t all comes down to this, two final scores that put pen and paper together to update the BMX history books. Let us take you through the lead up and what to expect at the race where the unexpected happens, this is the 2022 Grands PROgram.

Through the 2022 season, each of the three pro classes have been wheel to wheel in battles as a generational shift begins to show it’s head. As new faces began to frequent the podiums through the series, the top dogs of the previous seasons in Men, Women, and Vet classes have remained consistant to be in the title hunt.

Would you bet on young and hungry or experienced and calm? Lets meet the contendors to help your grand stands convos.

For the first time in many years, the Men Pro title is mathmatically possible for six racers. With Josh Mclean leading the points for the second half of the season, fellow Australian Izaac Kennedy and Olympic Gold Medalist Niek Kimmann have been the main two threats to Mclean’s “Points Leader” monicker. With six wins to Mclean’s name in 2022, the following five racers have kept the chase close, each with three wins, apart from current No. Two, Izaac Kennedy. What makes Kennedy special? Consistancy. Locking in four second places and two thirdplaces, with their added rider points has been Izaacs bread and butter.

While Mclean has the wins and Kennedy has the podiums who has

the experience? None other than the Olympians, Neik Kimmann, Joris Daudet, and Corben Sharrah. On the biggest stage in sports, Kimmann kept his composure to take home the Gold in Tokyo then followed it up in Papendal just weeks later. However, Daudet has that Tulsa Ticket which lead him to join the four timers club and have a chance to break records with number five. He’s won World Champs, he’s won the National Champs, and in 2022 Corben Sharrah looks to return to the Grands stage to hoist the Silver Cup. After winning the 2009 Amateur title, Sharrah has made himself a staple in the pro ranks but all he needs is two winning laps to lock in his place in the pro history books. Every title winner needs a good holeshot, and the Holeshot King, Cam Wood, is coming into Tulsa HOT. After picking up the final two wins of the season in Bakersfield, Wood is looking dialed in for small hill racing. With the new Andy Contes gate in his backyard at Chandler BMX, Cam is coming into Grands as the small hill favorite.

The Dutch flag has made its mark

on the 2022 USA BMX season with Laura Smulders dominating the big hill stops of the season. With a full eight wins headed into Tulsa, Smulders will have to prove herself as she takes on the first small hill race of her pro career. Sitting in first by only 23 points, the ROC will be pivitol in the Women Pro title chase as both Alise Willoughby and Felicia Stancil know what it takes to win in Tulsa. Willoughby holding the Women’s Pro title nine times before, has made it known to the class she wants double digits. Charging into the series in Nashville, Willoughby went on an eight win streak, landing her just behind Smulders at the end of the season. With a small hill and tight first straight battles, The Beast is ready for title 10. The competition won’t be easy though,, with 2021 Champ, Felicia Stancil, hungry to end her season on top. In an inspiring hospital to World Champ season, Stancil has yet to make the climb to the top of the USA BMX podium in 2022. Will Tulsa be the place to do it for Stancil? She clutched in France why not in Tulsa too?

Where’s the Mosquito? 2021 Vet Pro Champ, Jonathan Suarez, has been MIA from the series while the Alabama Slamma is running the show with big wins and big style in Vet Pro. We don’t see many catching #95, however, Big Jeff Upshaw may have something else to say come main event time with his tech bike skill and big man speed.

A step away from the “normal” Grand Nationals build, Track Builder Billy Allen drew up plans to flip the track and challenge riders in Tulsa! With a first straight running along the jumbotron side of the SageNet Center, three shorter straight-aways would lay the ground work for a long split fourth straight. Featuring an outside pro section and inside rhythm section the race day endurance will be tested into the later rounds as one hang up into the final tight fourth turn could end title hopes.

The Factory Division, the pinnacle teams throughout the world of BMX battle at each stop of the National Series to determine who’s the best group of riders, and team managers, on the tour. For years the team sheets standings have seen Factory Fulltilt/Radio on top but former bike shop team and 2021’s Bike Shop Team of the Year, Factory BABS looks to make a run at the title in their first year in the division. With Factory LSG, Alpha Factory, and Factory Ssquared hot on the heels, the title will be up to the Team Managers and who has their team sheet dialed in.

the places that keep racers rolling and the teams that bring heated team sheet action to the national series. Hundreds of racers across 41 different teams battle all year to be crowned with the Bike Shop title, but only one can hold the cup. This year the BMX Sharks have dominated through the season racking up close to a 300 point lead on the defending champs J&R Bicycles/SpeedCo/Avian but the red and white kits aren’t giving up without a fight. Skewed BMX Bikes is a female-focused BMX company that was started to bring more awareness to women in the sport and provide female-centric race wear and bikes. Unlike men, women often have long legs and short torsos. This leads to awkward rider positioning which further complicates our ability to get over our handlebars, jump, manual, and many other things. Skewed BMX worked with an industry expert, Steve (BREW Dude) Garn, to build a race frame that changes the center of gravity and body position of women on the track. Made from a very lightweight double-butted steel, they weigh between 3 lbs and 4.2 lbs., which is lighter than some popular aluminum and carbon frames on the market. NORTHWEST

Lincoln Park BMX in Port Angeles, WA is one of those hidden gems in BMX. It is the most northernly, westwardly BMX track in the USA - and right across the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Victoria, BC. Smack dab in between is the dotted line that separates the United States from Canada. But that’s beside the point.

Everybody at Lincoln Park BMX, especially TO Sean Coleman, who along with his dedicated volunteer staff, has made this facility so incredible. To get to the starting gates, you go up the hill and cross a bridge. Underneath that bridge is the exit after you cross the finish line. But that’s beside the point.

Being so far northwestardly, USA BMX

wasn’t sure how large the Gold Cup Finals would be - but were pleasantly surprised to roll out nearly 130 motos with over 680 riders. But that’s beside the point.

The NW Finals brought out plenty of good comp - including Full Tilt Radio’s Lincoln Park local Wyatt “WyFi” Christensen. The Ponk rockers were out in full force, as was Dan Bushnell’s Bike Masters squad. But that’s beside the point.

What IS the point, is the fact that hundreds of Northwest. BMX fanatics got their shot at the fame and glory that goes with earning the coveted yellow background plate. Gold Cup No.1 Champs were presented the award, number one plate and a sweet USA BMX / DK Gold Cup jacket. And that is what it’s all about.

SOUTH CENTRAL

It was finally time, the South Central region had been battling at qualifiers all year long, but for this DK Gold Cup weekend, the battles were Texas sized and Under the Big Top at Desoto BMX.

First timers, series regulars, and race fans from across the region packed into Desoto BMX to see the action going down and racers delivered with some awesome laps. In 10 & Under Girls Cruiser the 10 rider class ready to bang bars with Harper Vescuso and Payton Johnson battling it out for the top spot on the podium. While some racers traveled in from out of state for the weekend, others simply brought their local battles to the DK Gold Cup like 15-16x girl’s Grecia Cristodulo and Shelby Elder.

It wasn’t just the young guns battling it out, the 36-40x class was out for gold as well. Spider-Man Sean Maclaskey, Justin Dodson, Michael Gresham, and James Phillip went wheel to wheel down the first straight and showed their veteran maneuvers as they fought to the line to finish the weekend with Maclaskey, Dodson, and Gresham going 1-2-3 in Sunday’s mains.

NORTH CENTRAL

The indoor speed ran rampant through the North Central DK Gold Cup Finals, with Minnesota’s Rum River BMX hosting the golden weekend for the region. Track changes to the facility gave locals a slight upper hand in fighting for the podium spots, but once the main event battles came, it was anyone’s race through Isanti, MN.

With a lot of power coming down the front straight away, 46-50 intermediate saw a shot out of the middle leading Brent Visser to the top of Saturday’s win. And then again, just two classes later, we witnessed the “Lightning Bug” Selena White, who must have been taking notes on how to lay down a fast lap through Rum River BMX.

Indoor, good food, and fast racing action. What else could you ask for from a DK Gold Cup Finals weekend? Oh, right. The Gold Cup titles. Standing proud on the podium with plates in hand and jackets waiting to the side in champs lane. For East Bethel, MN’s Sheila Kauppi, the laps were fast, and the weekend was Gold as she powered her way to both bikes district champ status.

When we return to Rum River BMX, something is added to improve the events. But after so many years in Isanti, we were curious what the volunteer crew had in the works for the next weekend.

High Springs BMX is home to BMX superstars Mackenzie “Skittles” Gayheart and Profile’s Profile’s team member and High Spring’s track operator extraordinaire, John Pringle. All that hard work paid off with the facility being awarded the first ever Gold Cup Championship Finals ever hosted in the Sunshine State. Despite the threat of Hurricane Ian which was looming to the southwest out in the Gulf of Mexico, racers showed up from 14 states to do battle for the gold. With 449 riders, Florida showed up and showed out as they always do anytime that there’s a big race in the state.

With near perfect weather, the racing was intense as you’ll see in the following photos. Congratulations to everyone that met their goals and left the event with jackets and new rankings. We’re sure that the golden plates earned will be flowing throughout the Southeast and beyond. Until next time…

SOUTHWEST

It was finally RACE DAY at the ranch and the Vegas vibes joined us for a race weekend that compelimented the desert sun. With the Southwest region itching for the Gold Cup action, Whitney Mesa BMX was the perfect place to satisfy that itch.

With one of the region’s best first straights, racers were taking their speed to new levels into turn one. Defending DK Gold Cup Champ, Cj Cariaso took his big 20” and 24” speed to the 15 Cruiser class to battle with Factory LRC’s Ryder Gondini. With the speed and flow of the track, some style was beginning to rise and it came from a bright yellow jacket racer, Camel Joe (chain wallet and all).

Once Sunday’s mains rolled into staging the racers of the Southwest could see the podium in their sights. Battles like the 9x class with GQ Novak and The Patriot Walkingto, or the turn one blast of Shatty Shatswell and Easy-e Raymond in 13x were in close running for the #RaceoftheDay. But that crown went to 16x where Joaquin Estrada and Dominic Pedotto fended off the rest of the field as they had a battle of their own. That race started with a Estrada holeshot but ended with a Pedotto win and top spot on the DK Gold Cup podium.

It has been four years since the big red truck rolled into the parking lot here, and it was for the 2018 Stars and Stripes Nationals the last time. Trilogy Park BMX is an incredibly smooth, tight and technical track that everyone in the area loves.

Friday’s pre-race kicked off the weekend and it was nice out with some great racing. Saturday morning we woke up to the sound of rain on the roof, after a quick check of the weather you could see rain coming for some of the morning but it was supposed to clear by noon. Sunday was forecast with nonstop rain, this led to rumors of a two in one day event. Shortly after practice started the call was made to run both races on Saturday to try and get in the event in as dry as possible conditions, this happens from time to time.

The rain didn’t stop the racing though, I doubt it stopped many from racing either. You prepare all year for this weekend by trying to get the best scores and you cannot let some bad weather get in your way of the golden jackets or number plates. With the rain not ending any time soon, the call was made to run a single moto transfer for the second race, which is usually a good call. If you are racing in heavy rain, you might as well get it over as quick as possible.

They say time flies when you’re having fun! The return of the BMX Canada National Series was eagerly awaited by many, after a two year delay. And it seemed like nobody skipped a beat. Title chases have all been so close within the classes leading up to Grands, it almost always boiled down to rider points.

As Grands grew closer, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that the restrictions for international travelers would be lifted, and yep, that meant an army of our US friends from down south were more than excited to come up to the Great White North, and

race BMX who were previously unable to earlier in the year. Of course, our Canadian friends from Alberta and Ontario brought out their best riders to compete for National plates.

Unfortunately there were no Women Pro’s that ran enough races to qualify for a National plate. Molly Simpson and Teigan Pascual have had a busy year traveling and racing the World Cup events, save for one race in Victoria for the Vancouver Island Nationals.

On the men’s side of the Pro action, it was

no surprise that Alex Tougas, having won all but one of his main events, took the title. Monster Bike Supply’s Mani Kawaguchi gave him a run all season long but Tougas’ racing experience and track speed just couldn’t be beat. Even his younger brother Ryan, who has been keeping his older brother in check in numerous main events, was a close second on Saturday’s race.

Taking it to the amateur’s side, for men’s cruiser, a threepeat is in order for Pure Bicycle’s Darcy Glencross from Nanaimo. While he was sitting in fourth place,

almost 100 points behind the lead going into Grands weekend, Darcy has raced consistently all year long, and with a slightly bigger rider count than runner up Nat#2 winner racing for Factory Motofill’s Cameron Elliott, was able to squeeze out the win for his third National #1 title in a row.

Onto the women’s cruisers, Factory Motofill’s Makayla Brosius out of Victoria and Marlise Rensby have had almost equal podium finishes throughout the season, with exception of a main event in the Sea to Sky nationals where they raced each

other. These ladies have been putting in the work throughout the season and their results have shown. Rensby’s third corner move on Saturday’s main event was a clear example of going for it, and making it stick where it counts.

BMX racing is no joke and with the excitement, thrill, adrenaline pumping and the thirst for victory, it can often come with some unfortunate injuries. It’s the price of admission for going fast on bikes. There were a few spills that required the attention of our wonderful track official medical team, and without them, these races wouldn’t

run as smoothly as they do. I would like to send a special shout out to them, and the downed riders that would have rather walked or ridden off their crashes: Andrew Gregg out of Victoria, Angie (Hot Mess Express) Lust from Spokane, Derek Theroux and Rollie Teodosio (ODD racing), both out of Abbotsford and each earning their bikers injuries, a broken collarbone. These guys and gals are BMX tough, and we’ll see them out on the track again in no time. Speedy recovery to you all!

Alex Tougas takes pull position in his favorite past time, racing in the barn.

The title chases for the 20” National #1 championships were jam packed with speed and nail biting excitement. As I mentioned earlier, rider points are a big bonus when it comes to clinching titles. For the ladies, there were a couple great battles that I followed. Remix’s Logan Lee out of Cochrane, AB, and Alpha Factory’s Allie McLean have been duking it out all season long, exchanging wins, as these two are a couple young ladies that love to race. While the Remix rider did in fact take both top spots over the weekend, she didn’t quite have enough riders in her class to clinch the title, just short by under 30 points.

Rift/Tangent Canada’s Ryan Barfoot and Factory Motofill’s Tiffany Brosius were the leading contenders for the National #1 title. Even though Barfoot has swept her series, winning all her main events, and Tiffany winning all but two main events, the Factory Motofill rider had the bigger groups most of the season, especially the quadruple point Grands Sunday where it mattered most. She went on and sealed the deal with her win in 13 Girls expert. The first time in BMX Canada history for siblings to take home National #1 titles. I know Tara and Mark, their loving supportive parents who have been on the scene for as long as I remember, were just beaming with excitement on the ferry ride home, and rightfully so! Congrats to the whole Brosius family for an exceptional year!

The amateur National #1 title was all Alpha going in to the Grand’s weekend, occupying the top four spots leading into the finals. Lucas Zhou, Kameron Drombolis, Cid Martinez and Levi Leavy lead the charge with less than 100 points within each other. Whilst Kameron Drombolis battled teammate Nikolai throughout the season, Lucas Zhou was the most consistent with the most riders, winning all but two main events throughout the year. He has been on a tear this season, not surprising as he’s been on

Having known Lucas for quite some time, watching his speed, skill and talent progress, I knew it was only a matter of time until he took home the National #1 Championship. Congrats Lucas!

And finally for the Title Team chase, it was no surprise that Factory Motofill having two National #1 Champs, and Alpha Factory almost dominating the big class expert main events, that these two would be in contention for the Team wins. Having looked at the results of the weekends race, Alpha Factory Team would be the ones on top with

almost 200 points above second place Motofill. Be on the lookout for these two teams to duke it out again! STANCIL’S 2022 SEASON

Chapter 1

While it was a short chapter, it was filled with post-National No.1 Title celebrations. Following a Women Pro-war for the title, Felicia Stancil packed up her belongings and set sail for an exciting new adventure under the Florida sun. Taking December off to move and enjoy some well-deserved time with Daisy, Stancil’s two-year-old dog, Stancil went right back to training before the kickoff of the 2022 season. Moving to Oldsmar, Florida, just a week before the series opener at Okeeheelee BMX, Stancil was ready to rock the No.1 plate in her new home state.

Chapter 2

That Okeeheelee BMX race day seemed like it was business as usual for Stancil. Leading laps throughout the day, no one knew what the main event had in store for the Factory Ssquared racer. Stancil explained, “Very first race of the year, leading the first main event, dislocated my

hip, and it was the most painful day of my life...It took them five and a half hours to put my hip back in, and it’s one of the most painful injuries of my life.”

Dislocating her hip after landing at the bottom of turn one, Stancil had to let her body heal but also heal mentally as well.

“During that time, I was out for three and a half months, and it was more mentally hard than anything. I had a twenty percent chance I would need a full hip replacement so just that weight every single day, am I doing too much? Am I not doing enough? It was just a mental battle for the entire three and a half months.”

With physical therapy three days a week during her recovery, Stancil could fill that “give it your all” itch; however, putting the power down on the bike still needed some time. That time finally came in early April, with only three months until the World Championship. From there, it was “savage mode,” as Stancil put it.

“I kept my head down for the entire three months. I didn’t do anything socially for three months apart from training sessions. I was so locked in.”

With that end goal of the three months being her first Elite World Title, Stancil was ready to get it done after being an Elite for eight years. “Growing up, I won every single world title, 9-18 years old. I didn’t even lose a moto during that entire time, so the world championship was always just part of me. But I never won an Elite one and this is my eighth-year Elite... I did everything I possibly could to come back from the hip injury and be as prepared as possible.”

Stancil was definitely prepared. Making her way into the main event, her previous experience at the World Championships and a laserfocused mentality would land her into the winner’s circle as the 2022 World Champion.

“All that matters is the final, and I went to the world cups, so I knew what I needed to do to pin one off at the time I needed to based on how I am... I was in such a robot mode. I’ve never been that focused. Last year at Grands, I was super, super focused like that, but the focus it took, I’ve never been that locked.”

That focus and preparation paid off. Stancil got out quickly and held on all the way to the line to earn the rainbow stripes and her first World Title as an Elite.

Chapter 3

The dust of the Worlds track teardown had yet to settle before Stancil began her new chapter as the World Champ and everything that comes with it.

ONE
YEAR, 3 CHAPTERS
USABMX.COM H VOL. 12 / ISS. 10 46

“There are interviews and media things, but the white jersey definitely is special, and I think people recognize that and see me with the white jersey. They know it’s special. But I think if you’re so focused on the process, you block out all the rest of the stuff. You know it all comes with it, just like with life, there are things that come with it, like drug testing and things like that, but you’ve just got to keep you’re mind on the process.”

She did it once this year, and Felicia Stancil is ready to get locked into savage mode again for her Grands prep. With the hip injury right at the begining of the season and so much focus on the Worlds, Felicia has had to battle her way back to the title chase with the few Nationals she had left. While she doesn’t have the scores she did going into last year, Stancil is still confident and excited about the show.

“I think it’s going to be a good show. Me, Laura, Alise? Laura won the overall World Cup, I’m the World Champion, and Alise is leading the USA BMX points. Those are the three titles of the year, and those three girls are going to be BATTLING that night. It’s going to be such a good show.”

With a four-week training block before the show in Tulsa, Stancil is ready to put her head down with her training partners to get back some of that consistency on race days.

With an up-and-down year, Stancil is looking to cap it off on a high and give BMX fans worldwide a good show with the rest of her class. Win or lose at the Grand Nationals. No doubt, Felicia Stancil has bounced back from one of her career’s most painful and mentally challenging injuries. However, with grit and determination, this is a season she should be proud of.

he Frenchman, the World Champ, Papa Joris, and this year, the four-time National No.1 USA BMX Men Pro. The callouts for Joris Daudet may have changed throughout the years, but his performances continue to impress the BMX world. At a spry 31 years old, Joris has a chance to do what no Men Pro has done before, win an unprecedented fifth USA BMX Men Pro Title. With four silver cups sitting proudly in his collection, Joris has proven again and again... and again he knows how to get the job done throughout the USA BMX season. Still, with a move back to France to prepare for the World Championship, we were curious to see where he would stack up in the points at the end of the year. In proper Joris fashion, he is sitting fourth and well in range of the title chase.

Moving back to France with his wife Teagan and son Jett, Joris was set to prepare for two different events. The first being to welcome the newest member of the Daudet family, baby Tali. And the second being his home country’s World Championships in Nantes, France, just a month later. While preparing for the Worlds, Daudet was hitting as many French and European races as possible when he wasn’t traveling back to the US for the USA BMX Pro Series. Daudet trained with bar-to-bar racing to prepare him for Nantes from the French National Championships to the European Championships. What no race prepares for is injury. Caught in a social media buzzing Elite Men main event

crash at the European Championships, Daudet powered on through the French National Champs and World Championships. Updating his fans with a social media post after Worlds saying this, “Ended up with a broken shoulder after my crash in the European Championship but quitting wasn’t an option for me, and I did everything I could to be healed and ready as much as I could.”

In true champion fashion, Joris powered through the pain and discomfort, putting down consistent laps that would allow him to battle for a bronze with a stunning final lap.

With his family by his side, Daudet continues his training and preparations back in the US. Returning to Sarasota BMX for the Florida training days, number five is the looming whispers

around those who have done the math on the title chase. If anyone can get the fantastic feat done, it would be the 33 bike. Experience battling with a stacked field during his years, especially during this season, is Daudet’s most significant advantage heading into the season finalé. That, and all the race craft/ speed to succeed through a young and hungry Men Pro field. That experience was displayed at last year’s night show down to his gate pick. Starting with gate three, Daudet looked to the long game to lock in gate one for the third and final go-around. Going one, two, one on the night, the Frenchman fought off his fellow BMX dad, Corben Sharrah, and a couple of those hungry young guns, Larsen and Wood, down the first straight and to the line.

DAUDET’S’ STILL GOT IT

The Frogtown Classic BMX Days event is the brainchild of early NorCal BMX racer and industry heavy, turned filmmaker, Todd Huffman. As a rider who got his start in the early days of the NBA and later the UBR racing organizations, Huffman got the big idea in 2020 to revisit the sacred grounds of an early UBR

track, in Angel’s Camp, California. UBR Founder, John Valdez, jumped in and got Jon and Cathy Anderson from Spreckels Park BMX in Manteca, CA, to run the races and the four were off to create the first event of its kind. The original 1970’s style downhill track was reconstructed on the exact spot, complete with off-

camber turns, loose berms and single jumps scattered along the way.

The USA BMX STACYC World Championship Series came to the HQ in Tulsa, OK, to crown champions under the Hardesty National BMX Stadium. With young racers and their families traveling from across town and the country, the plan of action was simple, throttle down and use the skills they have gained throughout the series

to leave Tulsa with the seven foot trophy and a Championship plate to their resumé. As the STACYC rippers locked down the race lines, the fun times also began to emerge. The family atmosphere bred in competition bathed the arena with positive energy. All of the #STACYCWorlds partici-

pants left wanting more. However, only a trip to their local track or waiting for the 2023 season would be their option to scratch the Stacyc BMX itch. We think the former is an excellent option for these kids to #RideSooner.

Each year Richmond BMX celebrates the end of its season with a double-point race event called the LUCK CUP, and here’s why. Art Luck is the event’s namesake and the heart and soul of Richmond BMX. “Luck,” to all that know him, is a longtime volunteer who spends several days each week taking practice laps at the track and mentoring new riders of all ages. He began racing in 1995 with his son and soon became Richmond’s TO from the 1999 to 2013 seasons. This year Luck celebrated his 74th birthday racing at the VA State Finals at NOVA BMX, where he placed second in the 61 & Over Cruiser class.

In June of 2021, another Richmond rider and local news videographer, Chris Heipel, brought Luck’s story to his co-worker and anchor at the local CBS news station WTVR, Greg McQuade. Together they created a news feature about our beloved Art Luck that, in June of 2022, would go on to win a regional Emmy Award in

the “Sports - News Feature” category at the 64th Annual Capital Emmy Awards ceremony held in Bethesda, Maryland. This comes after also being awarded a coveted Regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award in the “Sports Reporting” category—one of the highest achievements a news station can win.

To quote Luck, “‘If you want to live longer. You got to be active. Sitting on the couch doesn’t help none.” The full award-winning feature can be found at https://www.wtvr.com/i-havea-story/art-luck more about the Luck Cup and Duel of the Decades-Old School Open, held on the same date, can be found at richmondbmx.com

ow is it good to be back at Oldsmar BMX for the Gator Nationals after missing a couple of years worth of racing, there due to the track being closed. I am sure everyone was shocked when the news came about the track being closed due to structural issues. It is great to know that the city was all in with their commitment to running the facility when they went through the challenges of repairing the big hills. It is also great to know that

so many racers were excited to see the Gator Nationals back by having a showing of about 220 Moto’s each day for the two-day national. A week before we were set to race hurricane Ian came through and devastated areas of Florida. Luckily Oldsmar was mostly untouched.

The Gator Nationals was the final Big Hill race for the 2022 USA BMX Pro Series, this brought in some heavy hitters from all over the world. Laura Smulders Dominated the Women’s Pro weekend picking up two first place finishes. In Friday’s main

Alise Willoughby crashed hard entering the first turn sending her to last place, but she was still able to still pick up a secondplace finish on Saturday. Felicia Stancil went home with second and third place finishes, and Molly Simpson got third and fourth.

Men’s Pro racing was stacked with 42 riders turning out both days. Friday Izaac Kennedy had a strong showing leading lap after lap, and ended his day on the top podium spot. Kamren Larsen and Niek Kimmann finished second and third. On Saturday Joris Daudet took home the win, Izaac Kennedy sec-

ond and Corben Sharrah third. In Vet Pro, Olympian Twan Van Gendt had a strong showing grabbing second place on Friday, but Barry Nobles was able to fend him off and take the win, Jeff Upshaw came home with the third. Saturday Nobles won again, with Upshaw finishing second and Emilio Falla in third.

SuperX Women had three ladies dominating the weekend starting with Manuela Munoz Velez win on Friday and coming in second on Saturday. Bella May took second both days and Teya Rufus came in third Friday and won on Saturday.

PULL Magazine 67

SuperX Men had 63 riders battling on Saturday and 38 on Sunday for the final eight spots. Jack Greenough was able to take the top spot on Saturday with Jordan Callum coming in second and Jason Noordan in third. Sunday Jason Noordam won, Jack Greenough finished second and Joel Marsh third.

Now if you have been keeping track there were a ton of international riders taking home podiums in all the pro classes, well it didn’t stop there. It is very normal to see riders from all over the world compete in the pro classes, but on the amateur side there are usually only a few each weekend. This weekend you saw them dominating classes starting at 6 and under mixed open. A large amount of the international riders were thrown into the Novice class since this could have been their first race weekend with USA BMX and have unknown proficiency.

Madison Thompson won both days in 10 and Under Cruiser, as did Kaylie Cerasa in 11-12 Girls Cruiser. In 13-14 Girls Cruiser things started heating up and Samantha Williamson won on Saturday and Taylor Rungaitis won on Sunday. Keira Amaris won both days in 15-16 Girls Cruiser. In 17-20 Women Cruiser Madilyn Matiko had an incredible first turn swoop allowing her to win on Saturday, while on Sunday Lola Petillo held her ground and won. From 7 and Under Cruiser all the way to 9 Cruiser the winners flip flopped from Day One to Two between first and second place. Jacob Cowell, Ryder Johnson and Brandon Coyour won on Days One and Linkin Day, John Kerr and Cody Young won on Day Two. Nate Caserta won in 10 Cruiser on Day One and in a last straight battle, Andres Andrade pulled off a last second win at the line. Eleven Cruiser rider Mason Abbott had a great first straight and won on Day One while the next day he was stuck in the back and Jaxon Kopetskie won. From 12 Cruiser to 14 Cruiser the same rider won both days, Sean Lehew, Rowdy Holzer and Clay Sheffield all took the top spot. On Day One in 15 Cruiser Jayden Mitchell

had a great first turn swoop and pushed leader Alex Robinson up and out of the way, however, on Day Two Robinson couldn’t be touched and won. In 16 Cruiser Deegan Brown won both days and in 17 Cruiser Aaron Blee won both days.

The Girls Club action heated up quickly this weekend in 1-5 Girls Expert, on Saturday Luciana Brown won, but on Day Two she crashed with Assalyn Hardy allowing Rylee Johnson an easy ride to victory. The action continued into 6 Expert Girls where Reese Snover swooped Maria Bolivar Munevar in turn two and won on Friday, however, on Saturday it was all Maria Bolivar Munevar, out front by herself all the way to the finish. From 8 Expert Girls all the way to 12 Expert Girls the same riders won both days. Starting at eight Maci Fry, Gabriella Dyer, Sequoia Gomolicke, Eliza Newton and Kaylie Cerasa all finished

first. Thirteen Girls Expert Katy Cyrus took the early lead and won on Day One and Zoe Dannenberg did the same on Day Two. Sadie Herrera was untouchable on Saturday in 14 Girls Expert, however, on Sunday she crashed with a couple of other riders allowing Maria Usuga Garro to win. Manuela Munoz Velez was also untouchable on Saturday and won, but on Sunday she was not the first to turn one and slid out, allowing Teya Rufus and Sierra Samhammer to get out front and finish in that order.

Just like the 5 and Under Girls, the 5 and Under Expert Boys had a great battle for first. Day One Chase Reynolds won and Day Two Caleb Banda won overall. In 6 Expert Weston Hicks won on Saturday and Spencer Sullivan won on Sunday. From 7 Expert all the way to 10 Expert the same riders won both days, starting at Seven Jacob Colwell, John Kerr and Wyatt Williams all won. 11 Expert rider Benson Danielo took the lead on the second straight and went on to win on Saturday, but on Sunday he crashed in the last turn with Henry Leners and Mason Monegro won. Tyler Wagoner won in 12 Expert both days as did Rowdy Holzer in 13 Expert. Thomas Palmezano won on Day One in 14 Expert and Gaige Gomolicke won on Day Two. Thomas Maturano won both days in 15 Expert. Andrew Rassi had an incredible first straight and easily won Saturday’s 16 Expert main event, but on Sunday Ronnie Kim took the early lead, Rassi was in a very close second but could not catch Kim. Drew Polk took the early lead in the Saturday 17-20 Expert main by going low in turn one and kept it until the finish, on Sunday Polk got swooped in turn two by Jordan Callum and Callum held that lead over the finish line.

Growing up as a BMX kid, starting at four and a half years old, Liam dove headfirst into the sport we all love. Being brought to the track without any clue what racing was, Liam progressed quickly to the expert ranks, followed by his younger brother Madden who did the same. The Atherton BMX Family was born at the legendary Derby City BMX, and they were there to help in any way they could. Will Atherton, Liam’s dad, quickly offered his time to the track and has sat on the board of Derby City BMX for the past six years. As they began to travel around the Midwest and Southern regions of BMX, Liam and little brother Madden grew their love for bikes, landing their place on the Bluegrass BMX team and becoming two of the top riders in the area.

For any parent to see their child not be able to do what they love is heartbreaking, and that is exactly what happened to Liam after getting a crick in the neck after a family vacation, “This went on for about a month, and it kinda stopped him from riding his bike. I have a buddy who’s a physical therapist, and he took a look at him, and then we got into a CT, got into MRI scans and all that stuff. Then they found a tumor on his C5.” Will explained, “It was pretty scary times, they didn’t know what it was, but thankfully it was not cancer.”

The new USA BMX HQ in Tulsa hosted their first ever Vintage Nationals & Bike Show recently, racing around a classic “Indy World Champs-like” course, with a rubberband start, small hill, a flat concrete and asphalt course, scattered with old school wooden ramps. In all, there were 10 classes - with many riders signing up for multiple bike divisions.

Mingling among the crowd were special guests - Hall of Famers Mike Dominguez and Harry Leary, both Diamondback legends. Scattered amongst the parking lot were tons of BMX icons and even some

sweet classic BMX Vans - including Oklahoma’s very own House of Wheels van, which is currently being restored by Kenneth O’Brien. Parked on the inside of turn two, the van doors were wide open with an impressive assortment of eighttracks being cranked from the roofmounted bullhorn speakers.

THE BIG SHOW:

Along with the racing action, there were over 180 vintage bikes on display for the Vintage Bike Showwith quite a few tents set up for the vintage BMX swap and sale.

Thanks to Oklahoma’s M.O.T.O.S crew, judging commenced and with over 180 bikes to look over, it was a tough task to narrow down the 10 winners, (Even longer to tally up the scores!). But in the end, the following collectors were announced:

Pflugerville, TX, the 66,884 population town just outside of Austin, has been home to texas legends in the world of BMX, and for three days, the BMX

greats in training returned to the “everything’s bigger” state for a big race weekend.

Capitol City BMX had been itching for a National ever since

the Gold Cup Final a few years ago, and we can see why. The open space facility has gained a beautiful upgrade courtesy of track operator and Men Pro

Tanner Sebesta, as well as dirt master Lee Lewis. With the fivemeter hill painted green to honor the original Capitol City BMX, the Texas Nationals racers were charging into the track, ready to lay down the power throughout the weekend. However, the newest addition to the track, the last straight dogleg, changed that power into skill while

challenging each class. The tight rhythm section dogleg showed race fans who had the race leg endurance to get to the finish line fast as on/off lines and outside/ inside maneuvers started to develop.

The moves were being made, and the battles developed early with Maci Fry and Kira Vescuso in 8x Girls. The tight racing came to

a bar-to-bar conclusion as they hit the last straight dogleg where Maci Fry used her outside speed to stretch across the finish line in front. While Fry was the victor on Saturday, Vescuso wanted a Texas Nationals win for herself, locking in the Sunday win going wire-to-wire and setting up a big battle to go down at the Greatest Race on Earth.

Getting that big wheel speed locked in with Bryce “The Beast“ Cauley. Post-race congratulations with Madison Thompson and Olivia Alvidrez .

All the ladies were battling hard to the finish line, but back in the big wheels of 31-35 Cruiser, one racer found his perfect viewing spot behind turn two. Brian Carrillo was off to a fast lead when craziness struck. Hitting his marks through the second straight, Carrillo’s body weight shifted and locked on top of his front wheel, sending him up and

over turn two, landing him in the grass viewing area with the fans. Definitely not how he imagined that lap going, but sometimes racing takes us to new heights and gives us moments you have to see to believe.

Fence-clearing chaos and late-season battles charged on through the weekend bringing big wins to NAG and National

contenders. With 13x girl Addison Thompson lighting up the class, the local ripper, Carson Nuhn and the “Terminator“ Nate Loy locking down the 14x and 16x wins, and Kira Boustead gaining two big scores in 1720x Women, the points battles only got more intense as the final regular series weekend was drawing closer. wins were magnified in the 1720x class as a stacked class showed up in Pflugerville. 110% Nutrition boys Brody Cole and Weston Meurlot cranked into the top steps of the Saturday podium with Albe’s PJ O’Brien close behind on the three. Looking to switch things up on Sunday, O’Brien had his eyes on the holeshot; however, the first

turn had different plans. Sliding out in the lead, O’Brien collected the class high in the turn while the shark attack was down low, ready to bite. Aaron Blee was that shark, and he had an ocean of open water around him past the first turn to lock in his big win of the season.

Everything’s Bigger in Texas, and the

racing fun was no different. West, Central, and East racers joined together at the Capitol to battle, and at the end of the weekend, they left the beautiful facility itching to return for more Capitol City BMX fun.

The time has finally come. The final stop before the big show. Ten months and 27 National events have led us to this final showdown of last-ditch point grabs and all-out battles with both pro and amateur racers alike. Who would come out of Bakersfield victorious? The BMX world would soon find out.

The regular season finale each year brings a wave of emotion to the series.

If you were to put episode 179 of Seinfeld, a tying game 6 of the World Series, Season 8 Episode 5 of Game of Thrones, and the stunner left jab before the KO right hook into an event; you would have the Fall Nationals at Metro BMX.

First up on the moto board

the pro battles that locked new racers into the title chase. The return to Metro also brought the return of the small hill for the Men and Women Pros, although the action was anything but small. With Olympians and World Champions loading into the gate, speed and skill combo came early for all, as the pedal manual up the first straight camel was a speed boost if performed cleanly

and a speed breaker if bonked. For Mongoose’s Cam Wood, that speed boost was shown in each of his three main events growing his lead with each catch of the pedals down the first straight. In a heated battle on both Friday and Saturday with current National No.1 Men Pro, Joris Daudet, and SpeedCo/Avian’s Izaac Kennedy, Wood showed his small hill speed to the class

as they race into Tulsa and the title hunt. Wood has definitely shown the BMX world his potential, and another looks to do the same in Women Pro. Alise the Beast was going fast and making moves in Bakersfield. With the 11 bike out front, there was a 44 bike rocking the Canadian flag, looking to join the fun out front. Friday’s main event saw a huge lead early for Willoughby, leaving the Women Pro field to battle four wide into turn one. Fending off the Aussie Lauren Reynolds in third, Molly Simpson locked in the second step on the podium and followed it up Saturday with her first USA BMX Pro Series win. Molly Simpson ran hot from there on out, putting the Daylight Cycles ride on top of the podium again for UCI Sunday.

The Men and Women returned to the small hill while the Vets continued their action-packed battles. With Barry Nobles staying home in Alabama, the class wasn’t void of the Chase Bicycle presence, with Tyler Brown making his Chase Bicycles debut with a Halloweenthemed Saturday podium. With the spooky vibes decorating Metro BMX, it was only fitting for the “Pumpkinhead“, Jake Peebles, to come out as a big winner on the weekend. Diving low to avoid an Upshaw/Falla elbow battle up and over turn one, Peebles came out with his first win in the Vet Pro Class and followed it up

with a Saturday second behind Jeff Upshaw. From over turn one on Friday to laying down a hot lap win on Saturday, Upshaw might be the only man to contest Nobles in Tulsa. We don’t know the outcome, but we’re willing to bet the Vet Pros are ready to put on a show come Friday Night.

One of the best aspects of the Pro Series is the stacked field of amateurs that follow the pro racing with battle after battle. Battles like the 15-16 Girls Cruiser class with Danica

Anderson and Makinzie Palmer, where Anderson showed her track speed through the second straight rhythm to pull away for the win. Just a few classes later, in 41-45 Women Cruiser, the battles were just as heavy, with Erin Artzner powering to a doubled-up weekend. The barn burners were lighting up the Bakersfield sky as 12x Girls battled bar to bar on Friday night. Those bars were owned by the always-fast Landon Burian and Lily Ashley. With Burian taking

the top spot early, Ashley had her swoop planned out and executed it to a T in turn two. Joining the battles, 14x Girls charged down the first straightaway, with Derin Merten, Sophia Rodriguez, and Taylor Rungaitis all battling through turn one. With Haro Merten taking the Friday top spot and Sophast Rodriguez

The Women Pro class‘s Payton Ridenour, Molly Simpson, and Carly Kane took to the skies over the third straight double.
USABMX.COM H VOL. 12 / ISS. 10 90

Mongoose‘s Cam Wood showed Nick Adams and the rest of the Men Pro field the fast lines through Metro BMX

powering to the front of the stacked 14x Girls mains, the stage is set for Sunday in Tulsa.

Another class gearing up for a heated year-end finale is the powerful group of 17-20x. With a new hot shot, Cutter Williams, rising through the ranks after his win on Friday night at the Fall Nationals, the NAG point leaders of Drew Polk and Jordan Callum are still at their battles while leading the points. Only time will tell who locks down that big Grands win, but everyone will be looking over their shoulder to avoid the Grindle call out of “HE GOT POLKED.”

Dear Gabi,

WHAT THE HECK! Where did the time go?????

I would like to personally thank everyone for another crazy fun filled year! 2022 did not disappoint…Faith David and Ryan McGrath, thank you both so much for your continued support, I would be lost without you both!

Here are a few things you will need to keep in mind for the year to end smoothly!

• You must have a current membership on December 15 in order to be eligible for year-end awards.

• Check your district points now to be sure we have you in the correct class!

• If you are NOT listed in district points now, email us now so we can fix this before year end points are final – membership@ usabmx.com

• Year-end rankings are posted on the website around the 3rd week of January

• In order to receive the PULL magazine, you MUST be the first family member (the $60 membership)

• The most efficient way to renew your membership is to do it ONLINE!!

• If you have any questions or concerns regarding your membership or your points on the website, please contact the membership department directly either via phone or email – membership@ usabmx.com OR points@usabmx.com.
