities. While 2b design’s interest from the Lebanese is growing slowly, she says the 2b design is bridging the gap between communities in Lebanon and consumers abroad. Benedicte explains foreigners have misconceptions about the region and country, particularly when they learn the pieces they are admiring are from ‘war torn’ Lebanon.

“We allow westerners, particularly Americans to appreciate the beauty of the Levant through our products and our story. Perceptions change, misconceptions evolve and prejudices start crumbling”, said Benedicte. There is never a project or business that doesn’t come without its set of challenges. Benedicte says that that some of the challenges they face root from the nature of their business model. From the supply chain perspective, they have to visit different areas of the country in search of architectural salvage. Because of security concerns and regional tensions, some areas become inaccessible; this limits the ability to find raw materials. Aside from the challenges of having a social enterprise business model in a country with little support from the government and initiatives to preserve the architectural heritage that encompasses the quaint streets of Beirut and villages, the impact that Beyt 2b design has made in the lives of individuals with disabilities and those from marginalized communities is where the real success lies. “The stories of our team: Omar, Michel, Nada, Rania and others are conveyed to our customers through the work they do. Our workers are not faceless marginalized or disabled people who are perceived as being hostile that live in a far way land,” Benedicte stresses. “They’re human beings who have become world class artisans and who create unique pieces which will bring beauty to the homes of our customers.”

Love is when you’re emotionally intimate with someone and Sex is when it’s just physical, right? Well that’s definitely the very basic definition of the two terms that we so often hear about. However, while the terms appear to be very different they proposes various questions such as; don’t we need to be somewhat emotionally involved with a person to be able to have sex with them? And let’s just say there is no emotional attachment before performing the act of sex, does it later create an emotional bond with that person, and eventually disguising the bond as love if the people involved continue to practice casual sex?
DON’T WE NEED TO BE SOMEWHAT EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED WITH A PERSON TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SEX WITH THEM? Now more than ever before we are increasingly being exposed to topics of sexual actions whether they be emotionally more intimate or just casually. Pop culture has immensely influenced this shift where sex is portrayed and discussed openly and freely, well at least in Western countries. Think about it, you can’t watch a music video without it having some sort of sexual connotation, and these days even the lyrics are heavily based on the topic. It’s almost impossible to watch a movie without a sex scene, and some are even irrelevant to the story but it get’s people interested. Sex tapes that have supposedly been “leaked” to the public have made people rich and famous like Kim Kardashian and many other celebrities, which has also influenced pop culture. However, all of these avenues would be limited without the encouragement and flow of such content on social media sites. And let’s not forget the rise of the dating sites, which is all about meeting people and discovering your ‘soul mate’, where people are often signing up for a casual fling.

Well it’s one way to think of it, but people use to behave, talk, dress and eat more conservatively, so if things have always been so casual when it came to sex, they were definitely doing it behind closed doors. In the Middle East, people are reluctant to discuss sex openly and in many Arabian countries it is still considered publically taboo, but what happens behind closed doors remains behind closed doors. In Lebanon we are seeing it more in our pop culture and people are gradually opening up to the discussion about sex. Young people and those in tuned with technology have played a huge part in this; especially since everything has gone digital and American pop culture is available to them at just the click of a button.
An article written by social researcher Zhana Vrangalova tilted ‘Strictly Casual’ states, “The heavy presence of casual sex in popular culture creates a sense of a pervasive new hookup culture unique to the current generation of young adults”. In her article Zhana analyses the Journal of Sex Research, which suggests the possibility of a shift toward casual sex in the past 25 years.

However it shows that people are more likely to have sex with a friend rather than an acquaintance. So more like a Friends-With-Benefits or No Strings Attached scenario. So with the increased awareness and discussions about love and sex, comes the growing number of organisations and websites that aim to educate people further about these issues. Iwannaknow.org is a website affiliated with the American Sexual Health Association, and it classifies love as an emotional state and sex in a more physical one. “Love is an emotion or a feeling. Sex, on the other hand, is a biological event.” While it seems natural to experience whatever it is we desire whether it be making love or having sex. Living in the Middle East does not give women the chance to explore or experience freely. Even if it is behind closed doors. While
a large proportion of people in the Middle East are usually sexually active before they get married, it is widely unaccepted which explains why women are increasingly resorting to getting a hymenoplasty for their wedding night. In an article in Middle East Online, Kaouther Larbi states that social pressures are forcing women to fake their virginity. For example in Tunisia, “Fearing rejection as “used” women in a conservative country where premarital sex is nevertheless common”, sees an influx of women get the surgery done.

Maybe it is because it’s looked down upon to engage and even discuss sex that so many women are subject to harassment and are made to feel “used” and worthless if they choose to engage in sexual activities. Furthermore, because there is a social stigma around the issue, and a lack of exchange in dialogue between males and females, that women are seen as sexual products, where you are either a virgin or promiscuous. In an article titled Why do they hate us? by Mona Eltahawhy she explains that the Middle East has high sexual harassment cases which have increased because of the region’s falling economies, leaving men unable to marry.
THERE SEEMS TO BE NO DEMOCRACY OR JUSTICE WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH WOMEN AND THEIR ISSUES
This excuse is contradictory on many levels, especially because the falling economies have corresponded with the Arab Spring where essentially Arabs are fighting for a revolution in their respective governments to achieve democracy. However, there seems to be no democracy or justice when it comes to dealing with women and their issues. But the Arab Spring’s got one thing right; in order to achieve reform, there needs to be change in all aspects of society, new ideologies need to be produced, women need to be included in all decision-making roles in society, and most importantly people need to be educated about social issues where no topic is subject to stigma and people are encouraged to express themselves in any way they choose too.

A TRIP AROUND LEBANON THROUGH THE LENS OF LG G3
LG Electronics organized an exploration trip for 10 social media influencers around Lebanon which included Lebanese bloggers covering the technology, food and lifestyle sectors. The trip was held on the 27th and 28th of September and included different stops around Lebanon full of fun and adventure. The aim of the trip was to introduce the bloggers to the newly released Smartphone the LG G3. The hashtag used for the trip was #MeetLGG3, which bloggers used across different social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) to blog their experience throughout the 48-hour trip. Lebanese people are known for having large families, mainly because our relatives circle extends way beyond our aunties and uncles and surpasses the my grandmother and your grandmother connection, we are not content until our entire village is considered family. Having been born and raised outside of Lebanon, I always find that I am quite in tuned with the Lebanese society here, and that I can thank my parents for that. And while I can’t deny that I am obsessed with Lebanon and all of its natural beauty and lively atmosphere, hence the reason for the relocation - there is one thing I just can’t come to terms with… Those unbearably frustrating questions that get thrust upon you, filling your body with uneasiness because you don’t want to answer, they make you extremely uncomfortable because you feel as though someone has just entered your ‘personal bubble’ and what’s worse there’s just no escaping them at family gatherings or occasions. Lebanese people have an obsession with wanting to know every single detail about you and feel that they have every right to your personal life. Maybe because as your family or relatives they feel as they have a right to know how much you weigh? The amount of your salary? If you’re in a relationship with someone? Why you are not married yet? Why are you not having more babies? Why are you not living at home? Because they are family there should be no regard for boundaries or social etiquette.

Don’t forget “mit shab byetmana 3layki”. Just a word of caution: If you have found ‘the one’ keep it to yourself until the both of you are absolutely sure you want to go to the next step. Otherwise, those famous Lebanese assumptions of “Leh Bena Shi” or “Akeed Mesh Eben 3ayle” will make you believe “iza houweh bedo yekeh leh ba3ed ma 2ija t3araf 3a 2ahlik w talabik”.
WEL SHEGHEL KIFO? So you overcome all those hurdles and you are chatting away with a cousin, who is enthusiastically asking about your job or life in the “BIG” city, before preparing themselves with all that small talk for the question they’re actually interested in. Ta2riban 2edde ma3ashik? At this point you cringe not only because someone thought they had the right to know that sort of information, but also at the thought of actually disclosing the figures, because if you don’t they’re just going to assume it’s not enough or you’re too embarrassed to reveal it, this is usually followed by the phrase ‘el sheghel mesh 3eb’.

And while it can throw us off a little when put on the spot and asked these personal questions, just remember your family usually means well. And there’s no better time to start brainstorming … brace yourself, the festive season is just around the corner, which means more family fun. Or you can just mentally prepare yourself for the interrogation sessions, because some things will never change, and well … hayda lebnen ya 3ayneh.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but when it comes to “emotionally unavailable” people and dating them, the bottom line is: don’t. Here’s what you can do though if your emotional gestures are not being reciprocated, if your partner seems stunted in the EQ department or if you feel like getting affection from them is harder than getting blood from a stone.
BE REALISTIC Many women would not hesitate to cut from their lives someone who didn’t measure up in crucial ways. We all have our deal-breakers. But somehow, not expressing affection and being emotionally immature are seen as exceptions. Think about it: would you manage with someone who was physically unavailable? Intellectually unavailable? What about legally unavailable? While people can see what a bad idea it is to become romantically involved with someone who is in another country, very much less intelligent than they are or, to put it bluntly, married, the same is not true with emotional unavailability. But practically speaking, being emotionally unavailable is not much different. The key word is “unavailable”. Be realistic with yourself whatever the reason, if someone is not available to you, then they are not available. Period.

AVOID MAKING EXCUSES ON THEIR BEHALF Did you read the previous paragraph and have a knee-jerk reaction to defend your partner? Did you have an internal argument, something along the lines of, “well that’s true, but he’s different. He’s been hurt in the past. It isn’t his fault. He’s been through so much. He was raised that way. He does care about me, it’s just complicated right now... “? You may be making excuses to explain away your partner’s negligent behaviour. While you may see it as compassionate and understanding, what you may be doing is enabling and condoning a behaviour you don’t ultimately agree with. Unfortunately, many cultures have the image of a woman “saving” a man emotionally - how many movies show a dry, cynical hero totally falling in love with a charming and childlike women? Although he’s ambivalent, instead of moving on to a more emotionally available man, she stays to teach him how to feel, and of course, to love her back. It’s naive to think that a woman can draw an emotionally reluctant man out of his shell, that she can convince him to open up to her with love alone and sheer willpower. If you are justifying your partner’s behaviour, ask yourself why. Perhaps, even though you can’t stand how distant he is, you are unconsciously buying
into the role where you coax some affection out of him. Women who tolerate emotional coldness from their partners may be trying to undo that pattern from their childhoods without understanding why, they are drawn to “difficult” men and the promise that they could finally earn their love.

TAKE AN HONEST LOOK AT THE RELATIONSHIP
attempting to do your partner’s emotional work. While they may have a legitimate issue with affection or commitment, it’s ultimately something that they need to figure out for themselves. Is your partner also searching online for information about how to be more emotionally available to you? When you are able to realistically appraise your relationship as well as be assertive enough in what you need to be happy in one, you may decide to move on or you may not. Ultimately, keep in mind that a healthy relationship is balanced - where feelings aren’t reciprocated, resentment will eventually build.
Do an honest appraisal of the amount of affection and openness you currently share with your partner, and how it compares to what you need. Resist “counting” affection that isn’t actually real - i.e. don’t fool yourself into thinking that love that isn’t expressed counts. If you feel like there is a well of unexpressed love and affection hidden in your partner, but he is too afraid/stressed/ confused to let it out, be careful. At the end of the day, what counts is actual behaviour. It doesn’t matter what your partner is promising in the future, or what they say they intend but cannot actually deliver - what only matters is their actual behaviour, right now. It may be that things will change, that you’ll win their hearts, that everything will be OK. It could also be that you lose them anyway and will have to look back and wonder how you stayed in a situation where, realistically speaking, you were doing all the legwork. It is not only one person’s responsibility to do all the emotional work in a relationship. In fact, if you have found this article, you may have landed here because you were

There is a platitude that is difficult to avoid whenever a discussion about Lebanese emigration is evoked. Emigration is always unfortunate but sometimes necessary. This has been repeated and drained into the Lebanese psyche since the earliest days of civics textbooks and high school essays. And yet, in spite of of our educational system’s emphasis on that doctrine, every year, the one way ticket airline bookings shoot right up after college graduations. Why do so many Lebanese choose to leave home? They leave because it is the right thing to do. A quick sweep of opinions show that many, if not most Lebanese living abroad, whether permanently, as immigrants, or temporarily, as expatriates, still believe they did the right thing by leaving. It is not difficult to see where they are coming from. In a study conducted in 2012-2013, The National Council for Scientific Research declared a 35 percent rate in youth unemployment in Lebanon. This alone should justify the decision of moving elsewhere for better employment opportunities and financial growth.
EMIGRATION IS ALWAYS UNFORTUNATE BUT SOMETIMES NECESSARY Amidst the crippled economy, there are a number of local companies and firms cutting down on employees due to a suffering business and tourism sector. The lower and middle classes find themselves terribly close to the line of fire. And while there might not be a fully-fledged war to provoke the mass emigrants of 1914, 1967 or 1973, the situation isn’t exactly sound. In fact, it might just be at its worst: From the East, a terrorist threat looms from behind the border, threatening to sweep over the nation and enforce its culture of war. From the North, a Syrian war that had barely just left us, is slipping back through the cracks of an insecure Lebanese identity, and from the South, a familiar enemy waiting for the right moment to sneak in and reignite the horrors it is exhibiting in Palestine.

Even within the borders, things look grim for many Lebanese: a failure to unify or communicate has plagued the country for decades, and within the streets and inside the privacy of Lebanese homes, problems of illiteracy, discrimination, and abuse flourish in the fertile environment of violence and instability. The West is the only direction that presents itself as a solution, and whether we like to admit it or not, many Lebanese look onto the Mediterranean and finds comfort in the hope that if worse comes to worst, there is always that one remaining compass

direction we could follow to safety. It seems like an exaggeration. There is no indication that those who remain are nobler than those who have left.

The reason for hanging on and fighting for a country is no different than the reason of holding on and fighting for an endangered loved one. It is love that makes the stakes worth the fight. And whether we distill our reasons in romanticized Lebanese metaphors of grapevines, of trips from the mountains to shore, of family members singing Fairouz over a drunken Sunday lunch, of number one nightclubs and musicians or of plain old Beirut traffic – the principal remains the same. We stay for love.
IT IS LOVE THAT MAKES THE STAKES WORTH THE FIGHT
Many of those who have immigrated did so because they had no other choice, much like the people who stay for the same reason. Leaving the country imposes its own set of financial, professional, and political restrictions. VISAs and job opportunities abroad are difficult to come by, and many of us are tied to family members or careers that we cannot afford to be severed from. Staying here is a decision that we seldom control. But there are also those who choose to stay. There are the ones who have had more than one opportunity to leave and yet chose to stay in Lebanon every time. And then there are those who come back. These people might just be the key to understanding this delicate dynamic between leaving and staying. There is an undeniable pride that comes from wearing the scars of a painful wound we have survived. However, to settle in another host country is to be nothing but a guest. Foreign countries can and have offered a lot: solace, opportunity, and hope.

But what keeps most of us grounded deeply in our country that seems on the verge of crumbling is something that cannot be measured in units of currency, years or GPA. Simply put, it is the privilege of being among people who share our scars, even if they had once been the ones to inflict the wound. It is the romantic flair in us that clings to notions of honor and chivalry and tradition, even when our heart throbs with modernity and freedom and exploration. Scars could lose much of their significance in a foreign land. “The love of our country” is the cliché reason at the tip of every person’s tongue when asked why they stayed or why they would come back, but clichés are nothing more than truths we have grown tired of hearing.

In fact, the giant bushy beards are the new black; they have literally grown in popularity. Recently, you can see them everywhere, on the streets, in the workplace, in coffee shops, on billboards, and incomparably, in war zones. Though reasons for growing a hipster beard varies between religious beliefs and outstanding fashion trends, the truth is more men are trading a clean shaved chin for full beards, they are simply setting themselves free from the agony of the razors.

For those who embrace beards as a fashion statement, it can be either a blessing or a curse. Some assert that having a beard isn’t the lazy option, while others admit it has made their life much easier. “The longer I grew my beard, the more time and money I am taking to clean and groom it”, says Hassan Fneich, who works in a general trade and industry company. Whilst, Adel Mattar, a salesman, confirms “Having a beard freed me from the hassle and pain of daily shavings, especially that I have a sensitive skin”. Mostafa berri, a barber for 10 years, affirms that the number of clients coming in with hipster beards has tripled in recent months.

“Neat short beards were the dominant trend, but now a lot of clients are going to the extreme with their full long beards, just like ottoman sultans”, he adds with a smile. “Beards definitely give a more masculine look. It is a truth widely acknowledged that young men tend to grow beards in order to look older, more significant and of higher status”. As a matter of fact, several rulers including King Henry VIII and Peter the Great, enforced a “beard tax”, making it exclusive to people of affluence and social status. Even the ancient Greeks regarded beards as a sign of virility and power. Unfortunately, not all men are lucky enough to have complete facial hair. Hence, many are opting for beard transplants to go with the flow. Some men only need hair transplants on small patches on their faces where hair won’t grow, but others are ought to spend a fortune. But is it worth it, and most importantly; what do women think of this new hairy trend?
UNFORTUNATELY, NOT ALL MEN ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE COMPLETE FACIAL HAIR Some women don’t mind a beard as long as it’s well kept, and actually looks good on their partner, but recent scientific studies showed that most women hate beards and preferred clean -shaven men. To them, bearded men seem to be more aggressive and less romantic. In addition to that, they think that beards are scratchy and might smell sometimes. Other significant study stated that women hate beards because it makes their men the center of attention, since guys are fond of one another’s beards. Some of the cool type colors are: blue, icy pink, deep purple black, silver etc.., whereas, some of the warm type colors are brown, yellow, olive, orange, yellow gold etc..

THE EFFECTS OF COLORS ON US Picking the right colors, in clothing, makeup or hair dye, will definitely leave a direct impact on us. Haven’t you ever heard a nice compliment when you were simply wearing a white t-shirt, while on the contrary you haven’t received any, even if you’ve done your best to look good? That is simply because white color made you look younger, fresh and gorgeous. Whereas, a fancy dress sometimes could make you look ill simply because the color does not suit you, and u feel the urge to wear more makeup to look healthier. The right color can even lift your face, eyes, and define your jaw line. I’ve seen makeup artists doing the biggest mistake by applying warm colors to cool skins which will lead to tired eyes and washed out look.
YOUR PERSONAL COLORS WILL SAVE TIME AND MONEY Most women wear only 20 % of their wardrobe 80% of the time, for they buy things only because they liked it on someone else, or it is the latest trend, but it might not suit their style or colors. How many times we heard the sales person telling us “you are blonde, red suits you” or “you are brunette this color matches your skin”, well this is totally wrong. For example, everybody can wear red, since red has different shades, ex. tomato warm red is for deep autumn, while watermelon red is for spring.
SEASON CHANGES DEPENDING ON COLORS Your season won’t change if you dye your hair, or wear colored contact lenses, but make sure not to choose the wrong colors that will make you look pale, older and tired.
SOME WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON A COLOR IF THEY LOVE IT EVEN IF IT’S NOT ON THEIR COLOR PALETTE; ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO WEAR A COLOR OUTSIDE THEIR OWN PALETTE? Many of my clients insisted on wearing a specific color before undergoing a color analysis, but were very surprised when they saw the bad effects it leaves on their faces (jaw line dropping, emphasized wrinkles and dark circles around their eyes), that they changed their mind. But, they can always wear colors they love even if it is not in their palette, on the B zone, which is the waist and lower. The A zone, which is the upper body part, should always be colored from within your personal palette. If you have a lovable dress which is not from your color palette, I advise you to add accessories from your palette close to your face like a statement necklace, a scarf, or a blazer. You can always wear colors not from your palette as hand bags or shoes especially if a color is a must have for this season.

Knowing your personal palette and having it with you will make you buy the right color without even trying it and it will be amazing on you every time. Shopping will become easier and most importantly you will be having the right combination of colors in your wardrobe to mix and match without being hesitant. One of the biggest trends in technology right now is wearable technology. But many people seem confused about what wearable technology is and what it can do. Put simply, wearable technology is worn on you, as opposed to being a separate device. Examples might include smart watches which can operate simple apps or fitness trackers that can record vital health statistics. Wearable technology can provide some big benefits over existing technology, because you frequently don’t have to manually use it - it does its job quietly in the background. Many companies are working on wearable technology at the moment and it’s expected that the number of these types of devices is going to increase enormously. This market is likely to be very important in the future.

One example of wearable technology that h§as been released already is the Microsoft Band. This is primarily a fitness tracker, in that it records data about you as you wear it. The band incorporates over 10 sensors covering such statistics as your heart rate, your location and even a sunlight sensor. Microsoft’s device then connects with an app which can give you advice about how to live a healthier lifestyle, based on the information it has gathered. The band also features simple applications which can give you information about the weather, for example. Currently only available for the US, it costs $199.
THE BAND INCORPORATES OVER 10 SENSORS COVERING SUCH STATISTICS AS YOUR HEART RATE, YOUR LOCATION AND EVEN A SUNLIGHT SENSOR
Other, perhaps more specific, devices than Google Glass exist. One notable example is Cuff Smart Jewellery, which is worn like regular jewelry but offers certain special features. The device buzzes to indicate phone notifications and is able to issue a safety alert to family members by pressing a button. These devices are not yet publicly available, but are available for pre-ordering. This is typical of wearable technology because the market for it is so new.
THIS IS TYPICAL OF WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY BECAUSE THE MARKET FOR IT IS SO NEW But the Microsoft Band isn’t the only wearable technology currently available. Google Glass is another much-publicized device. This is a type of head-mounted technology, which can provide information hands-free by displaying in front of your eyes. You can communicate with the device through speech, and it offers multiple functions like taking pictures, giving directions and recording videos. Although Google has been praised for developing such an innovative product, it’s also been criticized for its privacy implications, being able to silently take pictures and record video.
Another device that hasn’t yet been released is the much-anticipated Apple Watch. This device has been developed by Apple and will be offered from $349. It is primarily a smart watch, in that it can tell the time and offers simple applications to perform tasks such as displaying text messages from your phone. Most notably, the Apple Watch is being offered in many editions, including a sports edition and a fashion edition, which features a gold-plated exterior.
All of these devices highlight the growing importance of the wearable technologies market and the advantages and also potential problems they bring. Undoubtedly, this is an important area to keep looking at, because we don’t yet know how important it will be.

NEW + NOW ABU DHABI VOLVO OCEAN RACE STOPOVER CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS As preparations ramp up for Abu Dhabi’s December/January Volvo Ocean Race Stopover and the yachts battle it out for glory from Spain to the Emirates via Cape Town, more than 200 volunteers are being recruited to help deliver the UAE capital’s 23-day watersports, entertainment and cultural event. Volunteer roles exist both on and off the water at the purpose-built Destination Village on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche Breakwater, which is expected to attract 200,000 visitors between 12th December and 3rd January. Jobs range from overseeing many of the Destination Village’s top attractions, to serving as accreditation officers and information ambassadors, or assisting with race operations. Beyond contributing to Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a year-round international visitor destination and regional water sports hub, volunteers will be able to meet new people and learn fresh skills. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, speak English and/or Arabic fluently and be able to commit to at least two pre-event orientation/training sessions between 29th November and 6th December and three event days between 12th December and 3rd January. DIY FACIAL PEEL During the cold days of winter, skin tends to look dull and pale. This mask helps control oil and tightens the skin. Mix two egg whites, a tablespoon of lemon juice, and a quarter cup of tomato puree together in a bowl. Apply the mixture to your face leaving it on for five to 10 minutes. Last, rinse off with cool water. Why this works: The peeling is from the lemon juice and tomato that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) that naturally exfoliate skin. The egg white temporarily tightens skin for a firmer look.
DIY ASPIRIN AND LEMON JUICE PEEL
DIY BAKING SODA AND LEMON JUICE SKIN BRIGHTENING PEEL
This popular DIY peel is for those who want deeper peel action as it acts like a chemical peel. Crush 12 non-coated aspirin with a spoon, combine aspirin with lemon juice, and allow it to form into a paste for five to 10 minutes. Smooth onto skin and let sit for 10 minutes. Dissolve a tablespoon of baking soda into a cup of water. Soak a cotton ball into the baking soda solution and wipe the mask off.
If your skin is beginning to look a little dull this mask might be your answer. The power of lemon juice and baking soda come together to give you brighter skin. Simply mix baking soda with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a few drops of oil. Form it into a paste and apply to freshly cleansed skin. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse off.
Why this works: The salicylic acid in aspirin is a beta hydoxy or BHA, which is used in chemical peels to help treat acne. Lemon juice is an AHA that also acts as an exfoliant. The baking soda neutralizes the acid.
Why this works: The lemon juice naturally exfoliates. The baking soda helps to neutralize the acid in the juice and helps to brighten the skin. The olive oil provides moisture so the skin does not dry out.
DIY WINTER FACIAL PEEL During the winter, skin tends to be on the dry side and this peel brightens the complexion without drying your skin out. Take a cup of plain yogurt, two tablespoons of brewed green tea, one pink grapefruit wedge, and two lime wedges and mix them together into a smooth cream. Apply the cream to face and neck avoiding eye and lip area. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with cool water. Why this works: Grapefruit and lime are high in AHA’s from the citrus acid. The yogurt is soothing to the skin and contains another AHA, lactic acid. Green tea is used to soother skin.

These four DIY facial peels are very easy to make. Please be aware that AHA and BHAs make the skin sensitive to the sun. So do not apply these facials if you plan on going outside in the sun within the next 12 hours. Make sure you use sunscreen always to protect the skin from the sun.

I recently took a short vacation to Kerala, India. Its home to lush greenery, an equable climate and the oldest medicine in the world: Ayurveda. It was a short, but relaxing vacation; making it the ultimate getaway escape. Chanting music, aromatic candles and the smell of herbal oil pleased every sense of my body. My trip to Kerala wasn’t a physical one, but a mental one, even though you wouldn’t know the difference. The Ayurvedic oils, techniques and the therapist and yoga instructor, Binu K.K. are directly from Kerala, India; bringing this ancient medicine to the land of Cedars. The spa is located at Vanda Hotel and Spa in Jounieh. If you’re not familiar with Ayruveda, this medicine and way of life dates back to 5,000 years. It’s a naturalistic system that depends on your body’s humours -vata, pitta and kapha- to achieve the right balance. The Ayurvedic massage is personalized to suit the individual dosha (body and mind type). As a dedicated runner and recent student of mixed martial arts, my body has naturally taken a beating. Aside from the physical soreness that creeps throughout my legs and back, my mind is cloudy with deadlines, projects, commitments and day to day stresses; which most of us go through on a regular basis. Binu recommended the stress management package which includes: a soothing massage for 25 minutes, the Sirodhara (general head massage) and the Njavarakizhi, finished by a steam bath and sauna. A TRIP TO KERALA, INDIA | AYURVEDIC SPA
NJAVARAKIZHI A light chanting music of stringed instruments plays softly overhead while the therapist slowly drips warm therapeutic oil across my back and legs. This technique starts off with a short massage so the oil can integrate into your skin. Then, a linen cloth bundle filled with boiled rice and medicinal herbs are applied to my skin in circular motions. The sudden heat and smell from the cloth awakened my muscles and the circular motions and contact with the oil created a sedation process that took me into the most relaxing state. Since I run, my calf muscles were tight, but after the therapist applied the heated cloth bundles, my mucsles began to loosen up. I felt like I was in an ancient Ashram located in northern India. Overall, this technique is great for someone who likes thermal contact and a circular motion massage.
SIRODHARA I was on to my second massage: a head massage. My body was already very relaxed after receiving the Njavarakizhi treatment. This technique is when lukewarm oil is poured in a special rhythmic style on the forehead. Oil is dripped from side to side on the forehead and then back through my hair. It rejuvenated the nerves and scalp which increases blood circulation of the head and brain. The motion of the oil is slow enough that every sensation on my head awoke. When I have writers block, and that is frequent, I come to get this massage because it allows me focus and quiet the noise that seems to never stop in my brain. This technique provides a better vision, better hearing and overall eases mental stress. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t battle the stress of day to day life, so why not get a massage to ease calm down your brain.
STEAM BATH, SAUNA AND TURKISH BATH After having oil applied to my skin, it was time to unclogged the pores and sweat out any toxins I’ve accumulated from my errands of the day. I tried each one to get a feel for which ‘post massage’ cleanse I liked better. My favorites were the sauna and the steam bath. For one, the sauna gives you a full body sweat detox. I liked the steam bath for different reasons. The steam bath allows you to sweat out your toxins, but your head is out in the air. This leaves a chamber around your body which lets steam stay in a confined area. This is an effective treatment for ridding of cellulite ladies and gentlemen! After two different massages, a steam bath and sauna, my body was thanking me for the much needed dedicated relaxation time. Aside from Indian oils, the center uses handmade oils and soaps from one of Lebanon’s oldest soap producers, Khan al Saboun in Tripoli. Ayurvedic is just more than massage; it’s a medicine that follows the makeup of your body. When you get the massage, tell Binu where your ache is and he will focus on treating the area with a certain technique. I took a mental trip to the land of peace and relaxation and now my body and mina are ready for the tasks ahead! I’m already preparing for my next trip.

TO DEAL WITH ANGER PASS ON THE IMPORTANT TOOLS BY COLLEEN McMAHON
Anger is one of the most powerful emotions humans experience. It can make us feel helpless in its grip, or stronger than we thought possible. It can be scary to feel so out of control, filled with a desire to break things or hurt others. But it is also a normal part of life, even for the smallest children. As parents, raising healthy children means giving them the tools to recognize their emotions and channel their feelings in a constructive way. Because it can lead to such destructive impulses, it is especially important to help our kids learn to deal with anger appropriately. The first step in teaching good anger management skills to others is to take a look at ourselves.

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO DEAL WITH ANGER
DON’T DENY YOUR FEELINGS Because anger can be frightening, it is tempting to give in to the impulse to squash it down and deny it. As a child, your own parents may have trained you to do this, in the guise of politeness or proper upbringing. But denying and hiding emotions is not healthy. They do not go away, and trying to lock them up only means that they will leak out in other ways that can be self-destructive and dangerous. If you are an adult who has never learned to accept and channel your own angry feelings, you will need to do some inner work of your own in order to help your child learn to cope with his emotions. Recognize unhealthy emotional habits you have been taught or acquired on your own, and make a conscious decision not to pass those on to your child.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE At the same time, you need to show your child that anger does not have to cause a loss of control. Do you have bad anger management habits of your own, such as shouting, cursing, or lashing out when you get angry? Remember that our kids learn most of all by watching us. Be conscious of the example you are setting, and work on finding healthy ways to channel your anger. Tell those around you that you are feeling angry, and let them know what you need, whether it is to talk things through, or be alone. If you have to find a physical outlet for your angry energy, take a walk or bike ride, or tackle a vigorous household chore like mowing the lawn or vacuuming the floors.
YOU NEED TO SHOW YOUR CHILD THAT ANGER DOES NOT HAVE TO CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL
ENCOURAGE COMMUNICATION DEAL WITH ANGER CREATIVELY When you see your child is feeling angry, ask her to talk about her feelings. Why is she angry? How does it feel? What would make her feel better? Sometimes the reason can be something so minor or silly that just talking about it is enough to give her perspective and dissolve the intensity of her emotion. If she feels that she has a genuine reason to be angry, talking it through can help her move past the grip of the strong emotion and begin to look for a resolution to the underlying problem.
For older children, a journal where they can draw or write about their feelings can provide a vital outlet for anger as well as other strong feelings. Encourage your child to write about the feeling itself or the causes for it. Other possibilities are drawing, making a collage, composing poems or songs or writing letters to the person or thing she is angry with. Any of these activities take the negative energy and channel it into a creative endeavor. Your child has a way to both vent feelings, and potentially work through to insights or solutions to the issue behind the emotion.
FIND ACCEPTABLE OUTLETS
TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO BE EMOTIONALLY RESILIENT
Just as you need to “let off steam” when you are angry, help your child recognize this need in himself, and to find ways to do this constructively, or at least harmlessly. If he wants to hit or throw something, offer him a pillow, Play Doh, or a squishy “stress toy” to pound on. Let him run around the house or yard for a few laps. Make up an “anger song” about angry feelings, and encourage him to sing it while marching or jumping up and down. Sometimes venting the negative energy is enough to make the angry feelings manageable, or even dissipate them.

One of our most important jobs as parents is to teach our children to be emotionally resilient, to channel and examine their feelings rather than suppress or blindly act on them. It is tempting to discourage or even give in to expressions of anger, but for our children to grow into healthy adults, they need to have a variety of tools at hand to express and cope with emotions. It is our job to provide those tools and teach our kids how to use them.

COUNTER THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS Being exposed to verbal abuse can lead to feelings of inferiority. If someone at work is the one dishing out the abuse, you really have no way of escaping that person besides quitting your job. Fortunately, there are many different ways to protect yourself from feeling inferior. Follow RAGMAG’s step by step pointers to a stronger you.

One of the most important ways to protect yourself from feeling inferior is to counter your negative thoughts with positive ones. For instance, if you think “I am too weak to do this” stop yourself and think a more positive thought like “I am a strong person. I am certainly strong enough to do this.” Some people also like to provide a reason with the positive thought, such as “I am a strong person because in the past I healed from the heartbreak of my first love.” You can word it in any way that feels best to you, as long as it is a positive constructive thought. Use this same technique every time another person says something negative to you. For example, if your boss asks you why you are so stupid, then think “I am not stupid just because I made a mistake. I am a smart person who accepts people sometimes make mistakes. Because I plan on learning from these mistakes, I am a smart person.” This method is a powerful way of defending yourself against the negativity, abuse, and unfounded criticism from others.

HOW TO STOP FEELING INFERIOR
UNDERSTAND THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY HAVE HIDDEN AGENDAS Another piece of knowledge that may make it easier for you to squash feelings of inferiority in their tracks is to understand that some people may have hidden agendas. That person at work who tends to make you feel inferior might intentionally intimidate you because he/she is after a promotion. Additionally, that type of person will also try to keep you as uninformed as possible for his/ her own benefit. By seeing his/her tactics for what they are, it will be easier for you to stop feeling inferior around him/her.
RECOGNIZE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM One thing you do want to listen to and take into consideration is constructive criticism, which will never be worded in an abusive manner. Calling people names or stupid does not count as constructive criticism. For someone who has already started to feel inferior, even constructive criticism can make them feel down. Learn how to notice what really is constructive criticism and be accepting of it. Don’t allow it to make you think negatively about yourself. It’s only intended to help you improve, and everyone can always do something to improve. Therefore, there’s no reason to view improving as a negative thing.

In conclusion, it is possible to stop feeling inferior and protect yourself from feelings of inferiority, whether they stem from outside sources or not. It’s easy to feel helpless if you have someone stuck in your life who makes you feel inferior, but you can protect yourself from him/her by turning every negative thing he/she says to you into a positive encouraging thought. Additionally, being able to recognize constructive criticism and understand that some people may have hidden agendas will help you overcome feelings of inferiority.

You deserve good love, with someone who is in 100 percent. By hanging onto your illusion, you’ve been stopping yourself finding it. You did not mention if this is something that is new in your life or it’s been going on for a while now. Guilt is a social function. We chose ways to behave sometimes even if it is to our expense so that we are accepted and feel good about ourselves. What you have described is inappropriate guilt, and that comes from an unhealthy childhood belief where you have been made to feel unimportant, which is the ritual in our society and it is because of our upbringing. You have to start thinking of yourself differently, and start to stop these guilt feelings that you may have. Always remember “no one is perfect” therefore you don’t have to be. It is time to take ownership of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Alternatively, you can seek professional help.

boyfriend, Josh. It has all the right ingredients for being a good book that takes you back in time. I had a lot of fun in the beginning, but after a few chapters it seemed like this story was really all over the place. The characters made no sense to me whatsoever and as for the ending. I had to read the last paragraph 3 times to see if I got it right the first time around. It was that abrupt. It gave me no closure and it left me quite a bit disappointed.

Lia meets the assassin and the prince and learns their names, or rather fake names, to be Rafe and Kaden. The really interesting part of this book is that we do not know which is the
prince and which is the assassin. I loved how we got to see the men the same way Lia did, not really knowing their true identities. It added a fun/mysterious extra layer to the book that always kept me guessing and trying to figure out who was who. If I were asked to sum this book up in one word it would be “beautiful”. If you like fantasy, romance, magic or just amazing stories then The Kiss of Deception is the book for you! I have read a lot of fantasy books in my days and this one blew me away. I DEVOURED this book. It was full of all the elements that I love in books; fantasy, magic and romance!
SPLIT SECONDS Kasie West Why you should read this book
If you’re a Pivot Point fan, then you have to
Split Second takes off right where Pivot Point left off. Except now, instead of alternating Para and Norm chapters, we have alternating Addie and Laila chapters. Kasie West masters at writing two engaging and distinct perspectives, and ending them with little cliffhangers such that you never want to stop reading. But something I really love about Split Second is that, because of the dual perspectives, we really get a feel for Laila’s character

and how truly damaged and complex she is. Moving on to other romances in Split Second, we have Addie and Trevor. What I love about their relationship is that Kasie West is essentially building it from the ground up again, yet it doesn’t feel boring or repetitive. With any other romance, written by any other author, it probably would have. But Kasie West has got this down, and she knows what she’s doing with this relationship, and she does it damn well.

Lady Antebellum 747 I’m not very familiar with Lady Antebellum beyond the album Need You Now, but I can say that this is much better produced. I mean, just listening to it, you can tell that 747 is not just a country album. It’s really very rich, like a buttercream frosting. And that’s what makes it work. It has a great blend of the country ballad, but that
guitar solo is pretty pure rock ‘n’ roll. Lady Antebellum have proved again and again that it’s capable of so much better. And this is a good thing. When you have stunning, personal lyrics and these glorious harmonies, why would you want to sing about partying down by the creek? It’s just a waste, really.
Sia 1000 FORMS OF FEAR There is no denying that Sia Furler is a masterful songwriter after wonderfully crafting pop songs such as “Diamonds” by Rihanna, “Wild Ones” by Flo Rida and “Perfume” by Britney Spears – and now she’s back. There’s pain in this album. I think that all of the stuff Sia has dealt with over the years comes through largely in this album, and in a strange way,
has influenced her to become the amazing song writer that she is. Her unique sounding voice add texture and beauty to her songs. These are all songs that she could have sold to the queens of pop but I guess they were too personal to give away. It is nice to hear a pop album that feels real. It is a must in your album collection, and you will not regret it.
Maroon 5 V Maroon 5 are nothing if not consistent. They have been able to maintain their solid track record of success, and live up to the formula of big songs. V is said to be equally big, bold and cinematic. The group ditched the emo pining for love and attached themselves to the burgeoning electronic revival that would morph into EDM movement. Their materials have
moved away from whiny love songs to arrogant love songs, maintaining a healthy level of self-indulgence led by front man Adam Levine. In my opinion V is a solid record. I liked most of the songs and couldn’t help but also be impressed by Levine’s vocals. I think the songs have great hooks and I can honestly say I am impressed.
Calvin Harris MOTION Calvin Harris has another No1 record, as reported by Dancing Astronaut. He has been on a winning streak lately, riding the swell of Motion’s success. He took home the best electronic artist honor at the MTV EMAs, despite being unable to perform due to a heart issue. His recent artist album Motion just hit No 1 on the dance/

electronic sales charts with 35,000 copies sold, sliding in ahead of Knife Party’s debut artist album Abandon Ship, which leaked three weeks early on ITunes. Harris’s chart domination does not stop at albums. He has also topped the Billboard hot dance/electronic songs chart with his single “Blame” alongside singer John Newman.

What makes Gone Girl intoxicating is the way the mystery unfolds. The movie is all about: How much did Nick know about his wife? Or better yet, is it asking the audience: How much do any of us know about our partners? Fincher’s film tells the nightmare story of Nick and Amy Dunne, a fairy-tale couple whose marriage has soured into a curdled stew of resentment, hostility, and possibly murder. On the morning of their fifth anniversary, Amy disappears from their suburban Missouri home,
leaving behind upturned furniture, shattered glass, and traces of blood. Nick, a self-absorbed bar owner who’s curiously unflustered by his wife’s absence, quickly becomes the police’s prime suspect. His alibi is hardly airtight; worse, Amy’s diary paints him as unfaithful and short-tempered. Is she dead or just simply...gone? I can’t guarantee that the film’s ending will work for everyone, but if you loved Gone Girl the book you will walk out with a grin on your face.

Dracula untold starts off with a lot of potential, great cinematography and interesting to say the least – but of course Hollywood had to turn it into a clichéd. It is the “untold” story of Vlad the Impaler becoming Dracula. Vlad is portrayed as a hero, loved by his people, with a past he was not proud of. He fights valiantly to defend his family and his people, doing whatever it takes to defeat insurmountable odds. The character was
morphed to be a lovable guy to appeal to audiences, instead of being dark and suspenseful. Putting aside the clear morphing, the movie clearly cuts some tones down to PG-13 rating. Despite Luke Evans’s dedication to the role and some intense dramatic moments, Dracula Untold is just a pop-corn flick with shaky action scenes and an uninteresting romance that takes itself too seriously.

117 Min | Drama, Thriller Bill Paxton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo Nightcrawler is all about the characters. Everyone delivers amazing performances with dialogue that felt real. You can sort of tell where the movie is going, but it takes a slight turn, and goes into a different direction - one that is not expected - and keeps you on the edge. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers the performance of a life time, as a creepy, unsettling character who dives into the world of news broadcasting, and goes into some dark places proves himself a very talented and promising actor once again.
He plays a sociopath bent on success, and he won’t let anything or anyone stand in his way. He brings through various personalities with tremendous ease, he goes from being utterly disturbing to hilarious to horrifying that you are kept wondering what is next. The story is great, cinematography beautiful, the editing is crisp and fast and a stellar cast throughout this thriller. I personally think this is his best role yet. This is a movie you have to see. Gyllenhaal should be guaranteed an Oscar Nomination.

The essential idea behind the movie is to realistically represent space travel and the space environment, which the movie succeeds in doing, if you consider the earth dying to “climate change”, aliens opening wormholes next to Saturn, surviving travel into black holes and performing time travel through 5-dimensional tesseracts to be realistic.

The production values of the film, though, on items such as uniforms, space gear, instruments, ships and stations is really outstanding. Space buffs will love the hardware. There are also detailed representations of the nuances of docking, orbital transfers and other astronautically cool stuff. Interstellar is simultaneously a big-budget science fiction endeavor and a very simple tale of love and sacrifice. It is by turn edgy, breathtaking, hopeful, and heartbreaking. I enjoyed Interstellar very much, though I think it is not a perfect film.

TAKE ME WITH YOU The beautiful city of Arachova is a popular, attractive and colourful resort destination while travelling Greece. One of the oldest Greek settlements that fully retains its traditional style, with two-storied stone-hewed houses and earthen red-clay brick roofs, Arachova is sprawled on the southern side of mount Parnassus, at an altitude of 900 - 1000 meters, and provides services for one of the biggest skiing resorts in the country.

Motto’s innovative approach is different than the other pop up diners in the area. Its approach of ‘ pay what you think is fair’ is the only concept of its kind to hit Beirut’s dining scene. Each day, Monday through Friday, customers can try a variety of ethnic cuisines such as Ethiopian, Sri Lankan, Indian, Italian and Greek foods by the natives themselves.

Investment banker turned food enthusiast and partner in Motto, Karim Ghazzi, went from selling stocks to promoting international cuisine. The founders Tony Sfeir and Mohammad Fayad share a similar story of a calling to the restaurant business. “ There is no proper Sri Lankan or Ethiopian restaurant in Lebanon, so here we want customers to try authentic cuisine at a price they think is fair. Most international cuisine here caters to the Lebanese palette, but here you get the real thing,” said Ghazi.

I decided to start my travel of the world one plate at a time; starting with a Sri Lankan dinner cooked by chef Nimal who has been in Lebanon since 1994. The staple dishes of Sri Lankan food are rice and curry so it came as no surprise that this eclectic cuisine, with a variety of flavors, was a fiery surprise to my Lebanese acquired palette. The dinner was a banquet of contrasting flavors: spicy, salty, sweet, savory and smoky. All of which kept me looking forward to trying the next dish.

It’s a hole in the wall kind of place situated in a city that is desperate for a place that feels and tastes like home. Sitting outside with a glass of chilled local white wine and a bouquet of flowers and tea candle that decorated the table, my friend and I were given fish cutlets for the appetizer. These balls of deliciousness were crispy on the outside and a melt in your mouth feeling once you dip them in the spicy chutney sauce. It truly is an explosion of flavor in your mouth.

Next we were on to the main courses of rice infused with bacon and shrimps, Brinjal Pahi (aubergine), Pork Curry, Orange and Date chutney, Carrot Curry and last but not least, the delectable Chocolate Cashew Nut slice. With each dish looking more and more inviting after the next, I tried each dish that was made with the authentic ingredients and real passion. The rice infused with savory bacon and tender shrimp gave this turmeric-spiced rice a kick of smokiness without being to strong. The pork curry was tender, yet mouthwatering wholesome, especially when paired with the bed of rice. One of my personal favorites was the orange and date chutney. It had the mix and balance of spicy and tangy notes with a chewy caramelized texture.
Coming in close second as my favorite was the carrot curry. I’m a sucker for anything curry so this was a real treat. The carrots provided a slightly sweet taste and the curry gave a counter piquant flavor. The Brinal Pahi was charbroiled into delectable savory pieces spiced with cumin, onions and curry leaves. A meal isn’t complete with out a desert. To end my trip to Sri Lanka, I had a rich and fluffy, chocolate cashew nut slice that tasted like Christmas morning. The sweet toasted coconut and cashews provided a crunchy texture and the cinnamon and nutmeg cake was spongy and moist. Perfect with a double espresso! Through the whole meal, the staff was very attentive, which is rarity in Beirut’s restaurant sector. The partner Karim and the chef Nimal asked everyone how their meal was and described the origins and the flavors inside each dish. When it came time to pay, the motto of ‘pay as you like’ gets to you psychologically because you start adding the estimated cost of a meal, how much you liked it and your comparison to a previous meal. Overall, this restaurant will become a frequent stop among my friends and I. The ‘slow eating’ and cozy atmosphere is perfect if you’re looking to challenge your tastes buds and travel the world one homemade dish at a time.

A meal doesn’t have to be fancy and elaborate to look and taste amazing. The simplest recipes executed in the right way make for food that is quite simply divine. AND OLIVES SALAD
PREPARATION TIME 45 MINUTES SERVES 4 LEVEL EASY
INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon honey • 175 grams couscous • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • Zest of one orange • Handful of dried cranberries • 5 dates, pitted and sliced • 5 dried apricots, sliced • Handful of pecans, toasted • 50 grams olives, pitted • ¼ bunch parsely, finely chopped
METHOD
• Boil about half a litre of water in a pot. Place honey in a jug over the boiling water and stir • Pour the honey into
a bowl with the couscous. Cover with cling film for about 20 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed • Fluff the couscous with a fork, cover again and leave aside for 10 minutes • Add in the cinnamon, orange zest, dried cranberries, dates, dried apricots, pecans, olives and parsely. Toss to combine • Serve with plain yogurt
PUMPKIN SOUP
PREPARATION TIME 30 MINUTES COOKING TIME 2 HOURS SERVES 8 – 10 LEVEL MEDIUM
INGREDIENTS • 4 kg pumpkin • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 medium onions, peeled, finely chopped • 1 cinnamon stick • freshly grated nutmeg • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1.7 litres vegetable stock

METHOD
• Cut the top off the pumpkin. Scoop out the seeds and fibres from the middle and discard • Using a sharp knife and a
spoon, carefully hollow out the pumpkin, removing the flesh and setting aside. Roughly chop the scoopedout pumpkin flesh • In a large saucepot over low heat, heat the olive oil and add the onions. Cook the onions gently for 10-15 minutes, until they are softened and golden-brown • Add the pumpkin flesh, the cinnamon and nutmeg, and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Increase the heat to medium and cover with the lid. Cook for 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the base from burning, until the pumpkin is cooked through • Add the stock and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Transfer the soup to a food processor in batches and blend until smooth • Return the soup to the pan and bring to a low simmer and cook for a further half an hour • Ladle into bowls and serve warm or at room temperature

INGREDIENTS • 170 grams plain flour •1 teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • 225 grams unsalted butter, room temperature • 200 grams light brown sugar • ½ teaspoon rosewater • 2 eggs • 130 grams walnuts, roughly chopped
METHOD
• Preheat oven to 180 C • Grease and line a 20 x 20 cm baking tin • In a bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt • In a mixing
bowl, beat the butter, rosewater, and light brown sugar until light and fluffy • Beat in the eggs, one at a time • Gently fold the flour mixture into the wet ingredients • Mix in the walnuts • Pour the batter into the baking tin • Bake for 30 minutes or until the surface has hardened. Note that a cocktail stick inserted in the center will not come out clean as the brownies are meant to be chewy. Remove from oven and leave to cool • To serve, cut into small rectangles to serve • To store, place in an airtight container for up to 3 days
